Obama in Berlin: Who saw it? Who was banned?

Posted by michellemoquin on July 25th, 2008

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OAhb06Z8N1c&hl=en&fs=1]

Okay my  German friends – I know you are out there; I have heard from several of you. Jon, Herbert: So what did you think of Obama’s speech in Berlin last night? Were you able to attend the rally? 200,000 people went to see Obama. And on the news you had the repubs bitching that it was not his place to be in Germany representing America. Who said he was representing America?  He spoke not as a candidate but as a World Citizen. Furthermore it was stated that he shouldn’t be making speeches overseas; that he is being premature because he isn’t the president ‘yet’…Yeah, but it’s perfectly fine for McCain to make a speech in Canada.

Anyway, I digressed….back to the rally. So…can you believe that the US Embassy instructed State Department employees stationed there to NOT attend the public rally?  This is true Berlin’ites. Did you hear about this?  The State Department said that they always maintain that no US Government Foreign Service person overseas should be seen supporting one side or the other. Don’t they realize that preventing is advocating one side or the other? I guess they don’t want to. And furthermore, they just had to add this to CTA (cover their ass), “It has nothing to do with ‘who’ the candidate is.”

Hmm…funny. Of course, you know this would not have happened if McCain was rallying in Berlin.   Patrick Kennedy  who works for the State Department said,“I don’t believe we’ve ever had to interpret this before. None of us thinking about this could come up with a precedent”. Gee,  and they say it has nothing to do with ‘who’ the candidate is.   Yeah right.

The Manual states: ‘A U.S. citizen employee, spouse, or family member shall not engage in partisan political activities abroad”.  However, the American Foreign Service Association complained calling the ruling an, ‘unnecessarily narrow interpretation’ of the Foreign Affairs Manual. ‘The fact that you are working for the U.S. government overseas should not preclude political activity that you could engage in in the United States,’ one retired senior Foreign Service officer said.  Hmm..sounds fair to me. Unfortunately the complaint didn’t get very far. But c’mon,  what could they have done in such a short period of time? They were only notified 18 hours before the speech.

We can’t ride the State department too hard…they did make one adjustment: Even though the manual includes spouses and family members, the State Department decided to let that part slide, making the ruling ONLY for the service officials. Now, wasn’t that nice of them.

So what’s the big beef? …like it’s not going to be shown on TV or discussed amongst everyone…especially now since the spouses and family members were allowed to attend.  If anything, it is going to bring about even more discussions and more focus on the event because of  this ridiculous ruling.  Why not just let them hang with their families and friends at the rally.  Why not? Because Kennedy says he wants to ensure that foreign service officials will remain untainted by a “partisan political act.”   Hmm…Do you think the State Department would opine similar thoughts if it was McCain making an appearance?

I’ll tell you what the big beef is. The big beef is that I think the administration is afraid that the people stationed there are going to be exposed to the truth: The truth being that the Germans ‘worship’ Obama and ‘loathe’ Bush and god forbid if they express negative sentiments about McCain too.  This ain’t new news folks, and stopping State Department employees from attending an Obama rally isn’t going to make them jump on the McCain train.

So do you think that with this low blow act the Bushmin are getting a tad bit worried that their man McCain isn’t gonna make it into the White House?

Readers: What do you think?

What about you Peeps from Germany: Tell us your thoughts. Blog me.

Wow…when I leave you peeps alone to ‘finish it’, you’re all over it.

Hi Terri: Thanks for reading every day. Oh…some people have such little faith in women. Happy to hear that you are not one of them, but it does not surprise me. Why do you think that with women holding the majority of the vote, some women still won’t vote a woman into office? Like…Hillary could do any worse than what is going on right now…the bar is already set way low and wouldn’t take much to surpass.  Don’t get me wrong, I am a huge Obama fan….it’s just that people would vote in a person such as a Bush or McCain before they would consider to vote in a woman.  I’ve said my two on this way too many times. Moved forward…

Dark Hispanic man: I know you are so right on. A white man has nothing to bitch about. Did you watch the CNN special last night ‘Black in America’? Last night particularly held my interest. The struggles and challenges that I am aware of are so much more magnified than I could ever imagine. I felt so infuriated as I watched and listened to statistic after devastating statistic. A white man has absolutely no idea what it is like for a black man; for OTW”s.  In case any of you missed it, it will be aired again this Saturday night.

Hi Anon:  I remember that comment that Racime made. Not that Tal needs to be defended ’cause I’m not defending him. Racime was just the messenger. I just wanted to say that I am sorry for your loss too.

Hi John: Welcome and thanks to your friend for leading you to me. Thanks for your offer too. Reaching more people would be great, but even better if I could take on some advertising and have it not be too ‘in your face’.  If I could make a good living writing my blog that would be simply divine. I put hours into research and writing. At some point I may need to get a job if something does not pan out for me here.

So that being said, I would love to talk to you. However, you are just like the majority of people who comment: with no contact email address. I’ve stated before that not only am I powerless to the block that is put on my blog, I am also powerless to the block that is on my email address connected to my blog. Basically I am telling you, if you really want to talk to me, YOU have to attach an email address to your comment. :)  Lastly, as one of the ‘blog rules’, you can be rest assured your email address is safe with me.  I hope to hear from you!

Hi Trudy:  Happy that you made it in.  Gosh, I feel like it is a contest of just who and how many can ‘slip in’ on a daily basis! Really, I am not sure what I could have said to help you or give you courage, but I am happy that something inspired you to leave a marriage that it seems you were not happy in.  I wish you the best. :)

Hi ‘proud republican’ John: Look…I know you’re not talking to me but to another ‘white man’. I just wanted to set the record straight AGAIN….I do not sensor the comments. Never have and never will unless a spammer gets through. Then you may see a comment and then see it disappear.  AND…once again, if you do not like what you read, don’t read. Real simple.

Hi ZL: I think they guy was definitely trying to impress you, but what do I know – Maybe he is correct or maaybee…he wants you to be a slave to ‘love’…now that I can relate to…uh huh! :)

Hello Navajo:  Not sure if you are a woman but my gut tells me yes. I have been told many stories of the native American Indian; stories not unlike the ones you have shared. I do not know how many people actually know the truths or just believe what they have read in the history books or have seen in the movies.  But I agree with you, it should make people uncomfortable. It certainly makes me. It is a part of life and hiding ones head in the sand or turning a blind eye is not a solution.

Okay, that is it for today – Go out and be kind. Sending love right back at ya…smack!

Gratefully your blog host,

michelle  ?

Nice entry, Misch. Very informative! I thought the speech was a good show of what the world is looking for and hoping for. If McCain would have done this, which is why he is complaining about it, few would have turned out. Just like a recent forum held in an auditorium that was NOT attended well. His showing would NOT have been anything like the 200,000 people that Obama has coming. This states that the world is hungry for real change in America. There were no effigies or flags being burned at this speech…funny…

What People with Cancer Want You to Know

    Lori Hope

One in two men and one in three women will get cancer during their lifetimes, according to the American Cancer Society. The advent of new treatments has allowed many cancer patients to live relatively normal lives, and about nine million Americans are cancer survivors.

When someone has cancer, friends and family members want to help and give support, but sometimes they unknowingly say things that may be disturbing. There are many ways to express concern and love when someone is faced with cancer or any serious illness… and just as many ways to make someone cringe. Here’s what cancer survivors wish people would do…
    BE PRESENT
People may disappear or withdraw when a loved one gets sick. Some are afraid of saying or doing the wrong thing. Others are geared toward fixing problems and get frustrated when they can’t help. Still others have experienced their own tragedies with cancer and don’t feel strong enough to face the emotional turmoil again.
Though it’s uncomfortable to confront a person’s outpourings of fear and grief, make the effort. Cancer patients need to cry and release their pain. One of the greatest acts of love is to be with him/her, to listen as he shares his fears.
If you live far away, call or write. Let him know that he’s loved… that he matters… and that your heart is with him.
If you simply can’t be there, at least explain why the situation is too difficult for you to cope with.
    GIVE HOPE
People often talk about their own experiences when they meet a person who has cancer. Their intention may be to show empathy or unload their own burdens, but the stories can hurt more than help.
Example: When people heard about my diagnosis, many said things like, “Lung cancer — that’s really bad.” A waiter at an Italian restaurant even told me that his wife died of the same cancer. He shared all the gruesome details — about the surgery, how the cancer returned and how she died. It brought back all of my own terror.
People who have cancer don’t need to be reminded that they could die — they live with that fear every day. They would rather hear stories of hope and success.
Better: When I told my cousin about my diagnosis, she related a story about one of her professors who had had the same cancer 20 years before — and who is still alive and healthy.
When I told my best friend, with whom I have always taken an annual vacation, she said that we would still be vacationing together when we’re old ladies. That’s the type of encouragement people with cancer need to hear.
    ASK PERMISSION
Few of us ask permission before sharing our feelings or advice, but asking permission is important when you are dealing with someone who has a life-threatening illness. That’s when people are at their weakest and most vulnerable.
People say things like, “You really should try this immune-boosting herb” or “You should ask your doctor about this new treatment I read about.” The word “should” suggests that the person with cancer would be remiss not to take your advice.
Instead, ask him if he is interested in your advice or information or wants to hear your stories. Back off if he says no. Possible ways to ask…
“I have been looking into this type of cancer. Would you like to hear some of the treatment options I’ve read about?”
“A friend told me about an herb that might help. Would you like to hear about it?”
    LAUGH
We all tend to be overly serious when we’re with people who have serious illnesses. That’s appropriate some of the time, but not all the time. People with cancer may want to forget the pain and just laugh and be happy.
I interviewed a woman who received a cancer diagnosis on a Friday. She had all weekend to worry before she saw her doctor again on Monday, so to make herself feel better, she went to a video store and rented a bunch of comedies.
Going through cancer is not all about fear. There’s always room for humor and joy.
    DON’T HARP ON POSITIVE THINKING
It’s normal to be angry, depressed or sad when you have cancer. No one feels positive all the time. Nevertheless, friends and family members often nag cancer patients about the importance of positive thinking and tune them out when they express worries, pessimism or fear.
The implication is that the cancer is somehow the patient’s fault or that he can control the outcome. There’s a myth that some people have a “cancer personality.” There’s no truth to it — and it implicitly blames the patient for causing the disease.
It is important to understand that people who have cancer need to allow themselves to feel everything. They shouldn’t have to hide their true emotions. It’s okay to feel rotten sometimes.
    SPARE THE PLATITUDES
Platitudes are reassuring words that usually are said without much thought or understanding.
Everyone with cancer has heard things like, “You never know how much time any of us has — you could go outside tomorrow and get hit by a truck.”
One woman I talked to had heard this cliché at least 10 times from people she knew — even from her doctor. Her comment? “Okay, so then in addition to the fact that I could die from cancer, I might also get hit by a truck.” That isn’t comforting.
No one who has had cancer sees it as “a gift.” Cancer patients don’t want to hear how lucky they are or what they can learn from the experience. They just want to get better.
Silence and compassion are more helpful than empty words.

Hi Mischa, good one, I actually saw a headline last night caling Obama ‘presumptive’ bc of this rally, I know a few repugs who felt preety smug about that. I think it’s great words, now are we all willing to live it, he’s quite clear he/we (US) cannot do it alone. If he doesn’t get in and we get McCant I’m going to McMove…

I had an private e-mail from someone who didn’t get my reference to you re: interview and doesn’t know about your blog (WHAT?!) so today is dedicated to you and Tao group, may you receive even more readers. I give my disclaimer about clicking on through to MM shock jock blog (I love that, so funny…) and if John won’t e-mail my pal Jon will (Yon, he’s a Norge)any pal of mine is a pal of his, or so he says. I thought the hesitation was due to the alien presence though…???

Anyway, http://edgy1.wordpress.com/ ‘people believe in aliens, oh yes, they do…’

  5. Bob Says:

Okay so Obama went to germany. How does that help us pay the mortgage here in the states?

    Bob

  6. Delphine Says:

Nous le sénateur français Obama d’amour, aussi. Et oui, il est tellement très intelligent, et tellement très beau.

    Delphine

  7. Basile Says:

Women even in France seem to swoon over Mr. Obama. I see the leadership potential in this man. If he were not noir, his countrymen might see it in greater numbers to.

He offers a fresh view of how to handle the complex problems of the world while balancing his country’s national interests. The various European papers all seem to hope he will get a chance to lead his country.

Our President (I didn’t vote for him) is obviously ecstatic about the possibility of working with such an enlightened man. I found myself liking him more because of his open admiration of Senator Obama. Maybe next time I will vote for him. After all Senator Obama feels that he was a good choice for the French.

I have been following both american candidates for about nine months. It is interesting watching the american electoral process play out. We French on a whole wonder why the americans continue to support an old man who is so out of touch with the rest of the world.

We French can not throw the stones as we have large non white populations that do not get what we white french have an opportunity to, but we are trying. So I will only suggest, if Senator McCain was not the “great white hope” for this election, would he be even close in the polls?

Please forgive me. I do not mean to interfere in your politics, it was just an opinion.

    Basile

  8. Filbert Says:

Isn’t it like the french not to wait their turn. I’ve been hitting the comment button all morning and they get in before me.

The crowds would have been even bigger here if it wasn’t for all the security limitations. This guy is a BIG hit. American could become the darling of Europe again with this guy at the helm.

He comes across as a student of world affairs. One that is interested in allowing the other countries to share in its affairs. What a refreshing concept from an american president after 7 years with Mr Bush.

The politicizing of Senator Obama’s visit made all the papers and Mr Bush has been excoriated for it. Most of Europe see it as just another example of Mr Bush’s imperial presidency. He doesn’t obey the laws of his country or the decorum that world leaders exercise among themselves. He is despised and not trusted in Europe. No one believes a word that comes from his mouth or his administration.

What a disastrous seven plus years he brought to the american people and the rest of the world. For Europeans he can not be replaced soon enough.

    Filbert

  9. Mississippi Says:

I used to love President Bush. But I have second thoughts. I read the french guy’s comments. I don’t eat french fries any more I eat american fries now. Who does he think he is. Don’t apologize. Just stay out of our politics.

I don’t trust President Bush any more. He has lied to us so many times. To think I was willing to trust him the decisions to suspend whatever constitutional right he felt he had to to keep this nation safe. What a shame he as violated that trust.

I am ready for a change. This republican will be voting for a black man in the up coming election. I am from Mississippi. We barely tolerate negroes in the part of the state I’m from so I dare not leave a name. But I am tired of this man. He is a disgrace to the white race. Who could image that a white man would do so much to his country that he would force good white people to believe that they might have to look to a negro for salvation.

Around here it is being said that McCain is so angry at President Bush because he may cause him to suffer the disgrace of losing the White House to a negro. I personally feel that the disgrace should be heaped upon President Bush’s head.

I knew he was doomed when he appointed all those negros to his cabinet. It just gave them ideas that they could move up to the Presidency of the United States of America. I don’t care what the rest of the world says. The White House should remain White.

President Bush should be ashamed of himself. Imagine forcing a god-fearing woman like me to feel she has to vote for a negro for anything much less the President. He should be ashamed.

    A Miss from Mississippi

  10. Ewald Says:

    Ewald

  11. Doug Says:

    Miss from Mississippi,
Wow, you have some major issues. Get out of the fifties and make the change you are claiming an vote for Obama. You know, that negro guy…

How can you trust anyone with the power to suspend all of the Constitutional rights they see fit in order to keep the nation safe. This is exactly why the document was written in the first place was so that NO ONE would have that power again. They have placed us back to the anarchy of pre-Declaration of Independence, to when we were still ruled by the King of England. Oh, and by the way, the French helped us big time back then to get out from under English rule in 1776. We couldn’t have done it without them. They aren’t in our politics, but based on the last voting of our President and how much stupidity our public has, I wish the Europeans could vote in our system. Our policies affect them enough, it wouldn’t be a bad idea for them. They know more about our country than most Americans do!

The only reason McCant will lose to Obama is because McCant is an idiot! He can’t remember the details of when we started our most recent wars, where they were and their borders, or when countries have democratized themselves and changed names. He has stated publicly that he is not the best guy to ask questions on economics!? He stated that we should be in Iraq for the next 100 years, until polls showed that Obama and his ideas to get out were taking steam, so he switches his mind, and his semantics. That is whatever is left of it.

He is a has been, who shouldn’t be…That is why he will lose.

I’m glad, for whatever reason, that you will be voting for Obama.

  12. HOWIE Says:

    Hi Michelle, TAO and Racime:

I want to add to the comment Racime made a day or two ago about the prescription drug Tramadol 50 mg.

From my knowledge and experience Tramadol is a synthetic Opioid prescribed for Mild to medium pain relief.

It is usually prescribed as 50 mg. pills and is not very harmful. It is milder than Percocet (5 mg. oxycodone) which is in a similar class of pain relief drugs.

Sorry that I do not agree that I believe it is mild and harmless to use.

Racime, is everyones memor that bad? Do they not remembe5r that they mourned your death as a crewmember back a few months when Carr boarded the Climax and you were never heard from again. Am I the only one who remembers?

It is good to hear from you alive.

  13. Blake Says:

    Howie

It’s good that you are back. I wondered where you were. I thought you had left this planet. I am beginning to think that I was right. And you are a cyborg pretending to be Howie. This entry confirms it. The real Howie would not make such a mistake.

Okay cyborg let me inform you that Racime is dead or he never existed in the first place. The comment you are talking about was not presently sent in by Racime. It was Tal’s way of making a point.

As for the medical advice whoever is sending it in, it is not Racime because he is no more. No wonder you don’t mention your talks with God anymore because God doesn’t talk to cyborgs.

What have you done to Al or did he leave with Howie?

    Blake

Now this blog is getting back to the basics. Let’s talk aliens. I have been watching CNN and reading about our moon walking astronauts admitting that aliens have visited the earth and maybe walking amongst us.

Michelle. where are the Girls? Get those Bad Bitches back on line. Politics, smolitics, I’ve had enough of it. Let’s just all go out and vote for McCan’t -do-a-fucking-thing-but-be-white. It works for this white boy.

Now that that’s settled we can get back to the aliens. Why Girls can’t you bring your selves to picking up a few men. Not all white men are bad. I am a 24 year old white stud. I have a healthy organ between my legs and I have split black oak. Quite appreciatively by the oak I might add.

I love sci-fi movies. If Howie and Al was good enough to go into space, why not a healthy stud like me? I got a college degree in government management. Now that’s an oxymoron if ever there was one. But what-the-f##k, it got my parents to support me for six years.

Come on Girls put me on some planet that needs organization, I’m trained for ti. Hey, if that’s won’t work, put me on some planet that you hate and let me use the government management skills I was taught to organize their society, that’ll really f##k’em up. Whatever it takes I’ve got to get into space.

Michelle, you may be old enough to be my mom, but you don’t look like any of the moms I’ve ever met. You are hot. I made you my screen saver. Come on show your fans the rest of that hot body.

My girl friends hate it that I made you my screen saver. As far as I am concerned they are just showing how insecure they are. Yeah, babes, this is your Henry talking. Oh, did I mention that I am fluent in german. Another useless thing my father says I learned in college.

He may think it is useless but I get a lot of german p***y because of it. I get a lot of respect from skin heads too. When you are 6’4″ blond, 210 lbs of muscle and can bark german like a nazi, they practically suck your d##k.

Howie, I’m no bigot. I just hang out with them to f##k their silly bitches(I mean that in a bad way). My parents are a bit above middle class keep up with the jones set. Why they are still together is a testimony to why marriage is for the masochistic. I love those two, but the way they go at it is madding. I used to lay in bed with my sisters (I’m the baby with 4 older sisters) and pray “beam me up Scotty.” when they started one of their all day arguments about god-knows-what.

This will not get in anyway, but if it does HELLOOOOOOO Wendy. Told you I’d get in.

    Howie

Are you back? Or are you mailing it in from space? Where is Al? I liked Al. He was sweet in a mixed up sexy kind of way. I bet he has the kind of hair that always needs a girl smoothing it out.

I think you are a bit mixed up about Racime. Wasn’t he the one that went to live in Sweteno? Are you working for the aliens now trying to confuse us? I live in Miami too. Maybe if you and Al are still here we could meet. I have a girlfriend Sarah who would love to come along. You could even bring God along. That would be so cool. I’m 19 and my best friend Sarah is 19 also. We are big fans.

Michelle, Sarah and I are planning to go to college in Berkeley. She has been accepted at UC Berkeley. I haven’t been accepted there yet, but I at S.F. University. We are holding out waiting to see if we can get accepted at the same college. We should have gone last year. So far we have been accepted at 4 different universities each, but none together. We have to get out of Miami, it is to damn hot here. The men are boys and the boys are too immature.

NEWLY DISCOVERED HEALTH RISK OF LONG-HAUL FLIGHTS

I guess it’s a good thing that jets can whisk us in a matter of 14 hours or so from, say, New York to Tokyo or Los Angeles to Australia — but being a passenger on a long-haul flight is not exactly easy. For a few people, extended hours in flight can even be dangerous… witness the studies a few years ago that showed the potential for some people to develop a blood clot in the leg from such a stretch of imposed stillness. What comes as a real surprise, however, is a new study revealing that after many in-flight hours some people will experience a mild form of altitude sickness, yes, inside the airplane. Here’s why: By FAA regulation, the maximum cabin altitude pressure equivalency in commercial planes is 8,000 feet. In case you’ve forgotten your high school science, the altitude of the city of Denver is about a mile high or 5,280 feet and lots of visitors there need a few days to acclimate even to that height. Since different people experience acclimation differently, for some the adjustment may be easier and for others, even harder.
    WORSE THAN AIRLINE FOOD
Scientists at the Boeing Company in Seattle and at Oklahoma State University in Tulsa conducted the altitude study. They gathered 502 volunteers (apparently good-natured folks) to sit in coach-class style airline seats in a hypobaric chamber through a simulated 20-hour flight, the equivalent of flying from New York to Sydney. The study evaluated reactions to various altitude pressurizations — barometric pressures — from ground equivalencies of pressures equivalent to 650 feet all the way to 8,000 feet. The researchers discovered that at 8,000 feet equivalency, the arterial oxygen saturation dropped by about 4%, because of the lower air pressure. They also found that approximately 25% of the “passengers” reacted to the decreased oxygen pressure at 8,000 feet with reported symptoms of malaise, muscular discomfort, fatigue, and ear, nose and throat discomfort — though, of course, some of which may have come from jet lag or travel weariness.
    J. Michael Muhm, MD, MPH, associate technical fellow at Boeing, was the lead author of the study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, July 5, 2007. He told me that study results were based on answers to symptom-related questions with a five-point scale to describe perceived discomfort. Symptoms resembling “acute mountain sickness” were reported in 7.4% of all participants — in part, says Dr. Muhm, this can be attributed to the 20-hour confinement, not the altitude. No one actually developed severe altitude sickness, the kind caused by severe lack of oxygen as being at the top of a high peak, he emphasized… rather, the problems related to altitude problems uncovered in the study were described as “discomfort.”
Dr. Muhm’s advice to make long flights more comfortable include the usual, such as drinking plenty of non-alcoholic fluids — but he also stresses moving about as much as possible. The participants were able to move about as they would in an airplane, and the study found that getting some exercise during the simulated flight helped reduce muscular discomfort, though it did not affect any of the other altitude-related symptoms.
IF YOU HAVE THESE HEALTH RISKS, TALK TO YOUR DOCTOR
People who have chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), upper respiratory or sinus infection, certain cardiovascular conditions or a previous heart attack should discuss with their doctor if they would do better to break up a long-haul journey into several shorter flights. Also, according to Daily Health News contributing medical editor Andrew L. Rubman, ND, it may be helpful to ask a naturopathic physician to prescribe a natural supplement called octacosanol (a derivative of wheat germ oil) to reduce peripheral circulatory symptoms, along with L-carnitine, an amino acid that reduces the need for oxygen consumption.
Fortunately, Dr. Muhm says many planes (the newer ones), such as Boeing’s new 787 Dreamliner, will reportedly be pressurized to 6,000 feet equivalency, an “altitude” that didn’t bother any of the study participants — though unfortunately it’s not practical to retrofit older ones to these standards.

M Fr M, glad you can drop your bigotry long enough to do the right thing, and Henry, well you’re 24 so i’m not going to say much more, although much is set in stone intrinsically by this point in life, might I make a suggestion: do not marry, btw, I will not do it again myself so I’m not saying it out of malice, besides it’s just a suggestion from the unknown Zen woman…
