All About Joe

Posted by Michelle Moquin on December 7th, 2009

A new ad campaign targeting Sen. Joseph Lieberman (I-Conn.) for opposing a public health insurance plan gets personal. Its main message: “It’s not about you. It’s all about Joe.”

It even has a new website: AllAboutJoe.org.

The ad is narrated by John Mertens, a Trinity College professor, longshot candidate for senate, and chair of the now-facetiously named Connecticut for Lieberman Party. (Motto: “Not the other way around.”)

The spot was put together by the liberal action group, Progressive Change Campaign Committee. Like earlier PCCC ads targeting wavering Democrats, this one plays off the support a government-run insurance plan has within that senator’s home state. But this one is unusually personal, accusing Lieberman of operating out of self-interest in saying he’d filibuster a public plan.

“Joe never forgets who he ran to represent: himself,” says Merten. “So Joe has a message for Democrats and all the voters who want him to support the public option. It’s not about you. It’s all about Joe.”

The Connecticut for Lieberman Party has moved far away from the point of its conception in 2006, when it was started as a way to enable Lieberman to run for senate even if he lost the Democratic primary election (which he did.) The group has since been taken over by progressives, many of whom have expressed bitterness to the Democrat turned Independent.

No OTW will seriously consider Palin a qualified presidential candidate. Only us brain dead and ego full whites could possibly allow the thought that this air head could be qualified to be president.

I suppose that is the result of having it our way for the last 43 presidential options.

Looks like Guam may be on the road to saving our tuna.
    ______________________________________________________
    By Michael Rudolph
GUAM – One of Japan’s largest seafood companies, Maruha Nichiro Holdings, Inc., is reported to have taken the lead in developing a functional Bluefin Tuna farm that actually protects natural tuna stocks. Unlike most tuna farms that catch wild fish and fatten them on farms, Maruha’s farmed tuna is bred from eggs.

So the question is: Will a whole new segment in the farm-raised fish industry be developed if firms like Maruha are successful?
Guam has a number of private farms that have benefited largely from methods of acquaculture introduced to the island several generations ago. And local pond operators have kept pace with demand through changes in the industry over the years. Given legal access to waters suitable for tuna farming, it’s possible that Guam’s fish farmers could adopt successful tuna-farming practices that are both profitable and sustainable.

This is encouraging news for those concerned about dwindling tuna stocks in the Marianas and for consumers as well. If Maruha is successful in tuna farming, it appears that the demand for tuna could conceivably be sustainably met, with the help of fish farms — as companies like Maruha provide a safe supply of farm raised tuna. Maruha plans to begin selling their farm raised bluefin by 2013.
The tuna stock situation is becoming so dire in parts of the world that Monaco, for example, with the support of the United States, announced that it will push to classify the Atlantic bluefin tuna as an endangered species at the upcoming Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). The next CITES meeting will be in March of 2010 and held in Doha, Qatar.

I agree Susan. I just watched Chris Mathews. He asked the republican pundits if the groups were all white. He was dishonest when he said almost. Chris asked who else was there that was not white. He said I saw one black woman.

Then he went on to say the people were grass roots, conservative, and from both parties. Again he was being dishonest. He could have said the people are white.

I was amazed at the sucking up to her that McCain did because he is running for re election in a white power state.

As you said Susan, politicians are ususally all about themselves and as you said about Joe L. John McCain is all about himself all the time too.

I live in the state that seeks to make being white the only right. But this white girl will be voting on whoever is running against the creep.

Did you read this Michelle. Men are killing women in front of their children.
    ==========
A Bronx mom taking her kids to school Monday morning was killed by a cold-blooded gunman who fired a bullet into the back of her head as her daughters screamed in horror, police and witnesses said.

The victim – identified by police sources as 30-year-old Lakisha Scriven – was shot execution-style as she loaded her girls into her parked SUV.

“I heard crying and screaming,” said neighbor Alicia Parks, 25, who was awoken by the gunshots.
“The only thing I kept hearing was, ‘Mommy!,” said Parks, an administrative assistant. “When I finally woke up I heard, ‘The bad man killed mommy.’”

Scriven died at Jacobi Medical Center an hour and a half after the 7:15 a.m. shooting, police said.
Her girls, aged 5 and 8, were unharmed but traumatized, Parks said.

“[The older girl] kept saying exactly how it happened,” said Parks, who took the girls into her home as police swarmed the blood-stained SUV in Wakefield.

“She does remember her mom falling to the floor,” said Parks. “After today, you know you’re not safe anywhere.”

Investigators did not immediately have a motive for the brazen daylight shooting but a police source said “at this point” the killing looked like a hit.

The children, who were being held at Jacobi for observation, told Parks and police that they did not recognize the gunman.

Police believe the killer walked up to Scriven’s Ford Explorer as the mother piled her girls into the vehicle.

“She was moving her head,” said Irven Parks, Alicia Parks’ father, who ran outside and saw Scriven sprawled at the SUV’s open back door.

“She bled a lot,” said Irven Parks, 52.

Scriven, who police sources said worked for the Administration for Children’s Services, lived in a well-maintained apartment building just steps from where she was killed.

“She’s very, very sweet,” said next door neighbor Sophia Bordeaux, 32, a housekeeper. “She’s such a sweet girl.”

GCC ProStart Students Star on Food Network!

Guam – The Guam Community College George Washington High School ProStart culinary team was featured prominently in Guy Fieri’s Top of the Class program on the Food Network.

The half-hour special is aired on The Food Network, Sunday, December 6, at 7:30 pm Guam time. The program is re-air Monday December 7th at 3:30 P.M.

Top of the Class is a program that highlights the National Restaurant Association’s 2009 National ProStart Invitational culinary competition that took place in April in San Diego. The program is hosted by Guy Fieri (Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, Guy’s Big Bite and Ultimate Recipe Showdown), and follows the culinary competition from orientation to the crowning of the culinary champions. The GW team – Captain Ria Aquinde, and members Rendel Carolino, Christine Cruz, and Brandon Sapp – place 4th out of 38 teams in the competition. Their instructor is Frank Evangelista.

Guy Fieri highlighted the Guam team three different times during the half-hour program, and then again at the end when the team placed 4th in the competition. At one point, Fieri interviewed team member Brandon Sapp about his method of infusing basil into the pasta and making it look almost like artwork, which caught the judges’ attention.

“We could’ve never dreamed of getting this type of coverage on a national program. Frank and I are so proud of these kids. They are stars,” said GCC Tourism & Hospitality & Culinary Arts Dept. Chair Barry Mead, who also serves as the ProStart State Director for Guam.

“This is what we are all about, our students and these opportunities,” Mead said.

The National ProStart program involves 80,000 high school students from 47 states. Guam Community College offers its ProStart program in four of Guam’s five public high schools. (The program cannot currently be implemented at Okkodo High School because of lack of kitchen facilities for the students.)

In February 2010, the four high school teams will compete to see which team heads to the national competition next year.

GCC offers nine programs in Guam’s public high schools, which enables the college to reach over twice as many students as it did nearly 10 years ago when GCC’s high school program was offered only on the Mangilao campus. Back then GCC could serve only about 1000 students. Today’s cross enrollment of high school students in GCC secondary programs stands at 2,214 students.

Currently, Marketing, Lodging Management, Construction and Electronics are offered at all five high schools. ProStart (culinary) and Allied Health are offered at GW, John F. Kennedy, Simon Sanchez, and Southern; Automotive Services are offered at all public high schools except Simon Sanchez, which is currently constructing an auto shop for the students; Auto Body is offered at GW and Southern; and Visual Communications is offered only at GW because the students are able to walk over to the GCC campus for classes in the GCC Technology Center.

  10. Mike Says:

Mike Huckabee is busy lying to anyone who would listen.
    ——————————————–
Help us stop this EVIL law!

    Dear Fellow Conservative,

In July 2007, Barack Obama promised a group of his supporters that, if elected president, he would sign perhaps the most evil piece of legislation in the history of our republic.

It’s called the “Freedom of Choice Act,” or FOCA — but don’t let the Orwellian title fool you. It isn’t about “freedom” or “choice” at all. It’s about forcing each and every American citizen — regardless of his or her view on abortion — to support abortion-on-demand not just as a “fundamental right” but as a taxpayer-funded entitlement.

But the compulsion wouldn’t stop there. Because FOCA would also run roughshod over the conscience rights of doctors, nurses, and hospitals that oppose abortion on religious or moral grounds — forcing them to provide or counsel for abortion or face professional de-certification, loss of funding, lawsuits, and even prosecution.

Not only that, FOCA would immediately strike down any and all state restrictions on abortion — even those with wide popular support, such as prohibitions on partial-birth abortion and parental notification requirements for minors seeking abortions.

Make no mistake: FOCA is the most radical piece of pro-abortion legislation ever proposed, one that would go far beyond Roe v. Wade in making abortion a government-protected and taxpayer-supported “right,” through all nine months of pregnancy.

That’s why I’m asking you today to support HUMAN EVENTS in its efforts to stop this outrageous piece of legislation before it ever reaches President Obama’s desk.

Let me explain why this is possible — and how
HUMAN EVENTS plans to do it…

You see, in his 2007 campaign pledge to Planned Parenthood members, Obama promised that signing FOCA would be “the first thing I’d do as president.” The only reason he hasn’t followed through on that promise is that Democratic-controlled Congress has yet to introduce and pass it.

Why the delay? For one thing, they’ve had bigger fish to fry — such as trillion-dollar “stimulus” packages and a new government-run health care system. They learned from Bill Clinton’s immediate post-election action on gays in the military not to squander a new president’s honeymoon period on divisive social legislation.

But also, by delaying, they can lull their pro-life opponents into thinking that FOCA has been tabled, while quietly building support for it in a stealth propaganda campaign that is already underway using major media outlets — such as the Washington Post, which recently ran a piece in its “On Faith” section called “Why Fear FOCA?”

But with your help, HUMAN EVENTS will defeat the pro-abortionists’ “stealth” media campaign with its own media blitzkrieg designed to counter pro-FOCA lies and propaganda with the facts.

    Here’s how it will work…

The main weapon in HUMAN EVENTS’ media blitzkrieg will be an in-depth Special Report called, “The Facts About FOCA: Truth vs. Propaganda in the Battle Over the Most Radical Pro-Abortion Law in American History.”

Written in consultation with the finest legal minds of our time, “The Facts About FOCA” will reveal how, despite pro-abortionists’ attempts to soft-pedal its potential impact in order to ensure swift passage, the Freedom of Choice Act would:
Establish abortion as a “fundamental right,” elevating it to the same status as the right to vote and the right to free speech — going beyond any Supreme Court decision in enshrining unlimited abortion-on-demand into American law
Eliminate every restriction on abortion nationwide — including 44 states’ laws concerning parental involvement, 40 states’ laws on restricting later-term abortions, 46 states’ conscience protection laws for individual health care providers, 27 states’ conscience protection laws for institutions, 38 states’ bans on partial-birth abortions, 33 states’ laws on requiring counseling before an abortion, and 16 states’ laws concerning ultrasounds before an abortion
Compel taxpayer funding of abortions through state and federal welfare programs, federal employee insurance plans, and in military hospitals.
Force faith-based hospitals and healthcare facilities to perform abortions
Force doctors and nurses to provide counseling and referral for abortions
But creating “The Facts About FOCA” is just the beginning. HUMAN EVENTS will then publicize and distribute it on a massive scale, both in print versions and online, to provoke a massive outpouring of voter outrage that will stop this evil law from being enacted.

Included among the activists, opinion-makers, and other influential citizens to whom HUMAN EVENTS will distribute “The Facts About FOCA” will be:
Pro-life, conservative, and/or Republican activist groups on HUMAN EVENTS’ own extensive nationwide list, with an invitation to help spread the word by ordering and distributing inexpensive bulk reprints of the report
Top editors, reporters, and syndicated columnists on every major metropolitan and regional paper in America, plus many local ones. HUMAN EVENTS will give them blanket advance permission to reproduce the report in whole or in part, without paying royalties
Talk-radio hosts in every radio market in the country, from Rush Limbaugh on down. Again, HUMAN EVENTS will allow them to quote from it as extensively as they wish, at no cost
TV news editors, anchors, and reporters at all the networks and cable news channels, as well as local affiliates
All 435 members of the U.S. House and Senate, with additional copies for their staff members and committee aides
More than 150,000 dedicated HUMAN EVENTS readers
And you, of course, will be first to receive “The Facts About FOCA” — no one will get it before you do!

    Can HUMAN EVENTS do it?
YES – because they’ve done it before

In 2004, HUMAN EVENTS helped an obscure organization with no money known as the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth publicize their claims about John Kerry. They had planned a commercial for a small number of local TV markets. But before it even ran, HUMAN EVENTS posted the ad on its website and leaked it to Matt Drudge — then sent out hundreds of thousands of email messages calling attention to it over several weeks.

Result? Tens of millions of people were able to view an ad that otherwise would have reached a few hundred thousand at best. That, in turn, helped make a #1 New York Times bestseller out of Unfit for Command: Swift Boat Veterans Speak Out Against John Kerry, published by HUMAN EVENTS’ sister company, Regnery — provoking the New York Times itself to concede, “If John Kerry loses the presidential election, Unfit for Command, by John E. O’Neill and Jerome R. Corsi, will go down as a chief reason.” He did, and it was.

I promise you, HUMAN EVENTS can accomplish the same sort of thing with “The Facts About FOCA.”

    But They Need YOUR Help

Creating and distributing “The Facts About FOCA” on a massive, nationwide scale will not come cheap. But it will be worth every penny if it helps defeat this deadly and freedom-destroying legislation.

It wouldn’t be fair to pass on that cost to HUMAN EVENTS readers by hiking subscription rates. And unlike most liberal publications, they receive no support from big corporations or foundations — for whom they’re about as “politically incorrect” as you can get.

Which leaves people like you — dedicated conservatives who share not only HUMAN EVENTS’ pro-life principles, but their commitment to making an impact on the great political struggles of our day.

It’s going to be tough, but I believe we can do it. Your donation will help HUMAN EVENTS “fight the good fight” against FOCA, and support it in its ongoing mission to promote limited government, individual liberty, and traditional values.

And to express their gratitude for your donation of just $75 or more, HUMAN EVENTS will send you a complimentary hardcover copy of The Party of Death: The Democrats, the Media, the Courts, and the Disregard for Human Life, written by National Review senior editor Ramesh Ponnuru.

Of course, any amount you send will be greatly appreciated — and they’ll send you a copy of their special report, “The Facts About FOCA,” to thank you for your contribution big or small.

Donate now so we can bring “The Facts About FOCA” to the American public — and stop the so-called “Freedom of Choice Act” in its tracks.

    Best Regards,

    Mike Huckabee

P.S. Just like HUMAN EVENTS’ “Swift-Boat” exposure helped to sink John Kerry in 2004, “The Facts About FOCA” could prevent this outrageous piece of pro-abortion legislation from ever reaching the desk of President Obama — who has promised to sign it. HUMAN EVENTS needs your help to tell the public the truth and spark a firestorm of voter opposition before it’s too late. Please make as generous a contribution as you can today.

P.P.S. Give $75 or more and HUMAN EVENTS will send you a complimentary hardcover copy of Ramesh Ponnuru’s The Party of Death: The Democrats, the Media, the Courts, and the Disregard for Human Life as a thank-you gift. Ponnuru’s shocking exposé shows just how extreme the Party of Death has become as they seek to destroy every inconvenient life, demand fealty to their radical agenda, and punish anyone who defies them. But he also shows how the tide is turning, how the Party of Death can be defeated, and why its last victim might be the Democratic Party itself.

Big Media’s war on natural health

    Dear Friend,

What is it with the Associated Press and alternative health? They treat stories about natural healing the way schoolyard bullies treat other kids – with contempt and disrespect driven entirely by ignorance.

Just take a look at this editor’s note they’ve been running with their recent stories trashing alternative health:

EDITOR’S NOTE: Ten years and $2.5 billion in research have found no cures from alternative medicine. Yet these mostly unproven treatments are now mainstream and used by more than a third of all Americans. This is one in an occasional Associated Press series on their use and potential risks.

It’s absurd and offensive – not to mention untrue. Here’s a headline from 2004: “Record acupuncture study shows arthritis relief.” It’s attached to an Associated Press story describing how acupuncture beat sham acupuncture and the Arthritis Foundation’s self-help course for both pain relief and improved function in arthritis patients.

I guess someone at the AP hasn’t read the AP.

The idea that alternative health offers unproven treatments and no cures is comical when you think about the ineffectiveness of so many of Big Pharma’s biggest meds – drugs that “manage” conditions without ever curing them.

Funny, though, how I don’t remember the AP ever running these kinds of disclaimers on stories about celebrated meds. Vioxx, anyone?

Study after study has shown that antidepressants are routinely beaten – trounced – by everything from talk therapy to exercise… but again, no disclaimers to that effect when the AP runs a story on depression meds.

Natural treatments work and the answers are out there for anyone who wants to look. We’d have more and better results on alternative health if we had more studies – but we don’t, and that’s because Big Pharma has a hand in most of our medical research, including (especially) government- funded studies.

But forget that for a moment, because the facts speak for themselves. I tell you all the time about proven, natural nutrients that can help fight or treat many conditions better than prescription meds… but maybe that’s not alternative enough for the Associated Press.

    Fine.

Let’s look at something that many people, even me, would consider really out there… like reiki and therapeutic touch.

These “biofield therapies” are based on New Age beliefs that you can manipulate the energy around you to overcome illness and pain.

It’s pretty far-out stuff, and I’m skeptical myself… but unlike our friends at the AP, I also keep an open mind. So a study in the International Journal of Behavioral Medicine really caught my attention when it found that there may be something to these therapies after all.

Researchers analyzed 66 clinical studies on biofield therapies. And they found strong evidence that the techniques can reduce pain in people who live independently, and moderate evidence that these therapies can decrease pain in hospital patients and cancer patients.

They also found moderate evidence that biofield therapies can help ease agitation in dementia patients and reduce anxiety in hospitalized patients.

Clearly, we need a lot more research on this before we declare “healing touch” to be the next front in natural treatments. The placebo effect can be strong, especially when it comes to pain relief (and that goes for studies on Big Pharma’s painkillers, too).

But to dismiss any treatment out of hand when it offers the possibility of a safe, inexpensive and effective option would be as foolish as swallowing any pill Big Pharma gives you with asking questions first.

Just remember: There’s nothing wrong with healthy skepticism. But ignorance is another story altogether – one the AP is happy to give you.

On a mission for your health,

    Horace,
Hmm, contrary to ‘what others missing what’s in a man’s words’ um, (I’m assuming I’m the ‘other’ since the original Anonz apple/tree/garden lease comment was directed at me) I understood Anonz quite well, first problem is that I don’t write poetry and the second is I think he’s well aware that if he’d like a response anything close to Ricky’s from moi, that he’ll have to have it delivered in person, he and I, eye to eye, I just don’t roll any other way. Blog chemistry is fantastic but real live chemistry is where its at for me. That being said, Ricky has that beautiful poetic style and can reflect her own feelings of heat, lust and now love to Anonz if she’d like to, her comment was not directed at me so I don’t have anything to say about it.
Good luck in starting up a romance on line with her!
    Luv, Zen Lill

Howie and Al, if you’re out there, hello and I hope you’re both OK?

    Women of MM Blog,
Keep your holiday guests healthy also…I served all the usual goodies at a party last night and this one emerged as the winner AND I had to make 3 rounds of it. I call it Christmas salad bc it’s all red and green : ) and I just love this time of year, everyone seems happier even if they do cut you off to steal your parking space hee hee…

Tear up 3 cups of baby spinach, cut 1 red pepper into small pieces and toss in, cut up a dozen strawberries and toss them in and cut cherry pr grape tomatoes in half and toss them in, toss in olive oil and Bragg’s amino acids (you can use low sodium soy sauce if you cannot find the Bragg’s) it is heavenly, try it!

Be back with some new exercises asap!

    G’night, Zen Lill

PS Anonz, if you’re reading and dig imagery and poetry that rivals your own style, check out Ricky’s poem, I think it was Saturday, very cool and very hot (except the waiting…waiting…waiting part, therein lies the rub)

    Zen Lill

I meant no disrespect to you when I was complimenting on Ricky’s response to Anonz’s poetic muse.

I did not read your reply because it was not meant for the general public as it was to Anonz. I admire the way you two conduct yourselves on the blog.

I also enjoy the dialogue. It is very romantic and a touch erotic surrounded in the mystery of what is really happening between you two.

As the tabloids would say “curious minds want to know.”

I directed my comments towards Ricky because she has not been chosen by Anonz and I like her style.

I am a prose man who loves the poetic delivery.

BARBARA BOXER NEEDS YOUR SUPPORT THIS COMING ELECTION. I have been a backer of hers since she entered the political arena. She has done great work for CA and my district. But, she is going to need help. Carla Fiorina, the lame, crusty, old white man, in women’s clothes is going after Barbara Boxers seat in the Senate.

Here is some of Barbara’s recent work:

Monday, during the opening rounds of debate on Sen. Ben Nelson’s (D-Neb.) proposed amendment to prohibit any federal funding of abortion, Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) hit “the men who have brought us this” where it hurts.

Boxer likened a measure in the Nelson Amendment that would force women to purchase special abortion riders to a theoretical yet unimaginable measure — requiring men to purchase a special rider for a Viagra prescription.

BOXER: The men who have brought us this don’t single out a procedure that’s used by a man, or a drug that is used by a man, that involves his reproductive health care and say they have to get a special rider. There’s nothing in this amendment that says if a man some days wants to buy Viagra, for example, that his pharmaceutical coverage cannot cover it, that he has to buy a rider. I wouldn’t support that. And they shouldn’t support going after a woman using her own private funds for her reproductive health care. Is it fair to say to a man you’re going to have to buy a rider to buy Viagra and this will be public information that could be accessed? No, I don’t support that. I support a man’s privacy, just as I support a woman’s privacy.

Horace, I didn’t think you meant disrespect to me, just like to clarify things that seem to have a ZL attachment, I can appreciate good poetic prose myself and so I do hope Ricky responds to you, thank you for all the nice things you said about Anonz and I and the way we conduct ourselves here…

Mischa, finally got around to watching the videos from Fri, very disturbing indeed, I hope this city councilman gets his wish and spreads the video coverage around. The ‘south park’ voicepver in the background talking to the ‘grand master’ was a bit odd but the points were not missed. Hopefully I can get to watch the Joe video today : ) busy with end of season sample sale, want my full two weeks off and I want to SKI, I am totally Jonesing for a ski right now…a little R&R would be great.

Catch you all later, Zen Lill
