Good morning!

In case you’re sick of me posting about the minimum wage, too bad. Here it is again from the Progress Report. I’ll stop posting about it when something big gets done. Hint, hint…let’s all do something. Thank you. :)

The Progress Report Banner

Keep In Mind

11 Things The Senate Should Remember While Voting On The Minimum Wage

After returning from a two-week recess, the Senate is planning to vote on raising the minimum wage to $10.10 this Wednesday. The bill, called the “Minimum Wage Fairness Act,” needs 60 votes to advance thanks to the de facto GOP filibuster threat. And while in the past we have used this space to outline many of the different benefits of raising the minimum wage to $10.10, in anticipation of this important vote we wanted to go over some of the most important reasons one more time. Here they are:

1. Increasing the minimum wage to $10.10 and indexing it to inflation would raise the wages of 28 million workers by $35 billion. Raising the minimum wage would provide Americans who work hard a better opportunity to get ahead while giving the economy a needed shot in the arm.

2. In 2013, CEOs made 774 times the pay of minimum wage workers. While the top CEOs made an average of $11.7 million in 2013, full-time workers making the minimum wage took home only $15,080 a year.

3. Nearly two-thirds of all minimum wage workers are women. Raising the minimum wage to $10.10 would benefit 15 million women.

4. One million veterans would benefit from a minimum wage increase. After risking their lives to protect our country, 1 in 10 veterans working in America today are paid wages low enough that they would receive a raise if the minimum wage is raised to $10.10.

5. Raising the minimum wage will cut government spending on food stamps. Millions of workers earning the minimum wage make so little that they qualify for food stamps (SNAP benefits). This, in effect, amounts to taxpayers subsidizing corporations paying low-wages. Raising wages for low-income workers would actually cut government spending on SNAP by $4.6 billion a year, or $46 billion over the next 10 years, as workers earn enough on their own to no longer rely on the program.

6. Minimum wage workers are older than you think. Nearly 90 percent of minimum wage workers are 20 years or older. The average minimum wage worker is 35 years old. A higher minimum wage doesn’t just mean more spending money for a teenager, it means greater economic security for the millions of Americans who rely on it as their primary income.

7. Businesses see the value in increasing the minimum wage. Nearly 60 percent of small business owners recognize that raising the minimum wage would benefit businesses and support raising it. In fact, 82 percent of those surveyed don’t pay any of their workers the federal minimum wage of $7.25.

8. It won’t hurt job creation. States have raised the minimum wage 91 times since 1987 during periods of high unemployment, and in more than half of those instances the unemployment rate actually fell. Over 600 economists signed a letter agreeing that a minimum wage increase doesn’t hurt job creation.

9. In polls, nearly three-quarters of Americans support a minimum wage increase to $10.10. Pew Research found that 73 percent of Americans back a minimum wage increase.

10. Millions of children will be more secure. If we raise the minimum wage to $10.10, 21 million children will have at least one parent whose pay will go up.

11. A $10.10 minimum wage means a $16.1 billion boost for people of colorRaising the minimum wage is a matter of racial justice: people of color are far more likely to work minimum wage jobs and those who do are far more likely to be in poverty. A $10.10 minimum wage would lift three and a half million people of color out of poverty and add $16.1 billion to their incomes.

BOTTOM LINE: Over the next few days, as Senators take to the chamber floor to debate and then vote on this legislation that would help the economy and millions of American workers, they should make sure they keep in mind these vital facts on why the minimum wage should be raised to $10.10. A vote against increasing the minimum wage is quite simply a vote against working Americans.

Why don’t you just write it the way you intended to so we can all understand. That drivel you just wrote makes no sense. It’s the kind of stuff Zen Lill writes occasionally. No wonder people think you are one and the same person.

I’m willing to give you the benefit of the doubt. But fix that post please. I want to know what you are saying, I mean if you even know.

  2. Emily Says:

I wish people wouldn’t be so quick to jump on Zen Lill’s back. She is an excellent writer. You are just jealous. If Prism Princess has taken to copying her style, then I say copying is the sincerest form of flattery. Good for her.

  3. Danielle Says:

I agree with you Emily, but frankly I think that Zen Lill can handle these idiots. She is a strong role model and she gives as good as she gets.

  4. Robin Says:

I agree with you Emily and I would add Prism Princess’s name to that list. You creeps who go after PrP need to get a life.

  5. Zen Lill Says:

I commented yesterday post accidentally and no time to repost. I don’t defend myself, you either love me or you don’t and either way is fine with me, I life myself enough to say that. Luv, Zen Lill

  6. Zen Lill Says:

    Love*

  7. Tony Says:

I like you enough to say that too Zen Lill.

  8. Janet Says:

If I lived in the Bay Area, PrP would be gay by now. I want that woman desperately. My legs get wet just reading her attitude.

  9. Ilene Says:

I often wonder if anyone even cares what the topic of the day is?

  10. Boris Says:

Get real Janet, you can’t make someone gay. PrP is all woman. I want to break me off a piece of that every time I feel her writing to me.

Prism Princess If you ever are in Tucson, Let blog it and we got a date.

  11. Health Info Says:

Don’t you just love those mornings when you wake up and you feel well-rested, completely refreshed, and you think to yourself, “Now THAT was a good night’s sleep!”

And aren’t those days usually your most productive? Aren’t those the days where you’re in the best mood, you feel more mentally focused, and you have tons of energy?

Don’t you wish you could sleep that well every night…and feel that great every day?

Not getting enough of the right kind of sleep can also affect your health in more serious ways. People with even mild insomnia are four times as likely to suffer from depression. Worse, new research shows that poor sleep puts you at a greater risk of heart disease, obesity, and diabetes.

Well, there are actually a few simple things you can do to make sure you get the most restorative sleep more consistently…so you can get the most out of your day.

    1) Keep A Regular Sleep Schedule
The first step is to determine the perfect amount of sleep for yourself. It’s different for everyone…8 hours a night is the average, but some people feel more rested with 7 or 9 hours. This all has to do with your body’s unique circadian rhythm…which controls your sleep cycle.

So, keep track of the amount of sleep you get each night for two weeks, and also make a note of how rested you feel each morning. This way, you’ll be able to determine your optimal amount.

Then, you want to create a steady pattern for yourself by really trying to go to sleep and wake up at the same times everyday. This might be the most important action you can take to get a better quality of sleep, because your body requires regular, consistent cycles of “awake” and “sleep.”

    2) Allow Your Mind To Wind-Down BEFORE Bed
This sounds simple, but it’s actually one of the hardest things to do in this fast-paced, information-driven world. We tend to stay “connected” online or on our phones right up to the moment we go to sleep.

But your mind needs to start easing into its “sleep cycle” about an hour before you go to sleep. So, I try to stick to a pre-sleep routine every night. This is a great way to spend some time on yourself, and it allows your body to relax…so that when you do hit the pillows, you can fall asleep easily and soundly.

Here are some ideas on how to create your own sleep routine about an hour before bedtime:

Dim the lights in the house (light prevents your body’s natural production of melatonin, essential for sleep.)

Turn off the TV and the computer – these keep your mind stimulated and prevent your “sleep cycle” from engaging.

    Take a hot bath.
    Listen to relaxing music.
Read a book or magazine by soft light.

    3) Adjust Your Nighttime Food & Drink Intake
What you eat and drink before bedtime has a huge impact on your quality of sleep. But cutting down on food right before you go to sleep can also help you lose weight…it’s one of the first rules of dieting.

Sometimes that can be hard to stick to, but these tips might make it easier:

Avoid large meals before bed (eat dinner earlier!)
Reduce caffeine consumption overall (and especially none within 4 hours of bedtime)
Avoid drinking too many liquids in the evenings. Drink plenty of water in the daytime, but at night this results in frequent trips to the bathroom and disrupts your sleep cycle.

If you really need a snack before bed, try one of these: half a turkey sandwich (tryptophan!), granola, a banana, or a small bowl of whole-grain & low-sugar cereal.

    4) Supplement Your Diet With Herbal Sleep Aids
Your body produces its own natural compound to help you get to sleep – melatonin – but often this chemical is underproduced due to the over-stimulation of our busy lifestyles. It’s crucial to supplement your body’s natural production of melatonin…as well as with other, even more powerful herbs designed to help you sleep.

    Valerian Root Extract
    Hops
    Skullcap
    Passionflower
    Chamomile
    Melatonin

Valerian Root Extract, in particular, is important because it’s been shown to improve your quality of sleep…and this, to me, is critical.

  12. Hugo Says:

Ilena#9, why worry, we will get around to it sooner or later. It’s the input from the Howies(my personal favorite), Zen Lills, Social Butterflys, Roberts, Prism Princess, and the like that make this blog so irresistible.

So Howie, what do you have for us up your sleeve?

  13. Roman Says:

Here’s what I don’t understand about this issue – if you don’t feel that you’re not earning enough – than strike-out on your own and make your own like all of our ancestors did when they immigrated to this wonderful country.

We need more people who want to do better and become independent. Take a risk and make your own – we’re too consumed by requiring others to provide for us. When I got out of the Army 35 years ago – I came back home to Philadelphia with less than $200 in my pocket.

My Dad was a plumber and my Mom cleaned houses. I finished the apprentice program with the plumber’s union and like many others – was at their mercy to get hours. While my wage was more 4x the min. wage at that time – it was irrelevant because I was only getting about 8-10 hours a week.

I was tired of being broke, and started my own company going door to door begging for work. That was over 30 years ago – and I now have 200 employees. I could have sat on my butt waiting for the plumber’s union to give me more work, or I went out on my own and created jobs for others.

  14. James Says:

We can’t get the people in point # 1 better skills so we will give them a raise instead? Actually raising the minimum wage would result in more people making minimum wage. What happens to the incentive to achieve in demand skills that make more money?

  15. Allan Says:

A job you can’t live on isn’t much of a job. Especially if the low wage you THINK you are earning is STOLEN from you by management fraud.

But most surveys, AND the historical record, show that a living wage creates more spending, and therefore more business, than a poverty wage. By the opposing reasoning, we would have MILLIONS more jobs if companies were allowed to BUY SLAVES instead of hiring people for wages: minimum wage zero! But then, who (other than slave merchants) could afford to BUY what industry produces?

  16. CB Says:

Several surveys, including the Gvt’s own, show a half million person job loss if this is enacted. Yet the union ignores this and is still pushing it.

  17. ZenLill Says:

To #13 Roman’s point: I would prefer to spend dollars on helping people elevate themselves through better job training bc offering $10/hr is okayyyyy but it won’t get anyone much job security (does that even exist anymore anyway?) so I personally am for it in theory and principle bc I cannot imagine how a main breadwinner can support anything on $10/hr so I say give it to them, however, let’s talk about #16 CB’s point and an excellent one it is bc companies will simply cut jobs, much like benefits programs for full time workers (employers cut them to below 40 hrs and voila’ they don’t have to do anything) – each move creates a series of other actions in motion it’s not just cut and dry, do this – make minimum wage higher, things get better, in case you haven’t noticed it often doesn’t work that way – at all…

Elevating (and funding) a persons dream is the way to help and while everyone is not a bootstrapper like Roman it would assist in building people up as well…if living your life cost more than what $10/hr can provide they’re still running at a deficit and people running around fearing life due to lack of cash is set up for an imminent crash. Isn’t there a fair way to offer them a higher wage and higher aspirations and training to go along with it?

I just love when people here decide for a random reason like PrP writing more stream of consciousness like I do, (and if that’s rambling unintelligible reads for some of you, well reread the comments and you’ll someday get your comprehension chops together, it’s not hard, I followed PrP just fine : ) – that suddenly we are both figments of Michelle (and Doug’s?!) imagination?! Hilarious…but keep it coming it keeps me coming back and it also cracks me up : )

**Okay so I do write and then add parenthetical thoughts, & that does take a sharp reader to keep up, he he he ….

    Luv, Zen Lill

  18. Max Says:

CB, No one ever accused the unions of having their members’ best interest at heart.

  19. Reggie Says:

Zen Lill#17, funny though how PrP didn’t bother to comment. I guess if she is speaking for herself as you, then that makes sense.

But that would imply that she is you or you are her. I’m not knocking the writing as much as pointing out that the similarity is just too close.

Of course PrP would know stuff because Zen Lill is Michelle’s pal and she would be in the loop.

  20. Velvet Says:

Max#!8, you are in error again, in fact it is : No one ever accused big corporations of having their best interests at heart.

  21. Lenora Says:

I just ignored Roman#13 because when the people want to force corporations to give their fair share assholes like that always appear with their survival “success” stories.

Those are merely shills for the corporations. First the implication that others are not tired of being broke is another republican way of calling the out of work lazy.

You try knocking on doors today to get work and you will get a jail sentence. Also even in Roman’s times that would work only for whites, if you were an OTW back then, you could get lynched for even thinking about going into a white neighborhood.

Plus it was a legislated white America then, so don’t go telling us how you, America’s only true Affirmative Action Beneficiary, made it on his own.

White males had all the opportunity then and most of them now. Plus they are the cause of ALL of the unemployment problems. This shit is not happening in a vacuum.

  22. Michael Says:

Sorry Zen Lill, you just got taken by a not so slick republican paid to troll blogs and knock Unions. Notice how he starts off blaming Unions for the unemployment problems.

If it were not for Unions would we have 8 hour work days. Did you know that when it was proposed that the same arguments were used to keep Congress for voting for it. The exact same one that employers would just split up the work day and make everyone part time.

It is the standby boogey-man for the corporate entity. Think about it if it were not for Unions you would not have any of the workers’ rights that you have now.

The real problem is cheapskates like this Roman. He wants to benefit from the advances that he gets because Unions strike to get them, but he doesn’t want to pay his fair share of Union dues so he comes off all antiUnion and shit.

Tell assholes like that to not ask for overtime when forced to work over 40 hours a week. Tell assholes like that not to mind employer sexual harassment,

But then he is a white male so doesn’t have to worry about that who would want that tiny prick anyway. And we are so tired of white men telling us how they pulled themselves up by their bootstraps and made a company that hires other people.

Usually it is just plain lies. On the occasion when a white boy has created jobs for others, it is never as he says. In almost every case he had governmental help on every level. Most of which was initiated by political pressure put on politicians by Unions, like small business loans, government grants, tax credits for hiring, etc.

And like Lenora#21 said in the previous years, all those benefits went to white men. It is part of the judicial record that in some cases white males deliberately deprived OTWs whose taxes went to subsidize those benefits from availing themselves of them. http://aapf.org/2011/03/race-the-house-we-live-in/

That’s the main reason white males hate Unions, they force the government to hand out the benies equally.

  23. Trudy Says:

Zen Lill Roman#13 is just full of shit. Employers have been using that if you try to force us to be fair we will punish the workers this way………. line forever.

Here are the statistics on whether raisint the minimum wage helps or hurts unemployment. http://aneconomicsense.com/2013/03/06/the-impact-of-increasing-the-minimum-wage-on-unemployment-no-evidence-of-it/

Republican shills like Roman#13 are polished in using half truths to make an issue solvable their way. If he did all that because he was tired of being unemployed, then why was he unemployed in the first place?

I mean unless there were no doors to knock on before he “started his own company.” As if that was a novel idea and he was the only one who thought of going “door to door.”

Think about his lies it is plot for a movie maybe but he didn’t “start a company” going door to door. If it was that easy, he wouldn’t have been unemployed in the first place. LSOS is the best you can label that liar.

  24. Ellen Says:

“First of all, it is worth noting that the minimum wage, when adjusted to reflect general inflation, is a good deal lower now than a half century ago.” http://aneconomicsense.com/2013/03/06/the-impact-of-increasing-the-minimum-wage-on-unemployment-no-evidence-of-it/

That just about kills any legs #13Roman has to stand on. Ungrateful Union and government tit sucking white boys like him are always trying to impress with a variation of that -I pulled myself up by my bootstraps – bullshit.

  25. Owen Says:

If you doubt that raising the minimum wage would help the economy all you have to do is check out what fox fake facts is selling. http://www.foxbusiness.com/personal-finance/2014/03/28/study-states-that-raise-wage-see-decreased-jobs-high-teen-unemployment/

Notice it says there facts say that it comes from a conservative think tank and then they quietly say the study actually says that their study says “could have a potentially negative effect.” But they don’t let that tiny caveat stop them from heightening the rhetoric that increasing the minimum wage will hurt the economy.

Fox is sticking to if Obama is for it, we are against it.

  26. Dwight Says:

Michael#22, “And like Lenora#21 said in the previous years, all those benefits went to white men. It is part of the judicial record that in some cases white males deliberately deprived OTWs whose taxes went to subsidize those benefits from availing themselves of them. http://aapf.org/2011/03/race-the-house-we-live-in/

That link would be – “Black farmers, poised to receive a historic settlement after years of discrimination from the USDA, don’t think the attacks on Shirley Sherrod are a coincidence.” http://www.yesmagazine.org/peace-justice/the-real-story-of-racism-at-the-usda

This account puts another lie to why the whiteboy controls the all those small farms. They did it by getting government subsidies and loans to tide them over through hard times and by making sure that OTW farmer weren’t given those same benefits.

That racist practice helped the white boy to force our the OTW farmers because they when belly up. Now those bastards are complaining that bigger and just as greedy, white boys are forcing them out. That’s karma smacking you in the ass motherfucker

And white jUStice has it so that even when the government admits they conspired to deprive the OTW farmers of the benefits their tax dollars were paying for, whites have resisted compensation.

Suddenly we have white boys everywhere raising affirmation action issues for the OTWs. The white boy’s assertion of affirmation action by OTWs is really compensation for true Affirmative Action received by white males at the expense of the rest of us.

When a government uses its police power to enforce legislation designed to give a race or gender an advantage over other races and gender simply because of that beings race and gender, then that is Affirmative Action.

Only the american white male has enjoyed that benefit for almost the first 200 years of this country’s existence. This is not debatable. It is a fact. They were all the government heads, held all the government jobs, Only white males could be business heads, cops, judges, lawyers, doctors, etc because the government legislated they were the only ones who could be that.

They didn’t earn a gottdamn thing but they are constantly telling us when we seek compensation for those wrongs that we need to earn what we get.

The rest of us are just trying to play catch up and these racists bastards insist on putting their feet on our backs every step of the way.

First off Roman #13 is completely full of shit. Now I don’t think that I am alone in feeling that G.E. and other large corporations should pay thier own damn taxes. I know they think the American Public should pay those taxes for them and they can just make lots of profit and laugh all the way to the bank, screw that idea!

The email below is from Jay Davis, a CREDO activist in Washington, DC. Jay started a petition on CREDO Mobilize, where activists can launch their own campaigns for progressive change. Will you help Jay pressure Senator McConnell to end General Electric’s massive tax loophole by signing his petition and sharing it with your friends and family?

Sign the petition: Tell Senator McConnell to end General Electric’s tax loophole.

    Dear Chris,

General Electric is one of the worst corporate tax dodgers out there. Thanks to a few major tax loopholes, it has managed to pay zero dollars in federal income taxes for four recent years. The company has mobilized an army of lobbyists in Washington this year because the “active financing” loophole — which lets General Electric put off paying its U.S. taxes indefinitely — recently expired.

But instead of making General Electric pay its fair share of taxes, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said recently that the active financing loophole should be renewed without the cost being covered. That’s why I started my own campaign on CREDOMobilize.com, which allows activists to start their own petitions. My petition, which is to Senator Mitch McConnell, says the following:

End the “active financing” tax loophole, which has allowed General Electric to pay zero taxes in four recent years.

Tell Senator McConnell: Put an end to General Electric’s tax loophole.

The active financing loophole lets General Electric avoid paying U.S. taxes indefinitely when it shifts the profits it makes from interest and dividends to offshore tax havens. If extended, this loophole will cost the federal government $70 billion in lost tax revenues over the next 10 years. That’s not right.

Our country should not go further into debt to keep tax loopholes open for a profitable, tax-dodging corporation like General Electric.

Since Senate Republicans frequently vote in lockstep with Minority Leader McConnell, his stance on the active financing loophole will play a major role in determining whether or not it is renewed.

The Senate could take up the active financing loophole soon, so we’ve got to act fast to pressure Senator McConnell to stop fighting to prevent General Electric from having to pay taxes. Sign my petition to tell Senator McConnell to end the active financing tax loophole and make General Electric and other big corporations pay their fair share of taxes.

Will you join me and add your name to my petition to Senator Mitch McConnell to demand that he stop trying to let General Electric off the hook for paying taxes?

    Thank you for your support.

    Jay Davis
