Were You Delighted Or Did You Gasp And Call For the Fashion Police?

Posted by Michelle Moquin on November 10th, 2008

Good Monday Morning.

So there has been chitchat that my ears have been perking up to…all in regards to Michelle Obama’s Election Day dress.  My first impression was, ‘Oh so mod, and bold, and so not like ‘The First Lady’! I was delighted to see someone in her position take a chance and go for the unusual. But then I am always wanting to see the more interesting in the fashion world.  But don’t get me wrong, there is a fine line between ‘interesting’ and just plain ‘weird’.  To me,  this was not the latter. I was cheering her on and to me the entire Obama family made a bold statement: ‘We are a family who are in this together.’

First Ladies usually wear American designers…you know a pc thing. But more on the safe side: Oscar de la Renta, Carolina Herrera to name a few.  And Michelle Obama has followed suit by going ‘American’, however, Narciso Rodriquez, the American designer of this fashion statement, is not necessarily on the top of the ‘First Ladies’ designer list, which to me is a statement in itself.  Rodriguez is a designer who is not necessarily classic but one who can be a bit more edgy, perhaps because he is influenced by his hot cuban roots.  Michelle’s choice of him shows us that she is not only intelligent but that she has a mind of her own when it comes to fashion and making a statement that is truly her own.  I look forward to seeing more.

However, I have been hearing that the speckled pattern was ‘distracting’ and it was ‘lava lamp’ looking. Ha! I think that’s funny. Did you feel that way? Hmm…to me it was artsy and visually striking…a woman who is not sure of herself would not be able to pull off this combination.

I will say one thing though, I did think that the cardigan was a bit of an afterthought that could’ve been left at home. I was dying to see just the dress alone….and alone I think it might have looked a bit more sophisticated and bold. But that’s me – I like to go for the major ‘wow’ factor. However, Michelle is a public figure now and a very important one. The sensible cardi may have been a smart move on her part…it showed us that there is a sensible side to her too, which I think people want to see.  She is thinking.

Just my two on the psychology of dress. :) The bottom line is, I think we have a well rounded woman as the ‘first lady’, and I think she looked great.

Readers: What do you think? Give me your two – blog me.

*******

Doug: I commented on your blog already but thanks for including it here – I thought it was a fun comparison.

Anonz: I  understand your position, and I will respectfully butt out of your life. You have no need not to trust me – As you ask, so it shall be. You have my word.

Yesterday, I contacted Madaline, and I gave her the new order:  ’The moment Anonz steps foot onto Darfur soil remove his protection.’ She has already confirmed the order.

Again, I wish you  peace and safety, and a shit load of luck – go kick some ass.

Zen Lill: Oh I have been there…maybe not with 30 women giving me ‘the looks’ – that is funny…but I’m sure they’ve all been there at some point in their lives.

I’m outta here…

Gratefully your blog host,

Hi Mischa, the dress…liked the daring aspect, did not dig the shrug at all. Must say I normally do not care for the family matchy matchy look but in this instance I saw the unity of it, and there is no BS about the love, admiration and devotion these two share, I’m inspired by it. I can’t wait to read more about her, she strikes me as a complex and interesting sort, I tend to like people like that : )

Anonz, I’m sure you’ll be in touch when you can but after Kathleen brought up the ‘you could die’ thing, it got me thinking…if you die while avenging Nia’s death (but, please please remember: dying is NOT an option), what would I do to avenge your death? You know I could never just turn away, shrug and say ‘oh well…he’s gone’ and just let it rest at that. so, um, any suggestions? I only have one idea…not sure it would fulfill my need to avenge you being taken away from me, but it certainly would honor the kind of man you are. I think I might want/need to punish a specific someone before it’d be possible to let it rest. Or maybe this feeling will pass…anyway, please honor Kathleen’s request and keep us all posted. Do you see how many people (and especially women) care about you? Your attention makes me feel that I must be doing something right in this lifetime. You are precious, my sweet pea, so watch your back.

    Luv, Zen Lilly
