Support Obama’s Gun Control Measures
Posted by Michelle Moquin on March 28th, 2013
Good morning!
From Maddow’s Blog:
Obama: ‘Shame on us’ if we forget Newtown
Visit NBCNews.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy
Shortly after the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary, it was fairly common to hear skepticism about President Obama’s willingness to follow through when it came to proposals to reduce gun violence. Sure, the argument went, Obama was saying the right things in the immediate aftermath of the tragedy, but would he stick with the issue?
At this point, I think the answer seems fairly plain. About 100 days after the Newtown shootings, the president hosted another event in the White House today, joined by parents and law-enforcement officials, demanding real reforms.
For those who can’t watch clips online, this portion struck me as especially significant:
“There’s absolutely no reason why we can’t get this done. But the reason we’re talking about it here today is because it’s not done until it’s done. And there are some powerful voices on the other side that are interested in running out the clock, or changing the subject, or drowning out the majority of the American people to prevent any of these reforms from happening at all. They’re doing everything they can to make all of our progress collapse under the weight of fear and frustration, their assumption is that people will just forget about it.
“I read an article in the news just the other day wondering ‘Has Washington Missed Its Opportunity?’ because as time goes on after Newtown, somehow people start moving on and forgetting. Let me tell you, the people here, they don’t forget. Grace’s Dad’s not forgetting. Hadiya’s Mom hasn’t forgotten. The notion that two months or three months after something as horrific as what happened in Newtown happens and we’ve moved onto other things? That’s not who we are. That’s not who we are.
“And I want to make sure every American is listening today. Less than 100 days ago, that happened. And the entire country was shocked. And the entire country pledged that we would do something about it and this time it would be different. Shame on us if we’ve forgotten. I haven’t forgotten those kids. Shame on us if we’ve forgotten.”
We don’t yet know whether Congress will even consider popular measures that enjoy overwhelming public support, but it appears the White House’s commitment has not changed.

Readers: I’m supporting Obama’s gun control measures. Are you with me? Blog me.
How is everyone doing? Sorry for the late post. I added a write and then I tried to post about an hour ago, but couldn’t get on and lost everything.
Howie: Nice to hear from you. I HOPE that things have gotten better for you and with your family member. What’s been going on with you otherwise? Happy Passover!
Zen Lill: Nicely stated and soo true.
Social Butterfly: I had no idea – thanks so much for posting. That is certainly something to celebrate. What have you been up to?
Nellie: Henry sounds like me over 20 years ago when oppression, slavery, and the killing of the American Indians was first brought to my attention in a very serious conversation. I didn’t understand the blame that was put on me at first but after hearing the logic, I got it. Perhaps Henry will too.
Sue: That is fantastic news.
India, Social Butterfly: I guess I missed this being posted the first time, and the second time. As you can see I was behind in my reading. Oh well…for those who didn’t click over, they got to see it. For those who did…they got to see it again. Certainly worth repeating. Great minds think alike. Thanks for being so with the times. :)
Ruth, SM: How are you? I haven’t been able to be in touch in awhile. I’d like to talk again. I’ll work on making that happen. How are your sweet girls, and the boys? How are you?
Kyle: I think you’re onto something (or maybe not according to GN who’s got experience in this area – sick fuck) - I thought the gag looked odd too. They should investigate this sick ad guy.
Sylvia: After reading all the comments and coming to yours, this came to mind:
I HOPE those that are celebrating Passover are enjoying the celebrations!
Peace & Love…
Lastly, greed over a great story is surfacing from my “loyal”(?) readers. With all this back and forth about who owns what, that appears on my blog, let me reiterate that all material posted on my blog becomes the sole property of my blog. If you want to reserve any proprietary rights don’t post it to my blog. I will prominently display this caveat on my blog from now on to remind those who may have forgotten this notice.

Things that make you go HMMMMM????
Birth control for the poor?…
By the 3rd generation, most rats regularly fed GMO soy were unable to have babies.
I’m sure your grandchildren (if you manage to get any that is) will be real grateful to those who ignored the warnings.

Anti-equality lawyers told the Supreme Court yesterday that LGBT people don’t need equality under the law. Why? Because we already have enough “political power.”
Try telling a woman who was fired because she came out that she has “political power.” Tell it to a high school student facing bullies in school every day. Tell it to a man who can’t visit his husband of 20 years in the hospital.
Right now, as the nation’s attention is on marriage, our job is clear: use this moment to educate Americans about the challenges facing gay and lesbian couples and use that understanding to create lasting change. We do that by building coalitions to win marriage in key states, by working with the media and in schools and boardrooms and churches, and by fighting relentlessly for equality in Washington, D.C. But all of that takes resources, Bill.
This movement is nothing without supporters like you, straight and LGBT alike, pitching in to bring about full equality.
Help turn these landmark Supreme Court hearings into the start of lasting change in this country. Seize this moment in history by joining HRC before the end of the month.
Our opponents have gone to great lengths to preserve second-class citizenship for same-sex couples – even concocting half-baked legal arguments to mask blatant bigotry. But no matter how much “political power” we may have, we don’t actually have equal treatment under the law. Just because we’ve won some battles doesn’t mean we’ve won the war.
So, as our opponents’ claims make headlines in newspapers and all over Fox News this week, we’re calling out the lies and making sure Americans see as many pro-equality messages in the media as possible.
But even if we win big at the Supreme Court in both the Prop. 8 and DOMA cases, there will still be work to do: hearts and minds to change, workplace protections to pursue, and state and local laws to enact.
That’s why we’re wasting no time. As our movement’s most pressing issues capture the nation’s attention, we are racing to bolster our on-the-ground work across the country. From working with teachers and schools to end bullying, to helping multinational corporations improve their employment practices, and from Congress to statehouses to city halls – we’re fighting on all fronts.
We have so much to be proud of, but so much left to do. And what happens now will set the stage for decades to come. Your first-time membership can make an enormous difference as the next chapter in this movement unfolds.
Join HRC before our fiscal year ends on March 31.
Thank you for your dedication and drive.
Sincerely,
Chad Griffin
President
P.S. Wondering why the equality symbol is red? This week we launched a Facebook and Twitter campaign in solidarity with those who stood outside the Supreme Court over the last two days, wearing red – and we’re keeping it going through the rest of the week to show as many people as possible how far and wide our movement has spread.

Howie, I watched Ferrari race through the streets of Jerusalem today and I thought about you. I truly believe that many of your post last year encouraged a lot of the who revealed the plots of their men to cause damage in Jerusalem.
Thanks for helping to make the streets of Jerusalem safer.

Healthy or Not? The Truth About 6 Popular Food Claims
Finally, there are answers about red wine, coffee, bottled water, salt and more.
With nutritional research, it’s often hard to know what you can believe. The latest study makes headlines, often when the research is far from definitive, then the opposite is asserted a few years later.
In general, claims that are supported by multiple high-quality studies—preferably, randomized trials involving thousands of participants—are more likely to be true than those derived from a single (and sometimes industry-funded) source.
What’s believable and what’s not…*
Claim #1:
Red wine is more healthful than other forms of alcohol.
Limited evidence. Twenty years ago, it was widely reported that red wine protected the saturated fat–loving French from heart disease. Red wine may have health benefits, but research as a whole suggests it’s no better than white wine, beer or other alcoholic beverages.
You may have heard about resveratrol, an antioxidant that’s present in red wine. It’s possible that resveratrol helps prevent heart disease, but this hasn’t been proven in long-term studies with humans. Researchers suspect that alcohol itself—not individual components in wine—is the protective factor.
All alcoholic beverages increase HDL, the protective (“good”) form of cholesterol. Alcohol also reduces clotting, a cause of heart attacks. People who drink moderately (no more than two daily drinks for men or one for women) generally have less heart disease than nondrinkers.
Claim #2:
Coffee is good for you.
Good evidence. Despite what you’ve heard, coffee doesn’t damage the heart or increase risk for cancer. In fact, moderate coffee drinkers are less likely to suffer from heart disease, diabetes, stroke and some cancers, such as colorectal and malignancies of the liver, than those who don’t drink it. In general, decaffeinated coffee offers the same health benefits.
Caution:
A cup of regular or decaf coffee without milk and/or sugar has only a few calories, but some of the “coffee beverages” at Starbucks and other restaurants can have 200 to 400 calories per serving. If you’re watching your weight, you might want to drink your coffee black.
Claim #3:
Bottled water is safer than tap water.
Limited evidence. You might appreciate the taste and convenience of bottled water, but it’s not necessarily more healthful than what comes from a tap in most areas of the US.
In fact, there’s a good chance that the bottled water you’re drinking did come from a tap.
American tap water is regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency. It undergoes frequent testing to ensure that it does not contain harmful levels of chemicals, bacteria or other contaminants.
Bottled water is regulated by the Food and Drug Administration, which has less stringent standards.
Surprisingly, bottled water is required to be tested only annually, while municipal tap water is sometimes tested several times a day. If you have old pipes in your home, you may want to ask your municipality to test the water for impurities.
Even though bottled-water companies often market their products with images of glaciers or mountain springs, it’s usually just tap water that’s been filtered to make the water taste or smell better.
However, there are some bottled waters that actually come from natural springs. Note: The chemical Bisphenol A (BPA) is not a potential health concern when drinking most brands of bottled water—most bottlers use safer plastics.
Claim #4:
Well-done meat increases cancer risk.
Good evidence. Meat (red, pork, poultry and, to a lesser extent, fish) that’s well-done and/or cooked at high temperatures—during grilling, panfrying and broiling, for example—produces heterocyclic amines (HCAs), chemical compounds that have been linked to a variety of cancers, including breast, prostate and stomach cancers.
The dangers are dose-related—the more well-done meat you eat, the higher your cancer risk. But even small servings of meat can increase the risk.
One study, for example, found that men who averaged as little as one-third of an ounce of well-done meat daily had a 42% increased risk for prostate cancer.
Lengthy cooking times and high-heat cooking methods produce the most HCAs.
Helpful:
Marinate meat in a mixture (containing olive oil, for example) of antioxidant herbs, such as rosemary, thyme and garlic, before cooking to reduce levels of HCAs. Also, precooking meat in the microwave shortens cooking time.
Claim #5:
Olive oil is superior to other oils.
Limited evidence. Olive oil, used in the Mediterranean diet, is high in monounsaturated fat. For years, researchers have linked this type of fat to cardiovascular benefits.
However, one large study, which compiled data from other studies, found that participants who replaced saturated fat in their diets with polyunsaturated fat (as found in safflower and corn oil, for example) were less likely to suffer heart attacks, but that wasn’t the case for those who consumed monounsaturated fat instead of saturated fat.
This doesn’t mean that olive oil isn’t a healthful choice. Both polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats lower LDL cholesterol and raise protective HDL cholesterol. Both types of fats (and oils) are beneficial—and they’re clearly superior to the saturated fat in meats and many processed foods.
Claim #6:
Sea salt is more healthful than other salts.
Limited evidence. Salt is salt. Both sea salt and table salt consist mainly of sodium and chloride. The only difference is that sea salt is produced by the evaporation of seawater, a process that leaves behind extra minerals, such as copper, magnesium and calcium.
Since the minerals are present only in trace amounts, there’s little nutritional advantage to using sea salt. The minerals do add flavor, which means that you might use less salt—helpful for lowering blood pressure.
Cutting back on table salt would have the same effect. Most table salt is iodized, but the typical American gets enough iodine from other food sources. So use sea salt if you prefer the taste, but it won’t improve your health.
*Conclusions regarding the nutritional claims in this article are based on a comprehensive review of the literature (including the quality of the actual studies) and what the preponderance of evidence has found.

Healthy or Not? The Truth About 6 Popular Food Claims
—————–
I suspect this entire article is as suspect as your claim #5. What “large study” are you referring to? I hope not the one BAPF by the food industry.
Those of you who wish to check the results of a real study, See http://www.bmj.com/content/346…
It conclusively shows that Olive oil is clearly superior to the bullshit you read above.

It is sad to say but my husband has already forgotten about Newtown. He is ranting and raving about next big gun he intends to purchase before Obama takes away his right to buy another big automatic weapon.
We have eight and by the way his penis is still as small as it was when I married him and he already had 3 guns then.

This viral video is right: We need to worry about wealth inequality
http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/wonkblog/wp/20…
This video is so spot on.
March 28th, 2013 at 2:29 pm
Based on the examples of U.S.S.R. and China (which never achieved socialism, just authoritarianism), not EVERYONE ends up at the bottom. Just 99+%. The distribution of wealth in the U.S., unfortunately, is starting to resemble (some say we are practically there) to that 99% v. 1% divide:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/wonkblog/wp/20…
Societies do not fare well, when the distributions are so extreme (see again U.S.S.R. and China). Thus, we should discuss the role of a truer form of democratic government in keeping us from the extremes. Currently, our country does not meet the criteria for a true democracy or even truly representative government.
Those with privilege have more access to policymakers than the overwhelming majority of the citizenry. Therefore, the rules were designed to benefit those who are already ahead.
The real question is: What are our priorities? How do we as a society move together based on those priorities? If we follow the money (and power), the current priorities seem to focus predominantly on a pretty homogeneous group of people — wealthy adults — and ignore pretty much everyone else, but most especially underprivileged children and elderly
March 28th, 2013 at 2:34 pm
Michelle, Why the left is so anti-gun; It really has little to do with the guns themselves or even saving lives. The root of their problem is they have replaced God with Government.
A gun owner shows self reliance and provides for their own personal safety. This is of course a blasphemy against their god. They have to train people to expect that government meets their needs and allowing guns runs contrary to their proposed indoctrination program.
March 28th, 2013 at 2:35 pm
This will never pass Congress. There are too many people against it. Even after all those children were slaughtered by guns. It is the craziest thing I have ever seen. But, it is what it is. The Congress might vote for universal background checks. It’s a start. Guess there will have to be more murders of innocent children. What can we do? It is sad.

How Not to Get Killed By a Tree
Damaged trees can pose risks even after storm clouds clear. Among the tree-related dangers lurking when you clean up your property after a storm…
Heavy broken branches might be dangling from trees. Scan tree canopies after storms for large broken branches being supported by other branches. These can be deadly if they fall while someone is standing below.
Make everyone in the household aware of any big hanging branches, and mark the area beneath them. If you can safely reach a hanging branch, tie a rope around it and use the rope to pull it down only when you’re in a safe spot.
Trees that are damaged but still standing could fall with little warning. If you see a line of exposed fresh wood on a tree after a storm—a crack in the bark that makes visible a thin line of the light-colored wood inside—it might mean that the tree has suffered a stress fracture.
If you see heaving in the soil around a tree’s roots, it might mean that the root system has been compromised. If the tree is large enough to pose a danger, consider calling in a certified arborist for an evaluation.
Tensioned wood can snap back powerfully when cut. When you cut a tree or large branch that’s being bent under weight, the stub can snap back with surprising force, injuring you or propelling your chain saw toward you.
To cut tensioned wood safely, make small nicks on the inside of the curve where the tree or branch is bent. These nicks allow the base of the tree or branch to straighten slowly, reducing the tension. Do an Internet search for the phrase “cutting a spring pole” to find videos showing this technique. Better yet: Have a professional remove tensioned wood to ensure your safety.
Chain saws are extremely dangerous when not used properly. Chain saws cause tens of thousands of injuries each year, many of them avoidable. Wear protective equipment including safety goggles, steel-tipped boots, gloves featuring high-grip palms and protective materials for the back of the hand, and pants or chaps specifically designed for chain saw use—these are made with saw-jamming material that will stop the chain almost instantly.
Read the maintenance section of your chain saw’s manual prior to use to confirm that it’s in good working order. Read the section on safe chain saw use as well.
Warning:
Wood splitters and wood chippers can be dangerous, too. Wear safety goggles. If you catch your mind drifting, take a break and return to this chore when you’re feeling sharper.

I am tired of people who write in and say they are thankful for some calamity that has happened to them. These constant stories about peoples thankfulness for their cancer or other trauma and what a gift it turns out to be – are just dishonest.
There is nothing wrong with grieving for a loss. Acceptance and making the best of things should be a goal for us all- and people that overcome are certainly an example to be followed but running around saying what a gift your cancer , your child’s extra chromosome etc are is just not believable.
I have had some obstacles to over come in my life- maybe some made me better or tougher – but if I had the chance would I avoid the grieve and trauma that led to that outcome. Absolutely!!!
I am not going to sit here and pretend for example that chronic pain has brought some beautiful fulfillment to my otherwise perfect life. No it has brought the knowledge that yes- I can still got on with my life- but it takes a little of the beauty out of a day all the same and I have a good life despite it not because of it.

Here again is the attitude by the white boy that he is better than any black man.
==============
The Constitutional Sheriffs and Peace Officers Association (CSPOA) has the support of 381 sheriffs and the cooperation of 15 state sheriff associations asserting they would not enforce federal or state gun laws they consider unconstitutional.
=========================
Those of you dying to proclaim – “race card,” please name a time this happened under the other 43.
Thought so.
March 29th, 2013 at 6:57 am
Alycedale, we are letting Obozo know that there is a segment of society that would resist any acts that are unconstitutional and that scares the hell out of them. And, like all dictatorships do, they are going after the guns first. What scares me is what they have planned if they do succeed in destroying the 2nd Amendment.
March 29th, 2013 at 7:03 am
NO ONE (outside of the military or maybe the SWAT team) needs guns that shoot multiple rounds per second. Better make sure that there deer is good and dead! Really? And this law is aimed at restricting gun permits to individuals who fail a background check – those who have a criminal history.
The last I checked, those who were convicted of many crimes lost their civil rights including that to vote. But heaven forbid we tell them they can’t have an AK47 on their nightstand.
March 29th, 2013 at 7:04 am
GREAT answer John! Few people realize that it was the armed public that scared the hell out of the Japanese military when they considered invading the U.S. in the early years of WW II.
Some additional lessons: Mexico, 500 years ago was conquered by the Spanish in one battle because of centralized control. In what became the U.S. the British and then the American military had to fight nearly every village in the “Manifest Destiny” quest and it took nearly 300 years.
When my guns are old, rusty museum pieces my grandkids will be using them the same way if their self defense and freedom to be secure in their persons are threatened like they are today. Thank you CSPOA! Poke a sharp stick in the eye of the “White House”!
March 29th, 2013 at 7:05 am
What they have planned would scare the heck out of Superman. I don’t know all of it but I know some of it. The plan they have (some Repubikans are in on it too), has many parts. Investigate, if you have time, UN Agenda 21 (some 350 pages), the UN Small Arms Treaty, the Department of Education “Common Core” (known as C Scope in TX), and the “sustainable development” programs in most communities.
When reading these documents, you must ask WHY they are pursuing each step. The HOW will come to you as you observe the loss of freedom by new laws and regulations that have the power of laws. You think you’re scared now; wait until you see what’s in the belly of this beast.

Like democrats.
