Have Phone, Will Travel

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 22nd September 2009

During the presidential election last November, I was so excited to be a participant in hope….a participant in the energy of bringing Obama to the white house. But it didn’t end there. I know as well as you know, that that was just the beginning of our work. I look back, and getting Obama into the white house was a piece of cake compared to all of the challenges we face daily in getting something done for this country.

Because of the economic climate, expectation is high. Because of those that don’t want our president to succeed, the party of no continues to hit low.

But as Obama says, “I’m asking you to believe. Not just in my ability to bring about real change in Washington…I’m asking you to believe in yours.”

Well, to believe in your ability is one thing, but in order to believe in it, one has to back it with action. And for me personally, sometimes I feel like I am not doing enough. And when I feel that way, I take action. How about you? Want to have a little fun with people who believe in their abilities like you do?

I read the below letter from ‘Organizing for America’ and I thought, “Yeah, this could be fun”, so I signed up.

Last week the President laid out his health reform plan and challenged Congress to act. OFA volunteers leapt into action, generating hundreds of thousands of signatures and calls to show grassroots support. Now we need to reach out in our communities, spread the facts about the President’s plan, and bring new voices of support into Washington.

If you can spare your lunch hour (or a couple of hours whenever you’re free), you can help make it happen. Here’s how: Organize or attend a “Health Reform Phone Booth.”

It’s simple: Just join up with other supporters in a public area where people will pass by, distribute fact sheetsabout the President’s plan, and help folks call their members of Congress on the spot to voice their support.

Sign up now

You can search online to see if there’s a booth already set up near you. But if not, just host your own! We’ll give you all the materials, phone numbers, and step-by-step instructions you need to make it a success — and when you register your Phone Booth online, other OFA volunteers can join you to lend a hand:

http://my.barackobama.com/SeptPhoneBooth

Passing health reform won’t be easy — they’ve been talking about it in Washington for almost a century. But we know that when ordinary people who believe in change reach out, spread the facts, and help folks from all walks of life make their voices heard, we can make history.

Thanks for making it happen,

Jeremy

Jeremy Bird
Deputy Director
Organizing for America

Let me interject here….If you’re one of those that has a hard time asking for what you want…asking others to join you in what you believe in…then break out of your shell and take a risk. You’ll be surprised that it isn’t that hard and you’ll actually have some fun, and more importantly you’ll discover that you do believe in your ability to bring about real change in Washington.  I know I believe, and if you read below, you’ll see that others believe too.

P.S. — In August we asked a few OFA volunteers to test out running a Health Reform Phone Booth in their area, and we got great reports — even from folks who were pretty nervous before they began. Here are just a couple:

I will confess that I questioned my decision to host an event the instant I hit the send button. I imagined myself on a street corner, handing out fliers like the guys hand out restaurant flyers. Relief struck when the first volunteer signed up with me. Imagine how thrilled I was when 15 had signed up!… We distributed 300 phone booth sheets and 600 info sheets… The best part, one of our volunteers was 79 1/2 years old. She was remarkable. Thank you for this opportunity. I am very glad I did it, no matter how nervous I was.
– Mark P. from New York, New York

We had two veterans tell us that they were very happy with the VA system, and one vowed to write a letter to the editor to dispel the myths that that system doesn’t work. Many people thanked us for having a booth and for trying to dispel the lies being spread by opponents of reform.
– Mike O. from Bozeman, Montana

*************

Readers: Well…how about breaking out of your shell? How about believing in your ability by taking action? All you need to do is give an hour or so of your time. Easy. Do it. Thanks for all you do. And for you Bay Area locals, I look forward to seeing you out there this week!

Peacin’ out…..

Scam 101: Know The Terms (Part 4)

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 16th September 2009

Good morning!

Ready to be scammed again? If you’re saying, “Hell No!”, read on ’cause your BFF might be the one scamming you. Of course not on purpose, but when moolah is involved, things can get pretty sensitive. This scam  is called ‘Affinity Scam’. Don’t ya just love that title? Gives the word ‘affinity’ a whole other meaning when followed by the word ‘scam’. “So what is an affinity scam?”, you may ask.  Well…here’s your answer:

Affinity scams. “Affinity” means a close resemblance or connection. When someone you know well — at your church, for instance — recommends a way of making money or buying a bargain, which turns out to be bogus (often they may do this innocently), that’s an affinity scam.

Hmm…we blogged the last time about Ponzi schemes. I would say that many of those people that got scammed by Madoff probably told all of their friends, who then also go scammed. I think the term ‘affinity scam’ would apply here, don’t you?

Want to know more and how to avoid being party to an ‘affinity scam’? The info is in this article.

*************

Zaranja:  I’m sorry to say that  although Madaline is on a mission and she is close, she is not near this planet. I wish you well.

Ruth: Loved your ‘educational snippets’. Loved the West Wing too. How I used to watch that show wishing that our president was more like the West Wing’s president Jed Bartlet. Now we have a president who truly cares, who truly wants the best for the American people…and the racists and the republicans want only to ruin everything so they can ‘take their country back’, whatever that means. Looking forward to more.

Anonymous #13: Right on. Love an optimistic attitude. Keep it coming.

Anonymous #14 & 15: You have both made some really good points. It follows suit with Al’s ‘educational snippets’ that he has been posting, specifically “Inequality Destroys Democracy”. Think there is any chance your thoughts will come to life?

Evelyn: That video is unbelievable. And yes I can’t stress enough, “very scary.” These people are so misinformed and ignorant. They can’t even tell you why they don’t like something. I just have to repost it for my readers. Thank you for including the link to this DC ‘tea party’. I had heard about it but did not see any footage until now.

Readers: You must watch this insanity if you haven’t already.

TX: I believe that Obama needs to tread a tad lightly in his first term in order to keep his supporters and his approval rate high and more importantly to solidify a second term. He needs to get re-elected for a second term in order to really make some progress. And when he does…watch out. We are going to see a totally different president. Have a little patience and faith. I think our president knows what he is doing.

Zen Lill: Love that your program is kicking some ass (cheeks:). The girls are loving it, and you’ve got quite a following. So cool. Looking forward to speaking today. Oh… and would love to see those dance moves sometime :-P

George? George? Are you out there?

Readers: We may not hear from him again. I guess I hit a sore spot with George. Was I ‘too cruel’?  I think it is interesting that he thinks it is okay to down talk women…he thinks it is okay to call Jews ‘kikes’, he thinks it is okay to call black people ‘Mud people’, but he thinks I am ‘too cruel’ by pointing out his small dick.

Some things have been on my mind. Let me make it clear in case some of you may still think I am knocking him for his ‘size’. George can’t help that he was not blessed with a big dick. I am not knocking him for his size. I am knocking him because he compensates for his size. So why should he knock people for being Jewish or for being black or for being gay?  They too are born as they are. Not that there is anything wrong with them as they are, there isn’t. But they too, like George, don’t have a choice.

For all of the racist remarks that jews, black people, and all otw’s experience, I would have no doubt that they at times may wish that they were white, just so they could be treated fairly, just so they could have the same opportunities as the whites. But do you see jewish people or black people, or any other otw, or gay people compensating for what god gave them? No. So I don’t think I’m being ‘too cruel’. I doubt George will ever understand my logic though.  His racism is too deep rooted.

George: We hope to hear from you again. As my readers have pointed out, you are a great representation of the racists out there and you ‘keep us on our toes’.

Now I need to get off my ass and onto my toes and skip out of here.

Peace out.

Gratefully your blog host,

michelle

Obama’s Speech On Health Care, Ted Kennedy’s Passion Lives on

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 10th September 2009

Good morning.

So…did all of you watch our president address health care to congress last night? I was on my way to the store when I heard that he was about to speak, so I turned around and went back home.

Let me back track for a minute….

Just the other day I was listening to the radio and heard this speech that Ted Kennedy gave on health care back in April 2008. I also learned while listening, that supporters of Obama’s health care reform had dropped from over 65% down to 44%. And my thoughts were, “What is happening out there?” We were all so gung-ho during the presidential election….constituants, (Yes, you ‘n me!) doing everything we could to get more people excited about Obama. Where did our momentum go? “Where is Oprah’s voice in all of this?”, I asked some friends over the weekend.  The answer with chuckles all around: ‘We’ll have to wait and see when the new Oprah season starts.” Funniness aside, health care can’t wait.

And then last night Obama gave the speech that I think we all needed to hear. It was the speech where our president did everything he needed to do, and yes, that included calling out the republicans for all of their rhetoric and lies.

On a side note: For those of you who still think that Rep. Joe Wilson knows what he is talking about in regards to his “You lie!” outburst, which was not only disrespectful but completely false, check out  FactCheck.org, the non-partisan organization that debunks his claim that health care reform would mandate coverage for illegal immigrants:

H.R. 3200: Sec 246 — NO FEDERAL PAYMENT FOR UNDOCUMENTED ALIENS
Nothing in this subtitle shall allow Federal payments for affordability credits on behalf of individuals who are not lawfully present in the United States.

So moving on…

Obama went on to say “…I will continue to seek common ground…” and “My door is always open.” (However, we have a caveat coming up.)

“But know this: I will not waste time with those who have made the calculation that it’s better politics to kill this plan than to improve it. (Applause.) I won’t stand by while the special interests use the same old tactics to keep things exactly the way they are. If you misrepresent what’s in this plan, we will call you out. (Applause.) And I will not — and I will not accept the status quo as a solution. Not this time. Not now.”

I like that part.

So back to Ted Kennedy. What a touching moment it was when president Obama talked about the letter that he received from Sen. Kennedy, a letter to be delivered upon his death. This is what Obama had to say about the letter:

In it, he spoke about what a happy time his last months were, thanks to the love and support of family and friends, his wife, Vicki, his amazing children, who are all here tonight. And he expressed confidence that this would be the year that health care reform — “that great unfinished business of our society,” he called it — would finally pass. He repeated the truth that health care is decisive for our future prosperity, but he also reminded me that “it concerns more than material things.” “What we face,” he wrote, “is above all a moral issue; at stake are not just the details of policy, but fundamental principles of social justice and the character of our country.”

I don’t know about you, but with a statement like that, what person would not want to put their party aside and come together for ‘the character of our country’?

Here’s a bit more:

“On issues like these, Ted Kennedy’s passion was born not of some rigid ideology, but of his own experience. It was the experience of having two children stricken with cancer. He never forgot the sheer terror and helplessness that any parent feels when a child is badly sick. And he was able to imagine what it must be like for those without insurance, what it would be like to have to say to a wife or a child or an aging parent, there is something that could make you better, but I just can’t afford it.”

“That large-heartedness — that concern and regard for the plight of others — is not a partisan feeling. It’s not a Republican or a Democratic feeling. It, too, is part of the American character — our ability to stand in other people’s shoes; a recognition that we are all in this together, and when fortune turns against one of us, others are there to lend a helping hand; a belief that in this country, hard work and responsibility should be rewarded by some measure of security and fair play; and an acknowledgment that sometimes government has to step in to help deliver on that promise.”

Ted Kennedy may be gone, but his passion and inspiration lives on.

Readers: Comments? Thoughts? Blog me.

I have no time this morning to respond to any of the comments from yesterday’s post, except to say, “ditto to Steve’s request”  Alexander: “I want more too.”

Go Take A Hike – Happy Labor Day!

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 7th September 2009

Good morning!

What better way to enjoy a day off of work,  than to be out in nature. Do something for your body and more importantly, your mind. I always find that a walk in nature really adds so much joy to my life. Everytime I venture off onto the trails around here, I always wonder why I don’t do it more often.

Go take a hike today – for yourself. Enjoy!

Here’s an article I found to inspire you:

HIKE YOUR WAY TO HEALTH

Every fall, I remember why I fell in love with hiking. The dictionary dryly defines a hike as “a long walk,” but in my mind it’s much more than that. To me, going for a hike involves leaving behind the hustle-bustle of life and heading into nature, whether a park, local woods or a mountain. It’s refreshing and restorative because hiking is both mentally and physically engaging. According to Seth Levy, manager of the Western Public Lands Initiative at the American Hiking Society, the sport of hiking is becoming more popular. “Hiking engages us in the natural world by enabling us to explore an endlessly changing environment, the shifting seasons, natural quiet and variable terrain,” he said. It can also be a good workout, he noted. “More people are finding that hiking helps build aerobic capacity, burn calories, increase muscle mass and increase bone density, while also enhancing mental health. While some of these benefits are true of exercise in general, what makes hiking unique is that it is accessible, self-explanatory, inexpensive and fun,” said Levy, and, there is no age limit.

FIRST STEPS FOR NEW HIKERS

There is no better time of year to go hiking than now, where in most parts of the country the weather is cooling down and the autumn colors are at their best. Here are some tips to get you going:

Wear appropriate shoes and clothing. Wear shoes that support your foot and ankle, with a firm sole and a deep, durable tread for traversing uneven terrain. Always wear socks, even if the weather is hot, choosing ones that fit snugly and comfortably, preferably made of either wool or synthetic fibers — never cotton as it can cause blisters. Wear comfortable synthetic clothing, which keeps you cool by wicking moisture in warm weather, but insulates when it is cold. If you are going into the mountains, be prepared for rapid changes in weather by dressing in layers.

Drink up. Hydration during exercise is always important and in the mountains even more so. The ideal beverage should have sodium in it to aid in fluid retention.

Begin slow and easy. “Start slow, enjoy the scenery, and increase your pace as your fitness and level of comfort increases,” Levy advised. The first time you go hiking is not a time to set difficult goals. Keep in mind that hiking a mile on uneven terrain is very different than simply walking a mile on city sidewalks. The strain will be greater and it will take longer, so plan accordingly.

Set realistic fitness goals. “You can use the same formula for planning your hiking workout as with walking or running,” Levy noted, assuming you have some basic level of fitness, no health risk factors and are hiking at fairly moderate altitudes (under 8,000 feet).

Go exploring. You can find hiking trails near you by contacting the state and/or local parks and recreation department or you can go to the American Hiking Society’s Web site for direct links listed state by state atwww.americanhiking.org/helpfullinks.aspx. Many of these resources provide trail maps and suggestions for day hikes, including mileage and a description of terrain. Outdoor stores such as REI and Eastern Mountain Sports generally sell hiking magazines and books listing trails and hike details for different regions of the country.

INTERESTED IN SPEED HIKING?

Those interested in kicking it up a notch might want to consider speed-hiking, a sub-sport of hiking that is gaining momentum. It combines the benefits of fast-paced aerobic exercise with the muscle-strengthening benefits of altitude climbing (or hill climbing, for those who hike on flatter terrain). As with other forms of exercise, hikers can alter their experience to boost heart rate, burn fat, build muscle and enhance aerobic capacity.

Hikers average about two miles an hour, while speed hikers generally cover around four to five miles/hour. On a typical outing, a speed hiker may combine jogging, running, and, if hills or mountains are part of the terrain, uphill climbs and downhill sprints. There’s no “right” pace at which to hike, he notes. “You might boost the challenge of a day hike by increasing your pace, where other hikers want to surpass official or unofficial records for hiking certain trails in certain amounts of time. Choose a pace, comfort level and goals that are right for you.”

For more on the physiological impact of speed hiking I spoke with John E. Davis, PhD, a professor of exercise and health science at Alma College in Alma, Michigan. He told me that between four and five miles an hour is considered the “break point” where you begin to derive some cardiovascular benefit — and if you are going uphill, even better.

Of course, as with any form of exercise, it is important to take certain precautions in order to minimize your risk of injury. Risks of speed hiking can include…

Falls. Moving quickly on uneven terrain makes it easy to fall, so the proper footwear is even more important. “Hikers who have balance issues and elderly hikers might want to seek out trails that don’t have a lot of obstacles,” said Dr. Davis. Look for trails that are well maintained.

High-altitude or mountain sickness. “At altitudes greater than 8,000 feet, the barometric pressure is lower, the amount of oxygen that you breathe in is less, and as a result exercising becomes more difficult,” said Dr. Davis. (Examples of these high altitudes would be in the Rocky Mountains range, the Sierra Nevada and the Cascades.) Symptoms of high-altitude sickness include headaches, breathlessness, fatigue, nausea or vomiting, and swelling of the face, hands and feet. If hiking while on vacation, be sure to adjust to the altitude before hiking, and make sure you are well hydrated.

HIKE YOUR OWN HIKE

While speed hiking may seem like a challenging and fun way to get a great workout, it should not be done at the expense of enjoying your hike. “The quality of your hiking experience, whether it is for enjoyment or to achieve your fitness goals, does not necessarily depend on your pace,” said Levy. “Hike at whatever pace is comfortable or effective for you. There is a saying in the hiking community that expresses this well: ‘Hike your own hike!’ ” For more information about hiking and safety tips, contact the American Hiking Society at www.americanhiking.org.

Texting And Driving: Just Don’t Do It

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 6th September 2009

Drinking and driving  is passé…wait a minute, it never was fashionable. At best, it will get you a DUI and jail time, if you don’t have a good lawyer, and worse, a whole lot of other mess. Not to mention the harm to the innocent victims should someone else be on the road at the same time you are.

But what about texting and driving? The latest habit of irresponsible drivers can be lethal too. PSA out of the Uk put out this very graphic video about the dangers of texting and driving. It’s graphic but I think it drives the point home. No pun intended. This is some serious stuff and if I had kids I would be showing them this video.  And hey, show it to your adult friends too – kids aren’t the only ones behaving stupid and reckless.

Okay Readers: Did you get sick to your stomach? I can tell you I did. Literally. Is your texting message really worth risking your life and the lives of others? Be smart. Pull over if you absolutely must text.
