Girls Need Help: A Quick Read & Your Signature
Posted by Michelle Moquin on June 3rd, 2009
Good afternoon.
I don’t think I have ever said that on my blog before or it has been a very long time. I know I haven’t blogged twice in one day, but I couldn’t help it today. Six degrees of separation has knocked on my door annd I felt the need to do more with the issue on hand than just give my signature support.
So what am I talking about?
I just received an e-mail from the woman that employs me informing me that her good friend from college sent her the following e-mail:
Hello everyone,Words can not describe how scary this situation is turning out to be. Euna Lee is the wife of one of Manny’s oldest friends, Mike Saldate. We hope for Mike, his daughter Hannah, and the Ling family that Laura and Euna are sent home safely.Would you please sign this petition? http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/free-euna-and-lauraIt is going to be forwarded to the United Nations.Candlelight vigils are also going to be held all over the country. Here is the one scheduled for SF.WHEN: Wednesday, June 3, 2009TIME: 6 – 8 p.m.
WHERE: Front Steps of S.F. City Hall on Polk StreetThanks for your time,
Belinda
I have tried to keep up with this story (Robert: I was hoping you were going to keep us posted), but there are so many topics that are so important these days. In case you still don’t know what I am talking about from the e-mail above, read below:
On March 17th, two American journalists – Euna Lee and Laura Ling – were taken into custody by the North Korean military. The two women were reporting on the trafficking of women along the border with China.
Euna and Laura have been charged with engaging in “hostile acts,” and their trial is set for June 4, 2009, in Pyongyang.
We call on the Government of North Korea to release Euna and Laura on humanitarian grounds. These women are wives, mothers, daughters, sisters; they are missed by their families and friends, who would like to see them safe and back at home.
As noted above their trial is tomorrow, and the families and friends are trying to free them. You can help by signing the petition today? Thanks for all that you do.
Gratefully your blog host,
michelle

It seems you have some ladies smitten lately, good for you, we all want and deserve some attention, right? btw Al, little that truly happens between two people has to do with ‘looks’ it’s the chemistry of the personal click (or your hypothalmus in action, lock and load!) and that can make a toad (not that you are one) attractive to the right recipient, capice? So good luck with all that. Thanks for stopping by my blog – seems I PO’d a several women and one man, hahaha, ah well, I’ll try my luck again tomorrow, maybe they’ll all get out of bed on the right side then : ) hahaha…

YES, YOU CAN SLEEP TOO MUCH
We’ve all heard that not getting enough sleep is hazardous to our health, but the latest news linking too much sleep to early death is sure to keep a few people up at night. A recent study found that, over time, excessive sleep is associated with the risk of dying from non-heart related causes, while there also appears to be an association between scant sleep and death from cardiovascular disease.
FOR OPTIMAL HEALTH SLEEP SEVEN TO EIGHT HOURS NIGHTLY
In a study of more than 10,000 British civil servants, researchers found that adults who consistently slept between six and eight hours a night were statistically less likely to die prematurely. Conversely, those who fell outside this category and slept more or less experienced increased risk. Specifically, researchers discovered that…
• Sleeping more than seven or eight hours nightly correlated with an increased risk for non-cardiovascular mortality of 110%.
• Decreased sleep (five or fewer hours a night) was associated with exactly the same measure of elevated risk — 110% — but for cardiovascular deaths, including stroke and heart attack.
These results were published in the journal Sleep. While many are surprised by the apparent connection of excessive sleep to mortality, neither of these conclusions came as a surprise to Ralph Downey III, PhD, D, ABSM, chief of sleep medicine at Loma Linda University Medical Center in California. He told me that as long ago as 1964, sleep researchers recognized that too much or too little sleep negatively affects mortality — although this may be due not to sleep itself, but to other variables such as changes in metabolism, insulin resistance and blood sugar and hormonal imbalances. If you regularly sleep six or fewer hours a night, it is clear that increasing sleep time has beneficial effects on health. For big sleepers, however, it’s not quite as clear that decreasing sleep time reduces mortality. Until scientists sort this all out, in Dr. Downey’s opinion, your best bet is to sleep between seven and eight hours a night.
HOW TO GET A GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP
At Loma Linda University Medical Center, the Sleep Disorders Center has opened a Behavioral Sleep Medicine Clinic devoted to the treatment of insomnia. Since most insomniacs are no doubt already familiar with what they’re supposed to do to get a good night’s sleep (see Daily Health News, March 8, 2005 and June 26, 2007, for more on this topic), I asked Dr. Downey for advice specifically for those who are sleeping too much. He recommends…
• See your doctor to rule out possible underlying problems such as depression, which can keep people in bed all day long.
• Go to bed and — importantly — get up at the same time every day, even on weekends. Your brain depends on consistent signals to fall asleep and wake up, Dr. Downey explains. Learn to practice basic sleep hygiene. In addition to keeping a consistent schedule, this means using the bedroom for sleep and sex, but not for doing your bills or watching TV.
• Keep a sleep diary. Use it to explore negative thoughts such as: “I just want to sleep, I don’t want to do anything else.” Ask yourself why, whether you are avoiding anything. Try to replace these with more positive — and realistic — sentiments like: “If I awaken earlier, I’ll have time for a walk before work.”
• Get regular exercise. Research has shown that while you may feel tired immediately after exercising, over the course of the day people who exercise actually have more energy. Exercising in the evening may interfere with your sleep. A good rule is to avoid exercise within two hours of bedtime.
At the Behavioral Sleep Medicine Clinic, Dr. Downey and colleagues use a scientifically proven approach to insomnia called cognitive behavioral therapy to help people sleep. “We call it sleep boot camp,” he says. Patients commit to five to six weeks of one-hour weekly visits, sometimes in a group setting. Patients are first evaluated to make certain they do not have another sleep disorder, medical problem or psychological disorder that may prevent them from sleeping, says Dr. Downey. Then patients start tracking their sleep patterns in notebooks, discussing them in the group setting. At the end of the treatment, the patient leaves with a summary of the challenges they faced and a set of recommendations for the future.
Just about everyone has problems with insomnia from time to time — even people who sleep lots of hours. Far better than popping a pill is to use natural commonsense strategies — and when necessary, a visit to your health care provider to develop a healthful, balanced and consistent sleep pattern that can quite literally add years to your life.
Note: If you experience chronic symptoms such as daytime sleepiness, problems with mood, memory, concentration or the ability to make decisions well, for more than two weeks, see your health care provider. These may be signs of an underlying, treatable sleep disorder.

I sat in the audience with Islamists, Coptics, christians, basically young people of just about every background . We came together for the first time because of Obama.
Cairo because of Obama was truly a holy place of tolerance. When he addressed the needs of women in a way never done before by a world leader I saw young muslim all over the world beginning to have hope. We never have heard from out leaders speak in this manner.
Allah has spawned hope in the land once considered evil. America brings hope both to the old leaders of the Islamic world. He also brings hope to us young islamic people who need a leader to give us hope that we can end some of the repression that we exist under from these leaders.

I heard President Obama’s speech. I almost lost my breath. He spoke to my heart. I believe in hope. Maybe one day I will be able to have some of the advantages my brothers take for granted.

I am in Israel. I listened to Obama’s speech in Cairo. He was fair to both the interest of the Israelis and the Arabs. I think he will force our leaders here to look more realistically at our goals.

The Christian science monitor is proposing that Sotomayor is bias. I am a white man, but I am getting tired of hearing this media coverage that is over the top on its concern by a few white fire fighters.
I work for a computer company that hires people from around the world. Now when I enter the common areas and I hear some of them discussing this issue, they stop talking as I approach.
One of my closest friends from India said that they are embarrassed for me to hear their opinions. They wonder why the white news media is making such a big deal about this one case when they never talk about judges that hold office in clubs that are outright racist every day.
She said that she sees this as outright racism on America’s part. I thought about it before I reacted angrily from my gut.
As i drove home alone, I had time to think. Why indeed are we being bombarded with the plight of these fire fighters? The obvious answer is that they are white.
I have tried to come up with an example where I have heard as much media attention paid to the plight of a group claiming discrimination that wasn’t white. Frankly, I can’t.
I say appoint this woman. I agree with Zen Lill that she will be appointed. But I think the bigger issue is she will be appointed in spite of the hatred of some of my race that sees only their needs.
When I heard that 71% of americans support the belief that the fire fighters were discriminated against, said who are those 29%? In retrospect I now ask why was it so easy for me to side with my race on this issue?
Were they discriminated against? Or did the city say the time has come to really examine the issue of inequality caused by my race’s deliberate manipulation of the system for their benefit.
I know the argument that we white males say to others and wryly to each other when discussing reverse discrimination. But unless you are one of the ignorant, or religious fanatics, we don’t really believe that we are under siege by non whites in America.
We white males know that we are firmly in control of the leadership of our country. Obama may be president, but he can do very little without the support of 49 white Senators and the overwhelming majority of the House of Representatives who are white.
Yes, Zen Lill(I would love to meet you) I too am tired of hearing or reading about this topic. But like the women who wrote in about the hope that Obama affords them in an hostile environment, I suspect that minorities need to hear that their situations are understood.

What’s with these white bitches who are news anchors? They were all over the men when they came out against Palin. I guess if he woman is an OTW, then the women defer to the color of their skin.
Is it any wonder that white men maintained the right to force sex on their wives and beat them with sticks as long as they were not thicker than their thumbs until the success of the civil rights moment.
SISTERS we should never allow a man to disrespect the rights or dignity of a woman regardless of her or his race, color, or religion.

Ruth were you referring to the Contessa on MSNBC? She is surly an airhead. I usually reserve that term for men. But she has earned the mantle.

Michelle, we may have a surprise for you on this issue. South Korea has expressed a concerned interest to cooperate in bring to North Korea the need to release the women.
If this does not fly we have a surprise or two for the North.

Unfortunately, I think abluevoice has got it about right. Too many of us in this country were Bush/Cheney enablers and apparently we are yet to completely learn our lesson- that we cannot just live and act completely out of fear. Cheney is a scared man and he sells fear and he does that well. He speaks to the worst in us and sometimes we fall for that as we would rather blame the “other” than look at ourselves and our own complicity in such matters.
Yes, I thought Nancy Pelosi was wrong to take impeachment off the table, and democrats often don’t stand up enough to Repubican charges of our weakness on national defense and the media doesn’t always do its job of exposing lies and it certainly cheerleaded the Iraq War for the Bush/Cheney Administration.
June 4th, 2009 at 7:40 am
I’m afraid it will be right after the major networks and CNN stop treating him like he’s still relevant. I don’t understand how the nation can move on and TV can’t! Calling any of the President’s speeches and a speech by Cheney as a “great debate” or implying that they are equal in any remote way makes you wonder who’s running things and why we listen to them. Next we can get Dan Quayle to debate the President. Actually I’ld rather hear him.
June 4th, 2009 at 7:46 am
Now that Cheney has admitted that Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11 why aren’t the members of the media that air his every lie ask him why we invaded Iraq. Why we killed maimed and displaced millions of Iraqis? Why we sent tens of thousands of our children and loved ones into harms way?
Why 4,000 plus of those brave soldiers of ours gave their lives to that.
Even the pundits have not posed the question to Cheney or the rest of us Cheney “Why did we invade Iraq.? and Why did you lie to us about it at the time?”

Okay ladies the white boy is now trying to find a great white hope in the female category. So they tell us that Anglie Jolie is more influential than Oprah Winfrey.
Jolie made $27 million last year, Winfrey made $275 million in the same period. I am a big fan of Jolie, but this is another white boy fantasy.
Why do our tiny weenie men feel so threatened? Boys we love you. It is not the size of your weenies, it is he size of your wallets that count. You do not need to impress us with your prowess.
This constant preening like some wild male bird looking to gain female acceptance is silly. Be yourselves. Bring those tiny weenies and BIG wallets home to mama.

The Bush administration never said Iraq was responsible for 9/11. I’m sure Huffpo and MSNBC didn’t bother to cover the reasons we went in there, so no wonder you missed it.
Iraq is a strategically important are in the middle east. It was the one place where we could accomplish several things at once: it was one place where there was a possibility of libertaing a people and helping them establish a democratic government for citizens in neighboring countries to see. Saddam had the materiel and the plans, the intent and the people to assemble them for WMD. They weren’t assembled, but could have been in a matter of weeks. If your neighbor has all the parts to assemble a bomb in his garage, and the intent to do it, you would probably assume he had no bomb.
The press didn’t bother to read beyond page one of the report that detailed all that.
The Bush administration was honest about why they went in there. You may disagree with their reasons, but they didn’t lie.

YOUR HOME’S COPPER PIPES LINKED TO ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE
Scientists have been trying to learn more about the connection between metals, including aluminum, iron and copper, and Alzheimer’s disease (AD)… and now a new study at the University of Rochester brings new information, suggesting that copper may facilitate the development of AD by damaging a specific protein in the brain.
COPPER-LACED WATER AFFECTS MICE
Scientists had previously learned that excess beta amyloid, a protein fragment, typically litters the brains of people with Alzheimer’s disease. The question that hadn’t been answered was “what creates this build-up?” To answer it, associate professor Rashid Deane, PhD, and his colleagues at the University of Rochester Medical Center added low levels of copper (0.12 milligrams per liter, or about 1/10 the amount the EPA legally permits) to the drinking water of healthy mice and discovered that even this tiny amount increased the levels of brain beta amyloid. How? It seems that the copper damages a substance called LRP (low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein), which is responsible for escorting excess beta amyloid out of the brain in order to keep levels normal. However, high levels of copper tax this process, thus leaving elevated levels of beta amyloid in the brain.
Dr. Deane says more research is needed before we can conclusively link copper to Alzheimer’s disease. It remains unclear whether other metals — such as aluminum — contribute to AD (for more about Alzheimer’s, see Daily Health News, September 13, 2005). Even for copper, scientists need to look further into whether certain people are more susceptible than others. He points out that a certain amount of copper is actually necessary for good health, as it helps maintain bone strength, metabolism and skin, hair and eye pigment, and also helps nerves. Copper is found in meat, seafood, nuts and fruits and vegetables. Researchers are planning further study on the levels of copper in the body of AD patients versus healthy people. We’ll keep you in the loop.

Yes they lied, cajoled, used “mushroom cloud” terror. They could have cared less about the democratizing of a land that didnt want democratizing. It was a land that wanted Suddam Hussein out of power but that wasnt the business of the United States it was theirs. Their feuds have been going on for 4000 years and it was up to them to fix it – NOT GEORGE BUSH.
They had no reason other than greed and the possibility of oil. Get real. Cheney was and is now lying to Cover His Butt. He is and was a war monger. He is a coward. He is paranoid. He WAS WRONG and does not have the courage to admit it. THAT IS HIS LEGACY. No amount of defense on your part will change history.
June 4th, 2009 at 8:30 am
It isn’t clear to me at all why Dick Cheney is being given a forum in the media every week while Ron Paul, Nader and Rep. Kucinich among others with important, thought-provoking ideas could rarely get such a level of public access. Why is that? I may be wrong, but I don’t mind this continued publicity because I think Cheney is entrapping himself. I have no sympathy for this man who may believe whatever he wants to. The bottom line is that ignorance of the law is no excuse. He has committed terrible crimes against our nation and the world. May he be brought to justice
June 4th, 2009 at 8:34 am
Hey, if Glenn Beck or Sarah Palin don’t make it as President in 2012, let’s hope Dick Cheney does!!! Believing Obama will make a great second term President – is believing a lie. Don’t like that one – how about Newt????
June 4th, 2009 at 8:37 am
On Cheney, my thought is when his financial worth before he became vice president and after is revealed most questions of why he wanted war will be immediately realized.
