The State Of Female America

Good morning!

Blogging yesterday about the women killed in the garment factory in Bangladesh made me think about the different circumstances that we women endure throughout our lives. It made me think…huh…would conditions be so lax if it were dominantly men working in those factories? Maybe…but maybe not.

Women across the world endure things…some very horrific things, that men rarely, if ever, have to think about: Murder, rape, abuse, slavery, poor working conditions, less pay, less benefits…

Evidently driving through Oakland this afternoon, as I tuned into the radio, I wasn’t the only one contemplating the ‘experiences’ that women face as they go about their day.  What I was thinking was right there talking back to me, and anyone else listening.

If you’re interested, this is what I was listening to as I tuned into Democracy Now. It’s not long so if you’ve got the time, it’s here for your viewing. But as Amy Goodman warns, some of what is expressed in this interview is not easy to watch. You do not have to imagine what women who actually live through these heinous acts, feel so deeply.

Eve Ensler on “The State of Female America,” Her Play “Emotional Creature” & Women Violence in Congo

We spend the rest of the hour with someone who has fought tirelessly for women’s rights here in the United States and around the world: Eve Ensler. Her new play is called “Emotional Creature” and is now playing in New York City. Ensler is the award-winning playwright and creator of “The Vagina Monologues” and V-Day, a global movement to stop violence against women and girls. Her new campaign is called One Billion Rising. Ensler will be speaking tonight on “The State of Female America,” moderated by Laura Flanders, in New York City. “One of the things we are trying to deal with and make happen with One Billion Rising is to look at the intersection between the violence that happens to women in the homes, in the streets, and at their jobs,” Ensler says. [Includes rush transcript]

******

Readers: What do you think is the state of female America?…female global? What women go through…what women endure is beyond our imaginations. Because unless we have actually lived it, we really do not know how dreadful it is.  All I know, is this cannot continue.

Thoughts? Comments? Blog me.

Did you see Obama live this morning?  For those who did, here’s a reminder: Tweet Congress: #My2K – If you have no idea what this means click here.

Wow – just saw the comments. Got to go  -  will read them later on.

    Could Red Wine Help Diabetes?

Q: I have diabetes. Is it safe for me to drink red wine—or even recommended?

A: Red wine in moderation usually is not harmful to people with diabetes and may benefit them by decreasing stress and lessening feelings of deprivation. But talk to your doctor…

If you take insulin: Alcohol lowers blood sugar, so you may need less insulin. Also: Eat when you drink to buffer the alcohol’s effect.

If you take the drug metformin (Glucophage): The combination of metformin and alcohol can increase the risk for a serious condition called lactic acidosis.

  2. Janet Says:

I’m going to channel my inner Zen Lill with this statement. Let’s stop violence against everyone…including men

  3. Chuck Says:

Voter suppression backfired badly for conservatives in Florida and energized citizens who refused to allow their right to vote to be denied. Shout out to the patriots in Florida who endured unconscionable lines and long waits to vote.

  4. Alycedale Says:

The state of the female in America is as dismal as ever. And it will never change as long as white women control the vote. They will continue to follow lock-step behind white men because they for the most part are as dumb as the proverbial box of rocks.
    =============================
House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) announced who will chair all of the major House committees in the next Congress. And it turns out they all have something in common besides party affiliation: they’re all white men.

There isn’t a single woman or minority included in the mix of 19 House committee chairs announced Tuesday.
    =============================
Senator Kelly Ayotte (R-NH) is an example of a white woman who follows white men lock-step. The republican party’s aim is to get Obama to appoint Kerry as Secretary of State so they can run Scott Brown for his senate seat.

Hence, they set out to ruin this innocent woman’s reputation. White republican women know this, yet they go right along with those disgusting men.

Only when OTW women have a significant share of the electorate will we see a real change in the state of women in America.

    Alycedale

  5. John Says:

Alycedale, perhaps you haven’t taken a look at Obama’s Admin Staff lately? Mostly niggers and bitches.

  6. Lola Says:

Why should anybody be surprised that white men are only for white men. The Constitution that we are constantly told is so great is only about rights for white men.

  7. Evie Says:

    Alycedale, Whaaaaat???

    This can’t be true.
Those fools have “binders full of women!!”

Michelle, you ought to be ashamed of yourself for spreading lies against good Christians.

  8. Gamarra Says:

When is the rest of this nation, especially those of color and other minorities going to wake up and see the Republican Party for what they are?

An all white, male bastion of status quo guys who want to keep this nation as it has been for hundreds of years. This is not going to happen, no matter how hard they try.

The President won with less than 39 percent of white votes and yet he won overwhelingly. Also, many people don’t want to even mention this, but the God of the Universe is NOT the God of the WHITE men only.

He is the God of ALL people and his goal isTRUE LOVE. Not sexual, selfish, greedy love. But compassion for eveyone regardless of sexual gender, race, national origin or political agendas.

Just consider the unnatural phenomena occuring in and around te world. The very thing we disdain and curse is the very thing that we are going to have to go back to if we are going to survive as a nation. And we will because God has people who are truly Godly in Spirit and love leads them in every aspect of their lives.

  9. Λάχεσις Says:

Michelle, I check your blog 3 to 4 times a day because sometimes I can’t get on if I want to comment. Why is is down so much? And why is it that sometimes only Zen Lill can get in?

I used to think that it was Howie that had that single privilege, but it seems that even he can’t get in sometimes.

I like his comments(I am an avid UFO researcher) so I check often to see if he has said something. It would be nice to know why you lock out your blog at times.

  10. Dee Says:

President Obama is the most charismatic man in the world. He exhudes power and confidence. He is also humble. He has a great sense of humor. He has class, grace, and dignity.

The press cannot handle him. He will not let them. He is the boss and that is the bottom line. He has self respect in spite of certain disrespects. He knows that he will win in the end. He plays some things close to the vest.

Thank God I have a chance to witness this all with my own eyes. He also has an air about him of complete peace and calm. Whenever things start swirling around he just gets sooo calm. We got this and even more HE”s got this!

  11. Sandra Says:

When I heard that President Obama will host his former political rival Mitt Romney for a private lunch at the White House Thursday, their first meeting since the election.

My thought was: Bravo President Obama. Be sure to show Willard all the rooms in the White House so that he’ll never forget he won’t ever have the privilege of living there.

    Sandra

  12. Jade Says:

Sandra, I have to admit that’s a pretty classy move by President Obama but…Mitt you’re just visiting.

  13. Kii Says:

Mittens, Enjoy the white house air and the free meal. This is the closest that you will ever come to that seat.

Secret service, please check him well well. Make sure he is clean ……… and you must still pay your taxes

  14. Ruth,SM Says:

I can’t believe that the President is extending such a courtesy to that LSOS. My advice to President Obama is enough with the olive branches.

They haven’t worked since day one, and Republicans have not shown you the slightest bit of respect. Romney’s not an elected official and he has no influence whatsoever with the GOP now.

In fact the GOP has all thrown him under the bus since the election. And Romney’s been badmouthing you like the sore loser he is. It is not like your kindness will change anything.

    Really, what is the point?

    Ruth,SM

  15. Sonja Says:

Susan Collins(R-Maine) is another white woman who will help white men to demean a woman. I guess the fact that she is a black woman makes it okay for white women to get behind white men when they trash the hard earned reputation of a career State Department official.

    Sonja

  16. Cali Says:

He’s sitting down with the guy who accused him of buying the election?

Must be the white in him.

  17. Donna Says:

Obama is simply going to tell Mitt to tell his repub pals to get their shit together.

  18. General Info Says:

    Scared-to-Death Parents

When my daughter was a freshman in college, she decided to take skydiving lessons. Luckily for me, I didn’t find out about it until the lessons were over.

I didn’t have to spend nights worrying. My friends haven’t been so lucky. One friend’s daughter backpacked alone through China and Vietnam. Another friend’s son biked through seven countries after being treated for cancer.

We may not be able to control our kids, but there are a few things we can do to control our anxieties, even if nothing is going to eliminate those anxieties entirely, says Jane Adams, PhD, a social psychologist specializing in parent/adult child relationships and author of I’m Still Your Mother.

Start by asking your child questions about a few of the things that you fear could go wrong. The answers might reassure you that your child has grown into a sensible adult who has put thought into this plan.

Dr. Adams says my friend could have asked her backpacking daughter, “What will you do if you get sick?”
…“How will you know the dangerous areas to avoid?” If the child’s answers suggest a lack of sufficient planning, be aware that simply posing “what could go wrong?” questions subtly encourages kids to think things through in greater depth.

Parents also can think back to their own young adulthoods. Most of us tried things that our parents considered dangerous, yet we survived.

Finally, try to focus on the fact that having a child who is willing to take risks is better than having one who is afraid to live life. The risk takers of the world tend to be those who achieve greatness.

  19. Ym Says:

There’s a song I always liked. It went something like this: ……when the weather is fine, you got women, you got women on your mind.

Well, the weather must always be fine because I always have you on my mind.

As far a I’m concerned it is just GORGEOUS outside right now because your so much on my mind.

  20. Human Events Says:

    GOOD AFTERNOON TO EVERYONE!

Aside from the fiscal cliff talks, all eyes are pointing to 2016 and the several high profile races in the Senate where retirements will play a role in the outcomes. In West Virginia, Rep. Shelley Moore Capito has announced her candidacy for Sen. Jay Rockefeller’s seat. As Politico reports this morning, the list is full of Democrats and only a few Republicans. Will 2016 be the charm for the GOP to retake the Senate. We’ll find out.

We’ve got a lot of pieces on the ‘cliff’ below and a story on the failed sportsmen bill in the Senate. It was laden with tons of spending and Republicans held the line and defeated it.

    Talk to you all tomorrow,

    – Adam Tragone, Managing Editor

  21. Shibumi Says:

I hope the prezzz reads these post to romrom while they have lunch:)

Oh, to be a fly on the wall for that encounter.

  22. George, WN Says:

Michelle, The article fails to address perhaps the most serious of sociological issues related to women in the work force; is it good for society? Unfortunately, the answer is largely no.

Bitches should be at home taking care of babies. Probably the fault is the man if has failed to knock his bitch up. Of course it could be that law the liberals passed that stopped a husband from spanking that ass and taking some pussy.

    George, WN

  23. Ellen Says:

Michelle, I see the problem as men failing to learn to share parenting and domestic duties with women. They do not need to “become women” to do this but they do need to learn nurturing, intimacy, and relationship skills.

As a woman who grew up in a patriarchical home where the man viewed his role as breadwinner and family dominator, I have paid a very heavy price for men not learning these skills and developing this part of themselves. Please do not do this to future generations of children.

Women, please do not hoard parenting. Your child has room to learn, grow and love both parents. Please learn skills of egalitarian and shared parenting and negotiate this with your husband BEFORE you have children.

  24. Ola Says:

F**K you George,WN. One thing that puzzles me is why aren’t more people encouraged to not have children. If the children are such a burden on time and money, simply don’t have them.

God knows how nice it would have been if your parents had made that decision.

    Ola

  25. Charles Says:

i have been the only child of two working parents. i grew up at daycare centers. being forced to face reality so soon only did good to me.
i repeated the pattern with my ex wife. our only daughter grew up in daycare too. my daughter have problems like everybody else but in the issue of making her own money she is great. better than me.
a woman encarcerated in the home with a bunch of kids is the source of all evil
    .

  26. Kerry Says:

As a career counsellor working with professionally qualified clients I have noticed that many women in their twenties and thirties fear moving into senior management or partnership roles because of the ‘open-ended’ demands this may place on them.

In law and accountancy firms where chargeable time is a measure of success and long working hours the norm, there will need to be bigger shift in culture and working processes to make them more attractive places for women to progress their careers.

  27. Danielle Says:

I agree: a thought-provoking article, Michelle. For several years I’ve been arguing that the prospect of higher male unemployment than female will become a course of social unrest. I pray not!

  28. Lewis Says:

If its not the niggers and spics playing the race card, its the shrews playing the gender card.

My advice, if you don’t like it here in White man’s country, take your asses somewhere else.

  29. Alice Says:

The only reason the Senate is contemplating revising the filibuster is the result of mitch mcconnel’s abuse of the measure. He does not use it to benefit the voters of his state, or the nation.

He plays politics for politics sake. He will go down in history as the worst Minority Leader ever, having accomplished nothing. He is an obstructionist pure and simple. We Kentucky voters need to start working now to “Ditch Mitch !!!” for the sake of our country.

  30. Rose Says:

Florida crackers are at it again:

    http://www.alternet.org/news-amp-politics/gun-enthusiast-kills-17-year-old-playing-loud-music-lawyer-says-he-acted-very

  31. Bert Says:

Rose, I read your article, I would just like to say I’m not blaming the victim, just stating an opinion. If he had just turned his radio down, he’d still be alive.

If he hadn’t been in a place he knew trouble is likely, he’d still be alive.

I’m just saying black people know they are scary to white people, so they need to chill when we are around and armed.

  32. Rick Says:

Rose, incredible. This is exactly why the stand your ground laws are so asinine. The previous ‘duty to retreat’ prevented such altercations from escalating to life or death situations.

One must again ask who was behind these laws–oh yeah, it was the NRA lobby working through ALEC to foster more gun sales since guns are not a disposable commodity (they just don’t wear out and need to be replaced).

  33. Don Says:

Maybe the victim wasn’t even playing the loud music. He was just sitting in the car minding his own business and I think this was premeditated classified as murder.

  34. Tyler Says:

Bert, those “opinions” most certainly are blamin’ the fuckin’ victim(s).

  35. Zen Lill Says:

    Hi Misch : )

#12 from yesterday, so sorry, forgotten name after all these comments to catch up with…I’m with you, very tempting to show em’ how it’s done and run a humane factory.

The problem, as i see it, is if BD people make too much noise esp[ towards Walmart, WM will simply find a poorer group of people to exploit, I’ve seen footage of Disney doing it, I’m quite sure WM would do the same…the only way to stop the madness would be to start some humane and profitable factories. It can be done.

Janet, thanks for that comment, it’s much appreciated.

Ruth, SM, I agree…although I’ll get over it if it’s as Donna stated, to simply give him the downlow. Otherwise, time to stop being so nice…

GeorgeWN, and now we know why women just flock to you *smirk* and if theu do, clearly they are of the ‘dumber than a box of rocks’ variety.

Good looking men who smile while they make sexist/racist remarks fool no one, if a woman still gets naked with you it’s bc she thinks you’re pecker will do in a pinch ; ) truth.word.

Ellen, what you say is true, and if women would leave the space (rather than hoarding the parenting or stepping in always) men would learn what it takes and it could become a more natural thing to do to them, this is where I’ve seen women shoot themselves in the foot, always stepping in, always jumping up to get things, cook, etc…I say: stop.it.

    Luv, Zen Lill

  36. Aldopho Says:

Michael Dunn must still think it is a misdemeanor to kill a black person. He fired 8 to 9 times into the SUV and then went home without a concern.

  37. Zen Lill Says:

sorry, GeorgeWN, I meant your* pecker, but yes, you’re a pecker, too.
…you know how you can tell if it’s a bright woman who just wants to tame your shrew (and you’ll do in a pinch), she won’t return your calls, give you wrong number, takes your call and is distantly polite but can’t see you till next Thurs/Sept, there are a number of excuses. you heard it here.
    - ZL

  38. Mabel Says:

Tyler, You can not read and understand simple words , can you?

You are mixing two separate thoughts.
    The shooter was dead wrong.
    The victim is just dead.

If the victim had had done something different he might be alive. That is not wrong, that is survival in the world today.

  39. Holly Says:

Perfect advice Zen Lill. Why do women jump to do the stuff men expect women to do?

  40. Linda Says:

Maybe, the reason your lady left with that black guy is because you felt you had the right to rape her.

  41. Craig Says:

Toss my salad. The kid would be alive to day if they had backed out and left the confrontation.

You shoot your mouth off proclaiming your rights to some nuts and carry lead home in your ass.

That is wrong, but you have to take into account, there are thousands of guns on the street, being carried by white who are tired of taking shit off the smart mouth OTW.

  42. Rose Says:

Rick, you got that right, exactement

  43. Will Says:

Ready to jump, Trayvon was walking away………didn’t help.

  44. Jaime Says:

Yeah, Bert, blame the victim. You’re an idiot or racist.

  45. Bert Says:

    Untrue on the Trayvon thing.

Anyway what I said is true, it is better to not get shot , that to get shot.

So when you run up on a nut, it is better to keep your mouth shut and walk away than be dead. Just common sense.

Let the nut kill the next guy that comes along and you can read about him going to jail.

  46. Asami Says:

You don’t suppose that the fact that the victim was black had anything to do with it? We all know that black people like loud music and gun collectors are always right.

  47. Kelly Says:

Why is it all the phone companies ask for a 2 year activation to get a phone free or discounted. That is collusion if I have ever seen it.

What, it just miraculously happened that all the cell services suddenly decided that 2 years was the time required for a free or discounted phone?

It’s sick what theses rich sons of assholes can get away with.

    Kelly

  48. Paula Says:

When I read this I almost choked.
    ===============================

The U.S. Supreme Court upheld a lower court’s ruling that found the Illinois anti-eavesdropping law a violation of free speech, reports the Chicago Tribune. The law, which has had several challenges to it since the ACLU filed suit in 2010 to block its enforcement, made it a crime to record law enforcement carrying out their duties in the public sphere and was punishable by a maximum of 15 years in prison. Just prior to the NATO summit in May, a federal appeals court banned police from enforcing it. The Illinois House amended the law after the summit to allow for audio recordings of law enforcement officials.

The Court refused to hear the case, Anita Alvarez v. ACLU of Illinois, which allows the ruling from the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals in May to stand. In the original decision, Judge Diane Sykes wrote:

“The Illinois eavesdropping statue restricts a medium of expression commonly used for the preservation and communication of information and ideas, thus triggering First Amendment scrutiny” and that the “statute restricts far more speech than necessary to protect legitimate privacy interests.”

Harvey Grossman, Legal Director for the ACLU of Illinois said in a statement:

We are pleased that the Supreme Court has refused to take this appeal. Now, we can focus on the on-going proceedings in the federal district court. We now hope to obtain a permanent injunction in this case, so that the ACLU’s program of monitoring police activity in public can move forward in the future without any threat of prosecution…

While a final ruling in this case will only address the work of the ACLU of Illinois to monitor police activity, we believe that it will have a ripple effect throughout the entire state.

We are hopeful that we are moving closer to a day when no one in Illinois will risk prosecution when they audio record public officials performing their duties.”

  49. Robert, RT Says:

The single most important thing that enables anyone to report bad cops is the video recorder. Cops and their supporters have tried every legal maneuver they could to prevent the public from using it.

States like Illinois have made it a felony to record a police officer doing his job.

White men will do anything to cover up their crimes. Witness all the anti vote laws. Everyone knows that they are written to suppress or prevent the OTW vote.

But only MSNBC will say that. The rest of white America will accuse you of playing the race card if you say what it really is.

Finally the Supreme Court reached its limit on what they will allow these bigots to do.

The Robert’s court always does it’s best work when, it doesn’t hear cases.

  51. Irene Says:

The white police state is trying everything they can to turn this into a police state while accusing Obama of doing it.

The State of Indiana in a 3-2 decision, Justice Steven David writing for the court said if a police officer wants to enter a home for any reason or no reason at all, a homeowner cannot do anything to block the officer’s entry.

Justice Robert Rucker, a Gary native, and Justice Brent Dickson, a Hobart native, dissented from the ruling, saying the court’s decision runs afoul of the Fourth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

“In my view the majority sweeps with far too broad a brush by essentially telling Indiana citizens that government agents may now enter their homes illegally — that is, without the necessity of a warrant, consent or exigent circumstances,” Rucker said. “I disagree.”

Dickson said, “The wholesale abrogation of the historic right of a person to reasonably resist unlawful police entry into his dwelling is unwarranted and unnecessarily broad.”

This is the second major Indiana Supreme Court ruling this week involving police entry into a home.

On Tuesday, the court said police serving a warrant may enter a home without knocking if officers decide circumstances justify it. Prior to that ruling, police serving a warrant would have to obtain a judge’s permission to enter without knocking.

Yet, all we hear is how Obama is trying to take over the country. Now you know why the Right is so interested in States Rights. They figure to control your rights by taking them away state by state.

    Ym,

I like that song too. It’s been a long time since I heard it. It’s nice to know I am always on your mind because being on your dick is a rarity lately.

I’m sorry if I upset you this evening. I was only having a little fun. I didn’t mean to hurt you.

    I love you.
