Obama’s Speech On Health Care, Ted Kennedy’s Passion Lives on
Posted by Michelle Moquin on September 10th, 2009
Good morning.
So…did all of you watch our president address health care to congress last night? I was on my way to the store when I heard that he was about to speak, so I turned around and went back home.
Let me back track for a minute….
Just the other day I was listening to the radio and heard this speech that Ted Kennedy gave on health care back in April 2008. I also learned while listening, that supporters of Obama’s health care reform had dropped from over 65% down to 44%. And my thoughts were, “What is happening out there?” We were all so gung-ho during the presidential election….constituants, (Yes, you ‘n me!) doing everything we could to get more people excited about Obama. Where did our momentum go? “Where is Oprah’s voice in all of this?”, I asked some friends over the weekend. The answer with chuckles all around: ‘We’ll have to wait and see when the new Oprah season starts.” Funniness aside, health care can’t wait.
And then last night Obama gave the speech that I think we all needed to hear. It was the speech where our president did everything he needed to do, and yes, that included calling out the republicans for all of their rhetoric and lies.
On a side note: For those of you who still think that Rep. Joe Wilson knows what he is talking about in regards to his “You lie!” outburst, which was not only disrespectful but completely false, check out FactCheck.org, the non-partisan organization that debunks his claim that health care reform would mandate coverage for illegal immigrants:
H.R. 3200: Sec 246 — NO FEDERAL PAYMENT FOR UNDOCUMENTED ALIENS
Nothing in this subtitle shall allow Federal payments for affordability credits on behalf of individuals who are not lawfully present in the United States.
So moving on…
Obama went on to say “…I will continue to seek common ground…” and “My door is always open.” (However, we have a caveat coming up.)
“But know this: I will not waste time with those who have made the calculation that it’s better politics to kill this plan than to improve it. (Applause.) I won’t stand by while the special interests use the same old tactics to keep things exactly the way they are. If you misrepresent what’s in this plan, we will call you out. (Applause.) And I will not — and I will not accept the status quo as a solution. Not this time. Not now.”
I like that part.
So back to Ted Kennedy. What a touching moment it was when president Obama talked about the letter that he received from Sen. Kennedy, a letter to be delivered upon his death. This is what Obama had to say about the letter:
In it, he spoke about what a happy time his last months were, thanks to the love and support of family and friends, his wife, Vicki, his amazing children, who are all here tonight. And he expressed confidence that this would be the year that health care reform — “that great unfinished business of our society,” he called it — would finally pass. He repeated the truth that health care is decisive for our future prosperity, but he also reminded me that “it concerns more than material things.” “What we face,” he wrote, “is above all a moral issue; at stake are not just the details of policy, but fundamental principles of social justice and the character of our country.”
I don’t know about you, but with a statement like that, what person would not want to put their party aside and come together for ‘the character of our country’?
Here’s a bit more:
“On issues like these, Ted Kennedy’s passion was born not of some rigid ideology, but of his own experience. It was the experience of having two children stricken with cancer. He never forgot the sheer terror and helplessness that any parent feels when a child is badly sick. And he was able to imagine what it must be like for those without insurance, what it would be like to have to say to a wife or a child or an aging parent, there is something that could make you better, but I just can’t afford it.”
“That large-heartedness — that concern and regard for the plight of others — is not a partisan feeling. It’s not a Republican or a Democratic feeling. It, too, is part of the American character — our ability to stand in other people’s shoes; a recognition that we are all in this together, and when fortune turns against one of us, others are there to lend a helping hand; a belief that in this country, hard work and responsibility should be rewarded by some measure of security and fair play; and an acknowledgment that sometimes government has to step in to help deliver on that promise.”
Ted Kennedy may be gone, but his passion and inspiration lives on.

Hi Michelle,
Just love Ted Kennedy and all he stood for.
“Rally”
The day President Bush addressed the nation saying he had given the order for all U.N. inspectors to pull out of Iraq I watched the stock ticker for a half hour straight. For that entire half hour not a single stock reported losses or stayed unchanged; every one I saw went up. Therein lies the true reason for our war against Iraq. Our entire economy hinges upon the dollar’s current status as the favored world currency, and that favor hinges on its being the only currency accepted for the sale of oil. With our economy already in dire straits Iraq began preparing to accept the euro for sales of oil. This would have disastrous consequences, so naturally our military intelligence found weapons of mass destruction and the invasion / occupation began. While people marched in protest in the streets the stock market continued its pro-war rally.

HOW TO REDUCE THE RISK OF CANCER FROM GRILLED MEATS
Americans love their grilled meat, and so the discovery a few years ago that grilling creates carcinogens dismayed untold numbers of people. But worry no more, there are some easy solutions — scientifically validated and tasty, too. Common spices — rosemary, but also other members of the mint family including basil, oregano, sage, savory, marjoram and thyme — can be used to reduce or block the formation of cancer-causing substances.
The carcinogens formed in grilled meat are called heterocyclic amines, or HCAs. Scientists at Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas, have been studying HCAs, hoping to find ways to reduce or eliminate them so people can continue to enjoy this summertime favorite. J. Scott Smith, PhD, professor of food chemistry and toxicology and head of the project, told me that the process of grilling creates HCAs in all meats, including beef, pork, chicken and fish. His team found that rosemary can reduce the formation of HCAs by at least 30% and sometimes completely. Sprinkling fresh rosemary directly on uncooked chicken or fish or marinating it in, say, olive oil with rosemary, does protect against HCA formation.
For those who don’t like the texture of fresh rosemary, Dr. Smith offers a few other solutions. One is to brush the meat with rosemary powder extract or capsules, sold in health stores or available on-line (for example, vitacost.com or e-vitamin.com). If using capsules, open one up and then just brush a small amount of the powder onto meat.
The other way to achieve this protective effect is to use any of the other mint-family herbs listed above in a marinade. It is best to let the meat sit in the marinade for 30 minutes to an hour, he says, but even a few minutes will help… just a little bit of herbal antioxidants applied to the surface has a happily strong protective effect.

Yes, the speech was powerful, but the disgusting repugs were up to their old tricks. They floated the be rude and disrespectful to the black President balloon. So far it seems not to have worked.
==========================================================
WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama accepted a South Carolina Republican’s apology for shouting, “You lie!” during his speech to Congress, and House Democratic leaders showed no interest in sanctions against Rep. Joe Wilson.
Obama said Thursday that Wilson apologized “quickly and without equivocation” and the congressman told reporters the shout-out was “spontaneous.”
“We all make mistakes,” Obama told reporters, a day after Wilson stunned the president and his colleagues with his outburst.
Infuriated Democrats briefly considered sanctioning the four-term congressman, but decided early Thursday that doing so might distract lawmakers from getting an agreement to overhaul health insurance.
“It’s time for us to talk about health care, not Mr. Wilson,” said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif.
Wilson’s behavior generated plenty of talk.
He erupted after Obama stated that his health care overhaul would not “insure illegal immigrants.”
======================================================
So he was forced to apologize. But the major news media don’t seem to find it too unamerican.

Obama rallied dispirited Democrats, reassured disenchanted independents and intimidated Republicans. He called a lie a lie, and pledged to call out the right-wing thugs if (well, when) they continue lying. He fired a shot across the bow of some of the self-professed fiscal conservatives

Hi Mischa, thanks for posting this, excellent video…I’ve forgotten just how much pain Kennedy and his family had in his lifetime. I love that Obama just stays on point and doesn’t let Wilson or any other naysayer, no matter how much publicity they get or in reality how rude they are, he just keeps on keeping on, love it…!
Ok, so today…Barbara, Susan, Caroline and 4 nameless cousins, Maple, Janet, Stacey, Reba, Ma Qin, Anna and the Chammarras(!), and welcome Uwella – after this, you’ll be women of MM blog, ok, would love to address you all but it’s getting long : )
Sooo…We’re already squeezing the G note in the bum 15 minutes while walking briskly to the store to pick up whole foods only fruit/veggies/fish & chicken, right? And – throughout the day we are doing 4x’s more of squeezing/holding at random – try holding that squeeze for 30 second intervals, 5 seconds off, 30 seconds SQUEEZE (& if you want you could up the ante and add the kegel squeeze at the same time, 30 second interval training there, too, oh yeah…!), see what I just added to your holistic routine? ; ) hopefully you’ve been doing these anyway, but just in case you have not, it was worth a mention. We are also already rolling our shoulders back and down to get the ta’s up and tummy in while taking that 15 minute walk. So here’s what you’re adding today: before you head out the door – lie on your back on the floor and stretch your arms way above your head and your toes towards towards the opposite wall – pretend there’s white light flashing out of those toes and fingertips, sound new-agey?, you’ll be amazed at how much doing and visualizing that gives you ‘through the roof’ energy and enthusiasm (if you’ll let it), hold this pose while squeezing your bum, pulling and holding that belly button down at your spine and feel those hip flexors/legs and sides/shoulders just lengthen, hold for 30-60 seconds and head out! Focus on how you feel, not the way you look – think – am I standing straight, shoulders back/ta’s up? Is my bum as tightened as I can get it so I don’t lose my 1,000 dollar bill? : ) you get the drift…
That’s it for today, tomorrow will be a nice surprise…

No IT department in their right mind would have “state of the art”, complicated systems controlled by a bunch of tired old white guys. Yet, this nation is being managed by these gasbags.

The health and general welfare of the public is a public concern, therefore there should be a public option for the good of the country. End of story.

I loved the outburst; it was an honest expression of passion. Of course, it broke protocol, but when the President is bustin’ balls like he did, you’ve got to expect something like that. The best part about the outburst the statement was and is ABSOLUTELY TRUE.
Pubs haven’t been invited to talk about health care since April and Obama & company have been using ridicule as a tactic to avoid honest debate rather than reach across the aisle as claimed.
We do need health care reform; we just need reasonable people to devise a responsible plan and a universal law that reasonable people just don’t exist in the circles of partisan politics.
September 10th, 2009 at 1:37 pm
It was an amazing speech and I was not disappointed at all. He will do whatever it takes just like we had hoped he would.
We are dealing with an honest individual here – something this country has not had to deal with in many years. Everyone needs to get behind this bill and support it because as he said, we cannot afford the alternative which is to do nothing.
Let’s put away partisan politics – or any politics – and do what is best for everyone in the USA – pass health care reform now. I am just a lowly worker – nothing special and not a politicianor an executive of anything. I speak for myself, my family who has uninsured members and senior citizens like me who struggle to make ends meet and are looking at more expensive health care needs as we age.
Fortunately, I still have a job with insurance – that may not be the case forever. Have a heart folks – yes this means Republicans too – GET ER DONE NOW!
September 10th, 2009 at 1:50 pm
Gz
Either you are an idiot or a hypocritical bigot, but for certain you are a liar. The liar was Wilson. He knows as I am certain that you do too that there is a provision in the bill that denies those benefits for illegal aliens. (Sorry TAO, but then you may be legal)
Why you assholes continue to use lies, scare tactics and anything else you can think up to get your way is beyond me. Common decency, love of country, moral consciousness, any of the above could deter you from some of the worst of your tactics if you had any of them.
I would hate to meet the people you would call “reasonable.” You are one sick puppy. If Obama has been using ridicule, what do you call what the repugs have been doing?
What is ABSOLUTELY TRUE is repugs will use any tactic, stoop to any low, make any claim to stop Obama. They could care less about the people of or the state of this country.
They scream “Country first.” Only they spell “Country” M – E.
White but learning to see the black too.

The GOP is definitely on its way out the door when Wilson and Boustany (Boustany?) are the biggest Republican names of the day. It’s a messy and loud departure, but Republicans will never be remembered for anything positive.
Those who use Lincoln are conveniently forgetting that the post Civil Rights GOP is a distinctly different party than its predecessor.

You tell em’ Al. I actually am unfazed by the repug fanfare, they’ll always be the the way they are and all the wishing in the world won’t change that. As long as Obama sticks to the agenda of getting something done re: health care. It’s going to be difficult as long as the old white guy circuit makes money owning insurance companies that are for profit only. But it still needs to be done, so so what if it happens with repugs kicking and screaming and behaving badly?
I’m actually a bit concerned, more than a bit really – about where this war in Afghanistan is heading, things are not good at all there and won’t be for a long time, how are we going to end that money sucking war? Anonz, any thoughts on the subject? Anyone else with an insight on that subject?

You bet your ass I believe in the Confederate Flag. It stands for the people who built this country. WHITE PEOPLE!
Not that you would know it being that you are living with a jew. One of the original mud people. Actually worse. They want to be white so bad that we have to thin out their ranks with a little barbecue every once in a while.
We are being warned every day about the influx of wetbacks in our country. They are going to out number us if we are not careful. We got to do what we can to prevent our bitches from aborting our little white babies.
The problem is that passing laws to keep our women in line forces the wetbacks, sand niggers, and such to keep their little animals too. At least we have the nigger problem in check. With AIDS and by keeping the males in prison we can keep those beasts numbers down.
Actually, I’m more worried about the niggers. They have to force change. The jews and the rest of the mud people can blend in easier by marrying our women. Their breeds tend to do whatever they can to show their loyalty to the white race. All this talk about how terrible the white man is. And the breeds will do anything they can to prove they are white. Hell, they are more violent against the niggers and mud people that real white men.
That’s fine for now. The time will come for us to proudly fly our Flag again. Then we will separate those muds from our ranks. The ovens will cook those impostors first. Its the niggers we have to deal with today. Obama is a prime example of their disrespect.
That nigger thinks he can be president of a white man’s country. That fucking slave thinks he can dictate to his masters. Is there any wonder that we are buying guns so much. We need to take back our country.
Al, as a white man you will have to decide whether you are with us or against us. When the ovens are turned on again, you march that kite down to one pronto.
Doug stop insulting George. He speaks for the majority of white men. Especially those who feel the way he does but don’t have the balls to speak up. Or who have to be politically correct for financial or political reasons. You really think the average white man believes that the niggers and mud people are his equal? You can’t possibly be that naive.
Intelligent white men, powerful white men, the natural leaders of our race say what needs to be said to keep the peace for now, while they work behind the scenes to keep the white man in charge of his country.
The Georges are the soldiers on the front lines. They remind us all of White Pride. Respect that. They will be the soldiers that start the war to take back our country. Even now they are marching for God to bring His majesty back to our country. “In God We Trust” is what will carry the day for all decent white men.
I realize you have to placate your wife, but you don’t have to go over the top with your criticizing George. White men will one day return to the head of their households. We will put the collars back on our bitches.
Their job is to bear strong white males and fine bitches for motherhood. They were never meant to be occupying equal positions in a white man’s kingdom. That too is the result of the niggers being given parity with their masters.
That is another reason to hate niggers. Their bitches gave our women the idea that they could think with a man about important issues. A man, whether he be nigger or wet back, should not have to listen to a woman unless she is moaning in bed or crying in childbirth.
I may be a Southern boy, but I have an Ivy league education. So I know how my northern brethren think. We have our ideological differences, but we come together on who this country belongs to. America is and shall ALWAYS be a white man’s country.
Al, you, Doug and the rest of the WHITE men who regularly take part in this arena and others, say what it takes to keep the peace for now, but silently and when we can secretly support the Georges of our race. They are our true heros.
God is on our side. He will return to reign again. Until then it is our responsibility to keep America in His corner and the niggers and mud people in check.

Swedish born, Canada-raised Malin Akerman has a thing for the US president. The 31-year-old actress (27 Dresses, Watchmen) talked about her Obama love (lust?) in an interview with Esquire.
“I get sweaty palms when I think about him. He’s so supremely intelligent, and he’s a man. I just want to go in there and become a home wrecker. No, I really don’t.”
I tell her the Internet has pictures of a shirtless Obama vacationing in Hawaii. “I might have to have a little bathroom break. Change my panties.”..
Then she is shown photos:
“Oh, my God. I really need to meet him and mess up his marriage. And mess up mine, too… Have you seen his hands? I’m sorry, but I’m a big hand freak, and those hands could wrap around you twice.”

Guam’s skies are ever changing
One of the main things I try to do with Starry, Starry Night, my radio spots and the University of Guam Planetarium is to help people understand that Guam’s skies are very different from the skies of North America. And even if you were born here and have never left, any sky lore you learned from schoolbooks or other books was the sky lore of North America.
Guam’s skies are very different from North American skies because we’re much closer to the equator here than the stargazers in the mainland U.S. Here on Guam, we see all the stars they see but we also see most of the stars that are forever hidden from a stargazer in Paducah or Poughkeepsie.
There’s another big difference. In North America, there are stars and star patterns that are always in the sky. The reason every schoolchild in North America (and Europe and China and Japan) learns the star groups we call the Big and Little Dippers is because those stars are always in the sky no matter what time of year it is.
That isn’t true on Guam. We’re so close to the equator that we have NO star groups that are always in the sky and that includes the Big and Little Dippers. Don’t believe me?
Go outside tonight and watch one of our astounding sunsets (I know, that’s a hard assignment.) As it begins to grow dark, turn 90 degrees to your right. You’ll be facing north and you’ll see a very familiar figure to your left. Yes, that’s the Big Dipper, but you may not see the bottom star of the bowl. And if you go outside next week and look, you’ll see that more of the Dipper’s stars have vanished. By the end of the month, the bowl will be gone and by the end of next month we’ll no longer see the Big Dipper in our early evening sky at all. So make sure you wave goodbye to an old familiar friend this month. But don’t worry; the Big Dipper will be back next spring!
To find something that will be with us a little while longer, turn completely around and you’ll see a bright group of stars that looks very much like a fishhook. Those are the brightest stars of Scorpius the Scorpion. The bright red star at the top of the fishhook is Antares, the pulsing heart of the Scorpion.

=================================
On the Bill Press Show Thursday morning, Rep. Jim Clyburn (D-S.C.) blasted fellow South Carolina Rep. Joe Wilson (R) for heckling President Obama the previous evening.
Clyburn said Wilson’s written apology was “the cowardly way to do it,” and that the Republican lawmaker “ought to man up” and apologize to the president, his colleagues and the people of South Carolina from the well of the House of Representatives. Clyburn also suggested that Rep. John Boehner (R-Ohio) apologize to the president on behalf of his caucus.
“I don’t think there’s ever been this kind of venom or insult directed at the chief executive of the United States of America when he’s standing in a joint session,” Clyburn said.
As for Wilson himself, Clyburn said, “I share counties with him … these are people who may have political conservatism but they do have good manners, and I do believe that the first sign of a good education is in fact good manners.”
Sen. Arlen Specter (D-Pa.) also appeared on the show and agreed that Wilson’s apology not “adequate,” because apologizing wasn’t punishment enough to discourage such rude antics in the future. Wilson, Specter argued, ought to be censured or rebuked for the outburst. “If you can do that to the president and get away with it, it’s open season,” Specter said.

Maybe Wilson is just doing a little pre-secession war dance! He probably figures that after South Carolina, Alaska, Georgia, Alabama and Texas officially secede from the Union and form their own country he might become Attorney General or even Commandante of the “RedSloMerican Republican Army, Inc!” (This Army would have to be in the private sector, of course, so the government can beat them out of their retirement when the time comes.)

The same people who claim Jesus as their savior don’t want to pay the taxes necessary to save others.
The very folks who shout FREEDOM! are the ones who would prefer you didn’t have a choice here.
Those who promote the glory of war and giving your LIFE TO YOUR COUNTRY do not want to help pay for your healthcare!
“Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country” does not mean:
Ask not for assistance from your countrymen (many of whom claim to be Christians, by the way) but go rot in a corner somewhere.
If you are pro-life, then you better shut up and pay up.
The only liar is the hypocrite who wants American children and families to suffer because of an inability to comprehend a minor point.

How Traders Can Get Better Deductions
Janice M. Johnson, JD, CPA
If you frequently trade stocks or other investments (such as options or commodities) for short-term gain, consider electing “trader” status and making a “mark-to-market” election under Section 475(f) of the Tax Code. This means that your position will be valued at year-end, with any increase over cost taxed at ordinary rates and any decrease being fully deductible against ordinary income. All your gains and losses (realized and unrealized) will be deemed short term. But if you trade for short-term gains anyhow, this makes no difference. Advantages…
Investing expenses will be deductible on Schedule C of your tax return, as opposed to counting them among your miscellaneous expenses, which are deductible only to the extent that they exceed 2% of adjusted gross income.
Schedule C deductions can include a home office and related expenses, such as computing equipment, if this is your principal place of business for your trading activities.
All net investing losses will be deductible against ordinary income — instead of only $3,000 of net capital losses being deductible annually.
You’ll no longer need to keep records of holding periods or to be concerned about the wash-sale rule (which otherwise applies when the same security is sold and repurchased within 30 days).
For flexibility: Conduct your trading through a pass-through entity, such as a family partnership or one-person limited liability company, and you can still invest separately for long-term gains in your personal portfolio.

Anon 15,
I thought I would try to be civil minded and intellectually advanced as Obama was last night against the nations uneducated Repugnicants and thought that I wouldn’t even respond to your idiotic thinking, but…it’s hard since you obviously have low self esteem, lack intelligence to think through all of your religious rhetoric and Catechesis, and feel empowered through lies rather than truths. But, here we are in the same country with the same problems, but only one of us gives a shit about others…in case you don’t know, that would be the NON church going guy…
There is an excerpt from the movie screenplay “Be Cool” which I have tweaked a little in order to make it work for Joe Wilson, but we can make it work here for you too…
Taken from the script of the movie “Be Cool”. (My apologies, for the slight editing used only for effect and context, go out to Michael Arick, the writer/director of “Be Cool”.)
In response to his unprofessional, uncivilized and unwarranted and rude behavior toward the President of the United States in Obama’s Address to Congress on Health Care.
Yo, Joe! (or Anon 15, George, et al)
Have you lost your mind? I mean, how is it that you can disrespect a man’s ethnicity (everyone knows that’s what it’s about) when you know the African American community has influenced nearly every facet of white America, from our music to our style of dress, not to mention our basic imitation of their sense of cool…walk, talk, dress, mannerisms. They help to enrich our very existence, all the while contributing to the gross national product through achievements in corporate America.
It’s these conceits that comfort me when I’m faced with the ignorant, cowardly, bitter and bigoted who have no talent, no guts, people like you who desecrate things they don’t understand when the truth is you should say, “Thank you, man,” and go on about your way. But apparently, you’re incapable of doing that.
I can’t believe in your god if he teaches shits like you to act like you do. But, continue to go to church on Sunday if it helps you, otherwise I suggest you take some medicine for you ailments. George might have some, since he doesn’t take his…
I’m glad you’re not my neighbor or I would have to give a shit about you…god said…

Hey George, it is obvious you used an alias today on the blog. Why, are you tired of being told what a hoarse’s ass you really are. Tonight you call yourself a heroe for spreading hatred.
You still haven’t learned how to spell ‘Kike’ (not Kite) you idiot.
your type cannot hide behind an alias. You are to inbred and stupid to remember that you can be recognized from your comment.
I hear there’s gonna be a KKK cross burning tonight in your area, you commin’ to pray to your lord Jesus, the Jew.
You don’t have to be afraid to let the world know YOU ARE GEORGE, and not someone praising him for his bravery, you coward.

I know the term kike, I purposely used kite rather than kike to make the point that it does not matter whether they hide out among our race. We will ferret them out.
You obviously did not get the implication. You are not as smart as you think you are. The Georges of the world are proud of their White heritage.
It is you who hides because you are afraid to allow your white skin to occupy the place God gave it.
It matters not what these jews call themselves. We will finish Hitler’s dream. The Thousand Year Reign will yet occur.
You will either be with us or against us. America assumed the mantle of leadership via the Mormon Church.
God came here to Utah to establish this blessed nation as His own. The Moron faith has slowly risen to be the dominant religion in America. It will provide the sword to smite the beasts.
There will be no mercy. God has commanded us to exterminate those not part of His covenant. All God fearing white men will obey His call.
All God fearing white women will also obey by honoring the leadership of their man and obeying his every command. She will bear him god fearing fearless sons.
Read the Mormon bible. When Jesus came to America He was a White man. He appeared only to white men. He commanded us to take many wives and to procreate. Only white men are the true children of Jesus. This is the foundation of the Mormon Church.
It has only been recently that we have let the niggers and mud people join. That does not mean that they get a free pass from the ovens. They will be the kindling for the final blaze that will consume the beasts.
God is our Savior.

Cholesterol’s early link to dementia
Here’s more evidence of how what you do to your body now can haunt you for the rest of your life.
New research shows that high cholesterol levels in your middle ages can increase your risk for Alzheimer’s disease 30 years down the road.
A study published in August in Dementia and Geriatric Cognitive Disorders looked at the cholesterol levels of nearly 10,000 men and women recorded between 1964 and 1973, when they were all in their early to mid 40s.
Then, checking the health histories of these patients between 1997 and 2007, they found that those who had elevated cholesterol levels earlier were 57 percent more likely to have Alzheimer’s disease.
Not only that, but they even found that patients who had borderline high levels of cholesterol at midlife were 50 percent more likely to suffer from vascular dementia in their senior years.
Now, you can almost hear the minds of the Big Pharma suits at work right now. They’re already trying to think of ways to get more people on their needless statins, those drugs that lower cholesterol levels and come with some pretty nasty side effects.
They won’t rest until we’re all taking these meds, but you don’t need them — cholesterol levels most of the time can be lowered easily and effectively through lifestyle changes. Studies have even shown that lowering those levels through statins won’t lower your Alzheimer’s risk.
If you want that benefit, you’re going to have to do it the right way.
For some people, elevated cholesterol is part of a larger problem caused by your hormones. I wrote all about this poorly understood condition, called metabolic syndrome, in the June and July issues of Health Revelations.
Fortunately, there are some safe, simple and natural changes you can make that will restore your body — and your cholesterol levels — to health, and if you subscribe now you can read all about it in the online archives.
My plan won’t just help you with your cholesterol levels. It will help you to lose weight, lower your risk for diabetes and lower your blood pressure too. You certainly won’t hear about this from your own doctor — he’ll just give you a prescription for each of the symptoms.
You can also lower your risk for dementia in other completely natural ways, by simply keeping yourself sharp later in life.
As I’ve mentioned before, one of the best ways to keep dementia at bay is with exercise — exercise for your mind.
One new study offers yet more evidence of how important it is to treat your mind like any other muscle and give it a good daily workout.
The study, published in August in Neurology, found a direct connection between mentally stimulating activity and the onset of Alzheimer’s. In fact, the researchers found that each day per week spent doing things like crossword puzzles, playing music or participating in group discussions delayed dementia by around two months.
So a senior who makes sure he or she does something challenging or stimulating every day of the week can delay Alzheimer’s by 14 months.
That’s more than a full year of good living when you need it most, and the only price you pay is having a little fun every day.
