No Dessert For Trump

Good morning.

Readers: Until there are stricter gun laws prohibiting the sale of these unnecessary war guns, assault weapons…whatever you want to call them, the death toll will rise. Currently, we are only putting a bandaid on the issue and not getting to the source of the problem. But we all know that, don’t we? Well most of us do. For those of you who spout out that no laws need to change, I know, and you know, that if something happened to you or yours your words would be much different.

So sad for the victims and their families. Live and let live. Why is that such a problem for so many?

If we learned anything in 2014 by the Dems not showing up at the midterm election (That’s a nod to you, Helena 1), let’s HOPE we don’t make the same mistake again. Voting for the president is one thing. Making sure she has the Senate we need to bring about great change, is another.

Today’s write from BuzzFeed News:

Filmmaker Ken Burns Delivers Blistering Takedown Of Donald Trump At Stanford

The renowned documentary filmmaker offered a lengthy critique of Donald Trump while delivering Stanford’s commencement address on Sunday.

Here are Burns’ remarks on Trump as delivered on Sunday:

For 216 years, our elections, though bitterly contested, have featured the philosophies and character of candidates who were clearly qualified. That is not the case this year. One is glaringly not qualified. So before you do anything with your well-earned degree, you must do everything you can to defeat the retrograde forces that have invaded our democratic process, divided our house, to fight against, no matter your political persuasion, the dictatorial tendencies of the candidate with zero experience in the much maligned but subtle art of governance; who is against lots of things, but doesn’t seem to be for anything, offering only bombastic and contradictory promises, and terrifying Orwellian statements; a person who easily lies, creating an environment where the truth doesn’t seem to matter; who has never demonstrated any interest in anyone or anything but himself and his own enrichment; who insults veterans, threatens a free press, mocks the handicapped, denigrates women, immigrants and all Muslims; a man who took more than a day to remember to disavow a supporter who advocates white supremacy and the Ku Klux Klan; an infantile, bullying man who, depending on his mood, is willing to discard old and established alliances, treaties and long-standing relationships.

I feel genuine sorrow for the understandably scared and—they feel—powerless people who have flocked to his campaign in the mistaken belief that—as often happens on TV—a wand can be waved and every complicated problem can be solved with the simplest of solutions. They can’t. It is a political Ponzi scheme. And asking this man to assume the highest office in the land would be like asking a newly minted car driver to fly a 747.

As a student of history, I recognize this type. He emerges everywhere and in all eras. We see nurtured in his campaign an incipient Proto-fascism, a nativist anti-immigrant Know Nothing-ism, a disrespect for the judiciary, the prospect of women losing authority over their own bodies, African Americans again asked to go to the back of the line, voter suppression gleefully promoted, jingoistic saber rattling, a total lack of historical awareness, a political paranoia that, predictably, points fingers, always making the other wrong. These are all virulent strains that have at times infected us in the past. But they now loom in front of us again—all happening at once. We know from our history books that these are the diseases of ancient and now fallen empires. The sense of commonwealth, of shared sacrifice, of trust, so much a part of American life, is eroding fast, spurred along and amplified by an amoral Internet that permits a lie to circle the globe three times before the truth can get started.

We no longer have the luxury of neutrality or “balance,” or even of bemused disdain. Many of our media institutions have largely failed to expose this charlatan, torn between a nagging responsibility to good journalism and the big ratings a media circus always delivers. In fact, they have given him the abundant airtime he so desperately craves, so much so that it has actually worn down our natural human revulsion to this kind of behavior. Hey, he’s rich; he must be doing something right. He is not. Edward R. Murrow would have exposed this naked emperor months ago. He is an insult to our history. Do not be deceived by his momentary “good behavior.” It is only a spoiled, misbehaving child hoping somehow to still have dessert.

And do not think that the tragedy in Orlando underscores his points. It does not. We must “disenthrall ourselves,” as Abraham Lincoln said, from the culture of violence and guns. And then “we shall save our country.”

This is not a liberal or conservative issue, a red state, blue state divide. This is an American issue. Many honorable people, including the last two Republican presidents, members of the party of Abraham Lincoln, have declined to support him. And I implore those “Vichy Republicans” who have endorsed him to please, please reconsider. We must remain committed to the kindness and community that are the hallmarks of civilization and reject the troubling, unfiltered Tourettes of his tribalism.

The next few months of your “commencement,” that is to say, your future, will be critical to the survival of our Republic. “The occasion is piled high with difficulty.” Let us pledge here today that we will not let this happen to the exquisite, yet deeply flawed, land we all love and cherish—and hope to leave intact to our posterity. Let us “nobly save,” not “meanly lose, the last best hope of earth.”

(The rest of Burns’ Stanford delivery can be heard on the attached video, if you’re interested.)

    Very well Said.

  2. Brenda Says:

This quote of the father of that crazy nut shows how screwed up religion has made the world.
The father of the Orlando shooter said early Monday that his son shouldn’t have killed patrons at the gay nightclub Pulse because God will punish them,

The Washington Post reported. “God himself will punish those involved in homosexuality,” Seddique Mateen said in Dari, speaking in a video…

  3. Jessica Says:

Ken you nailed it. Why would any logical person vote for trump? He is a clown who panders to whatever group he is in front of that day.

  4. Larry Says:

None of Trump’s supporters care what this liberal says about him.

Denouncements of Trump are a waste of time. We will vote for him because he will make America Great again.

  5. Vanessa Says:

What has Donald Trump done that gives anyone a clue that he is qualified to handle the complex problems of the this country?

  6. Gloria Says:

Thank you Mr. Burns. You gave us plenty of reasons why no right thinking person would vote for that narcissistic, know-nothing, rabble rousing Trump.

  7. Kenneth Says:

Liberals like burns hate Trump because he is against the status quo. Trump will not cede control of America to the corporations and other powers that be.

  8. Alice Says:

Trump is no more a racist than I am. This racist tag is just to turn people off against him.

  9. Ira Says:

Seriously Alice#8, trump convicts himself of being a racist almost every time he opens his mouth. Have you seen his tweets?

  10. Pena Says:

I am so glad you brought your blog back. Just listening to all the different takes is mind expanding.

It gives new meaning of the phrase – “to each his own.”

I am truly amazed at the mental contortions one is willing to put his brain through to support donald trump.

  11. Horace Says:

Is Trump supposed to be responsible for this too?

A lawyer for a heavily armed Indiana man who told police he was headed to a gay pride parade when they arrested him in California says the suspect’s father is cooperating with the FBI.

Louisville, Kentucky, attorney Bobby Boyd tells station WDRB-TV ( http://bit.ly/25XoJG5 ) that the father of James Wesley Howell is shocked by his 20-year-old son’s arrest and is talking to investigators. Boyd asked that the father not be identified.

Howell was arrested Sunday with a car full of assault rifles and chemicals used in making explosives. He told police he was going to LA Pride in West Hollywood, an event that draws hundreds of thousands of people each year.

Boyd, who represented Howell in a Kentucky case, says Howell is trying to find an attorney in California. He’s scheduled to appear in Los Angeles court Tuesday.

  12. Mildred Says:

Horace#11, maybe not but take a look at him. http://www.kswo.com/story/32205089/heavily-armed-man-was-going-to-los-angeles-gay-pride-parade

He is the type who would be influenced by the religious right and trump.

  13. Kerry Says:

I found this about the 20 year old. I don’t think he was going to harm any gays.

(RNN) – Santa Monica police are now saying that James Howell did not say he intend to cause harm at the Los Angeles Pride celebration, according to The Los Angeles Times.

Earlier on Sunday, police in Santa Monica, CA, discovered guns and possible explosives in Howell’s car. Howell did admit to police that he was headed to the Pride Parade, but police now say he never said he was going to cause harm.

Santa Monica Police Chief Jacqueline Seabrooks said on Twitter that Howell had told one of the officers that his intentions were to do harm. The suspect had a criminal record in Clark County, IN, according to WAVE 3 News.

Howell also had a criminal record in Clark County, IN. In October 2015, he was charged with intimidation and felony pointing a firearm at another person, The Times reports. Howell pleaded guilty to the intimidation charge and prosecutors dropped the pointing a firearm at another person charge.

A tipster called police early Sunday morning about a prowler and found the suspect nearby. The suspect was arrested around 5 a.m. local time.

Police said they “were not aware of what the suspect’s intentions were at this point.” A friend told The Times that Howell did have negative opinions against gay people.

The incident is not thought to be connected to Sunday’s shooting at a gay nightclub in Orlando.

Participants at the LA Pride parade held a moment of silence for the victims in Orlando, and continued on with the planned event.

“All our hearts are with Orlando, we are Pulse, we are Orlando, we are all part of a country that will not be beaten down, we will not go away. And today we are proud of who we are,” said Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti.

Garcetti emphasized parade goers “are safe, we are protected, our law enforcement officials are here.”

Police were tightening security at and around the parade.

Gay pride events had been held for decades, but became organized in the 1970s and 80s. Pride celebrations are held throughout the world to promote self-acceptance and to combat discrimination.

  14. Rainbow Says:

Not likely Trump will not be president.

  15. ie4c Says:

Rainbow#14, the one thing I liked about her is her promise to us that you are all human. Tasty little morsels that you are. I would have you any other way.

  16. Mike,TM Says:

Watching MSNBC I learned that if you have an arabic sir name and someone reports that you are making idle threats or boasts, the FBI will come in and investigate the individual. They will spend tens of thousands of tax dollars putting a spy into his life to follow him for months.

All this to prevent a bad actor from attempting a mass killing of Americans. But a simple outlawing of AR15s and other assault rifles which would prevent a bad actor, arab or otherwise from ACTUALLY being able to kill in huge numbers in a few minutes isn’t done.

The reason, Money, the republican party has no problem spending tons of tax payers money to investigate these arabs one person at a time. But the bought and paid for by the gun industry Congress, refuses to take profits out of the hands of their donors.

So mass murders will continue. And we will continue to hear the question – What did the FBI miss? What could we do differently? Why didn’t the FBI get the alert when he bought the guns?

No one is asking Why was anyone allowed to buy one of those assault type guns, period?

All this gobbly gook to avoid offending tiny dick white boys who use a false 2nd Amendment argument to dodge the question of why anyone needs an assault rifle in the first place.

  17. Jackie Says:

I completely understand what you are saying Mike,TM#16. We whites like to talk out of both sides of our mouths when it comes to our built in privileges. My mother says she hates blacks because she was mugged by one when she was 18. She is 63 years old and has been robbed at gun point, had her house burgled twice and recently punched in the face because she refused to leave a parking space promptly.

All of these were done by white men or women. Yet, she doesn’t seem to be afraid of all white people. I confronted her about her attitude and she just shrugged and said, “they are criminals.”

  18. Henry Says:

Trump’s “slander” of President Obama is tolerated by most of white America because he is black. No, niggers it’s tolerated by white America because the nigger is a muslim sympathizer.

  19. Wanda Says:

I just saw an interview with the killer’s wife. She said he was a closet homosexual. She showed pictures of him in gay clubs. I appears his father made his statements to save face for the family because he knew that his some was a closet homosexual.

This guy had no connections with ISIS or any other radical group. He called 911 to hide even in death that he was revenging himself on a group he didn’t want to belong to. It was a mass murder/ suicide. A mass murder that could not have been accomplished if it had been illegal to purchase assault weapons.

The republican Congress are taking blood money from the gun manufacturers who pay them to keep assault weapons on the market. I won’t bother to address the psychology behind guys who feel they need to own a weapon designed to kill human beings on a massive scale in a short time.

  20. Kent Says:

You are so correct he was on the dating app for gays. The Grinder app, and Adam for Adam app. The guy was a closet gay. He just didn’t want his father to find out. But he did and he set out to commit suicide by cop, but his anger with the fact that he was gay and his father wouldn’t accept it made him take it out on the club he frequented.

He was no international terrorist. He talked tough to hide his gayness. He only married to hide the fact that he was gay. He was a person made sick because his religion and father wouldn’t accept his being gay. There are gays who are afraid to admit they had a sexual relationship with him.

  21. Maury Says:

Why does the republican Congress protect killing machines like the AR15? When will their supporters get over their love of these killing machines?

If we know anything, we know there will be another mass killing. We know this because the killing machines are for sale.

  22. Ruth/AF Says:

The media is often much more subjective when they report the new about democrats than they are about the republicans. They give the republicans a pass on the lies and bullshit they float because they know it is basically white america’s point of view or the bullshit is intended to foster a narrative whites are content with.

Less you call me conspiratorial, here is what I mean: Take this article by the Republic:
    ————————————
Within hours of the deadliest shooting in U.S. history, leading politicians on both sides of the aisle turned the tragedy into a political issue.

On Sunday, after the slaughter of 49 people in an Orlando gay nightclub, Donald Trump said President Obama should resign and Hillary Clinton should withdraw from the presidential race.

His reason? The two refused to use the term “radical Islamic terrorism,” he claimed.

Trump also redoubled his call for a ban on Muslims entering the United States and said the country should be very restrictive in accepting refugees from the Middle East.

In a speech Monday, Clinton said Trump’s argument about the term “radical Islamic terrorism” is irrelevant, adding “Whether you call it radical jihadism, radical Islamism, I think they mean the same thing. I’m happy to say either.”

However, Democrats weren’t above politicizing the issue, either.

Democratic senators said Monday that they will take up legislation that would ban gun sales to suspected terrorists.

“How many more people have to die at the hands of a terrorist with a gun before the Senate acts?” the oft-grandstanding Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said. “I hope and pray the answer is none.”
    —————————————-

Whether or not a person uses the term “radical Islamic terrorism” is irrelevant because it will not or could not effect what happened. Neither would banning Muslims from entering the United States since the killer was an American citizen.

However, when it came to criticizing the Dems it became subjective because it was their opinion that the dems taking up legislation that would ban gun sales to suspected terrorist is political.

Just because it takes a political action to produce a solution to a national problem doesn’t necessarily make it political. For certain if the killer could not have purchased an assault rifle, he would not have been able to kill as many people as he did with a hand gun. So outlawing the ownership of assault weapons would prevent, terrorists, and other crazies from using one to kill a huge number of people with a gun.

Then there was the objective fact concerning Sen. Chuck Schumer D-N.Y. who presented this question; “How many more people have to die at the hands of a terrorist with a gun before the Senate acts?” the oft-grandstanding Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said. “I hope and pray the answer is none.”

Notice the subjective inclusion of “the oft-grandstanding Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y.” How is it “grandstanding” to ask the obvious question that something be done about the access to killing machines like assault rifles?

Who cares what the killer’s motive is if you prevent him from using the killing machine (in this case an assault rifle) he needs to complete the act. Americans lives depend on their hired Congress doing that.

Is it too much to ask that rather than a moment of silence for the dead, they take that moment to come up with a compromise that will remove assault weapons from the list of guns a citizen can legally purchase?

If not, we will continue to have those meaningless “moments of silence.” On the other hand enacting a law that outlaws the ownership, and selling of assault will prevent a killer from using one to do what happened in Orlando.

  23. Trina Says:

The thing about men who need this type of gun to feel manly is that they will use any type of argument to justify owning one.

If you check out the comment sites of articles written to denounce the ownership of assault rifles. The men will come out in droves to disparage anyone who says the weapon should be banned, especially vitriolic is there attack upon a woman.

Why? Because it is the woman they need the gun to impress. Most of these men believe they are sexually inadequate to meet a woman’s needs. So they either find an external object that they believe will impress her or they put her down as being a slut, whore, or etc because she appears to need more sexually than they can provide.

They talk among themselves with great gusto about their willingness to use their assault rifles or have them “pried from the cold dead hands.”

Totally silly, inane boasts. Most would shit their pants if someone shot at them. They are the mass murderers who quickly attempt to give up when they run out of ammo or shoot themselves rather that face the consequences of their action.

Tiny penises wonders each and every one.

  24. Johanna Says:

Trina#23, you are more right than you will ever know. My husband belongs to a gun club. Those who own assault rifles usually own more than one type.

I sense the competition between them when they discuss the fire power of their penis extensions. Each trying to out man the other with their hints to their greater expertise in the field of fire power.

Speaking from my experience with my husband, tiny penis wonders just about covers them.

  25. Helena Says:

Johanna#24, Lady you of what you speak about. My husband, brothers and friends are pure gun enthusiasts. They live, breathe and gush about their 2nd Amendment rights.

Yet, what they really know one can put on the head of the proverbial pin. I’m a constitutional law professor. Most of my relatives and friends are professional stock brokers or well positioned business execs.

We have the usual assortment of lawyers, doctors and computer specialists. Their common thread is they are gun nuts and white. Most would lose control of their biological functions if found alone in the company of any group of OTWs.

But get them together with their guns and they will conquer the world and rid it of the evil influence of the violent OTW to protect their women folk and their children.

Never mind they are the greatest threat to their women folk and children. They vote in those politicians that limit female equality in pay, health, or any other issue.

I guess one could say I am part of the problem since I sit silently among this tirade of racism, sexism and gun madness. Yes, I do. But Michelle, when I go to the polls, I never vote for the republican. Yes I am a registered republican.

Oh and yes, big guns and small penises are a match made to spec.

  26. Rachel Says:

Trina#23, you nailed it. All I need to add is those sites are censored to protect the egos of those gun rabid males. They get to malign, insult or demean women at will. But if you attempt to link big guns with tiny penises your comment will be censored.

Can’t insult the length of the physical member of their sex. But they can insult the size of your brain or intelligence.

Why can’t women make the connection of penis size to the size or number of guns men have. I tried to say that the fire power of the gun chosen is indirectly proportional to the size of the male penis and I was censored for being inflammatory without a plausible connection to reality.

Really? You think the censor was male? You think?
