Wonderful Women Of The World: Barbara Boxer And “My Mother”
Posted by Michelle Moquin on September 11th, 2010
I think it is only fair that if I highlight the facts about Fiorina, I should at least highlight some of the facts about Boxer. She deserves equal time too, if not more. Don’t ya think? :)
Before I feature all of Boxer’s accomplishments, or at least some of them; (In contrary to what Fiorina says, Boxer has accomplished quite a lot in her political career) there are many to list, I want to talk about the town hall meeting that took place in Mill Valley yesterday.
I had met my mother Thursday at the opening evening of the first ever Ceramics Annual of America show at Fort Mason in San Francisco. By the way if you have a love for art and especially enjoy clay as an art medium, this is a wonderful show to see.
So anyway, my mother is not a computer person; doesn’t even own one or have the desire, so I am pretty much her source when it comes to gathering information that she can’t find in her newspaper. She is an avid reader when it comes to “the paper”, and is constantly clipping things for me that I may miss on line, which occasionally I do, so I am grateful.
When I had heard about the town hall meeting with Fiorina and that supporters of Boxer, were going to show up, I thought this would be a good way for my mother to get involved. She has been a supporter of Boxer for as long as Boxer has been involved in politics and used to help with her campaigning many years ago. I thought my mother might want to show up at the meeting and jump back into the game. I also downloaded a schedule of the phone banks in Marin that were within 5 miles of her house should she want to participate in calling constituents.
My mother did gather outside the town hall meeting yesterday with other Boxer supports. She called me last night and the first words that came put of her mouth were, “I loved it!” She had held up signs and passionately kind of took the lead with a few others. Doug and I had joked that we just might get a call from my mother in jail. She can be rather verbal about her passions. I guess fruit doesn’t fall too far from the tree. :)
She reported to me that those in support of Fiorina were, in her words “Nasty”, using expletives as they shouted out dissing Boxer…even their signs were nasty words towards Boxer. But mom said that outside of a few loose tongues, the Dems were pretty decent, and Mom encouraged them to not stoop to the level of the Republicans.
As se spoke to me, she was fired up, I could tell. To hear the enthusiasm in my mother’s voice was exciting for me. I knew that she would feel the synergy of support and she would get the bug to get more involved. And she did. She is meeting again today in protest of Prop 23, and she is going to be phone banking for the next 3 weeks. Ya gotta love it. I do.
One of the things that my mother said to me before we hung up was how she didn’t understand why more people didn’t get involved. She said, “I won’t even be around to get the benefits of much that I am in support of but I still want to participate.” I smiled and said, “Mom, if others thought more like you…if others jumped in to participate knowing that they may not benefit in their lifetime or even if they are around they wont benefit directly, but others will, and that that reason alone was important enough to show up, for others, for our future, the world would be so different.”
She was so grateful that I inspired her to want to get involved. She kept thanking me. I am so proud of my mother for believing enough in me to take the lead and go for it. My mother’s enthusiasm is contagious – she always has been. And I know that she is the impetus of a ripple has just begun.
So…back to Boxer…
Barbara Boxer
In these challenging economic times, Senator Barbara Boxer’s top priority is getting California back on track and getting Californians back to work.
Senator Boxer supported the 2009 economic stimulus plan, which is protecting and creating American jobs. She coauthored the bipartisan Invest in the U.S.A. Act, to encourage companies to bring overseas profits back to the United States to create jobs here. She has worked to provide funding for the Manufacturing Extension Partnership program, which would help American manufacturing companies remain competitive and keep jobs in the United States. To keep jobs and investment at home, she called for ending the tax break that companies receive for moving plants overseas.
Senator Boxer wrote the first-ever law to authorize federal funding for afterschool programs, so that children have a safe and enriching place to go at the end of the school day. She also wrote the law that provides businesses with an enhanced tax credit for donating computer equipment to schools, and she is a strong supporter of the tax deduction to help pay for the costs of a college education.
Boxer has been a strong supporter of health care reform measures to put patients first throughout her career. To provide quality health care, Boxer authored one of the first bills in the Senate to combat HMO abuses and to enact a Patients’ Bill of Rights – so that medical decisions are made by doctors and patients, not HMO bureaucrats. She has written a bill to provide a tax deduction to help pay for the cost of health insurance premiums, and she believes that all Americans should have access to the same health insurance program that members of Congress have. Senator Boxer supports allowing Americans to purchase lower-cost prescription drugs from Canada. And, she has been a strong advocate for increasing medical research funding to find cures for diseases.
As Chair of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, Boxer believes that a strong economy and a healthy environment go hand in hand. One of her top priorities has been to address climate change, fighting for legislation to create clean energy jobs and reduce carbon emissions.
Boxer wrote the law to ensure that drinking water standards are set to protect children and other vulnerable populations and fought the Bush Administration’s attempt to allow more arsenic in drinking water. She supports expanding the program to clean up toxic waste sites, and she is pushing to ensure that polluters – not taxpayers – pay to clean up the mess. And, since 2005, she has won passage of legislation to protect as wilderness more than one million acres of pristine land in California.
Following the September 11 attacks, Boxer authored and fought for a bill to increase security in our transportation system and at our ports as well as to provide assistance to local first responders. She wrote the law allowing airline pilots with special training to carry guns in the cockpit, the law requiring that air marshals are on board high-risk flights, and the law that ensures California’s entire rail system is eligible for security grants to protect against possible terrorist attacks.
In 1990, while a member of the House, Boxer authored the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), which became law in 1994 as part of the comprehensive federal Crime Bill. Senator Boxer was also a strong advocate of the COPS program to put more police on the streets and directing stimulus funding to the COPS program.
Boxer is the Chair of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee and also chairs the Senate Ethics Committee, the only Senator to chair two committees.
She also serves on the Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee, where she is a member of the following Subcommittees: Consumer Protection, Product Safety and Insurance; Aviation Operations and Security; Oceans, Atmosphere, Fisheries and Coast Guard; Science and Space; and Surface Transportation and Merchant Marine Infrastructure, Safety and Security.
On the Foreign Relations Committee, Boxer chairs the Subcommittee on International Operations and Organizations, Human Rights, Democracy and Global Women’s Issues.
Boxer started her career in public service in local government, serving six years as a member of the Marin County Board of Supervisors, including becoming the first woman to be elected by her peers as Chair of the Board.
Boxer was elected to the House of Representatives in 1982 and represented the Bay Area for 10 years. In 1992, she was elected to the Senate, making history with Senator Dianne Feinstein, as the first time two women had been elected as Senators from one state. Elected to a third Senate term in 2004, she received more than 6.9 million votes – the highest vote total for any Senate candidate in U.S. history.
Before her career in public service, Boxer was a stockbroker, graduating from Brooklyn College with a B.A. in Economics.
Boxer and her husband Stewart have been married for more than 40 years and have two children, Doug and Nicole, and four grandchildren.
And if that’s not enough….here are just a few of Boxer’s accomplishments:
Highlights of Senator Barbara Boxer’s Record
• Led the fight to secure passage of the Water Resources Development Act. As Chair of the Environment and Public Works Committee, Senator Boxer worked with Ranking Republican Jim Inhofe of Oklahoma to write a comprehensive water resources bill. In 2007, they secured passage of the Water Resources Development Act, which authorized $1.3 billion for 54 flood control, ecosystem restoration and navigation projects in California. Senator Boxer successfully fought to pass the act and override a veto by President George W. Bush.
• Helped secure funding for additional C-17 aircraft built in Long Beach. Throughout her career in the Senate, Boxer has consistently led the fight for continued production of C-17 aircraft produced in Long Beach. In 2009, Boxer teamed up with Republican Senator Kit Bond and helped secure $2.2 billion in the Emergency Supplemental Appropriations Act for the purchase of 8 additional C-17 aircraft.
• Designated more than 1 million acres of federal public land in California as wilderness. The 2009 Omnibus Public Lands package included three bills authored by Senator Boxer designating more than 700,000 acres of federal public land in California as wilderness. In October 2006, the President signed into law Senator Boxer’s Northern California Coastal Wild Heritage Wilderness Act, which designated over 273,000 acres in California as wilderness. In December 2002, Senator Boxer’s provision to protect 57,000 acres in Big Sur and the Los Padres Forest became law.
• Wrote the first-ever specific authorization for after-school programs. In 2001, Boxer worked with Republican Senator John Ensign to successfully write and pass the first-ever authorization with specific funding levels for after-school programs. After-school programs are now being funded at $1.13 billion, serving more than a million children.
• Helped secure tax incentives to bring overseas profits back to the United States. Senators Boxer and Republican Senator Ensign crafted legislation encouraging American companies to bring overseas profits back to the United States. The Invest in the USA Act provision created American jobs and stimulated investment in technology by reducing the corporate tax rate, for a one-year-period, to a 5.25 percent tax on earnings by foreign subsidiaries if the funds were reinvested in America.
• Helped secure more than $370 million for the San Francisco Airport BART extension. Between 1998 and 2005, Boxer helped secure more than $370 million for the BART to SFO project. The BART SFO project constructed an 8.7 mile, four-station rapid rail transit extension of the 95-mile BART system. Additionally, the finished project provided direct BART service to the San Francisco International Airport and a cross-platform transfer between BART and Caltrain, a 77-mile commuter rail service on the San Francisco Peninsula, at the Millbrae terminus station south of the airport. BART estimated that the project would create between 50,000 and 70,000 jobs during the construction period which was expected to begin in Spring of 1996.
• Worked to include COPS and EDA funding in the economic recovery bill. Senator Boxer made a series of calls to Obama Administration officials, including Vice President Biden and National Economic Council Director Larry Summers, and made the case for increased funding for community police and funding for Economic Development Agency grants that spur job creation in economically distressed areas. The Obama administration announced that cities across California will receive more than $211 million to hire police officers as part of the economic recovery package. The Recovery Act also included increased funding for the EDA by $150 million.
• Authored legislation requiring that homeowners be alerted if their lender sells their home mortgage loan. Senator Boxer passed an amendment to the housing bill requiring that homeowners be alerted within thirty days if their lender amtor transfers their home mortgage loan. This information helps homeowners avoid foreclosure.
Readers: There is so much more that Boxer has accomplished in her political career. Be like my mother, and find the enthusiasm that you have for a candidate and support them – make your support contagious and be the impetus of ripple that begins in your community. Do it. (Thank you:)
Cynthia: Nicely said. Like many women, we’re in support of women, but not “any” woman.
Zen Lill: Hey. I realized I neglected to address your question the other day. I am not sure that I write exactly the way I speak, and I’m not sure I understand what you mean by “normal circumstances”. I used to think my writing was my speaking in print, but the more I write the more I doubt it.
Although I used to let my emotions get in the way of my words over a passionate subject, now I am able to articulate better on the fly, in person. However, writing does give me the time to say what I want to say with all of the time in the world to say it. Or I should say, with all of the time that I need to say it, so inevitably my writing is different than my speak.
I think that if I spoke exactly as I wrote it would make me feel too one dimensional. And that conclusion is just meant for me. Because I am the blog writer who writes a monologue almost every day, to talk exactly like how I write would be just too much for me every day. So, that being said, although my passions and my feelings are the same, I like that I am a quite different here than in person. Although I think it is one of the reasons why many of my friends opt out of the “blog conversation”. They are experiencing a new side of “me”, a new way of speaking, through my blog, that they aren’t used to – At least that is what two of them eluded to me over a year ago.
Oh….and it seems your fans are begging for more. :)
Helen: I enjoyed the video a lot. I am so bothered by the plight of the polar bear, so this really pulled at my heart. Thanks for sharing.
Suzanne: I clicked on it but there was no nissan commercial. Was t different than Helen’s? Ill try again later.
Peter: Sorry you are having trouble. Hafa Adai.
Peace out everyone – Enjoy your saturday!
Lastly, greed over a great story is surfacing from my “loyal”(?) readers. With all this back and forth about who owns what, that appears on my blog, let me reiterate that all material posted on my blog becomes the sole property of my blog. If you want to reserve any proprietary rights don’t post it to my blog. I will prominently display this caveat on my blog from now on to remind those who may have forgotten this notice.

Once again we have to put up with the white boy not being able to get enough of himself. He feels that what he does is so important that it must be shoved into our faces via the news medial outlets he controls 24/7.
Ergo we are forced to hear almost on an hourly basis about this asinine white boy preacher Terry Jones who threatens to burn Korans if the moslems don’t call off building a center in downtown Manhattan.
It is stupid and hypocritical that a supposedly man of the cloth would be preaching such hate. It would not get any serious consideration except for the white boy giving the creep national air time 24/7.
Let me add that nothing counter to Christianity’s teachings done by any white representative of that faith will seem hypocritical to the white boy. After all, they call what any logically thinking person would call Satan’s Pit, the Bible Belt.
It is a place where the absurdly hypocritical was and still is practiced every day in their places of worship. They go their to hear God’s words of loving thy neighbor while practicing segregation in the very church. They see no disconnect. It is as if the anti-Christ believes his own press.
If the white boy can burn the Koran because of 9/11, then blacks in the South should be allowed to have regular Bible or at the very least Confederate Flag burnings.
Can you imagine how that would go over. The airways would be filled with outraged white boys claiming sacrilege and white racism.

13th Air Force Public Affairs
9/10/2010 – JOINT BASE PEARL HARBOR-HICKAM, Hawaii — The 613th Air and Space Operations Center here will serve as the command and control hub for Air Force, Navy and Marine aircraft participating in exercise Valiant Shield 10, scheduled near Guam, Sep. 12 though 21.
Valiant Shield is a joint field-training exercise focused on integrated training among U.S. forces.
This training enables real-world proficiency in sustaining the joint forces’ ability to detect, locate, track and engage units at sea, in the air, on land and in cyberspace in response to a range of mission areas.
“Valiant Shield is an excellent venue to forge stronger working relationships with our sister services –
it allows us to strengthen our ability to command, control, and execute AirSea battle during any contingency in the Asia-Pacific region,” said Col. Alan Kollien, the 613th AOC Vice Commander and Joint Force Air Component Commander during Valiant Shield.
“We will test our ability to provide command and control from more than 3,000 nautical miles away in Hawaii despite operating in a heavy jamming environment that degrades communication lines and denies space capabilities.”
More than 100 aircraft will participate in Valiant Shield, including U.S. Air Force B-52 Stratofortresses, F-15C Eagles, F-15E Strike Eagles, F-22 Raptors; KC-10 Extenders, KC-135 Statotankers, and E-3 Sentry Airborne Warning and Control System aircraft. U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps aircraft and equipment participating in Valiant Shield include F/A-18 Hornets, E-2C Airborne Early Warning aircraft, HH-60 Helicopters, AV-8 Harriers, ground attack aircraft and Omega tankers. Aircraft will fly from Andersen AFB, Guam to conduct sorties in various exercise scenarios.
A joint team of Airmen, Sailors and Marines will work in the 613th AOC here, and in the airspace around Guam to enhance joint combat skills and interoperability.
“I’m looking forward to training and the feedback this exercise will provide the Aces of the 613th AOC and for the opportunity to once again train alongside our Sister Services,” said Col. Wade Thompson, 613th AOC Commander.
Valiant shield is conducted in the U.S. Pacific Command Area of Operations and is designed to train Joint Task Force 519 functional components, including the Joint Force Air Component Command, on operational tasks with an emphasis on interoperability.
This is the third Valiant Shield exercise conducted by the United States. The first Valiant Shield was conducted in June 2006.
Throughout Valiant Shield, safety and the environment are a top priority and were thoroughly integrated during both the planning and execution phases of the exercise.

Want to Net Some Extra Cash?
Nicole Woolsey Biggart, PhD
Historically, a bad economy is good for direct-sales companies, such as Mary Kay, Avon, Fuller Brush, Tupperware, The Pampered Chef and others, that rely on independent, work-from-home salespeople to sell their products and services.
In troubled times, more people work for these companies because of job layoffs or because they want to earn extra income.
Our recent economic downturn has been no exception, with many direct-sales companies reporting sharp increases in new recruits, people who are eager to become their own bosses and earn income from both commissions and/or bonuses based on recruiting others into their ranks.
However, although recruiting numbers may be up, the Direct Selling Association (DSA) reports a downturn in overall sales to consumers in recent years — $29 billion in 2008 from a 2006 peak of $32 billion.
Result: A greater number of salespeople competing for a smaller chunk of business.
While making a go at direct selling could be harder than ever, it still is a good opportunity for certain people — could it be for you?
REALITY CHECK
At any given time, some 15 million Americans work in direct sales.
Product sales commissions usually range between 25% and 50% of the retail price. In some companies, you can earn an additional 3% to 5% commission on sales made by others you recruit.
Yet most people who try direct sales soon give up. After expenses — including the cost of buying inventory and transportation to make sales calls –
most people wind up earning $10 to $15 an hour, typically working fewer than 20 hours a week. These people earn a median wage of $2,400 annually, according to the DSA.
In rare cases, those who are very good at selling can make $30,000 annually by working a 40-hour week. Only about 10% manage to make direct sales a full-time job.
WHO CAN SUCCEED?
Ultimately, these jobs are all about selling — and you will make real money only if you are an effective salesperson. Companies do not provide a list of potential sales contacts, so most people who succeed in direct sales already have a large social network.
Those who do well also tend to have the “right” personality.
If they are not outgoing, they are at least comfortable knocking on doors or calling people they may not know… have a “thick skin” that can handle frequent rejection… and are self-motivated and disciplined.
MAKING IT WORK
Before you choose a direct-selling company to represent, consider the following…
Be product-practical. At the very least, you should choose a well-known, established company that sells products you know about, have a passion for or would personally use.
Your passion for, or knowledge of, a specific product will make you a more effective salesperson. To find a potential fit, visit http://www.directselling411.com, where you can check off your interests and learn about appropriate companies.
The best direct-sales products tend to be those that benefit from personal in-home demonstrations.
Examples: Knives (shoppers can’t experiment with them in retail stores)… cosmetics (it’s impractical and can be intimidating to try them out in public)… and water purifiers (in regions where water quality is an issue).
Talk to veterans. Research a company’s reputation with an online search. Look for Web communities of sellers.
Examples: http://www.mydswa.org... http://internetbasedmoms.com/direct-sales… or http://www.directsalesmoms.com.
You also can check the Better Business Bureau (www.bbb.org) to look for filed complaints.
If you are interested in working for a specific company, ask to be put in touch with several of its longtime direct sellers. New recruits tend to be enthusiastic but lack the experience to be realistic about their success.
Speak to people who have had direct-selling experience with that company for years. Ask these veterans about the difficulty finding customers… their opinion of the products…and the company’s payment process.
(Direct selling is a cash business, and money should flow back to sellers quickly — or they should be able to keep their share of the receipts.)
Look for DSA membership. Companies that belong to the DSA (www.dsa.org) must subscribe to minimal industry standards.
These include a “buyback” policy if you decide to quit the business, which allows you to return unopened and unsold products purchased within the prior 12 months for 90% of the price you paid for them (so you are not stuck paying for inventory you can’t sell).
Another industry standard is having payment structures based chiefly on sales to consumers, not from recruiting other sellers (so your main job is not to recruit more members but to sell goods).
Most companies require new recruits to purchase an initial startup kit — typically for $100 or less — that includes a sample inventory of their most sellable products, “how-to” information, and brochures and materials for customers.
Avoid working for any company, including members of the DSA, that charge more than $150 for a startup kit.
Good direct-selling companies make money by getting you into a position to sell, not by loading you down with products that sit in your garage.
Personal interviewed Nicole Woolsey Biggart, PhD, former dean of the Graduate School of Management and professor of management and sociology at University of California, Davis. An expert in social network industries, she is author of Charismatic Capitalism: Direct Selling Organizations in America (University of Chicago).

I couldn’t get in yesterday. But today is 9/11. It would be a day to remember what happened to 3,000 civilians in a war waged upon us by some sick people.
But it has been turned blown out of all portions by the Right. They wants us to make the day a sacred day of mourning because that will enable them to evoke the date to engender thoughtless hate and legitimize racism and bigotry.
Has anyone noticed no such movement was launched to scarify the day Thimothy McVeigh targeted a building with a day nursery to blow up in Oklahoma City. I guess that was okay because a white boy did it.
Once again we are required to just get over the evil white America forces us to endure while any angst they suffer must live in infamy.

I was sent this by a friend. It says a lot about the lengths white society will go to to keep a brother down.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
NEW YORK — When Mike Tyson looks back on his friendship with Tupac Shakur, he thinks about the rapper’s big heart, explosive anger – and the one regret he has about their relationship.
“He always wanted me to smoke weed with him, and I never did it, and I wish I did,” Tyson said in a recent phone interview.
Tyson said he declined because he was a closet smoker and didn’t want it to get out that he smoked the drug. Now, when he looks back on the lost opportunity, he says: “That’s my biggest regret.”
Tyson’s friendship with Shakur is the subject of a new documentary, “One Night in Vegas: Tyson & Tupac,” which airs Tuesday on ESPN (8 p.m. EDT).
The 25-year-old rapper was shot after a Tyson fight in Las Vegas on Sept. 7, 1996; he died six days later.
“He didn’t last long, but the time he did last, every minute, every tenth of a moment was explosive,” Tyson said.
The documentary chronicles their relationship, which Tyson said took hold when he was imprisoned in 1992 for rape.
“Every day, he would call me or get a chance to call me or send a message,” said Tyson. “He would get word to me in prison.”
By the time Tyson was released in 1995, Shakur would be jailed for sex abuse; he was released on bond later that year. When he got out of prison, Tyson and Shakur’s friendship deepened. Both found it difficult to find people who truly cared for them, Tyson said.

People are always advising us black men to take responsibility for our actions. I am willing to do that. In fact I do that on a daily basis.
Now let me turn that around. White men you should be as equally responsible.
You should be ready to take the full consequences for your past acts, and to take responsibility for the well being of others at the same time.
But my experience with you is that you recoil from taking responsibility for anything you have done to others: You deny; you ignore; You blame; you avoid.
If you learn to say “Yes, I am responsible.”
When you speak those words with honesty and sincerity, then you will be respected.

This would be the republican party chairman on Guam.
================================
GUAM- The Republican party was out in full force at the Fiesta resort.
The occasion: a fundraiser with a special guest speaker, Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele.
Steele’s visit looks to strengthen the Republican party both locally and nationally.
Having just arrived on Guam hours before the event, the former Lt. Governor of Maryland wasted no time taking the stage and delivering his message.
“The realities of this moment are that we as a party stand strong.
You cannot afford to sit on the success of our current governor. He would not expect you to do that. This is a building moment. The leadership has been in place to help us move forward and now you must, you will, united, together, republican!!”
There is no doubt that the Republicans definitely brought out the big guns.
Chairman Steele’s visit couldn’t have come at a better time as the Republicans are fresh off a brutal primary election.
Despite a Republican unity pledge that was signed months ago, both campaigns had their share of mudslinging.
Chairman Steele’s visit may be just what the Republicans need to motivate them in their bid for Adelup and the legislative majority.
Senator Frank Blas comments, “Its a tremendous boost not only to the party here on Guam, but to the party through out the nation.
As he had promised, Guam’s needs are going to be addressed by the Republicans in the house and the senate as well as our assurance that we’re going to retain Adelup as well as regain the majority in the legislature.”
If there was any division in the party, it was hard to tell last night.
Governor Camacho, all of the Republican senatorial candidates as well as the Calvo Tenorio team, all came out to support their party. Another less publicized appearance may also go a long way to help unite the party.
Senator Jim Espaldon states, “This one’s going to be quite interesting. We have two powerful sides. We have a great representative in Eddie Calvo and Ray Tenorio. You’ve seen the numbers that came out in support of them.
You know what former Governor Gutierrez and Frank Aguon can do. I think it’s going to be a very close race to tell you the truth.
I think with the chairman of the national committee coming out here, it gives us a starting point to start rallying around amongst ourselves. Bring up the enthusiasm and really go out there and work for the vote.”
Noticeably absent was Espaldon’s Adelup running mate, Lt. Gov. Mike Cruz. Regardless, the Republicans had a very strong showing, which they hope will continue through November.

My grandmama is always worrying about falling down. She has poles on the poles. We have found it to be a source of amusement in the past.
But after reading this article, I have changed my mind.
===================================
Fears can lead to falls
There’s nothing worse than a self-fulfilling prophecy–and if you worry about falling, there’s a good chance you might fulfill that prophecy.
A new study finds that seniors who fear falling the most have a higher risk of actually falling, even if they’re otherwise unlikely to take a spill.
In fact, 40 percent of seniors who have a low actual risk of falling but a high level of fear actually end up taking a tumble.
It’s as if fear itself is trying to give you an unfriendly push.
Researchers divided 500 people between the ages of 70 and 90 years old into four groups based on their perceptions of their risk and their actual risk.
Most people–69 percent–knew exactly where they stood. They had a low risk of falling and knew it… or a higher risk and also knew it.
But the remaining 31 percent had a bit of a perception gap. Researchers divided them into two groups: “anxious” and “stoic.”
The anxious seniors had a low physiological risk of falling, but strong fears that they could fall–and those fears came true, because researchers say these seniors fell more often than the should have, statistically speaking.
These patients were also more likely to show symptoms of depression and harbor irrational fears, according to the study in BMJ.
They had lower qualities of life, less executive function, and did worse on stability tests than those who had a better understanding of their risks.
The stoics, on the other hand, didn’t think they had a high risk of falling–but, physiologically speaking, they probably should have been more concerned about their risk.
“Denial” might have been a better word than “stoic.”
But denial isn’t always a bad thing–because the study found that these seniors had a better quality of life, higher levels of strength, better stability, a lower risk of depression and fewer irrational fears than those who had a more accurate perception of their fall risk.
On the other hand, all that denial didn’t stop these patients from falling when all was said and done–so maybe that stoicism should have been paired with just a touch of rational fear, or at least awareness.
The researchers say this study shows that docs shouldn’t just consider their patients’ risk of falling… but their perception of that risk.
After all, seniors who fall for any reason have a higher risk of hospitalization, institutionalization and even death.

My grandmama has fallen in the past. Not seriously, but I am now committed to taking the situation more seriously.

This scares me. I wonder if Obama has a chance to win next time around,
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Corporate interests are trying to buy our elections and our current election laws are making it possible. In fact, they’ve promised to spend $400 million to do so and that’s exactly why our campaign to change those laws is so important.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
What can we do to offset all that money?

Here’s an example of them not playing fair Lea.

Dear Fellow Conservative,
David Limbaugh, a practicing lawyer and New York Times bestselling author, proves — beyond a reasonable doubt — that President Barack Obama is guilty of crimes against liberty.
Limbaugh builds a devastating case against Obama, detailing how his presidency is ambitiously unraveling the Constitution, actively rooting out American traditions and values, and encroaching upon our unalienable rights as Americans.
Find out the shocking revelations in his controversial new book, Crimes Against Liberty, that just debuted at #1 on the New York Times bestseller list. If there was ever a must read, this is it.

Thanks for the article about Barbara Boxer. She has my support. I am a registered republican. Our whole family have been registered republican for over 60 years.
But this year, I will do what I did in the Obama election. I will vote democrat. Mrs. Boxer will get my vote.

Hi Misch, I commented this am but just wanted to address this post quickly, as usual I envy your relationship with your mother, don’t have that myself and just for the record, I love that she is active on the scene even though it nmight not be her who reaps the bene’s, that’s the makings of good karma in action. I admire that and I admire the mother/daughter thang you two have going on.
I hear you in your comment to me, I do speak as I write, the only diff is that when I wrote no one gets the privelege of interupting to put in their two, they must wait till later to respond…this makes for good monopoly of ranting time, if I ranted obn in person like soometimes I do here you know sonmeone else would be interjectiong spomething in either agreement or to the contrary. I ahve used the written word to convey my deepest and darkest to lovers at times bc of this factor, often it makes for great reading and deeper understanding and presents a nice jumping off point for a good conversation later ; ) clear the air and then a cleaning of – never mind : )
Jock, I think you’ll be waiting a long time for that, but I like that you said it and that you are willing, it says a lot about who you are, unfortunately, it also says a lot about most white males, too.

Zen Lill
I wanted to answer Jock. While I was asking myself what a white girl could say to a black man, you said it.
It was everything I wanted to say but didn’t know how.
Thank you
Ditto from Zen Lill for me to Jock

The dentist pulls out a numbing needle to give the man a shot.
‘No way! No needles. “I hate needles” the patient said.
The dentist starts to hook up the nitrous oxide and the man objects.
“I can’t do the gas thing. The thought of having the gas mask on is suffocating me!”
The dentist then asks the patient if he has any objection to taking a pill.
“No objection,” the patient says. ”I’m fine with pills.”
The dentist then returns and says, “Here’s a Viagra.”
The patient says, “Wow! I didn’t know Viagra worked as a pain killer!”
“It doesn’t” said the dentist,
“but it’s going to give you something to hold on to when I pull your tooth.”

Automatic Bill Payment Risk…
Rick Miller, CEO
Sensible Financial Planning and Management
An increasing number of people have bill payments taken directly from their bank accounts. Risks: You may incur late fees because of computer errors that can take months to correct…
when overcharges occur, you may be less likely to catch them, because payments are automatic and you do not have to review every month’s bill before paying it… it can be hard to stop making payments when you decide you no longer want a product or service…
canceling multiple payments at the same time — for instance, if you are robbed and need to protect against identity theft — can be very difficult and time-consuming.

My girls and I finished our morning breakfast. And as usual we finished the last hour discussing the characters who write in on your blog site.
We started with 6 regulars but two years later we are now 23. We could be much larger but we voted not to include anyone unless someone drops out. No one has in two years.
Today we marked our anniversary with the question “How does she do it?” You never miss a day!
You are definitely someone we want to meet. We mostly born and raised New Yorkers. We are doctors, lawyers, accountants, nurses, judges, politicians, housewives, business owners and trust fund babies.
We are married, single, straight and gay. The only three things we all have in common are that we are born and raised New Yorkers, we are female and we all love your blog.
It can truthfully be said that your blog is the reason we are who we are. Women who have come together to help other women improve their lives.
Most of us were strangers before you started your blog. But today we are as sisters. We are GIRLZ.
Most of us don’t believe the alien stuff, but we all love reading about it. Viv and poor Adam who obviously loves AH are the overall favorites.
I prefer Zmiv while I wait to see the personality of Xur develop.
We write in occasionally. Usually anonymously to see if we can pick each other out.
Thank you Michelle for making our lives better.

You can try this at home very frequently to get good results.
One word of caution about homemade tooth whiteners.
However, not all can afford an expensive dental treatment.
