No, Donald Trump Isn’t Doing What Al Gore Did In 2000

Good morning!

False Equivalency.

I realize this is a term that’s getting a lot of play not only in world affairs but also in this election. Voters on the fence put Trump and Clinton in the same camp. Trump and his supporters like to compare Clinton’s treatment of women who have played around with Bill the same same as Trump’s degrading comments and predatory actions toward women.

Now Trump’s surrogates claim that Trump isn’t doing anything that hasn’t been done before — by 2000 Democratic presidential nominee Al Gore, when Trump refuses to promise that he’ll accept the results of his race.

Sorry, it ain’t the same. False equivalency.

Here’s the write from the Huff Po:

No, Donald Trump Isn’t Doing What Al Gore Did In 2000

He’s saying the whole system is rigged against him.

Donald Trump has refused to promise that he’ll accept the results of his race against Hillary Clinton. “I’ll keep you in suspense,” he said Wednesday at the third presidential debate.

He’s previously claimed that the election is rigged against him, and he said the same thing about the primary.

Trump is “threatening to upend a basic pillar of American democracy,” the Associated Press wrote in its story on the debate.

But Trump’s surrogates say the Republican presidential nominee isn’t doing anything that hasn’t been done before — by 2000 Democratic presidential nominee Al Gore.

Trump surrogates Jeffrey Lord and Corey Lewandowski both made the argument on CNN Wednesday night. “Al Gore conceded that time, unconceded, and then reconceded three weeks later,” Lewandowski said.

Screen Shot 2016-10-20 at 9.49.56 AM

Like most things that campaign surrogates say on cable news, this is probably just disingenuous trolling. But it’s still worth pointing out that what Gore and Trump did are not the same. Here’s a (very) condensed version of what really happened 16 years ago:

1. On election night, several television networks called Florida for George W. Bush, clinching the electoral college — although Gore would end up winning about 500,000 more votes. Gore called Bush to concede.

2. Then the networks uncalled Florida — and Gore unconceded, realizing that he was ahead in the popular vote and if he ended up winning Florida he would have won the election. The election was literally too close to call.

3. A legally mandated recount began.

4. Bush (not Gore) sued to stop recounts in some counties.

5. Gore sued to extend deadlines for recounts.

6. The Florida Supreme Court ordered a more extensive recount. Bush (not Gore) appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court.

7. The U.S. Supreme Court stopped the recount.

8. Gore conceded.

(You can read a full timeline here.)

Here’s how the New Yorker’s Jeffrey Toobin, who wrote a book on the recount, described the Supreme Court decision:

What made the decision in Bush v. Gore so startling was that it was the work of Justices who were considered, to greater or lesser extents, judicial conservatives. On many occasions, these Justices had said that they believed in the preëminence of states’ rights, in a narrow conception of the equal-protection clause of the Fourteenth Amendment, and, above all, in judicial restraint. Bush v. Gore violated those principles. The Supreme Court stepped into the case even though the Florida Supreme Court had been interpreting Florida law; the majority found a violation of the rights of George W. Bush, a white man, to equal protection when these same Justices were becoming ever more stingy in finding violations of the rights of African-Americans; and the Court stopped the recount even before it was completed, and before the Florida courts had a chance to iron out any problems—a classic example of judicial activism, not judicial restraint, by the majority.

Bush v. Gore would resonate, in any case, because the Court prevented Florida from determining, as best it could, whether Gore or Bush really won. (Recounts of the ballots by media organizations produced ambiguous results; they suggest that Gore would have won a full statewide recount and Bush would have won the limited recount initially sought by the Gore forces.)

Despite all this, Gore conceded — and encouraged his followers to accept that decision.

No one is arguing that Trump can’t or shouldn’t do what Gore did. Trump, of course, would be within his rights to pursue recounts if the election is close. He’s within his rights to follow Bush’s lead and take his complaints to the Supreme Court.

But what Trump has been doing lately is vastly different from what Gore did. He’s calling the election into question well before it’s even happened, and alleging it is “rigged” against him.

“Trump did not say that of course he would accept the result barring a razor thin election or widespread election problems,” election law professor Rick Hasen told Buzzfeed’s Chris Geidner. “He said he’d keep us in suspense.”

This is dangerous, as the Los Angeles Times explained in an editorial two days ago:

Trump’s claim of large-scale voter fraud is preposterous. Trump is casually undermining — and with no evidence — the presumption that elections are fair and that their outcome must be respected by losers and their supporters. That assumption in turn makes possible the peaceful transition of power and respect for the rule of law on which this country long has prided itself.

That respect is the cornerstone not only of a stable democracy, but also a functional one. If people question the legitimacy of an election just because it’s won by someone they disagree with, there’s little hope of bridging ideological differences and striking the compromises that are an essential part of governing a divided country.

[...]

If Trump [claims the presidency was stolen from him] on election night, and a significant number of his supporters believe him, a body blow will have been struck to a foundational principle of democracy: Respect for the outcome of elections even if your candidate isn’t the winner.

Gore contested the 2000 election to the extent allowed by the law. He accepted the Supreme Court’s decision, even though he didn’t like it, because it was the law — and it was what he thought was right for the country. Trump is vowing to do exactly the opposite of what Gore did: He’s saying he won’t accept a result that he doesn’t like.

Politico’s Ben White summed it all up in a tweet:

Readers: Did you watch the debate? I don’t know about you but I’m tired of listening to Trump. I find that he is just an infantile, lying, bullying, disturbing, distraction and the time won’t come soon enough for Hillary to win this.

Thoughts? Blog me.

By the way, I’m a nasty woman and I love it. Anyone else?

  1. Janis Says:

Of course he isn’t Michelle, but the right knows that. They just lie to your face about it as they do everything else they claim to be about.

For instance: 1. The call themselves the moralist party, and they feature their evangelical following. However they and that band of evangelicals support trump who is as amoral as they come.
    2. They claim to be the party of less taxes. However, they only mean less taxes for the rich.
    3. They claim to be the party of patriots. However, they accept the russians hacking into the democrats emails and they accept that creep trump saying he won’t accept the results of the POTUS election unless he wins.

The racist bastards are only concerned about themselves remaining in charge.

  2. Patricia Says:

This Nasty woman is in agreement, Michelle. The basket of deplorables need to see the end of their messiah.

  3. Peter/Guam Says:

As the third largest brewer in the world, Heineken has great reach in the global market.

On Guam, the iconic green bottle has its own hold on beer drinkers as the third largest-selling brand and the top-selling bottled beer, according to Island Wines & Spirits. And the company recently announced how Guam fits into the far reaches of Heineken.

Guam is one of the newest destinations added to Heineken’s Cities of the World Campaign, featured on bottles and cans that will be shared in several destinations.

  4. Gary Says:

My take on Kaepernick. I am old enough to remember when most non-blacks said the same thing about Martin Luther King’s sit ins and boycotts and Mohammed Ali when he refused to get drafted into the Vietnam War. They called them disrespectful.

If it was the sons of rich whites getting shot and killed while being unarmed and either committing no crime or a minor one, Ginsburg and the elite would rally to end that abuse overnight.

  5. Pat Says:

All the way down the ticket. The Republicans need to learn in a very graphic way that their Southern Strategy, and their mobilitization of right wing Christians and other fanatics is not going to work for them anymore.

We need both houses and the WH and as many state houses as possible so that we can get something done. We can’t leave Scalia’s seat vacant until they get someone in the WH that they like. What will stop them from blocking Hillary in the same way? Enough is enough.

We have to move on the environment, on alternative fuels, on infrastructure, etc. If the Dems aren’t progressive enough for you, don’t sit on your hands. You have to show up. Vote.

  6. John Says:

Trumps Father arrested at a KKK rally….

Just look at Hitlers rallys in the 1930s…. Same lets Make Germany Great Again and all our problems are the fault of non pure Arayans….attack of minorities

Just look at how Putin is attacking mainstream parties in NATO and supporting the new Nazi parties/white supremist parties, such as the now off the rail Repub party in the USA and how Trump continually alines with Putin, now on Bosnia, on Syria, is anti NATO, for allowing N.Korea to have Nukes…, loves dictators…

Trump is told over and over again by our CIA that Russia is doing the hacking, Germany, France says same thing, he denies its Russia, now even denies that any hacking is going on..

One crazy however is not the problem, it is a basket full of deplorables who cheer this small , insane, terrible uniformed businessman on..

  7. Olin Says:

My goodness. Old days are his aim. “Old Days…” they ripped him out of that seat so fast…” Good old days. Return to greatness? Return to thuggery. Get to those polls and get rid of Thumper FOREVER from the political spectrum. What a disgrace to our so-called “democracy.” So sad.

  8. John Says:

Trump said he sent investigators to Hawaii and they were finding interesting things and that they could find no evidence or anyone who even knew Obama.. all a lie, Obama was on the State Championship basketball team. He is in his schools Year book. But remember he hires the best, that’s why 6 bankruptcies, lost money in casinos when every one else in Atlantic City was making money and American banks will not loan him money.

Donald said he saw 3,000 Muslims cheering the fall of the twin towers, knew hundreds of people who died in 911, said he saw people jumping from the Twin Towers when he was 3 miles away, ALL Lies. Said he made money when a bankruptcy judge sold his airline( he got nothing, its was losing 25 million a year), showed Trumps Steaks that were not made for 4 years had Bush Steak Rapper), was against the Iraq war, was against a quick pullout, was against going into Libya… no matter what the recordings say, said he made 1 million an episode on the Apprentice, made under $70K, said he went to Wharton, did not, said he was really smart, made “C”s, said he was worth 10 billion. likely not a billion( highest estimate at 3 billion), said he would show his tax returns, said he did not pay actors to attend his Presidential announcement, he did, said crime was up, its down, said the economy sucks (compared to a Clinton year 1998 to 2013- ignoring last 3 years of wage increases), when it’s better than any other developed nation coming out of this latest Repub trickle down, de-reg mess during Bush( and he wants to do more of that) mess, said Hilary did not have a plan for paid parental leave, has always had such a plan, said he was pro embargo , while he was violating the Cuban Embargo, lied about his charitable givings, ran scams like Trump Univ, Trump Vitamin Network, Trump Institute, collected deposits on condos he never built, did not pay thousands of small business subcontractors, said he would never use a Teleprompter, nor do fund raisers and would self fund his campaign, had to be embarrassed to actually donate the money he promised to Veterans , has said Reagan was a weak leader, Clinton the best president who should not have been impeached, that Hilary was a great Senator and Secretary of State, Testified before Congress that the only way to fix the Reagan depression was top tax rates like in the 1970s, and in 1999 said we needed a 25% wealth tax and was Pro choice. Says he wrote the several books, did not write a word of any of them. Pretended to be a nonexistent PR man so he could call the press up and talk about all the woman who wanted him. Said his wife has a college degree, imports foreign workers for 40 years and still does and illegally in his Trump Modeling agency, still saying he cant find American works for his hotels so illegally using H1bs, is going to make America great again, while saying American workers make too much and is against the min wage and Unions…. and says he makes deals by saying what ever the other side wants to hear… has taken 120 position on 10 issues,,,, Lies about why he does not make any of his products in the USA. Has said he knew Putin , has said he does not know Putin. Of course he also said that Global warming is Chinese Hoax and that California does not have a drought, then said he did not in the debate.
Said in his FEC filings that his income was almost 700 million dollars pre tax in 2015… Well his major properties all were losing money. More Lies. Said our problem was almost 50% of the people don’t pay taxes, well it turns out he has been one of the 47% for over 20 years. The difference is many are retired or don’t make a lot of money, while he flies around in his own jet and owns many mansions( or the bank does).

Trump now says 2 hundred generals/admirals support him, NO, that’s Clinton’s total. Another lie. He says he won the first debate and the second debate, no he lost both badly, the worst showings in any Presidential debates… More Lies or insanity.

He said in the 2nd debate that he did not get money from Russia, another lie. He son when asked in 2008 where they were getting their money, said a lot of it is coming out of Russia and its on tape.

He said that climate change is a hoax, while asking the government in Scotland to build sea walls around his golf course to protect it from the rising sea levels caused by global warming.

He started by saying the Hacks were not being done by Russia, even when experts tell him yes it is the Russian and from there he goes to the Hacks have not even happened.

What Trump says is worthless, just as his check was in the mail to subcontractors was worthless.

  9. Solo Says:

There is so much left to do when it comes to civil and human rights in America. It is amazing that the people at these political forums can get away with assaulting people of color, well African Americans.

I hope America can learn from this election & do better the next time. Its just such a shame to all of this playing out, all in the name of democracy. Doesn’t look too democractic right now.

  10. Dominic Says:

We have serious issues with this people. And it’s not so simple as many want it to be. It’s very deep very complicated and very ingrained. It has caused a entire community generations of lost progress and pain.

People see issued within the black community’s at large. Black folks aren’t dumb many are living it. They know. They do however get rightly defensive when white people point them out while being smug or throwing blame. Black people I believe see it as they know there is issues. What they don’t want or need is white people so called saving them or blaming them or ignoring the history and deep systemic reasons for these issues.

What I believe they would like is a coming to terms from Americans including white Americans of the why and how we got here. And a PARTNER in people of ALL colors including white to fix these why’s and how’s.

First things first though and that is a concesus of truth here. And that is black people have been systematically treated in one way or another as cattle in American society. It didn’t end with the 13th it didn’t die with Jim Crows death. It has caused a societal collapse in a community of Americas oldest and first AMERICANS.

Blacks have been here since the colonists. They helped build America. How did we get here with how they are viewed and treated today? Let’s embrace truth finally.

  11. Michael Says:

I don’t think anyone can doubt that the Trump campaign has driven a wedge in the social divisions within the country. He isn’t even bothering to use the subtle approach of Nixon or the master Reagan. He feeds on the power of anger and conveys it to all his people.

Teachers across the country say they are seeing this anger being played out in school yards. The man is a danger to society. He’s willing to destroy thousands of lives just to feed his own ego. The hate and prejudices he’s spreading will last a generation. Pathetic and disgusting.

  12. Kris Says:

It should be obvious to anyone with even rudimentary powers of observation that the nation has done better under the last few Democrats than it has under the Republicans. Obama has now taken the country to nearly the level it was at when Bill Clinton left office. We will be better off under Hillary than we would be under any of the meatheads running for the GOP nomination.

    Yes, I said it. Meatheads.

  13. Stephanie Says:

I will be reading with great interest what you deplorables are saying next year after President Clinton gets elected. It should be fantastic.

  20. Scott Says:

Ken#19, It seems the last 8 years of GW were exemplarary. High unemployment in 2004, and again in 2008 with the same Republican agenda of no new job creation.

Gasoline prices soared over $4.00 a gallon in his last year in office, to include the taxpayer bailing out another Bush in Silverado S&L, the great deal of Enron, as well as Lehman Brothers going bankrupt. Excellent running of the country wouldn’t you agree kevult?

The last successful economic state was during the years of WILLIAM JEFFERSON CLINTON! There were plenty of jobs and an economic surplus, quickly erased and debt plunged by his successor GW!

  21. Debra Says:

Ken#19, Show me the hearing/testimony/court case that has ruled she is responsible or, that it was her fault.

    Waiting….

  27. Alycedale Says:

The fact is the MSM is rigged. But it is rigged against OTWs. For example, all you hear is that the people support trump because they want “change.”

First let me say that again this goes to white folks serious lack of originality. The stole that term from Obama’s people. However when this group speaks of change they mean a change from sharing the benefits of this nation with OTWs. They want to go back to the days when the color of your skin determined what you could do in this country.

Second the white boy MSM is always calling the trump supporters “the populace” movement. Implying that only white people make up the “population” of this country.

Trump isn’t appealing to any popular movement, he is appealing to the racist movement in this country. But the MSM has rigged the news so that we only hear populace.

The term “popular” when applied to politics means political activity carried on by “the people” as a whole rather than restricted to politicians or political parties.

These racist white bastards are trying to hijack the term “the people” to mean them. They are not “the people,” we, “the people” means all the people of this country.

Actually we have never had an unrigged election in this country nationally. Since OTWs to today, these white bastards have been denying or suppressing the ability of OTWs to vote.

I just want to live to see the change in demographics. Let the racist bastard get their guns. Reality will bite them in the ass when they discover you got to bring some to get some.

Too embarrassing to watch. He made a mockery of this tradition. That is not a president. She, however was elegant, poised, and so smart with her speech. Now, that’s a president. #ImWithHer

  29. Sonja Says:

Watch for the media to bring the false equivalency by saying they both were doing it.

What fucking bullshit. After watching trumI embarrass himself, i hoped Hilary wouldnt do the same….and she didnt. Thank God someone had some sense of decorum.

  30. Jill Says:

She’s the only logical and smart choice. Trumpuppet’s clearly like to be lied to. Especially since Trump only tells the truth 30% of the time. Pretty pathetic. I think most people are with her now. At least those with any brain.

  31. Ilene Says:

For a few moments I thought he was human. Then it all went downhill from there. Trump isn’t only a raving lunatic, he’s completely void of a personality. #ImWithTheNastyWoman

  32. Barbara Says:

The GOP is Nothing but lies, lies, and more lies. The GOP has given birth to Trump. A con artist, corrupt, bigot, racist, liar. Lord please help us.

  33. Gary Says:

Trump was just being Trump. Presidential candidates are supposed to make jokes about themselves instead Trump threw his wife under the Bus. Then he stopped making jokes and just went into a string of insults about Hillary. When an audience of older rich conservatives boo you then you have hit rock bottom.

  34. Jim Says:

Watching the look of horror on the 2 men around him was so telling. You can see the inward thoughts on their faces and the shiney sweat building on them . You can see even their souls were tarnished.

  35. Anonymous Says:

Jim#34, I’m glad I wasn’t the only one who saw that.

  36. Ava Says:

Agreed because they knew Trump is a Embarrassment. I must admit I thought that was going to be the first time I liked listening to Donald Trump give a speech/roast. After further listening it suddenly became terrible as he started to disparage against Hillary and became same old Deplorable Trump Nonsense.👎 No Thanks

Hillary killed it at the Al Smith Dinner. Some of her quotes:

“I just want to put you all in a basket of adorables. And you all look so good in your tuxes, or what I call, formal pantsuits.”

Her Michael Bloomberg joke: “It’s a shame he’s not speaking tonight, I’m curious to hear what a billionaire has to say.”

“Donald really is as healthy as a horse, you know the one Vladimir Putin rides around on.”

[…] Ken: I really despise when people are stupid and write comments in all capitals as if that is going to make what they say the truth. It is people like you who are either 1) Stupid 2) Lazy because you can google the truth or 3) Racist. I really don’t know if you’re # 3 but you’re certainly #1 and if you’re not going to do some research to find the truth and promote that, then you are definitely #2. […]
