Good morning!

I just had to jump in on this one.

Paula Broadwell Emails Sent To State Department Military Liaison: AP Source

Paula Broadwell, the woman reported to be having an affair with CIA Director David Petraeus, sent harassing emails to State Department official, the AP reported.

Jill Kelley, the woman who received emails from Broadwell that prompted her to alert FBI, reportedly works as a State Department military liaison.

According to the Washington Post, the woman was “frightened” for her safety and contacted the FBI for protection. The Post describes the emails as “threatening.”

The New York Times reported that the woman’s complaint led the FBI to learn of Petraeus’ affair. According to the Times, officials decided to investigate Broadwell and stumbled upon emails that revealed the relationship.

Broadwell is an expert on military affairs and the author of a biography on Petraeus. She is married with two children and lives in Charlotte, N.C.

Petraeus is married to Holly Petraeus, who is the assistant director of service-member affairs at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

MSNBC broke the news of the affair, and Petraeus’ decision to resign as CIA Director, on Friday.

According to the New York Times, some senior members of Congress were alerted of the news several hours before the story broke. White House officials knew as early as Wednesday night.

Here’s more from the AP:

WASHINGTON — A senior U.S. military official says the author who had an affair with David Petraeus sent harassing emails to a woman who was the State Department’s liaison to the military’s Joint Special Operations Command.

The official says 37-year-old Jill Kelley in Tampa, Fla., received the emails from Petraeus biographer Paula Broadwell that triggered an FBI investigation.

The official was not authorized to discuss the case publicly and spoke on the condition of anonymity.

Another person who knows Kelley and Petraeus confirmed their friendship and said she saw him often.

Petraeus quit as CIA director last week after acknowledging an extramarital relationship with a woman – later identified as Broadwell.

The FBI probe began several months ago with a complaint against Broadwell. That investigation led to Broadwell’s email account, which uncovered the relationship with Petraeus.

  1. David Says:

A federal agent who launched the investigation that ultimately led to the resignation of Central Intelligence Agency chief David Petraeus was barred from taking part in the case over the summer due to superiors’ concerns that he had become personally involved in the case, according to officials familiar with the probe.

New details about how the Federal Bureau of Investigation handled the case suggest that even as the bureau delved into Mr. Petraeus’s personal life, the agency had to address questionable conduct by one of its own—including allegedly sending shirtless photos of himself to Jill Kelly, the woman involved in the case.

  2. Bill Says:

    A definite WTF moment there.

And THESE are the people “running” things?!

  3. Anonymous Says:

“In politics, everyone regards themselves as moderate, because they know some other sumbitch who’s twice as crazy as they are.” -Timothy Tyson

  4. Sheila Says:

Michelle, I’m glad you picked this topic. Spies, Generals, obsessed FBI agents, crazy mistresses. Its got everything.

  5. SP Says:

But apparently the same FBI agent was also a friend of the woman who received the harassing emails, and was the one who filed the complaint on her behalf.

So the same guy that initiated the investigation that led to Petreaeus also found a Congressman to blab to when it looked like the FBI might just close the investigation.

And as I said in the other thread, the effort the FBI put into the case in the early stages seems way out of proportion to “5-10 harassing emails” to a woman who wasn’t even a paid employee of the US gov’t.

So I can easily believe someone in the FBI really wanted to get Petraeus with this.

  6. Anonymous Says:

So it does sound like the guy was out to get Petraeus. Is it possible that aside from Petraeus having an obsessed girlfriend, the woman she was jealous of also had an obsessed boyfriend?

I’m half expecting Petraeus’s long lost twin-brother to show up.

  7. David Says:

And if this link is to be believed, the FBI is currently raiding Paula Broadwell’s home.
    http://twitchy.com/2012/11/12/breaki…roadwells-home

  8. Owen Says:

The media tells you that the FBI agent sent a shirtless pic of himself to a woman he was supposed to be protecting, but you don’t doubt the integrity of the FBI?

You don’t think this whole episode was to kill the career of a general who would tried to fuck the president? The media is trying to make this complicated, but keep your eye on the ball.

  9. Jackie Says:

Even money bet that the Feds will find something to keep Ms. Broadwell in an unnamed location and far from the media for the duration.

Giving Zero and company all the cover they need as all of this becomes one more part of ‘An ongoing investigation’ and off limits to an already complacent, sycophant media.

Expect the Feds to swoop down on Ms. Kelley’s digs by the end of the week. Who knows, there might even be some mud wrestling or a cage match!

  10. Shane Says:

    Shit just got real.

  11. Paul Says:

David #7, you are just another sneaky republican asshole. That site you are pushing readers of this blog to check out is a known Right wing run blog to slander President Obama.

It was set up by some rich asshole to put out conspiracy theories about Obama being this or that as long as it tells the public that he is dishonest, not a true american and is attempting to take over the country.

Kiss my ass you piece of shit.

    Paul

  12. Mack Says:

Dang, that big titted twin has all the guys panting after her. First she lures Petraeus away from his mistress and then the FBI Agent is all hound dog in love? Three careers wrecked over this lady already (counting the mistress/biographer).

I just don’t see it. Takes more than huge jugs to make a woman attractive. imho Her face is all sharp, angular lines.

Now, the mistress, Paula Broadwell is a different story. I can see why Petraeus is interested.

  13. Jack Says:

That agent, apparently, had been told repeatedly to butt out, then he went to the Congresscritter to tattle. The Congresscritter he went to was Eric Cantor.

This agent is a republican trying to help the Republicans to get something on Obama. But they are being played by Anonz.

Don’t fuck with the man boys. He takes no prisoners.

    Jack

  14. Lance Says:

The FBI probe into the sex scandal that led to the resignation of CIA director David Petraeus has expanded to ensnare Gen. John R. Allen, the commander of U.S. and NATO troops in Afghanistan, the Pentagon announced early Tuesday.

According to a senior U.S. defense official, the FBI has uncovered between 20,000 and 30,000 pages of “potentially inappropriate” emails between Allen and Jill Kelley, a 37-year-old married Tampa woman whose close friendship with Petraeus ultimately led to his downfall….

The soap-operatic quality of this is quite staggerring. Kevin Drum is a wonkish center-left blogger whose natural territory is posts with lots of charts about Social Security and he can’t stop writing about this. What the hell were these people doing? It’s like some Coen Brothers movie.

  15. Health Info Says:

METABOLIC SYNDROME LINKED TO KIDNEY STONES

Over 50 million Americans have what is called metabolic syndrome. The syndrome is a cluster of numerous factors — chief among them are abdominal obesity, high blood pressure, insulin resistance and elevated LDL cholesterol levels and triglycerides — that increase risk of coronary artery disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes. Now a new study reports that having metabolic syndrome also increases risk for yet another condition — uric acid kidney stones.
For the study, researchers at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas collected blood and urine samples from 148 people who did not have kidney stones. They found that the urine of participants who had metabolic syndrome was more acidic compared with those who did not have the syndrome. This finding held true even after researchers adjusted for other factors known to influence urine acidity, including age, gender and body mass index.
PH LEVELS LOWER IN METABOLIC SYNDROME PATIENTS
I spoke with Naim Maalouf, MD, assistant professor of internal medicine at the Medical Center, who was the lead author of the study. He told me that not every person with metabolic syndrome also had the problem of urine acidity, but the vast majority did and this was true regardless of the particular metabolic syndrome factors they had. The study didn’t delve into which of those factors was most likely to bring about a stone, he says, rather it established that simply having metabolic syndrome heightens the risk. The researchers did this by evaluating the pH level of participants’ urine — people without metabolic syndrome had an average pH of 6.1 whereas those with it had an average of 5.7. The pH level that makes stone development likely is 5.5, says Dr. Maalouf. A low pH equals higher acidity.
Uric acid stones make up only 10% of all kidney stones and they are difficult to detect and different to treat. Unlike most other stone types, these stones can’t be visualized on a regular X-ray and typically require a CT scan for detection. Dr. Maalouf says that people with metabolic syndrome should be aware of this potential problem so they can help the doctor diagnose the stone faster and thereby get quicker relief. Prescription medication (potassium citrate sold under the brand name Urocit-K) is often used to keep this type of kidney stone from forming, but you can also help prevent one by drinking plenty of fluids and reducing animal protein in your diet, says Dr. Maalouf. Even better, he adds, do what you must to eliminate or control the symptoms that landed you in the metabolic syndrome category by attempting to lose weight through exercise and lifestyle changes.

  16. Jack Says:

The spin by the Wall Street Journal, a republican rag that is dedicated to ruining Obama gave their take on the creepy stalking FBI agent.

But the agent, who was not identified, continued to “nose around” about the case, and eventually his superiors “told him to stay the hell away from it, and he was not invited to briefings,” the official said. The Wall Street Journal first reported on Monday night that the agent had been barred from the case.

Later, the agent became convinced — incorrectly, the official said — that the case had stalled. Because of his “worldview,” as the official put it, he suspected a politically motivated cover-up to protect President Obama.

The agent alerted Eric Cantor, the House majority leader, who called the F.B.I. director, Robert S. Mueller III, on Oct. 31 to tell him of the agent’s concerns.

  17. Victor Says:

Okay General John R. Allen who took over for General Petreaus as the Commander of the Afghan theatre of war emailed Jill Kelly 20 to 30,000 emails.

How the fuck did he have the time to do that? It seems he inherited more than just Afghan from David Petraeus, he also inherited the loose drawers of Jill Kelly.

Boobs, Bullets and Butts. And here I thought your blog might get boring once the elections were over Michelle.

    Victor

  18. Albert Says:

Damn, that big titted twin Jill Kelly, has all the guys panting after her. First she lures Petraeus away from his mistress and then the FBI Agent is all hound dog in love?

  19. Irene Says:

Okay boys this is my story with a picture of the hot Mrs. Jill Kelly.
    ====================================
An FBI agent was pulled off the investigation into David Petraeus’s illicit contact with Paula Broadwell when he reportedly became obsessed with Jill Kelley, the other woman involved in the probe, The Wall Street Journal reports.

The FBI found that the agent had sent shirtless photos of himself to Jill Kelley, the Tampa woman who reportedly received a half dozen emails from Paula Broadwell that warned her to stay away from David Petraeus. The emails were sent from anonymous accounts.

That same agent was a friend of Jill Kelley’s and he had started the FBI investigation into the emails – which eventually led to David Petraeus’s downfall – after Kelley came to him for help upon receiving the anonymous threats.

The FBI declined to identify the agent, who is now under an internal investigation by the agency’s Office of Professional Responsibility.

After Jill Kelley, a married mother of three, told the agent about the emails, he referred the matter to a cyber crimes unit.

Shortly thereafter, the agent was barred from the case over concerns that he “might have grown obsessed with the matter”, the Wall Street Journal reports.

An FBI agent was pulled off the investigation into David Petraeus’s illicit contact with Paula Broadwell when he reportedly became obsessed with Jill Kelley

Even after he was prohibited from involvement in the case, the agent decided to contact a member of Congress, Republican David Reichert, about the matter.

He complained that senior FBI officials were going to “sweep the matter under the rug”, the FBI learned.

Meanwhile, investigators had traced the harassing emails back to accounts used by Paula Broadwell, a 40-year-old married mother of two from Charlotte, North Carolina. In one of the emails, Paula Broadwell accused Jill Kelley of touching “him” underneath a table and another email asked if Kelley’s husband was aware of her actions, according to the newspaper.

Jill Kelley, 37, is a volunteer who organizes social events for military families in the Tampa area. She often hosts the events at her million-dollar Bayshore Boulevard home, which is located only a couple miles from MacDill Air Force base, where David Petraeus was leader of the U.S. Central Command.

“The Kelley mansion became the place to be seen for coalition officers,” according to the Tampa Bay Times.

Jill Kelley’s husband, Dr. Scott Kelley, is a highly sought-after surgeon who specializes in a rare type of minimally invasive surgery to cure cancer of the esophagus.

Since the Kelleys have been in Tampa, one or both have been subjects of lawsuits nine times – including an $11,000 judgment against them that originated in Pennsylvania, according to the Tampa Bay Times.

  20. Joseph Says:

I don’t have all the facts regarding the resignation of CIA Director David Petraeus over an extramarital affair, but it appears that he resigned only after the FBI discovered the affair and confronted him with it. Until then, he didn’t seem to mind being a security risk, and allowing his country to be vulnerable accordingly.

  21. Social Butterfly Says:

Kind of ironic that heterosexuals in the military turned out to be a bigger problem than gays serving their country.

    /SB

  22. Human Events Says:

    GOOD AFTERNOON TO EVERYONE!

The tangled web that is Washington certainly is full of intrigue this week. The Defense Department and the CIA are embroiled in a scandal that seems ripped from the pages of the National Enquirer. The latest on that scandal is below from John Hayward. On the other side of the river, on Capitol Hill, Congress is officially back and facing the fiscal cliff. The most up-to-date report from the Hill is from Hope Hodge and it is below. Will Republicans raise taxes and gut defense to avoid sequestration? We’ll find out.

Also – there are a few interesting links from around the web, including Paul Ryan’s first interview since the election and a profile on Rand Paul and his plans in the Senate.

    Talk to you all tomorrow,

    – Adam Tragone, Managing Editor

  23. Zen Lill Says:

If a CIA director can’t hide an affair, who can? What a story. He clearly wasn’t the only one thinking with a little head, sounds like a man in a boat was open to the suggestion(s), there are 2 matahari’s and who cares how they look/tit size, one or both are clearly attractive to these 2 men, and there is someone who fits that bill for everyone, there’s no explaining biology and attraction it just is…

…I couldn’t care less who he screws around with frankly, that’s not my biz, but when he’s dumb enough to compromise national security and write dumb things in emails, well that’s just stupid.

    Luv, Zen Lill

  24. Ruth,SM Says:

Michelle, confronted with the possibility of a Romney/Ryan presidency, the you sounded the alarm admirably. You were the most articulate and insightful of all the pundits, even the ones on MSNBC, generally.

You displayed an earnestness that was incredibly effective in cutting through the usual Media spin this election.

400 years of oppression sharpens your powers to gauge authenticity, so Michael Eric Dysom, Amy Goodman, Al Sharpton, and Melissa Harris-Perry were on point every time. But a new sister to the horizon held your own.

Everyone took a cue from them, the MSNBC gang and you.

Thank you for you have done. I look forward to welcoming you to our family here in France. Please, tie up your bundle of worries there and hurry over to billionaires that have your back.

    Ruth, SM

  25. Larry Says:

Once again, you nailed it Zen Lill. I hope we will be able to discuss politics among other things when I return to our country’s shores.

    Larry

  26. Ruth,SM Says:

Sorry about the misprint Michelle, I meant to say, as a new sister to the horizon you more than held your own.

My girls can’t wait to meet their famous aunt. You have quite a following along the French Italian border, especially in Ventimiglia. It is the town we stay at during the population explosion periods along the French Riviera border.

You also have blog fans, in the border towns of Bordighera, Italy, Menton, France, and Cote d’Azur(I was once mistaken for you there). So come and let me introduce you to your loving fans.

The girls are in Nice now, so this would be a good time for a return visit.

    Ruth, SM

  27. Juanita Says:

I read that residents of more than 30 states have filed secession petitions with the “We the People” program on the White House website.

Of course you know that everyone of those states are the southern or red states romney carried in the election. They other thing is that those southern states couldn’t survive without federal help.

The math tells it all. The federal government sends from 3 to 25 dollars back to those states for every dollar they send to the federal from their citizens federal taxes.

According to romney they are the prime want something for nothing people. I guess racism can make you act in your on worst interest.

    Juanita

  28. Jordon Says:

Another thought…I don’t know about you, but I, for one, would expect the top spy in the nation to be skilled enough to have an affair and not get caught….seems to me that even if you are of the ‘it’s personal, none of our business’ crowd here today, even you may accept the premise that he, as top spy, should have been skilled enough in espionage to keep it a secret.

  29. Nana Says:

No, the larger point here is why is this a story? Some Republican thought he had a “gotcha moment” about the President and it’s turning out to be a big can of worms for all of the participants who ARE Republican.

You have two men who acted like a couple of kids turned loose in a chocolate factory and two women who thought they were participants in Housewives of Tampa Bay.

C’mon, people…if you had spent half as much time on the the house members who got caught diddling, perhaps we would have a halfway decent House of Representatives.

  30. Babara Says:

20-30,000 emails, over 2 years. If each one took a minute to type and send – that’s 41 a day. Maybe an hour or two spent on sexting emails, a day! (yes, some were business – and not all monkey business)

Perhaps they could reimburse we taxpayers for the time and money they wasted?

And really – you’d think the head of the army and CIA would be a time consuming job. Like you’d think being president, or in congress might be a busy job. Yet, these guys can take months – YEARS – running to keep their jobs. What are we paying them for???

  31. Robin Says:

The chief of a spy agency didn’t think people would be spying on him? This is what happens when men think with their ……….. appendage.

  32. Martin Says:

No one in this mess is innocent or even just guilty of minor crimes. But the sexual affairs are not at all the scandal. Who cares who initiated sex and who was too weak to resist or whatever? Adults have adulterous affairs all the time.

What matters here is that Broadwell, in the guise of journalist, sold the image of her lover as a superhuman genius when in fact his record in Iraq and Afghanistan was short of mediocre and bordering on disastrous. And then there is the question of whether she spilled extremely sensitive state secrets on Benghazi just to puff herself up.

It also matters that Kelley and her FBI would-be boyfriend took it upon themselves to read the CIA director’s email. So now even the CIA director can be investigated by someone with marginal access?

Both the men and women here live up to the worst stereotypes about their genders – women fawning over powerful men in uniform, men losing all semblance of judgment when in the presence of hot women. They are all to blame for acting like teen Twilight fans instead of adults.

  33. Human Events Says:

    GOOD AFTERNOON TO EVERYONE!

Breaking today is the news that Gen. David Petraeus will voluntarily testify to both the House and Senate Intelligence Committees about Benghazi. John Hayward has that story. Yesterday, Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) pushed for both Petraeus and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to testify about the Libyan debacle. We’ll see if Clinton will go to the Hill…

I spoke to former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich yesterday about the other big story in Washington: the looming fiscal cliff. Newt says that Republicans shouldn’t cave to the pressure from outside media and pundits and go ‘Democratic-lite’ and cave to the president’s demands. As he told me yesterday, “We [Republicans] need to respect the fact that he won the presidency, but he needs to respect that we won the House.” You can read my story below.

    Talk to you all tomorrow,

    – Adam Tragone, Managing Editor

  34. Louis Says:

I wonder if they will adopt our constitution. You know have a president. Of course he will be white. No black or Latinos or Asians or gays or Muslims or Jews or woman or any religion that is not the right bible thumper group. Oh they will have guns.

They will need them to kill for food. After while they will start hating each other. Because in the end no one agrees with everyone.

  35. Patrick Says:

All people who do not believe in the Democratic process of this country should leave and find a place where they can be happy.

I can’t help but wonder how many social security recipients and other people on some type of federal assistance program signed this.

    Hicks, are so stupid.

  36. Green Says:

I am all for stripping the citizenship rights of all individuals who sign such petitions…if they resided in a foreign country and submitted such a letter, they would be granted their wish, so I think the white house should send each one the paperwork to finish he process of removing themselves as a citizen of our country…and eliminating their Medicare and Medicaid coverage right along with it…just think of he savings that would follow.

  37. Silas Says:

Fuck you nigger lovers and mud people. I see those petitions as a Manifestation of the faith, passion and genuine hope we felt in having Mitt Romney become our President….. and how we feel about Barack Hussein Obama for another four years. Ugh.

  38. Chelsey Says:

Honestly, Get over yourselves. We live in the best country, the US, the land of the free. All these states are in debt. How will you all survive?

I know I don’t want my son growing up in a tent in the middle of the woods, eating berries and leaves. We all need to stick together, and pull through as a team.

  39. Sonja Says:

The Koch brothers ought to buy their own country (I recommend Somalia) and move all the secessionists and Tbaggers to it.

They could live out their lives in their very own free market, healthcare free, gun toting, gay free, abortion-less, minority free utopia

  40. Stevan Says:

What happens when all 50 states file to succeed? The numbers are growing larger. We got a corrupt administration that disregards the constitution and reinterprets its language to force their agendia.

Then assigns radical idelog judges to the courts that share their extreamiest views. I will sign that petition.

  41. Benjamin Says:

The guy who started the Texas petition thinks that our “economic difficulties” are “stemming from” the federal budget being out of balance, instead of the other way around. Yeah, let’s all listen to him.

  42. Gabriel Says:

Stevan, Your side lost, big time, get over it!

  43. Reba Says:

Crazy neo-fascists signing away their citizenship is what this amounts to! Hopefully a few million will sign these and we can remove their citizenship.

  44. Kathy Says:

One word to all of these people:

    GO.

    What’s stopping you?

    Get out!

Live somewhere else if you don’t like the U.S.

Who is making you stay here?

    Leave.

    Bye.

(from a state where no one is that stupid)

  45. Elba Says:

Ditto for Kathy and take the fat slob Rush with you.

  46. Jerry Says:

Nothing has changed. Are the “leaders” are still in place. What do you who voted for Obama will improve? Not jobs or the ecomony (check out the stock market in the past 10 days).

NONE of the Republicans in the House were elected from their district to raise taxes. It is not going to happen the way Obama demains and that will mean the Bush tax cuts will expire on 1/1/2013. Enjoy Obama’s 2nd term.

  47. Glenda Says:

The current crop of what passes as leaders in the Republicanan party is not up to the task since they are completely beholden to the Tea Party, Wall Street Vulture Capitalists, NRA, Norquist, and the Chamber of Commerce.

But thank God that Nancy Pelosi has decided to return. She can help this crooked lot to their exit come 2014.

  48. Scott Says:

Pelosi is returning? Thank goodness! We will need her when we regain the house in 2014. We are already moving our Women, Blacks and Hispanics into republican controlled districts. (I know it’s not true but don’t tell the rebubbacans)
