John Deere Jams
Posted by Michelle Moquin on November 14th, 2009
For all of you music lovers out there, and who doesn’t love a good jam (?!), this is truly amazing!!!
It’s fun to watch the flying balls strike their destination, creating this musical delight. But don’t stop there – Watch how all of the balls wind up in catcher cones.
This incredible machine was built as a collaborative effort between the Robert M. Trammell Music Conservatory and the Sharon Wick School of Engineering at the University of Iowa. (A poke at you Doug)
Amazingly, 97% of the machine’s components came from John Deere Industries and Irrigation Equipment of Bancroft , Iowa …..yes, farm equipment. And you thought farm equipment only had one purpose!
It took the team a combined 13,029 hours of set-up, alignment, calibration and tuning before filming this video. How exciting to see the results – obviously, it was well worth the effort. It is now on display in the Mathew Gerhard Alumni Hall at the University and is already slated to be donated to the Smithsonian.
Readers: Pretty fabulous huh? Rumor is, it is totally digital? Believe it? Who knows – you tell me. I still think it is cool.

Alexander: I am thrilled that you have found a woman who so inspires you in every way. You are both blessed and lucky that you can be together.
I’m out of here. See ya tomorrow.
Gratefully your blog host,

I’ve seen this before and always enjoy it. I do love the rumor that is from and in Iowa. With some of the parts it could seem to be a true story.
It is computer animated from a company Animusic entitled “Pipe Dream”.

E. coli in supply prompts boil-water notice
<< BACK
Friday, November 13, 2009
HAGATNA, GUAM — Guam Waterworks Authority on November 13 issued a boil-water notice for all Agana Heights residents after fecal coliform bacteria were found in supply samples taken on November 12, Pacific News Center reported November 13.
Waterworks officials said the problem occurred at Well A-31 due to a cracked vacuum hose connected to the chlorination system.
Although the problem was fixed immediately, samples that were taken in the distribution system at the time of the problem showed the presence of E. coli.
GWA is performing repeat sampling.

Mr Alexander H., I did not realize that you were a man with such a huge libido. I am envious of your relationship — not jealous. You seem to be very content having the company of Bita. If it makes you happy, then more power to you. I am glad you enjoyed the phrase “puss whipped.”
I AM honored to speak to a man of your historical reputation — A Father of my Country. I am also honored to have the ear of Adam, who I felt compassion for even though it was not necessary.
I should have realized that Adam had known all about you before he chose you as a time traveling companion.
I wish the three of you all the best on your adventures — Of that I am a bit envious.
Since you choose to write about your carnal life on Michelle’s blog, I felt I could attempt to find out more about you and I did. I thank you for your open honesty.

APPLES FIGHT BREAST CANCER
An apple a day may not only keep the doctor away — new research shows that it may specifically be helpful in protecting against breast cancer.
At Cornell University’s department of food science and Institute for Comparative and Environmental Toxicology, researchers randomly divided rats treated with a known mammary carcinogen into different groups, feeding them either low, middle or high doses of Red Delicious apple extracts (the equivalent of one, three and six apples a day in humans, respectively) or a control extract.
Rats fed the strongest apple extract experienced the lowest cancer rate (40% developed cancer)… followed by the group fed middle-strength extract (43%)… and the lowest strength extract (59%). In comparison, 71% of those fed the apple-free control extract developed mammary cancer over the 24-week study period. The study appeared in the December 10, 2008, online edition of Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.
WHAT’S THE SECRET?
According to researcher Rui Hai Liu, MD, PhD, associate professor of food science at Cornell University, the study demonstrated not only that apple extracts effectively inhibited the growth of mammary tumors in the rats but that the more administered, the greater the anticancer effect. “Not only did animals treated with apple extract have fewer tumors overall, the tumors were smaller, less likely to be malignant and grew more slowly when compared with tumors in the untreated animals,” he said.
Why are apples so powerful against breast cancer, I wondered? Dr. Liu explained to me that apples are one of the best sources of phenolics and flavonoids, which are phytochemicals (bioactive compounds) that have powerful antioxidant and anti-proliferative (antigrowth) effects in the body. In two previous studies, Dr. Liu and his colleagues discovered that phytochemicals from apples effectively inhibited the growth of human breast cancer cells. In another study, Dr. Liu found that phytochemicals from apple peels inhibited an important inflammation pathway, NFkB, in human breast cancer cells, thereby reducing the proliferation of the cancer.
Dr. Liu told me that although other fruits and vegetables also contain phenolics and flavonoids, apples are one of the best dietary sources of fruit phenolics. In fact, of the top 25 fruits consumed in the US, apples provide 33% of the phenolics that Americans consume annually. “Americans love to eat apples, so it makes sense to encourage them as part of a balanced diet for optimal health,” he said, adding that this doesn’t mean anyone should forsake other fruits and vegetables. “It’s clear that regular consumption of fruits, vegetables and whole grains can help to prevent chronic diseases, such as heart disease and cancer,” Dr. Liu said.
