Wonderful Women Of The World

Good morning!

Okay, so I’m going to be blogging about Eve Ensler again. I know…I know…I have already honored her as a Wonderful Woman of the World. But this girl deserves to be recognized again and again for her efforts and support of all women around the globe.

Ensler’s newest venture? “Emotional Creature” based on her book, “I am an Emotional Creature: The Secret Life Of Girls Around The World”. The focus is on what Ensler calls your “girl cell” – embracing your inner girl. She declares that there is a “girl cell” in all of us – yes men too – a cell that we have all been taught to suppress.

Here’s a TED talk Ensler did a few years ago talking passionately about the “girl cell”:

After successful workshops in Johannesburg and Paris (Ruth did you and the girls see?), Ensler’s world premier is right here in my backyard, at the Berkeley Rep. Aren’t we lucky!

Berkeley Rep is proud to present the world premiere of a powerful new play from Tony Award–winner Eve Ensler. Staged by Obie Award–winning director Jo Bonney and performed by a talented ensemble of young women, Emotional Creature is made up of a original monologues and irresistable songs about and for girls. Placing their stories squarely center stage, it gives full expression to their secret voices and innermost thoughts, highlighting the diversity and commonality of the issues they face.

The show started a few days ago and runs through July 15th. This is a show you do not want to miss. I certainly won’t.

And just in case you want to read more, here’s a write up from our local newspaper:

Eve Ensler fires up the ‘girl cell’ in ‘Creature’

Your “girl cell” may need some charging, andEve Ensler is here to help you.

The celebrated author, activist and performer is probably most famous for making the world a safer place for the word “vagina” through her phenomenally successful show “The Vagina Monologues.” Now she’s back with a new show, and it’s all about the girl cell in everyone – men and women.

“We are living in a world that is so bifurcated,” Ensler says. “We don’t trust the heart, we don’t trust the head. Ninety percent of the world is in great hardship, there’s too much violence to women, and it’s time to come to a new place. This new place requires that part of ourselves that is passionate and compassionate, intuitive and emotional. And revolutionary. That part of us is what I call the girl cell. It’s the capacity to be more than we think we are and the ability to connect to others beyond ourselves.”

The new show, “Emotional Creature,” has its world premiere at Berkeley Repertory Theatre and is inspired by Ensler’s best-selling 2010 book “I Am an Emotional Creature: The Secret Life of Girls Around the World.” This time around, Ensler is not the one onstage. Jo Bonney directs six young women delivering original monologues and performing music by Charl-Johan Lingenfelder and choreography by Luam.

The show arrives in the Bay Area after successful workshops in Johannesburg and Paris, and Ensler says the decision to include music and dance happened organically.

“We met Charl in South Africa, and he’s so brilliant and talented,” she says on the phone from Berkeley before heading into a rehearsal. “It just reflects the way girls communicate, to go from spoken word to conversation to song to dance. This is my first time writing songs, and it’s so much fun. To turn words into music is thrilling, and the melodies express emotion in a way that’s new for me. In my dreams I’ve always wanted to be a rock ‘n’ roll singer. This is the closest I will ever get.”

Ensler’s “Vagina Monologues” was a huge hit in San Francisco, running for months in 2001 and 2002 with various shorter reprises over the years. “I always knew the Bay Area was vagina friendly,” Ensler says with a laugh. She laughs a lot in conversation. On this day, perhaps her good mood is heightened because it’s her 59th birthday. Or it could be, as she puts it, her “gratitude for being alive.”

Her short haircut is the only visible evidence of her battle with cancer, which she says was gruesome, and physically and emotionally the most challenging thing she’s been through.

“It’s so true that when you face mortality, everything is more precious,” Ensler says. “It’s like the end of ‘Our Town.’ Let’s recognize life while we’re living it. We need to live our lives more consciously. Wow, look at that gorgeous fabric. Look at that beautiful sky. It’s all because you realize life is so perishable and how easily you could not be here. You move toward what matters because there’s not time for petty things. I hope everyone doesn’t have to go to the edge of death to open their hearts like this. I think art can take you there.”

A catalyst for change wherever she goes, Ensler says she keeps coming back to theater as a primary medium for her message because when it works, there’s nothing more powerful. Through “The Vagina Monologues” and V-Day events worldwide, Ensler estimates that she has helped raise more than $80 million to prevent violence against women since 1996.

“Theater is so present,” she says. “It’s a collaboration between audience and performers, happening right there, and that’s a provocative, dangerous thing. I saw this happen over and over with ‘Vagina Monologues.’ This alchemy happens in the theater, and the show enters people’s bodies, and it changes you. Something changes. You’re inspired and driven to be more than yourself, to be your real self. I don’t know anyplace that has the power of the theater.”

Ensler sees humanity heading in one of two directions at this moment: one where the human race evolves and flourishes, and one – this is the direction she sees us heading now – where we destroy the planet.

“I want girl energy to spread around the world,” Ensler says. “That girl cell must be powerful if we’re all told to ignore it, to suppress it, to change it. But if we tap into that part of ourselves, the more loving, the more resisting, the more compassionate, the more heart-opening part, we have the capacity to create compassionate revolution. We can be fierce and loving at the same time. We need to be.”

Emotional Creature: By Eve Ensler. Directed by Jo Bonney. In previews. Opens Friday. Through July 15. Berkeley Repertory Theatre’s Roda Theatre, 2015 Addison St., Berkeley. $14.50-$73 (subject to change). (510) 647-2949.www.berkeleyrep.org.

Readers: Here’s to trusting our hearts and our heads, and to being more passionate and compassionate and embracing that “girl cell” in all of us.

Hey ZL: Well, I didn’t expect the monitor to be violent toward the kids, as yes, she probably would get fired. But I am glad that she began to stick up for herself against those horrible kids. Have a great weekend!

That goes for all my readers too! Gay Pride is this weekend – Have fun and be safe for all of you participating in the festivities!

Those brats should get a life time ban from public school bus rides. Let their parents cart them around. I believe that would be fitting.

  2. Janis Says:

Artitude…these were not hormonal teens. That is not “normal” bullying. They talked about how if they stabbed her, “the knife would go through her like butter” because she is “so fat”.

They also made fun of her dead son for killing himself. If you think that is normal, you have a problem.

These are sick, imbalanced kids that were raised by equally sick parents. If you act like a jerk at work, you could lose your job, you act like a jerk at the bar, the bouncer throws you out. If you act like human garbage on the bus…well you get the point.

And if the parents are inconvenienced because they raise crappy kids, they should start paying more attention to them.

If my dog dumps on the street and I don’t clean it up, I get fined. That is their punishment for having their crappy kids on the bus.

  3. BT Says:

They should also be made to apologize to Karen Klein. In person, at an assembly, on national TV, whatever. That much at least is owed by those kids.

  4. Scott Says:

I am 46 years old and my mother would clean my clock if I ever disrespect someone’s grandparent. If those were my kids they would apologize to her face after I tear them a new one in front of her.

  5. EY Says:

I don’t have kids but if I did I drag their @$$ to the bullied person’s house and make them apologize to that whole family then another separate apology to the kid he/she bullied.

THEN I would have them do chores around THEIR house for a month so that way, they would learn. Parents need to teach their kids to respect everyone! Not certain people.

Little-Known Risk Factors for Cancer: Fruit Juice, Alarm Clocks, Heavy Traffic and More

What if you were told that your bedside alarm clock—or even your morning glass of orange juice—could possibly increase your risk for cancer?

That would sound pretty far-fetched, right? Believe it or not, scientists in many parts of the world are now making intriguing new discoveries about such surprising and little-known factors that may increase your likelihood of developing, or dying from, cancer.

    For example…

    FRUIT JUICE
Fruit is loaded with cancer-preventing antioxidants and fiber. But when you remove the fiber and drink the juice, which is high in sugar, you trigger greater spikes in blood sugar (glucose) and the glucose-regulating hormone insulin.

High levels of glucose and insulin, acting as a growth stimulant, can promote more rapid cellular growth and division, which may increase one’s risk of developing cancer or promote existing disease.

    Scientific evidence:
In a study of nearly 1,800 people, those who drank the most fruit juice (more than three glasses a day) were 74% more likely to develop colorectal cancer than those who drank the least, reported researchers in the October 2011 issue of the Journal of the American Dietetic Association.

    Cancer self-defense:
This study, which was based on responses to food-frequency questionnaires, is not definitive, but I believe that the evidence is strong enough to advise people to avoid fruit juice and eat the whole fruit instead.

If you don’t want to give up fruit juice, mix three ounces of pure fruit juice with three ounces of water. Drink no more than two to three servings of the diluted fruit juice mixture a day.

Also avoid other fast-digesting, glucose-spiking carbohydrates (such as sugar and white flour).

Emphasize foods that stabilize blood sugar and insulin, such as whole grains, legumes and vegetables. If you regularly eat pasta, cook it al dente (to minimize blood sugar increases). Choose whole-wheat pasta or brown rice pasta.

    LIGHT AT NIGHT
Fascinating research is now being conducted on possible cancer risks associated with a phenomenon known as “light at night” (LAN)—that is, any type of light exposure at night…even from a bedside alarm clock.

Research on the health effects of light exposure began more than two decades ago when scientists first identified an increased risk for breast, prostate, colorectal and other cancers in night-shift workers.

Researchers theorize that night-shift work disrupts the body’s natural circadian rhythm of daytime activity and nighttime rest, leading to imbalances in the hormones melatonin, estrogen and cortisol, which may play a role in triggering cancer. Now the research extends far beyond night-shift work.

    Scientific evidence:
Researchers at the University of Haifa in Israel measured light levels in the “sleeping habitats” of 1,679 women. They found that those with the highest “bedroom-light intensity” had a 22% higher risk for breast cancer.

A 2009 study discovered that risk for prostate cancer increased as the exposure to LAN increased.
    To help protect yourself…

Use an alarm clock with a red light. An alarm clock that’s too close to your head and illuminated with any color other than red generates light in the blue spectrum, which may be associated with disruption in sleep and cut the production of melatonin, the circadian-regulating-hormone.

In addition, if you need a light to help you find your way to the bathroom, use a dim nightlight. Avoid direct exposure to light.
Helpful: Use a sleep “mask” to cover your eyes when you’re sleeping.

    HEAVY TRAFFIC
It’s logical that breathing air pollution from traffic might increase the risk for lung cancer.

    Recent unexpected finding:
Research published in various peer-reviewed journals in the last year links air pollution from traffic to a higher risk for ovarian, cervical, brain and stomach cancers.

Researchers are still studying the association, but it may be due to volatile organic compounds (VOCs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and other toxic substances in car exhaust that cause cellular damage not just in the lungs but throughout the body.

To avoid exposure to pollution from automobiles…

When driving, maintain a reasonable distance from the car in front of you. Use the rule of thumb from safety experts—at least one car length for every 10 miles per hour (mph) of speed.

So if you’re driving 60 mph, there should be at least six car lengths between your car and the one in front of you. And in stop-and-go traffic or at a stoplight, leave one car length of space between your car and the one in front of you.

Turn on the air-recirculation system in your car—and leave it on when you are in heavier traffic. This helps ensure that no outdoor air is circulating in your car.

If you live near a busy road, close your home’s windows during peak traffic hours and place one or two air filters in appropriate locations in your home.

Avoid driving, bicycling or walking in or near rush-hour traffic whenever possible.

Wear a breathing mask, often used by motorists, joggers and cyclists to filter out noxious odors and fumes, if you can’t avoid areas with high levels of pollution from traffic.

Examples: Filt-R Reusable Neoprene Commuter Pollution Mask (about $30) and Respro Techno Face Mask (about $40)—both are available online.

Or, if you can’t wear a mask, breathe through your nose instead of your mouth. Breathing through the nose helps filter out particles that get trapped in the mucous membranes.

When breathing through your mouth, pollutants may directly enter the lungs.

Eat an antioxidant-rich diet with leafy greens, melons and dark-colored fruits such as plums and berries (for example, blueberries and blackberries)—these protect your body’s cells from harmful pollutants.

Check the Web site http://www.AirNow.gov for air quality in your area, and avoid going outside when the air-quality index is higher than the “moderate” range.

    VITAMIN E
Research investigating vitamin E’s effect on prostate cancer has been mixed. At one time, it was reported that vitamin E could reduce men’s risk for prostate cancer.

However, a recent study published in The Journal of the American Medical Association, which analyzed existing data, found that men who took vitamin E alone had a 17% increase in prostate cancer compared with men who took a placebo.

Men who took vitamin E and selenium (a supplement with cancer-suppressing properties) had no increased risk for prostate cancer.

    What’s now been discovered:
In the research linking vitamin E use to increased prostate cancer risk, men took a form of vitamin E called alpha-tocopherol, which has several drawbacks.

For example, it is synthetic (not natural), and it does not include the vitamin’s seven other compounds—three tocopherols (gamma, beta and delta) and four tocotrienols.

Many experts now think that gamma-tocopherol—not alpha-tocopherol, which was shown in research to increase prostate cancer risk—is the type of vitamin E with the greatest cancer-fighting activity.

Cancer self-defense: If you take vitamin E, look for a supplement that contains mixed tocopherols (including gamma-tocopherol) and tocotrienols.

All people, especially those with a history of cancer, should consult a doctor who is experienced in nutrition and the use of dietary supplements before starting a supplement regimen.

Also, be sure to make a varied antioxidant-rich diet part of your cancer-fighting defense.

Every white station is raving about how the people of that university town did their duty and convicted the creep of molesting those boys.

But the truth is they let him off on the one that was eye witnessed by Mike McQueary.
    ——————

    • Victim 2: A boy of about 10 that a graduate assistant, Mike McQueary, has said he saw being attacked by Sandusky in the team showers in February 2001. Investigators have not been able to determine the boy’s identity. McQueary reported what he saw to head coach Joe Paterno, and Paterno’s handling of it contributed to the university’s decision to fire him shortly after Sandusky was arrested in November.

Guilty of indecent assault, unlawful contact with minor, corruption of minors, endangering a child’s welfare.
Acquitted of involuntary deviate sexual intercourse.
    ——————————–
I’m anxious to discover what the race of the this victim was.

Regardless, it has let the university off on a negligent charge because of Mike Mcqueary’s telling them about it.

Another example of sick white justice.

    Martino

  8. Juarez Says:

This was a university verdict because the jury who are members of the university community let the school off because they aquicted him of the event which was witnessed

Law enforcement has been given the credit for doing their jobs, when it was the media that forced the law to prosecute this man.

    Sick white justice.

  9. Mary Says:

Nine of the 12 jurors have personal connections with the University. So you could expect that they would do whatever they could to relieve the school of direct liability.

Negating the testimony the employee of Penn State does just that.

How idiotic to find him guilty on witnesses who were not there to testify but find him innocent by the one witness that links the school officials to the crime of this evil man.

It was planned and concocted to protect the Penn State as much as they could.

I hear this kind of “white Speak” from my husband and most of our white relatives here in West Virginia.
    ——————-
Democrats outnumber Republicans by nearly two to one in West Virginia and Democratic politicians hold 70 percent of local elected offices there, but Obama is so unpopular that Romney is virtually guaranteed to win the state.
    ————————-
“but Obama is so unpopular …” The word “unpopular” here is white Speak for Unwhite, black, just not white.

I know it , you should know it. Most of the white men in this state would never vote for a black man. They would rather suffer under bad leadership by a white man rather than good or even arguably great leadership by a black man.

But don’t count this state out of Obama’s corner just yet. If most of us white women can get a clue, he will carry this state.

  14. Human Events Says:

Washington has apparently calmed down after the excitement of Thursday’s Supreme Court decisions. It seemed almost certain that we would finally find out the fate of Obamacare and the important immigration bill from Arizona — SB 1070. The calm will, however, dissipate quickly this weekend with the rulings likely to come down on Monday. Of course, Human Events will have the latest news from the Supreme Court next week, so stay tuned to http://www.HumanEvents.com for the most breaking developments.

One decision that was delivered by the Court yesterday was to Knox v. Service Employees International Union (SEIU). The ruling, which came down 7-2 against the SEIU, is a severe blow to not only labor unions, but also to the notoriously liberal Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. It’s an interesting case, and an exciting decision in the fight against union corruption. Hope Hodge has the details here.

It’s the beginning of summer, but the political season never seems to take a break, and one race, among the many, that will be important come November is the one for the Wisconsin Senate seat being left vacant by retiring Sen. Herb Kohl. The Republican primary for the nomination is showing many conservative contenders, and Wisconsin’s Gov. Scott Walker has already declared that he will not endorse any particular candidate. In Walker’s own words, he aims “to be a referee” in the Aug. 14 primary. John Gizzi has the latest polling results and primary news from Wisconsin in his overview today.

That’s all from me today. Have a great weekend, and stay cool!

Recognizing the Injustices of the Discriminatory Chinese Exclusion Laws

    Recognizing Past Injustices
To have moral authority around the world, we must speak out against prejudice at home. On Monday, the House passed a resolution to recognize and apologize for the Chinese Exclusion Act and other discriminatory laws passed between 1882 and 1904 that violated the civil rights of Chinese-American settlers. I was proud to co-sponsor H. Res. 683 since it confronts the truth of the Chinese Exclusion laws and reaffirms our commitment to preserving civil rights for all Americans. By passing the resolution, Congress has rightfully expressed regret for the far-reaching injustices of the discriminatory laws. Representing San Francisco, I know that diversity is a strength of our nation’s history. Though the legislation cannot erase the deeds of the past, it reiterates our commitment to equal rights for all Americans, regardless of race, now and in the future.

    Celebrating San Francisco Pride
San Francisco Pride is the largest gathering of LGBT people and allies in the nation – a tribute to our proud history of advocacy for equal rights and the LGBT community’s contributions to our city, our state, and our nation.

We have made great progress towards ending discrimination in our laws. Under President Obama’s leadership, Democrats passed a fully-inclusive hate crimes law and discarded the discriminatory “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy in the dustbin of history. With the leadership of President Obama, we have acted to protect vulnerable LGBT refugees, ensured foreign aid promotes LGBT rights, and enlisted international organizations in the fight against discrimination. The President made it his policy to no longer defend the shameful Defense of Marriage Act in court – and, a few weeks ago, for the first time, a Circuit Court of Appeals struck down this discriminatory law.

Despite these steps forward, we know that more must be done. As we work toward a tomorrow of respect and progress for LGBT Americans, we must keep fighting in Congress to end bullying in schools, inequality in marriage and in the workplace, and discrimination in our laws.

Congresswoman Pelosi meets with Brandon Torrance of Mission High School in San Francisco and other high school students, United Way representatives, and Team NFL to encourage volunteering in communities across the country.

Expanding Access to the American Dream
In the American tradition, undocumented young people who have pursued education and military service are eager to participate in our nation’s future; they seek to help build something better for the next generation. Like previous generations of immigrants who have come to our shores, these young people simply strive to take part in the American dream. Recently, President Obama announced a Department of Homeland Security directive protecting DREAM-eligible youth from deportation. The announcement offers a measure of relief for young people raised and educated here, but left in legal limbo through no fault of their own. This action will strengthen our economy and reflects the best values of our nation.

It was with great pride that the Democratic-led House passed the DREAM Act with a bipartisan vote in 2010, and it was great disappointment that we watched Republicans in the Senate obstruct the legislation from becoming law. We will continue to push to pass the DREAM Act and to enact bipartisan comprehensive immigration reform that secures our borders, upholds the rule of law, protects our workers, unites families, and provides a pathway to legalization.

Marking the 40th anniversary of Title IX
This Saturday marks the 40th anniversary of Title IX of the Higher Education Act, which assured a woman’s right to educational equality. Passed by a Democratic-led Congress in 1972, the landmark legislation has not only promoted equal opportunity for women in athletics, it has bolstered equal access to educational opportunities in a full range of academic subjects, including science, technology, engineering, and math. My colleagues and I will continue to work to promote equality and opportunity for all women. By supporting the Paycheck Fairness Act, we reaffirm an American value: equal pay for equal work. Unfortunately, the legislation continues to be blocked by Republicans in Congress. More information about the bill can be found online.
