I just got through watching Colbert live in Congress. Did you see? I tried to get it up and post Colbert’s Live testimony, but I was too entrenched in watching it to get it together.

Comedy Central host Stephen Colbert is testifying before Congress today about immigration during a hearing called “Protecting America’s Harvest.”

Colbert is appearing with United Farm Workers (UFW) President Arturo S. Rodriguez before the House Judiciary Committee’s Subcommittee on Immigration, Citizenship, Refugees, Border Security, and International Law. In August, the comedian spent a day working at a corn and vegetable farm in New York state after Rodriguez appeared on his show to discuss UFW’s “Take Our Jobs” campaign.

The effort was intended to debunk the theory that undocumented immigrants are taking jobs away from American citizens and highlight the fact the nation’s food supply is dependent on these farm workers.

Colbert’s testimony has already happened, as I mentioned above, but you can still watch the live hearing:

OMG, that was great, I can’t stop laughing, Steve Colbert is hysterical, love the part with his head in the basket, something about it reminded me of when you tried on my platinum wig by turning your head upside down to get in it : ) too funny…

America is weird, obesity is on the rise and yet 1 in 8 people go hungry. I’m all for sending aid to other countries when they have natural disasters, etc… (like Pakistan right now, haiti last year and still…and anywhere else) however – why oh why is it that we cannot fix giving out the basics, here and everywhere? Just food and shelter, we don’t have to supply mansions and gourmet fare everyday but there’s no reason why we cannot supply decent food, clean drinking water and somewhere to lay your head to rest, is there? Ieyiyi…

Small Pacific Island Becoming A U.S. Strategic Hub
    Wednesday, September 22, 2010
    By Patrick Goodenough

The future holds big changes for the U.S. Naval Base on Guam, photographed here in August 2010. (U.S. Navy photo by Mass Communication Specialist 2nd Class Peter Lewis)

(CNSNews.com) – The signing of a document on Guam Tuesday marked the beginning of a historic build-up of U.S. military assets on the small Pacific island, part of an alignment of forces designed to better handle future security challenges in a key part of the world.

    The plan calls for the relocation to Guam of 8,600 U.S. Marines and their estimated 9,000 dependents, from Japan’s Okinawa some 1,400 miles to the northwest;

the construction of a deepwater wharf capable of accommodating visiting nuclear-powered aircraft carriers; and the development of a U.S. Army air and missile defense facility, to provide a defensive umbrella for the military assets.

Some Marine training facilities also are expected to be built on Tinian island, 100 miles to the north – part of the Northern Marianas, a U.S. commonwealth.

Guam, which is currently home to U.S. Navy facilities and Andersen Air Force Base, has long been a functional forward-deployed location for the military, and in 2000 became the first installation outside the continental U.S. to store long-range air-launched cruise missiles, easily accessible in the event of a future conflict in the region.

But now it is on track to become a much more important strategic hub and staging point for the U.S. as the closest military presence on U.S. soil to regional hot spots such as North Korea and the Taiwan Strait. Guam is about 3,700 miles closer to the Korean peninsula than is Hawaii.

Being U.S. territory, Guam also meets the “freedom of action” requirement, the absence of which has at times hampered U.S. forces based in America’s main regional military allies, Japan and South Korea.

In another sign of its growing importance, Andersen on Monday became the first permanent U.S. base to deploy an RQ-4 Global Hawk, the advanced unmanned surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft slated in time to replace the venerable U-2 spy plane.

Andersen is scheduled to get three Global Hawks, which are capable of flying at high altitudes for long-distance missions lasting 30 hours or more, tracking moving targets and intercepting ground communications.

Their deployment comes amid ongoing North Korean belligerence, and at a time of when U.S. allies in Asia are increasingly concerned about China’s military modernization and increasing assertiveness in the South China and East China seas.

At Naval Base Guam on Tuesday, a U.S. Navy “record of decision” was signed, marking what the Joint Guam Program Office (JGPO) executive director, retired Marine Maj. Gen. David Bice, called the “transition point” for the major project.

When then Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld visited Guam during a 2003 visit to Northeast Asia to first discuss force repositioning options Gov. Felix Camacho and Guam’s congressional delegate, Madeleine Bordallo, urged him to consider deploying more U.S. personnel there.

They also wanted the Pentagon to choose Guam over Hawaii as the homeport for the first nuclear-powered carrier to be permanently stationed outside the continental U.S.

Although they did not get their wish on the carrier homeport – Yokosuka Naval Base in Japan was chosen instead to house the USS George Washington – Guam will see a significant influx of military personnel and dependents in the coming years.

The report signed Tuesday estimates that the population increase on Guam will total around 34,000, although it will reach double that for a limited period while construction work is underway.

The influx will have a big impact on the island, which is about three times the size of Washington, D.C., and has a population of around 178,000 people, about 40 percent of them indigenous Chamorros.

A military-civilian coordination body will be set up to deal with challenges arising from the changes, but Bice told a meeting on the island last week that the build-up would bring “unprecedented opportunities for the community.”

“Giving back is part of the way of life for Marines,” a JCPO statement said Tuesday. “From visits to convalescent centers, senior centers, hospitals, and veteran’s organizations; to tutoring and mentoring school-aged youth, Marines understand and appreciate their duty to give back their time and talent to the communities that support them.”

The Guam Chamber of Commerce says the build-up will bring revenues, tourism, infrastructure, jobs, improved health and educational facilities and opportunities for entrepreneurship.

Two sensitive aspects of the plans relate to the location of a live-fire training range near an ancient Chamorro village, raising heritage preservation concerns; and the impact of the carrier berth on coral reefs.

The document signed Tuesday deferred final decisions on those two issues, allowing more time for consultation and marine surveys of possible alternative berth sites.

The U.S. Marines’ move to Guam by 2014 is part of a broader bilateral agreement with Japan, aimed at reducing the U.S. military footprint on Okinawa while retaining U.S. commitments to provide for the defense and security of Japan. As such, Japan agreed in 2006 to carry just under 60 percent of the costs of the relocation.

  4. Evelyn Says:

H introduced me to weights. I can not tell you what a change it has made in my life in a few words. So I found this.
    ==========================

    Simple solutions for pain relief

On Sunday, I let you in on a fun little secret: A little bit of alcohol can go a long way when it comes to relieving arthritis pain—and possibly even preventing the disease in the first place.

But that’s not the only way to reduce your pain if you’re suffering from this disease.

According to a recent study published in Arthritis Care and Research, lifting weights can help reduce pain and improve function among RA patients.

Researchers divided 28 patients into two groups: One engaged in a high-intensity weight-training regimen for 24 weeks, while the other did less strenuous home-based exercises.

Those who did the weightlifting appeared better able to re- grow muscle, bone and cartilage. They also had a 120 percent increase in strength and 20-30 percent improvements in physical function.

The researchers say weight training can be used alongside drugs to “maximize” benefits… and there they go again.

Why do supposed experts always assume that drugs have to be part of the picture?

The simple fact is, you don’t need meds or even a weightlifting regimen to beat arthritis, because there are dozens of safe and effective alternatives–from the anti- inflammatory powers of fish oil to the pain relief of comfrey root-based lotions.

Some people even find that their condition is being caused or worsened by food allergies–and that by simply avoiding certain foods, like nightshade vegetables, they can get the relief they’re looking for.

And still others find the symptoms practically vanish when they give up smoking.

So if you’re tired of drugs and their side effects–if you’re tired of not getting any better–do yourself a favor and visit a doctor who specializes in natural treatments and come up with a new approach instead.
    ====================
Every woman should try weights at least once to see if she can benefit from this form of exercise.

    Evelyn

  5. Mike Says:

First the Right scares the flock with the idea that Obama has destroyed capitalism. Then they show them how to PROFIT from Obama’s destruction of capitalism. Wonderful scam if you got the suckers. And they do.
    ===============================

My #1 Way to Profit as Obama
    Destroys Capitalism

    Dear Fellow Conservative,

“Somehow we just missed that home prices don’t go up forever.”

No, that’s not your idiot brother-in-law explaining how his four home equity loans eventually landed him penniless on a futon in your rec room. It’s the billionaire CEO of JP Morgan, Jamie Dimon.

Dimon was explaining to Congress’s Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission how he and his fellow Magic Men crashed the entire U.S. economy and then turned to taxpayers for a bail out.

Really? So Dimon’s defense to Wall Street’s utter recklessness with other people’s money is to claim that Wall Street doesn’t really understand how the market works? Again: Really?

But no one on the Commission challenged Dimon because, while the Commission’s stated purpose is “to examine the causes of the financial crisis,” its actual purpose is to conceal those causes — especially the federal government’s own central role in creating the housing bubble.

Further proof that the Commission isn’t serious: It has not yet recommended that the President resign immediately. (Obama’s next idea for fighting unemployment is to institute a weekly census.)

Instead, we get make-believe “hearings” where executives like Mr. Dimon admit to egregious stupidity. The Magic Men are happy to play along — as long as they get to keep their tax-supported bonuses.

Don’t get me wrong: I’m not suggesting that everyone on Wall Street is as dumb as Jamie claims they are.

What I am suggesting, however, is that whether the “best and brightest” on Wall Street turn out to be stupid or dishonest doesn’t matter to our retirement accounts. Isn’t it time we stopped trusting them with all our money? And if we don’t feel quite competent to manage it on our own (I sure don’t), shouldn’t we find someone whose character, reputation, and financial expertise we can rely on?

I think so. And if you’re with me on that, I’ve got just the man to help you take control of your own investments and put your mind at ease about your financial future.

His name is Dr. Mark Skousen, a free-market economist and editor of the investment newsletter Forecasts & Strategies — and he just might be the smartest financial advisor working today.

How so? For one thing, unlike the Wall Street Wizards who “somehow just missed” the oncoming financial collapse, Dr. Skousen actually predicted it almost two years in advance, in 2006, when he warned his Forecasts & Strategies subscribers that “we clearly are headed for fiscal disaster” (and then showed them how to protect themselves).

But that’s just one among hundreds of uncannily accurate market calls Dr. Skousen has made in the 30 years since he launched Forecasts & Strategies — including:
Last March he called the exact bottom of the market, telling his subscribers that “stocks are a screaming buy.” In the four weeks following, the Dow soared a remarkable 24.5%.

Just weeks before the NASDAQ collapsed in 2000, he warned his subscribers that tech stocks were dangerously overvalued.

He told his subscribers in 1995 that the NASDAQ would double, and then double again — which is exactly what it did.

He called the Gulf War of 1990 “a turning point for U.S. stocks” — and the Dow subsequently began a bull market that didn’t end for nearly ten years.

And he issued a “sell everything” recommendation to his Forecasts & Strategies subscribers just 41 days before the stock market crash of 1987 — then told them to get fully invested again several weeks later, just in time for the recovery.
(It’s not a financial prediction exactly, but Dr. Skousen also correctly forecast that Rima Fakih would become the first Muslim woman to win the Miss U.S.A. contest after she wowed the audience in the burka competition and knocked them out in the talent portion of the competition by not driving.)

Then there’s my favorite Mark Skousen prediction — the one that launched his career back in the early ’80s, when he defied the so-called experts by predicting “Reaganomics will work.” Which, of course, it did — and, come to think of it, will again, when we finally bring it back.

But until that blessed day arrives, take comfort in this: Mark Skousen knows how to make you money even during turbulent economic times.

Bottom line: Trusting Wall Street’s “We didn’t think markets went down” Money Men to manage your money is like trusting Bill Clinton with your daughter. Better to take your financial affairs into your own hands, with the expert guidance of Mark Skousen in Forecasts & Strategies.

The cost? About a tankful of gas for your SUV — or two tankfuls if the Democrats push through “Cap and Trade,” or as it’s formally known, “The Huge New Tax on Everything Under the Sun Act of 2010.”

    Sincerely,

    Ann Coulter

P.S. Mark has just revealed a unique investment opportunity. An investment that measured over a 3-year, 5-year, 10-year, or even 20-year period has never, EVER lost money. In fact, during 2009 alone, it rose more than 50%! Heâ?Ts prepared a short presentation that includes all the details about “The Investment That Never Loses Money” — plus 5 more great investments in his FREE “Crisis-Proof Portfolio” — that shows you how to take advantage of it.

Just click here to get all the details.

P.P.S. You don’t have take my word about Mark Skousen — listen to a few folks who’ve already subscribed to Forecasts & Strategies at my recommendation:

“Thanks very much, Ann! Even though it has been a short time, I have grown my investment by 25% in the past 4 months of following Mr. Skousen’s recommendations.” — Steve L.

“Thank GOD for Ann Coulter’s outspoken patriotism and Dr. Skousen’s financial forecasts.” — Wayne S.

“My portfolio has only increased, no downs since Mark! God bless you, Ann! I knew his had to be a good tip!” — Rhondi E.

“Thank you, best decision I ever made.” — Wallace M.

Those of you on the Island interested in the Similac recall. Here are some places on the island where the tainted product was sold.
    ====================
Recalled formula found at 4 retailers
    PACIFIC DAILY NEWS • NEWS@GUAMPDN.COM • SEPTEMBER 25, 2010

The Department of Public Health and Social Services’ Division of Environmental Health has announced the recalled Similac powder infant formula was found at four retail locations on Guam.

Global health-care company Abbott Laboratories announced on Wednesday it had issued a voluntary recall of a powdered infant formula — available at the following location on Guam, according to Public Health — based on the “remote possibility” that the product may contain small beetles.

    The locations are:

    UR Market in Dededo,

    California Mart in Tamuning,

    7 Day Supermarket in Yona,

and Island Fresh in Chalan Pago.
    The recall affects:

Certain Similac powder product lines offered in plastic containers.

Certain Similac powder product lines offered in 8-ounce, 12.4-ounce and 12.9-ounce cans.
No Abbott liquid infant formulas are affected, according to Similac. That’s why parents can use the liquid formulas as a substitute, according to Micronesian Brokers, the product distributor on Guam.

Though the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said any formula containing the beetles poses no immediate health risk, it added there’s a possibility infants who consume formula containing the beetles or their larvae could experience symptoms of gastrointestinal discomfort and refusal to eat.

If these symptoms persist for more than a few days, parents and caregivers should contact a physician, according to the Similac website.

Products with affected lot numbers should be returned to Abbott at no cost to the consumer, according to Similac.

    Take care
