Good morning!

I just love when one link takes me to another and another and another and I end up finding something really cool.

I like this site and what they’re doing.

Their tagline is “We all believe in a gender equal world. Obviously,” with a side bar saying “Duh.”

But more than 500 million girls and women will be denied the opportunity to take part in the next generation’s development.

This doesn’t have to be the reality.

Organizations working for girls and women currently raise less than half the average amount raised by other nonprofits and charities.

Catapult can change that.

We’re combining the financial power and actions of people like you to help tackle gender inequality around the world.

I am not sure all believe in a gender equal world. In fact I am pretty sure that there are some people (men mostly) that don’t believe in a gender equal world which is why we aren’t a gender equal world. Obviously. (duh.)

But hey, I still like their optimism and of course I love that they’re doing something!

Where I would put that “Duh” though is in their secondary page where it asks the question, “Why girls and women?”

And their answer:

Because equality for girls and women makes a better planet for everyone.

(“Duh!”)

To some people — it’s about rights. To others — it’s about smart economics. Either way — we cannot see progress in our world without addressing gender equality.

There are so many organizations already doing brilliant work for girls and women. They have the expertise, the cultural understanding, and they’ve scoped solutions for big changes. They just need funding.

Any woman who start an organization to help women and girls are Wonderful Women of the World in my book. Kudos to the founders, Maz Kessler and Jill Sheffield, of Women Deliver 2011.

Healthcare and more specifically, the continued to effort to take down Obamacare, is still in the news. Get over it repubs. The ACA is here to stay. Can we move onto something that propels us forward instead of trying to throw us back? Oh right, you love the “good ‘ol days” – the days of  ”what’s good for me and mine.” There is rarely the touted “I want what’s best for the country.” (LSOS speak)  It is usually “We will do whatever we need to do, to bring Obama down in any way we can.”

And that means convincing repubs to shut down the government in a ploy to defund the Affordable Care Act. Here’s A write from Think Progress:

Conservatives Finally Announce Alternative To Obamacare: Just Go To The Emergency Room

Heritage president and former South Carolina senator Jim DeMint continued his campaign to convince Republicans to shut down the government in a ploy to defund the Affordable Care Act on Wednesday, telling a town hall in Tampa, Florida that “This might be that last off-ramp to stop Obamacare before it becomes more enmeshed in our culture.” The law “is not about getting better health care,” he continued. Uninsured Americans “will get better health care just going to the emergency room.”

The claim may be a standard line for today’s Republicans, but it is a stark departure for DeMint and the think tank he now leads. In 1989, the Heritage Foundation was at the forefront of advocating for a requirement to purchase coverage through as system of regulated health care marketplaces, the very centerpiece of Obama’s health care reform, and later lobbied Congressional Republicans to offer the initiative as an alternative to President Bill Clinton’s health proposal.

More than a decade later, Heritage boosted former Gov. Mitt Romney’s (R-MA) health reform law and the individual mandate included in it, describing the requirement as “one that is clearly consistent with conservative values.” A Heritage health care analyst said Romney’s proposal would reform the state’s “uncompensated-care payment system,” force residents to take “personal responsibility” for their health care and prevent them from simply showing up “in emergency rooms.”

Indeed, DeMint himself backed the effort when he endorsed Romney for president in 2008.

“That’s something that I think we should do for the whole country,” DeMint told Fox News. “And the governor just looked at the numbers like a good businessman and realized that we could give people private insurance policies cheaper than we could provide free health care.”

The so-called “free” care at emergency rooms is a result of The Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act or (EMTALA), which requires hospitals that accept Medicare or Medicaid funding to treat patients for emergency medical conditions regardless of legal status or ability to pay. But EMTALA only applies to medical emergencies like heart attacks or serious injury. It does not offer any treatment for chronic conditions, leaving the millions of Americans with diabetes who need regular access to medication to stay alive, or asthma patients, or women diagnosed with breast cancer without access to care.

Studies also show that not all emergency room patients have equal outcomes. The uninsured who suffer “traumatic injuries, such as car crashes, falls and gunshot wounds, were almost twice as likely to die in the hospital as similarly injured patients with health insurance.”

Readers: So there you have it – As usual repubs had similar ideas of legislation. That is until it became too much like the legislation Obama was promoting. Then no…it was no longer a good idea.  Who cares if people without health insurance are almost twice as likely to die in emergency rooms. “As long as I can afford it and me and mine are covered – I don’t care if ACA helps keep people alive – we don’t need it.”

And that is the sick truth the repubs won’t say to you, but will certainly show you with their actions.

Ohio man who held 3 women captive hangs himself

The Cleveland man serving a life sentence for holding three women captive in his home for a decade hanged himself in his prison cell, officials said Wednesday in another startling twist in the case that appalled and transfixed the city.

Ariel Castro, 53, was found hanging around 9:20 p.m. Tuesday at the state prison in Orient, said JoEllen Smith, a spokeswoman for the corrections system. Prison medical staff performed CPR before Castro was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

“He took the coward’s way out,” said Elsie Cintron, a neighbor who lived up the street from the former school bus driver in Cleveland. “We’re sad to hear that he’s dead, but at the same time, we’re happy he’s gone, and now we know he can’t ask for an appeal or try for one if he’s acting like he’s crazy.”

There was no immediate comment from his three victims.

Castro was sentenced Aug. 1 to life in prison plus 1,000 years after he pleaded to 937 counts, including kidnapping and rape, in a deal to avoid the death penalty. At his sentencing, he told the judge: “I’m not a monster. I’m sick.”

Castro had been in protective custody because of the notoriety of his case, meaning he was checked every 30 minutes, but was not on suicide watch, which entails constant supervision, Smith said.

An autopsy showed the death was suicide by hanging, said Dr. Jan Gorniak, Franklin County coroner. Gorniak would not comment on the circumstances in which Castro was found.

The three women — Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight — disappeared separately between 2002 and 2004, when they were 14, 16 and 20 years old. They were rescued from Castro’s home on May 6 when Berry broke out part of screen door and yelled to neighbors for help.

Elation over the women’s rescue soon turned to shock as details emerged about their captivity. Castro fathered a child with Berry while she was being held. The girl was 6 when she was freed.

Investigators also said the women were bound with chains, repeatedly raped and deprived of food and bathroom facilities. Knight told investigators she was beaten and starved to force her to miscarry over and over.

No one answered the door Wednesday morning at the home of Castro’s mother and brother.

In Castro’s old neighborhood, Jessica Burchett said his suicide had short-circuited the life sentence.

“It does give a little bit of closure to the families and people that got affected by what he did,” she said, “but at the same time he deserved to be in there for his life because of what he did to those girls.”

At the home of Berry’s sister, a woman who didn’t identify herself said from the porch that there would be no comment. An officer in a passing patrol car kept watch on the street.

Wearing their familiar red berets, members of the Guardian Angels volunteer patrol group stationed themselves outside DeJesus’ home and said her family didn’t want to be bothered as the community absorbed the news.

Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson said in a statement: “I ask the community to continue to respect the privacy of the survivors so that they can move forward with their lives.”

Messages left for the women’s lawyers were not immediately returned.

Castro was watched closely in the Cuyahoga County Jail in the several weeks after his arrest and before his guilty plea, with logs noting his activity every 10 minutes. He was taken off the suicide watch in June after authorities determined he was not a suicide risk.

Castro’s attorneys tried unsuccessfully to have a psychological examination of Castro done at the jail before he was turned over to state authorities following his guilty plea, his attorney, Jaye Schlachet, said Wednesday. Schlachet would not comment further.

In an interview last month, Schlachet and attorney Craig Weintraub said that their client clearly fit the profile of someone with sociopathic disorder and that they hoped researchers would study him for clues that could be used to stop other predators.

Good morning!

Girls: Do you know what’s in your make-up? I know most of us love make-up, whether we wear a lot or a little. But do we really know what we’re putting on our faces? I do and I HOPE you do too, because most of the ingredients in the popular brands are toxic.

I like to wear as little make-up as possible just because I feel more comfortable with less. And, when I do wear make-up, I make sure that I am putting the least amount, if any, of those toxic ingredients on my face.

Although I am in the fashion business, you can laugh at me, but I don’t go for the designer make-up with the expen$$ive price tag. I get my thrills shopping at Whole Foods or other natural food stores for the makeup that is the least damaging to my skin. Dr. Hauschka is one of my faves – I love it.
