Goodbye Nora Ephron
Posted by Michelle Moquin on June 27th, 2012
Thank you for making me laugh about LOVE and for inspiring the HOPE of LOVE
Good morning!
I don’t know about you, but “When Harry Met Sally” was a fave movie of mine. of course we all remember the famous “restaurant scene”. It was a good movie to cuddle up to and one that inspired lots of emotions. And yes, I did enjoy “Sleepless…” – You’ve Got mail” was more of the same same. Certainly movies that moved the heart. I don’t believe I am a HOPEless romantic, (well…maybe just a little :) but yes, I do love the art of romance and feelings of deep passionate love. Does anyone not?
“Julie and Julia” was another one that inspired laughs in a fun and unique way. Although Ephron’s works of art will certainly be watched over and over again in the coming years, we will certainly miss her and all of her writes that had yet to be birthed.
Thank you Nora Ephron for your movies that made me smile and laugh about love, and gave me HOPE that there is a man out there…one whom if I fall deeply in love with…will perhaps yes, potentially fall deeply in love with me as well.
May you rest in peace.
Writer and director Nora Ephron dies at 71: Film icon behind When Harry Met Sally and Sleepless in Seattle loses her battle with leukemia
Nora Ephron, the writer of iconic movies When Harry Met Sally, Sleepless in Seattle and You’ve Got Mail, has died at the age of 71.
The author and screenwriter had fought a six-year battle with leukemia and finally succumbed to the disease. Ephron’s son Jacob Bernstein confirmed her death in Manhattan yesterday.
She earned three Oscar nominations for her screenwriting and her work was among the most quotable and influential of her generation.
Scroll down for highlights from Nora’s films:
Great wit: Writer and director Nora Ephron, pictured in 2010, passed away yeserday at the age of 71
Timeless: One of Ephron’s greatest creations’ When Harry Met Sally, starring Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal, set the precedent for a new style of romantic comediesHer book publisher Alfred A Knopf also confirmed her death in a statement as fellow writers and the acting community reacted with shock.
‘I am very sad to learn of Nora’s passing,’ When Harry Met Sally star Billy Crystal said in a statement. ‘She was a brilliant writer and humorist. Being her Harry to Meg’s Sally will always have a special place in my heart. I was very lucky to get to say her words.’
Tom Hanks, who starred in Sleepless in Seattle and You’ve Got Mail, also paid tribute, saying: ‘Nora Ephron was a journalist/artist who knew what was important to know; how things really worked, what was worthwhile, who was fascinating and why.
With Tom Hanks: Ephron wrote Sleepless in Seattle and also directed the 1998 film
Best director: Ephron won a 2011 Director’s Guild of America award for directing actress Meryl Streep in Julie & Julia. She also wrote the screenplay‘At a dinner table and on a film set she lifted us all with wisdom and wit mixed with love for us and love for life. Rita and I are so very sad to lose our friend who brought so much joy to all who were lucky enough to know her.’
Bewitched star Nicole Kidman said: ‘She was so smart, warm and funny. I am so grateful that she was my friend and we had the opportunity to work together.
Meryl Streep, who starred in two Ephron classics, Heartburn and 2009′s Julie & Julia, wrote to the New York Times: ‘Nora just looked at every situation and cocked her head and thought, ‘Hmmmm, how can I make this more fun?’ . . . You could call on her for anything: doctors, restaurants, recipes, speeches, or just a few jokes, and we all did it, constantly. She was an expert in all the departments of living well.’
Tear-jerker: Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks in the wildly popular Sleepless in Seattle, directed and written by Ephron
Another hit: Ephron also wrote and directed You’ve Got Mail – again starring Hanks and RyanEarlier today newspaper columnist Liz Smith broke the story in a wowOwow article that eulogized the scriptwriter, saying her family including her husband of 20 years, the writer Nicholas Pileggi, had already planned her funeral.
NORA EPHRON’S FINEST LINES
Harry Burns: You know, you may be the first attractive woman I’ve not wanted to sleep with in my entire life.
Sally Albright: That’s wonderful, Harry.
When Harry Met Sally
All I’m saying is that somewhere out there is the man you are supposed to marry. And if you don’t get him first, somebody else will, and you’ll have to spend the rest of your life knowing that somebody else is married to your husband.
Marie, When Harry Met Sally
I’ll have what she’s having - Older woman to waiter after Sally fakes an orgasm at a deli
I came here tonight because when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible.
Harry
I have to murder and dismember a crustacean.
Julia Powell, Julia & Julia
Annie, when you’re attracted to someone, it just means that your subconscious is attracted to their subconscious, subconsciously. So what we think of as fate is just two neuroses knowing that they are a perfect match.
Dennis Reed, Sleepless in Seattle
Well, it was a million tiny little things that, when you added them all up, they meant we were supposed to be together… and I knew it. I knew it the very first time I touched her. It was like coming home.
Sam Baldwin, Sleepless In Seattle
‘I won’t say, “Rest in peace, Nora” – I will ask, “What the hell will we do without you?”‘ Smith wrote. The column, which was written as if Ephron had already died, was later removed from the site.
Ephron was born on May 19, 1941 in New York City. At the age of four, she moved to Beverly Hills with her screenwriting parents Henry and Phoebe and three younger sisters.
Determined by high school to be a journalist, Ephron graduated from the single sex Wellesley College in 1962, moved to New York and started out as a fact checker at Newsweek.
She moved to the New York Post andremained there five years. Ephron soon began writing for Esquire and The New York Times and developed a national following with her articles.
She covered political conventions, the feminist movement and Wellesley, which she labeled a factory for ‘docile’ women.
She married in 1976 to Carl Bernstein, who teamed with reporter Bob Woodward on prize-winning coverage of the Watergate scandal that brought down President Nixon.
The couple had two children. Ephron was pregnant with her second child when she learned Bernstein was having an affair with a mutual friend Margaret Jay, who was married to the British ambassador to the U.S.
The marriage crumbled but it inspired Ephron’s book Heartburn which was so close to her life that Bernstein threatened to sue.
It was later adapted for screen and starred Jack Nicholson and Meryl Streep. The Oscar-winning actress teamed up with Ephron again in 2009 to star in Julia & Julia.
Ephron’s talent for bringing to life flawed but deeply likeable and funny women made her beloved by movie audiences – and industry gold.
One of her greatest successes was When Harry Met Sally, the 1989 romantic comedy starring Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan, about two friends who fall in love despite their own misgivings that the ‘sex part always gets in the way’.
Lasting love: Nicholas Pileggi and Nora Ephron, at the Oscars in 2010, had been married for 20 years
Broken heart: Nora wrote Heartburn after husband No. 2, Watergate journalist Carl Bernstein – seen together in 1978 – had an affair with a mutual friendThe film struck a chord with audiences for its quirky dialogue, sharp wit and more rounded portrayal of female leads.
TRIBUTES TO NORA
Billy Crystal: ‘I am very sad to learn of Nora’s passing. She was a brilliant writer and humorist. Being her Harry to Meg’s Sally will always have a special place in my heart. I was very lucky to get to say her words.’
Tom Hanks: ‘Nora Ephron was a journalist/artist who knew what was important to know; how things really worked, what was worthwhile, who was fascinating and why . . . At a dinner table and on a film set she lifted us all with wisdom and wit mixed with love for us and love for life. Rita and I are so very sad to lose our friend who brought so much joy to all who were lucky enough to know her.’
Nicole Kidman: ‘She was so smart, warm and funny. I am so grateful that she was my friend and we had the opportunity to work together. My thoughts and love are with her family at this time. I will never forget the dinners, games and laughter we all share.’
Meryl Streep: ‘Nora just looked at every situation and cocked her head and thought, ‘Hmmmm, how can I make this more fun?’ . . . You could call on her for anything: doctors, restaurants, recipes, speeches, or just a few jokes, and we all did it, constantly. She was an expert in all the departments of living well.’
Kirstie Alley: ‘”You can settle for reality, or you can go off, like a fool, and dream another dream.” ? Nora Ephron. Oh Jeez… you will be missed..RIP XO’
Kerry Washington: ‘My heart aches. Nora Ephron. What a tremendous loss. RIP.’
Shonda Rhimes, writer and director of Grey’s Anatomy, quoted Ephron herself, posting: ”’I try to write parts for women that are as complicated and interesting as women actually are.” – Nora Ephron.’
As a rare woman to write, direct and produce Hollywood movies, Meg Ryan was among the many actresses who said they loved working with Ephron because she understood them so much better than male peers.
Following When Harry Met Sally, she wrote and directed the equally successful Sleepless in Seattle, pairing Meg Ryan with Tom Hanks followed by You’ve Got Mail, also starring Ryan and Hanks.
When Harry Met Sally earned an Academy Award nomination for its screenplay in 1990 and then four years later, Ephron was nominated again for Sleepless in Seattle.
Ephron was married three times: to Dan Greenberg, Bernstein and, quite happily, to Nicholas Pileggi whose books inspired Martin Scorcese’s films Goodfellas and Casino.
She is survived by her husband, two sons Max and Jacob, along with sisters Delia, Amy and Hallie Ephron, all of whom are writers.
In her essay, The O Word, Nora Ephron anticipated growing too old to make jokes about her age.
She would be ‘really old’, beyond sex in a hotel room, or even a frozen custard at Shake Shack.
It would be nice if she believed in a higher being, but the phrase ‘everything happens for a reason’ is a sermon that only annoyed her.
Ephron wrote of summers in the Hamptons when her children were little, of fireworks on the Fourth of July and picnics on the beach.
She loved the sound of geese in mid-July – ‘one of the things that made the summers out there so magical’. As she aged, the geese reminded her that summer will end, and so will everything else.
‘I especially began to hate their sound, which was not beating wings – how could I have ever thought it was? – but a lot of uneuphonious honks,’ she wrote.
‘Now we don’t go to Long Island in the summer and I don’t hear the geese. Sometimes, instead, we go to Los Angeles, where there are hummingbirds, and I love to watch them because they’re so busy getting the most out of life.’

Zen Lill, you speak a great understanding of the difference between the cult that forces us women to follow the dictates of men and the Western religious precepts that seek to control the actions of women.
We face death for any resistance to our oppressors, Western women face at most ostracism. There is just no conparison.
Thank you Zen Lill for your concern.

The republicans have put their ex Attorney General, Alberto Gonzales out there to help make their attempt to fine Obama’s Attorney General, Eric Holden in contempt of Congress.
I fume as I sit through the interviews with that creep. The elephant in the room is that Gonzales was willing to grant bush dictatorship powers to keep his job. Yet no one mentions his rulings.

What to Say If Your Child Is Gay: Your First Reaction Is Crucial
“Coming out” to a parent is a pivotal moment in the lives of many homosexuals, so the parent’s first response will not be soon forgotten. Trouble is, a less-than-ideal initial reaction could cause lasting damage to the parent-child relationship.
A poor reaction from a parent even could make a young person who already feels socially isolated because of sexual orientation believe that he/she is completely alone, increasing the odds of depression or suicide.
My younger daughter came out to me the summer between her sophomore and junior years of college. Since then, I have talked with hundreds of parents and young people about what to do if your child tells you he is gay or if you suspect that’s the case…
THE COMING-OUT CONVERSATION
Whatever your initial feelings when your child says that he is gay, your best response is one of love and acceptance.
Example: “You’re our child. We love you no matter what.”
Acceptance is what your child needs from you right now, and as a parent, your primary responsibility is to give your child what he needs.
It can help to add, “Thanks for telling me/us.” Your child has taken an obviously difficult step that allows you to know him better. Your acknowledgment of this increases the odds that the child will keep you in the loop on future developments in his life.
One way to further emphasize your desire to be supportive is to suggest that you attend a meeting together of Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG).
PFLAG is a nonprofit organization with more than 350 chapters located in all 50 states (202-467-8180, http://www.PFlag.org).
Attending meetings could help you and your child answer any questions that you might have about homosexuality. And suggesting this sends a message of acceptance and family unity to your child.
Also, ask your child whether you should share the news with friends, and if so, how he wants the news shared. Just because your child came out to you does not necessarily mean that he is ready for everyone to know.
“ARE YOU SURE?”
Parents sometimes are taken completely by surprise when their children decide to come out.
Some reasons for this include…
This child’s general behavior or prior relationships might have led the parents to think that the child was heterosexual. While some homosexuals exhibit interests or mannerisms that lead their families to suspect that they might be gay, others do not.
It’s relatively common for those who later come out to first date and sometimes even wed members of the opposite sex, either because they are not yet fully aware of or willing to confront their true sexuality or because they wish to hide it from others.
Some relatively young children come out before their parents even realize they’re thinking about sex. Young people know more about sex and relationships and mature faster these days than they did in past generations, and some might come out at age 11 or 12 or even earlier. (Others come out as teens or college students, and still others not until well into adulthood.)
Surprised parents might be tempted to respond to their child’s coming out with words of doubt, such as, “Are you sure?”…“How do you know?”…“But you’ve always dated girls” (or boys, as the case may be).
Some parents even will say, “It must be just a phase.” However, if your child has reached the point of coming out to his/her parents, there probably is no doubt.
If you do blurt out words of doubt, as soon as possible explain that this was just shock talking—and immediately express your love and acceptance of your child.
IF YOU SUSPECT BUT HAVEN’T BEEN TOLD
While some parents are taken by surprise by the news that a child is gay, others have suspected as much for years. These parents might be tempted to broach the subject if only to assure the child that he will be loved regardless of his sexual orientation.
But it’s better to wait for the child to come to you with this information. Even if you are correct, the child might not yet be ready to face his sexual orientation, much less share it with others.
But there is something constructive you can do. Voice words of acceptance when homosexuality comes up, such as on TV or in the community. This will not necessarily cause your child to come out any sooner, but it could make coming to terms with homosexuality less stressful for the child and will strengthen your bond with him.
QUESTIONS PARENTS ASK
Among the questions and issues that often cross parents’ minds when their kids come out…
What will we tell Grandpa? (Or some other family member known for negative feelings about homosexuals.) Let your child decide when and whether to break the news to relatives who might not be accepting.
If such a person is informed and responds poorly, make it clear that the rest of the family accepts this child and will not appreciate disparaging comments.
One father decided to send a family photo Christmas card, which included his daughter and her partner and their children. In an accompanying letter, the father explained that his daughter and her partner had been together for six years, and he wrote, “I love my daughter, and I admire her and have been enriched by her life experiences.
I accept her without any reservation, and I want you to accept her and her family with the warmth that you have always extended to me. That’s my Christmas wish.”
What about AIDS?
Yes, AIDS still is an especially serious concern for male homosexuals—but it’s also a serious concern for straight people. Whatever your child’s sexual orientation, you should help him understand the threat of AIDS and how to stay safe.
Where did I go wrong?
Some parents feel guilt when they learn that their child is gay. They worry that being gay will make that child less happy in life, and they wonder whether their parenting style led to this sexual orientation.
It did not. Research strongly suggests that homosexuality might have a significant genetic component and, in any event, is strongly influenced by biochemical events prior to birth. So parenting has nothing to do with it.
I accept that you’re gay, but do you have to flaunt it? This is a statement of nonacceptance. Truly accepting a child’s homosexuality does not just mean accepting it in the abstract—it also means endeavoring to make this child feel like a fully accepted member of the family.
If your gay child does not feel permitted to bring a same-sex partner to family gatherings—and to kiss or hug this partner just as openly as heterosexual family members do with their partners—then the family has not truly accepted his homosexuality.
Can he change? In a word, no.
Being gay is not a choice your child is making that can be reversed, nor is it a medical problem that can be “cured.” Some religious groups do claim that it is possible to “cure” homosexuality, but there is no evidence to support this.
If you suggest to your gay child that his sexual orientation can be changed, all you do is send a powerful message of disapproval.

Has anyone heard about the supposed discovery of stowaways in a cargo container in New Jersey? This container went through Egypt and two other Middle Eastern countries.
When will the republicans in Congress allow legislation to tag every cargo container from its point of origin to its destination?
They are so concerned about saving the billionaires money that they are willing to risk the safety of all of us.

Aren’t you tired of hearing the question, ” How much pressure will republicans feel to do something if the health care bill is thrown out?”
We all know that the republicans couldn’t care less about whether the poor or middle class has health care if it means a cost to the rich.

I feel I have to say something about the “Health Info” post today. It is severely one sided. Before you go off and accept this as gospel, consider what your church and God says about homosexuality.
Why do think the Church holds that this is a disordered condition? It is because it is.
Seek help for your Child, both physological and spiritual. Pray for your child and keep them in a good spiritual enviroment.
You don’t have to accept this illness as incurable as this post suggests. God will help if you as for His guidance and love.

This Fast and Furious instance is only less worst than the pundits and news anchors who pretend that a bit of racism isn’t involved. Of course this has never happened when a white boy was the US attorney general.
But as usual white america refuses to accept their racism and bigotry. The prevalent attitude is if we ignore what we are doing the OTW they will not notice. And if they insist, we will just accuse them of playing the race card.

Laura, it is narrow minded thinking like your own that leads to self loathing and suicides in normal Gay, Lesbian and Transgender youths.
God created us all in his image. This is not a choice, they were created this way just as you were !!! Acceptance and treating your neighbor as you would have him treat you are the words of Jesus…
It is not your place to judge, neither is it any Churches that are fraught with their own Demons

Are we going to let the republicans turn this country into a place for the rich at the top with 90% of the pie and the rest of us with noting but the bottom dregs?
Erica
June 27th, 2012 at 9:56 am
What leads to “self-loathing” among homosexuals is the realization that they are acting in a way that is contrary to human nature.
It is a very painful life style and a dangerous one. Encouraging this self-degradation is not helpful, rather you are contributing to the mental derangement which needs to be healed in those afflicted.
Enough of this P.C. garbage,YOU are destroying these poor misguided souls who are struggling with “demons” and losing the battle because society is abandoning them.
June 27th, 2012 at 9:58 am
Laura, the “Church” holds beliefs that go back to the STone Age. We are living in 2012 and homosexuality is a fact of modern life.
The Church would do its disciples well to fast forward to today and acknowledge that some of God’s most brilliant and accomplished children are and were gay and that they have just as much a right to their sexual orientation as straight people.
In reality, we shouldn’t even be having this discussion–we should be way beyond that and be dealing with REAL problems like genocide in Syria, mass rape in Africa and any number of other atrocities inflicted upon innocent people by (mostly) straight people.
June 27th, 2012 at 10:00 am
It’s not about what the church says about it. It’s about what God says about it.
God says the same thing about incest, it is not normal for a Dad to have sex with his son, or daughter, and be in a relationship with them the same goes for a brother and sister being in love with each other and so on. Society wants to justify what looks and feels good to them.
What’s wrong with a Christian or a Believer in God standing up for what they believe in? Show me where it is okay for a dad to be in love with his daughter in a sexual way or a man or a woman having sex with kids as young as 2 and 3 years of age, then I will believe that it is okay for man to have sex with a man and a woman to have sex with a woman.
June 27th, 2012 at 10:06 am
This post is unworthy of Health Info. This is a very polarizing subject and no “expert” is authorized to address it definitively.
Hence, bringing it up at all is an insult to those who may take a different view of the matter.
So much for “tolerance” and “diversity”. These words only apply when you are trying to shove unwanted social engineering on those who have traditional values.
For those who consider homosexuality to be a sinful and dangerous departure from normal and healthy human conduct, no sensitivity is required or desired. This perspective is verboten.
I am disappointed that, even here, we must be force-fed a diet of homosexual activism masquerading as “health news”.
And for your information, there is ALWAYS a choice when people engage in ANY conduct. “Gay” is not a state of being, it is a mode of behavior. That’s a basic fact.
June 27th, 2012 at 10:20 am
Coming out at 11-12 yrs old? Accept but don’t question? Take your children to church and live and teach morality!
Some may still live the gay lifestyle but, if they are taught at an early age that living this way is an abomination in the eyes of the LORD and our life on earth is short compared to eternity then you’ve done your job as parents.
TV shows glorify narcissistic, selfish and anything goes life styles. This is a very poor example on how to live your life. We may be all be in created in GOD’s image but, he certainly never condoned and explicitly forbids this life style.
Yes we are very narrow minded to the gay lifestyle just as I’m against abortion. We believe it’s wrong just like stealing or cheating on your spouse…wrong is wrong! JESUS love us all but, only the ones that love him back will spend eternity with HIM!
June 27th, 2012 at 10:24 am

How would you know? Are you gay? I am, and it IS my state of being, always has been and always will be. Do not pretend to make a statement of “basic fact” when it is only your “basic opinion”.

So the NRA is backing the first ever censorship of a US attorney general by the US Congress. Tell me again how this isn’t politically and racially inspired.
Oh, yeah white america it is just a COINCIDENCE that this US attorney General is being held for the firs time by a black man.

Republicans today have gone off the rails completely when it comes to women’s rights.
The fact that the Republican Party is actively fighting to take away a woman’s right to make her own health decisions, and is standing in the way of commonsense legislation like paycheck equality — when women still make 77 cents for every dollar a man makes — shows just how important it is that we do everything we can to keep Democrats in control come November.
I can’t stand by and watch Republicans try to undo decades worth of progress in a single legislative session, and send women back to the dark ages. I hope you won’t, either.
I know that President Obama and Democrats at every level across the country are committed, not just to preserving the policies we already have that help women, but to doing everything they can to continue to move us forward towards full equality.
Thanks,

I am tired of hearing this phrase “the american people will demand something.”
As long as the majority of the American people are white that will never happen. White america is content to be told what is good, bad or ugly in their society by “experts.”
Most of white america wouldn’t wipe their asses if some “expert” went on TV and told them it was not stylish.

Healthier Barbecuing
Q: I’ve heard that beef cooked on the grill may cause cancer. What about grilled fish and vegetables?
A: When muscle meats, including beef and chicken, are cooked at high temperatures to a burned or charred state, they can form various carcinogens.
Among these are a class of compounds called heterocyclic amines, which form on the surface of meat. You should cut away burned or charred pieces.
Even better:
Avoid some heterocyclic amines by wrapping meat in foil when grilling.
Cook thoroughly, but don’t burn it. Microwave hamburger and other meats for a few minutes, and pour off the juices before wrapping in foil and grilling to help reduce precursors of the carcinogens.
Fish can form these compounds, too. Charred or burned vegetables don’t produce heterocyclic amines but can contain other carcinogens when blackened.

Well, see if there are terrorists in it, if there is, just seal it back up and dump it overboard with them in it and forget about them.
That should be their punishment, right and just, they can sit and think about their life choices while their air runs out or it fills with water.
Perfect punishment for those that kill innocents in the name of a mythical fantasy book their particular cult believes in. too bad they don’t just take the Heaven’s Gate path for their cult.

Want a Second Dog? How to Make Sure the Two Pooches Get Along
If one dog is good, two must be better. To some dog lovers that seems like it should be true, but the reality is, bringing a second dog into a home can create problems. What to do…
YOUR CURRENT DOG
Two questions to answer about your current dog before adding a second dog—does my dog generally play well with other dogs?…does my dog react well when another dog enters the house?
If the answer to either question is no, think twice about bringing a second dog into your home. If your heart is set on a second dog, you may need to hire a professional trainer.
YOUR SECOND DOG
It’s best to select a second dog that will be no more than 35 pounds heavier or lighter than your current dog when both are fully grown. If the size differential is greater, the larger dog might chase down and harm the smaller dog—even if the dogs generally get along well.
Seeing a small animal dash by can trigger a larger dog’s natural hunting instinct, a phenomenon called “predatory drift.”
Age differences between the dogs is not necessarily a problem, although some older dogs are unhappy about sharing a home with an energetic younger dog that always wants to play.
It also can be a mistake to bring two puppies into the home at the same time. When dogs grow up together, they often bond very closely with each other, to the exclusion of close relationships with the humans.
BRINGING THE DOGS TOGETHER
The dogs’ first meeting should be outdoors in a fenced-in area that is not your own yard, and you should have help from another person. If the meeting is on your property, your first dog might aggressively defend its territory against the newcomer. Exercise both dogs separately prior to this meeting to burn off energy.
Position one dog (it doesn’t matter which one) on its leash at one side of this fenced-in area while the second dog enters from the other side, also on a leash. Slowly walk the dogs toward each other.
If both dogs appear happy, continue walking until you are about six feet apart, then drop both leashes (but don’t take the leashes off—you might need to grab them if a fight develops).
Call off the meeting immediately if either dog becomes aggressive (growling or snarling)…very tense (rigid body, fixed stare)…or very fearful (such as hiding behind your legs).
If the initial meeting fails, take the dogs on a long walk, where they walk the same route at the same time but with their leashes held by different handlers.
The handlers should be in the middle and the dogs on the outside. Repeat the introduction described above immediately after the walk. If the dogs still don’t get along, you might need to hire a dog trainer.
If the dogs get along, let them interact until their excitement dies down, then take them home. Keep them on leashes inside for a few minutes until you’re sure that the change of venue has not upset either dog.
For the first month, separate the dogs in different rooms or crates when you’re not home. Also take precautions to avoid fights at feeding time—a common conflict in two-dog homes. Place the dogs’ bowls in separate rooms or on opposite sides of the room while you remain in the middle.

Q: Is there a breathing technique that can ease asthma symptoms?
A: The Papworth method, created in the 1960s at Papworth Hospital in Cambridgeshire, England, can help anyone who starts breathing rapidly and shallowly because of anxiety.
It had not been studied in asthma patients until recently. It has now been shown to cut asthma symptoms by one-third, but it does not improve lung function or replace medications.
This form of physical therapy integrates breathing and relaxation exercises to discourage shallow breaths while focusing on slow nasal expiration using the abdomen and diaphragm.
It teaches patients to recognize stress and use breathing to physically manage that stress. Ask your doctor for a referral to a respiratory therapist who teaches the technique.

This goes to the point that I have been making about the increased presence of military personal. With them will come much more violent crimes.
======================
Guam – 2 Navy seamen, already in jail for 1 attempted armed robbery, have now been accused in 2 other armed or attempted armed robberies.
The 3 incidents are among 4 crimes which occurred between 8:30 pm Monday evening and 5:30 am Tuesday morning. [see details of the 4 incidents below].
The 2 seamen were initially arrested Tuesday evening for the attempted stickup of a casino patron on the Carnival grounds which happened about 5 am Tuesday morning. Yesterday [Wednesday], 21 year old Justine Miska and 22 year old Michael A.R. Mayers were both charged in Superior Court with attempted second degree robbery and conspiracy to commit second degree robbery.
They are being held on $25-thousand dollar cash bail each.
Now, acting Guam Police Spokesman Sgt. Mike Aguon says the pair have been arrested again for the armed robbery of the Hana Shiatsu Massage and the attempted armed robbery of the Best Massage, both in Tamuning.
Additional Arrest Charges:
Justine D. Miska:
-2nd Degree Robbery
-(Attempted) 2nd Degree Robbery
-Poss. and use of a weapon in a commission of a felony(2x)
-Conspiracy to commit Robbery(2x)
-Terrorizing(2x)
-Reckless Conduct
Michael A.R. Mayers:
-Criminal Facilitation (2x)
Sgt. Aguon says this second arrest of the same two men is the result of an ongoing investigation by GPD, NCIS and NCID agents.
In addition, investigators have accused the pair of responsibility for a burglary that occurred on Naval Base Guam.
The 2 sailors have NOT been linked to the first armed robbery of that night which occurred about 8:30 pm at the Victoria J Market in Mangilao. That case remains un-solved. Nor are they being accused of any of the other 8 armed robberies that have occurred over the past month.
Sgt. Aguon says that the “Robbery Task Force” will continue its investigations of the other 8 armed robberies and they are still asking for the public’s assistance.
If you have any information about these crimes you are urged to call:
Guam Crime Stoppers at: 477-HELP or call GPD’s Criminal Investigations Section at: 475-8532 or 475-8551.
TIME LINE of Monday Night-Tuesday Morning armed and attempted armed robberies:
1. ARMED ROBBERY-MONDAY June 25: 8:27 pm, 2 men entered the Victoria J Market in Mangilao, one was armed with a handgun. They demanded money and fled on foot. They are described as possibly local males in dark clothing.
2. ARMED ROBBERY-TUESDAY June 26: 12:30 am, Hana Massage in Tamuning reported that 2 men in dark long sleeve shirts with hoodies entered the establishment brandishing a black handgun and demanded money. After getting an undisclosed amount, they fled.
3. ATTEMPTED ARMED ROBBERY June 26: 1:20am 2 men, one armed with a hand gun attempted to rob the BEST MASSAGE in Tamuning. Both were wearing long sleeve jackets with hoodies. They tried to enter though the rear door and then tried the front door, but both were locked and the pair fled the scene.
4. ATTEMPTED ARMED ROBBERY June 26: 5:16 am Tuesday officers responded to the Carnival grounds by the Casino where a man reported that while he was inside the men’s restroom he was approached by 2 men, one brandishing a handgun, and they demanded money. The victim showed them his empty wallet and said he did not have any money. The suspects were also dressed up in hoodies. They fled in a vehicle in an unknown direction.

HAGATNA, Guam (AP) — A friary on Guam is pleading for the return of two missing sacred relics.
Pacific Daily News (http://bit.ly/QlZBlB ) reports a relic of the 2,000-year-old True Cross was taken with its ornate, gold-plated case from St. Fidelis Friary on Monday. Catholics believe it’s a piece of the cross Jesus was crucified on.
other missing relic is a 500-year-old bone fragment of St. Lawrence of Brindisi. It was also taken with a gold-plated reliquary.
Rev. Eric Forbes says that while the cases are gold-plated, they have little monetary value. He fears that they’ll be thrown away after realizing they’re not made of gold.
He urges they be returned to the friary — no questions asked.
The thefts were reported to police.

Will This Video
Get Obama Fired?
After Putting $803,436 in Obama’s Campaign Coffer, a Media Giant Attempted to Keep Americans From Seeing This Critical Presentation
See What They Tried to Ban
Dear Reader,
It pays to have friends in powerful places.
Especially if you are the president of the United States.
You see, recently we ramped up efforts to get the word out concerning a very dire and serious assessment of our nation’s economic future. So we put together an interview featuring New York Times best-selling author Robert Wiedemer.
In the video, Wiedemer provides disturbing evidence for 50% unemployment, a 90% stock market crash, and 100% annual inflation . . . starting in 2012.
Word of the video quickly spread to all corners of America, and over 30 million have had the chance to watch this powerful footage.
However, when a major Obama donor saw this presentation, the company attempted to ban it from their far-reaching media empire, and refused to show it unless it was revised.
Admittedly, Wiedemer is unapologetic about some of his “controversial” findings. And if his predictions come true, as they have in the past, Obama’s chances of winning the election will dwindle.
Bottom line: We think you deserve to see this video.
More importantly, we think you NEED to see it to stay safe during these tumultuous times.

Before she died the list of things Ephron refused to know anything about included:
“The former Soviet Republics, the Kardashians, Twitter, all Housewives, Survivors, American Idols, and Bachelors. Karzai’s brother, soccer, monkfish, Jay-Z, every drink invented since the Cosmopolitan, especially the drink made with crushed mint leaves. You know the one.”
My list is nearly identical, except for the drink. When done well, the mojito is tasty and refreshing.

Nawzad, your words if I may quote you sums it all up perfectly (so Thank YOU) ‘We face death for any resistance to our oppressors, Western women face at most ostracism. There is just no conparison.’ & a humble thank you to Farah, Bost, Herzat & Sheberghan.
Nora Ephron will missed, she had such a gift for writing and her humor is ‘dead on, balls accurate’ (I don’t think she wrote that ‘My Cousin Vinny’ line but my Italiano commadres and I often mimmick this line just for laughs : )
& Laura, you are the quintessential example of the indoctrination I was referring to in my comment yesterday, I don’t know you though I’m sure within five minutes I’d sense the lemming mentality and would need to disengage and move on to speak with someone else. Personally, I have found more acceptance of people just as they are from my atheist friends, understand that atheistic and free thinking individuals usually have a personal code of conduct that far surpasses ‘faith based’ indoctrination, why(?), because they had to come up with a value system on their own. Try it, you might like it…and you won’t feel that you need to reform anyone from how they are and you won’t feel the need to be so superior (as if straight peeps are somehow better than gay peeps, really – why? bc we breed?! Think about that one…)
Let’s face it, we all do some minor-major ‘judging’ and are somewhat ‘opinionated’ based on our own world view, though I’ve observed that ‘religious’ people often do it far more than us secular types and they stand behind their god to do it and throw in lines like ‘do not judge lest thou be judged’ uh-huh, how about ‘people who live in glass houses should not throw stones’ – very atheist and very ‘live and let live’ at the same time…
Luv, Zen Lill
PS women of MM blog, I have to share this: 3 years ago I spoke about my hot pink pants, well, I broke them back out for some summertime fun and 3x’s this week alone women have stopped to ask about them, so if you want pants that make you look fine, check out zappos.com type in XCVI (brand) and willow (pant name) and you’ll see the in a few colors, not the pink, I ordered the off white 2 weeks ago and love them, too. ZL, cute pants. Nice they are made in the USA!
Michelle, I thought you might like this follow up item I saw about Nora. (Bet those luncheons were great fun).
A Lunch gathering where Nora Ephron was to be honored yesterday turned into a tribute to the writer a day after her unexpected death. Ephron was to be one of 12 women feted at Casa Lever for AOL and PBS’ “Makers: Women Who Make America” documentary film series, along with Barbara Walters, Diane von Furstenberg, Gayle King and Katie Couric. But her passing shocked her closest friends.
“We’d known that Nora was ill, we didn’t know that she was dying,” said Walters, who revealed that she and Ephron were members of the Harpies — a close-knit cadre of lunching ladies who’ve met to eat and argue over 12 years at Michael’s, the Four Seasons and ‘21.’
Walters said of the gossipy group, “We would discuss face-lifts, other people’s. We just met with Nora, and she looked great.”
The Harpies’ ranks include Cynthia McFadden, power publicist Peggy Siegal, Condé Nast’s Maurie Perl and Beth Kseniak, former Hillary Clinton press secretary Lisa Caputo and Jennifer Isham. But, “Nora was definitely the spiritual and intellectual leader,” Siegal told us, adding the Harpies will continue “with a heavy heart and an empty seat.”
The Harpies’ meetings always began with a half-hour devoted to discussing Hillary. “They’d grill Lisa on what country she was in, how tired she was, her hair,” a source told us. Next came the day’s headlines, and then the floor was open for intense debate.
“God forbid you were wrong, or you were dismissed and reduced to rubble . . . with great affection,” the insider said.
A line of luminaries went to Ephron’s apartment last night to pay their respects to her husband, Nicholas Pileggi, her sisters and sons Jacob and Max Bernstein, including Martin Scorsese, Barry Diller, Mike Nichols, Calvin Trillin, Joan Didion, Tom Brokaw, Gay Talese, Ken Auletta, Charlie Rose, Irwin Winkler, Bryan Lourd and Binky Urban.
A memorial is planned for Ephron on July 9.

I liked the line, “God forbid you were wrong, or you were dismissed and reduced to rubble . . . with great affection.” Kinda of like here, most of the time. :)

Robert,RT I am so with you on this being tired of hearing what white people have to say about things that affect all of us americans.
The health care mandate was approved along party lines except that the “R” of STARK, Roberts flipped. Those are the facts.
Yet when we listen to the white anchors, and pundits, except Chris Matthews all we hear is dumb ass white spin.
This was the only health care plan this nation has ever had before it. Some intelligent analysis is necessary.
Andrea Mitchel jumped to proclaim that the MOST important man in Washington DC was now Roberts, even more important than Obama because he voted for the legality of the bill. I almost puked.
Only from the mouth of a white person could come such idiotic logic that would take the achievement of the first president to ever give this nation health care for all its people and make it about one vote on the Supreme Court.
But when you examine their past behavior it is obvious that most whites only see things through color. It took Melissa Harris-Perry to put it in its proper perspective. She said no other president has been able to give us here in America health care for all his people.
I am so tired of receiving my news sifted through the narcissistic ego of white America.
