Last Abortion Clinic in Mississippi?

Good morning!

Thank you all for the wonderful wishes here, as well as messages through Facebook, e-mails, and phone calls. It was so nice to hear from all of you, and especially surprising to hear from some readers whom I haven’t heard from in awhile, or whom have been loyal readers but have never posted before. Thank you for making this girl feel so loved and appreciated.

I have to say that no matter how many times I see comments from citizens around the world, I am still amazed that so many people from so many different places tune in here. It is truly remarkable and brings me such joy.

Now…onto today’s write.

Judge Keeps Sole Miss. Abortion Clinic Open—for Now

A federal judge temporarily extended an injunction against a law that would effectively end abortion in the state.

By , and  | Posted Wednesday, July 11, 2012, at 5:07 PM ET

UPDATE: Mississippi’s last remaining abortion clinic will remain open for at least a little longer.

The Jackson Free Press reports that a federal judge on Wednesday extended a previously issued injunction against a state law that effectively bans abortion in Mississippi. Judge Daniel Jordan, the paper explains, upheld the July 1 injunction to give himself more time to get familiar with the Mississippi Board of Health rules at the center of the case.

The controversial law requires doctors performing abortions in the state to have admitting privileges at local hospitals, an unusual clearance for OB-GYNs. Although the law doesn’t specifically ban abortions, it would effectively end the procedure in the state by shutting down the only remaining clinic, something Gov. Phil Bryant has openly stated as the law’s objective. The measure, he has previously said, is “the first step in a movement, I believe, to do what we campaigned on: to say that we’re going to try to end abortion in Mississippi.”

Jordan imposed the injunction against the law because he questioned the motives of the bill’s high-profile backers. In Wednesday’s two-hour hearing on the issue, state attorneys defending the new law argued that the judge cannot block the law based on statements that the governor and lieutenant governor made about the intent of the law because they didn’t author the bill.

Meanwhile, the attorney for the clinic argued that the purpose of the law is not to benefit women’s health but to unconstitutionally restrict women’s access to abortion in the state.

Monday, July 2: A federal judge is making sure Mississippi’s only abortion clinic remains open for now. U.S. District Court Judge Daniel Jordan issued a temporary restraining order Sunday that blocked a new law that the Jackson Women’s Health Organization says could make Mississippi the only state without an abortion clinic, reports Reuters. Jordan has set a hearing for July 11 to decide whether the block on the law’s implementation should be extended.

“Plaintiffs have offered evidence—including quotes from significant legislative and executive officers—that the act’s purpose is to eliminate abortions in Mississippi,” the judge wrote. “They likewise submitted evidence that no safety or health concerns motivated its passage.”

Gov. Phil Bryant found the decision “disappointing,” according to his spokesman, reports CNN. The governor “plans to work with state leaders to ensure this legislation properly takes effect as soon as possible.”

Wednesday, June 27: Mississippi’s last remaining abortion clinic filed a federal lawsuit Wednesday to block a law that will likely make it impossible for the clinic to operate.

The Associated Press reports that the Jackson Women’s Health Organization contends that the law will effectively ban abortion in Mississippi and endanger women’s health in the process. The new law requires OB-GYNs who perform the procedures at clinics to have hospital admittance privileges, which the clinic says is impossible to get by the time the law will take effect Sunday.

Gov. Phil Bryant signed the bill with the intent to cut back on abortions in the state. Responding to concerns about the effect of the law on the Jackson Women’s Health Organization, Bryant said, “If it closes that clinic, then so be it.”

The clinic is asking a federal judge to temporarily block the law from being enforced. The clinic released a statement that unless the judge intervenes, it will be forced to stop providing abortions, “leaving those women with nowhere else to turn.”

Friday, June 22: Beginning next month, women may no longer be able to get an abortion in the state of Mississippi—despite the fact that the procedure will remain technically legal there.

The Associated Press explains: A new law passed earlier this year by the state’s GOP-dominated legislature will require all abortion clinic physicians to have staff and admitting privileges at a local hospital. The problem? None of the three doctors at the Jackson Women’s Health Organization, the state’s last remaining abortion clinic, has those privileges.

The three doctors are board certified in obstetrics and gynecology as the new law requires, but their applications to seven area hospitals for admitting privileges are still pending with the deadline less than two weeks away. If the Jackson clinic is forced to close its doors, Mississippi would become the first state without a dedicated abortion clinic, according to Bloomberg.

Correction: Because of a photo-provider error, a caption in an earlier version of this post misidentified Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder as Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant.

Michelle — WOW 174 Congratulations. That is an accomplishment in itself. You certainly deserve it all. In a world full of bull, it is a comforting to have something real and Uncensored to read and comment to.

Michelle, you have accomplished something worth complimentimg.

Now I will return to my ninth installment of the tale of Tsarme. When we left off, Azza sent Gaiel and Maz to find Tony and return him to this side of the wormhole. Tony was pulled through the crack in the wormhole himself while searching for Tsarme.

Azza is busy preventing beings from a parallel Universe from exiting their Universe into this one or from closing the crack until Gaiel and Maz return with Tony. Gaiel and Maz are heading for the dimension that Tony stepped into to rescue Tsarme. They are unaware that Tony is attempting to rescue Tsarme.

Tsarme was wearing a Kabol when he exited the worm hole. A Kabol is a tracking restraint used by his captors to prevent prisoners from escaping. If they can not be found within a certain period which can be programmed by the captors, it will explode, killing the wearer. Entry into the parallel Universe set it off and Tsarme while not killed was mortally wounded.

Just a few more installmednts to come. If you enjoy keeping up with this tale of Tsarme, stay with me.

    Hidden Danger in Fertility Drugs

If you’re having trouble getting pregnant and you (or your wife) are considering using an ovary-stimulating drug, then you should know that this type of drug comes with a very serious side effect.

Startling new research out of France suggests that children resulting from such pregnancies are more likely to develop a very serious disease.
Any couple who is thinking about using these drugs should be aware of this extremely important information…

    DRUGS THAT BOOST EGG PRODUCTION

Ovary-stimulating drugs, which are either oral or injected, are meant to help the ovaries either produce more eggs or produce eggs more regularly—both of which increase the chances of fertilization.

These medications come in several forms, including the brand names Clomid, Repronex, Bravelle and Pregnyl. The hope is to produce a viable egg that can be fertilized either naturally or through assisted reproductive technologies, such as artificial insemination or in vitro fertilization.

Such measures typically aren’t taken until a couple has tried to conceive naturally for at least 12 months without success—10% to 15% of couples, according to the Mayo Clinic, fall into this category.

The effectiveness of the ovary-stimulating drug depends on the underlying cause(s) of infertility, but one study, for example, indicated that these drugs were able to produce ovulation in 70% to 75% of patients affected by polycystic ovary disease, the largest cause of ovulation difficulties.

So these drugs certainly do help many women get pregnant, but, as I mentioned earlier, they’re not without substantial risks.

    SCARY STATS

The study: Led by Jérémie Rudant, MD, PhD, a cancer epidemiology researcher assistant at the Institut National de la Santé et de la Recherche Médicale in Paris, scientists conducted interviews with mothers and found that children born after their mother’s use of fertility drugs were more than twice as likely to develop leukemia, a cancer that affects the blood and bone marrow and is sometimes, but not always, curable.

The risk was 2.6 times higher for the most common form of leukemia, acute lymphoblastic leukemia, and 2.3 times higher for acute myelogenous leukemia, a rarer type.

To help you put this in perspective, the typical risk for a child to develop leukemia before age 15 is about 1 in 1,500, so this risk would rise to about 1 in 600 among children born to women who used fertility drugs.

The researchers did not track how old the kids were when they developed leukemia.

    WHAT’S TO BLAME?

Dr. Rudant told me that lowered fertility itself—and not just the use of ovary-stimulating drugs—may play a role in this daunting picture, because the study also showed that children of women who had tried for more than a year to get pregnant and then conceived naturally (without the use of fertility drugs) still had a 50% greater risk of developing acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

But since children of women who had trouble getting pregnant and also took fertility drugs had an even higher risk for leukemia, it’s hard not to think that the drugs might be adding to the leukemia risk, as well. How come?

The short answer is, we don’t know. “Right now there is no specific biological theory as to why that might be the case,” said Dr. Rudant.

IF YOU’VE ALREADY TAKEN FERTILITY DRUGS

Women who have already taken these types of drugs may be rightfully concerned. Unfortunately, the development of leukemia—assuming there hasn’t been some obvious cause such as radiation exposure—is still a mystery to medical science, and we don’t know of any way to reduce the chance that any particular child, regardless of how he was conceived, will develop the disease.

If you used fertility drugs and are concerned, you’ll want to know the signs and symptoms of leukemia, which include a swollen belly (from an enlarged spleen), swollen lymph nodes in the armpit, neck or groin, repeated infections, weight loss, low appetite, fatigue or weakness, bone or joint pain, easy bruising or bleeding, tiny red spots on the skin, fever and/or night sweats.

But for your own peace of mind, just know that any of these symptoms can be caused by other things—less serious things—than leukemia.

The religious right who force their moral beliefs on others are nothing but “religious talibans”.

  8. Lex Says:

What are the authority worshipers who force their politics and laws on people who prefer to follow their religious beliefs ? I would call them “government Taliban”

  9. Lex Says:

Fewer than six hundred men, mostly corrupt lawyers, and business men think up these “laws” to dominate several hundred million people, and take their money.

They tell you you are free, and that they represent you, but they do not even want you in the same room with them, will not take your phone calls, and only ask you to vote on issues of minimal importance.

They also steadily create more and more laws to further dominate . control, and keep you under surveillance. Are those the “laws”, and the system you so strongly support ? Brainwashed fool.

  10. Ln Says:

The republican forces at work here are moving the US BACKWARDS!! So much social progress over the last century, only to be nullified by conservatives that are scared to move into the 21st century with the rest of the world…. sad really

  11. John Says:

You liberals are insane. It’s moving us “backwards” to require that a doctor performing abortions is actually an OB/GYN and have hospital privileges? An abortion clinic with unqualified personnel is no different than those mythical back-alley abortion providers….

  12. Mark Says:

It should be a non-issue. Murder is against the law, but it’s okay to kill an innocent baby??? Murder is murder inside or outside the womb. The only murder that is legal is self-defense. So explain how killing a baby is self-defense.

  13. Gd Says:

John, It is moving backwards when you make rules that you know can not ever fullfilled. This would be a non-issue if they would give them hospital priviledges but none will.

Let me put this into a lang you can understand. What if a state made a gun law that required you to get approval from your local Brady Campaign office. That is kinda what is happening in Miss.

  14. Sam Says:

This has nothing to do with republicans or conservatives. Abortion is killing a helpless and innocent human being. This is the WORST kind of murder, yet it is progress?????

  15. Jean Says:

Abortion is not against the law; the Supreme Court said so.

  16. Paul Says:

Just who are we to tell a woman what she can and can’t do with her body?

  17. Danielle Says:

Jean, Too bad your mother let you live. You telling me that what Supreme Court says it’s OK?? SO then why ACA is bad and Supreme Court says it’s Constitutional Your comment is a moot.

Furthermore if Supreme COurt says it’s OK to kill your kid, you will start shooting??? It will be called the partially grown abortion, I am tired of my kid so the Supreme said it’s OK to kill.

You are stupid. Abortion is a murder, killing innocent baby that did not ask to be created. I call it – murder to avoid responsibility for it’s own action. Cowardice towards life and responsibility.

The Supreme Court approves enough stupid laws that they don’t even know what they approve or not, what is good for the people or for the politics. Get a life and some common sense and some kindness in your heart if you have one.

  18. Robert Says:

Conservative Republicans are against government regulation…except when it supports their social causes!

  19. Jack Says:

I am so sick and tired of that worn out out arguement that a woman has a right to do what she wants with her body!!!!! A baby IS NOT part of her body!!! It is it’s own body!!! What gives anyone the right to kill the most helpless and innocent human beings!!! This has NOTHING to do with religion. This is about murder.

  20. SC Says:

Judge Dan Jordan, thank you for being reasonable. It’s a rare quality.

  21. YR Says:

Why is it that the vast majority of pro-lifers aren’t vegan? I’m just sayin’. Can they not connect the dots and carry the philosophy all the way through?

Oh yeah, I’m “pro-life,” but, uh…, not when it comes to cows, …or chickens, …or pigs, …or ducks, …or fish, …or deer, …or, uh, any of God’s other creatures on the planet… and I don’t want you to have an abortion, but I don’t want to adopt kids or anything like that. Yeah, you just do what I say and shut up now… Huh?

  22. Sarah Says:

I really think men should stop involving themselves in anything regarding pregnancy. You don’t have to carry a baby for 9 months, you don’t have to go through the physical and emotional change, you don’t have to watch your career fall apart, or end up doing all of the child rearing and housework. Pregnancy doesn’t affect your life at all and rearing children has a minimum affect on your life.

How many men barely help out a home? How many men with wives that work full time jobs and work as hard as him barely help out at home? I can tell you how many plenty. You want women to not get abortions then make it where they are not completely drained of life. Make it where they don’t feel hopeless and exhausted as if there is no one to help.Make it where they don’t lose everything and have to crumble up all their dreams.

Majority of the fathers protesting abortions do the bare minimum for their kids, they go to work and they come home and to them that is enough.

They shout to their full time working wives that they work 10 hours days and can’t be bothered to help out, yet she works too and does all of the housework, child rearing and cooking after she’s off from work. You instead come home and kick your feet up and get lost in King of the Hill episodes.

People say women have options and the truth is we really don’t have option that don’t come without lots of pain. Making the choice to have an abortion is hard.

Many women choose this because they know that the father like most men is not going to participate as much as he should and her life will become harder while the father has the benefit of being the parent with no worries.

Sacrifices are part and parcel with parenthood but for the mother they are great and many. You never bounce back from them. Get corporate America and colleges across the world to offer free child care so that the mothers can continue in their careers and not be stuck being “just the housewife” who the husband and the rest of the society sees as no value and women will stop aborting their kids.

The world is not and has not given women options that are good. No matter what women do it is bad. If they are purposefully child-free and make the choice to never have kids, you are bad and selfish because you can give life but won’t.

If you have a kid and become a housewife to raise that kid, you are leeching off your supporting husband and not intelligent. If you have a kid and decide to go back to work, you are bad because you should be home raising your kid and are passing them off to strangers to be raised. It goes on and on and on and on…GIVE US BETTER OPTIONS!!!!!!!!

  23. RM Says:

I so agree YR#21, they also apparently overwhelmingly support the death penalty….. what do you expect…. consistency?

  24. KW Says:

My sister is a hero,my parents were very proud of what she has done. I am proud. It is sad that a woman, young girl has to face a mob of strangers yelling at her,at a time when her personal choice to terminate a pregnancy has probably been a tough choice to make. This decision should be between a woman ,God, and the doctor.

Women like my sister have fought for women’s,rights since the 1960′s.
My mother knew how important reproductive freedom was, crucial, and before her death she was saddened that young women today did not appreciate what those before had done to pave the way to assure that reproductive freedom would remain safe, available, accessible and private.

Regardless of what you personally feel about abortion, you should not judge what others do. My sister has helped many at a time when they had nowhere else to turn. It is unreal that the citizens of Mississippi have elected such scary men to control their destiny.
