Peace on Earth

Good morning!
Peace on Earth. This Metro Goldwyn Meyer cartoon was released on December 9, 1939 and nominated for the 1940 Academy Award for Best Short Subject, Cartoons. Peace on Earth is a one-reel cartoon short directed by Hugh Harman, about a post-apocalyptic world populated only by animals.
Two young squirrels ask their grandfather on Christmas Eve who the “men” are in the lyric “Peace on Earth, good will to men.” The grandfather squirrel then tells them a rotoscoped history of the human race, focusing on the neverending wars men waged. Ultimately the wars do end, with the deaths of the last men on Earth, two soldiers shooting each other. Afterwards, the surviving animals discover a copy of the Bible in the ruins of a church. Inspired by the book’s teachings, they decide to rebuild a society dedicated to peace and nonviolence (using the helmets of soldiers to construct houses). The cartoon features an original song written to the tune of “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing”.
According to Hugh Harman’s obituary in the New York Times and Ben Mankiewicz, host of Cartoon Alley, the cartoon was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize. However, it is not listed in the official Nobel Prize nomination database. Mankiewicz also claimed that the cartoon was the first about a serious subject by a major studio. In 1994, it was voted #40 of the 50 Greatest Cartoons of all time by members of the animation field. It was also nominated for the 1939 Academy Award for Short Subjects (Cartoons).
Directed by Hugh Harman. Produced by Hugh Harman and Fred Quimby. Written by Jack Cosgriff, Charles McGirl, and Khat Harman. Voices by Mel Blanc (Grandpa Squirrel) and others. Original Music by Scott Bradley. Charles Wesley, hymnist, Hark! The Herald Angels Sing (uncredited).

Readers: So…are we living in Peaceville yet? Blog me.
Zen Lill: Nice to catch up with you!
Hey Social Butterfly: How are you? I HOPE that you enjoyed your Thanksgiving too! What’s up sister?
Curt: I agree about taking responsibility for our decisions. That is why I made the statement of visiting the stores to support the workers but don’t buy anything while you’re there, when of course I knew that would never happen. People don’t look past their own needs to look at the big picture. I feel the same when so many products made in China, are imported into America and we, the consumer, buy them. And then we complain when there are no manufacturing jobs in the states, and a high unemployment rate. We can’t have it both ways.
Ann: I have shopped at museum stores before and plan on shopping them this year too. Love the different gifts that you can find there and no where else. Thanks for the reminder.
Rebecca: Woo Hoo – good for you girl!
Scott: I love supporting small local businesses. Then you are sure to find something special and unique.
Trish: Me too! And Don’t forget Robert, RT and Mike, TM.
Lloyd: Yes, amazing that a group of people, the repubs, who don’t want Obamacare, certainly have a lot to say and care a whole lot that the website is having issues. If they really don’t want Obamacare then why do they care if it is running well or not? Because if they can’t get rid of it the least they can do is knock it, even though they and their relatives will be jumping on board to benefit.
Sidney: Either you’re living on another planet, watching FOX news or you are a racist. Which one is it?
Jimmy: And there you have it. A person would rather get sick and possibly die than have a black man succeed.
I think I’ll leave it at that and begin my Sunday.
Happy Hanukkah to those celebrating!
Peace out.
