Is There HOPE For The New Pope?

Posted by Michelle Moquin on March 14th, 2013

We can HOPE, but as well all know most people don’t change.

Good morning!

Well, it looks like the decision was made. The new Pope has been named and appointed. And it seems many of you are not that thrilled with the choice of Pope Francis. I can’t say that I know much about this Pope, but from what my trusted readers are posting, it doesn’t sound good. So, after some perusing it wasn’t difficult to find this write on the Huff Po. More of the same same of what all of you have been saying.

Here’s the write:

Pope Francis Against Gay Marriage, Gay Adoption

Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, a 76-year-old Argentinean, was chosen as the first Latin American pope on Wednesday. He will lead the world’s 1.2 billion Catholics asPope Francis. While his selection may be historic, it may also mean more of the same when it comes to gay rights in the Catholic Church.

Pope Francis is a conservative who is anti-gay marriage and anti-gay adoption. He has described same-sex marriage as the work of the devil and a “destructive attack on God’s plan.” He has also said that gay adoption is a form of discrimination against children.

In 2010, Francis championed against a bill for same-sex marriage and gay adoption, according to the National Catholic Register.

“[T]he Argentine people will face a situation whose outcome can seriously harm the family,” he wrote to the four monasteries in Argentina. “At stake is the identity and survival of the family: father, mother and children. At stake are the lives of many children who will be discriminated against in advance, and deprived of their human development given by a father and a mother and willed by God. At stake is the total rejection of God’s law engraved in our hearts.”

He went on to describe it as a “‘move’ of the Father of Lies who seeks to confuse and deceive the children of God” and asked for lawmakers to “not act in error.” In John 8:44, the Father of Lies is the devil.

Argentina approved same-sex marriage in 2010, making it the first Latin American country to legalize the union, the New York Times previously reported. The country is also progressive when it comes to contraception. President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner has promoted free contraception and artificial insemination, the Associated Press notes. In the past, Francis has clashed with the Argentinean government over his stance on these issues.

GLAAD President Herndon Graddick responded to the election of the new pope in a statement obtained by The Huffington Post.

For decades the Catholic hierarchy has been in need of desperate reform. In his life, Jesus condemned gays zero times. In Pope Benedict’s short time in the papacy, he made a priority of condemning gay people routinely. This, in spite of the fact, that the Catholic hierarchy had been in collusion to cover up the widespread abuse of children within its care. We hope this Pope will trade in his red shoes for a pair of sandals and spend a lot less time condemning and a lot more time foot-washing.

Graddick also specifically addressed Francis’ previous comments about gay adoption being a “discrimination against children.”

“The real discrimination against children is the pedophilia that has run rampant in the Catholic Church with little more than collusion from the Vatican,” he said.

Along with GLAAD, Stonewall Chief Executive Ben Summerskill responded to the new pope’s election, saying: ‘We hope Pope Francis shows more Christian love and charity to the world’s 420 million lesbian, gay and bisexual people than his predecessor.”

Despite the pope’s prior anti-gay sentiments, Francis’ official biographer, Sergio Rubin, defended him as a noble man.

“Is Bergoglio a progressive – a liberation theologist even? No,” he told the AP. “He’s no third-world priest. Does he criticize the International Monetary Fund, and neoliberalism? Yes. Does he spend a great deal of time in the slums? Yes.”

In 2001, he visited a hospice and washed the feet of AIDS patients, according to The National Catholic Register. That same year he spoke out in defense of those less fortunate, contrasting “poor people who are persecuted for demanding work, and rich people who are applauded for fleeing from justice.”

  1. Carolyn Says:

I’m sorry I’m off topic today but I love Dianne Feinstein. I want to share this from our local paper. I think she’s right, do Americans really need a bazooka? I mean, come on!

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, a 20-year veteran Democrat, clashed fiercely with Tea Party-backed newcomer Ted Cruz of Texas, when the freshman began lecturing the Californian about the Constitution during a debate over Feinstein’s assault weapons ban.

The ban passed the Senate Judiciary Committee on a party line vote. The clash was reminiscent of an exchange Feinstein had nearly two decades ago with the since disgraced Larry Craig, an Idaho Republican, who lectured the “gentle lady from California” on firearms during debate over Feinstein’s successful 1994 ban that expired in 2004. (Craig left the Senate after being charged with soliciting gay sex in a men’s room. Craig is now defending his use of campaign funds to pay for his criminal defense.)

No issue is more emotional for Feinstein. She became mayor of San Francisco as a result of the assassination of George Moscone, and was the first to discover supervisor Harvey Milk’s body, slipping her finger into the bullet hole as she sought a pulse. Feinstein said children at Sandy Hook elementary in Newtown, Conn., were “dismembered” by an assault weapon.

Cruz asked Feinstein whether she would “deem it consistent with the Bill of Rights” if Congress did the same thing to the First Amendment that she contemplates with the Second Amendment. Her assault weapons bill bans certain weapons, so Cruz asked whether Congress could ban certain books.

The Stanford-educated Feinstein replied, “I am not a sixth-grader,” and said her bill specifically exempts 2,271 weapons. “Is this not enough for the people of the United States?” she asked? “Do they need a bazooka?”

Undeterred, Cruz persisted with his rhetorical question. Texas GOP colleague John Cornyn attempted to help him out. But Judiciary Committee chairman Patrick Leahy at that point inserted himself in Feinstein’s defense, suggesting that Texas education boards banned books. In the meantime, Feinstein, with an assist from fellow Dems, came up with the rebuttal that the First Amendment indeed does not permit child pornography. Feinstein said all constitutional rights must meet certain tests.

Cruz took offense at the idea that Texans don’t read. Feinstein, who just won a civility award, was clearly offended by Cruz’s tone and method. Just two months into his term, Cruz seems to throw civility out the window. See the entire exchange here:

  2. Caroline Says:

This one is sort of on topic for today.

I think there no hope for the pope or any man that uses religion as a tool. Men are just plain evil.

Rebekah Havrilla, a former Army sergeant, told a Senate panel on Wednesday that she encountered a ‘broken’ military criminal justice system after she was raped by another service member while serving in Afghanistan.

When she sought counseling from an Army chaplain, ‘he told me that the rape was God’s will and that God was trying to get my attention so that I would go back to church,’ she said.

She later found photographs of the assault posted on a pornographic website.

Havrilla said she suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder and that her case was eventually closed after senior commanders decided not to pursue charges.

    —–

Men sure seem to hate women. They must hate themselves. What a fucked up world. Men are just pure evil.

  3. Mary Says:

I love Dianne Feinstein too. She is my Senator and she was my Mayor. Thanks for the read.

  4. Carlos Says:

Senator Feinstein was my Mayor and she is my representative in the Senate, but I watched her give deference to a LSOS white boy.

But that is the problem most OTWs have with white america. They give deference to each other when in the same circumstance they would castigate one of us.

For her to say she respected his rant rather than insisting on him answering whether under the 2nd Amendment a person was entitled to own a bazooka reminded me of that deference.

If SC state Rep Kris Crawford can admit that “It is good politics to oppose the black guy in the White House right now, especially for the Republican Party,” then, Sen. Feinstein could have shown us it was good policy to call a pontificating asshole and asshole.

  5. Carlos Says:

And for those of you who want to play the race card remember our Hero Scott Prouty, he is white and he did the right thing twice. Once when he dived into a lake to save a woman from drowning in her car and when he saved America by exposing that LSOS romney.

All, I’m saying is there are twice as many white boys as there are white people like Scott in that race. There is no denying that fact.

  6. Freddie Says:

Well, FINALLY, one of them said it aloud. Not just “the guy” in the White House, not just “the Democrat” in the White House, no; it’s “the BLACK GUY in the White House.” Every GOTP’er that has been insisting for years that race has nothing to do with it just got shoved under a great, big, ugly, racist bus.

I hope this goes as viral as viral can possibly get.

  7. Sandra Says:

Just surprised he did not use the n!gger word…

Democrats bad, women democrats worse, n!gger democrats worst. Too bad this will not get any coverage by the corporately owned media. This repuke just had his Mittens 47% moment and virtually nobody will ever know it.

  8. Allen Says:

So Crawford voted with the other idiots cause there’s a black guy in the White ouse, and how is this helpful to his constituents again?! @sshole!

Sociopaths run deep in the GoTP don’t they?

  9. Jim Says:

Nobody ever accused SC of turning out a lot of intelligent politicians, what with Lindsey Graham as their star, the bar is set for aggressive Limbo dancing.

  10. Gene Says:

let’s see how many of your hypothetical fine upstanding Republicans condemn his racist remark. Then, and only then, can we decide how close to the pip Carlo’s dart was.

  11. John Says:

I’m with Al on this one. You are a bunch of racist against white people. Most of the lefties on this blog are against the republican party.

I am a proud republican and I don’t like the white boy bullshit and lefties who don’t respect my right to be Pro Life, anti gay marriage and my right be for states to decide who can marry in within their borders.

  12. Brodie Says:

It goes beyond sad that members of my race will support a white person simply because he will oppose “the black guy in the White House.”

  13. Andy Says:

In all honesty, the hypocrisy exhibited here is more palatable to me. This doctor pointed out his own future hypocrisy in order to lessen any criticism of his later proposal.

He acknowledged that the bill will not likely clear the House and by not voting for it he helped end the debate on that bill. This way when he introduces a similar bill, which he says he will do, using wording that do not immediately sound like “Obamacare” even when the net result is the same, it might not meet with the same resistance as this current bill.

He realizes that Republican strategy is to refuse to be compromising. It seems that he intends to take the compromise and sell it as a responsible, conservative idea when the stink settles.

  14. Jennie Says:

what scumbags. Doing what’s best for their voters my behind.

  15. Jennie Says:

Rep. Kris Crawford, a Republican from Florence and also an emergency room doctor, supports the expansion but expects the Republican caucus to vote as a block against the Medicaid expansion.

“The politics are going to overwhelm the policy. It is good politics to oppose the black guy in the White House right now, especially for the Republican Party,” Crawford said.

As it turns out, “the politics” were so successful in “overwhelming the policy” that Crawford himself voted against the policy he said he supports.

Kris Crawford, a Florence emergency room doctor, says he thinks South Carolina should accept billions of federal dollars to help pay the health care costs for poor people — also known as Obamacare.

There are only two problems: Crawford is a Republican, and he is a member of the state House of Representatives. So on Tuesday, when it was time to vote on whether to accept the money, Crawford voted not to accept it.

For what it’s worth, Crawford still supports Medicaid expansion as part of “Obamacare,” and regrets the way his party is concerned more about the “political argument” than the “policy discussion.”

So why did he vote with his party? Crawford cited procedural concerns, and wants the issue to be considered outside the state budget process. He intends to propose separate legislation later this year.
    ————————————–

Another Conservative with deep, personal hypocritical convictions.

And a Doctor, you say? What a schmuck.

  16. Juan Says:

Ditto, Carlos, when Reverend White said “Gottdamn America,” it ran incessantly on every channel for weeks. An elected representative says “it is good politics to oppose the black guy in the White House,” and we barely hear a peep.

I don’t think OTWs using the term “white boy” is too much. At least if tags a specific behavior that is clearly apparent.

  17. Lorrie Says:

It is not the comments of one person that leads people to believe Republicans are the Party of Racists it is the comments of many people that lead people to think that way.

    Just a few examples:
    1. Why then at the 2012 CPAC convention did they have 2 members of 2 different white supremacist groups speak?

    2. Why have so many Elected Officials and prominent public figures use terms like monkey, tar baby, “skinny ghetto crackhead”, uppity and Montana’s U.S. District Chief Judge Richard Cebull admitted to sending a racially charged
    e-mail.

    3. Newt Gingrich told an audience that children in poor
neighborhoods have “no habits of working” nor getting paid for their endeavors “unless it’s illegal.”

“Really poor children in really poor neighborhoods have no habits of working and have nobody around them who
    works,”

    10. Race baiting comments and ads during Republican Primary and the 2012 Presidential Campaign.

During this time no Republican Elected Official denounced any of this behavior they remained silent. On the blogs no Republican posted comments denouncing this behavior. This is why the party is seen as racist it is not just one person it is many people.

  18. Tom Says:

Brodie, It really does and not only the racist remarks. Failure to help the needy in the state. Failure to help the health care providers in the state. It really does go beyond sad.

  19. George Says:

How dare ANYONE in this age deny the common good of his/her constituents for the race or color of ANYONE, let alone the President of the United States. This man works for the PEOPLE, not for his prejudice.

  20. Jock Says:

“Why is it that you Liberals ALWAYS play the race card?” -

  21. Riley Says:

What’s telling about this comment is that it’s said matter a factly. It’s not even racist, it’s cowardly.

I know people want to focus on the ‘black guy’ comment but that’s the least of the worry. It’s the fact that the GOP are still just running the platform of ‘not Obama’ regardless of whether or not they agree with the position. Which tells me they really have no position other than what their moneyed contributors want.

  22. Tina Says:

Jock, you know you jackasses see what this fool said and you yell you Liberals always want to play the race card.

What the @!$%# is it if its not about race?

The fool said that we are not going to work with this black guy who’s in the whitehouse because its not good Politics.

Now @!$%# who is playing the race card.you stupid jackass.

  23. Sue Says:

DUH!!! Republicans so hate our President because he is black that they oppose ANYTHING they see as coming from him, even when it would benefit them personally.

Republican legislators and voters will cut off their noses to spite their faces; if President Obama is for it, they are against it–whatever “it” is.

I have seen this attitude in my neighbors, and I have seen it in Congress. Until democrats are willing to end the 60%=a majority and to end the filibuster, we will continue to be ruled by a racist, hard-hearted, hypocritical party.

  24. Irish Says:

How do these people get elected. This racist coward also didn’t file tax returns from 2004 – 2007…

  25. Susan Says:

Can we make the vote in 2014 a message to these idiots. Canwe show them that we mean to take their careers away from them if they don’t stop voting against us because they are biggots.

The people of this country and of SOUTH CAROLINA NEED TO STAND UP AGAINST THESE DESPOTS AND VOTE THEM OUT OF OFFICE.

  26. Paula Says:

This is what Ive known for many years. we are a long way from burying the last racist. They have the right to vote, but their numbers have dwindled, as 2008 and 2012 has shown

  27. Elaine Says:

It just makes me sad to see such ignorance and hypocrisy from a “supposed” highly educated doctor. What became of his Hippocratic Oath to “first do no harm”?

It really doesn’t matter why he said it, it only matters that he finally “came out” as the absolute racist he is. That “black man in the White House” is truly one of the best things that has happened to the White House and our country ever!

He cares about what happens to those of us not wealthy enough afford proper medical care. There are many out here struggling, even those of us who do have the wherewithal to pay.

I wonder what will ultimately become of America as we have known it all our lives… Makes one wonder why they try so hard to turn our democracy into the same monarchy from which the first Americans fled…

  28. Sue Says:

Susan, Sadly, there are enough citizens out there who also hate President Obama because he is black that these people will continue to be elected. Some of these racists are my neighbors; their thinking is controlled by their racism.

I am white and I know when a member of our race is being a bigot. Those of us who also know and accuse those who complain of playing the race card are the worst of us.

  29. Kevin Says:

And the Right calls the left “sheeple”. This man knows in his heart how he should have voted, and yet didn’t have the guts to do the right thing. This is why I like government less and less every day.

  30. Lance Says:

Caroline#2, Yes, we males can be downright evil at times. But no all of us. I am not claiming to be a saint. But I do and will continue to support the right of women and OTWs to have their equal share of the pie.

I lose nothing by doing this, on the contrary, I gain by having others to contribute to this great country of ours.

  31. Brendan Says:

So you’re saying cardinal rules of the Catholic Church will bend for people that are going against God? Not a chance.

The 10 commandments haven’t changed, and murder is on there, so basically you’re saying the old church rules are behind times…..so murder and stealing must be alright to you?

Us catholics don’t want a child to be made fun of and cast out because his “parents” are two men or women. That’s just disgusting.

  32. Cate Says:

he Republican party has done more to damage the United States and our democracy than al Qaeda has. They have done more to destroy the American dream and our middle class than any foreign terrorist could hope to.

They obviously hold our voting rights and democracy in contempt and are trying to undermine both. Privatization is the Republican word for corporate

  33. Nancy Says:

Electing Republicans to run government is like hiring vegetarians to manage a steakhouse. They are opposed to the idea of “government of the people for the people”.

Their goal is privatize government and hand it over to their wealthy friends. If Snyder and the Republicans are NOT voted out, Michigan will be another Arizona. Eventually, even your State capital building will be sold off to private interests and leased back.

This won’t save any money, but it will enrich the private interests at taxpayer expense.Same with Michigan’s prisons or any other asset the state owns or controls, they will be privatized.

If you live in a state run by Republicans, read this Harper’s article on Arizona, this will be your eventual fate. Link: http://harpers.org/archive/201

  34. From the Desk of Dianne Feinstein Says:

    Fellow Democrat,

On December 14, 2012, a deranged killer wielding an assault weapon with high-capacity ammunition magazines shot his way into Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.

That horrific event shocked our nation, and the pictures of the victims brought tears to the eyes of millions of Americans.

The massacre in Newtown was, sadly, not an anomaly. From Aurora, Colorado, to Tucson, Arizona, to Blacksburg, Virginia, these mass shootings all too clearly demonstrate the need to regulate deadly assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines.

Help me regulate these dangerous weapons. Sign on as a citizen co-sponsor of the new Assault Weapons Ban of 2013.

Earlier this year, I introduced the Assault Weapons Ban of 2013 because I firmly believe that weapons designed for war have no place on our streets.

Debate on this critical bill started last Thursday in the Senate Judiciary Committee, and we passed it on to the full Senate this morning.

Since Newtown, there have been more incidents of assault weapon violence. We cannot wait idly by as this continues all over our country.

My bill will stop the sale, transfer, importation, and manufacture of military-style assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition feeding devices, while protecting the rights of law-abiding Americans to own weapons for sporting and safety purposes.

But as debate will begin soon in the full Senate, I need your support to show my colleagues that Americans stand behind stronger, commonsense gun regulation.

Take action now, and sign on as a citizen co-sponsor of the commonsense measures in this legislation that will reduce gun violence in our country.

The debate has already started, and that’s a testament to the power our voices can have. But your support is crucial right now. Together, we can stop these senseless acts of violence.

    Thank you for your support,

    Dianne Feinstein

Has anyone else considered that this Pope was elected from the “North Americas” because he’s Latino and the relationship to the fact the catholic church is grasping for relevancy? I asked you to consider:

Latinos will own the population of the United States in the near future (money, voting power) and are still quite religious as a society.

The world discriminates against darker skin – EVERY SOCIETY, black white brown yellow — the Church is run by old white men. They wouldn’t possibly have elected the Nigerian (Francis Arinze ) or the Ghanan (Peter Kodwo Appiah Turkson). They proposed them, to show their followers they are their image (subtle brainwashing ,not unlike the republican party, dangling a carrot that they don’t want to share, in my opinion).

And the fact that the old Pope had his own skeletons in the closet the church was scrambling to suppress while dealing with the massive failure of their PR campaign to battle the fallout from worldwide sexual allegations and lawsuits. If their current pope were outed, it was over as they knew it. (I’d like to hear Howie or Adam the time traveler or anyone who knows, tell us the truth about why the old guy resigned. I am aware but not clear about the “dirt” there. I’d say if I knew.)

The US is fractured religiously but So America has a lot of followers to pull from. The US economy will be driven by the new class of consumer slaves and consumers…Hispanics. In less than 30 years whites are in the minority. If the economy hadn’t tanked a few years back, I’d have even wagered on less than 25 years. An almost “generation” away. Some of your children; some of your grandchildren.

It’s control. Religion is control. I ask myself and anybody listening, do humans really need someone to tell them what is right or wrong? I have a internal moral compass. Doesn’t everyone? I feel better when I do something nice for someone. I feel bad when I hurt something or someone. It’s pretty simple.

The pope (the Poop?) coming from S. America was very cleverly orchestrated in subtle intentional manipulative ways.

The republican right, koch brothers, church, showed their political muscle because they could band together unlike democrats and unlike WOMEN (who never have/(will?) and control the vote. (BTW Koch brothers are buying the LA Times: investment or intentional control?)

The church wants their piece of the pie and control and certainly their coffers full of tithes, worldwide, not just in the US. I think they are looking to the Latino/Hispanic population as their key. Again,if the majority votes together, they control (again, are you listening women?)

Has anyone else considered this angle?

    ~Lily~

(BTW Obama hasn’t fulfilled the expectation many aliens had in his leadership. They might have glanced this way if a black pope were elected. But in my humble opinion, they know humans for greedy racist creatures and many dont give us a second glance [sad, at a time we need their help and cooperation as never before,])

If any of you religious people pray, THATs what you pray for .. HELP! From sources outside yourselves. Humans are on a fast train to destruction with no conductor.

Sen Portman (R) Mr GOP has changed his stance on gay marriage bc HIS son came out and now HE wants HIS son to have the same opportunities everyone else has…
I’m LOL-ing and shaking my head at the hypocrisy and then LOL-ing again, R’s are shameless in their ability to be all about themselves.
