Flap Your Lips Friday
Posted by Michelle Moquin on September 11th, 2009
Good morning.
It seems many of you have started flapping early :)
Al: You seem to have acquired the #1 spot lately. I remember a time when ZL and Doug fought for that spot. :) Tell me, where did you find this series that you are posting? They’re short, to the point, and interesting. Thanks for sharing. I look forward to the others.
Ruth: Good to hear from you again. “…the shout-out was spontaneous.” Ah yes, true feelings have a propensity to be that way.
Anonymous #4: Is that you Paul Begala from CNN on the Huff, or someone just plagiarizing you word for word? Just curious.
Zen Lill: Love that on the floor energy stretch! Feels good. I was once told when I was very young to hold my stomach in, and to this day it has always kept my tummy flat and tight. And then I discovered Pilates. Holding your belly button down towards your spine like you suggested in your energy stretch, is the base meaning of Pilates, which I love doing. Ana Caban is my fave teacher.
Delany: I’m still for the public option and a single payer option is still my fave.
Anon #15: What is not clear to me is how white women could possibly be attracted to you when you speak so derogatory about them.
Women: Yes, you know who you are…the ones who love men like anon#15 and George….I’m speaking to you. How does it feel when they speak about preventing you from ‘aborting our little white babies’ and ‘putting the collars back on our bitches’? How can you live with men who say that they ‘should not have to listen to a woman unless she is moaning in bed or crying in childbirth’? Something is terribly wrong here. Wake up – your mind is not your own. And you’re not honoring the woman that you are, nor women in general. Get a back bone.
Yo Doug and Anon 16: You guys go – lay it on good.
Linsay: So you want to be a GirlZ huh? In answer to your question: ‘Of course.’ :) Hafa Adai.
Girls: I admit, I have a crush on our President too, but that’s as far as it goes for me – He is taken….and come to think about it, so am I. :)
Carol: Coming up with something to write every day is a challenge and thankfully I have sources to help. But you have a masters in creative writing – wonderful. What are you working on?
In regards to your kind offer – thank you. I had thought at one time I would have guest writers, maybe once a month, but never got around to putting it together. If you want to send me something, by all means do. I just can’t guarantee I will get it. It seems I don’t have much control over this venue, my e-mail or snail mail.
Alexander: A few of us are itching for more.
On another note….
9/11. Will that date ever mean anything different other than what it means today? At 6 am this morning it didn’t dawn on me, until I tuned into the Huff and was reminded by the photo of the burning twin towers. I will never forget that day as I am sure no American will.
We came back from Burning Man, still high on the love, laughter, and carefree living and playing on the playa, only to wake up on 9/11 to a day that will forever be other than ordinary.
9/11 is now declared a National Day of Service.
“Instead of us simply remembering the horrible events and more importantly the heroes who lost their lives on 9/11, we are all going to turn into local heroes,” said Ted Tenenbaum, a Los Angeles repair shop owner who offered free handyman services Thursday and planned to do so again Friday.
Suzanne Ma – The Huffington Post
Hmm…I’m not sure that I would consider being of service as heroic, but I like the idea of making 9/11 a national day of service and doing something for someone else just out of the kindness of one’s heart. So I ask, “What will you do today to be of service?”
Peace out….
Gratefully your blog host,

Michelle:
I have never written in before but you are on the verge of eternal damnation. God demands that we honor and obey our men. They have their faults but they are made in our Lord’s interest. We are commanded by the Bible to obey our men.
You need to find a Bible and form a relationship with your Lord, Jesus Christ. God says man is the head of the household.
Do not castigate those of us who practice what the Bible demands of us in the name of the Lord. He is your Lord as well as mine.
Get behind your mind and Jesus will reward you in Heaven. Obedience is not a burden when it is done in the name of the Lord.

Improve Your Speaking Style
Jerry Weissman
hough it may seem that President Barack Obama is a born public speaker, his talents are rooted in a set of techniques that anyone can learn…
Connect with individuals. President Obama looks directly at one person in the audience while delivering each phrase. He shifts his gaze from person to person only between sentences or ideas. This gives the president time to form connections with audience members. He never “sweeps the crowd” with his eyes in an attempt to look at everyone. Facial expressions tend to appear insincere when we are not focused on another face. Also…
He frequently uses the word “you.” When a speaker says “you,” listeners feel that the speaker is speaking directly to them.
He opens with topics that resonate with his audience. Only when the president sees heads nodding in agreement does he move on to more controversial matters.
He learns the names of well-known locals and sprinkles them into his speeches. This creates the sense that the president and audience members have common acquaintances, forming a personal connection.
He mentions items from that day’s local news. This helps his presentations feel current — even if he has delivered the speech many times.
Vocally punctuate phrases. President Obama’s words don’t drag on in long streams. He divides his speeches into phrases, each of which conveys a single complete idea. He drops the pitch of his voice at the end of each of these phrases and pauses before starting the next one.
Why speak this way? The varied tone and pace hold listeners’ attention. Lowering the pitch at the end of each phrase sounds confident. Pauses between phrases give listeners time to absorb the message. They also give the president time to breathe so that he never sounds rushed or winded and rarely resorts to “ummm” or “ahhh” fillers.
Restrain your body language. The president has excellent posture when he speaks. His back is straight, his shoulders are back and square. This makes him appear poised and confident. His hands move when he speaks, but they rarely move beyond the edges of his lectern. Speaking with no hand movement looks stiff and unnatural, but wide gestures can make a speaker seem overwrought.
Use narrative techniques. These include…
Antithesis. Contrasting ideas are juxtaposed using a similar structure. Example: “There is not a liberal America and a conservative America — there is the United States of America.”
Alliteration. Two or more words with the same first letter are used in rapid succession. Example: Note the recurring “p” sounds in “Do we participate in a politics of cynicism or do we participate in a politics of hope?”
Anaphora. A word or phrase is repeated several times. Example: “Tonight, if you feel the same energy that I do, if you feel the same urgency that I do, if you feel the same passion that I do, if you feel the same hopefulness that I do… then I have no doubt… the people will rise up in November.”
Anecdotes. Stories about real people are used to establish larger points. Example: President Obama didn’t just present his opinions about the Iraq war in his keynote speech at the 2004 Democratic National Convention — he told the story of a Marine named Shamus.
Bottom Line/Personal interviewed Jerry Weissman, a presentation coach based in Burlingame, California, whose clients include Yahoo! and Cisco Systems. He is author of The Power Presenter (Wiley). http://www.powerltd.com.

Hi Michelle,
Let me assure you that I am not competing for any position, nor do I want one. Glad that you and hopefully your readers are enjoying what I am posting.
I found them on-line and they reflect my thoughts, and I agree with that which is new to me.
This one is called
“Two Faces, One Card”
The United States government is often referred to as a two party system. This very statement highlights one of the biggest issues in U.S. politics. There are far more than two parties involved in any election, be it sate or federal, however only the Democrats and Republicans manage to get a representative in office regularly. Both parties receive inordinate sums of money from private individuals and corporations that serve to fund their massive nationwide ad campaigns. Without such funding the lesser parties cannot hope to attain the voting base needed to appear in televised debates, let alone win a national election. While this in itself is highly undemocratic, it pales in comparison to the transgressions of the two great parties perpetrated for their own benefit from their corporate sponsors. In order to garner the favor of the large corporations, both parties must maintain a pro-capitalist, pro-corporate, pro-rich stance on politics. It is absolutely vital that they not lose favor with the richest segment of society in order for them to maintain their hegemony. While one of them may lose come election time, the other is guaranteed to win, keeping the rich minority in control of our nation. One leans slightly left, the other slightly right, but both have the same core of business friendly policies and corporate aid. We are not of the people, for the people; we are of the wealthy for themselves. One nation, under the dollar.

HI Mischa, love that ‘flap your lips Friday’ thing : ) re: your comment, I did practice Pilates (mat and reformer machine) along with regular workout stuff for 10+ years so the lifestyle shift brings in the best of all that knowledge, I love that stretch also, I’m all about the white light energy flowing outward.
Dorris, I feel for you, you’ve been a bit brain washed…the bible was not in written form for many moons, it was a verbal story told to another as told to another as told to another, and as a book of symbolism, it’s honorable enough, I suppose. But – as a way to control women (and have them accept it as you do)is KEY, bc as I mentioned it’s a book of stories passed along and mostly by men to other men – if you would like to turn over your life to Jesus, great, if you would like to turn over your life to your man, well – who am I to judge? Do as you like. You won’t hear me say ‘great’ though. I hope for your sake you’ve got a nice ‘god-fearing’ man – though many of the ‘rules’ of the good book are overlooked by men, how very convenient : )
Listen, men and women have their inherent strengths and weaknesses but for one to have domain over the other as ‘ruler’ or ‘head of (anything)’ is pretty ludicrous. In any healthy relationship the strength/power flows back and forth depending on the task/situation at hand. To always acquiesce to a man who may or may not know wtf he’s doing is not something I’d ever sign up for – and you should rethink it, too. Why on earth should one party have decision making precedence over another (unless you are mentally impaired, which, um, I won’t rule out, though no judging going on over here…)…that’s my two, Dorris, I probably should’ve let Mischa have first come back on that topic but I just cannot sit back when a woman speaks of Jesus/men that way. I’m sure this is offensive to your sensibilities so I’ll say I’m sorry – hmm, though, reread what I said and rethink your stance, please?
Women of MM blog, so how do you like the Pilates stretch?
Today I’m adding this: Do that Pilates stretch, make sure you’re legs/toes and arms/fingertips are fully engaged in shooting out that white light energy to opposite walls, visualize it as sending goodness out into the world : ) hold in that tummy and visualize that belly button touching your spine, squeeze that butt and hold for 60 seconds, then out the door for that walk to the store (if you need more fruit/veggies/fish-chicken) for 15 minutes, on the return, stop at a curb, let your heels hang off the curb with your toes securely on the curb and lift up on your toes tiptoe style and hold for a count of 3, slowly drop them down to have your heels well below the curb and hold for a count of 3, do it 10x’s, you should feel this in your calves – remeber to do it slowly and squeeze the s**t out of that G in your crack while your at it : )
That’s the physical part, since I often take Sat/Sun to read but not comment bc I’m trying to have some fun in life : ) I’m going to give you your weekend ‘homework’ – SATURDAY: Look in the mirror for 2 full minutes (you’re lucky this Sat is with clothes on, next week…oh let’s just stay in the moment, shall we?) and after 2 full minutes I want you to say out loud 3 things you like about your face (ex. I have nice straight teeth or I love my color eyes, etc…keep it easy and simple) – it’s a segue into appreciating your own looks, not the ideal of the media or anyone else either, this is you loving you. Oh and eat those 10 dark chocolate covered almonds, yes! SUNDAY: Think about foods you love that are good for you, if you have no appreciation for vegetables, try one you’ve never tried before, a green and leafy, spinach uncooked with olive oil and Bragg’s amino acids is one of the best plain salads there is, add some strawberries and watch what happens, it’s a meal and desert, so good…buy a small notebook bc Monday we’re going to start jotting down what we eat and when, I can hear the groaning but if you just do this for one week you’ll see it’s value, you’ll see exactly when you’re slipping in a processed sugar treat or a Coke, etc…and it’s not the calories that I’m conce3rned with, it’s the way sugar metabolizes and affects you/your moods I’m wanting you to look at later…hint: we’ll be altering states without using food as a crutch (but I’m getting ahead of myself bc I’m so excited for all of you!)…so I’ll end it now.
Anon 16/George, sigh…wtf is wrong with you? Seriously, you need a psychiatric evaluation, dude. Doug and Al said all the rest, thanks to da boyZ for that bc I’d have gone off on you!
I think that’s it…have a great weekend, Zen Lill
September 11th, 2009 at 3:02 pm
Btw, there’s a great article on salon.com about Repugs and healthcare, bottomline: they only want federal funds spent when it’s something they suffer from i.e Cindy McCain and mils for migraine research, etc…if it affects them then it’s worthy, if it affects you, too bad. Can you say self-centered?! – ZL

Lindsay, sorry I forgot, thanks for the stargazing info about Guam. What’s the best time of year to visit?

Hi Howie and Al, hope this short weekend is a better one for you both.

Hi Zenn Lill,
I thought that last weekend was a day longer??? You know that since Obama has been President, the Georges and the anon.#15 are popping out of the woodwork.
WTF did all these bigoted people come from? They will not even allow the President to run the country. Why are there so many bigots afraid to have a black man be president?
He could do so much good if racism wasn’t a BIG part of the equation.
It’s hard to fathom how much hate is spewing, when the country should be coming together. We got a lot of problems the last administrations left us, bigotry should not be hindering the progress of the entire nation.
There are a lot more racists out there than I ever thought possible, their ideology is ridiculous.

September 11th, 2009 at 9:58 pm
Hi Al-a-mode’ – this weekend is only Sat/Sun and not a holiday that moves slow like last Monday : )
You said it above, and I was thinking about it today, I mean, I knew racism/ists and acts of racism occur daily, but this type of hatred and separation, this type of racism/bigotry (mud people? kites? etc…) has it just been lurking and seething under the surface of my personal radar detector? I’m usually pretty good at determining who’s a sexist : ) that’s not hard, racists either – they speak pretty exclusionary talk. Maybe it’s that this is a blog and you can call a Jewish person a kite/non-white/whatever and an OTW whatever derogatory name you want to, is that it? I’m bummed that Obama can’t be as efficient in his service as he’d like to bc of all of it. Fyi, he’s an attractive and articulate man and the hands, yeah the hands…but overall physically I must say, just not my type, not thick enough through the shoulder for me, I prefer beefcake, hahaha…and a man who is unattached is probably a better option, why complicate things?
Thanks for asking after my kid, she’s sleeping off a fever now, she’ll probably be her usual chatty self manana so i’m going to enjoy the quiet while it lasts : )
G’night, Zen Lill

A CONSUMER GUIDE TO HIP REPLACEMENTS
A hip replacement operation can be a godsend for the thousands of people each year who have been living in pain from arthritis or other hip problems. Key to the long-term success of the operation is the choice of which type of replacement hip is used, since materials have different advantages for different types of people… and unfortunately, as Douglas E. Padgett, MD, chief of the Adult Reconstruction and Joint Replacement Division and an associate clinical investigator at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York told me, none of the choices are perfect. “What’s best is human cartilage on human cartilage — everything else is second best,” he said. Given that, what factors influence which kind of joint is used on you? And, what are the risks involved with each option? I spoke with Dr. Padgett about it…
HOW HIP JOINTS WORK
Just like a natural hip, an artificial hip joint is composed of a ball (highly polished metal or ceramic) and a socket (a durable cup of metal, plastic or ceramic, sometimes with an outer metal shell). However, the bones of natural hip joints are sheathed with cartilage that enables them to glide smoothly, whereas in artificial ones the friction is literally hundreds of times greater. As a result, they may wear out in 15 to 20 years depending on how active the patient is and which materials are used. Of greater concern is what’s known as “wear debris” — particles that get released when the surfaces rub together, causing inflammation, scar tissue and degradation of surrounding tissue. This can result in the need for additional surgery or even a “redo” hip replacement.
Since all materials have their pros and cons, it makes sense to know as much as you can about the different kinds of implants so you can participate with your surgeon in deciding which is right for you. Factors that affect the decision include age, gender, activity level and the extent of damage to your natural hip.
Dr. Padgett reviewed with me the options currently available. There are advantages and disadvantages to each type of bearing. “I use all of them for different reasons, for different types of patients,” he said.
Metal or ceramic ball on polyethylene liner bearings. In this type of coupling, a polyethylene cup is mated with either metallic (cobalt chromium) or a ceramic (alumina or zirconia) head. “Polyethylene is a medical-grade plastic, much like the material used to make cutting boards,” explained Dr. Padgett. “Early versions of polyethylene bearings were highly susceptible to wear, but recent technology has improved its durability. Polyethylene bearings are well tolerated in the body and they almost never fracture.” Unfortunately, with wear these bearings erode and they may potentially shed polyethylene debris. The resulting inflammatory response around the bone may lead to resorption (osteolysis) or destruction of bone… and may be associated with implant loosening or even bone fracture.
Dr. Padgett says: “I use metal or ceramic on polyethylene bearings for older adults in their 70s and 80s, whose activities are somewhat less demanding — this type of coupling should last them for the rest of their lives.” For younger, more active people, including those who engage in high-impact sports, he uses metal on polyethylene, noting “the newer polyethylene is more forgiving and less likely to lead to catastrophic failure.”
Metal on metal bearings. Made of cobalt chromium, metal bearings are “highly polished surfaces associated with low friction and low wear rates,” said Dr. Padgett. However, he cautions, there may be problems associated with metal bearings. “At the end of the day, it’s still metal in your body, even though new technology has helped reduce the problem by decreasing impurities and improving the hardness and smoothness of the metal bearings.”
Also, he noted that some individuals develop a hypersensitivity to the metal, with an abnormal reaction leading to pain, loosening of the joint or implant failure. “There have been several reported cases of metal hypersensitivity leading to bone resorption and soft tissue injury,” he said, adding that for anyone, leaving metal in the body for a long time may lead to other problems, including long-term concerns about kidney or liver toxicity that may cause disease or even be possibly carcinogenic.
Active people are at greatest risk for having their hip replacement wear out, with some data showing greater metal ion release with greater activity. However, this type of implant has potential for long-term function. Dr. Padgett uses these implants on young males, but not patients with known kidney or liver disease and not females of childbearing age, due to concerns that the ions have the potential to penetrate the placental barrier and affect a fetus.
Ceramic bearings. Ceramics are composed of metal and non-metal compounds. “Ceramic surfaces are smooth and wettable, and will hold lubrication — factors which dramatically reduce wear rates for these bearings,” said Dr. Padgett.
However, as with the other bearings, ceramics have some inherent problems — most significant is that they are brittle, and therefore vulnerable to chipping, cracking and breaking. When this became apparent after numerous adverse incidents in the 80s and 90s, surgeons abandoned ceramics in favor of other bearings, Dr. Padgett told me, adding that “improvements in the materials have made this rare, but not unheard of, today.”
Lately there have been reports that some ceramic hips squeak audibly as patients go about their lives. Possible causes include a lack of lubrication of the joint by the body or the deposition of metal debris on the ceramic surface. Orthopedists have had a mixed response to this — some are unconcerned, but Dr. Padgett calls it worrisome. “If you are squeaking I would be concerned that you either have non-lubricated surfaces rubbing against one another, or some abnormality of the ceramic surface which could cause some damage to the bearing,” he said.
Dr. Padgett says: “I use a ceramic on ceramic hip for patients who remain active but aren’t involved in repetitive high-impact activities.” “Patients in their 50s who want to remain actively engaged in less rigorous, low-impact sports such as golf are typically a good fit for this type of implant.”
HIP FORECAST
Unfortunately, all bearings (metal, ceramic, polyethylene) have the potential to cause wear debris and elicit an inflammatory response. Scientists continue to work on developing new materials for artificial hips that promise longer wear and fewer potential problems. Possibilities include different types of metallurgy, such as diamond. “Highly compressed carbon would be very hard, very smooth and shatterproof,” explained Dr. Padgett. For more information on hip replacement, go to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Web site at http://www.aaos.org... or the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons at http://www.aahks.org.

It seems that racism and bigotry pays. I got this from MoveOn.org.
—————————————————-
Yesterday, ignoring the calls from leaders within his own party, Rep. Joe Wilson refused to apologize on the House floor for shouting out “you lie!” during President Obama’s big health care speech.1
In fact, he recorded a new YouTube video defending his attacks on Obama’s health care plan and requesting donations for his re-election campaign!2
This is the kind of disrespectful and dishonest behavior we’ve come to expect from right-wing mobs and talk radio hosts recently—but it’s simply unacceptable for a member of the United States Congress.
Fortunately, we’ve got a great opportunity to replace Joe Wilson in Congress. Rob Miller is a Democrat and an Iraq war veteran, and last year he won 46% of the vote against Wilson despite raising half as much money.
Grassroots progressives are teaming up to help Rob Miller take on Joe Wilson, raising over $750,000 in less than two days. They’ve set a goal of raising of $1 million.

It seems that there are plenty of fellow racists and bigots out there and they are willing to support anyone who will dare to speak aloud what they are thinking.

Anna, hafa adai.
My boyfriend who works for the airforce on Guam said that they were tracking an alien ship that was using the storm to cover their entry in Guam’s space. He told me to gather all the candles I could and spare food stuff because the military believes that if the storm won’t cover their pass through, they believed that the aliens would cause a island black out.
Good luck.

That was late. We already have the black out.
————————————————
Not even seven minutes after the storm watch was declared for Guam, the island experienced an islandwide power outage. According to Guam Power Authority spokesperson Art Perez says they were able to restore areas near the Guam Memorial Hospital, different parts of Nimitz Hill, Cabras Island, the Ipan area of Talofofo, and parts of Tamuning, Dededo and Yigo.
He says the utility agency projects for most areas to be up before midnight tonight. He said for consumers who continue to be without power, “If they’re going to run their generators, please shut off the main breakers and make sure your generators are well ventilated at this point and as I receive updates from my dispatchers, I’ll provide that information.”
Perez couldn’t pinpoint the cause of the outages, only saying GPA received reports of lightning strikes. He says once full restoration is made throughout the island, they will be able to determine the cause of the outages.
In the meantime, if you’re having any problems with your power, call dispatchers at 475-1472/3/ or 4.

What’s with you people? I gave a donation to Rep Wilson. You probably gave one to Miller. MoveOn.org is using what Rep. Wilson said to build up a huge war chest to be used against him.
I happen to be a supporter of Rep. Wilson. I will give more if he needs it. You liberals kill me complaining about us doing the exact same thing you are doing.

I answered Rep Wilson’s call for financial support because I am not in his state and cannot support him at the polls. I am not a racist or a bigot. I support free speech. He was exercising his free speech when he told the nigger he was lying.
Any person who risks the pressures of his peers to exercise his speech rights, is speaking for all of us and deserves our support.

My post would not take. What did I do wrong, Michelle?
September 12th, 2009 at 1:53 pm
Hi Michelle,
Are you gonna post today? Maybe you are having some technical problems. Hope all is well.
I am sorry you feel I snatched or acquired a position on your blog, this was not my intention.
“Media Money”
In our society, a person’s worldview is increasingly based upon events that were not physically experienced but dictated to him or her by the various media. Though the media is an effective tool for communication, one must remember its actual purpose. A television news program, like any other television program in this capitalist system, exists to make a profit. It makes this profit by selling advertising time and it sells advertising time by getting high ratings. It is not designed to simply tell you the news, but to tell you the news in a way that will keep you from changing the channel. The same applies to radio news programs, while newspapers are written to sell the newspaper itself. They are all designed to tell the news, but more importantly they are designed to tell the news in a manner that will generate a profit. To some this may seem like a minor distinction, but this difference determines which news stories are covered, the amount and visibility of coverage, and the manner in which they are editorialized. A society that accepts this edited information as the whole and unbiased truth subscribes to a worldview based upon popular opinion rather than fact and subjects itself to the will of the information providers. Without objective sources of information our society cannot make informed decisions concerning world events, or homeland politics. Such a state puts us in grave danger in this time of international power struggles and global corporations.
