Welcome 2013!

Good morning!
Happy New Year!!

Readers: I HOPE everyone had a fantastic time celebrating the coming of the new year!!
I’m not much into making new year resolutions, but I do look back at the year and reflect on what I have accomplished, what I could have done better, what I was glad I let go, and what I totally failed at. To me all the above are life lessons and a guide for the new year.
The biggies for me personally this year…well it is first and foremost my health, which for me shows up in the form of more “me time” – more time in nature, with friends, and getting into a new workout that I am excited about. I love what I do, and am blessed that it does not feel like “work”…it is more exciting than I could ever imagine so I have some big plans for additional growth.
Globally, I wish for planet to be well taken care of, that the greenery and oceans and animal life thrive, for our food to be abundant, fresh and natural, and for all…world citizens…to flourish and be safe, to treat each other equally, respectfully, kindly, lovingly…and for women to support each other and blossom into what we are meant to be…and take over this rock – yes it’s time for women to take the lead – I know, it sounds like Utopia – but hey, I think it’s best to reach for the stars and settle for something a tad bit less, but only if it is absolutely necessary :)
And lastly, the political junkie in me must say that I HOPE for Obama to be successful in his agenda/our agenda, the agenda that the majority of us voted for when we voted him in again – this year and the coming years and for the American people to not get lazy in 2014, as they did in 2010. (I just had to throw that bit in there as it is on my mind) We have a lot to accomplish in the coming years – change does not come easy and without sacrifice…but hey, nor does Utopia. :)
May all of you have much peace, love, laughter, good health, prosperity…and all the good you wish and HOPE for, for yourself and others in 2013.
And not to be forgotten, I HOPE that Hillary Clinton is recovering and feeling better.
Enjoy this first day of the new year! What will you be doing to make this new year different, better, whatever? Blog me.
Thanks again for being here with me daily. Lots of Love From Me to YOU! xoxo
I’m out of here…Peace Out.
Lastly, greed over a great story is surfacing from my “loyal”(?) readers. With all this back and forth about who owns what, that appears on my blog, let me reiterate that all material posted on my blog becomes the sole property of my blog. If you want to reserve any proprietary rights don’t post it to my blog. I will prominently display this caveat on my blog from now on to remind those who may have forgotten this notice.

How Limber Are You? Take Our Quiz!
Here’s an unusual New Year’s resolution that you probably have never made.
Become more flexible this year—literally!
For anyone who wants to have a fit, healthy body, building more endurance and strength are common goals, but you rarely hear someone say, “By the end of the year, I want to be able to touch my toes with the palms of my hands while standing—and do it smiling!”
But improving and/or maintaining flexibility is key to your health, because being loose and limber makes it easier to build strength and endurance…it makes everyday activities, such as tying your shoes or reaching behind the driver’s seat in a car, less painful…and it makes you less prone to injury.
And it just feels great.
So, how flexible are you?
Take our quick quiz to find out…and then, if you discover that you’re not exactly like Gumby, don’t worry—I’ll provide you with some easy tips from an expert that’ll make you flexible in no time.
YOUR QUICK FLEXIBILITY TEST
To get an idea of how limber you are (or aren’t), take this simple test created by Diana Zotos, a physical therapist and yoga instructor at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City.
Shoulder Stretch.
Standing, place your right forearm behind your waist and then raise your hand as far up as you comfortably can. Repeat this move with your left forearm. Can you…
a. Reach your shoulder blades with your fingertips?
b. Reach your middle back?
c. Reach your lower back?
Trunk Rotation. Sit up straight in a chair with your arms crossed lightly across your chest, hands touching opposite shoulders. Stare straight ahead. When you gently twist your upper body and head from side to side, can you…
a. Turn your torso to about the 3:00 position on your right side and 9:00 on your left?
b. Turn not quite as far—only to 2:00 and 10:00?
c. Turn only to 1:00 and 11:00, or not much further than your starting position?
Leg Reach.
Stand up straight with feet hip-distance apart. When you bend forward and simultaneously slide both of your hands as far as you can down your legs (with your right hand on your right leg and your left hand on your left leg), can you…
a. Reach below the knee?
b. Reach the knee?
c. Reach mid-thigh?
Toe Touch.
Sit on the floor with your back straight and your legs extended straight in front of you. When you bend over, can you…
a. Touch your toes?
b. Reach your ankles but no further?
c. Get only as far as your shins?
If you answered mostly As, good job—you’re lithe and limber. Just keep stretching a couple of times a week. If you fall into the B range, you’re getting a bit stiff and could benefit from stretching more often, three to five times a week. If you answered primarily Cs, watch out!
You may not be moving around as much as you should, and as a result, you’re losing a lot of flexibility—but it’s never too late to reclaim it! Doing the following stretches can help you open up your muscles and start to see improvement in your flexibility in as little as one to two weeks.
LIMBER UP!
Marla Altberg, a certified personal trainer and Pilates mat instructor in New York City, assured me that even if you have spent the holidays (or longer) on the couch, you can easily loosen up again by performing this 10- to 15-minute stretching routine…
ON YOUR BACK: To perform the following stretches, lie on your back with your knees bent, feet slightly apart and flat on the floor and arms by your sides with palms facing downward.
Triangle Stretch (For hamstrings, quads, inner thighs and hips):
1. Make a triangle by crossing your left foot over your right knee.
2. Grasp your right leg behind your thigh, and inhale as you bring it in toward your chest.
3. Take your left elbow and press it gently against your left knee.
4. Breathe naturally as you hold the stretch for 20 seconds.
5. Return to your starting position and repeat on the other side.
Leg Raise (For hamstrings, quads and back):
1. Leaving your left leg where it is, bring your right knee to your chest as you inhale, and then slowly raise your right foot straight up to the ceiling as you exhale.
2. Using both hands, grab hold of your right leg behind your thigh, and climb up your leg, hand over hand, as far as you can toward your foot.
3. Keeping your hands as close as possible to your right foot, pull your right leg toward you, keeping it as straight as possible while your knee moves toward your face, gently but carefully—never to the point of pain. At the same time, push the leg against your hands in the opposite direction. Hold this pose for a count of 10, if possible.
4. Walk your hands back down, and repeat on the other side.
“T” Stretch (For back and side abdominals):
1. Join your knees together and tilt them both over to the left side until they touch the floor (or come as close to the floor as possible).
2. Spread your arms out to your sides, so your body forms the letter “T,” and turn your head and torso to the right.
3. Hold for 20 seconds, breathing naturally and deeply into the stretch. Repeat on the opposite side.
ON YOUR TUMMY: To perform the next set of stretches, roll over onto your stomach.
Ab Contraction (For abs and back):
1. Make a pillow with your hands, rest your forehead on it and position your feet hip-width apart.
2. Inhale deeply, and then exhale as you draw your abdominal muscles in and up. Hold for 5 to 10 seconds and release. Pause for just a few seconds and then repeat twice.
3. Next, make the same muscle contraction but, as you do so, slightly raise your head (keeping your forehead glued to your hands) and chest off the floor. Hold for five seconds and release. Pause for just a few seconds and then repeat twice.
Fly Like Superman (For back, abs, butt and shoulders):
1. Still lying on your stomach, extend your arms above your head, shoulder-width apart, with the palms of your hands facing downward.
2. Inhale deeply. Exhaling, contract your abs and raise your right arm and left leg slightly off the floor simultaneously.
3. Hold for a count of 3 to 5 and then release. Repeat on the other side, and then do one more set.
Cat Stretch (For back and abs):
1. Get on your hands and knees.
2. Inhaling, pull your stomach in, tip your pelvis forward and arch your back like a cat. Hold for 3 to 5 seconds.
3. Exhaling, gradually relax back into your original position. Pause for just a few seconds and then repeat twice.
Note: If you have a health issue such as a bad back, joint problems or heart disease, consult your primary care provider before beginning any new exercise program.

Guam – A healthy baby boy born 7 seconds after midnight became the first baby born in 2013.
Obstetrician Dr. Tom Shieh delivered baby Kanato Azure Ikezumi at the Sagua Managu birthing center in Tamuning. Shieh says both parents are Japanese but are residents of Guam and run the Birkenstock Stores on island.
Baby Kanato is the first baby for both parents, Mom Yoshimi Ikezumi and Dad Yoshiyuki Ikezumi, says Shieh. Baby Kanato is also the first grandson for his mother’s side. Shieh notes that Baby Kanato’s grandmother was at the birthing center during delivery.

Looks like the republicans in the House are not going to accept the deal. They obviously feel that Obama’s balls are smaller still so they can squeeze him for more.
January 1st, 2013 at 12:19 pm
Poor Mr. Boehner got his feelin’s hurt — If O would just stop insultin’ them like that !!!!
January 1st, 2013 at 12:20 pm
The media really gets suckered by the politicians. Why did anyone think they would pass this when they couldn’t pass plan b, which was much better for them than this deal. It’s like that never happened.
January 1st, 2013 at 12:20 pm
This is our democracy at work. Let the R’s obstruct and find out in 2014 the consequences.
Our system is self correcting, but sometimes it takes more time than we can afford.
January 1st, 2013 at 12:21 pm
I predict this bill will fail. Mainly because Speaker Boehner is without a doubt horrible at his job and will be unable to get the votes…even with Democrats voting also.
And secondly because it is simply not in the bones of any Tea/Republican Party politician, especially in the House, to vote to raise taxes on the rich and the filthy rich. Under any circumstance.
Those are the real reasons, but of course the Tea/Republicans will point fingers and blame the other side of the aisle for all their shortcomings. In essence, the 112th Congress House being labeled the worst Congress in the history of the United States of America will remain intact.
January 1st, 2013 at 12:23 pm
Eric Cantor is the devil. He will lead the baggers to shaft the American people — again. It’s time for all citizens to rise up against the Tea Party.
January 1st, 2013 at 12:24 pm
OMG, Michelle and I agree on something. 2013 is starting out beyond weird. Although it’s obvious 1) She’s only doing it because it won’t affect her and 2) She knows that’s one thing that will never pass in a million years.
January 1st, 2013 at 12:25 pm
Perhaps Bachmann wants merely to rescind a pay raise that has Obama’s imprimatur on it so she can submit a similar measure with GOP blessings attached, perhaps her own? Nan Hayworth (soon to be the former representative of NY-18) tried this sort of tack in a slightly different way herself. It’s a shame Bachmann is still around to engage in such a gambit.
January 1st, 2013 at 12:26 pm
OMG. MSNBC just said that at 3:17 the Congress will not vote today, despite 89-8 Senate vote. Uggghhh.
January 2nd, 2013 at 8:28 am
If Obama doesn’t get a spine, the middle class will be lost. The republicans will be asking for more concessions when the debt ceiling comes up i in Feb.
January 2nd, 2013 at 8:44 am
If you anyone was in doubt that the republicans could care less about the 47%, yesterday’s act by Speaker John Boehner to to allow the current term of Congress to end without holding a vote on aid for victims of Superstorm Sandy, should clear that up.
The $50 billion dollar storm on the East coast has not been addressed for nine weeks.
The states that are from the south live off the largesse of the taxes of states like NY and NJ. Those red states are as hypocritical about taxes as they are about religion.
They received more that twice the money from the federal government as they give. My state NJ is one of those states that makes up the difference.
January 2nd, 2013 at 8:47 am
So, in the end, the Republicans gave WAY more than they got. Anyone who gripes and moans about the Republicans not willing to compromise – they went from no tax increase – to taxing above $1 million to taxing above $450K – that is a HUGE compromise to get the deal done…the Dems only budged by $200K.
The Republicans also did not get but pocket change in cuts…this bill is going to increase the deficit by $4 TRILLION!!!! Seriously? Special perks in this bill for NASCAR and Hollywood? REALLY?
Reid wanted to push sequester for 2 more years? What would that accomplish – just more debt and putting off a problem that will only be bigger…perhaps he is hoping he will not be around to have to deal with it by then…but it was a bonehead suggestion either way.
I hope that the Republicans refuse to budge on the debt ceiling and refuse to push back sequester any further unless SERIOUS cuts are made.
We have just increased the burden on high earners. It is now time for the rest of us to give something – SS, Medicare and Medicaid HAVE to be addressed. SS ran a deficit last year.
No one wants to be the bad guy and deal with the problem. Just do it already. We know it’s coming. Have the cojones to stand up and deal with the difficult issues.
January 2nd, 2013 at 8:48 am
Repubs had several ways out of this ultimate humiliation and embarrassment:
1. Allow Boehner cut that grand bargain with Obama that would have added spending cuts, chained CPI,and cuts in Medicare for the 800b revenue and 1t spending cuts (over the 2.5t cuts already from 2011 debt ceiling and budget bills).
2. At the very least pass the Boehner plan B.
Instead, they again showed the same brainless fanaticism that saw them believing their own delusions and polls through November.
Now they are still claiming a mandate based on their own gerrymandered maps even while losing the popular house vote. Know when to fold them you morons so you can at least have some credibility next time
January 2nd, 2013 at 8:51 am
Now we see the slide into insanity by the tea party regarding the debt ceiling. There will be some truly loopy and quoteworthy comments any minute.
But the back of the loony revolt has been broken with this vote.
“Thank god almighty America is free at last!” (I’m trying to instill that slight lilt that is seems particular to every ‘true believer’ and fanatic)
However let us not get carried away. The institutional madness that is the republican party has become entrenched by gerrymander and that will take at least a couple of cycles to work its way towards equity.
That this was the ‘last stand’ election in many ways becomes apparent when you look at American demographics. As this slide towards equity asserts itself this will conspire with demographic change to ensure the extinction of the current incarnation of the GOP within about twelve years.
But there will be a countervailing voice as that is the nature of a democracy but…where will the next counterbalancing political force come from? What sort of form will it take?
I do hope it is a more libertarian / rational sort of conservatism as that might make some sort of sense in this complex modern world. It also answers liberal humanist polemic with a rational and sometimes reactionary voice that is sometimes even popular.
But anyway, it was a real question: if not this GOP then what sort of conservative voice?
January 2nd, 2013 at 8:52 am
Sorry to disillusion you all, but there never was anything called a “fiscal cliff”!!! It was an illusion created by Obama and his cronies in the Democrat party and their complicit media that created it in order to get a bill passed that would allow:
1) Higher taxes for all
2) More spending on political pork, and
3) Divide the GOP among itself
And guess what…they succeeded!!!
Have you EVER seen ANY government that has taken in more money and NOT spend it??? No, neither have I, and now the Dems have the GOP right where they want them, and there is NOTHING that us Conservatives of Liberals can do to stop him!!!!
We ALL know that compassionate Conservatism has worked EVERYWHERE it has been tried, and the GOP has just bent over and made the way clear for a clear and strong Dem majority in the Congress in 2014!!!
There is not one thing that we can do now to stop them. And don’t anyone of you believe that for one second that the Dems will allow for ANY spending cuts, as SHOULD be done to save the country and its employers!!!
It’s just NOT going to happen. What comes next is for America’s creditors to call in our debt, and there you have it…HYPERINFLATION, just as Germany saw in the 1930′s.
And of course without the US dollar being backed by ANYTHING but thin air, the fed reserve printing more money every day in order to buy our own Treasury Bonds, we will continue to see the dollar devalued into extinction!!!
Ladies and gentleman, we are well on our way to a depression beyond ANYTHING you have EVER thought possible, and it is just around the corner.
You better buy ammo and food like there is no tomorrow because we are about to see America transformed into something unimaginable…the only thing that we can do is bend over and kiss the US of A goodbye!!!
This is the ONLY campaign promise that Obama has really kept, and now they will try to disarm us, because they fear us. Remember, a government that fears it’s people is a government to be feared, just like Hitler, Stallin, and so many more. Hang on, cause it’s gonna be a bumpy ride!!!
Good Luck & God bless!!!
January 2nd, 2013 at 8:56 am
Beverly#15, maybe this is the reason the John Boehner decided to abandon a vote on that bill.
Here is a few facts about the Sandy relief bill the Senate passed that this newspaper failed to mention- It includes 41 million dollars for military bases, including Guantanamo Bay.
It spends 56 million for charting the debris from last year’s Japanese tsunami. It includes over 5 billion to the Army Corps of Engineers, which is more than their annual budget.
It spends 100 million for the federal Head Start day care program. The bill includes 180 million dollars for new Amtrak rail lines ( not repair of rail lines….new lines).
The bill spends 20 million for a nationwide “Water Resources Priorities Study”. Plus the bill includes 4 million for the Kennedy Space Center. We can’t automatically assume that a bill is good just because it’s described as a disaster relief bill.
January 2nd, 2013 at 8:57 am
Why is the Federal Government paying $60 Billion?
How much money did Iowa, TN and other States get when ravaged by floods and hurricanes. One entire city was wiped off the map.
Are the Feds the insurers for everything? Do they pick and choose the States that get the money and those that get but a pittance?
Whatever happened to private insurance and help from the States?
The $60 Billion should be rejected and sliced in half at the very least.
January 2nd, 2013 at 9:18 am
Raue #19, You are practicing the kind of lies that fox puts out to dupe the following. Just utter any lie and follow it up with more. That is the standard republican party line.
I will ignore the first part of your ignorance claiming there was no “fiscal cliff.” I will comment on the rest. i.e.
——————————
“Have you EVER seen ANY government that has taken in more money and NOT spend it??? No, neither have I, and now the Dems have the GOP right where they want them, and there is NOTHING that us Conservatives of Liberals can do to stop him!!!! ”
++++++++++++++++++++++++
First the talk about balancing the budget by the republicans is totally hypocritical since their claim for Pay as you go comes new to this party.
When the republicans took over the house under bush they eliminated that requirement. That is why the budget is so out of whack. Bush and the republicans were able to spend without having to balance the budget.
———————
“We ALL know that compassionate Conservatism has worked EVERYWHERE it has been tried, and the GOP has just bent over and made the way clear for a clear and strong Dem majority in the Congress in 2014!!! ”
++++++++++++++++++++++++++
“compassionate Conservatism” that phrase would be an Oxymoron if it weren’t known as a flat out lie. The republicans are neither compassionate (racists, bigots, the “47%, etc”) conservative( this is the group that has out spent the dems by a margin of more than 3 to one every time they have had the White House or the majority of both Houses.)
So how could it work if it NEVER existed. As for the concept of compassion look at the Super Storm Sandy vote rejection.
January 2nd, 2013 at 9:24 am
David#20, Jeez either you are just another LSOS trying to get over or just another ignorant republican parroting the latest talking points.
Go back and read the bill sent to the House ALL that stuff was put in by the Senate and removed before it was submitted to the House.
So once again you creeps are lying to make a point because you don’t have anything else to offer.
January 2nd, 2013 at 9:26 am
Collins#21:
Listen up, you red state turnip. Which states do you think generate federal tax dollars? Stop being a parasite and let your host get back some of the blood you have sucked out of him for years so that he might at least let you continue to leech from him.
January 2nd, 2013 at 9:36 am
One last point: Obama basically showed that the non-Tea Party Republicans were so scared of being blamed for the economy that they voted to avoid the “cliff.”
There’s a much stronger argument that defaulting on the debt will do serious damage to the world economy, and so it sure looks like Obama should be able to demand a clean debt limit bill by threatening to veto anything else. And he’s sent several warnings already about it.
The only exception I’d expect is if he were able to negotiate more spending as part of more complex bill.
January 2nd, 2013 at 9:40 am
A day after the election, conservadems in congress were already floating the idea of ending the Bush tax cuts on income over $1 million. That would have generated far less revenue than the agreed upon $450,000.
Meanwhile, the administration managed to get a deal that, despite the revenue, includes no spending cuts whatsoever on discretionary programs or Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, even though Republicans had been demanding that any deal must include those cuts.
January 2nd, 2013 at 9:42 am
Obama plays his gullible supporters for the fools they are.
January 2nd, 2013 at 9:44 am
The rabid right wing nut bags who hate Obama no matter what he does- that hasn’t changed. Have a great 4 more years, guys.
But the whinging hysterics on the left, who are pulling out their hair and yelling “BETRAYAL” over this deal? GET SERIOUS. It’s called REALPOLITIK. It’s not a “cave” or an indication of “spinelessness” or a sign that O’s a “bad negotiator”.
He’s not a dictator, he was not issued a magic wand – and there are substantial blocs in 2 of the 3 branches of our government who are in an obstructionist thrall. This is what a deal with them looks like.
Mitch McConnell just voted for a hefty tax increase for millionaires, and to extend unemployment benefits, HELLO?
January 2nd, 2013 at 10:23 am
My take: Our nation’s wealthiest will grow fatter and sleeker and the rest of us will tighten our belts. The poor will be forced to do more with much less and the ultra wealthy will be encouraged to do much less with far more.
It is the death knell of the American empire. Slowly but surely the rich will take an ever greater share of the nation’s wealth while the poor and working class will send their children to ever more lacking schools that will not teach any manual arts so that a job can be had.
January 2nd, 2013 at 10:25 am
I’m in my used to be normal state of “less than satisfied” about a Congressional compromise. However, there have been so few of those, I’m really quite satisfied to be feeling this way. When both sides claim unhappiness with a compromise, but still pass it, it probably is exactly the way that Congress and the Executive branches are supposed to function.
No one got exactly what they wanted. No one really came all that close. At least it’s not just more of the same “refusing to allow a vote” that’s been so prevalent. It’s a step in the right direction, moving from moribund do-nothing to doing the job they were all elected to do.
January 2nd, 2013 at 10:26 am
The elephant in the room as the real problem is income inequality. Republicans might have to give up a new garage for their summer home or that third vacation to Cancun. The rest of America will be forsaking health care, food, and education.
January 2nd, 2013 at 10:27 am
For the first time in my life, I’m embarrassed to be a Republican.
January 2nd, 2013 at 10:29 am
I am constantly amazed with the ignorance of those who claim such allegiance to the republican party logic. Like everyone who voted for Mitt Romney “because of his great managerial skills” while simultaneously witnessing the most incompetently managed presidential campaign in US history.
January 2nd, 2013 at 10:30 am
Greg, I am happy to hear you say that but surprised it took so long.
January 2nd, 2013 at 10:30 am
Greg, What took you so long? Haven’t you been paying attention?
January 4th, 2013 at 12:40 pm
And don’t forget losing that huge pile of crap last year, Michelle. You must be feeling a lot lighter.
