Wonderful “Girls” Of The World

Good morning!

Last Thursday night my mother and I saw Eve Ensler’s play “Emotional Creature” at the Berkeley Rep Theater.  My mother had no idea what to expect, and although, I had an inkling, it was so much more than I expected.

As I sat waiting for the play to start, I took a look around and “just noticed” that 90% of the audience were women and girls.  I thought, “I know that is a play about girls but I really wish there were more men and boys here.” Yes, girls need to support girls but we have learned that we need support from the males living on this planet too. Males need to be awakened to the plight of women in this world , especially since it is the males on this planet that are inflicting such pain and abuse to women worldwide.

And really when you think about it, many women need to be awakened to the plight of women as well. My mother who refuses to even contemplate getting a computer ( and sometimes I don’t blame her :) reads the newspaper daily.  But unless an international story makes it to her local newspaper or local news, she doesn’t really know the extent to what is happening to women in other parts of the world. (I’m trying to get her hooked on MSNBC, the HuffPo, and so far I think it is working :) And like many when she does hear of something horrific happening to women, it makes her cry, she feels deeply. But then like many she gets back into her own world and it is soon forgotten.

Eve Ensler keeps the plight of women in our faces because these women cannot be forgotten.

In “Emotional Creature” she takes us into the intimate lives of girls and young women, here and around the world, through song and dance and very engaging monologues that ran the gamut of making me smile, laughing out loud, shedding a few tears, to sobbing deeply. The monologues talked of wanting to be accepted by other girls, to a young girl seeking out God to save her clitoris from being mutilated, to the imprisonment of young factory girls who mass produce Barbie Dolls.

One of my favorites was a scene in celebration of the “My Short Skirt”  – what it means to wear one, and just as important what it doesn’t mean.

All 6 girls in the play were on stage the entire time either interacting together or performing solo – they were all amazingly talented and inspiring and so believable you got lost in their emotions…joy, fear, relief….and truly believed what they were acting out were actual experiences that happened in their own lives. They are all Wonderful Girls of the World.

I’ll leave it at that and encourage you to go to the show with your girlfriends…and guy friends…and keep the plight of women in our faces like Ensler. I promise I’ll do my part to not ever forget about these women and girls…to continue to support them…until the abuse STOPS.

Howie: Welcome back. As usual you make quite an entrance. How are you?

I, like my readers, are waiting to hear more. I just HOPE that what you can tell us will help, so that we can get Tsarme back to avoid these major anomalies that will occur if Tsarme doesn’t return. I HOPE you and Al are doing well.

Mike, MT: Nice to see you here as well. Let’s HOPE that there is a plan to counter. How are you doing?

David: My pleasure. Happy to help.

Readers: With all the banter about Chris Rock’s tweet, He’s so right on – I say “rock on with the truth”. As always, the response from white America is the same same.

Peace & Love. Can’t we just all live it and give it?  Blog me.

I love my country, but I hate that most whites here think it is more theirs than mine. What is wrong with recognizing the truth? Why are they so sensitive to hearing this country started out as a bastion for white men only?

I guess they think it makes the lie that our Constitution is so special to real for them.

  5. Donny Says:

What I find insane is why some white people consider Chris Rock is making racist remarks when he reminds us that white people enslaved his and enjoyed the 4th as if it was clueless to them that they were slavers.

    Donny

  6. Roy Says:

Why are we as whites so sensitive to being told that our ancestors behaved badly towards OTWs? I don’t feel that I am personally being attacked if I am reminded that whites were very abusive to others in the past.

  7. Preeti Says:

I still live on a reservation that you white bastards forced my ancestors on. So fuck you and your 4th.

Michelle, I don’t live in America, but I am glad to be a girl because you always have our back.

  9. Vance Says:

Howie, my Uncle called to say you were back. So I am. I didn’t like the way some went off on you a while back.

  10. Lipika Says:

Why do you whites think it is okay for you to remind us of the horrid stuff others have done to you, but get so defensive when others make a remark about what your race has done to others?

Your race came to our country, We welcomed you and you waited until you had the ability to kill us at will and then you set about exterminating my people. What was left you forced onto the most barren unproductive land in this nation.

Your blind celebration of “independence” day is an example of how you white devils can exist among the people without being detected. I live for the day the ghosts of my ancestors return to drive you back into the bowels of Hell where you came from.
    Lipika

  11. BH Says:

There was a PBS program, sort of a “Roots” affair, in which a black American scholar traced his roots back to the origin of the slave trade and the port that exported his ancestors. He made the pilgrimage to be told by the people there, that they wished their ancestors could have been sold into slavery, that they might be the beneficiaries of the opportunities and liberties he was currently enjoying. Quite a difference in perspective. It was a stunningly honest bit of reporting, and must have been difficult to swallow as the gentleman expected commiseration.

By the way, I don’t thing Chris Rock is struggling to make end’s meet, or having to wonder if he’ll ever buy own a house, or rent a decent apartment. Lots of people are, even white people. White People’s day seems to have worked out for him.

  12. Paul Says:

Most whites don’t like it when their bullshit account of history is revealed to be just that.

This is the Third installment on the tale of Tsarme. Here I will discuss the Vegetation Kingdom.

The marine life has the strongest telepathic power. The weakest are the Papians (Humanoid beings).

The Vegetation species make up about ½ of the population of the planet. They have been at war with the Marine life of the planet for dominance of the planet’s recourses for hundreds of years. The Vegetation species of Krijo sought out and made an alliance with the TAO.

They have shared in the control over the key resources of the planet with the Marine Kingdom for hundreds of years. One way they manifest this control is through their telepathic ability to control the Papians. Their telepathic control over the Papians work best with the male species of the Papians.

In the fourth installment I will discuss the third and final Kingdom on Krijo — The Animal Kingdom, which is the one Tsarme comes from.

    HOWIE

  14. Nora Says:

I’m a non white american who enjoys the 4th, but I am under no illusion that it wasn’t celebrated with the same enthusiasm when my race couldn’t appreciate the independence part by white america.

Why white america would consider it unpatriotic for OTWs to feel the pain of their kin and express it is beyond my understanding.

    Scrumptious Summer Salad

Panzanella salad, a traditional Tuscan dish, is a delicious way to use up leftover bread—and it is an impressive dish that is surprisingly simple to make. The secret is to toast the bread with the best-quality olive oil.

    4 slices day-old crusty country-style bread
¼ cup olive oil, plus 2 Tablespoons
1 garlic clove, peeled and cut in half
    1 Tablespoon balsamic vinegar

Salt and freshly ground black pepper
    2 cups ripe tomatoes, cubed
2 cups yellow bell pepper, cubed
2 cups red bell pepper, cubed
½ cup basil leaves, torn into pieces
10 pitted green or black olives

Brush the bread with one-quarter cup of olive oil. Rub the bread with the cut side of the garlic. Discard the garlic. Place the bread in a toaster oven or under the broiler until golden.

Mix the remaining two tablespoons of olive oil and the balsamic vinegar together in a large bowl. Add salt and pepper to taste. Add the tomatoes, peppers, basil and olives. Toss well.

Cut the toasted bread into large cubes, and toss into the salad just before serving. Makes two servings.

We will take our country back. Then ungrateful niggers like Chris Rock can be glad we don’t lynch smart mouth niggers anymore.

  17. Ruth Says:

BH, it would have been more apropos if you had signed in as BS because that bullshit account is typical justification type lies your kind puts out to make yourselves and others of your ilk feel okay with the evil that you do.

So I should feel okay that my ancestors were enslaved and had to endure rape, murder, and the inhumane treatments known to man because I am free.

You are one sick bastard and I hope the ghost of Lipika’s ancestors grab yours first. Look at the bright side with you gift for bullshit you shouldn’t have a problem.

Romney wants to evade taxing the rich a fair share and plans on giving them even MORE tax relief. Romney’s business ability is only proven to enrich Romney, not stimulate an economy still on life support after 8 years of Bush, and Romney wants to just do more of the same.

Obama is willing to make personal sacrifices and call on the country to do the same.
    Vote for Obama 2012

  20. KK-1 Says:

Republican voters whose only goal in life is to defeat Barack Obama should be ashamed of themselves.
They’re willing to flush their country down the toilet to satisfy their bigotry, their ego, or both.
Romney is EXACTLY the candidate they deserve and he CAN’T make a case against the health care mandate when he passed THE SAME THING in Massachusetts.

PS: Is the Wall street journal still pretending to be a newspaper, or have it’s journalists finally admitted they’re working for a right wing, corporate propaganda rag?

  21. Diane Says:

This normally a republican has switched sides. I just couldn’t stomach the thought of Romney being the President. I have friends that I know are against everything this man stands for but they will vehemently defend and support him now!?

Four Easy Tricks to Remember Names Better

Imagine this—you’re at a party when someone greets you by name with a hearty handshake, but you suddenly draw a blank and can’t for the life of you remember his name.

    How embarrassing!
We’ve all been in situations like that before, but we don’t have to be in them again.

“Your ability to remember is not necessarily something you’re born with—you can train yourself to become better,” said Scott Hagwood, a four-time National Memory Champion and author of Memory Power.

Here are Hagwood’s four favorite mental exercises that will train your brain to remember names more easily—and, better yet, they’re all so simple!

    WHEN YOU MEET SOMEONE NEW

Try at least one of the following tricks every time you meet a new person.

    Alliterate to Learn.

It’s amazing how much memory power you can get by using alliteration, the stringing together of words that start with the same sound.

To do this, when you first learn someone’s name, think of a characteristic that describes this person and that starts with the first letter of the person’s first name.

For example, you might think to yourself, Hannah wears high heels…Tom is tall…or Donna loves drama.

    Rhyme to Remember.
Rhyming is also a powerful memory booster.

So in your mind, rhyme a new person’s first name with an associative characteristic. For instance, Anna eats a banana…Max plays the sax…Jim likes to swim. (This won’t work for every person, of course, but it’s worth trying whenever possible.)

Link New Acquaintances with Old Ones.
Say you were just introduced to someone named George who seems to be a bit of a joker. Can you think of someone else you know well who is also named George and who has a similarly playful personality?

If so, make a point of linking these two people in your mind (“the two jokers”) so that the next time you see this new person, an image of the old George will pop into your mind—along with the name George. (Or maybe your old George has no sense of humor at all, so you can remember this “new George” as his complete opposite.)

    Repeat the New Name.
To firmly imprint a new name on your mind, repeat it both out loud and to yourself several times. Make a point of saying something such as “Great to meet you, Jason” at the beginning of the conversation and “Hope to see you again soon, Jason” at the end of the conversation.

    WHEN YOU MEET SOMEONE AGAIN

When someone you’ve already met reappears and his name slips your mind…what do you do? First, think of the above tricks that you used to remember this person’s name in the first place.

Does he have some characteristic that you notice that starts with the first letter of his name? Does he enjoy doing something that rhymes with his first name? Is he exactly like—or the complete opposite of—someone who you know who shares the same name?

If none of those methods works, don’t panic. When you’re in a group, be attentive, because someone else might say the name. Or just keep talking to the person without guessing at his name, because sometimes your subconscious works while you’re talking, and after a few minutes, the name might come to you.

If all else fails, accept defeat and politely say, “I remember talking to you before, but I’ve met so many people. Can you please give me your name again?” It won’t be held against you!

  23. Melanie Says:

Diane, has it occurred to you that it is because he is white and Obama is black?

    Just wondering?

  24. Hogan Says:

Thanks Howie, looking forward the next installment.

  25. Zhao Says:

    Thanks Howie.

Dessert for Breakfast to Lose Weight (Really!)

New research suggests that there’s an oh-so-delicious way to lose weight.
    You ready for it?

Eat a big breakfast that’s high in protein and high in carbs.
Here’s the best part—the carb part can be a sweet dessert.

    You heard me. Dessert.

It sounds counterintuitive, but the idea is that a large meal that includes sweets in the morning can be an effective way to reduce cravings later, which helps you lose weight.

But it made me think—would any type of dessert work? And just how large can it be? And, of course, before sending my readers off to enjoy cake at 8:00 in the morning, I wanted to hear about the scientific proof directly from the people who did the research…

    SWEETEN THE MEAL
In the study, overweight or obese men and women were split into two groups, and all were put on diets. Their diets were similar in some ways. For example, all men ate a total of 1,600 calories per day and all women ate a total of 1,400 calories per day…researchers gave them all menu guidelines and told them to cook meals at home…and their lunches and dinners consisted of mainly lean meats and salads.

But when it came to their breakfasts, that’s where the groups differed. One group ate a “small, low-carb” breakfast of just 300 calories that typically consisted of bacon, eggs and coffee. The other group, however, ate a “large, high-protein, high-carb” breakfast of 600 calories that usually included a chicken breast or tuna filet sandwich, a glass of milk and…here it comes…a serving of dessert (either chocolate, cookies, cake, ice cream, mousse or donuts) big enough to provide 150 to 200 calories.

The first 16 weeks of the study were strict. Subjects had to stick to their diets, no matter what. And both diets worked equally well—dieters on both regimens lost, on average, 33 pounds.

But during the “follow-up period,” over the second 16 weeks, subjects were encouraged to stick to their regimens but were told that they could give in to cravings if they felt like they had to. At week 32, members of the “small, low-carb” breakfast group had regained 22 pounds, on average… while members of the “large, high-protein, high-carb” breakfast group had lost an additional 15 pounds.

After giving the subjects questionnaires, researchers discovered that the “big breakfast” group had experienced fewer cravings for foods that are high in sugar and fat, compared with the “small breakfast” group.

The “big breakfast” group was also much more likely to feel satiated than the “small breakfast” group. And these feelings weren’t just in their heads—an analysis of their blood revealed scientific evidence that backed up what they said.

The “big breakfast” group saw their levels of ghrelin (a hormone that increases hunger) decrease at week 16 and stay low through week 32, while the “small breakfast” group didn’t see their ghrelin levels decrease at week 16, and by week 32, these levels were actually higher.

    NO MORE CONSTANT CRAVINGS

When I spoke with the author of the study, Daniela Jakubowicz, MD, a professor in the diabetes unit at Tel-Aviv University in Israel, she explained why the “big breakfast” group may have gotten such better results.

“From past research,” Dr. Jakubowicz said, “we know that food eaten early in the morning (usually before 9 am) reduces ghrelin to a greater extent than food eaten later in the day.

We also know,” she continued, “that high-carb foods, such as sweets, cause ghrelin to drop faster than other types of food.”

So if you’re hoping to shed pounds, once you decide your daily caloric goal, ask your doctor about eating a 150-to-200 calorie high-carb food, such as a dessert, with your breakfast. Yum!

I read this about the Libor subject that Anonz gave us a brief on.
    ====================
The Libor affair, described by the prime minister as a scandal, has led to the resignation of three of Barclays’ most senior executives in a matter of days, including chief executive Bob Diamond.

He appeared before MPs on the Treasury Select Committee this week, when he called the behaviour of those responsible for Libor rigging at the bank “reprehensible”.
Regulators in the UK and the US found that Barclays staff had tried to affect rates over a number of years, first for profit and then to reduce concerns about how much it was being affected by the financial crisis.
    =======================
We’ve just had our 4th of July celebrating Independence from British Banks(1776 to 1812) even Lincoln warned about their risky nature 50 yrs later.Today we are exposed again to the unprofessional-ism of the Banking Industry.

We had prohibition because drink was a problem. What will be our solution for Bankers who obviously have a gambling problem? Trouble is like most addicts they don’t play with their own money. Accountability has been a Class affair, and/ or what school you went to. It’s all about the myth of Free Trade.

Most of our troubles are due to a lack of teeth for the Anti Trust Laws. The monopolies commission needs a new set of dentures with a few large incisor teeth size regulations and penalties to at least give back some credibility to the myth of the free market. All it’s great investment opportunities these Banks have been passing on for their own illegal schemes.

I fear because so few really understand the significance of the issue it will be easy to camouflage the truth and keep on avoiding any real penalties for CHEATING.

  28. Henry Says:

White people are so in love with money that they always plot to steal a ton of it. Knowing that they worship the big thief. “If you steal $100, chances are you will go to jail, have a criminal record and be reduced to penury the rest of your life. Whereas if you steal $100,000,000,000, chances are you’ll get a slap on the wrist, no jail time at all and not even forfeiture of assets.”
