yeah can you do the poster or not? I just want a photo and the word lost and the telephone number and when and where she was lost and her name. Not like a movie poster or anything stupid. I have to leave early today. If it was your cat I would help you. Thanks.

Dear Shannon,
I don’t have a cat. I once agreed to look after a friend’s cat for a week but after he dropped it off at my apartment and explained the concept of kitty litter, I kept the cat in a closed cardboard box in the shed and forgot about it. If I wanted to feed something and clean faeces, I wouldn’t have put my mother in that home after her stroke. A week later, when my friend came to collect his cat, I pretended that I was not home and mailed the box to him. Apparently I failed to put enough stamps on the package and he had to collect it from the post office and pay eighteen dollars. He still goes on about that sometimes, people need to learn to let go.
I have attached the amended version of your poster as per your detailed instructions.
Regards, David.

I know, but that one is cute. As Missy has quite possibly met any one of several violent ends, it is possible you might get a better cat out of this. If anybody calls and says “I haven’t seen your orange cat but I did find a black and white one with its hind legs run over by a car, do you want it?” you can politely decline and save yourself a costly veterinarian bill.
I knew someone who had a basset hound that had its hind legs removed after an accident and it had to walk around with one of those little buggies with wheels. If it had been my dog I would have asked for all its legs to be removed and replaced with wheels and had a remote control installed. I could charge neighbourhood kids for rides and enter it in races. If I did the same with a horse I could drive it to work. I would call it Steven.
Regards, David.

The Drinking Age On Guam Is Now 21

    Guam – Guam News

Guam – The drinking age on Guam is now 21 years of age. Acting Governor Dr. Mike Cruz signed the bill into law at 12:20 pm this afternoon [Thursday]. The measure took effect immediately upon signing.

    Dim lights Embed
The bill raises the legal drinking age from 18 to 21. It does not prohibit 18, 19 or 20 year olds from entering a bar or restaurant that serves alcohol. Nor does it prohibit 18, 19 or 20 year olds from serving alcohol if they work at such establishments.

In signing the bill, Acting Governor Cruz said “On behalf of Governor Camacho and the people of Guam I now sign the Ramon Oberiano Act into law which is going to be Public Law 30-156.”

The act was named in honor of Ramon Oberiano who was the victim of a drunk driver. He was killed on December 23 2006 while riding his bicycle.

The Oberiano family was on hand for today’s signing. Also present were Speaker Judi Won Pat, Health Committee Chairman Senator Frank Aguon, Dr. Tom Shieh and the sponsor of the legislation, Vice-Speaker B.J. Cruz.

Acting Governor Cruz congratulated Vice-Speaker Cruz for his “courage” in introducing the legislation and seeing it through to passage. The Acting Governor said it would “save lives.”

The Acting Governor also signed 2 other alcohol control measures introduced by the Vice Speaker. Bill number 356 which rolls back weekend drinking hours from 4am to 2am. And a third measure that stiffens penalties for establishments that violate the new drinking hours.

The 3 bills signed into law today were all introduced by Vice-Speaker B.J. Cruz. They are among a series of controversial social legislation measures introduced this term by the Vice Speaker.

Cruz has also introduced bills to limit the sale of certain tobacco products, which was passed and is awaiting action by the Governor’s office; and a bill that would permit same-sex domestic partnerships, which has not yet made it to the legislative floor for a vote.

Cruz today said “Its imperative that I do what is important, not passing resolutions and feel good legislation, we’ve got to start dealing with the important issues.

Cruz, who is seeking re-election to the legislature in the fall, said he does not care what impact his progressive legislation has on his chances for re-election saying : ” I don’t care. It doesn’t matter. The important thing is that its the right thing to do.”

  4. Health Info Says:

    IS YOUR SUNSCREEN DANGEROUS?

As we’re all diligently slathering on sunscreen to prevent cancer, out comes a new report suggesting that ingredients in many brands — including the most popular ones — may actually raise cancer risk, and that’s not the only health problem associated with them.

It isn’t just a single common ingredient that new research has raised some concerns about — it’s far worse than that. Many widely available sunscreens contain potentially dangerous ingredients… provide inadequate protection… and are portrayed by their marketers as far more helpful than they actually are.

The list of offenders includes leading brands that you know and trust and even some products designed just for babies.

When the Environmental Working Group (www.ewg.org) issued its 2010 guide to the best and worst sunscreens, the nonprofit watchdog gave its OK to just 39 products — which amounts to a mere 8% of the 500 sunscreens evaluated!

When I saw this newest report, I immediately placed a call to EWG research analyst Nneka Leiba, MPH, to find out what’s going on and to see what she thinks we all should know about our sunscreens.

According to Leiba, the FDA bears some serious responsibility for this problem — she said that the agency has had no mandatory regulations for sunscreens or their ingredients.

(Regulations may be in place by October 2010, according to the most recent official estimate.) Companies have not been required to verify that sunscreens work… to test that their sun protection factor (SPF) levels are accurate… or to show that other claims, such as whether they are waterproof or protect against UVA rays, hold up.

We went one by one through the various health hazards we need to know about…

    DANGER: CANCER-CAUSING INGREDIENTS

Leiba told me that nearly half the sunscreens examined by EWG contained one or two cancer-causing ingredients.

One is a hormone-disrupting chemical that penetrates the skin, disrupting the normal functioning of the body in ways that can lead to cancer and other serious medical problems… and the other is a vitamin A derivative that when exposed to sunlight — sunlight! — may encourage skin cancer.

What not to buy: Avoid sunscreens with these dangerous ingredients…
Oxybenzone. A hormone-disrupting chemical linked with endocrine disruption and cell damage (and low birth weight when used by pregnant women).

Oxybenzone can penetrate the skin and enter your bloodstream and is an ingredient in about half of sunscreens.

Retinyl palmitate. A vitamin A compound associated with the accelerated growth of skin lesions and tumors.

Manufacturers put vitamin A derivatives in sunscreens because they are popular antioxidants that slow signs of aging, such as wrinkles and rough skin.

But FDA data suggest that vitamin A has photo-carcinogenic properties, which means that when exposed to the sun, it may speed up cancer formation. EWG found retinyl palmitate in 41% of sunscreens.

    DANGER: NO UVA PROTECTION

Many sunscreens offer protection only from UVB rays — the type of ultraviolet radiation that causes sunburn — while it is known that UVA rays are also destructive and can cause skin cancer… in addition to all those other unattractive things the sun can do to our skin over time.

    What to buy:

EWG recommends purchasing broad-spectrum sunscreens that derive their protective properties not from chemicals that penetrate the skin, but from the metals titanium or zinc, which stay on the surface of the skin, do their job to protect you and then can be washed off entirely.

    DANGER: ACCIDENTAL INHALATION

Sunscreens are meant for external use only, but when you use them in the increasingly popular spray or powder forms, you are in danger of inhaling them.

While inhaled particles of any size can pose a health risk, tiny nanoparticles — ultra-tiny particles used in many of these formulations — can more easily penetrate linings and tissues in your body and cause inflammation.

Advice: EWG suggests using sunscreens only in cream or lotion form and says not to apply any type of sunscreen to broken skin.

    DANGER: YOU’LL GET BURNED

The high SPF levels touted on many sunscreen labels are a growing concern at EWG.

The organization says that these claims are misleading because the products may not provide more protection than sunscreens labeled with lower SPFs — and people may therefore be misled into thinking that the higher number means that they can spend more time in the sun.

It’s not widely understood that SPF applies to only one type of cancer-causing ultraviolet ray — UVB. It tells you nothing about a product’s ability to filter UVA rays.

That’s a false sense of security, warns Leiba. People end up staying out in the sun longer than they can safely tolerate.

    What to do:

Apply safe sunscreen in lavish amounts. Studies show that most consumers use only one-quarter to two-thirds of the amount needed to reach a product’s SPF rating.

Sunscreen should be applied generously (about an ounce or palmful to cover all exposed skin)… early (30 minutes before sun exposure) to allow its protective capabilities to work… and often, typically every two hours (more often when swimming or exercising enough to make you sweat).

There’s no consensus on an optimal SPF: The American Cancer Society recommends that you use a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15… while the American Academy of Dermatology says 30… and the FDA says that any SPF rating above 50 is “inherently misleading.”

HALL OF SHAME: THE WORST OFENDERS

Beware of sunscreens with SPF ratings higher than 50, especially when combined with “baby” on the label. The implication is that they are safe as can be, but the reality is that many offer little or no UVA protection and some also contain dangerous ingredients. The EWG’s “Hall of Shame” indicts…

Banana Boat Baby Max Protect, SPF 100: No UVA protection — and it contains oxybenzone and vitamin A.

Aveeno Baby Continuous Protection, SPF 55: Label says “mild as water,” but warns “keep out of reach of children and seek medical help from poison control center if ingested.” Also contains oxybenzone.

Banana Boat Ultra Defense Sunscreen Stick, SPF 50: Misleading advertising says “it doesn’t break down,” which might lead consumers to think it will last all day.

Hawaiian Tropic Baby Crème Lotion, SPF 50: Does not have the advanced UVA protection advertised on the label, and also contains oxybenzone and vitamin A.

See a full list of EWG’s lowest-rated sunscreens at http://www.ewg.org/2010sunscreen/buyer-beware/.

    HALL OF FAME: TOP-RATED SUNSCREENS

All 39 of EWG’s top-rated sunscreens contain either zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. Top recommendations include…

All Terrain Aquasport Performance Sunscreen, SPF 30
Badger Sunscreen for Face and Body, SPF 30
    Loving Naturals Sunscreen, SPF 30+
Purple Prairie Botanicals Sun Stick, SPF 30
Soleo Organics All Natural Sunscreen, SPF 30+
See a full list at http://www.ewg.org/2010sunscreen/best-beach-sport-sunscreens/.

I wouldn’t be doing my job, however, if I failed to point out that even these EWG-approved products aren’t perfect, as they contain nanoparticles.

Leiba says her organization has deemed them not dangerous… but not everyone agrees: see Daily Health News, June 16, 2009, “Bad Nanoparticles in Good-for-You Supplements,” for our review of safety concerns with products manufactured with nanoparticles.

This Huff Post article makes a helluva read. I can’t believe how evil some of my race can be. I’m an old southern boy, but this is going too far.

    ============================
Two summers ago, I blogged with great concern about a statement made by Justice Scalia in the Supreme Court’s landmark Second Amendment opinion, District of Columbia v. Heller.

Writing for the 5-4 majority, Justice Scalia found an individual right to keep and bear arms and opined that, “If…the Second Amendment right is no more than the right to keep and use weapons as a member of an organized militia … If, that is, the organized militia is the sole institutional beneficiary of the Second Amendment’s guarantee — it does not assure the existence of a ‘citizens’ militia’ as a safeguard against tyranny.”

Regrettably, since the Heller decision, many gun rights commentators have used Scalia’s construct to link the need for unfettered access to firearms with a right to engage in political violence against an administration that has been described as “a secular socialist machine [that] represents as great a threat to America as Nazi Germany or the Soviet Union once did.” The past two years have seen several disturbing acts of politically-motivated violence and a dramatic increase in the number of threats against the president and Members of Congress.
Equally troubling, gun rights activists have begun to openly carry firearms to political events and presidential speeches in a threatening manner.

The High Court’s latest high-profile Second Amendment case, McDonald v. City of Chicago, was decided last week. The same five-justice majority as in Heller incorporated the Second Amendment through the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment, thereby determining that the holding in Heller applies to the states.

In January, the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence’s sister organization, the Educational Fund to Stop Gun Violence (Ed Fund), filed an amicus brief in the McDonald case calling attention to Justice Scalia’s dangerous insurrectionist rhetoric in Heller. “Inherent in the logic of a right to possess firearms for the purpose of resisting a perceived threat of governmental tyranny is that, to some point, individuals are entitled to take the next step and use violence if the government refuses to yield,” the brief stated. To express the Ed Fund’s concern that “‘tyranny’ means many different things to many different people,” we urged the Court to “correct this misapprehension before incorporating the Second Amendment.”

Justice Alito, writing for the majority in McDonald, did not openly refute Scalia’s insurrectionist idea. He did, however, avoid the use of this rationale in explaining the Second Amendment, making it clear that the core purpose of the right is individual self-defense — specifically, to defend “hearth and home” with a handgun.

The two dissents in the case — written by Justices Stephen Breyer and John Paul Stevens –showed no reluctance in criticizing Scalia’s insurrectionist reading of the Second Amendment. Justice Breyer made it patently clear that “the Civil War Amendments, the electoral process, the courts, and numerous other [democratic] institutions today help to safeguard the States and the people from any serious threat of federal tyranny.”

Justice Breyer also wondered why the U.S. Congress would have supported a “substantive right to bear arms free from reasonable state police power regulation” in the wake of a bloody Civil War. “Why would those who wrote the Fourteenth Amendment have wanted to give such a right to southerners who had so recently waged war against the North, and who continued to disarm and oppress recently freed African-American citizens?” he asked.

“The many episodes of brutal violence against African Americans that blight our Nation’s history do not suggest that every American must be allowed to own whatever type of firearm he or she desires — just that no group of Americans should by systematically and discriminatorily disarmed and left to the mercy of terrorists.” As we noted in our amicus brief, “The defeat of the Confederacy cemented the Union’s commitment to quell insurrection and rebellion.”

Perhaps most importantly, however, Justice Stevens pointed in his dissent to a remarkable statement made earlier in the Court’s Term by Chief Justice John G. Roberts. In the case in question, Robertson v. United States ex rel. Wykenna Watson, the Court decided not to examine the question of whether a private person can bring an action for criminal contempt in a Congressionally-sanctioned court.

In his dissent, Chief Justice Roberts wrote, “Allegorical depictions of the law frequently show a figure wielding a sword — the sword of justice, to be used to smite those who violate the criminal laws … A basic step in organizing a civilized society is to take that sword out of private hands and turn it over to an organized government, acting on behalf of all the people. Indeed, ‘The . . . power a man has in the state of nature is the power to punish the crimes committed against that law. [But this] he gives up when he joins [a] … political society, and incorporates into [a] commonwealth.’”

Chief Justice Roberts’ statement is of course a reference to Max Weber’s axiomatic definition of a state. The German political economist proffered in the early 20th century that a political entity is not a state unless it possesses a monopoly of force (i.e., the power to enforce the law).

The concept of a monopoly of force is anathema to those who embrace the insurrectionist idea because it forecloses the use of political violence; which rhetorically — and in some cases in action — seems to be all the rage on the political right. Nonetheless, Roberts was correct. America’s Founding Fathers recognized that a State does not — and cannot — exist unless it upholds its claim to the monopoly on force.

As the author of the Second Amendment, James Madison, put it at the Virginia Ratifying Convention: “There never was a government without force. What is the meaning of government? An institution to make people do their duty. A government leaving it to a man to do his duty, or not, as he pleases, would be a new species of government, or rather no government at all.”

In the interest of domestic tranquility, let us hope that the Chief Justice’s words are embraced by Newt Gingrich (“The Second Amendment is in defense of freedom from the State”), the Cato Institute (“Second Amendment protections are not for the state but for each individual against the state”), and others who are viewed as the intellectual leaders of the modern Conservative movement. They have a responsibility to make it clear to their admirers that under no circumstances can firearms be employed as “tools of political dissent.”

Where has the honor and love of country gone. If one can turn his back on his country so easily just because a nigger is in the White House, then what did it all mean? Was it just a lie?

I fought for this country. I loved it then and I love it now. I’m against uppity niggers as much as the next guy, but I draw the line at taking up arms against my government. I say he’s the President of the United States of America and we should suck it up until we can get the nigger out via the ballot.

I will defend the office he represents against all comers. That includes those who refuse to accept who is now head of our government.

    Drink to beat dementia

A little coffee in the morning, a little booze at night-– two new studies show how your choice of beverage can help lower your risk for cognitive decline and even Alzheimer’s disease.

Let’s follow the clock and start in the morning, where that daily cuppa jo might be more than just a tool to help you wake up: A series of studies published in a special supplement to the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease finds that a little caffeine can slow or even stop brain degeneration.

Researchers say caffeine can slow the production of amyloid-beta, an amino acid found in the brains of Alzheimer’s patients. Caffeine can also help normalize memory in people facing dementia and other cognitive problems, according to the new research.

What’s more, the studies found that caffeine appears to protect against all kinds of cognitive decline–from the typical brain hiccups that anyone can get, to more serious conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease.

Caffeine is packed with other great benefits, and coffee in particular has been linked to a lower risk of diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, colon and prostate cancers, cirrhosis and even gallstones.

Not bad for something you’ll find at the donut shop–just avoid the donuts, and never get your caffeine fix from sugary soft drinks.

Moving to the evening, another new study finds that alcohol –-known as such an effective preservative in the lab–can also help preserve the brain.

I’m oversimplifying, of course–no one’s literally going to pack his or her own grey matter in Grey Goose. But a drink or two at night–remember, keep it moderate–really can help protect against dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, according to the study.

Spanish researchers examined data on 422 elderly people, 176 of whom had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. All of them answered questions about their lifetime drinking and smoking habits–with relatives answering the questions on behalf of the Alzheimer’s patients.

Nonsmoking women who enjoyed a drink or two a day had a 52 percent lower risk of Alzheimer’s disease than those who neither drank nor smoke. Men had a 20 percent lower risk of the life-robbing condition, according to the study published in the regular edition of the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease.

That’s also consistent with previous studies on booze and cognitive health. And, of course, moderate drinking has plenty of other benefits as well, from a lower risk of heart disease and diabetes to longer lives.

If you’re healthy enough to enjoy these habits–and, let’s face it at this point, if you can afford them–there’s no reason not to enjoy your share of moderate booze and caffeine.

I don’t suppose he knows what the word “moderate” means.

Hi Mischa, this is cute : ) Dwayne, liked that youtube vid as well, people will always do the fun thing over the mundane, you don’t need a ‘study’ to figure that one out, I always reference Huck Finn if you need help with any project, I’ve had people paint, carry boxes and all kinds of other traditionally un-fun stuff – usually in exchange for the fun of hanging with me and/or watching me cook/eating the food : )

Troy, patience is its own reward : ) the pics are all just variations of the ‘you should wear that top everyday’ striped top I picked up at Mischa’s clothing swap last year. I suspect, Mischa, like myself, moves in her own time when it comes to requests, there’ve been a few to see my eyes, thighs, etc…I’ll respond if and when I choose to, that’s not an ego thing, it’s just a time/need/want thing. I always do exactly what I want to do, sometimes that’s a good thing, sometimes not, but it is always just the way that it is…

    Ruth, speaking of patience…any word?

I’ll let Mischa respond to that comment re: protecting the Pres (even tho he is a nigger, wtf?) I suppose you want YOUR country back, huh? Hmmm, good luck with that, I see your little indoctrinated idiots standing out in front of grocery stores with pics of Obama sporting a Hitler mustache, you and your ilk are ludicrous. Guam – Gregory Woo is starring in the new Disney movie “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice”. At 27, the former Guam resident is making his dreams come true.

“From doing Sorcerer’s Apprentice, as I go from being an aspiring actor to being an actor, it is such an honor and an opportunity to be able to do what I love to do,” he told KUAM News via phone. Woo left Guam when he was just 3 years old. His mother is Mary Lou Sablan, originally from the village of Agana Heights. He’s been living in New York for the last 9 years, hoping to get a big break.

That came when he was cast as Sun Lok, the evil sorcerer in Disney’s latest feature film, which hits theaters on July 14.

Woo said, “I’m reminded from doing this character, Sun Lok, that actions speak louder than words. I think the imagery of this evil sorcerer that I play is really striking in a way that is so not me, and it’s so something else and it’s captured on film with the magic of Hollywood.” He added, “It’s been such a surreal experience for me, to go from starving actor pounding the pavement to being in a huge Disney, Jerry Bruckheimer, Nicolas Cage, Jon Turteltaub movie. It’s insane.”

Woo, who is half-Chamorro, may only appear on screen for 7 minutes in the new movie, but his face is shown throughout the film, not to mention Woo’s face is on many of the movie’s posters and billboards. “My face is on the side of Macy’s advertising the movie and I was riding in a cab and it just zoomed by and it was just so weird to think that being in this movie my face is everywhere,” he said sheepishly.

The world premiere was recently held at the New Amsterdam Theatre in New York City, where Woo shared the red carpet with co-stars Nicolas Cage, Teresa Palmer, Alfred Molina and Jay Baruchel, along with director Turteltaub and producer Bruckheimer.

Woo says aspiring actors on Guam should always remember, “I always just had a firm belief in myself and surrounded myself with people who loved me and supported me with all my flaws so I would just say do the same. Make sure that you love yourself and you are around people who also feel that way.”

The Sorcerer’s Apprentice is scheduled to be released in theatres nationwide next week.

Woo meanwhile heads back to Los Angeles, California where he will begin filming Herocan with American Beauty’s Wes Bentley.

  20. Health Info Says:

IS AIR TRAVEL BAD FOR YOUR HEART?

It’s become such a hassle to fly that it makes perfect sense to hear that air travel is bad for your heart — but this particular warning has nothing to do with the stresses of late flights and airport security or even the likelihood that you’ll get exposed to illness from a fellow flier.

No, this is different — and it’s important. A recent study from the Harvard School of Public Health found that some people may unexpectedly experience cardiac arrhythmia — extra heartbeats — while flying.

The study brought together 39 men and women (average age was 63), one-third of whom had been diagnosed with heart disease.

Over the two-day study period, they each spent two five-hour sessions in a hypobaric chamber — one session simulated atmospheric conditions at sea level, while the other session created the air pressure conditions you would experience in the cabin of a jetliner flying at 20,000 to 40,000 feet.

The participants’ heart rates were monitored during both tests. Those without heart disease were unaffected, but among those with heart disease, six people experienced arrhythmias… though, interestingly, none were aware of the extra beats.

Calling these findings “statistically significant,” the study’s lead author, Eileen McNeely, PhD, an instructor in the department of environmental and occupational medicine and epidemiology research at the Harvard School of Public Health, told me that researchers are now trying to determine the extent to which they are “clinically significant.”

“It’s obvious that there are some physiological changes associated with flying,” she said, “but we’re not sure about the magnitude of the risk.”

She explained that sustained arrhythmia brings an increased risk for stroke or cardiac arrest. In the study, the extra beats were not sustained, she said, “but we don’t know if this is always the case.”

Dr. McNeely pointed out that the available data document very few in-flight medical emergencies, so the overall risk that this will happen is quite low.

However, it’s worth noting that there’s no research available that follows the health of air travelers after they’ve landed, so we don’t know whether passengers have medical issues later that are connected to arrythmias that occurred in the air.

Dr. McNeely thinks that it is important to learn more about physiological changes people experience while flying to ascertain whether there are specific dangers that warrant taking precautions — or even, for vulnerable people, not flying.

In the meantime, she says it makes sense for airline passengers to follow the health advice currently given to people traveling to high-altitude locations in the mountains.

To prepare for flying, Dr. McNeely advises that otherwise healthy men over age 45 and women over 55 or who are postmenopausal (categories that put people at greater risk of arrhythmia) should…

Drink plenty of fluids — Drink lots the day before you fly and during your flight. Dehydration can make you more vulnerable to cardiac problems. Avoid alcohol for the same reason.

Get plenty of rest. Try to get as much rest in the few days before your flight as you can. In other words, don’t run yourself ragged getting ready with the idea that you’ll get to catch up on sleep once onboard.

Avoid excess stress — Pack early and leave plenty of time to get to the airport and through security. (Interesting note: Noise can be a central nervous system stressor — noise-canceling headphones in flight can help you stay relaxed.)

The risk of in-flight emergency is higher for people with heart disease or who have a lung condition that inhibits oxygen uptake (such as emphysema). For these people, Dr. McNeely advises doing all of the above, plus…

Avoid long walks through the airport. Take the in-airport shuttle so you don’t wear yourself out before your flight.

Ask your cardiologist whether you should bring supplemental oxygen or a portable oxygen concentrator on board.

Under a doctor’s supervision, consider regular supplementation with L-carnitine and Co-enzyme Q-10. Both of these can limit the ill-effects of decreased oxygen delivery to the heart.

Don’t know if you have heard of the nation wide recall of Spaghetti O’s. I haven’t been able to get in so it late but better late than never.
    ____________________________________________________

Campbell’s issued the recall for 15 million pounds of SpaghettiOs with meatballs, some of which made its way here to Guam. The recall was announced after the company determined that a cooker malfunctioned at its plant in Paris Texas and left the meat undercooked.

Campbell’s says its recalling certain lots of the product manufactured since December 2008 “out of an abundance of caution” because they don’t know exactly when the cooker malfunctioned. They think it was recently, but they aren’t sure.

The Agriculture Department announced the recall late Thursday.

Guam’s Department of Public Health, issued a notice of the voluntary recall Friday. The 3 products involved in the recall are :

    *SpaghettiO’s with Meatballs – 14.75 ounce can bearing product code “U5″, 2

*SpaghettiO’s A to Z with Meatballs (14.75 ounce can) bearing product code “4N,” and 3

*SpaghettiO’s Fun Shapes with Meatballs (14.75 ounce can) bearing product code “KS

The product codes are listed on the bottom of the cans.

The release from Guam’s Public Health Department states there have been no reports of illness in connection with consumption of the product and they report that distributors and stores on island that sold the product, have already voluntarily removed it from their shelves.

However they advise that consumers who have purchased any of the implicated products stop using it immediately.

The suspect SpaghettiO’s were available at:

    * Pay-Less Supermarkets at the Micronesian Mall, Mangilao, Dededo and Yigo

    * New Happy Mart in Barridaga

    * Choi’s Market in Maite

    * Kathy’s Mini Mart in Merizo

    * Tumon 7 Mart in Tumon

    * Hanna Market in Dededo

    * California Market in Dededo

    * Super Mart in Mangilao

    * Mobil in Yona

    * Aguon’s Store in Barrigada

    =============================
U.S. scientists who took tissue samples from nearly 1,000 sperm whales discovered high levels of toxic and heavy metals that they say could affect the health of millions of people who eat seafood.

A report last week noted high levels of cadmium, aluminum, chromium, lead, silver, mercury and titanium in the mammals, according to samples taken over five years.

Analysis of cells from the sperm whales showed that pollution is reaching the farthest corners of the oceans, said biologist Roger Payne, founder and president of OceanAlliance. Whales travel on voyages up to 87,000 miles.

“The entire ocean life is just loaded with a series of contaminants, most of which have been released by human beings,” Payne said. “These contaminants, I think, are threatening the human food supply. They certainly are threatening the whales and the other animals that live in the ocean.”

Ultimately, he said, the metals could contaminate fish, which are a primary source of animal protein for 1 billion people — one in seven of the Earth’s population.

“You could make a fairly tight argument to say that it is the single greatest health threat that has ever faced the human species. I suspect this will shorten lives, if it turns out that this is what’s going on,” he said.

U.S. Whaling Commissioner Monica Medina told the 88 member nations of the International Whaling Commission about the report and urged the commission to conduct further research.
