‘Who Would You Choose?’ continues…

Posted by Michelle Moquin on November 26th, 2008

Good morning readers:  It seems the topic the day before hit a cord for some of you. I didn’t think that people had a hard time getting in, (because really I have no idea unless you speak up). I just thought that few felt inspired to comment. But I can see that I was wrong.

To me, it was a rather personal article, but I am delighted that it was thought provoking enough for you to try and write in to broach the subject again. Zen Lill and I had a convo about it the day I wrote it and I remember saying that I didn’t think that many would choose themselves as the one with all of the power, and I was curious to see if I was correct in my assumption. We’re about half and half – Interesting.

I read my article again and since we are still on the topic of ‘who would you chose?’ l wanted to clarify something that may have been misleading.  When I say, If someone’s going to have all of the control…If anyone is going to have all of the power, my answer would always be in any circumstance, ‘It is going to be me’, it means also that I would have the power to choose for someone else to be in control of a specific situation. I did not state that because I feel that I am all knowing – it did not come from ego – far from that.

I was not comparing myself to leaders of this world nor was I saying that I wanted to be president of the US. As I mentioned it was a personal article and quite broad in the scheme of it.  All of your answers were interesting to me and I’m pleased that although the day before was a lockout, you persevered.

Hey, I’ve got news too: Thanks for the heads up on Heparin.  Readers: Not sure if you read the health info or other such comments that are off topic and somehow get in. But as I mentioned before, I don’t believe in coincidences so if there are any of you with health issues I would pay attention. There is some good advice that gets in here, and quite possibly with you in mind…just a thought.

Hi Linda: Your professor sounds like a pretty amazing and inspiring man. How lucky you and your fellow students are to have a teacher in your lives that gets you thinking and challenges you. I miss that connection that one gets in school between students and their teachers.

I had to laugh about his comment about me. No one has ever called me a bullshit artist before. I find that quite amusing.  - I would love to see a comment from Joseph. So Joseph, if you are reading, how about chiming in sometime?

And how interesting that you would say that he would make a great wise ‘alien’. Why do you say ‘alien’ instead of ‘man’ or ‘human’? Anyway, I’m happy he ‘switched’ many of you.  I was initially for Hillary too but Obama’s got it going.  Hey, congrats on being a straight A student! The column will continue… :)

Hi Nawzad:  I know you have written in before yes? If it was you, I remember the last time you said, Sometimes I dream that you let Madaline loose and she destroyed all the evil men in my country.’  I cannot say that the thought has not crossed my mind. The more I hear and learn about women of the world, the more such thoughts enter.  How to weed out the good is easier said than done but it is possible…it has been done on other planets.  But I can see from your most recent comment that you are upset enough to not care about the weeding process.  And considering the life that you lead daily, (which no matter how hard I try I would never be able to comprehend) and now this recent action…I can understand your comment.

I had read about the acid throwing and it is horrible. I am really sorry that your sister was one of the victims.  I wish her well….and I wish that I could help, but right now all eyes are open. I can tell you this: You and the women of this world are continually on my mind. My situation is nothing compared to what you endure everyday and yet, at this moment there is not much that I can do to assist but write and enlighten when and if I can.

Hey George: Thanks for sharing your story. All I can say is I am happy that you said ‘enough is enough’ and you stuck to your gut and held onto your rights as a voter.

Rezar:  You should be ashamed of the way YOU conduct yourself.

Hey Jerold: AHahaha! Love the comment. Not sure we’re on the same wave but hey you have the right to say you want to control the world. Cheers!

Shawn: I think the readers have said it all…but I am curious of ‘respect’ and ‘relations’ is who you think it is.

Hi ZL: ooohh I know how much you like those artifacts :(- Times will change and I’m sure you will have the money to buy more later if you choose :)

Write on! Read on…

Hi Mischa, I meant what you said also when you picked yourself, it means, that while I rely on me, and I do have good judgment I think, I will ask and then listen and take others thoughts and feelings into consideration before I decided anything, and perhaps even put them in charge of the one task. I’m willing to share my power : )

Thanks for addressing Rezar, I forgot…Rezar, you know…if you weren’t so busy trying to rule women and no offense to your God, but I seriously doubt ALLAH would want you f**king men running roughshod over your women just for the hell of it. In whatever book God/Allah or any other deity says it’s best to keep women stupid, I say give that book the old Fahrenheit 451 (burn that bullshit bc it’s destroying humanity, look at the violence against women stats and excuse me but we’re the ones who reproduce you should be treating your women with reverence).

Get it straight, dude, and don’t hide behind your ‘religious beliefs’ we women don’t need to be ‘kept in line’ by you or any other male. If a man feels the need to physically protect me/another woman, well I think that’s just biology and fairly normal and comes form an emotional need to ensure safety, and it can be sweet in sentiment although it often goes unused in reality. So, get over yourself and tell your male friends also. And as Mischa stated, watch how you conduct yourself, your not the lord or monitor of Muslim women who write in here.

Everyone American have a happy Thanksgiving, if you’re not American I wish I were there, this is my least favorite holiday : ) I’m thankful everyday, no need to pig out to celebrate it. But that’s just me, others love it…

Beautiful Wood Floors for Much, Much Less

    Richard Kuritz

If you like the look of wood floors, there are many more options today — from money-saving imitation wood flooring to exotic woods, such as bamboo. Here are the best options now…

    IMITATION WOOD
Plastic laminate or vinyl “wood” floors look and feel very much like real wood but have unbeatable durability. They’re a smart choice if you’re finishing a basement and want a wood-like floor that won’t be ruined if a pipe bursts. Some home owners don’t consider these floors appropriate for the main living area of the home, since they don’t look 100% natural.
Prices can be as low as $2 per square foot, but it’s better to spend $3.50 to $6 for a quality brand, such as Pergo (800-337-3746) or Wilsonart (800-710-8846.* They are easy to install yourself, but follow instructions carefully. Floor prep is critical, since the vinyl will show most imperfections in the subfloor.
*Listed prices are available at low-cost flooring providers, such as lumber warehouses. Retail flooring stores might charge more. Add about $3 per square foot for professional installation and another $1.50 per square foot for finishing unfinished wood.
    ENGINEERED WOOD
Engineered wood flooring is made from multiple thin layers of wood glued together. This sturdy floor looks just as good as solid wood… is available in a wide range of wood types… and often is the cheapest way to buy an exotic hardwood floor.
Example: Flooring made of Merbau, a wood from southeastern Asia, can cost $5 to $7 per square foot. An engineered product consisting of a 3/16-inch layer of Merbau glued on top of layers of cheaper woods might cost $3 to $5 per square foot.
A quality engineered wood floor should come with a warranty of at least 20 years. Many are designed with “V grooves” or “microgrooves” between the planks. These make floors easier to assemble, and some people like the look, but dirt and dust can collect in the grooves, meaning you must vacuum grooved floors before you mop.
Drawback: Engineered wood can’t be sanded and recoated as many times as solid wood, but a skilled expert should be able to refinish an engineered floor once, assuming that the top layer is at least 1/8-inch thick. Avoid engineered flooring products with a surface layer thinner than 1/8 inch, and avoid low-quality engineered woods that use a particleboard laminate rather than plywood in any layer. They are very sensitive to moisture.
    SOLID WOOD
While red oak remains the most popular choice for its low price ($3 to $4 per square foot prefinished) and durability, there are dozens of other great solid-wood options. Prefinished floors are finished in the factory and should come with a warranty of 15 to 20 years. Among the newer choices…
Bamboo. Bamboo floors are a bit like engineered wood floors, since layers of bamboo must be glued together. The resulting surface is sturdy, available in a range of tints and distinctive in appearance — it has uniformly thin lines rather than a wood-grain pattern. Bamboo floors are environmentally friendly because bamboo trees regrow quickly. Price: $3 to $5 per square foot prefinished.
Brazilian cherry (also known as Jatoba). This durable and increasingly popular wood has a wonderful reddish brown tone and lots of grain. Price: $4 to $6 per square foot prefinished.
Brazilian walnut (also known as Ipe). Ipe has long been used for outdoor decks and truck beds and is only now coming into use as flooring. It’s an extremely durable, water-resistant South American wood with a rich brown color. Price: $4 to $7 per square foot unfinished. (Ipe is so new to the flooring market that it’s sometimes difficult to find prefinished.)
Maple. Maple is an affordable hardwood that wears well. Some consider its light-blond coloring a bit boring, but it can be stained or prefinished in many colors. Price: $4 to $6 per square foot prefinished.
Merbau. If you are looking for something distinctive, try this beautiful, durable, Asian red-brown wood. Price: $5 to $7 per square foot prefinished.
White pine. This light-colored softwood floor is susceptible to dents and dings, which contribute to a rustic look. Price: $2 to $3 per square foot prefinished.
Helpful: Not sure how durable a wood floor will be? Consult the Janka Hardness Scale, available on many flooring Web sites. The higher the number, the harder the wood.

Bottom Line/Personal interviewed Richard Kuritz, an independent home designer and builder in the San Bernardino region of California. He has been involved in home renovations and restoration since the 1970s.

  3. Gleia Says:

Okay it’s been confirmed by scientific data. Humans are just monkeys with better functioning thumbs. The Data, you ask?

On some of the ships that have been transporting some of their humans experiments have shown that humans minds function better when they are fed bananas prior to testing brain functions. It seems that human brains processing speeds function better on a high-carb/low-fat foods diet.

Using the tropical gardens on board, banana was chosen as the high-carb/low-fat. It increased their mental capacity by 38%. I like the idea that it has the potential of making my food smarter.

  4. General Info Says:

    Stripping your rights

The FDA has been asleep at the wheel when it comes to protecting us against unsafe drugs and medical devices, and the Supreme Court has just ruled against us having reasonable recourse if we fall victim to bad goods.

The High Court ruled that lawsuits brought by patients against medical companies need to be limited. Right now, this protection extends only to companies that make medical devices.

But, next up on the docket are the makers of prescription drugs.

It has become a dizzying display of smoke and mirrors—and you’re the one who caught in the middle. I’m going to try to walk you through it, but it’s circular logic at its worst. For the upcoming case that could determine whether or not drug makers will also be included in this liability protection, you have two old cronies pointing fingers at one another. The FDA says that they expect the drug companies to know their products and to label them accordingly with the appropriate warnings.

But the drug companies point back and say that the FDA provides a foundation of what should go on those drug labels—but also a cap on how much to put on there, as well. The FDA retorts that they don’t want the label warnings to cause an “overreaction,” and by placing a limit, they’re protecting against undue alarm.

When this is the type of stuff they’re arguing over, the only thing I know for sure is you will be hard-pressed to get a fair shake. And now, if you actually have a problem, the Supreme Court might take that shake away altogether.

The threat of litigation is the only thing that a patient has in his bag when it comes to trying to keep a company honest. And with this one form of recourse restricted, the drug companies will be even more out of control.

I just wrote to you in my last House Call about a company that was playing fast and loose with their research data. If the recent practices of the drug companies prove anything it’s that their goal is profit at any cost—even thousands of lives. We’re not talking about minor issues here—this is blatant fraud. But now they’ll have a fortress of protection from the highest court in the land.

And, incidentally, we already have a system to limit their liability—a jury system. If they aren’t at fault, the jury can rule in their favor—if the court doesn’t decide to strip us of that, too.

Well, the court can limit our recourse, but they can’t quiet or voices (at least not yet). Write to your senators and representatives and demand the same protection for the average Joe that they are doling out to the big corporations.

You are the silliest woman. Why would you tell your man that you are sleeping with his brother?

  6. Shelia Says:

I would pick Obama. He seems so calm in a crisis. I voted for McCain. I think I would have voted for Hillary. But honestly I’m not really sure. All my life I have been brainwashed to believe a man knows better. It is more difficult than you think to break old habits.

I voted for McCain because I was afraid that a black man would no be able to lead and protect us in a national emergency. Now I think that it is McCain that would have been a disaster for this country. I have PHD in economics. I have been a tenured professor at a prestigious university for 7 years now. One would think that I would have known that McCain was too dumb to lead us through our economic problems. Actually I knew this.

Yet, I was willing to accept his ineptitude because I believe that he could keep me safe from terrorists. Today’s events convinced me that I was wrong. If it happens here Obama will handle it as well if not better than McCain ever could. So would Hillary.

I needed to say that. Thank you Zen Lill for speaking up when us cowered women hide in the shadows of our men. Michelle you sound as if you have always been a bad as bitch. I mean that in a most envious way.

Zen Lill you are closer to my position. I feel that you were once like me smarter than your man, but walking in his shadow waiting for that event that would force you into the light never to return to the darkness.

Thanks for showing us timid shadow seekers the way to the light.

  7. Health Info Says:

    AVOID CANCER BY EATING AVOCADOS

I’ll take any excuse to eat an avocado, so I am always happy to see research identifying yet another virtue of this delicious fruit (and yes, it’s a fruit!). I just saw a new study reporting that plant chemicals in avocados are effective in killing certain cancer cells in the laboratory and also in preventing particular precancerous cells from developing into actual cancers.
For this study, Steven D’Ambrosio, PhD, professor at Ohio State University and his research team published a review of previous studies where a chemical extraction process was used to isolate six compounds in avocado meat, which were then injected into a petri dish containing human cells. These were either normal, precancerous or actively cancerous (in this case, oral cancer) in order to ascertain how the cells would react to the isolated avocado compounds.
One of the six extracts (they called it D003) was found to have an effect — it reduced the growth of some pre-cancerous and cancerous cells while also killing other ones outright. Based on these study results, Dr. D’Ambrosio speculates that “as part of a healthy diet, a cup of avocado may have some cancer-prevention effect.”
This adds to other research pointing to some cancer-fighting benefits of avocado as well. A 2005 study done at UCLA found that the growth of human prostate cancer cells was inhibited by 60% when exposed to avocado extracts. But keep one caveat in mind: Each of these studies used an extract from only a single type of avocado whereas there are actually hundreds of avocado varieties. The studies Dr. D’Ambrosio reviewed involved only Haas avocado extracts.
Why does this matter? Because, according to Jonny Bowden, author of The 150 Healthiest Foods on Earth, the nutritional value of an avocado varies by type and growing location. For example, 100 g of a California avocado has about 28% fewer calories, 35% less fat and about 10% fewer carbohydrates than a Florida avocado. He believes nutrient values may vary as well, although the California Avocado Commission says there is likely only a slight difference. In addition to potential for cancer prevention, avocados are a source of lutein, zeaxanthin, beta carotene and folate, among other nutrients. So it looks like avocados are worth incorporating into your diet for lots of reasons. Bring on the guacamole!
