Wonderful Women Of The World

Good morning!

Fashion is my thing. What we clothe ourselves with says a lot about us. Supporting women and girls is also my thing. How we treat them says a lot about humanity.

Unfortunately, women and girls aren’t treated so good throughout this planet. (And I am being kind here.) So when my two passions converge into something beautiful and amazing, I take notice, and I give credit where credit is due.

I was perusing Vogue Magazine again, and I came across another write, where another Wonderful Woman Of The World, was featured –  this time, using fashion to help young girls.

Phoebe Dahl, through her charitable clothing line “Faircloth & Supply,” helps young girls in Nepal avoid being victims of Sex trafficking by enabling them to be able to get an education. For every item of her clothing line sold, Dahl donates uniforms to young girls where “education is often out of reach for children whose families can’t afford requisite school attire.”

“If girls can’t get an education they’re considered worthless, and their parents often sell them to sex traffickers,” according to Dahl in the May Vogue article ‘One For One’. “We give them two uniforms, so they can go to school and choose a trade – like farming or sewing – and at the end of the course, we give them a microloan to start their business.”

According to tinyhandsinternational.org, “In Nepal an estimated 10,000-15,000 girls are trafficked across the border where they are sold into Indian brothels and forced to become prostitutes.”

The article (which can be found here http://www.tinyhandsinternational.org/human-trafficking/sex-trafficking-nepal) also said that these girls are expected to have sex with 40 or more clients a day. They are beaten or tortured if they try to run or protest.

This was taken from Dahl’s website:

WHAT WE DO…
For each item sold by Faircloth Supply, one school uniform is donated to a girl in Nepal. Through our partnership with General Welfare Pratisthan (GWP), the girls receiving these uniforms are enabled to attend school and achieve the education they rightfully deserve.
The Faircloth Supply team made its first visit to the GWP headquarters in Nepal’s capital of Kathmandu this past March of 2014.  We met with the incredible team behind GWP and their Executive Director, Mahesh Dev Bhattarai, who acted as both our guide and educator, teaching us about the Nepali culture and customs. GWP’s mission is to create an organized, self-reliant society, free of the social and economic disparities symptomatic of gender inequality. In pursuit of this goal, GWP has made providing education opportunities to girls one of its top priorities. There’s a gentle, understated quality of compassion present in the nation’s character.  From sublime landscape to humble homes, Nepal is nothing if not welcoming.  And yet, given the country’s natural earnestness and beauty, the mistreatment of women throughout Nepali culture is an even more distressing pill to swallow.

When viewing the country’s rich and colorful beauty alongside the extent to which women are mistreated and undervalued in their society, the contrast is stark.  There are currently 67 million children who aren’t in school, and over 50% are girls.  As a founding member of GWP, Mahesh stresses schooling as a key to empowering Nepali women in the community and breaking a cycle of discrimination that has been endured by generations of women before them.
For a young girl in Nepal, the benefits of education are for more than just academic. Girls who receive education are less vulnerable to HIV infection, human trafficking and other forms of social & economic exploitation. They’re more likely to marry later & raise children who will attend school themselves, and go on to contribute positively to their family’s economic well-being.  Long term, GWP’s work aims to build a natural infrastructure that will reduce poverty amongst the marginal population, lower incidents of gender-related violence and the amount of girls taken into sex trafficking, and improve existing health conditions among women. It’s a long and ambitious list, and none of it can be achieved without providing education to girls in even the most impoverished communities throughout Nepal.
GWP programs have impacted over 900 girls and their families, and their reach is growing. The foundation is actively working in 20 districts in Nepal and has reached more than 500,000 beneficiaries through its outreach programs that focus on income generation, health improvement, education, and the environment.
Mahesh and his team of teachers and mentors are pioneering programs at women’s health’s clinics as well – implementing STD/HIV/AIDS prevention programs in Kathmandu and the five surrounding districts.

Readers: Dahl has come up with a way to help girls not only get an education but boost their local economies in the process. Awesome. What other solutions can you come up with? Blog me.

Oh…before I go, a big congratulations to Dahl and her partner Ruby Rose on their engagement! Love this sweet picture.

Still Strong, Still Committed, Still City College
City College is an indispensable part of San Francisco – one of our most important ladders of opportunity. The education CCSF provides has enabled thousands of San Franciscans young and old to invest in themselves and build a better future for themselves and their families.

On Tuesday, the Department of Education responded to my inquiry about the veracity of public statements from the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (ACCJC). The Department of Education’s welcome response proves that ACCJC is able grant CCSF a good-cause extension of accreditation. For the ACCJC to refuse to allow good-cause extension – even after this clarification from the Department of Education, even after all the monumental progress City College has made along its Roadmap to Success – would be destructive, irresponsible, and could be viewed as a political act. For the livelihood of the students, the community, and the state, the ACCJC must send in a new evaluation team with a fresh set of eyes and allow a good-cause extension of accreditation, a team that can see the progress that CCSF has already made. CCSF is still strong, still committed, and still City College.

Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi joined community leaders at City College of San Francisco’s (CCSF) Chinatown/North Beach Campus earlier this year to highlight the significant progress made by City College, and emphasized the vital impact CCSF’s open doors have on our community.

    Testament to Courage
San Franciscans are very proud of the achievements of Harvey Milk, one of the first openly gay elected officials in our nation’s history. As a member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, he was a champion of human rights and symbol to the world for LGBT civil rights. When Harvey Milk was sworn in as Supervisor, he said his “victory signaled a green light to all who feel disenfranchised, a green light to move forward.”

Yesterday at the White House, I was proud to join Ambassador Samantha Power, singer Mary Lambert, and Stuart Milk, Harvey’s nephew, as the United States Postal Service unveiled a stamp featuring Harvey Milk, the first time an LGBT hero has been honored in such a way. This stamp will be a testament to courage and a symbol of pride to anyone who has ever felt discrimination or cared about those who have.

    Honoring our Service Members
This Memorial Day, we honor all of the men and women who have served—and who continue to serve—in our armed forces. Both at home and across the globe, our service members have given their lives so that the United States can remain the land of the free and the home of the brave. For all of us, they are heroes; for millions of Americans, they are parents, brothers and sisters, friends and neighbors. Together, as one nation, we honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice on our behalf, never to return to the country they served. But we also must honor those who did return, to whom we will always owe a debt of gratitude.

In Congress, we must continue to ensure that the deeds of our service members are remembered in the actions of our lawmakers; we must treat every day as Memorial Day. On Wednesday, the President forcefully reiterated his commitment to get to the bottom of recent allegations of gross misconduct at some Veterans Administration sites across the country. I share the President’s outrage. These allegations represent misconduct that is completely and utterly unacceptable. And it will not be tolerated. Once we have the facts, there must and will be accountability. We must act to confront these allegations, and tackle the broader challenges that still confront our veterans—both at the Veterans Administration, and as they transition to civilian life. We will continue to uphold our solemn pledge: just as the military leaves no one behind on the battlefield, we will leave no veteran behind at home.

    Congratulations, Cal grads!

Congresswoman Pelosi addresses the graduates and family of UC Berkeley’s class of 2014, encouraging them to stay engaged in their community and to challenge the status quo for the sake of the common good.

Please feel free to forward this information to your family and friends. To learn more about these efforts, to express your views, or to sign up for email updates, please visit my website. I am also on Twitter at http://twitter.com/NancyPelosi.

  5. Sam Busters Says:

Millions Lost in Latest Romance Scams

Online romance scams are costing lovelorn Americans a fortune — and wrecking lives in the process.

In some cases, victims have lost their entire savings, and even their homes.

Despite the fact that these scams get widespread publicity, they’re on the rise.

According to IC3, the Internet Crime Complaint Center, dating scams, or sweetheart scams as they’re sometimes called, account for more than 10% of all online financial frauds.

And the most vulnerable group, which used to be the middle-aged and older male category, is now older women.

IC3 says almost two thirds of the losses are accounted for by women aged over 50. In the younger age group, men are still more commonly the victims.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) receives an average 10,000 complaints of this crime every year — and this is likely just the tip of an iceberg. Most victims probably don’t want to admit they’ve been duped.

As we reported previously in Don’t Go Breaking My Heart: The Top Four Online Dating Scams, although some romance scams just involve love cheats, most of them are financially motivated.

The usual approach is for the scammer to “groom” the victim over a period of time, building up their confidence in the relationship, and then to ask for money on all sorts of pretexts.

These days, contact often starts via social networking sites like Facebook and chat rooms rather than simply dating sites, which are increasingly vigilant to the scam risk.

More recently, we’ve also seen incidents in which victims have been tricked into receiving and forwarding stolen items or products bought online with stolen credit cards.

    Scale of the Scam

Oftentimes, the scale of the scam takes your breath away.

For example, earlier this year, Ohio’s Attorney General Mike DeWine reported that the average loss suffered by victims in the prior year was $25,000, but the biggest single loss was $600,000.

And in Minnesota, victims were reported to have paid out a total of $1.5 million in the past two years.

In nearly all cases, nationwide, the money is never recovered, having been wired to an untraceable destination usually overseas.

It might seem unbelievable that people would part with sums like this but the psychology of loneliness and the yearning to find a partner can sometimes overrule the common sense we normally rely on to avoid being duped.

For instance, a New Jersey woman who was recently conned out of her $86,000 retirement savings explained of her romantic connection that turned out to be bogus: “It felt good to have that male attention. You want to believe, because you think you’re developing a relationship.”

She even overrode her own suspicions before cashing in an IRA and sending the proceeds to the scammer: “I’ve always been a very rational person, and everything told me: ‘No, you have to question this. It doesn’t sound right’.”

    Another Type of Victim

Sometimes, the victim is not just the individual in search of romance but also the person whose identity is stolen and used by the scammer.

Case in point: A man whose first name is Alec has repeatedly had his identity used to trick victims.

In his blog he recently reported receiving an average of one scam notification involving his name every single day!

He writes: “These scams take place over a number of popular social networking and communication tools.

“While I’ve taken down nearly 50 fake Facebook profiles, I’ve also had my photos appear in profiles set up on dating sites such as eHarmony, Christian Mingle, Match.com, and Plenty Of Fish.

“There are also dozens of Skype accounts that have been created using my photos. The ones that concern me the most are those that actually use my name and photos.”

Several victims even had Skype conversations with the person they believed to be Alec.

He believes the scammers are actually even blocking him from accessing the profiles they’ve set up in his name. The same thing has happened to at least one other victim he has identified.

How to Avoid a Romance Scam

Avoiding a dating scam is a matter of not letting your heart rule your head.

Take a serious tip from the New Jersey woman we referred to earlier: “No matter what they say; no matter what kind of tale they tell you, you really have to be brave and say no.”

But we know that can be easier said than done, so check out this list of actions and red flags from one of our earlier issues, 10 Ways to Avoid Online Dating Scams.

One of the leading online dating sites, Match.com, also offers its own list of Online Dating Safety Tips & Advice, which includes guidance to avoid offline romance scams as well.

In addition to these points, beware of your identity being stolen by the dating tricksters.

If you find your name is being used on social networks or Skype, contact their customer service people immediately and ask for the page to be removed.

And it goes almost without saying that if you’re looking for romance, use common sense. Follow these tips to stay safe.

Alert of the week: Feel safe because you have a $3.99 app called Virus Shield on your Android smartphone? Be warned that this top seller has been pulled from the Google Play store after security experts said it didn’t work. The developer allegedly agreed and said it had been posted by mistake

    Hi Michelle:
Nice how Phoebe Dahl & Ruby Rose found away to make a buck and benifit the girls of Nepal simultaneously. This is the kind of thing most any type of business could do, IF they were so inclined. Helping others is not rocket science, all it takes is the will to do so.

Here is something that I found in my maibox this morning. I don’t know about you, but I would prefer to buy produce that has not had it’s appearance enhanced by some kind of paint job. Particularly by some chemicals that have been banned in Europe as they may be carcinogenic.

How much do you really know about those shiny apples and other beautiful-looking produce you pick up at your local grocery store?

For instance, did you know that most conventionally raised apples in the United States are drenched with diphenylamine (DPA)? That same chemical was banned in Europe in 2012 because its makers could not prove that it didn’t pose a risk to human health. Scary, huh?

At EWG, we believe that you deserve to know exactly what you’re eating and what effects it could have on your health. That’s why we’re calling on the EPA to take action to study DPA right now.
