Palin and Her Supporters Speak vs The Facts.

Posted by michellemoquin on September 4th, 2008

Well I am sure that many of you watched Sarah Palin speak last night at the GOP. How could you not watch her? So many know so little about her, it was the highlight of the evening. However, as much as I thought she looked pretty comfortable up there, there is a side to her that is scary to me.

There is something about the way that she was digging at Obama….the looks that came across her face, the way she scrunched up her nose in disapproval…you would not want to be around this woman if she didn’t get her way – you know like a spoilt child who throws a temper tantrum. Something very unsophisticated about that woman. Not sure that I trust her. Just my sense of her. And the Amercan people aren’t the only one questioning Palin.  Once again, people talking not knowing the recorder is still on! Did ya here Peggy Noonan and Mike Murphy dissing her caught on tape? Ya gotta listen to it if you haven’t.

But on to today’s rap…

I did a little digging myself this morning and discovered that as confident as she sounded, and let me just add a bit bold, she, as well as her Republican supporters, were stretching the truth a bit. Here’s what I found thanks to the Huff:

PALIN: “I have protected the taxpayers by vetoing wasteful spending … and championed reform to end the abuses of earmark spending by Congress. I told the Congress ‘thanks but no thanks’ for that Bridge to Nowhere.”

THE FACTS: As mayor of Wasilla, Palin hired a lobbyist and traveled to Washington annually to support earmarks for the town totaling $27 million. In her two years as governor, Alaska has requested nearly $750 million in special federal spending, by far the largest per-capita request in the nation. While Palin notes she rejected plans to build a $398 million bridge from Ketchikan to an island with 50 residents and an airport, that opposition came only after the plan was ridiculed nationally as a “bridge to nowhere.”

PALIN: “There is much to like and admire about our opponent. But listening to him speak, it’s easy to forget that this is a man who has authored two memoirs but not a single major law or reform _ not even in the state senate.”

THE FACTS: Compared to McCain and his two decades in the Senate, Obama does have a more meager record. But he has worked with Republicans to pass legislation that expanded efforts to intercept illegal shipments of weapons of mass destruction and to help destroy conventional weapons stockpiles. The legislation became law last year. To demean that accomplishment would be to also demean the work of Republican Sen. Richard Lugar of Indiana, a respected foreign policy voice in the Senate. In Illinois, he was the leader on two big, contentious measures in Illinois: studying racial profiling by police and requiring recordings of interrogations in potential death penalty cases. He also successfully co-sponsored major ethics reform legislation.

PALIN: “The Democratic nominee for president supports plans to raise income taxes, raise payroll taxes, raise investment income taxes, raise the death tax, raise business taxes, and increase the tax burden on the American people by hundreds of billions of dollars.”

THE FACTS: The Tax Policy Center, a think tank run jointly by the Brookings Institution and the Urban Institute, concluded that Obama’s plan would increase after-tax income for middle-income taxpayers by about 5 percent by 2012, or nearly $2,200 annually. McCain’s plan, which cuts taxes across all income levels, would raise after tax-income for middle-income taxpayers by 3 percent, the center concluded.

Obama would provide $80 billion in tax breaks, mainly for poor workers and the elderly, including tripling the Earned Income Tax Credit for minimum-wage workers and higher credits for larger families.

He also would raise income taxes, capital gains and dividend taxes on the wealthiest. He would raise payroll taxes on taxpayers with incomes above $250,000, and he would raise corporate taxes. Small businesses that make more than $250,000 a year would see taxes rise.

MCCAIN: “She’s been governor of our largest state, in charge of 20 percent of America’s energy supply … She’s responsible for 20 percent of the nation’s energy supply. I’m entertained by the comparison and I hope we can keep making that comparison that running a political campaign is somehow comparable to being the executive of the largest state in America,” he said in an interview with ABC News’ Charles Gibson.

THE FACTS: McCain’s phrasing exaggerates both claims. Palin is governor of a state that ranks second nationally in crude oil production, but she’s no more “responsible” for that resource than President Bush was when he was governor of Texas, another oil-producing state. In fact, her primary power is the ability to tax oil, which she did in concert with the Alaska Legislature. And where Alaska is the largest state in America, McCain could as easily have called it the 47th largest state _ by population.

MCCAIN: “She’s the commander of the Alaska National Guard. … She has been in charge, and she has had national security as one of her primary responsibilities,” he said on ABC.

THE FACTS: While governors are in charge of their state guard units, that authority ends whenever those units are called to actual military service. When guard units are deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan, for example, they assume those duties under “federal status,” which means they report to the Defense Department, not their governors. Alaska’s national guard units have a total of about 4,200 personnel, among the smallest of state guard organizations.

FORMER ARKANSAS GOV. MIKE HUCKABEE: Palin “got more votes running for mayor of Wasilla, Alaska than Joe Biden got running for president of the United States.”

THE FACTS: A whopper. Palin got 616 votes in the 1996 mayor’s election, and got 909 in her 1999 re-election race, for a total of 1,525. Biden dropped out of the race after the Iowa caucuses, but he still got 76,165 votes in 23 states and the District of Columbia where he was on the ballot during the 2008 presidential primaries.

FORMER MASSACHUSETTS GOV. MITT ROMNEY: “We need change, all right _ change from a liberal Washington to a conservative Washington! We have a prescription for every American who wants change in Washington _ throw out the big-government liberals, and elect John McCain and Sarah Palin.”

THE FACTS: A Back-to-the-Future moment. George W. Bush, a conservative Republican, has been president for nearly eight years. And until last year, Republicans controlled Congress. Only since January 2007 have Democrats have been in charge of the House and Senate.

  1. Health Info Says:

    NURSING SHORTAGE IMPACTS HOSPITAL STAY

Ever ring the call buzzer in the hospital to get a nurse’s attention? And then waited? And then waited some more? The consequences of waiting a while for attention in the hospital can prove serious indeed, even life-threatening.
    SUPPLY DOWN, DEMAND UP
It’s no news that there has been a serious nursing shortage in the US for some time. The dilemma, however, is that as baby boomers reach their 60s and beyond, the demand for nurses grows. Fewer new nurses are entering the profession, and the average age of RNs is climbing. This is not exactly reassuring at a time when more than 100,000 people a year die in hospitals from preventable accidents and complications from medical mistakes, many of which are due to substandard nursing care.
It’s frustrating to consider and it might seem there is little a person can do individually about a national shortage of nursing… except hope for good health. But there are, in fact, measures that patients and family members can take to make sure their loved ones in the hospital get the high-quality nursing care they need. I spoke with Thomas A. Sharon, RN, MPH. Noting that the quality of nursing is just as important to health outcomes as physician care, he had plenty of advice on how to shield yourself and your loved ones during a hospital stay.
    FEWER NURSES = POORER CARE
In a recent survey, one in three people reported experiencing personally or having a family member who had been the victim of a medical error. It’s likely this high figure is related to the nursing shortage, since nurses play a critical role in preventing medical errors. Their role in hospital safety cannot be overestimated, stresses Sharon. Research backs up his observation. Investigators at the University of Pennsylvania found that people who undergo surgical procedures in hospitals with fewer nurses — i.e., high patient-to-nurse ratios — faced a 31% increased risk of dying. For every additional patient in a nurse’s workload, the risk of death in surgical patients jumped by 7%.
Sharon says he’s seen this personally in his 30-year career as a nurse: “When one nurse is assigned to care for 20 patients, some will have to wait and this delay has an impact on health.” He says that in his experience, falls are one of the most common — and most tragic — results of higher-than-optimal patient-to-nurse ratios. Whether bedrails are in place or not, when ill or elderly patients need to use the bathroom or accidentally soil themselves, they’ll do nearly anything to climb out of bed if their call for assistance isn’t responded to within a few minutes. “It’s a tragedy waiting to happen,” he warns.
    WHAT YOU CAN DO
It’s not that nurses don’t want to help, stresses Sharon. Given the current shortage, many nurses are simply overwhelmed by what’s being required of them. He offered this advice on how to work cooperatively with nurses to get the best possible care during a hospital stay:
    • Organize a supportive rotation of family members and friends. This is especially important at night, since a smaller staff is on duty and accidents are more likely to happen. Sharon urges family members to be diplomatic, starting with a visit to the nursing supervisor on duty. Let him/her know who will be staying with the patient and stress that the goal is to help out with simple tasks such as calming your loved one, keeping fresh water available and helping with visits to the bathroom. This removes some of the burden from nurses’ shoulders while also enabling you to keep a close eye on matters.
    • Ask questions. Make sure you understand what’s going on, urges Sharon. He suggests requesting an explanation of the IVs and other confusing — and often frightening — tubes and wires. What’s the purpose of each? What potential problems can you help keep watch for? For example, Sharon notes that when patients are on respirators it is important to be alert to certain warning signs — such as mucous in the tube or a gurgling sound. These are red-alert emergencies that require the nurse to come immediately to clear the patient’s airway.
    • Bring a list of all medications currently taken (both prescription and over-the-counter, as well as any dietary supplements) to the hospital.
    • Be familiar with all pills/medications being given. Errors in medication dispensing are far too common. Ask the doctor what medicine is being prescribed, the dosing for each and its purpose — and then ask the nurse giving the meds what they are and in what doses before taking them. This is to be sure the right doses of the right medicines are being dispensed. If anything is different — the size or shape of the pill, for instance — ask about it, immediately. There may be a simple explanation — say, that an equivalent generic is being substituted for a brand name drug… or it may be that you are preventing a potentially life-threatening error.
    • If there’s a problem, speak up. Don’t hesitate to report any issues of concern, such as unresponsive, distracted or rude nurses, emphasizes Sharon. The proper channels to go through: First, speak with the nursing supervisor… next to the hospital ombudsman… and, finally, if you remain unsatisfied go right to a hospital administrator’s office. There is always an administrator on call and nursing supervisors have access to the pager number for after-hour, weekend and holiday problems. These measures are usually effective, but, if not, every health department in every state has a complaint division, and in the current climate — when news of medical errors regularly blares from the headlines — regulators are acutely sensitive to issues of patient safety. Information is available on-line on your state government Web site or call information for the State Health Department number. They will investigate, says Sharon. Filing a complaint when appropriate is what’s best for you and your loved one and other patients, who will benefit from your actions, too.

My problem is if parents refuse to have the school teach their children about sexually transmitted diseases how do we prevent them from contacting and spreading STDs?

If Palin’s daughter had contacted Hepatitis C, would the outside world be as understanding about Palin’ failure to educate her daughter?

  3. Zen Lill Says:

    Hi Misch,
Thanks for the info, I take it all political speech content with a grain of salt, but she gave good lip service if it’s what you wanted to hear, and that is with no offense intended to Rep’s or small town people who read here, I’ve voted Rep and I grew up fairly small town just bc I live at the beach in LA doesn’t make too ‘cosmopolitan’ to get the rapport building she had going on with the heartland : )

a nod to one of your pasts last week or week before…http://www.lilliandevin.com/ ‘Women of Darfur’ with my intro and ending – your words w/new video in between, again thanks for that : )

    Ciao for now, Zen Lill

  4. Doug Says:

    To Rita…
She might have contacted that disease, as well as Aids or anything else. The small town that Palin hails from is the largest Meth problem in the state. It has escalated from 9 meth labs in 2003 that were closed down to last years number of 42! That is, based on population one meth lab for every 214 people!

Not only was “her child left behind” but left to fend on her own in a very dangerous environment without parental oversight or education on the issue. This directly reflects her character…

But seriously, she really is the best choice for VP for the Repugnicants, because she has executive experience(more than even McCain), and foreign policy experience(lives next door to Russia – she just acquired her first passport in the past two months), and command experience(Alaska National Guard – once the guard is called to active duty the Governor is no longer in charge as they become Federal issue), and she is a reformer(thanks, but no thanks to the bridge to Ketchikan, but I’ll just go ahead and keep the $221 million earmark and use it elsewhere – that comes from the woman who touts that she is against earmarks), and she shook up the “good old boys” (while serving on a 527 group setup by Senator Ted Stevens, the quintessential good old boy), and stood up to big oil companies(while taking campaign contributions from VECO whose CEO pleaded guilty to extortion, bribery, and conspiracy), and she is an evangelical christian(whose daughter didn’t get an abortion after she was knocked up at the age of 16 perhaps while drunk, ps. she’s also a good Mom), and she puts “Country First”(while husband had been a member of a secessionist group of which the founder professed his hatred of America), and she said Obama is an elitist.

Just because Obama was bright enough to get into Columbia and Harvard and then worked with the poor on the south side of Chicago before becoming a state senator. Now, to be fair, John McCain III isn’t, though he got into the Naval Academy because his Dad and Granddad were Admirals, where he graduated at the bottom of his class and then left his first wife after a disfiguring accident for a young heiress. Now he is worth $100 million and only considers those with annual incomes of $5 Million + “rich”. And Cindy McCain’s outfit at her convention appearance cost $300,000 mostly due to the $280K worth of diamonds. But Obama is the elitist according to Palin.(he likes arugala,…gasp)

  5. Madaline Says:

    Michelle & Zen Lill

You have both asked about Anonz. I have some good news and some bad. First let me get out what got him into the trouble in the first place.

Anonz was going to blow the lid on the invasion of Georgia by Russia. He sent to Putin information that he had that the bush administration had manipulated Russia into invading Georgia.

Bush and McCain got McCain’s campaign adviser who is a paid consultant for Georgia to assure them that if they launched an attack on their city that wanted to secede from Georgia the US would protect them if Russia entered the fray.

Bush and McCain new that once Russia entered the Georgia to protect that city they would have an international event to catapult McCain and his media given international experience edge over Obama into the spotlight.

So they prepared McCain and his aid so that McCain could appear very Presidential. Georgia’s leader was so angry that he fired off a strident letter to the UN complaining about the position the US put Georgia in.

Putin was livid when he got the information. He immediately gave the information to China and several other asian countries. He said that the Europe encouraged him to step down as the defacto leader of Russia to keep the peace. This while allowing the President of the US to risk the lives of tens of thousands of people to ensure that his party win the office of President.

Anonz also gave Putin a letter and other talking points that lays out a bush plan to break the agreement the US made with North Korea to provoke them into restarting their nuclear threat.

Japan and South Korea received the information and fired off very angry letters to bush. Bush responded by putting our a hit order on Anonz. Anonz refuses to come in out of the cold. He feels that the people who are taking risks to give him this information should be supported and encouraged to continue to blow the whistle on the “White House thugs.”

The bush crew is in fear of going to jail if a democrat wins the election. They fear an investigation will reveal wholesale thefts of the national treasury. The political manipulation of the Justice Department and the stacking of the Federal Courts with crooked judges will be discovered by the appointment of an Independent Prosecutor. Bush can not afford to allow the democrats to win. This is a fight to they must win. Manipulation of the electoral process is the fail safe if nothing else wins.

Anonz is in the process of attaining information on the companies that sell and maintain the programs that do the counting of the votes. Their is on paper trail so if they say that the vote count was one way, presently their is no way to check its accuracy.

    Madaline

  6. Anonz Says:

    Madaline

I may have to ask you for assistance. The Bush administration is trying to provoke the Russians by sending a battle ship to the Georgian port. I have sent an envoy to assure the Russians that this is just a provocation to get the possibility of a war, any war will do, poise in front of the electorate.

Putin may need assurance that you will intercede on his country’s behalf if it comes to that. I can not bring myself to side with anyone against my country, so I am only asking you to show them some of that power you used to rescue me.

Presently, Putin doesn’t feel that he can take on the American war machine. But he is soliciting the help of the Chinese and other Asian nations. If his generals feel that the US is too weak militarily to contest Russia’s muscle flexing, then, they will punish Georgia.

    Anonz

  7. Mark Says:

    Michelle

I want my wife back. I didn’t believe her when she said that she would be leaving and that I would be left with a cyper something. Well I now believe it. My wife never made love this good. Not ever! Neither could my wife smack me hard enough to break my jaw in a argument.

I know that she didn’t mean to hurt me, but this bitch is scary. Good pussy, be damned, I need the little woman back. Besides, how many times a day can a man fuck a horny bitch.

If this is too raw, then censor it. But if you are the big honcho, then get my wife back. I don’t mean to rile you, and I am certainly not threatening you. I wouldn’t dream of it. I just would like to persuade you to see my side.

    Mark

  8. Choe Says:

I love American politics. Where is Hilary? We can’t wait to hear her weight in. Palin seems to have captured the hearts and minds of the women of America. She is an unknown here.
