Flap Your Lips Friday

Posted by Michelle Moquin on July 24th, 2009

Ahaha! I just have to laugh at myself – just love the title. Sometimes…thinking of a title to my day’s write is more challenging than writing the write itself. I just may have to use this one again. Who knows…it may become Friday’s frequent moniker.

Sahar: Your comment does not surprise me. The women have to confront and fight the many years of single-minded thought ingrained in the minds of the men. I did not think that it would be easy, but I was hopeful that the women could influence them to change. If the men don’t support the women getting equality, are you willing to do what is necessary to attain it?

Kurt: Touché. I will keep that in mind.

Joyce: Thank you for posting an article in favor of my four-legged friends. I am not big on insurance for pets but  I know many people are. This was a really interesting article. Thanks for thinking of me and my friends. :)

Midred: I have never feared drowning in a car but, when I have seen movies with people caught trapped in a sinking car, I always wonder what is the best thing to do. Now I know – thanks.

Leah: I too am going to try your chocolate cake recipe – sounds delicious.

Hey Fran:  I am delighted that you finally decided to write in and share something with me and my readers. My apologies for not addressing you yesterday. It is challenging sometimes to say all that I want to say in one write.  But I appreciate your contribution. These days many people turn a blind eye because they don’t want to get involved. All it takes is a little caring and a phone call and you could save one’s life. Thanks again for writing in.

Mark: I don’t quite know what to say about the article you posted. All I can say is there are some sick people out there who h

Al: My pleasure.

Hey Peter and Anna: I know the both of you are so excited for one of your Guam girls and the chance for her to be on America’s Next Top Model. I thought that since my readers can’t post photos, I would post one for you.  Congratulations to Tiara Lizama for getting the most votes! Good luck to Tiara at the casting call – I hope that she makes the show.

Anonymous #11 and Roy:  Lighting it up a bit is always appreciated on my blog – I do it all the time :)

Zen Lill: So now that you’re hanging with the Jerky boyz, got any insider scoop on the big ‘Bada Sting’ ( Thanks for that didley Rachel :) that just occuured.  If my memory is correct, one of the money-laundering mayors from one of the Jersey cities was only in office for 23 days! Those jerky boyz thought they could jerk-off with the cash and get away with it.  Sorry, busted. The only jerking off you’re gonna do is in jail.

Readers: Lastly, I just want to add my two about Professor Gates, even if I’m being redundant. So bear with me.

He shouldn’t have been arrested in the first place, period. His driver’s license was attached to his Harvard ID – what more proof does one need? And the charges were dropped. Gates didn’t have to go to court to have the charges dropped. Why? Because he shouldn’t have been arrested in the first place. No cop is going to drop the charges if he honestly felt that he had a sound reason for the arrest in the first place. He didn’t – What is clear to me is the cop Crowley is a racist, and dare I say ‘pig’.

And Gates  showing his outrage at being racially profiled is not against the law; it is simply freedom of speech.  Any other person would’ve reacted the same way, and the police after seeing the ID, would’ve apologized and left. And that would’ve been the end of that. But no, Gates is a black man and this cop Crowley is a racist. What concerns me is he teaches classes on racial profiling! Just exactly what is he teaching when it is clear that he is a racist himself?

That’s all I’ve got time for this morning but I found these interviews if you are interested in listening. Gayle King interviewed Professor Gates on the Oprah radio show on Sirius.  The interview is listed on the front page under ‘WHAT’S HOT’.   It lists the both parts of the interview. Although they are titled the same, the first interview is the first part listed and the second interview is the second part listed.

And if you want to hear Crowley’s version of what happened you can tune in here. This link will take you to an article that contains a link to the interview.

Happy Friday. I am ready for the weekend, you?

Gratefully your blog host,

michelle

FINDING YOGURT THAT REALLY IS GOOD FOR YOU

I remember the excitement when frozen yogurt was first introduced in the 1970s — my friends and I thought we’d gotten a free pass in the healthy food lottery. Now, nearly 30 years later, yogurt is once again all the rage, but this time it’s not the frozen kind… it’s yogurt that contains probiotics, the “microorganisms” or “good bacteria” that are similar to the beneficial ones found naturally in the human gut. You may have seen news stories about a class action lawsuit accusing yogurt mogul Dannon of false advertising on behalf of its Activia and DanActive yogurt products. The charge is that Dannon has not supported its advertised claims with studies showing that these products are, in fact, “clinically” and “scientifically” proven to have health benefits that other yogurts do not. Dannon, needless to say, disagrees.
The jury is still out, literally, about Dannon product claims about the probiotic content of its yogurts… but it seems a good time to review the fine points of selecting healthy yogurt products, including those that contain live, active cultures in order to ensure we obtain beneficial microbes. According to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM), a division of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), there is some evidence that specific probiotics are helpful for diarrhea… urinary tract infections… irritable bowel syndrome… and also reduce the recurrence of bladder cancer… and prevent and manage atopic dermatitis (eczema) in children. That’s the good news. The bad news is it’s not so easy to find yogurts that deliver on their promise to dish up significant levels of probiotics.
The reason is, each person is host to a unique community of microorganisms and responds differently to different probiotic strains. “The effect of specific probiotics varies from person to person,” explains Leslie J. Bonci, MPH, RD, LDN, author of the American Dietetic Association Guide to Better Digestion. Given that each of us carries so many different kinds of bacteria, general recommendations about the value of adding a particular proprietary blend of a few probiotics to anyone’s diet are almost meaningless.
Bonci spoke in support of yogurt, both for nutritional and probiotic benefit. “Yogurt is a good source of protein, calcium, potassium and probiotics,” she said, though many people have difficulty digesting dairy products and therefore won’t absorb those nutrients well. In her view, it’s a good idea to eat six to eight ounces of yogurt daily — but it has to be the kind that has health value greater than the downside of taking in so much sugar. Yogurts like that can be hard to find.
    WHAT BRAND TO BUY?
Bonci advised looking for yogurts that feature the National Yogurt Association’s Live and Active Cultures (LAC) seal on the label and buying brands low in sugar (less than 15 grams of sugar) and fat in order to meet overall health objectives. Sugar does not affect the probiotic content, she said. (For more information on how to choose healthful brands of yogurt, see Daily Health News, December 19, 2005.)
Though probiotics are good for our digestive health, eating yogurt is only part of the equation. “Good gut health is a combination of food choices, eating habits, physical activity and stress management,” said Bonci. There’s lots of research on yogurt and digestive health, she notes, “but if you have a terrible diet and stomach problems, just adding yogurt to your diet won’t solve your digestive issues.”

Before I went to work this morning I watched the orchestrated show of support by the police on the major media. Rather than discuss the facts they marched representatives of various police associations to the mike to tell the world that they supported Sgt Cromley’s arresting Professor Gates.

It was a see we were right and he was wrong. Look at whos taking sides. At the podium all white men. Those stating that the officer acted stupidly, all black men.

All that says is that if the 44th president, or the governor of MA, or the mayor of the city had been white, this would have bee another incident in which a black man had been reminded of what a white man thinks is his place.

Why is it that white men of political position seldom stand up when the police abuse the rights and dignity of an OTW? That is why I support the right of Israel to be as bold and as bad as they feel they need to be.

The white man will use Israel for their own motives and toss Jews the world over to the whims of any group that decides it is safe to start discriminating against jews again.

Unfortunately black americans have no country to stand up for them. They can not count on the moral or common decency of the majority of whites to protect them from the will of a few bigots and racists among the white race.

I am of the minority of whites who find it disgusting that the majority of my race is so apathetic to the plight of OTW men in their quest for equality of treatment from the police.

Mr. Gates my advice is sue the bastards

  4. Anna on Guam Says:

The Guam Liberation Day parade was beautiful.
    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Parade showcased We Are Guam spirit
Both sides of the street were flooded with tens of thousands of parade goers enjoying Guam’s most celebrated event.
The Liberation Day parade is easily Guam’s largest event of the year and is everything Guam. The smell of ribs and chicken grilling on the pit permeated the air as families, friends and acquaintances — old and new — came together to enjoy the day.
Whether on the beach or behind the parade lines, it was all for one and one for all. The only thing missing was the rain and I don’t think anyone minded at all!
More than 60 parade entries made their way down historic Marine Corps Drive encapsulating our island warmth, hospitality, cultural heritage and diversity. Technology and tradition, patriotism and faith, youth and manamko’, history and the future — it was all represented and fueled by the excitement, shouts and smiles of our people.
The essence of Guam was highlighted through the various floats, marching bands, organizations, government agencies and military contingents that were featured in the parade. It was wonderful to see the innovative ways that many of the float builders represented the theme of the parade: “We Are Guam — A Legacy of Our Ancestors, 65 Years of Liberty Through Peace, Unity and Forgiveness” while also incorporating varying ways of recycling materials.
I took the time to visit my mayor’s office the weekend before the parade to see how our village float was doing. It was so inspiring to see the volunteers at work, weaving the palm leaves and cutting bamboo for the float. Even our mayor’s wife was in on the action, weaving pop-tops from aluminum soda cans with red, white and blue ribbon to spell out the liberation theme.
My mayor and all the volunteers were so proud of their work and couldn’t wait to show off their float and village pride to our island.

This came in from Representative Nancy Pelosi of California concerning the passage of a Health care bill in the House.
    ————————————
Health Care Legislation Passes in Committee
Throughout the past week, the Tri-Committees have been busy working on H.R. 3200, America’s Affordable Health Choices Act. All three committees have passed the bill in their respective committees, and the next step is for action on the House floor.

America’s Affordable Health Choices Act will provide significant benefits to San Franciscans:
Up to 22,000 small businesses could receive tax credits to provide coverage to their employees
8,100 seniors would avoid the donut hole, forcing them to pay their full drug costs, in Medicare Part D
440 families could escape bankruptcy each year due to unaffordable health care costs
Health care providers would receive payment for $209 million in uncompensated care each year
Tens of thousands of uninsured individuals would gain access to high-quality, affordable health insurance.
This legislation is critical for San Franciscans and all Americans. If we do not act, the cost will be higher, the waste will be greater, their health will be worse, and we will have accomplished nothing.

Please feel free to forward this information to your family and friends. To learn more about these efforts, to express your views, or to sign up for email updates, please visit my Web site.

Barack Obama Prepares For UFO Arrival

An All News Web source reveals starling information about previous extraterrestrial visitors and their planned return.

Sydney, Australia – All News Web recently received a series of brief emails from some-one who claimed to have worked in the Pentagon within the DARPA agency on a project that involved collaborating closely with both NASA’s Ames Research Center and SETI.
The person who has identified herself as ‘Tina’ has provided this news source with a number of scanned documents that back the veracity of her claims to some extent (these documents confirm a professional relationship to the Department of Defense, they do not relate to any information regarding the aliens.)
The correspondent claims to have SAP clearance and has had some access to ‘Black Project’ information. She claims that a multitude of departments house small nucleuses of employees working on the same or related projects and information is very compartmentalized, provided on a ‘need to know’ basis at her level of clearance.
‘Tina’ has a university degree in marketing and came to work on the project which she declines to name via an initial position in the Pentagons public relations operations. Her position involved relaying and rewriting electronic messages for distribution to certain world organizations regarding imminent open contact with an alien race. We are unsure as to why she has contacted All News Web.
According to Tina the last and only physical meeting between aliens and the Government and indeed the only actual official Government recorded UFO landing and alien visitation in the last century up until now occurred in the early 1950’s and was a meeting between three alien explorers and President Truman.
The meeting involved some form of limited telepathic communication and involved the Aliens expressing relief that WW2 had come to an end.
The aliens promised to return one day.
The Aliens were about three foot and of somewhat classic ‘Grey’ appearance. Photographs were taken and these, which have been seen by a handful of media figures (Stanley Kubrick, Steven Spielberg), have become a basis for the traditional image of ‘Grey’ aliens.
The Aliens are believed to come from a planet about thirty light years away and it is unknown if they possess faster than light transport.
Tina did not receive any information on Roswell or any reverse engineering projects involving ET technology. She does not discount other informal alien or UFO incidents.
The aliens seek to establish ties with Earthlings. They are able to monitor the goings on here remotely and it appears they are at least a thousand years ahead of humans technologically
According to Tina SETI is receiving and concealing regular explicit signals (and has been doing so for at least seven years) from this race that state that they are returning to earth in around four years (2013) and have spacecraft essentially mid-journey.
The extra-terrestrials will land openly and in a way that will conclusively prove their presence and are doing so unilaterally. They have given the US government until then to prepare humanity for this event.
According to ‘Tina’s’ emails some powerful security figures would like to thwart this open contact but are powerless to do so.
Many figures associated with NASA and even the Pentagon are positive about the event and a conspiracy to hide the truth form the world’s population is not unanimous.
What all parties agree on is that the best course of action is to leave any announcement of the event to the absolute latest possible time so as not to frighten people or harm the economy.
Major churches have been briefed on the matter and are being given time to shift their positions so as to accommodate this new reality.
The US Govt has been ‘requested’ to mend and clean up rivalries and conflicts in preparation and this extra-ordinary event and this is the primary reason for Barack Obama’s peace gesture to Iran and indeed his very presidency. Barack Obama is in almost daily contact with SETI and is communicating with the aliens directly.
The aliens indirectly contributed to the development of internet search engines and they are in limited contact with Google through SETI.
They are able to access the internet currently and their involvement in search engine research is for the purpose of allowing them to understand as much about earth as possible prior to their next arrival.
It is believed that search engine algorithms are somewhat based on the form of telepathic communication they use.
We at All News Web do not know what to make of these emails but feel obliged to publish their content. Do they represent the truth or will they end up on the slush pile of UFO theories along with so many others? Only time will tell. If any readers have any knowledge corroborating these claims please contact us.

11 WAYS TO LIVE TO 100

Our modern day version of the search for a fountain of youth takes place in Big Pharma’s research and development labs, as they vie to make the pill or potion that will stave off the ravages of age.
Is there a better, more natural way? I’ve been seeing lots of great research focusing on secrets to longer life. Here are some of the best that I’ve found. These very simple and low-tech steps can make enormous impact on your health and longevity.

    1. Run for Your Life

People who run in midlife and beyond live longer, report researchers in the August 11, 2008, issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine. The authors concluded that vigorous exercise such as running at middle and older ages was associated with reduced disability in later life and a higher survival rate. Older runners (50 years and over) remained more fit than older people who did not run, and were about twice as likely to be alive after 20 years.
Especially as we grow older, exercise is essential to keeping the body strong and supple, boosting blood supply to the brain, maintaining bone density and controlling stress and anxiety. Of course, any physical activity is better than none — and the more, the better. Try to fit in at least 30 minutes of moderate to vigorous exercise — brisk walking, bicycling, swimming, dancing — most days of the week.

    2. Daily Brain Training

It’s not just physical exercise that pays dividends over time — successful aging requires a commitment to brain fitness as well. To stay sharp and stave off cognitive decline, challenge your mind as well as your muscles, urges Robert N. Butler, MD, president and CEO of the International Longevity Center and author of The Longevity Revolution.
The Benefits and Challenges of Living a Long Life. His suggestions for good brain workouts include learning a new language or playing a musical instrument. Other ideas include doing daily puzzles, such as crossword or Sudoku, and joining discussion groups on books, current events, religion or other topics you find stimulating. Also useful — a growing number of electronic programs, ranging from a Nintendo game system called Brain Age (brainage.com) to a computer program by Posit Science called Brain Fitness Program Classic (positscience.com).

    3. Food for Thought

Specific substances shown to help fight aging include resveratrol (in grapes, grape juice and red wine) and other similar polyphenols (in blueberries, raspberries and cranberries).
These help discourage inflammation, which is believed to lie at the root of cognitive decline, cardiovascular disease, rheumatoid arthritis, cancer and more.
Other youth-enhancing foods and beverages include walnuts, strawberries, pomegranate juice, green tea, sweet potatoes and spinach. These will fortify wellness and longevity.

    4. Flaxseed, Fish and Other Sources of Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Omega-3 fatty acids support heart, brain, joint and skin health and more. One of them — docosahexaenoic acid or DHA — may help prevent cognitive decline, and in animal studies shows promise in limiting development of the amyloid plaques in the brain that are associated with Alzheimer’s disease.
Good food sources of omega-3 fatty acids are fish (salmon, tuna, herring, etc.), flaxseeds and walnuts. Supplements are another way to go — best bet is either Nordic Naturals or the fish oil line from Pharmax.

    5. Turn to Turmeric

Like omega-3 fatty acids, turmeric confers cognitive benefits — its main biologically active phytochemical component is antioxidant-rich curcumin, which has been shown to reduce inflammation and oxidative damage and improve learning and memory. Interestingly, Alzheimer’s disease is rarer in India, where curry is frequently consumed, than in other cultures.

    6. Cut Calories

Research indicates staying slim may add years of healthy living to your life. Excess weight has been shown time and time again to lead to all sorts of life-threatening diseases. In contrast, calorie restriction has been known to slow aging in animals, and a new study in the June 2008 issue of Rejuvenation Research suggests that it may have the same impact on humans.
According to researchers at Washington University, reducing your intake by just 300 to 500 calories a day (skip the extra slice of pepperoni pizza for lunch or forego the chocolate cake for dessert) may slow the aging process by lowering levels of the thyroid hormone triiodothyronine.
Learn more about this approach at the Web site of the Calorie Restriction Society (calorierestriction.org).

    7. Let the Sunshine Vitamin In

Vitamin D plays an ever more important role in our health as we age — yet an increasing number of Americans are deficient in it, says Daily Health News contributing medical editor Andrew L. Rubman, ND.
It’s a phenomenon he blames on the sun avoidance urged by dermatologists and sunscreen marketers, which has the unintended result of blocking our ability to synthesize vitamin D from the sun. Lack of the sunshine vitamin may not only harm the bones, it may influence your risk of heart disease and certain cancers.
One study in the June 9, 2008, issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine linked low levels of vitamin D to increased heart attack risk, and another in the June 23 edition found that a vitamin D deficiency more than doubled the risk of death from any cause. For protection against vitamin D deficiency, Dr. Rubman suggests 15 minutes of sunshine daily (hold the sunscreen). Dietary sources of vitamin D include salmon, tuna, eggs and enriched dairy products.
If your doctor orders a vitamin D test and your levels are still low, he/she may also prescribe up to 2,000 IU/ daily.

    8. Attack Anxiety

Anxiety is the enemy of longevity. In one study, conducted in part at Purdue University, and which included more than 1,600 men aged 43 to 91, researchers used personality tests to identify “neurotic” individuals — those who worried too much and reacted to stress negatively.
After 12 years, only half the men who measured “high” or “increasing” (meaning their anxiety levels were going up, not down, as they aged) on the neuroticism scale were still alive, as compared with about 80% of the others. These results were published in the May 2008 edition of Psychological Science.

    9. Work for Living

Purpose and passion are essential. Older people need to define goals, keep busy and continue to give themselves a good reason to get out of bed each morning, Dr. Butler emphasizes.
In his view, people who like their work would most likely enjoy happier and healthier lives if they postponed retirement, or perhaps just cut back to part-time.
Alternatively, there are ways to keep your hand in, even after retirement. For example, retired journalists can teach classes at city colleges and bankers may volunteer to help people with their finances at public libraries.

    10. Friends for Life

Socializing, including staying in touch with your friends and family, as well as being part of some kind of community, grows more important as you age. In fact, social isolation in seniors is a risk factor for stress, health problems and even early death.
The stress hormone cortisol contributes to damage of the hippocampus (the part of the brain essential to the formation of memories, and the region most impacted by cognitive decline).

    11. Take Time to Play

While work is important, so is play. There’s truth in that old saying: It’s important to stop and smell the roses.
Throughout life, make time to take vacations, enjoy lazy weekends, laugh with friends, play with grandchildren and continue to build the memories that go into making a long life a good one.
