Good morning!
Here’s How Occupy Wall Street Freed Americans From Millions In Debt
Occupy Wall Street activists have
canceled nearly $15 million in consumer debt in the first year of a program called Rolling Jubilee that uses crowd funding to buy up and then void consumers’ debt. The program spent just $400,000 of the roughly $620,000 it has raised to date to buy up medical debts that were far enough past due that they were being resold for pennies on the dollar, marking a first-ever incursion by populist activists into an industry dominated by unscrupulous private debt collectors.
The program works by taking advantage of the same business dynamics that fuel debt collection companies. When the firm that originally sought to collect a debt — a hospital, a bank, or a private education lending firm, for example — decides to cut its losses by selling debt on which the borrower has defaulted to a collector, it usually does so at alarmingly low rates. A Federal Trade Commission (FTC) study published in January found that consumer debt sells for
about four cents on the dollar in this secondary market. While debt collectors pay that price and then try to force at least partial repayment by the borrower in order to turn a profit, Rolling Jubilee simply cancels the debt and hopes the beneficiaries might pay the kindness forward by helping to fund the program — that’s the “rolling” part of Rolling Jubilee.
The group defines its success not in terms of the topline dollar figure of debt it has eliminated — $15 million is a very small amount compared to the total secondary debt market, which measures in the tens of billions of dollars each year — but in terms of public awareness of how debt works in the modern economy. “Our purpose in doing this, aside from helping some people along the way…was to spread information about the workings of this secondary debt market,” spokesman Andrew Ross told the Guardian. “Very few people know how cheaply their debts have been bought by collectors. It changes the psychology of the debtor,” he added. “And
that gives you moral ammunition to have a different conversation with the debt collector.”
On top of that moral ammunition, distressed borrowers may finally see regulators come to their aid. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB)
announced last week that it is writing rules for how private debt collectors can pursue repayment from individuals. The move continues a push the agency began late last winter to give borrowers tools for dealing with aggressive debt collection efforts. The agency
fields consumer complaints and provides template letters to help borrowers assert their legal rights in debt disputes. Complaints against collection agencies
tripled from 2002 to 2010, and
one out of every seven Americans now faces third-party debt collection efforts.

Someone getting a loan for a TV knowing they can’t pay for it is indeed theft. Someone getting possibly life-saving medical treatment knowing they can’t pay for it is what anyone would do.

I haven’t seen a word from Zen Lill in too long. My withdrawal isn’t working. Where is my beautiful blog sage?

Like so many people, I sent money to the original fundraising telethon to get this underway. While it’s take some time, it’s good to see that this action is still taking place.
There are many endeavors like this undertaken by Occupiers that aren’t always “branded” by the name, but continue all the same. A good example is Occupy Sandy, which was a first-responder to the people impacted by the hurricane in New York City, and who continue their work today.
The only thing keeping them from doing more is money, which ironically has been plentifully provided to groups like the Red Cross, which have done relatively less to help. Mutual aid really does have built-in efficiencies that the requirements of bureaucracy and politicking dilute.
It’s the old story: if we want something done, and done right–with intelligence and compassion–we have to do it ourselves.

I wonder what the tax implications are? The debtor might be held responsible for paying taxes on the forgiven debt as income.
That sounds like a good program. I have a friend that could use some help; single mother, two young kids. Her husband died a few days after a car accident. Their so called “health insurance” paid a tiny portion of the medical bill.

I wonder what happened to Social Butterfly and that sweet talking Prism Princess. Guess they got together and forgot us.
I’d like to say I could have added a hot moment to that Duo.

Damn, Michelle you need to enforce the rule that we continue yesterday’s discussion on the next days blog. I missed getting into a lively discussion of Constitutional issues with that LSOS David on yesterday’s blog because I didn’t check it before I started reading this one.

While you travel upon this earth,
Be careful of the things you do.
You will be punished for all wrong,
For God,is watching you.
Let each word you have spoken,
Be a star added to your crown.
For it is better to spread good..
Than evil to pull folks down.
Let not your ways, selfish be,
And Live a life that is true.
So you may receive His blessings,
for God, is watching you.

I thank you my friend for the call suggesting that I should carry my conversation over to today’s blog. I am a conservative teacher and as such I hereby proclaim that any unfriendly replying to my comments is “comment abuse” and shall not be tolerated!
I repeat this from my opening discourse on yesterday’s blog – 7. Allen Says:

Melanie and Pearl,
you hardly know backstory and you’re deciding for others?
…pipe down a mo’ and let them handle themselves, I seriously don’t believe any human would create a human baby fire, can’t you sense deep anger/hurt when you read it??
This seems to be a case of her infidelity and men can be incredibly babyish and vindictive in their response to it (can you say EGO?)
(and meanwhile when men fuck around women are often called upon to just forgive, forget and get over it, hmmm).
Lewis, revenge (and I hate that word but this is human nature…) usually takes the form of leveling the playing field with a ‘return volley’ (or reciprocal screwing around) I am not saying it’s right but threatening with the life of a baby is wrong and criminal and you know it so step off your crazy high egotistical horse and set things straight. And talk to a professional about that need for shoving her face in shit, she screwed up just like anyone can, your not above it so stop what you’re doing and man the fuck up.
A word on the revenge fuck…yikes, I can’t tell you how many times one spouse is out screwing around, wife/hubby gets wind of it, starts screwing around for payback and they’re the one who gets the bad ‘publicity’ in the end, ouch.
So let’s them work out their stuff through blogging, poetry or whatever form they wish, bc in the end they live with themselves and if I can I will always be an advocate for a kid, that child didn’t get a say so doesn’t he or she get a chance, IF they are willing to cut to the chase and talk it out?
I could be totally off base but I doubt it (his wording didn’t strike me as real about the baby, her assessment of what happened did : )
Women of MM blog, How’s the planking going out there? Are you adding in all the other exercises we’ve discussed? Here’s a tip: if the holiday season brings out the partyier in you, drink straight booze, top shelf vodka/tequila with a twist of lemon will get you a soft buzz if you have one an hour and you’ll be keeping your liquid carbs low. I carry around a sparkling water in between with lime so everyone thinks I’m alternating betw vodka tonics and booze boosts and I’m naturally funny and charming ; ) so no one questions ‘why aren’t you drinking?’ – I have found that peeps who like to drink and have parties prefer to think you’re cocktailing rather than chilling. Just an observation…
Everyone in US enjoy your holiday and try to remember this: we didn’t ‘discover’ amerika, it was here and there were inhabitants who likely would’ve shared the land but NOOOOoooo we had to take it by force (and rape, pillage and kill while we’re at it, such a proud heritage we have here…)
Welcome back, Alycedale, you were missed and luv the word GOTTdamn, it conveys so much more than plain old goddamn, it’s the fiercely fiery version. word.
Luv, Zen Lill
PS Howie, where art thou brother?!
November 26th, 2013 at 12:27 pm
The real political problem in the results is very difficult and much trouble. To be honest, it needs people extremely confident and have nerves of steel to be ready to face all the problems
November 26th, 2013 at 12:38 pm
Thanks Zen Lill. I wouldn’t hurt anyone and certainly not an infant. Sarah just broke my heart. I honestly didn’t check the DNA so I didn’t know the baby was mine.
I will admit my mother said it looked an awful lot like my father. But she took it back to Sarah’s mother immediately. It was that creep Donald that sold it to me. Why Sarah trusted our son to him I’ll never know.
Thanks again for defending me, but I have been reading this blog for 5 years. I know better than to get upset by something someone says on it.
When Sarah returns form Georgia she can see me in court about custody. I filed for sole custody already. She knows how to reach me.
And yes, I think her poem was beautiful.
November 26th, 2013 at 12:42 pm
Allen, “unfriendly replying to my comments is “comment abuse” and shall not be tolerated!”
Unfortunately for you , you can not dictate that the rest of us have to accept your opinion as unassailable!
We have every right to reply in the negative that your assertions are patently not truth full or believable, and you have no choice to accept that we are allowed to dismiss your opinions regardless of your threats!
If you comment on a public forum you will get a response, they might be positive or they might be negative but you can not resort to attempts at curtailing the opinions and rights of others to challenge those opinions!
After all you had the audacity to comment “unfriendly” to this writers article and you were not banned, is it not profoundly hypocritical of you to claim the right to do so yourself, and attempt to forbid and curtail this same right for others who do not agree with your public statements!?
However I must admit these dishonest and unequal applications of rights (as in I can , but you must not be allowed because you do not believe as I do) seems to be a hall mark of right wing compassionate conservatives.
Strange how they, and you can not see the enormous forest of redwoods in their eyes while denouncing the splinter in their neighbors eye!
November 26th, 2013 at 12:44 pm
Michelle, can I report Kert#14 for spamming, or would Idiocy be the more proper charge?
November 26th, 2013 at 12:45 pm
Yes, Allen and the government shutdown was the democrats fault.
November 26th, 2013 at 12:45 pm
Allen calling yourself a teacher is abuse against all of humanity.
November 26th, 2013 at 12:46 pm
As usual Zen Lill you were spot on.
November 26th, 2013 at 12:47 pm
Ditto Trina, and Yes, Howie where are you?
November 26th, 2013 at 12:48 pm
Allen;
Maybe with their favorite game of obstruct, obstruct, obstruct taken away from them, the teabirchers will finally be forced to actually do their jobs and serve the people who elected them. You think?
November 26th, 2013 at 12:49 pm
Jennifer… the conservatives in office were elected specifically to protect and promote the interests of those that voted for them. by opposing the Presidents liberal policies, these conservatives are doing exactly what they were sent to Washington to do.
Maybe the man you sent to the white house should start doing his job in a way that demostrates some level of competence, and some recognition of his responsibility to people of this country… judging by recent polls… 62% of whom, dont approve of the job is was sent to do… you think?
November 26th, 2013 at 1:15 pm
David;
Congressional approval is even lower–these people got in by promising to do something about jobs and from what I can see they’ve done just about anything but that.
November 26th, 2013 at 1:16 pm
Howie, Social Butterfly, Robet, Mike, and Anonz, are the regulars gone for good?
November 26th, 2013 at 1:27 pm
Lewis, might I suggest you chat with Sarah sans attorneys also? Don’t ever forget that attorneys work for you but are paid highly by you, and even the best of family law mediators are still using the you against her premise and to allow that without a open communication with her about that broken heart may be satisfying (get what YOU want, sole custody) but rarely at the end of the day when you reflect on your life will only that make you feel complete, get the relationship closure and sort some mutually satisfying family visitation/child rearing details, trust me, you and her and this child (that did nothing to break your heart), will have many life moments.
& we all suffer from broken hearts, your character can actually improve depending on how you handle your heart break, make yourself proud, Lewis, do it, man up : ) and always best wishes for a good outcome for everyone involved.
- ZL
November 26th, 2013 at 1:41 pm
Jennifer… if you followed the Congressional races, youd know that the republicans who won, campaigned almost exclusively on defunding or repealling Obamacare… something that conservatives see as a first step in gettting our country’s finances in order. Agree or not with that plan/goal… but that is the platform on which they were elected.
Sadly, the Democrats have run the Government for 5 years now (7 if you include that last 2 Bush years).. so there is little the Repubs can do to impact the dismal economy and employment numbers. That all lies at the feet of the Party that controls the government… the Dems.
November 26th, 2013 at 1:43 pm
& thank you Eugene and Trina, love hearing your kind words, I would keep on coming back anyway but it’s great to be wanted back and ‘spot on as usual’ – extra gratitude for that : ) – ZL
November 26th, 2013 at 2:00 pm
Lewis, I am coming home immediately. You had better be there when I arrive. I am not playing. If you are not there, I will find you and you know what I’m like when you make me mad.
So I messed up. I wasn’t a virgin when we met and neither were you. So I gave up some pussy. Get over it. I refuse to allow you to do this to us because of your damn pride.
I know you have been talking to your boys. For a man who has made as much money as you have you are a child some times.
And answer your damn cell, I refuse to air our differences anymore on the blog. We both will have full custody when I return because we both will be together. That is the way it will be.
Now get off your ass and go over and help both our mothers take care of Jr. I will be arriving at 7:45 pm tomorrow. You had better be there to pick me up.
I know your “dogs” don’t read this blog, but tell them they are not black, neither are you and they can kiss my black ass. Get my cell number from either of our mothers and call me.
They say you are not helping with the baby’s care, all you do is buy toys. Grow up for once and be a father. Change some fucking diapers.
And you did not buy him from Donny. He was taking him to your mother when you came up with that stupid idea. So he took advantage of your stupidity and made a few bucks off you.
I say few because how cheap you were. He said you bargained him down to $150,000 from a half mill. You are pathetic! Count your blessing I am willing to take you back.
Fuck this up and it’s over. I get the baby, BOTH mothers and you get your fucking boys and half the money. I mean “dogs.” LOL
November 26th, 2013 at 2:01 pm
David, if you followed the Congressional races, youd know that the republicans
who won, campaigned almost exclusively on defunding or repealling
Obamacare…
Oh my, I certainly hope that you and the rest of your sexist, racist, corrupt and treasonous movement adopt this belief as the basis of your 2014 ‘strategy’.
November 26th, 2013 at 2:01 pm
Yeah, David, that’s a great argument you’ve got there. Claiming god sent them there to cripple the goverment with illiterate tripe & hapless idiocy. You speak a lot about competence when you know not what it means.
November 26th, 2013 at 2:22 pm
CJ, I made no such claim about god sending anybody anywhere. the voters sent these people there to represent conservative ideas. which are the exact opposite ideas of the current government.
as the polls indicate most americans do not believe in the goals or performance or trustworthiness of this administration. that has nothing to do with the guys who control 1/2 of 1/3 of the government. the repubs actually have very little power. so can we stop blaming them for the failings of this administration.
November 26th, 2013 at 2:59 pm
Sorry, Zen Lill, I didn’t mean to not acknowledge your help. You are a pip as always.
Some men just need to get a clue. He was always coming around when I was with Donny getting his, so I don’t see his being all that mad now. I’m 24, he’s 35 and Donny’s 19.
It was just a fling I took too far. As you said men don’t think the same way when they cheat. I caught him with his blond secretary. She called me a Nigger and spat on me.
I was going to kick her ass but I was pregnant and I didn’t want to endanger my baby. He expected me to forgive him because he fired her. But I caught him buck naked humping the bitch.
His mother, bless her heart, spoiled him rotten when his dad passed away because he is an only child. Why some white people just dote on their only kid is beyond my capacity to understand.
I’m an only child and my mother must have been absent when they were handing out that book. She damn certain didn’t spoil me. You would think since she has worked for his mother all her life she would have picked up on some of those spoiling the child ideas.
Big Mama, Lewis’s mother was the one who did any spoiling when it came to my upbringing. Anyway, I want to thank you again for trying to talk some sense into that silly white boy. For a grown 6’8″ 300 plus 35 year-old man, he can certainly at like a child at times.
I like you. We are big women(I’m 6’2″ 133lbs) who know how to deal with men who are impressed when we enter a room. Plus you tell it straight.
Lewis is just too possessive, while wanting to get his on the side. Plus he lies at the drop of a hat. Here he was telling you he didn’t know that the baby was his.
Donny is black, a very dark black young man, I’m black as a piece of coal, Jr. is white as snow with Lewis’s blond hair. So whose baby did he think it was?
He’s been promising to lose weight since I graduated from college 2 years ago. I told him I wouldn’t marry him until he lost 50 lbs. He gained almost 50. So I took up with Donny.
November 26th, 2013 at 3:41 pm
Lana, you are the second person to bring my name up with PrP. WTF? What would make you think we know each other or that she would even give me the time of day? (?)
/SB
November 26th, 2013 at 3:42 pm
Dave, that’s not a definition of a humanist. Sorry.
/SB
November 26th, 2013 at 4:51 pm
Sorry if you and Zen Lill were absent from the blog for a long time and PrP were the one I was talking to I would have linked you and Zen Lill.
Sorry, didn’t mean to offend you.
November 26th, 2013 at 4:53 pm
it is to me. what do you know that makes me wrong?
November 26th, 2013 at 4:55 pm
I don’t believe in mixing the races. Besides black women are so over sexed. Why would a white man want to marry one and breed with it?
November 26th, 2013 at 5:05 pm
Irene, bitch see that’s the kind of racist shit that gets on my last nerve. But I understand Michelle’s philosophy of letting racists bitches like you mouth off.
Many of my home girls are white so I know that is just your problem you are mouthing. Me, I’m not interested in no white man cause you have to have something between your legs to get between and please me.
But I can see why it could be intimidating to you. Don’t worry I won’t take your man.
November 26th, 2013 at 5:07 pm
Irene, my brother is married to a black woman. You need to grow up.
November 26th, 2013 at 5:08 pm
Irene, my father is white and my mother is black. What’s up with your bad attitude? Lose your man to a sister?
November 26th, 2013 at 5:11 pm
Hey Social Butterfly if you aren’t interested in Prism Princess, I am. If only she would lean my way. But she’s probably a mother with two or three little tyrants driving her crazy.
Prism Princess if you are reading this, just dreaming.
November 26th, 2013 at 10:44 pm
Sarah, you had me with ‘…too possessive, while wanting to get his on the side’
yup, and then they act surprised and like A-holes when you do it & that’s exactly what happens. I have experienced this.
So, It goes like this cheater dudes:
every time you do take your testosterone liberty with someone else, your woman gets a ‘one free dick’ card, if she’s smart she’ll keep her leveling the playing field thang to herself bc you all behave like jackasses and that you did nothing to deserve it, ha, like screwing your secretary (how lacking in imagination : )…but shit happens.
Am I condoning ‘his n her’ cheating, oh hell no, but if you don’t keep your appendage to your honey then why on earth should your honey be required to give allegiance to you??
You go shag your secretary and then your heartbroken when she has time with a young buck, wtf?
Dudes, seriously – get a grip and stop being shocked at the ‘drama’ you cause!
Thanks for addressing me, Sarah, and I wish you the best, give your kid a snug for me.
Irene, you’ve already been told but wtf with the black women are over sexed, what backwoods kind of idea is that?
Horniness, just like sexiness, just like (name it) is not bound by skin color
(oh except black men are usually packin’ more heat where it matters ; )
PS there’s no such thing as over sexed, just my opinion, you either find a partner that likes to engage as much as you do or handle matters yourself or a mix of that.
Why do I get the feeling that you probably deny yourself sensual and sexual pleasures?
People who are in touch with themselves have no time for that kind if hate talk, so I’m wishing for you to dig yourself more so you’ll be more open to the ‘live and let live’ concept.
- ZL
November 26th, 2013 at 11:00 pm
Just to clarify: I’m not suggesting an ‘eye for an eye’ (or a P for a P – that initial works fr both genders : ) just for revenge sake but it usually happens bc the first cheater (male or female) set themselves up for a very human response, ‘to do unto another as they just did to you’ (you hurt me, i hurt you, simple and childish so not always a very conscious thing to do but very human nonetheless) & hmm and that’s not as precious as ‘ do unto others as you would have them do unto you’ now is it?
We are human and we do stupid things and we may get carried away even but if you can digest the self deception and the deception of another in the scenario your playing out, you learn a great deal from the lesson and isn’t that part if what we are here for? To live, learn, be, do and serve…(& add your own here) & you may even be able to sort things out and carry on together (maybe?)

I guess my previous comment was too controversial for HuffPo…
Let’s hope that Zimm doesn’t ever run into someone like me, small, female, 125lbs, white, fully licensed to carry a firearm while on vacation in Florida…I will surely tell you that my Liberal butt would be justifiably terrified of him and would most definitely stand my ground. Fruits Reduce Risk for Deadly Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm
A few years ago, my coworker’s uncle—a vigorous, funny man who was only in his mid-60s—suffered the rupture of a major blood vessel…and he died the same day. No one knew until it was too late that the uncle had an abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA), a ballooning in a portion of the blood vessel that carries blood from the heart through the chest and abdomen.
Like most people with AAAs, the uncle had experienced no symptoms. Typically the condition is discovered only if a person undergoes an ultrasound screening…or when the AAA ruptures, in which case the death rate is about 90%, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Ultrasound screening can detect AAAs before they rupture, providing an opportunity for patients to undergo surgical repair of the defect. However, like most people, my coworker’s uncle had never had this screening. His devastated family wondered whether there was anything else that might have helped prevent this disaster.
Alert: Fruits Reduce Risk for Deadly Aneurysm
Hopeful news: A recent study suggests that eating enough of a certain type of food may provide some protection against AAAs, reducing risk by more than 20%…
BIG BLOOD VESSEL STUDY
Researchers in Sweden took advantage of national health registers and two very large studies—one for men and one for women—that started back in 1987. The 88,000 participants had no history of abdominal aortic aneurysm, and they all filled out questionnaires asking how often they consumed nearly 100 particular foods, including a variety of fruits and vegetables.

Aortic Aneurysm
Over the 13 years of follow-up, the researchers identified 1,086 participants who were diagnosed with AAAs. In nearly 83% of cases, the patients were men…in 20% of cases, the AAA ruptured. The researchers adjusted for other AAA risk factors—including history of smoking, waist circumference, exercise, alcohol consumption, diabetes, heart disease and more—and then analyzed the effects of various dietary habits.
The big winner? Fruit, which was associated with a surprising degree of protection. Among men, those who ate the most servings of fruit (more than two servings per day) had a 21% lower risk for AAA than those who ate the least fruit (less than 0.7 servings per day)…among women, those who ate the most fruit had a 29% lower AAA risk than those who ate the least fruit. Perhaps even more importantly, eating two or more servings of fruit daily was linked to a 43% reduction in the risk for ruptured AAA among both men and women.

Surprising: Although people often lump fruits and vegetables together when talking about health benefits—and many even assume that vegetables are more healthful than fruits—this study found no association between vegetable consumption and reduced aneurysm risk.
KEEPING BLOOD VESSELS FROM BURSTING
Although this study wasn’t designed to explain why fruits might offer protection against aneurysms, the researchers suggested that it may come down to oxidative stress. Inflammation is instrumental in the development of abdominal aortic aneurysms—and oxidative stress promotes inflammation. Fruits, of course, are rich in antioxidants that help combat oxidative stress…and the particular antioxidants in fruits (such as procyanidins, which most vegetables lack) may have especially beneficial effects in the aortic wall.
Most popular: In this study, the most commonly consumed fruits were apples, pears, bananas, oranges and other citrus fruits…but other types of fruits also may be beneficial.
Should you be screened? AAAs usually do not produce any symptoms prior to rupturing, so many people who have them are not aware that they are in danger. The US Preventive Services Task Force recommends a onetime ultrasound screening for AAA for all men between the ages of 65 and 75 who have ever smoked…and Medicare covers the cost of screening for such men, as well as for men and women with a family history of AAA.
Alert: You Should Never Ignore These Rashes
If you don’t fall into either of those categories but still want peace of mind, talk with your doctor about whether an AAA screening ultrasound is appropriate for you. The average out-of-pocket cost when insurance does not cover the test is about $390. If an AAA is found, surgery generally is done to repair the weakened area of the blood vessel before it has a chance to burst.
