Ohio man who held 3 women captive hangs himself

The Cleveland man serving a life sentence for holding three women captive in his home for a decade hanged himself in his prison cell, officials said Wednesday in another startling twist in the case that appalled and transfixed the city.

Ariel Castro, 53, was found hanging around 9:20 p.m. Tuesday at the state prison in Orient, said JoEllen Smith, a spokeswoman for the corrections system. Prison medical staff performed CPR before Castro was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

“He took the coward’s way out,” said Elsie Cintron, a neighbor who lived up the street from the former school bus driver in Cleveland. “We’re sad to hear that he’s dead, but at the same time, we’re happy he’s gone, and now we know he can’t ask for an appeal or try for one if he’s acting like he’s crazy.”

There was no immediate comment from his three victims.

Castro was sentenced Aug. 1 to life in prison plus 1,000 years after he pleaded to 937 counts, including kidnapping and rape, in a deal to avoid the death penalty. At his sentencing, he told the judge: “I’m not a monster. I’m sick.”

Castro had been in protective custody because of the notoriety of his case, meaning he was checked every 30 minutes, but was not on suicide watch, which entails constant supervision, Smith said.

An autopsy showed the death was suicide by hanging, said Dr. Jan Gorniak, Franklin County coroner. Gorniak would not comment on the circumstances in which Castro was found.

The three women — Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight — disappeared separately between 2002 and 2004, when they were 14, 16 and 20 years old. They were rescued from Castro’s home on May 6 when Berry broke out part of screen door and yelled to neighbors for help.

Elation over the women’s rescue soon turned to shock as details emerged about their captivity. Castro fathered a child with Berry while she was being held. The girl was 6 when she was freed.

Investigators also said the women were bound with chains, repeatedly raped and deprived of food and bathroom facilities. Knight told investigators she was beaten and starved to force her to miscarry over and over.

No one answered the door Wednesday morning at the home of Castro’s mother and brother.

In Castro’s old neighborhood, Jessica Burchett said his suicide had short-circuited the life sentence.

“It does give a little bit of closure to the families and people that got affected by what he did,” she said, “but at the same time he deserved to be in there for his life because of what he did to those girls.”

At the home of Berry’s sister, a woman who didn’t identify herself said from the porch that there would be no comment. An officer in a passing patrol car kept watch on the street.

Wearing their familiar red berets, members of the Guardian Angels volunteer patrol group stationed themselves outside DeJesus’ home and said her family didn’t want to be bothered as the community absorbed the news.

Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson said in a statement: “I ask the community to continue to respect the privacy of the survivors so that they can move forward with their lives.”

Messages left for the women’s lawyers were not immediately returned.

Castro was watched closely in the Cuyahoga County Jail in the several weeks after his arrest and before his guilty plea, with logs noting his activity every 10 minutes. He was taken off the suicide watch in June after authorities determined he was not a suicide risk.

Castro’s attorneys tried unsuccessfully to have a psychological examination of Castro done at the jail before he was turned over to state authorities following his guilty plea, his attorney, Jaye Schlachet, said Wednesday. Schlachet would not comment further.

In an interview last month, Schlachet and attorney Craig Weintraub said that their client clearly fit the profile of someone with sociopathic disorder and that they hoped researchers would study him for clues that could be used to stop other predators.

Good morning!

Girls: Do you know what’s in your make-up? I know most of us love make-up, whether we wear a lot or a little. But do we really know what we’re putting on our faces? I do and I HOPE you do too, because most of the ingredients in the popular brands are toxic.

I like to wear as little make-up as possible just because I feel more comfortable with less. And, when I do wear make-up, I make sure that I am putting the least amount, if any, of those toxic ingredients on my face.

Although I am in the fashion business, you can laugh at me, but I don’t go for the designer make-up with the expen$$ive price tag. I get my thrills shopping at Whole Foods or other natural food stores for the makeup that is the least damaging to my skin. Dr. Hauschka is one of my faves – I love it.

Good morning.

Men in power positions continue to blame women – the victim. You would think that from all of the backlash that men receive from blaming the woman, when she is the obvious victim in stated horrific scenarios, that men would stop blaming the woman. Hell no. It continues.

In Montana Judge G. Todd Baugh recently sentenced a 14-year-old girl’s rapist to 15 years and then suspended it to just 30 days in prison.  Who cares, if hundreds protested in front of the court house. Who cares if tens of thousands signed a petition calling for the judge’s resignation. He’s sticking with his decision and he sees nothing wrong with it. He blames the 14-year-old girl, who he claims was acting “older than her chronological age” and “as much in control of the situation” as the 49-year-old teacher who raped her.  Sick.

By the way, the 14-year-old girl ended up committing suicide 2 years after she was raped. She is not the only young rape victim who has taken her own life after being raped. Our young girls, who are the victims, are blamed and bullied when they need to be understood, supported, and cared for. The messages they receive is that they are the ones to blame, and that is something that needs to be stopped or boys/men are going to continue to rape and get away with it.

Judge Sparks Protests After Sentencing 14-Year-Old Girl’s Rapist To Just 30 Days In Prison

A Montana judge who recently sentenced a 14-year-old girl’s rapist to just 30 days in prison is defending his decision, even as hundreds of peoplepicketed the courthouse in protest on Thursday. Although State District Judge G. Todd Baugh doesn’t see anything wrong with the sentence itself, he has apologized for his comments that the rape victim acted “older than her chronological age” and was “as much in control” of the situation as her rapist.

In 2007, a Montana teacher named Stacey Rambold raped a 14-year-old girl who later ended up committing suicide. On Monday, Baugh gave him 15 years in prison for his crimes — but suspended all but 30 days of that sentence. And when arguing the case, Baugh noted that the 14-year-old girl was acting “older than her chronological age” and “as much in control of the situation” as the 49-year-old teacher who raped her.

That sparked considerable backlash. More than 30,000 people signed onto a MoveOn.org petition calling for the judge’s resignation. “Baugh places the responsibility for the situation on a troubled child — one who committed suicide just two years later — and excuses the criminal actions of an adult who violated the ethical standards and trust of his community,” the petition reads. “Baugh has engaged in the worst kind of victim shaming.”

And members of the community rallied at the Billings, Montana courthouse on Thursday afternoon, holding signs demanding justice for the victim, Cherice Moralez, and calling for Baugh to step down. “The demand and goal of this is to ask the judge to resign. The broader message is to really unite as a community against victim-blaming,” the protest’s organizer, Sheena Davis, explained. Davis noted that the protesters hoped to address “a larger issue on how we protect children from rape in this justice system.”

The victim’s mother, Auliea Hanlon, called the sentence was a “travesty” and said she was “horrified.” Hanlon told CNN that she was particularly upset about the judge’s comments that Cherice was somehow in control of the situation. “How could she be in control of the situation? He was a teacher. She was a student. She wasn’t in control of anything. She was 14,” she said.

Baugh has since issued a public apology for those statements, saying he “deserved to be chastised” for suggesting that Cherice was actually in control. Since she was just 14 years old, the relationship between her and her teacher is considered to be statutory rape — and particularly since Rambold was abusing his place of authority, it’s inappropriate to insinuate that he and Cherice were on equal footing.

The Montana judge has defended his sentence, however, saying that he believes Rambold is at a low risk of becoming a repeat offender. The prosecution entered into a “deferred prosecution agreement” with Rambold after Cherice’s death — which means the charges against him would have all been dismissed if he had successfully completed a sex-offender treatment program and met other terms, like avoiding contact with children. But he broke some of those terms, and that’s why his case ended up before Baugh. The sentence ended up being rolled back to 30 days because Baugh determined the scope of infractions weren’t serious enough to merit more time in prison.

Unfortunately, Cherice is hardly the only young rape victim to take her own life. Earlier this year, 17-year-old Rehtaeh Parsons killed herself after her school administration ignored evidence that she had been raped and her peers bullied her. And 15-year-old Audrie Pott killed herself after being allegedly gang-raped at a party, during which boysscribbled messages all over her unconscious body.

Good morning!

I realize many of you are probably out enjoying the Labor Day Holiday, and soon I HOPE to be out too. However, the fact that this is Labor Day prompts me to post a personal opinion because of the need to point out again that the republicans have been against anything Obama is for.  When Obama announced that he will leave it up to Congress to decide whether he should take action that he wants to take, he showed that his beliefs as a Constitutional lawyer and his belief that a President has to obey that Constitution. More importantly he wanted to make it more difficult in the future for a president to take this country to war on his own.

The traitorous actions by the House of saying no to anything Obama wants is not lost on the Russians. For the first time in our history the Russians are sending members of their own to argue against a President of this nation. Why? Because they know that this bunch of bigots will once again decide for a white person of any country, rather than support a black man. No surprise there.

Labor Day to these hypocrites is merely an opportunity to lie to the people. They are firmly behind the 1% that are paying them to make it profitable to send American jobs overseas.

Obama is simply trying to send a message to those that would use chemical weapons upon civilians, that when the United Nations of the world decided that was something that would trigger a military response, that it would.  Just because those nations only gave lip service to the edict, doesn’t mean Obama should. Wouldn’t we be disappointed if he did? I know I certainly would. It would be not be characteristic of him.

In the past those same white led nations have used their power to subjugate and plunder OTW nations. They have set themselves up as holding up moral standards to lead the planet by. Yeah right. But once again this is but another example of that hypocrisy. The British allowed Hitler to take country after country until it became apparent that their security was in jeopardy. By then it was too late and we had to enter to save their sorry cowardly ass.

This behavior has repeated itself in modern history by every nation led by a white man including America. Obama is simply saying he refuses to take the cowardly way out.  He is standing by the principle that was agreed upon by every nation that is a member of the United Nations, including Syria, Russia, China, and Great Britain, that the use of chemical weapons will not be tolerated. Again, if he decided to go along with the crowd, wouldn’t you be disappointed? I know I would.

Watching those white run nations cop out just shows that in general white men are gutless when it comes to standing on principle when they have to put some skin in the game. It seems Obama is the only one with a pair. Like the republicans in our country, to them principle and morals are but sound bites they use to justify their positions and to move their constituents to vote for them.

It is truly a sorry state of affairs that a foreign power has recognized the degree of racism in this country in one of our Branches of government that it feels it can send a delegation to that branch to argue against the President of our country. They know that they can interfere in our internal politics because it is blinded by racism. Sickening enough for you? Happy Labor Day.
