Rape Culture At Work: Five Examples Of How Employers Turn Women Into Sex Objects

BY TARA CULP-RESSLER AND BRYCE COVERT ON AUGUST 22, 2013 AT 11:57 AM

It’s no secret that women face a disproportionate amount of discrimination in the workplace. One-third of women say they have been subject to some type of workplace discrimination at some point in their careers — which can range from being paid less for the same type of work, to being denied a promotion, to being scrutinized more carefully than their male colleagues.

But the issues that women encounter on the job can run deeper than being unfairly assumed to be less competent or less valuable than their male counterparts. In many cases, women are up against very specific assumptions about their sexuality, their role as “objects” intended to be attractive to men, and their responsibility to prevent men from desiring them.

That attitude toward women’s bodies becomes entrenched at an early age, as girls are told what type of clothing is or isn’t appropriate to wear at school so they don’t “distract” the male students. And it carries over into the workplace, too, as adult women repeatedly receive the message that they are responsible for both obscuring and leveraging their sexuality for men’s purposes. Here are just five recent examples:

A New Jersey judge ruled that casino waitresses can be fired for gaining weight.

Twenty two former cocktail servers sued a popular casino in Atlantic City over a policy that forbids waitresses from gaining more than seven percent of their original body weight. The women were subject to regular weigh-ins, and the policy meant that a 130-pound woman was not allowed to gain more than 9.1 pounds. They alleged it was weight discrimination — but an Atlantic County Superior Court Judge disagreed. In July, the judge ruled that casino waitresses are essentially “sex objects,” and it’s okay to fire them for gaining weight because they are no longer fulfilling their contractual obligations.

A widely-used employee training manual tells women how to make sure they don’t lead men on.

Earlier this week, Jezebel reported that a popular manager training guide — used as companies like Google, Groupon, and Modcloth — essentially tells women that they’re responsible for preventing advances from their male co-workers. The manual tells women who are “touchy-feely or flirtatious by nature” to “dial it back,” suggests women socialize in groups, and advises women to avoid “revealing clothing” or “ending statements with an upward inflection.”

Women at Merrill Lynch have been instructed to seduce their way to the top.

Other employee trainings have similarly gone off the rails when it comes to guidance on women’s behavior in the workplace. Female employees at Merrill Lynch allege they were made to read a book called “Seducing the Boys Club: Uncensored Tactics From a Woman at the Top” and tomake use of its advice to get ahead. To get men to do their work, the book suggested “play[ing] on their masculine pride and natural instincts to protect the weaker sex.” To diffuse tense situations, it pointed out that men “puff up” at being told, “Wow, you look great. Been working out?” The women also allege that they were pressured to attend female-only events on “dressing for success” and were told to be more “perky” and “bubbly.”

The Iowa Supreme Court decided it’s okay to fire attractive women if they pose a risk to men’s marriages.

James Knight, a dentist in Iowa, didn’t fire his female assistant Melissa Nelson after 10 years of working for him because of performance reasons. Instead, Nelson alleges that Knight’s wife told him to do it because “she was a big threat to our marriage” given that he was sexually attracted to her. Yet in July, the all-male Iowa Supreme Court stood by an earlier decision that she wasn’t improperly fired because it wasn’t gender discrimination. Instead, her firing was found permissible because of the facts surrounding her relationship with Knight, such as several comments he made about her clothing and the fact that they texted each other after work hours.

Two hotel employees were fired after they complained about being photoshopped onto bikini-clad bodies.

Two sisters, Martha and Lorena Reyes, say they were fired from the Hyatt Hotel in Santa Clara, CA after they complained about photoshopped images of them. In the photos, the women’s heads were photoshopped onto the bodies of women wearing bikinis. Lorena told Jezebel that they were “extremely humiliating and shameful for me” and also said she has never worn a bikini, even at home. While the company says it fired them two days after they complained about the images because they took overly long breaks, the sisters feel it was related to the incident. The Reyes sisters have filed a retaliation charge with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

***
Just like when it comes to school dress codes, the issues at play in the above scenarios are ultimately a manifestation of rape culture. Many Americans think of “rape culture” specifically in the context ofincidences of sexual assault, but it’s actually a pervasive societal attitude about women’s sexuality that runs much deeper and influences a much broader range of interactions. When women in the workplace are sexualized in these ways, they’re receiving the message that their bodies have everything to do with men’s reactions to them and nothing to do with their own autonomy or consent. This approach to gender roles assumes that men can’t control themselves around women, and it’s women’s responsibility to figure out how to handle that. And ultimately, this culture contributes to high rates of sexual harassment in the workplace: One in four women report having experienced such abuse.

But once women and men internalize those messages about women’s bodies, it’s not hard to see why many of them may assume that women who are subject to that sexual harassment — or other types of sexual violence — probably did something to “deserve it.”

It seems to me people blur their professional and personal boundaries a lot.

And the ‘blaming’ goes to women (we’re such distractions, oh please), and it is still a white man’s world ~for now~ don’t stay comfortable though white dudes, it’s a changin’ and women will remain women in all the best ways though we will become vigilant about dealing with all of you penis bearing peeps (I can hope, can’t I?) I don’t want women toughening up and ‘acting like men’ just to please you and your needs.

Most men have been doing that ‘blurring the lines’ thing for years leading to this kind of ‘pseudo-accepted’ behavior in the workplace, they like to have their cake and eat it, too, and while that’s just dandy for a man they are screwing around with women – who have decidedly different viewpoints, sensibilities and values in this regard.

Take the dentist, for instance, they were having a texting (i.e. emotional) relationship that wife didn’t dig…I won’t give personal commentary on that, they can both claim innocence and that’s fine, just know this:

    * most men in a utopian man world would love a primary relationship and an ‘emo’ or 2 on the side for that text/friend ‘contact and connect’ aspect and if it turns sexual – even better – *and this is whether or not they have a good connect with wife* BUT is esp true if wife and he are in ‘friends’ mode which can happen in a long relationship, and they both still dig the companionship but one or both still crave more sex-or variety of partners/more emtional engagement/adventure/the chase/secret agent life/the needs of people are too complex to list here, and they don’t want to separate so the men (& some women actually) live a double life from time to time AND they’d also luv 1-2 ‘just sexual contact’ types on the side as well preferably ongoing bc one nighters suck, I’m not saying any of this is ‘correct’ way to handle themselves, just saying it’s what’s happening in the minds/hearts/groins of males everywhere whether they act on it or not, you can accept that or reject that, I think it’s much easier to keep that in mind (and act accordingly, if you are so inclined, bc many women are finding themselves in a similar ‘need more’ emo/sex predicament ; )

soooo…as I told a friend who overstepped a wife’s boundary in much this manner recently, you can claim that you thought you were just friends but you showed me the texts and you both overstepped personal and esp professional boundaries and now you want his wife to be friends with either of you?? Why? Clearly the ‘professors’ wife will likely forgive him but she won’t forgive you, for many reasons, you knew he was married, etc, etc… and of course she prefers that they not have contact, that would seem a rational way to keep her marriage on track (until he enters man utopian fantasy world again : ) and she can either accept/reject him again…(and my friend is ‘hurt’ – hmmm, why? what was she expecting? I think she misses the ‘emo’ interaction with him and while understandable it clearly wasn’t an agreement the prof and his lady agreed on)

Words are powerful, watch what you say to anyone of any gender really…your intent and your words would be more congruent that way, and upholding your own integrity in any situation is important. If you want to be taken professionally only, then act that way.

Unfortunately, men aren’t going to do that, so behave how you want to though watch your OWN back (and check your emotions if a male workmate wants to be texting ‘pals’)

As far as being photoshopped into bikinis, fuck, some men are just sexual dawgs and you end up on the short end bc of their pranks, wtf, get an atty and set a new precedent for all women, it’s unfortunate that it’s that way, but again, change is in the air it’s just a matter of time, boyz…just a small matter in the grander scheme…and you may or may not like the changes but you caused the effect and you will receive it, hopefully we can be humane about it.

BTW, I say this bc I want women to stop getting in the crosshairs inadvertently, if you CHOOSE to be there, cool, just know man nature and it ain’t always (ever?) virtous. This is not a ‘boys will be boys’ chat either, though you can accept or reject that they make rules women often don’t like, best bet is to make some rules of your own and never waver from them for any male.

Off the soapbox now, and I’m sure there’s going to be someone who thinks I wrote this in support of men, nope, read again. Just the facts, ma’am, just the facts…

    Luv, Zen Lill

So let me get this straight, the Dems want us to have a FBI background check to exercise our second amendment right to bear arms but don’t believe that citizens ought to have to even identify themselves to vote?

No crime has been identified showing wide spread voter fraud. Last I checked crazies have used guns to slaughter innocent men, women and children with assault weapons and magazines that hold more than 30 rounds.

My true concern is with the fact that there are so many who can’t see this difference. The first time someone kills a bunch of people with a vote, I will be the asking the FBI to do a background check on voters.

I have a few arms but I want everyone who gets one to have to submit to a national background check. I suspect you will too when the terrorists figure out they don’t have to bring any arms here to harm us. They can just buy them at any gun show in this nation.

That NJ idiot just signed into law the right for anyone to own a rifle capable of shooting down a commercial aircraft. I guess you can’t wait to vote for him as President, that would be unless some terrorist comes here buys one, and starts shooting down our passenger jets as they enter or depart our airports.

Breast Cancer Rehab: Vital Therapies Survivors Need But Don’t Get

For many breast cancer patients, the challenges don’t end on the last day of treatment. They continue to suffer from the aftereffects of the disease and its treatments—pain, fatigue, physical limitations, foggy thinking, fear. In fact, according to a recent study in the journal Cancer, almost two-thirds of breast cancer patients report cancer complications that linger for many years.

It doesn’t have to be that way…but sadly, it often is. “After treatment is over, many patients are sent away by their oncologists, having been told only to exercise and come back for a checkup every three to six months. That’s not good enough!” said Julie K. Silver, MD, an associate professor of physical medicine and rehabilitation at Harvard Medical School, author of After Cancer Treatment: Heal Faster, Better, Stronger and a breast cancer survivor herself.

What could help breast cancer survivors recover more fully? Cancer rehab, a program of individualized, targeted, multidisciplinary therapies. “Cancer rehab is far more than standard follow-up care. It’s a way of dealing with and minimizing the long-term impairments that breast cancer and its treatment can cause,” said Dr. Silver.

You might think that breast cancer patients would be getting rehab services as a matter of course, but that’s not the case. Dr. Silver cited one recent study showing that, while 90% of breast cancer survivors need rehabilitative care, fewer than 30% are getting it. The reason is that many patients—and many doctors—are unaware of this vital resource.

    LINGERING PROBLEMS
Breast cancer survivors typically suffer some if not all of the following long-term difficulties…
Pain in the chest wall where muscles and other tissue were cut for a mastectomy or lumpectomy.
Frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis), a condition characterized by stiffness and pain in the shoulder joint.

Lymphedema—swelling, discomfort and/or loss of function in the arm closest to the affected breast, which result from lymph node removal and scarring that allow fluid to build up.
Neuropathy, a nerve problem that causes pain and numbness, typically in the hands and/or feet.
“Chemo brain,” the well-documented phenomenon of feeling less mentally sharp than before chemotherapy.

Generalized weakness, which makes it difficult to lift things or carry out other normal tasks.
Excessive fatigue that interferes with the ability to exercise, work, socialize or enjoy life.
Fear, anxiety or depression brought on by the battle with breast cancer and continuing concerns about a possible recurrence.

Dr. Silver said that many patients recovering from breast cancer (and other cancers) come to her after enduring years of discomfort…and they blame themselves, saying, “I should have asked my doctor for a rehab referral.”

But, she said, “I tell those patients that they shouldn’t have to ask—rehab should be a routine part of treatment for all cancer patients, regardless of what type of cancer they had.”

    Good news:
Starting in 2015, it will be routine—because the American College of Surgeons’ Commission on Cancer (CoC) has mandated that all hospitals provide after-care plans for cancer patients. If an institution fails to have such a plan in place, it will not be accredited by the CoC.

If you are currently being treated for breast cancer or are a breast cancer survivor experiencing lingering complications, there is absolutely no reason to wait until 2015 to demand a rehab plan. Most cancer rehab services are already covered by insurance and Medicare.

WHAT REHAB CAN DO FOR YOU
The exact services provided in rehab depend on the type of cancer and on each individual patient’s needs. Breast cancer rehab typically includes care from any or all of the following types of specialists…

Physiatrist, a physician who specializes in nerve, muscle and bone problems that affect how you move. After breast cancer, a physiatrist’s care might center on reducing the effects of neuropathy and easing ongoing pain. For example, physiatrists can order specialized tests and prescribe medications or physical therapy to help.

Physical therapist (PT), who can develop an individualized exercise program that accommodates current limitations while focusing on restoring stamina and strength…increasing range of motion in the affected arm and shoulder…and addressing problems with balance that can result from chemotherapy’s effects on the nervous system. In addition, a PT can provide hands-on therapies that minimize lymphedema.

Occupational therapist (OT), who can help overcome challenges in performing tasks of daily living. For instance, in the case of shoulder problems or lymphedema, an OT can help a breast cancer survivor master difficulties related to getting dressed, grooming and carrying packages. For a patient experiencing chemo brain, an OT can suggest strategies for improving concentration, memory and organizational skills.

Speech-language pathologist, who can help breast cancer patients recover speech or language skills that have been altered by cancer treatments. Speech therapists also may treat cognitive problems, including chemo brain.

Psychologist, who provides counseling to ease fear, anxiety and a sense of isolation or loss—so survivors can get back to enjoying their lives to the fullest.

    Gold STAR:
After recovering from cancer herself, Dr. Silver developed the STAR Program (Survivorship Training and Rehabilitation) Certification for hospitals and cancer centers, which involves a protocol for best practices in cancer rehab. More than 100 hospitals and cancer centers nationwide have signed up for STAR Program certification so far, and it is offered at several hundred sites. For information and/or a referral to a STAR Program in your area, visit the Web site of Oncology Rehab Partners, an organization founded by Dr. Silver and dedicated to advancing survivorship care.

I’m disabled and fired from my last job because of it. I got 10,000 out of the employer. Pharmacies like CVS and Walgreens, etc. will not give you Oxycontin either. Even with a perscription to let you know….if you are really disabled you’ll know what I mean.

Your suggestion that you be allowed to slow Neptune’s rotation to slow its equatorial winds has been disapproved. No interference with Neptune’s rotation will be tolerated.

  11. Don Says:

I would say that the next time some man (or, unfortunately, woman) alleges that there’s no sexual/gender discrimination in hiring and that women aren’t at the top or proportionately represented in science and mathematics because they simply don’t want to be there, I will whip this out.

But those people are pretty capable of twisting and reasoning what they believe are logical, non-gendered reasons for these things, so it’d be a waste of energy.

  12. Mildred Says:

Every one of those items made my jaw drop a little more, but the one where the woman was fired because she posed a threat to her employer’s marriage?? What the ever-lovin’ fuck?

It must be so awesome to be a guy. Gag.

  13. Grace Says:

HOW CLEAR DOES IT HAVE TO BE? He fired her because she was a woman. BUT FOR her sex, she would not have been fired. Please let this ass be covered by Title VII and lose a giant sex discrimination suit. The Iowa judges in this case couldn’t find their own butts with two hands and a flashlight.

ETA: oop at not reading closely enough, but

“Mansfield said allowing Nelson’s lawsuit would stretch the definition of discrimination to allow anyone fired over a relationship to file a claim arguing they would not have been fired but for their gender.”

is bullshit. Isn’t that what sex discrimination laws are supposed to PREVENT? Being fired BECAUSE you are a certain sex?

  14. Violet Says:

An attorney for Fort Dodge dentist James Knight said the decision, the first of its kind in Iowa, is a victory for family values because Knight fired Melissa Nelson in the interest of saving his marriage, not because she was a woman.

If your marriage is seriously that threatened by the mere presence of an attractive woman, then you need to reevaluate how “strong” you think your marriage actually is.

Knight is a very religious and moral individual, and he sincerely believed that firing Nelson would be best for all parties, he said.

Bullshit. He sacked her because he’s a fucking pervert that’s worried he won’t be able to keep it in his pants around an attractive woman, and wants to blame his own failings on her.

  15. Sharon Says:

Yeah, SHE got fired (after 10 years!) because HE couldn’t keep himself from making comments about how hot she looked walking away and texting her to ask how many orgasms she usually had. And the courts ruled it okay and that it wasn’t sex discrimination.

  16. Gloria Says:

What I think I like most is if you’re screwed even if you follow their directions. Dress conservatively? You’re a prude. Don’t joke around and be personable with your coworkers? You’re a frigid bitch. Seduce your way to the top? You’re a slut.

  17. Gloria Says:

Zen Lill, I get your point, there’s no way to come out of this well. I was seen as cold and distant because sure, I befriend my co-workers but a lot of guys confuse ‘being friendly’ with flirting.

  18. Eve Says:

I was just thinking this. I’m studying to be a pastor. You wear a skirt with your clergy shirt and you’re too sexy and inviting men to make comments about your legs (and they do).

You wear pants, you are trying to be a man. You deal with people in a gentle way, you are too feminine and lack leadership skills. You deal with people directly and you are too rude and bitchy. >(

  19. Suzy Says:

Just to add another example of rape culture at work: I got a job at Dominos when I turned 18. I left after a few months due to the extreme sexual harassment (and eventual rape) I faced everyday. The guy who raped me turned out to be a serial child rapist who was COURT ORDERED not to be allowed to work with females.

Apparently my manager (a male, of course) didn’t think he was a threat, so I was pretty pissed when I found that out. My favorite part was talking to the detective after I tried to press charges.

I was told (again, by a man) that I wouldn’t have a case because I didn’t protest enough and because I had a “history of being molested”.

I’m not looking for sympathy, but seriously? How the fuck did no one get in trouble for this? It’s been over seven years, and I’m not traumatized by it. But I’m still angry.

  20. Donna Says:

My boss discriminated pay based on sex, I found out. I got my guy friend a job there doing the same thing I was. I’d been working there almost a year at that point.

One day I happened to see his paycheck and found he was making about 50 cents more than me/hour, even though I was the senior employee. I confronted my boss about it and ended up the highest paid CSR in the district, I’m pretty sure out of fear of a lawsuit.

  21. Angie Says:

This is one thing that frustrates the hell out of me at my workplace. All the cashiers are women. Guys get trained for maybe a month at the most on the registers and then get asked where would they like to be in the store. The girls pretty much have to fight tooth and nail to get off the registers.

  22. Nell Says:

    Suzy#19:

What the ever living fuck is wrong with people? I’m so sorry this happened to you. That asswipe should be in prison and somebody should make that cop walk on legos barefoot forever. :(

  23. Mary Says:

Angie, Don’t blame yourself. It’s absolutely vile that the guy wasn’t locked away. (And Dominos subject to at least *some* fine/legal action/whatever for hiring him despite the court order.)

  24. Jackie Says:

Suzy, a “history of being molested”? WTF is with that?

  25. Kelly Says:

OMG, My first job was Dominos. I have never worked in a more sexually obsessed workplace. I was freaking 16 years old and the men that worked there who were twice my age were making comments about my tight ass and had a fucking countdown until I tuned 18. UGH.

  26. Anonymous Says:

Omg Angie#23, this is me at my store, except the guys get moved off the register after a week (a WEEK) at MOST cashiering. I’ve been there for two months and I’ve seen 4 new hires who were guys come through, cashier for maybe 3 days, and be moved off of the register, while I am always cashiering.

  27. Brenda Says:

I feel you, Angie. The manager is doing his best to hear me out about the problems in my department and fixing them. I feel bad but I think I’m going to tell him yes, I need to be moved off a register or you’re looking for someone new to train in my department along with a new hire because I am outtie.

It is frustrating to see the guys wandering around with their thumbs up their asses and the bad part is they don’t even want to work! Like they suddenly realized that oh shit, I have to pick this stuff up and put it in the right spot and move shelves and price check so they disappear the moment they even sense someone at the checkouts is gonna call on them.

One manager had me straighten baits for fishing and was shocked I got it done in 20 minutes. It takes the guys a full fucking shift to do it.

  28. Reba Says:

the same thing happened at the grocery store I worked in back when I was a teenager.

  29. Colette Says:

Michelle, you wouldn’t believe the shit that goes on at my work. I’m suppose to be the eyes and ears for management and be an example. I’m not a babysitter. My co-workers are all adults, gotten in repremanded and still talk about whatever or do things.

I don’t like it when my co-workers rub their boobs against me and almost in my face (I’m short). Blocking me from using the restroom knowing I have kidney problems. Talking about how many times they came when they’ve had sex with their husbands. Etc. I’m just waiting for the day when a customer gets offended and complains.

I started to walk away when the subject turned inappropriate, but no that meant I was a prude. I’m not a prude, but jesus I don’t want to hear sexual personal stuff at work.

Or recently, we have a new guy at work. He’s quiet, not like most of the others. He looked like a gamer in his mid-20′s. So I talked to him about games. We both stated what our SOs like for consoles too. But because I merely talked to him, that meant I wanted to fuck him.

I can’t go back to school fast enough.

At least the company and management are good. Those examples in here and others like it. Just make me want to pop a blood vessel. All women should have the ability to mind crush those that hurt us and continually wrong us.

Goddamn what I wouldn’t do to be a Girlz, for two minutes.

  30. Linda Says:

Reminds me of my job as a Union Organizer. They would specifically send women to work with areas that had the most men in order to get more people to sign up with us by using women for sex appeal.

We were constantly sexually harassed by men in the community we were trying to work with, and all safety concerns were dismissed (a lot of what we did was actually community organizing stuff that was not directly union related, and we would be sent out to go door to door alone.)

I was literally encouraged by male supervisors to go on dates and sleep with men to get them to sign up. And then male coworkers would complain about how much easier it was for women because men would sign up with us just because they wanted to get with us. As if we were LUCKY for being sexually harassed and treated as nothing but sex objects.

The male supervisors would try to use their positions to get women who worked for them to sleep with them. Thankfully I never experienced this aspect but I know that in other branches of the organization women were told to wear more revealing clothing to work.
    It was completely ridiculous.

  31. Tamara Says:

I temped at a mortgage office years ago and my boss, a woman, told me I had to dress more modestly because the men around me might “get ideas.” I wore sweaters, button-up shirts, and slacks to this job, no makeup. I was there to work and that was it.

Granted this woman was a simple-minded buffoon who said whatever came to her mind and most of it was moronic, but that incident always stuck in my craw.

  32. Harry Says:

Zen Lill, I love the way you deliver facts.

  33. Mark Says:

Howie, what’s up with the aliens?

  34. Vickie Says:

On my job I have to blow the boss and sometimes I get cornered in the copy room and they take turns forcing me to give them blow jobs. I’m 23 and an illegal alien. They keep threatening to tell and get my family deported. I hate this job but my boss pays me $13.00 an hour and I have my mother, and two small sisters to look out for.

I have been working their since I was 19, my boss discovered I was using a false SS number on my 21 birthday and life has been hell ever since. Soon he has been demanding sex, but I tell him I am a virgin so he settles for blow jobs.

I cannot tell my family or anyone. I have been in this country since I was 7. What would I do if I was deported? What would my family do?

  35. Mike, TM Says:

Michelle, what Syria did to the NY Times which was to reroute access to the site. What happens to your readers on occasion happened to the NY Times readers they couldn’t get on.
