Compromise Set to Lower Student Loan Interest Rates

Compromise Set to Lower Student Loan Interest Rates

Student loan rates for undergraduates doubled on July 1 from 3.4 percent to 6.8 percent, threatening to further increase college costs for millions of already-strained students.

Fortunately, a bipartisan deal has emerged in the Senate that looks set to lower interest rates before students head back to campus.  Here are the main elements of this compromise:

  • It immediately and significantly lowers interest rates, giving students the certainty they need to make borrowing decisions.
  • It ties student loan interest rates to the market, allowing students to immediately take advantage of today’s low rates.
  • It caps overall rates to help protect students from interest rate increases in the years to come.
  • It sets the interest rate at a fixed rate for the entire life of the loan in contrast to a GOP proposal that would’ve allowed the rate to change every single year the loan remained outstanding.

You can find out more details about this plan and why it matters HERE.

This can all be a little confusing, but the immediate impact is pretty simple. Here’s what will happen as soon as this compromise becomes law:

BOTTOM LINE: 11 MILLION students will save an average of $1,500 as a result of the student loan compromise the Senate is going to vote on tomorrow. Young people need Congress to act right away to pass this deal.

    Anna of Guam, Hafa adai,

Your post was not accurate perhaps you should have included the exonerating details that would show the Church in a better light.
    ==========================
    The release from the Archdiocse:

Archdiocese Statement Regarding Father Paul Gofigan

Effective July 17, 2013 His Excellency Archbishop Anthony Sablan Apuron appointed Father Dan Bien, Parochial Administrator of Santa Barbara Church in Dededo.

Father Dan replaces Father Paul Gofigan as the Parochial Administrator. Father Paul is still a priest and at this time, a priest with the Archdiocese of Agana.

However, in light of specific assertions made by Father Paul in a letter he widely disseminated publicly July 20, the Archdiocese is compelled to respond to set the record straight. Here are the facts:

    I. INVESTIGATION & COMMUNICATION:

Father Paul stated in his letter he was asked to resign despite following the Archbishop’s directive. He wrote, “… this entire issue could have been cleared up if they had simply spoken with me, and done a basic investigation…”

The Archbishop DID in fact speak directly to Father Paul. He and the Vicar General, Msgr. David C. Quitugua, spoke to Father Paul in a meeting July 16 as he was informed of the decision.

There WAS an investigation on the matter. Father Paul was informed of this in that same meeting and in the letter he received July 16. He was given an opportunity to respond.

    II. SAFETY OF CHILDREN FOREMOST:

Father Paul was asked to resign because he disobeyed a directive from the Archbishop. In 2011, he was asked to terminate employment of an employee publically known to have a sex offense on his record.

Father Paul asserts in his letter that he did terminate the employee. However, our investigation has revealed that the person continued to have an active presence at the parish as a volunteer. The person had keys to the facilities and had an active role on church grounds in different ways.

It should be understood by everyone that the Church has the utmost compassion for all people, even those who have fallen and may have committed crimes in the past. We are all sinners; the Church is comprised of sinners. We welcome and do not bar anyone from our Masses.

It pains the Archbishop and the Church to have to take this action against a brother priest. Father Paul is and has long been a very good, faithful priest in the Church on Guam.

However, especially in light of the painful lessons the Church and all of society have had to endure in recent years – and still endures – we must abide by standards that will safeguard all children in our care. As Jesus teaches us, the youngest are among the must vulnerable among us and great care must be given to safeguard them.

A school full of children is in very close proximity to the parish. Confraternity of Christian Doctrine (CCD) students, Confirmation students and other youth groups are part of the parish.

As the Archbishop clearly stated in his letter and was communicated to Father Paul, this is a serious matter which prompted him to act decisively. It was done with much prayer, with a review of the facts and with the ultimate consideration being the safety of our children.

I am trying to get the letter that Paul Gofigan sent to his Parish.

    I agree. Etka the western world supports catholicism for two reasons;

    1. individually, men do it because it empowers them to feel superior to females.

    2. Women do it because it is supposed to provide a path to God in Heaven.
It’s a shame that none of these people ask what kind of god would condone one half of His/Her/children using the worship of Her/Him to suppress the other half.

And more importantly why would a god allow an admittedly flawed human being to be the sole conduit to a seat in Heaven.

I can’t understand intelligent human beings believing that another human being can “excommunicate” them thereby denying them access to the “body and blood” of Christ or a place in Heaven along side the god they have so dutifully worshipped for years.

  5. FDL Says:

URGENT: Tell Your Reps to Defund NSA Spying

This afternoon the House of Representatives is voting on an amendment to the defense authorization bill that would defund the NSA’s massive domestic spying programs.1

Call your representative NOW in support of the ‘Amash Amendment’ to defund the NSA’s dragnet surveillance programs.

It’s been a month since we learned about the NSA’s domestic spying program. A major bi-partisan effort to rein in the surveillance state is under way and passing this amendment would be an important step in doing just that.

Thank you in advance for all your help.

#10 Talibah, I once picked up and transported a woman that had a story very similar to yours, 23 and could never see her kids again bc her ‘husband’ of 50+ beat her and she had to run for her life, so sad and insane.
I agree, no oil should be purchased by the West until that stops, period. No excuse, religious or cultural.

…and thank you for reprinting my quote Tao0 (so sorry forgot sp) bc no god would ever condone that and if there was one, well start rethinking your beliefs about religion, people bc that would be one made up god (by men for their perverse usage).

#28 Krist, I should write a disclaimer, very sorry, the amount of reps I write is something to shoot for, do what you can but always shoot for the moon! You should feel some work load but not PAIN.

    Luv, Zen Lill
