Republicans Unanimously Block Equal Pay Bill

Republicans Unanimously Block Equal Pay Bill

After allowing the Paycheck Fairness Act to move forward last week, Senate Republicans turned around on Monday evening and unanimously voted to block the bill, which would ban salary secrecy and tighten rules to try to narrow the gender wage gap.

The vote came weeks after the Republican National Committee claimed that “All Republicans support equal pay.” Senate Republicans have unanimouslyshot the bill down multiple times over the past four years.

The bill includes a number of provisions aimed at preventing the gender wage gap in the first place, which currently means a woman who works full time, year round makes 77 percent of what a similar man makes and hasn’t budged in a decade.

It would ban salary secrecy, in which employers prohibit or strongly discourage employees from discussing pay with each other, thus making it difficult for women to discover unequal practices. While it’s illegal to tell workers they can’t talk about wages with each other without a business justification, since it infringes on the right to engage in concerted activities for mutual aid, it’s still widespread: about half of private sector workers say they can’t talk about pay at work. But in workplaces without this practice, the wage gap shrinks. Among the federal workforce, where pay scales are usually transparent, the wage gap has fallen significantly over the past 20 years. It’s also falling among unionized workers, who similarly tend to have wage transparency.

The Paycheck Fairness Act would also narrow the definitions of what is considered a legitimate business-related justification for pay disparities between a man and a woman with the same skills, responsibilities, and working conditions, while increasing penalties for those who are found to have no reason for gaps. It’s meant to discourage unequal pay scales so that women don’t have to remedy situations by bringing lawsuits, which are time consuming, costly, and increasingly difficult to win.

Republicans say they are in favor of equal pay for women’s work, but they haven’t articulated their alternatives to the Democrats’ bill. Instead they say women are already protected and argue that the gap isn’t as big as the statistics say. But while it’s true that many factors go into the gender wage gap, it can’t be explained away and discrimination is likely at least partly to blame.

*****

Readers: I really don’t get it. I am so sick of the repubs claiming one thing and their actions don’t backup their claims. What woman in her right mind would vote for men who block a bill that would narrow the gender wage gap? If that language is too confusing for you, please tell me why you would vote for men who are not in favor of equal pay for women’s work. Really…I want to know. Blog me.

Speaking of women…

Let me address the NFL and the player’s abuse of women. Fifty Six players have been arrested for domestic violence since Roger Goodell became the commissioner.  And of the fifty six arrested only 13 were suspended from games in total. Some of the players didn’t get any penalties…some only got fines. This is really disgusting.

In my opinion, if we are going to take a hard stance on domestic violence, these players need to be suspended from the NFL indefinitely. The ramifications need to be strict enough that they won’t even consider raising a hand…and the way to hit ‘em hard is in their wallet – take their million dollar contracts away and perhaps they’ll limit the beating up of others where there is a level playing field. (no pun intended.)

Goodell has basically given these players a license to abuse when there are hardly any consequences for acts of domestic violence. Rep. Jackie Speier calls on Goodell to resign, and I couldn’t agree with her more. But he won’t. He made a cool 44 million last year. There is no way he s going to give up that pay.

As Rep Jackie Spier said, “It is really all about money.” Yep. Again, I couldn’t agree more. Meanwhile women’s lives are in danger because the dollar is more important than the well-being of women. That’s what their actions are saying when domestic violence is prevalent, and nothing is being done to stop it.  How many more women need to be abused before this is taken seriously?

John:  Perhaps before you address the article you should actually read the article. The couple you are referring to is not the couple that is in the write that I posted. Just saying…

And even if it was, who cares? Lots of people have sex in the open. If it was between two white people we wouldn’t be having this conversation and you wouldn’t come to the assumption that the woman was a prostitute. It is because the sex is happening between a white man and a black woman, that you say “…it’s not out of normal thinking to assumeshe might have been a prostitute.“ What you’re assuming, and what you think is “normal” to assume, is that no white man would have sex with a black woman unless she was a prostitute. You’re racist. Just saying.

I guess I am not the only only thinking this as I just read Morris’ comment.

Done for the day. Your turn. Blog me.

Thank you Michelle for speaking up to that 1/3 of the white race, like, John#15;September 17th, 2014 at 1:12 pm, that may not be practicing racists, but whose attitudes and bigoted thinking allow the 1/3 who are outright racists to get away with their cruelty to OTWs.

I am the wife of Morris. We have been married for 21 years. We still get harassed or annoyed by racist attitudes, stereotyping, cruel insensitive remarks, and police harassment when we are in public.

It is so white of that race to expect blacks to just accept their disgusting behavior towards us. If they have to live in their own country 24/7 under those conditions, they would be talking revolution.

Frankly Alycedale’s attitude is the most appealing to me right now. We need to get the attitude of my mentor in the 60′s, Stokely Carmichael, who said at the time. “if a white man hits me, I’m going to kill him before God get’s the news.”

Whites in America control the history of this country so he as been regulated to the dungeons of the civil rights movement. But it was his stirring call to black men to take up arms to white brutality that really forced whites to come to terms.

The leaders of the country back then were trying to counter the gains the Russians were making in the Middle East and other OTW countries. They were afraid of what the Russian media would do with visual news casts showing whites in battle with heavily out numbered blacks fighting for equality and resisting bodily harm by retaliating in kind.

Up until black leaders like Stokely Carmichael and Malcolm X began urging blacks to fight physical assaults with physical assaults, whites were content with beating the fuck out of the followers of MLK and killing any black that didn’t accept white rule as the status quo.

Whites don’t want blacks to know that physical resistance is what it takes to get their attention and to force them to change their racist ways.

We need to go back to the old days. When a racist white cop murders an unarmed black man, we need to kill the bastard on the spot. If the numbers prevent it then, we need to bide our time and kill the bastard when we can.

Two thirds of the white race are gonna allow racists cops to continue to brutalize and murder OTWs unless we as OTWs take justice in our own hands.

Alycedale is the Rosa Parks of her day. We need to listen and start to take justice in our own hands.

  2. Morris Says:

Thank you my beloved darling, Lois#1, but you made one typo we have been married for 41 years. Everyone has been wonderful. I love you more today than I did when I saw you staring defiantly at us whites looking on as a cop was dragging you handcuffed toward a petty wagon.

You had ketchup, mustard, sugar, salt and I don’t remember what else my sister washed out of your hair the following day and blood all over your buttocks, knees and legs from being dragged, but you looked like a princess who would not be cowered.

It may not have been the most auspicious to meet the woman of your dreams, but I will remember the feeling it awakened in me forever. I love you dearest.

I was so scared that you and your race had to endure horrendous acts of violence over and over again by white cops bent on delivering as much pain and destruction to your bodies as they could short of outright killing them.

  3. Janet Says:

Why white women continue to support those misogynistic republicans is so frustrating. Zen Lill can you offer an explanation.

  4. Zen Lill Says:

Luie, fyi THC is amplified by almost 8x’s by going thru your digestive system rather than your lungs, that’s why dosing is important, ever hear the hysterical video about the cop who od’d and called 911 … *smile* hilarious ….

Janet, it’s bc they are deeply inculcated from early upbringing through religion (high percentage of rethugs are christians) and believe that men run the show, abortion is killing a baby (but killing a doctor who chooses to serve the poverty stricken women who need them is OK) – and rethug ladies, I must say, come out of the chitchat at your next mixed gathering and talk politics/religion, a lot of women do leave men to talk amongst themselves leaving their goofies to believe that they have no interest or that it’s man talk … just sayin’

On that #15 John thing, wrong couple and this is about your video: someone in that building called about a ‘lewd act’ – oh please – at 2:30 in the afternoon if I looked out the window and saw 2 people having at it, I would be watching, giggling and maybe saying, damn babies(!), but I would def not call the cops … why would you do that … were there little kids in that office building? (no)

& Cops always overstep when it comes to pulling OTW and women over – and oh hell, if you’re a black man with a good looking white woman, just count on it … they can’t wait to give you a lesson for stealing one of ‘us’…(gagging right now)

    Luv, Zen Lill

  5. Mabel Says:

The republicans know that some whites are so bigoted and racist that it doesn’t matter what they do or don’t do. Those whites will vote color and for them against any OTW or any democrat that follows Obama.

This country will not change until the demographics in this country change. The change that made white women the majority voter is useless. They are as stupid as a living human being can be and still claim to be a member of the human race.

White men treat white women like chattel. They are only important for keeping white men in power.

Actually they don’t deserve equality. They are idiots! Of course that leaves the rest of us females with the short end of the stick.

But we just have to be realistic and wait with our OTW men for that demographics change.

  6. Debra Says:

If you look at the news the polls say that the women gap has narrowed to 1 point. White women don’t care about this issue of equality.

They are voting color with their men. No real change with occur in this country until their is a demographic change.

I am a white woman, we have failed this country.

  7. Paula Says:

My sister had personal experience with taking on a job after a man had a heart attack. They gave her a male to train as her assistant.

When she found out the man whom she was replacing wasn’t coming back….she asked for the job permanently. They hired her assistant for the job and told her he needed the job more than her as he was married and she was not. Don’t spew your GOP rhetoric. I’m glad the Republicans revealed themselves.

There is no way I would vote Republican based on discrimination. They’ve voted against the minimum wage and continue to destroy the middleclass while they do everything possible to redistribute the wealth from the poor to the rich. I will do everything possible to work against them in 2014.

  8. Juanita Says:

If women didn’t have the vote, there’d be a lot less available. But is is so true that as long as we women need the white female vote to achieve the next step towards equlity, it ain’t happening.

  9. Mike Says:

This makes it impossible for the Republicans to deny they are waging war on women. They have abandoned the women’s vote by displaying gender hatred and with their ethnic hatred and class hatred openly on display, who the heck is supposed to vote for them? Only the chumps and dimwits, let’s hope they are few.

  10. Bob Says:

How can anyone of any gender, age or ethnicity if they are not a bigot or idiot or 1% vote for a Republican? I is a corporate party

That party is very clear on who they care about and work for—and working people don’t make the cut. We are not in that special club of the very wealthy and therefore we don’t count.

Actually the young are the ones that are being hurt the most by this totally corrupt party. I hope enough voters will rise up to lead the rebellion to change our government into a true democracy where the government works for all of us.

  11. Greg Says:

How about this? I hear there is a white boy hunting cops. Irony, huh.

  12. Roland Says:

Mike#9, It is possible to deny that republicans are waging a war on women if you understand what this proposed law would mean.

Ok, I will rant like you and others I have read on this site. How could anyone ever vote for a democrat? All they do is lie about racism and inequality and this silly war on women in order to divide us.

They rely on working up people’s emotions with no regard to facts or the truth, in order to create a more socialistic society that they believe will be a paradise. They allow their leaders to buy their votes with these false promises, that they can have everything they want and it is the fault of the wealthy that they don’t have it.

Many resent that some have worked and have more than they do and democrats take advantage of this resentment to make outrageous hateful accusations that just aren’t true.

Note how conservatives think liberals are misguided and liberals think conservatives are evil. How could anyone ever vote for a democratic party with such dirty underhanded tactics?

  13. Ski man Says:

On President Obama’s inaguration day Mitch McConnell met with fellow republicans in the Library of Congress to state that the #1 priority of the republican party was to make President Obama a one term president.

Not the economy (which the republicans had brought to the brink of disaster.)

Not the environment (which the republicans have continually underminded in favor of their fossil fuel billionaire buddies).

And not JOBS (which the republicans had litigated overseas)
For this, every single republican should be tried for treason. NO ONE should put their party ahead of their country.

  14. Beatriz Says:

Honesty I believe nothing will change until white women change. Someone needs to find a way to reach those airheads.

  15. Carla Says:

You people claim that republicans invented Gerrymandering. Well, not exactly. Today’s Republican Party didn’t write the book on gerrymandering. That honor goes to one Elbridge Gerry, Governor of Massachusetts, in 1812. Ironically, he was a member of the Democratic-Repu blican party :) “The term gerrymander was inspired by an 1812 Massachusetts redistricting scheme that favored the party of Governor Elbridge Gerry. Portraitist Gilbert C.

Stuart noted that one new election district had the shape of a salamander. Stuart drew an outline of the district, put a salamander’s head on one end, and called the creature a Gerrymander.”*

Many factions latched on to the word Republican. However, that doesn’t mean that any of them were the ideological or organizational forebear of the Republican Party of today.

To complicate things even further, the Democratic-Republican party was consistently referred to by contemporaries (and historians) as the Republican party so when you see charts labeling a person a Republican in the years 1800-1830, they aren’t our modern day Republicans but rather Democratic-Republicans.

  17. Rivera Says:

The Rethuglican and now the Tea-buggers’ Reactionary dirty tricks machine wrote the book on slanderous lying, gerrymandering voting districts, anti-populist legislation, fragmentation of the nation, and stifling of progress.

The modus operandi for most of the last half of the 20th Century and all of this one, is the Republican party’s attempts to take the nation back to a feudalist state with a few Kingmakers and Oligarchs backed by an overweening Military calling the shots, like many of the Banana Republics it has created elsewhere.

That’s the difference between “Reactionary” and reasonably rational “Conservative” -a seemingly dying breed with which one could at least have a stimulating, even rewarding debate.

  18. Daniel Says:

Greg#11, the name of that “white boy” is Eric Matthew Frien. I bet white America will be much more understanding of why he is hunting cops.

While they have carte blanche to brutalize and murder OTWs, they know that any aberrant behavior towards whites has serious repercussions.

    Go get them Eric!

  19. Kami Says:

I don’t see any progress for women as long as white women hold the majority vote in our group. I am one of 6 OTW women in a company with 38 women.

We all hang out with each other from time to time. We discuss the unequal pay that we get compared to the men. Most of the white women don’t have a clue.

They rant verbatim that stuff you hear on fox. It is so apparent that they don’t get it.

  20. Itzel Says:

Howie, hello from Israel. How is our favorite son doing?

  21. Heidi Says:

The Republican and now the Tea-buggers’ Reactionary dirty tricks machine wrote the book on slanderous lying, gerrymandering voting districts…

  22. Parker Says:

I’m just loving this Pennsylvania thing. Cops on the run for a change.

Eric if you are out there. We will hide you and supply you with all the guns and ammo you need.

  23. Tayler Says:

Eric may the force be with as you take out a little more of the force.

  24. Santino Says:

Loving this running scared bad ass cops thing. Icing on the cake, It’s an armed white boy scarring the bad ass cops.

    Poetic justice.

  25. Marcelino Says:

Hey cops while you are fucking with us OTWs, it seems that your own race is fucking with you.

I can’t decide which white boy I wish the most support to. Eric Matthew Frien may your aim be true and many.

  26. Jamil Says:

One things for certain. White cops won’t be stopping white boys to check to see if Eric is in the car.

You just don’t profile whites in this country. So hey may Allah be with you Eric.
