GMO Poll Finds Huge Majority Say Foods Should Be Labeled

Gmo Poll

Americans are largely uncertain over whether genetically modified foods are safe for the environment or safe to eat, but the vast majority say that foods containing genetically modified ingredients should be labeled, according to a new HuffPost/YouGov poll.

According to the new survey, 82 percent of Americans think GMO foods should be labeled, while only 9 percent say they should not be labeled. The vast majority of respondents across demographic groups favored labeling, with little division either by political party or by how much respondents had heard about the development of genetically modified crops.

Although respondents were near unanimous in saying genetically modified foods should be labeled, many expressed uncertainty about the environmental or health consequences of growing and consuming them.

Twenty-one percent of respondents said they think GMO foods are safe to eat, while 35 percent said they’re dangerous to eat. But another 44 percent said they’re not sure. Likewise, 39 percent of respondents said they’re unsure of what impact growing GMO crops might have on the environment, although those who did have an opinion were more like to say such crops are bad for the environment. Overall, 35 percent said growing GMO crops is bad for the environment, 8 percent said it’s good for the environment, and 18 percent said it would have no impact.

The view that foods with genetically modified ingredients are safe to eat was more common among respondents with at least a college education, but the respondents’ level of education had little relationship to views on the environmental impact of growing GMO crops.

Survey respondents were divided over whether companies should be allowed to patent the crops they develop. Twenty-eight percent said companies should be able to patent their crops and 33 percent said they should not, while 39 percent said they were not sure.

Patent rights for companies that develop genetically modified crops have not been directly disputed, but a case currently before the U.S. Supreme Court is challenging those companies’ control over second-generation seeds produced by genetically modified crops. Currently, farmers can be prevented from purchasing GMO seeds under patent from sources other than the companies that developed them. They can also be barred from saving and using second-generation seeds produced by those crops.

The results of the new poll show that few Americans are paying close attention to news about GMO crops. Only 22 percent of respondents said they’d heard a lot about companies developing genetically modified crops, 48 percent said they had heard a little, and 25 percent said they’d heard nothing at all.

The HuffPost/YouGov poll was conducted Feb. 28-Mar. 1 among 1,000 U.S. adults. The poll used a sample selected from YouGov’s opt-in online panel to match the demographics and other characteristics of the adult U.S. population. Factors considered include age, race, gender, education, employment, income, marital status, number of children, voter registration, time and location of Internet access, interest in politics, religion and church attendance.

The Huffington Post has teamed up with YouGov to conduct daily opinion polls. You can learn more about this project and take part in YouGov’s nationally representative opinion polling.

*******

Readers: I voted for GMO labeling, like many of you,  and it didn’t pass. My question is: Who are the 9% that think it is okay to eat whatever someone wants to sell them without any checks.

Three quarters of the white race will never change. . Still a bunch of racists who can’t accept a black man as president. I really can’t stand you people.

  3. Milo Says:

One of the earliest lessons about race that you learn in America was that black represented evil and white represented good.

    That’s
why all pictures of Christ in churches and paintings of God in chapels
show bearded kind looking white men (even though Christ wasn’t from
europe and God…well, who knows if he even has skin).

That’s why on TV good cowboys wore white hats and bad ones wore black.

That’s why evil characters wore black outfits and good guys wore white clothing.

That’s why the devil was depicted as a red skinned man or a black character in this case.

That’s why in Christian circles WHITE is symbolic for purity, goodness, truth and BLACK is symbolic for evil and sin (white hearts…black hearts)

    My
guess is that the white producers of the show came from a similar religious
background and have grown up comfortable with the idea that black is evil and white is good.

    I can’t
imagine them casting for a major role without taking into consideration
that they were choosing a black man to represent Satan…and furthering a
stereotype that should have been a part of america’s ancient past

Hafa adai, We need to do something about the prisoner situation on Guam.
    ========================

HAGÅTÑA — A prisoner housed at the Department of Corrections costs more than $35,000 in taxpayer money per year. For the average population of 600 inmates and detainees at DOC facilities, the cost per inmate means $21.4 million a year — about $3 million to $4 million over its operational budget.

According to DOC spokesperson Lt. Antone Aguon, the department gets an appropriation of about $17 million a year. While it generally costs $22 million to run DOC, there are still unaccounted costs that trickle in, such as outside services, dental care, and pharmacy and healthcare costs.

“It’s about $25 million,” Aguon said, estimating DOC’s costs. “But we always owe vendors at the end of the year. We never get enough money.”

At the end of the year, Aguon said, DOC owes about $3 million to $4 million to its vendors, and its biggest bill is owed to Guam Memorial Hospital.

The average daily cost for a prisoner at DOC is “officially” $97.71. However, that figure is obsolete and hasn’t been updated to accommodate the rise in costs throughout the years.

“For the last 10 years or so…we’ve been spending $97.71 to care for these inmates on the average,” Aguon said. “But when I did the math, it’s actually more.”

Aguon estimated it now costs more than $115 a day to house an inmate. He explained the figure hasn’t been updated for about a decade because DOC does not have an administrative services officer to manage the department’s finances.

“Here’s the thing: It’s the same number we’ve been using for 10 years, but generally — officially — the number they’re still using is $97.71,” Aguon said. “We’re trying to update that number.”

As of March 16, the combined population of inmates and detainees situated in the Hagåtña Detention Facility and the Adult Correctional Facility in Mangilao was 609. There were 18 individuals off-island, which brings the total DOC count to 627.

Of that number, 402 (64 percent) were detainees awaiting trial, parole violators, or those held in contempt of court; while the remaining 225 (36 percent) were inmates serving their sentences.

To get a general sense of how many taxpayer dollars are being used to house these individuals, take the DOC population of about 627, multiplied by the purported $97.71, which comes out to $61,264.17 — daily. That’s more than $22 million in taxpayer dollars a year to keep over 600 individuals incarcerated.

The average cost per person incarcerated on Guam is $35,664.15 annually.

Aguon said the cost isn’t too far off the national average, however.

  6. Stevens Says:

Firstly, one must realize that Antonin Scalia is intellectually bankrupt. He believes the constitution is “dead, dead, dead”. Makes one wonder how recently he has actually read it.

For instance, the constitution authorizes the federal government to raise Army and Naval forces in the national defense. All well and good. There is, however, no mention of air forces, nor could they have been imagined by the founders when framing the Constitution in the 1780′s. With a “dead” constitutional interpretation, by the 10th amendment, defense in the air is left up to the individual states.

Only through a “living” constitutional interpretation, one that takes into account the intent of the framers within the context of the exigencies of the present could there be a national air force.

Scalia and his ilk can’t have it both ways. If he supports the existence of a national air force, his “dead” constitutional position is itself “dead.” If he continues to believe in a “dead” Constitution, he’s stupid and would leave the US virtually defenseless in the current age.

  7. Gregory Says:

I will repeat it again and again ad-infinitum: GOP and its conservative supporters like Scalia and Alito are for the following and more: transvaginal ultrasound, discrimination, inequality, corporate police state, &c.

  8. Henry Says:

Scalia is a fat scum ball, a disgrace to his profession.

  9. Virgil Says:

We have to present ID’s when we cash a check, go to the doctor’s office, go to the hospital etc. If we have to do this, why shouldn’t we have to present one when we vote? I guess Sotomayor is perfectly happy that so many people vote 5 or 6 times and many dead people rise from the grave to vote.

  10. Pro Women Says:

Fox News decided to air the name of the rape victim in the Steubenville’s case today. The poor girl is minor too! F’d Up News said it was a programming “error”. I don’t understand why this station is still allowed on the air. Canadians are obviously smarter than Americans in this regard.

  11. and there is more Says:

Two young girls were just arrested for making social media threats against the victim for making the accusations against the football players. This is a messed up world!

  12. Zen Lill Says:

    And there’s more,
did you hear about those morons at CNN, women reporters no less (what the hell is wring with these two??) were busy yakking about these 2 football players (hello, RAPISTS) lives are ruined bc now they have to be listed as sex offenders and their careers…well oh my…they should’ve thought of that before they thought they could just ruin HER ( the victim’s) life when she was frikkin’ unconscious and then spoil her life further by posting video and pictures, in my opinion, there 2 pieces of scum can rot in hell with all the other rapists, or lets just let them be jail bitches for a long time and see how they like having no say about who penetrates them and when…
The judge got it right and the 2 female reporters spoke that way, seriously, what the hell is wrong with these women…I don’t know why she was unconscious and I don’t really care if she was drunk as a skunk, you don’t touch women without their permission. Period. Why would anyone stand by these 2 fucks and/or give 2 shits about their careers?

  13. Health Info Says:

    Bitter Remedy Brings Sweet Relief
    by Dr. David Williams

I’ve been a big advocate of elderberry extract and herbal throat lozenges to treat colds and flu for decades now. But, if you’re caught without them or need additional support, there’s a little known herb from Asia that you should also be familiar with.

When I was in Thailand several years ago, the locals were using a very bitter-tasting native plant that grew along the roadsides to treat cold and flu symptoms. Around the Bangkok area it was called Fa thalaai. I later discovered that its botanical name was Andrographis paniculata. It seemed to work quite well, and, as a result, I continued to keep track of research efforts regarding the plant.

The Chinese have also used Andrographis paniculata for centuries. They use it as a supporting ingredient in medicines used for treating problems of the lungs and throat. In Thailand, cigarette manufacturers add the herb to their products for its soothing effect on the throat.

I found that the herb is also well known and widely used in India. In the 1919 Indian flu epidemic, the herb was one of the primary forms of treatment that finally brought the epidemic under control. In that country, the herb is called the King of Bitters. This name may have caught the eye of researchers in Sweden, where much of the current research is now being conducted.

“Swedish Bitters” have been a popular tonic in parts of Europe for over 400 years. In just the last year or so, this relatively “new” herb has quickly become one of their hottest-selling cold remedies. Its popularity has undoubtedly been fueled by modern research.

During the past few years, researchers have shown that Andrographis is effective, not only in treating the symptoms of colds and flu, but also in providing a non-toxic method of preventing these problems in the first place.

Based on various studies, the dosage of Andrographis has varied anywhere from 400 milligrams three times a day to between 1,000 and 2,000 milligrams three times a day. With a standardized product (containing 5 percent of the active ingredient andrographolide), a dosage of 400 milligrams given three times a day should be good for treating existing cold symptoms, and a dosage of 100 milligrams taken two times a day should be enough to help prevent colds.

Currently, there aren’t too many Andrographis products available in this country, and the ones that are available usually contain a combination of ingredients (which decreases the amount of Andrographis you get).

When the word finally gets out that this Asian herb is more effective than echinacea, I’m sure that this will change. In the meantime, if you have access to a Chinese pharmacy, they should be able to sell you the herb in either bulk or capsules. I also recommend Maria Treben’s Original Swedish Bitters or Metagenics Andrographis Plus.

Guam public schools facing an estimated $5 million increase in power and water costs.

BY THE ASSOCIATED PRESS MARCH 18, 2013

HAGATNA, Guam – The Guam public school system is facing an estimated $5 million increase in power and water costs.

According to the Pacific Daily News (http://is.gd/092aDZ ), Department of Education Superintendent Jon Fernandez says the school system faces some serious belt-tightening or will have to get more money.

Fernandez says the department budgeted $10.5 million for power, but now estimates new rates will push the school system $4.8 million over-budget.

He says the department is considering a range of possible measures to save money, including using less air conditioning, turning off lights and changing out light bulbs.

Fernandez says as a last resort, money could be requested from the Guam Department of Education’s 15 per cent reserve fund. He says the legislature also could be asked for money in a supplemental budget.

  16. Sonja Says:

Did anyone see the History channel’s “The Bible” series, I was shocked by how racist this show is. Jesus is portrayed with pale skin and reddish-blond hair — looking like he just stepped off a Viking ship at Lindesfarne ready to slaughter some Christian monks.

Satan was portrayed with dark skin coloring. Can these producers be any more blatantly racist and anti-Semitic?

What the fuck is up with India?
    ===========================

Officials in India suggested that a Swiss tourist and her husband are partially to blame for an alleged attack and gang rape in a remote wooded area in Madhya Pradesh last week. They said the couple did not inquire about the safety of the region.

On Friday, a Swiss woman and her husband pitched a tent in a forest in Madhya Pradesh while on a three-month cycling excursion, according to the Associated Press. Around 9:30 p.m. a group of men attacked the couple, beat up the husband, tied him to a tree, gang raped the wife and robbed the pair, police said.

During a press conference on Sunday, police spokesperson Avnesh Kumar Budholiya suggested the tourists are partially to blame for the assault because they chose to travel that area without speaking to local police, the Independent reports.

“No one stops there,” Budholiya said. “Why did they choose that place? They were in the wrong place at the wrong time. They would have passed a police station on the way to the area they camped. They should have stopped and asked about places to sleep.”

Another official also appeared to place blame on the victim and her husband.

“The rape of the Swiss national is unfortunate but foreign travelers should inform the police about their movement so they can be provided with adequate protection,” said Umashankar Gupta, the Home Minister of Madhya Pradesh, according to The Times. “They often don’t follow the state’s rules.”

Madhya Pradesh reportedly has one of the highest rates of crimes against women in the country, a fact the Swiss tourists were unaware of, according to the Times of India.
