Good morning!

I HOPE I didn’t already post this. It has been in my queue for quite some time, so my guess is, I have been seeing it so much that I feel like I already posted it. I searched but couldn’t find it, so if I did…oops, here it is again.

From Think Progress:

A Woman With Perfect Grades Is Worth The Same As A Man With A 2.0 Average

college students

CREDIT: SHUTTERSTOCK

It may seem like high school grades don’t mean anything later in life, but a new report finds that high school grade point average (GPA) is a strong predictor of income in adulthood.

That doesn’t play out evenly, though. The team of University of Miami researchers found that a one-point increase in GPA means a 12 percent boost in earnings for men and a 14 percent boost for women. Even so, there’s a big gender gap in total earnings. A woman who got a 4.0 GPA in high school will only be worth about as much, income-wise, as a man who got a 2.0. A woman with a 2.0 average will make about as much as a man with a 0 GPA.

GPA Earnings Chart-600x310

The data also show that average high school GPAs are significantly higher for women, but men will still end up having significantly higher income later on.

It also found that high school grades can indicate the likelihood of going to college, and that a one-point increase doubles the chances of completing a degree for both genders.

The finding that even the highest achieving female students can’t close the gender wage gap is true for higher education as well. A woman who is one credential ahead of a man will always be worth less in terms of income: a woman with an associate’s degree makes less than a man with a vocational degree, a woman with a bachelor’s makes less than a man with an associate’s, and a woman with an advanced degree makes less than a man with a bachelor’s. Even among recent college graduates with the same grades, majors, and career fields, men will make more in their first jobs.

While many factors go into the gender wage gap that means women who work full-time, year-round make 77 percent of what their male peers make, educational attainment clearly can’t explain it. In fact, when all factors are taken into account, about40 percent of it remains unexplained. It’s likely discrimination is playing at least some role in that remaining portion.

Readers: What do you want to say today? Blog me.

Iraina: Thanks for speaking up on what you know. Between you and what Howie inquired about from your comments, it certainly answers many questions.

If you don’t mind me saying, your mafioso boyfriend and his clan are misogynistic dogs. But I know you know that. With a comment like that to you, and those kind of actions from him and his friends toward women, his words of “I love you” don’t mean shit. I suggest you start dipping into those millions if you can, get out, and save yourself before you become one of those forced prostitutes, if not worse off. I HOPE for your safety.

Howie: I HOPE Israel heeds your warnings this time, and your information will inspire positive action, warding off doomsday.

Carol: This was in my queue to post, and you beat me to it. No pun intended. Just another sick example of tiny penis thugs with badges, on the loose.  What I don’t understand is why no one ran out and stopped the thug from beating on her. If you have time to film it, you have time to do something. Perhaps if she only got punched 10 times or less instead of 15 she might be in less critical condition. At what point do you stop filming or watching and get out to help? After she’s pronounced brain dead? I am livid that no one came to her defense sooner. Especially because these days a cop caught on film beating up on someone doesn’t necessarily mean he is going to go to jail or even getting fired. So why not intervene and save the woman before the cop has the chance to do real damage.

Prism Princess: Thanks for posting. Sweet voice. I HOPE some day her wishes will some true. How are you?

Sonja: Nicely stated. I agree with so much of what you brought up which is why I posted the write. You just clarified what I didn’t think needed to be said, but evidently did, considering some of the comments posted.

Casey: I am so sorry you had to go through that at such a young age with no support to help you through. Hell, women are raped all over the world at all ages with no support. It is horrific. But I can’t imagine what you went through, and how much courage you needed to do what you did. Thank for sharing what no doubt other women have had to endure too. My best to you.

Mina: Happy to hear that our resident Hero Anonz has been helping the girls of Mexico. I’m sorry for what you and the other girls have been through, and relieved that you are getting some training. Obviously it has served you well. Sending you and the girls my best, and wishing Anonz continued strength and safety.

Happy Monday!

  1. HOWIE Says:

Why are people rioting against Israel for protecting its country from thousands of missile strikes coming from Gaza and hitting Israeli citizens randomly on a daily basis? These citizens have done nothing. They consist of men, women and children in cities being bombed daily by Hamas in Gaza. Hamas is vicious and has one agenda . . . To maim and kill as many Israelis as possible.

Some European cities such as Amsterdam and Paris have their facts backwards and people are rioting in the streets against Israel. They believe that Israel is the aggressor.

“No country could sit by and not take steps to try to deal with people who are sending thousands of rockets your way,” U.S. Secretary of State, Kerry said.

Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham, a member of the Senate Armed Forces Committee, urged Israel to “stay as long as you need to stay, go wherever you need to go, do deal with a viper’s nest called Hamas.”

“If it’s left up to Hamas, thousands of Israelis would be dead,” Graham told NBC’s “Meet the Press.”

Netanyahu agreed. In an interview with ABC’s ‘This Week,’ he said Israel has tried to avoid killing Palestinian civilians through phone calls, text messages and leaflets dropped on their communities before attacks.

But Hamas doesn’t “give a whit about the Palestinians,” Netanyahu said. “All they want is more and more civilian deaths.” Hamas is a well-financed and well armed Terrorist organization receiving assistance and ammunition from Iran and Iraq — much of it high tech.

Israeli prime minister Netanyahu said his top goal is to restore a sustainable peace, but then will ask the international community to consider demilitarizing Gaza to rid Hamas of its rockets and shut down the tunnels leading into Israel.

Kerry also said any cease-fire agreement must be without conditions or “any rewards for terrorist behavior.” He did not mention the Qatari or Turkish efforts.

Kerry also blamed the latest wave of violence on what he called Israel’s “legitimate” efforts to pursue and punish those who last month kidnapped and killed three Israeli teenagers whose bodies were found dead in the West Bank.

These are not innocent people. Hamas uses Gaza citizens to hide behind and show the world press how cruel Israel is for collateral damage which is staged by Hamas.

Do not be fooled by their tactics.

    HOWIE

  2. Malika Says:

Zen Lill you are so lucky, I am a beautiful girl I’m told by men. But I’m gay and I can’t find a gay girl to date.

And here you get asked out. I moved to the S.F. Bay Area last week and I still haven’t been asked out by a girl.

  3. Darrel Says:

Michelle as an ex cop I can tell you why it is not a good idea for any civilian to interfere with a police officer doing his duty (even if it appears that he is abusing his prisoner) because the cop can kill you or arrest you for obstructing a police officer doing his duty.

It is very dangerous to advise a civilian to interfere, it is best that he or she document what they are seeing and call 911 to report it.

  4. Rollis Says:

The logical corollary of all of this is that going to college doesn’t guarantee higher income if you are female.

The data also show that average high school GPAs are significantly higher for women, but men will still end up having significantly higher income later on.

It also found that high school grades can indicate the likelihood of going to college, and that a one-point increase doubles the chances of completing a degree for both genders.

This data suggests that higher educational attainment does not automatically raise a person’s earning potential. Working as a carpenter may earn more than a data clerk, GPA and degrees notwithstanding.

  5. Helena Says:

. well my 4.0 isn’t worth as much as my boss’s GED

How many men and women really end up with zero for a GPA?

And as far as an average being a “predictor”. Well, consider this graph (not the subject matter, but the graph) http://www.iqcomparisonsite.com/SexDifferences.aspx

Showing men with a slightly higher average than women.

Yet, if you were to conclude from that, that men > women, there are huge exceptions to that statement.

That is there are a whole bunch of women > 105 and a whole bunch of men < 95.

Or, in this case, a whole bunch of people with 3.5 GPA making more money than people with 4.0 GPA. Enough exceptions to where GPA doesn't really "predict" squat.

  6. Leonard Says:

Already the republicans are paring off to try to get the Russian, Seleznev returned to Russia.

  7. Sharon Says:

Evidence of systemic inequality in our society is important.

Determining whether that inequality stems from discrimination at the workplace, inequality of opportunity, gendered biases against certain occupations, etc. is something that’s important to know when we try to combat it.

But there’s no reason that would make such inequality acceptable, so I don’t see how studies showing gender inequality are somehow invalid just because they don’t show the exact breakdown of the inequality.

  8. Vanessa Says:

This is a note to the women who will write in trying to defend the men. Your personal story doesn’t change the facts….

Women earn less in virtually every job.

It’s true that women tend to cluster in certain fields and men in others, and the ones women dominate usually pay less. But in virtually every job category tracked by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average woman earns less than the average man.

Women only make more in three occupations for which there is adequate data to compare men’s and women’s earnings — they lose out in about 115 others. Even in those low-paid jobs that tend to be dominated by women, such as nurses, teachers, and secretaries, men earn more.

And even in male-dominated industries like manufacturing, finance, construction, mining, and agriculture, women earn less.

  9. Kent Says:

Just to alert the readers Helena#5 is a male friend of mine who used my computer to post the information from that bogus site run by some of his Nazi friends.

They make up shit like that to convince people that men are more intelligent that women and that IQ test aren’t bias.

They love making uo this type of shit and then citing the shit as evidence of the point they wish to make. It did look real though didn’t it.

And it is always good to be a member of the group that you are cutting down when you point out the link.

I was a member of that Nazi clan until they broke my cousin’s nose for dating an asian kid.

I saw the evil in trying to so hard to defend a race that is not threatened by non white races. Hell they threatened that young man and broke my cousin’s nose because they were bigots.

    Kent

  10. Julie Says:

OMG! Kent#9, My boyfriend who is whites gets such a kick out of posting to blogs as “StrongBlackMan.” He uses it to generally make blacks look stupid. And to as you said get get him to admit that he knows of studies that say blacks are just stupid or lazy.

I used to think it was funny now I see it as cruel and just mean spirited.

  11. Steve Says:

You women that follow that man hater Michele are obsessed with something that’s not true but in your own minds.

It has been proven time and time again that the reason women earn less is because of the careers they choose…..period

  12. Caroline Says:

Vanessa#8, That was so true back in my day.I often worked for men with less education and skills than I had. Yet I earned about 35% less in wages than they did.

The janitors often earned more than the women with advanced degrees in many companies. Too bad progress hasn’t been made on this front in the last sixty years.

  13. Trish Says:

I wonder if men with bigger penises make more money than men with

    smaller ones.

Because, after all, it’s all about the almighty penis, isn’t it?

  14. David Says:

I want a statistic that controls for the same job, same hours, same family choices, etc…

Last month, President Obama repeated an often-recited line that women “make 77 cents for every dollar a man earns” and that “a woman deserves equal pay for equal work.” This isn’t a new argument; politicians and others have used these types of statements for years to vilify big businesses as anti-women. Over a decade ago when she was a senator, Hillary Clinton attempted to pass the “paycheck protection act,” claiming it was un-American for firms to discriminate against women.

But this is misleading. The statistic Obama cites is only the average difference between men and women, across all jobs. It doesn’t control for the types of job, the number of hours worked or for time taken off (to raise children, for example).

If you insist that the gender wage gap is a result of discrimination against women, here are a few other claims that must be equally true. By the same logic, young men are discriminated against in favor of young women. Women in their 20s without children out-earn men by as much as $1.08 to every dollar, according to some estimates. It must also be true that white men are discriminated against in favor of Asian-American men, who earn over 5 percent more than white men. To claim either of these as discrimination would be ridiculous, though, right? There are differences in job types, education levels, hours worked, and other factors that lead to these wage differentials. But these factors are just as responsible for the overall difference in wages between men and women.

Once you control for factors such as college major, time off of the labor force to raise children, and hours worked per week, the gender wage gap essentially disappears. A big part of the difference in pay is due to the choice of jobs: women choose to enter career fields that pay less than those that men choose. Women are still more likely to be Kindergarten teachers while men are more likely to work in finance. In short, firms aren’t discriminating against women. The reality remains that women, on average, do earn less than men. But to blame it on discrimination is misguided.

    Steve#11, Prove it!

    I proved my position….period.

Out of 115 careers….in only 3 did women make more than men…less than 3%!!!

And you are just another obsessed with proving that White Male Privilege doesn’t exist!

Let me guess….you are White and male!

  16. Wilma Says:

David#14, Okay I happen to be doing a term paper on just that subject. It backs up President Obama 100%.

Here are some links if you’re really interested.

This one talks about the gender gap in general and links to several other sources.
    http://thinkprogress.org/economy/2014/04/08/3424043/gender-wage-gap-myth/

This one is kind of interesting and talks about the geographic variation in gender pay.
    http://www.forbes.com/sites/meghancasserly/2013/09/19/the-geography-of-the-gender-pay-gap-womens-earnings-by-state/

This group found that the pay gap exists very shortly after college (before most people will have started families).
    http://www.aauw.org/research/graduating-to-a-pay-gap/

This story talks about how there is even a gender gap in children’s allowances.
    http://thinkprogress.org/economy/2014/04/23/3430025/gender-gap-allowance/

I would be interested in finding out where the author in your link comes up with the statistic “Women in their 20s without children out-earn men by as much as $1.08 to every dollar, according to some estimates.” He doesn’t provide any sources and I can’t find any data that supports that.

  17. Steve Says:

Vanessa#15, When ever someone tries it seems to be reported and hidden.

I know you have also read all the reports proving it but you choose not to believe them .

    You have a nice night.

  18. Vanessa Says:

    Steve#17;

NO you don’t get away with it that easy…..I have read reports…and all of them find your positions completely ridiculous.

You cannot even provide evidence….YOU think I should find evidence to support YOUR opinions….

You imply that there are SCADS of these studies….YET you provide NONE!!!!

A bit like fox fake facts only here you have to put up or shut up. That republican bullshit that it is out there but people are hiding it won’t work in an intellectual atmosphere.

Show us a link or take your bull someplace else.

    la epopeya falla!

  19. Ruth Says:

Trish#13, On the contrary that is why the white boy makes sure that black men get paid less. It is about penis size because those tiny penises need to insure they don’t have to compete with a man making the same amount of money who has a bigger penis.

  20. Steve Says:

Vanessa#18, You have a good night.

    Believe what ever you want

  21. Vanessa Says:

Steve#20, I thought so. You have nothing to back up your bullshit and lies.

Just like Climate Change…..I believe what the EXPERTS say…..you believe what YOU want…..

  22. James Says:

Howie, thanks for all your help. In a country where military service is mandatory for most citizens, and military losses are considered every bit as tragic as civilian ones, the reaction to the setbacks was electric.

Newspapers and broadcasts have been dominated by images and tales of the fallen — mostly young faces barely out of high school — and interviews with parents concerned for offspring so clearly now imperiled.

I hope the military listens to you in the future. I fear if they do not that a quagmire is at hand. There can be no victory in Gaza. … Israel must limit its time in the Strip. We have to get in find the source of the rockets destroy them and get out.

You were right again about the new technology and fire power the Hamas have. For the first time they have hit Tel Aviv with a rocket.

  23. Lenka Says:

Howie, my check on one of your comments concerning Putin and the Russian Mafia has proven to be almost 100% correct. Amazing! How does an american supposedly without government connections know so much about the internal affairs of Russia.

To know that this – The name of Roman Seleznyov became widely known three years ago, in 2011, when he, a student in Morocco, was hurt in a terrorist attack at a cafe in Marrakesh; his head and hands were injured. The attack killed 16 people and injured 23. Seleznyov Jr. underwent a surgery in Moscow; he remained in serious but stable condition. – came from a planned Russian Mafia hit is not from the mouth of some god.

No one outside of your government’s intelligent spy apparatus, the CIA, NSA, HLS, etc, would have access to such information. Michelle, I would suggest that your blog has been infiltrated by your government’s secret spy agencies and they are using the persona of “Howie” to spread negative propaganda about Russia around the world.

  24. Al Says:

Unless one is applying for acceptance to a college or university, High School GPA’s really don’t mean much in the real world of work and business salaries.
It is still clear that women are at a disadvantage based on gender and in many cases, it is a woman who holds a corporation together.
Are these important, often irreplaceable women fairly compensated?

  25. Michelle Moquin's "A day in the life of…" » Blog Archive » Israel Finds Hamas Are No Longer Amateur Fighters Says:

[…] Darrel: I suppose you are correct. I’m just frustrated and angry that this is happening so much and not much is being done about it. And the thugs that act this way know that, so they basically get away with it. What about the recent where the man was killed after the cop held him in a chokehold (an illegal maneuver)? The man being choked repeatedly said, “Can’t breathe.” When does it stop? Thanks for commenting. […]
