Living While Black

Good morning!

This write says it all.

From CNN:

Why I fear for my sons

Editor’s note: Kimberly Norwood is a law professor at the Washington University School of Law and editor and co-contributor of “Color Matters: Skin Tone Bias and the Myth of a Post Racial America.” The opinions in this commentary are solely those of the writer.

(CNN) – I am a 54-year-old black woman — a mother, lawyer and law professor. I teach at the Washington University in St. Louis Law School and live 12 miles away from Ferguson, Missouri.

The median household income in my suburb is $85,000 per year. In Ferguson, it is $36,000. In my suburb, 3.5% of the people are black. In Ferguson, almost 70% are black. These are stark contrasts. Yet I share things in common with black people in Ferguson and, indeed, throughout the United States.

Kimberly Norwood
Kimberly Norwood

When I shop, I’m often either ignored as a waste of time or scrutinized as a potential shoplifter. In June, my daughter and I walked into the china and crystal department at a Macy’s department store. I was about to speak to the salesperson directly in front of me. She walked right past me to welcome the white woman behind us.

My daughter looked at me and said: “Really? Did she just ignore us?” My daughter is a young teenager at the crossroads of “skin color doesn’t matter” and “oh yes, it does.” She is in transition. I felt hurt, anger and embarrassment.

But this kind of encounter happens routinely.

Driving, I tend to have a bit of a lead foot — hitting 45 in a 35 mph zone. The few times I have been stopped in my suburb, the first question I’m asked is whether I live “around here.” Not one of my white friends has been asked that question when they were pulled over by a police officer.

Last summer, my teenage daughter was shopping with four white friends at a mall in an affluent St. Louis suburb. As they left the store, two mall security guards approached my daughter. They told her the store had called them and reported her as a shoplifter, and asked her to come with them. After a search, they found she had nothing. So far in her young life, mall security guards have stopped her on suspicion of shoplifting three times. Each time she was innocent.

I also have three sons. My two oldest are 22. They are 6-foot-5 and 6-foot-4 and each weighs more than 220 pounds. One recently graduated from college; the other will graduate in 2015. The youngest is 13. All three like to wear jeans and the latest sneakers. They love hoodies. They like looking cool. These three young men have never been arrested or even been in a fight at school.

Every time my sons leave the house, I worry about their safety. One of my sons loves to go out at night to clubs. I worry about potential unrest at the clubs — yes, black-on-black crime is a problem, and despite what many people think, black people complain about it all the time in their communities and churches and in newspapers and on radio stations.

I also worry about his drive home and his being stopped by police.

The data in Ferguson are an example of the larger picture in the St. Louis County area. Police stop, search and arrest black people at a disproportionate rate, even though they are less likely to possess contraband than white people.

This son of mine who likes to go out at night is big and tall and he has brown skin. He graduated from college in May but cannot find employment. He is an intelligent, clean-cut young man.

But the negative stereotypes automatically assigned to his skin color follow him everywhere, even in job interviews, like extra weight. It reminds me of the airline employee who asks before you can check your suitcase: Did a stranger ask you to carry something or pack your bag? In my son’s case, the answer is yes. He is carrying extra weight, unfairly, and without his knowledge or consent, packed in his luggage.

A few years ago my husband and I went on a cruise. My older boys were teenagers at the time and were taking summer enrichment classes at a school about a mile from our home. They planned to walk to school in the morning. At the top of a long list of things to do before we left for our trip was “e-mail chief of police.”

I explained to the chief that my husband and I were going on a cruise, I was a member of the community and that my two sons would be walking to school. I attached pictures of the boys, explaining that only a couple of black families lived in the neighborhood. My sons did not normally walk in the neighborhood, so they would draw attention.

I offered to bring my sons to the police department so officers could meet them. The police chief and I met and all went well.

But I’ve asked myself: How many parents of white sons have thought to add to their to-do-before-leaving-town list, “Write letter to local police department, introducing sons and attaching photos, so police do not become suspicious and harass them”?

Even though my older boys are men, I still worry about them. I worry about my 13-year-old. This worry is a stressful, and sadly normal, part of my daily existence. My youngest will be 6 feet tall in the coming weeks. He has brown skin.

These young black men have arrows pointed and ready to shoot at them daily — black-on-black crime, police encounters, societal bias and mistrust. Shortly after the Michael Brown shooting, I met with a group of my 13-year-old’s black male friends to explain to them what happened in Ferguson, and what to do and how to respond if they are ever stopped by the police. My words reminded me of stories and fears my grandfather used to share with me about his encounters with police during the Jim Crow era.

These are just a few of the many ways in which people in America are treated differently based on the color of their skin. This has been going on for a long time. I hope the events in Ferguson will encourage people to see the stark differences in the experiences of black people — not just black people who struggle economically but also black people like me — and white people as they go about their routine, daily lives.

*****

Readers: If you ever think that you have it hard, you have no idea how hard it is to be a black person just trying to live a “normal” every day life. A black person’s “normal” is far different from a white person’s “normal.”

I can say over and over again, “Have some compassion for your fellow world citizens and step into their shoes before you judge,” but I know that’s not enough. It’s not enough to have compassion because racism rears its ugly obstinate head higher and stronger…and at this point, it’s winning.

What’s the solution? In my opinion, it’s going to take perseverance from many, and more likely a demographic change, for racism to end.

Thoughts? It’s Friday…start flapping. Blog me.

Every OTW mother in America fears for her sons when they encounter thugs with badges. But I understand the especial fear the mother of a black child must have. It is easy to see that white cops in America believe they can kill black males without having to answer in any way for their brutality or murder of your sons.

    God be with you all.

    Sonja

I hate to say this but I truly believe that it won’t stop until blacks start taking the law into their own hands and killing the murders that the white justice system lets off.

Another reason to be glad we have that Black Guy in the White House.

The United States now accounts for 10 percent of the world’s oil production. As it sharply curtails imports from countries like Angola and Nigeria, those producers are then compelled to sell their oil to China and other Asian markets at steep discounts, compounding the impact of American production on world markets.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration said U.S. oil production should hit 9.6 million barrels per day before 2020, the highest level in more than 40 years. Most of the increase in production comes from so-called tight oil formations and EIA said production trends should continue into the next decade. (Related Article: What Happens After the Boom?)

Green said the spread between the price of West Texas Intermediate crude oil, the U.S. benchmark, and Brent, the global benchmark, has been higher than usual at least since February 2012. That means there’s an abundance of cheaper oil at home, which makes the U.S. energy market look good compared with the rest of the world.

Nevertheless, market factors beyond the U.S. border are keeping gasoline prices high, relatively speaking. When adjusted for inflation, the $2.09 per gallon reported as a national average this week in 2009 would be $2.29 today. Green said prices are so much more expensive now because demand for energy is increasing in China and other developing nations, which makes oil prices rise in response. (Related Article: Spring Fever Could Lead to Increase in Gas Demand)

For U.S. consumers then, AAA said gasoline prices are still considered too expensive despite the shale boom. AAA data show more than half of the people in the country consider $3.50 too much to pay for a gallon of gasoline.

The U.S. and Canada are displacing OPEC as the driver of global oil supply growth. Analysts say that means we’re closer to energy independence than we’ve been in decades.

“These results show that despite the increase in domestic production, prices still have not dropped to as low as most people in the public would expect and want,” Green said.
The reason is simple. The 1% that control our energy have a monopoly and as long as they have the republicans in their pockets they won’t have to lower oil prices much, if at all.

The greed of the 1% knows no bounds. Soon you will hear arguments to allow the greedy bastards to sell crude oil in the international market. If the republicans allow that your price at the pump could go to more than $5.00 a gallon because the 1% will be selling the crude that should go to Americans first to the highest bidders abroad.
You will have to compete with the world market at the pump. So far that hasn’t happen because they can’t sell crude oil outside of the US. Federal law allows the export of gasoline, diesel and other refined products, but not crude oil. That ban began in 1975, after the Arab oil embargo. It continues to this day.

You had better believe that the 1% is busy gearing up to convince the american people that what is best for their profits is best for you. You will all kinds of arguments without the ability to sell crude oil abroad Americans will some how suffer. When in reality if they are allowed to do so Americans will experience a huge jump in the price of a gallon of gas at the pump and a huge jump in energy prices across the board.

Already we are being told that gasoline may not seem cheap these days, but it’s a relative bargain. America needs to keep conserving and producing energy to keep those costs in check. When in reality the cost of the most expensive premium at the pump should be no more than $2.09 at the pump.

Why are you paying at least a $1.80 more at the pump? Monopolies can gouge at will that’s why. By putting a few million in the pockets of politicians, the 1% gets to make $billions in profits from jacking up the energy cost to their fellow Americans

  4. Daisy Says:

Some more crazy racist whites are showing their ignorants again. Representatives of two counties in far Northern California are petitioning state lawmakers for the right to form a 51st state called Jefferson.

Modoc and Siskiyou counties have a combined population of about 53,000. Modoc is about 89% white and Siskiyou is about 91% white. They submitted petitions from their county governments to the secretaries of the state Assembly and Senate on Thursday.

They want to keep any new OTWs from locating in the area and if possible get rid of all the OTWs but it’s 3.5% Native Americans. They feel that if they can get statehood they can put out that this is a white man’s state and with the vote keep it that way.

John Walker thought the federal government was going to parole him this year as they promised. Anonz learned that he was planning to sneak away to Russia. Putin had arranged to bring him there to be with Snowden to give the US another black eye and to show the world that he doesn’t fear the US or Obama.
    ————————————
John Walker ran a father and son spy ring, passing classified material to the Soviet Union from 1967 to 1985. Walker was a Navy communication specialist with financial difficulties when he walked into the Soviet Embassy and sold a piece of cyphering equipment.

Navy and Defense officials said that Walker enabled the Soviet Union to unscramble military communications and pinpoint the location of U.S. submarines at all times. As part of his plea deal, prosecutors promised leniency for Walker’s son Michael Walker, a former Navy seaman. AnonZ was especially angry because some of the 187 spies and the more than 2,000 Russians that were killed because of the information given by the Walkers were relatives or friends of his associates. He promised them, he would wait until John Walker came up for parole before making his suffer and die.

AnonZ had him executed with extreme pain. The rumor is that Draneo was involved.

  9. Health Info Says:

Light Therapy a Good Option for Pre-Cancerous Skin Lesions, Study Says

WEDNESDAY, Aug. 27, 2014 (HealthDay News) — Treating pre-cancerous skin spots with a type of light therapy may be more effective than the usual therapy — freezing the lesions with liquid nitrogen, a new study suggests.

Rough, scaly spots, called actinic keratoses, are often found on the scalp and face of people with fair complexions who’ve had a lot of sun exposure.

This review of prior research found that people who underwent the light treatment — called photodynamic therapy — were 14 percent more likely to have the lesion completely cleared three months later than those who had the freezing treatment known as cryotherapy.

Photodynamic therapy “is associated with better outcomes,” said Dr. Daniel Eisen, the study’s lead author. “It’s a relatively new treatment. Freezing has been done for decades.”

Eisen, director of aesthetic dermatology at the University of California, Davis Health System, said photodynamic therapy involves placing a light-sensitive liquid medication on a patient’s skin. The doctor shines a special light on the area, which activates the drug, killing the cells of the lesion.

He doesn’t think that photodynamic therapy will replace other treatments, however. “It’s going to be an additional option,” he said.
The treatment might be a good alternative for people who have 20 or 30 lesions, he said, since photodynamic therapy can treat them all at once, while cryotherapy deals with each lesion individually.

The report was published online Aug. 27 in JAMA Dermatology.
Dr. Harvey Lui, a Canadian dermatologist, is less of a fan of photodynamic therapy, which is also known as PDT.

“There are economic barriers, barriers related to the tolerability of the treatment, and barriers because the treatment is time consuming,” said Lui, head of dermatology and skin science at the University of British Columbia and co-author of an accompanying journal editorial.

Insurance coverage for photodynamic therapy is spotty, with some insurers covering it and others not, he explained. Photodynamic therapy is, however, covered by Medicare, the publicly funded insurance program for the elderly in the United States.
Photodynamic therapy also takes hours longer than cryotherapy, Lui said. “You have to apply the medication, have the patient wait and then shine the light on the skin. You stack that up against cryotherapy where I dispense liquid nitrogen on the lesion and I’m finished,” he said.

Also, photodynamic therapy “hurts when we activate the medication,” he said. “It seems for many patients, the pain is much more than what they experience with cryotherapy.”
Lui thinks a better, less expensive and less painful way of using the treatment is to apply the medication and let patients expose themselves to sunlight, which will activate the drug.

“We can use sunlight to treat a disease that was caused by sun exposure,” Lui said.
Dr. Jeffrey Salomon, an assistant clinical professor of plastic surgery at Yale University School of Medicine, said photodynamic therapy might also be an improvement on topical chemotherapy. This treatment — placing an anti-cancer medication on the skin lesions — “remains a workhorse for the treatment of skin with areas of actinic keratoses,” he said.
But the crusty wounds it causes can be unsightly for more than a month, he said. Photodynamic therapy “would be a welcomed treatment from that standpoint, as the downtime would be less,” he said.

For isolated actinic keratoses, Salomon said, almost anything works: laser, liquid nitrogen or a surgical shave.

“That being said, the recurrence of lesions is expected in the majority of patients with any of the treatments, due to sun damage to their entire exposed skin. These patients all require regular surveillance for new or recurrent lesions,” he said.

For the study, Eisen and colleagues analyzed four studies that compared photodynamic therapy with cryotherapy. These studies included 641 patients with a total of more than 2,000 lesions treated with cryotherapy and more than 2,000 treated with photodynamic therapy.

  10. From the Desk of Nancy Pelosi Says:

Women’s Equality Day celebrates an American victory – extending voting rights to America’s mothers, sisters, and daughters with the ratification of the 19th Amendment. Women fought, marched, sacrificed, demanded, and were imprisoned for the right to vote – and we must honor their strength and sacrifice.

To commemorate Women’s Equality Day, I was proud to join with Congresswoman Eshoo and community leaders at the San Francisco Women’s Building – the first woman-owned and operated community center in the country – and reflect on the strides our nation has made towards women’s equality and acknowledge the work that remains to ensure that every woman is afforded the opportunities to reach her full potential.

Across the country, House Democrats are raising the drumbeat for our Middle Class Jumpstart action plan to put America’s families first by promoting job creation, increasing accessibility to affordable education, and at the center of our initiative, increasing opportunities for women with our agenda, When Women Succeed, America Succeeds.
Although nearly a century has passed since women gained the right to vote, women on average still earn only 77 cents for every dollar earned by men. Working mothers face an uphill battle in finding affordable, quality child care. Nationally more than 80 percent of low-wage workers do not have a single paid sick day. Women’s reproductive rights are increasingly coming under attack with House Republicans’ attempts to defund Planned Parenthood and the Supreme Court’s deeply misguided Hobby Lobby decision. We need to fix this.

Women deserve equality in the workplace, security at home, and access to affordable child care and health care. Your ideas and voices are vital to every policy discussion in our nation. You have the power to make progress in our continued fight for equality. Make your voice heard. Share your story.

    Earthquake Preparation
The recent earthquake in Napa reminds us of the strength in coming together as a community to offer food, shelter, and comfort to those affected in their time of need. We are reminded that after a natural disaster, it may be several days before vital services, like electricity and running water, are restored, and the importance of having an emergency plan in place for you and your loved ones.

With the help of SF72, San Francisco’s hub for emergency preparedness, you can sign up to receive updates and information should an emergency occur. You can also find out how to prepare for an emergency and make an emergency plan. Feel free to take a look at the useful tips below on how to best protect yourself and your loved ones should an earthquake occur.

    Earthquake Emergency Preparedness
Choose a safe place in every room — under a sturdy table or desk or against an inside wall where nothing can fall on you
Practice DROP, COVER, AND HOLD ON. Drop under a sturdy desk or table, hold on, and protect your eyes by pressing your face against your arm. If there’s no table or desk nearby, sit on the floor against an interior wall away from windows, bookcases, or tall furniture that could fall on you.
    Choose an out-of-town family contact.
Make sure you have a fire extinguisher in your home.
If you have children, inform babysitters and caregivers of your plan.
Be prepared to be without electricity, gas, water and telephones for up to three days. Have supplies on-hand including:
First aid kit and essential medications.
    Canned food and can opener.
At least three gallons of water per person.
Battery-powered radio, flashlight, and extra batteries.
Special items for infant, elderly, or disabled family members.

Michelle, I heard a rumor that you must have set Madaline to work at the polls. It seems that some are claiming that your influence could give the Dems women to replace men in Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, and North Carolina.

If you have that power, and it comes to be that you steal those staunchly republican strongholds from the republicans, if I were you I would duck or get Madaline to pull guard because some very pissed off billionaires who are spending upwards of $400,000,000 to make significant gains in the House and take back the Senate will be turning that money and the corruption and mischief it can purchase against you.

You could of course send Madaline to knock off a few and being the cowards they are, they would back WAY off. I can’t wait to see if you take those southern states from them.

No need to reply. I am not telling tales out of school by bringing this up. It is wide spread that something or someone is behind the surge that seems to be coming despite the voter rigging, gerrymandering, voter suppression and outright stealing of votes they have in the works.

My hats off to the both of you if you can pull it off.

So folks, those of you rooting for the good guys keep an eye on the votes in those states. If the Dems can hold on to their seats and Michelle gives us 4 or 5 more, look out world here comes the REAL Obama.

  13. Lacy Says:

I was so distraught when I saw the news special about the 8 year old girl accidentally killing her gun instructor. My husband takes our 3 10, 8, and 6 to the gun range all the time. He is obsessed with the idea that a urban war is coming and we have to be prepared to kill the marauding niggers.

I just am appalled that we can insist that 5,6, and 8 year children can handle guns but not information about their bodies. My children repeat the mantra they have been told at those gun ranges – “don’t point your gun at anything you do not intend to kill or destroy.” but they can’t be expected to handle being able to know when they are being sexually exploited.

My little girl will know more about guns than she will about getting pregnant. No one seems to know that something is wrong with that picture.

  14. Vivian Says:

Yes, and so many of those tiny penis gun nuts are child molesters. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/08/28/will-hayden_n_5731446.html

Gun Company Cuts Ties With ‘Sons Of Guns’ Star Will Hayden
    Associated

The star of this discovery channel Will Hayden has been raping an11 year old girl for months. “The report says Hayden coerced the victim into silence with threats of physical abuse.

“Don’t tell them nothing because I’m all you’ve got,” the affidavit says the 49-year-old Hayden told the victim.” So of course they don’t want them knowing anything about their bodies.

  15. Roberta Says:

Most white men prefer teaching their children how to take lives than how to bring lives into this world.

  16. Mike,TM Says:

Dick Gregory was caught taking money from those rich republican billionaires to attack Obama. His show was so surprised when the FBI pointed out that he could be prosecuted for income tax evasion and it would come out.

So they fired him on the spot and paid him not to come near the show again. Yes, Virginia crime not only pays, it pays very well. It is rumored he was paid $4,000,000 to get the fuck out.

  17. Scott Says:

Hypocrisy rears its head again. When Bush and cheney were water boarding their prisoners at Guantanomo Bay none of the mainstream media were calling it torture. But now that ISIS is doing it to their captives like James Foley they are freely calling water boarding torture.

Thank you Bush and Cheney for teaching the bad guys how to be meaner. It doesn’t bother you because you and yours won’t be anywhere near any ISIS unless we get lucky and one comes by your house.

Let’s hope they don’t water board you before they blow your ass the fuck up. James Foley and the rest of those who get and are being subjected to water boarding have your torturing asses to thank for it.

And the media is culpable because they sat on their do nothing asses and allowed you to get away with it. What the heck, they were only OTWs you were torturing, eh, water boarding.

  18. Mindy Says:

Speaking of bringing life into this world, Vivian, A federal judge in Austin struck down part of a Texas law that would have required all abortion clinics in the state to meet the same standards as outpatient surgical centers. The regulation, which was set to go into effect Monday, would have shuttered about a dozen abortion clinics, leaving only eight places in Texas to get a legal abortion — all in major cities.

Judge Lee Yeakel ruled late Friday afternoon that the state’s regulation was unconstitutional and would have placed an undue burden on women, particularly on poor and rural women living in west Texas and the Rio Grande Valley.

Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott, a Republican running for governor, immediately filed an appeal with the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

Go to the polls ladies and get those republican shits out. I do hope what I am reading about you Michelle is true and you have a way to help this country.

  19. Eric Says:

    This is scary:
“The Obama administration’s new appeal to Russian public opinion probably reflects growing doubt that the U.S. can bring Putin to the negotiating table over Ukraine, as the Kremlin leader wages his own campaign designed to stoke Russians’ nationalist pride and nostalgia for its the lost superpower status.

“Thank God, I think no one is thinking of unleashing a large-scale conflict with Russia. I want to remind you that Russia is one of the leading nuclear powers,” Putin said during a visit to a Kremlin-sponsored youth camp, clearly aiming to marshal public support for a military campaign that has brought international isolation and increasingly stringent economic sanctions.

Obama on Thursday warned that stricter sanctions would be forthcoming after NATO released satellite surveillance images showing Russian armored columns crossing into southeastern Ukraine.” http://touch.latimes.com/#section/-1/article/p2p-81216334/

John Walker Jr., a former American sailor convicted during the Cold War of leading a family spy ring for the Soviet Union, has died in a prison hospital in North Carolina, officials said Friday.

He died Thursday at the Federal Medical Center in Butner, Federal Bureau of Prisons spokesman Chris Burke told the Los Angeles Times via email. Prison officials did not release a cause of death, and the North Carolina Medical Examiner’s office had no immediate information on the cause of death. He was 77.

I guess the cancer of the throat could alibi the Drano in the throat damage.

But don’t you find it telling that all these serous traitors to America are white men? The same white men who claim to love it so much, they need the 2nd Amendment to protect it.
    —————–
“Walker was considered the ringleader of a spy ring that authorities at the time said was among the most damaging in U.S. history.

His brother Arthur J. Walker, who made $12,000 for selling classified documents to Soviet agents through John, died in the same federal prison in Butner, N.C., in July. He was 79.

John Walker Jr. was said to have throat cancer. He was set to be released in May, according to federal authorities.

When the family espionage ring was uncovered, John Walker Jr. was cast by authorities as its amoral mastermind, a manipulator who got his son, Michael, his older brother, Arthur, and his best friend, Jerry Whitworth, to join him.”

Damn, I’d hate to see what they would do if they didn’t love America.

  21. Sherman Says:

Robert I#12, No, you are not talking out of school. As a matter of fact many of my friends here in Georgia are starting to believe in little green men. But all those gains you are talking about will come —- if they come—– in the Senate.

Many of the die hard racists are bristling at the thought of little green men saving that N in the White House. Don’t be surprised if we don’t have some home grown jihadists chasing Obama. The racists are certainly not above murder to get their way.

If there is a way for Michelle to help, I would like to suggest she work on the House. It is there that the most sleaziest elements of the republican party are at work. They have no shame and no fear of the law when they steal votes by gerrymandering districts so obviously biased as to defy any other conclusion.

But the bought and paid for judges and the racist legislators just keep on coming up with more and more restrictive ways to steal house seats. If not for this type of gerrymandering Obama would have a majority control over the House.

Yet, you have the white media reluctant to call it what it is. Stealing seats by gerrymandering and slicing up their states to give them solid republican control over the House.
