Where Will You Be Rising For Women Today?
Posted by Michelle Moquin on February 14th, 2014
Good morning!
I’ll be in SF at City Hall. Last year was a blast! Girls and guys…Don’t miss out this year! Come join me today, on V-Day. Support your sisters by rising and dancing to put an end to violence and gender inequality for women and girls.
Last Year at One Billion Rising:
San Francisco Uses Valentine’s Day to Draw Attention to Sexual Abuse Against Women
This Valentine’s Day, San Francisco is hosting a seemingly a-typical Cupid event, yet one that’s probably more compelling than any Hallmark bouquet you might get.
For the second year in a row, city leaders will welcome “One Billion Rising for Justice Day,” a global campaign spanning 207 countries that raises awareness of domestic and sexual abuse against women. One Billion Rising began in 2013 in response to the alarming statistic that one in three women throughout the world will experience sexual or domestic abuse in their lives. The campaign invites survivors of abuse and their allies to join in solidarity to fight against the oppression and humiliation inflicted upon victims.
On Feb. 14, from 4-6 pm, thousands are expected to gather at City Hall in San Francisco to dance in support of One Billion Rising. The evening will include musical performances by the Black Eyed Peas and Taiko Drummers from Ruth Asawa SF School of the Arts. There will be appearances by many city leaders, including Mayor Ed Lee, District Attorney George Gascón,V-Day Executive Director Susan Celia Swan, Commission on the Status of Women President Nancy Kirschner-Rodriguez and Board of Supervisors President David Chiu.
Last week, Chiu proposed a resolution confirming the city’s adoption of “One Billion Rising for Justice day” this year. The Board of Supervisors is expected to vote on the resolution tomorrow at their regular board meeting.
Mariya Taher, the Community Liaison Manager at Women Organized to Make Abuse Nonexistent (WOMAN Inc.), an agency that helps victims of domestic abuse in San Francisco, says she thinks that the “One Billion Rising for Justice Day” is a necessary reminder that gender discrimination happens right here in San Francisco. “The well-known statistic that 1 in every 3 women will be a victim of gender violence is a horrible reality and this also means that the likelihood of you knowing someone who is a survivor of gender violence and/or sexual assault is very real,” says Taher.
In conjunction with the event, VDAY has organized a free legal clinic at UC Hastings to consult survivors of domestic and sexual assault. Throughout the day, volunteer attorneys will provide legal advice to survivors of abuse who are facing problems, including employment and immigration issues.
Taher says that the importance of recognizing and eliminating violence in the city is a community effort. She concedes that domestic abuse and sexual assault not only affect women, but are also on the rise in the LGBTQ community in San Francisco. Although the event draws attention to the prevalence of sexual assault, it is also a time to “celebrate the strength of survivors who have undergone these experiences.
“It is a global movement, and it’s time to dance in protest of the violence that occurs in our communities today,” says Taher.
A powerful video showing the abuse of women…and women rising.

Readers: I’ve written so many times about the repubs trying to take away our rights of our bodies. Telling us what we can and cannot do. I can’t tell you how many more writes I have in my queue, about this. It’s time to end this madness. This means that we all need to participate in more than one way. It means blogging about it, and supporting women by attending events such as One Billion Rising, and writing congress. All of us (women and men) need to care enough to do something.
Men: The best thing you can do for your woman and for the wonderful women of this world for Valentine’s day…really any day…is put an end to the violence and abuse toward women and girls. What will you do in support?
It’s a bit quiet out there. How about flapping your lips?! It’s Friday…Its V-day…It’s Valentine’s Day. No excuse…Your lips should be flapping today for so many reasons!
Last but not least…thank you Eve Ensler for your strength, passion and dedication to helping women and girls RISE.
Happy Friday! Happy V-day! Happy Valentine’s Day! Blog me.
Lastly, greed over a great story is surfacing from my “loyal”(?) readers. With all this back and forth about who owns what, that appears on my blog, let me reiterate that all material posted on my blog becomes the sole property of my blog. If you want to reserve any proprietary rights don’t post it to my blog. I will prominently display this caveat on my blog from now on to remind those who may have forgotten this notice.
Gratefully your blog host,
michelle

All of those 7 things are just part of the trends of the times. They would have been supported by a republican or a democrat. They are not what Reagan is famous for.
Reagan is really known for his venal hatred of minorities, the poor, the left-wing, and anything Russian or communist.
Reagan ramped up the politics of hate that is based on mis-understandi ng or false- understanding. Reagan was famous for his personality — a stupid and bumbling old man with a violent temper.

This is off-topic, but you can return to it: some words from Barry Goldwater – Republican icon:
“On religious issues there can be little or no compromise. There is no position on which people are so immovable as their religious beliefs. There is no more powerful ally than Jesus Christ, or God, or Allah, or whatever one calls this supreme being. But like any powerful weapon, the use of God’s name should be used sparingly.
I’m frankly sick and tired of the political preachers across this country … Just who do they think they are? And from where do they presume to claim the right to dictate their moral beliefs to me?
I am warning them today: I will fight them every step of the way if they try to dictate their moral convictions to all Americans in the name of “conservatism.
Mark my word, if and when these preachers get control of the [Republican] party, and they’re sure trying to do so, it’s going to be a terrible damn problem. Frankly, these people frighten me.
Politics and governing demand compromise. But these Christians believe they are acting in the name of God, so they can’t and won’t compromise. I know, I’ve tried to deal with them…
When you say “radical right” today, I think of these moneymaking ventures by fellows like Pat Robertson and others who are trying to take the Republican Party away from the Republican Party, and make a religious organization out of it. If that ever happens, kiss politics goodbye.

Social Butterfly, wouldn’t it be nice to celebrate at the Supper Club in San Francisco. I’ll be there with a white top with red and green hearts from 8 till 11 if you don’t show.
If you do, then, it’s till you want to leave.

Michelle, just mention a place in the Bay Area. I’ll be there. Happy Valentine’s Day.
February 14th, 2014 at 11:52 am
Goose#5, Not off topic at all. You’re just furthering the point of how far the Republican Party has gone to the crazies.
I went to the trouble to check some of those quotes and was amazed at some of the other quotes attributed to Goldwater.
Of course he became more liberal with age, but even when he ran for president, he had some opinions that are are too left-wing for Republicans now, 50 years later.
February 14th, 2014 at 12:08 pm
Zen lill let’s meet at a place in your local. Name it.
February 14th, 2014 at 12:17 pm

ARE COLDS AND THE FLU MOST CONTAGIOUS BEFORE OR AFTER YOU START SHOWING SYMPTOMS?
Myths about contagion are a regular part of life. Remember when AIDS could be transmitted by a handshake? Most fictions regarding how you can catch diseases aren’t quite that bizarre and off the mark — they usually sound pretty reasonable, which is how a lot of them get passed through generations as unquestioned truths.
Many of us understand that when it comes to a cold or the flu, we’re most contagious before we start feeling sick; that by the time we’ve got a runny nose, sore throat and achy muscles, the damage to the people around us has already been done. In fact, many of us are completely wrong.
If you think about how a virus works, it makes sense that we’re most contagious when our symptoms are at their worst.
Viruses like influenza and those that cause the common cold (there are a couple of hundred of them) have an incubation period once they get into your body.
The virus gets into a group of healthy cells and then goes about requisitioning their survival apparatus from the inside.
During this incubation period, while the virus is multiplying inside those infected cells, you have no symptoms — no sore throat, no runny nose, no achy muscles — and no virus spreading like wildfire throughout your body so that every drop of saliva or mucous you produce contains it.
And that’s how a virus spreads from one person to another: By a healthy person coming into contact with the bodily fluids of an infected person, whether those fluids are airborne (as from a sneeze) or left on a doorknob by a sick person who just wiped his nose.
So if you have no symptoms yet, it’s a lot less likely that you’re going to spread the virus to another person.
Once the cells that have been taken over by the virus start to die, that’s when all hell breaks loose. Here’s when you start having symptoms, and you start spreading it to everyone you know if you’re not careful.
Some of those symptoms are caused by the virus itself (runny nose and sore throat, for example), and others are caused by your immune system(fever and exhaustion, for instance).
When the virus breaks out of those dead cells and starts infecting tons of other cells throughout your body, your immune system recognizes that something is wrong and begins its counterattack.
All of this can take days to happen. With the flu in particular, the time between exposure and the onset of symptoms is usually between one and four days.
So, when are you most contagious? Most experts agree that adults with a cold or the flu start being contagious about a day before they start experiencing symptoms.
For the flu, the contagious period then lasts five to seven days into the illness. For children, the contagious period for the flu can last up to two weeks after they start feeling sick, even if they start feeling better before that.
The contagious period for a cold lasts about three to four days into the illness. As a general rule, people with a cold are most contagious about three days after their initial exposure to the virus.

JK, yes that thing of yours is sweet. As a matter of fact it is too sweet. Like sugar diabetes, it is just not good for a gal.
I should have listened to Michelle and vetted your sorry ass. Thanks for the flowers and candy. But I will be sharing them with my new girlfriend.
I’m gay now, for real.
February 14th, 2014 at 1:02 pm
Michelle, your picture smiling back at me with that gorgeous head of hair makes every day a special Valentine celebration for me.
I’m 23 and in love with an unattainable Goddess!
February 14th, 2014 at 1:18 pm
Tiffany, it’s all good. But consider this I sent you Three dozen roses, a pound of assorted Chocolates and four bottles of Champagne. The two bottles of Dom Pérignon and chocolates were for you and your friends of course.
But I assumed you would save that $800 dollar bottle of Luis Roederer Cristal Rose 2004 not the 2006 for us to sip and make love at our old special place.
If you like and she’s down for it, bring her along and I’ll tap that ass too. You know I’m not only long, good and rocking, I last and last way past your orgasm.
It’s all good, my Sweet Valentine.

Whether you’re sharing today with a significant other or you’re spending time with your family and friends, Valentine’s Day is a special holiday filled with love, compassion, and…sweets.
It’s also 6 weeks into the New Year, ard those of you who have been working hard to maintain a healthy body deserve a reward.
I wanted to share some ideas for desserts that will satisfy your sweet tooth without adding extra pounds or inches to your waistline.
Below are 6 delicious and healthy desserts to break up the monotony of any diet and give you a lighter take on your Valentine’s Day indulgence.
1) Grilled Fruits
There’s nothing like a grilled pineapple right off the grill. The heat caramelizes the fruit’s natural sugars and gives you a naturally sweet treat that is only 80 calories per serving. You can substitute pineapples with anything you’d like – grilled apple, pears, and bananas are equally satisfying and delicious.
2) Biscotti
If you’re looking for a cookie substitute, it’s hard to find a better replacement than real Italian Biscotti. With a wide variety of flavors like pistachio, hazelnut, and espresso you’ll never get tired of these unique Italian treats. Eat them plain, or dip them in your afternoon coffee. Either way, one full-sized Biscotti comes in at less than 70 calories.
3) Greek Yogurt and Berries
Not only is original greek yogurt full of living probiotic cultures that have a mass of incredible benefits, but it’s also a wonderful way to enjoy your favorite berries. If you want to change up the flavor, try adding oranges and mint leaves instead of berries! All this can still arrive at less than 150 calories.
4) Ricotta Strawberry Sherbet
This one takes a bit more work, but I promise the taste is worth it. Find a low-fat ricotta cheese at your local grocery store and mix it in a blender with 1 box of sugar-free strawberry Jell-O, 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract, and 2 cups of mixed fruits. Blend that mixture until you reach the desired smoothness and then chill it for a guilt-free dessert.
5) Dark Chocolate
Filled with antioxidants, this is one of my personal go-to desserts. Along with real, heart-healthy cocoa, dark chocolate allows you to cook like an exquisite chef. Dip your favorite fruits in dark chocolate or use it to cover your favorite raw nuts (like cashews and sunflower seeds).
6) Honeydew Shake
All you need is a honeydew melon, some low-fat vanilla frozen yogurt (preferably made with natural sugar), and a blender. Throw the two ingredients in, blend until smooth, and you have a decadent, refreshing shake to keep your sweet tooth satisfied. (Tip: add a granny smith apple or a kiwi for additional flavor!)
You can try these easy-to-make desserts, or come up with your own healthy alternatives to complete your family’s meal in style. Use low-fat milk, dark chocolate, and especially REAL FRUIT for the healthiest recipes.
With these tips in mind, there’s an endless variety of delicious, light, and decadent desserts to keep you successful in your diet or general health goals.
Have a Happy Valentine’s Day and a great weekend!
