The Great White: Profit or Protection; which one will prosper?

Posted by michellemoquin on 10th August 2008

Well, I tried to find some info about the Great White Sharks thanks to Mildred and Julie’s suggestion, but there really wasn’t much out there. The reason is because  scientists don’t know much about them. They’ve never been seen mating, or giving birth. That in itself is pretty strange.  We seem to have no problem  catching almost any living creature during ‘the act’  but not the Great White. People get glimpses of Great Whites, but they are difficult to track, and even harder to observe underwater; their speed and agility keep them pretty stellar and under the radar so to speak.

And if they are captured and held in captivity, they are not there for long. The Great White does not like to be held prisoner and will not only refuse to eat, but they will inflict damage on themselves by bumping into whatever is in their way. If they aren’t released when this happens, they are likely to die. A slight imperfection in the tank can make them disoriented which would increase their desire to self inflict damage or become more aggressive.  Hmm…Do you blame them? Sharks are predators. It is their natural state of being.  I can imagine why one would go insane in captivity. No one wants to be held against their will – why would Sharks or any other species feel differently? Thankfully, there have only been a few held in captivity and according to what I have read, when they show signs of stress they are usually released.

  • It is reported  that of of all the species on the planet, The Great White shark has undoubtedly achieved a level of evolutionary perfection:  It has remained unchanged for 400 million years.’
  • However, Great White Sharks are a top predator in the sea, and if they disappear, the entire underwater ecosystem will be affected.  And with the shark populations reduced by 90% over the last 50 years, this is a serious problem.

But it doesn’t stop those from wanting to hunt and kill them for profit. Each year, as many as a hundred million sharks are killed, many slaughtered for their fins which are used to make shark fin soup, a delicacy in Asia. They are also poached for their teeth, and jaws can bring in up to $50,000 in some areas of the world. No wonder they are in danger and endangered…greed has once again stepped in.

Crazy, but some people in this world think that the Great White Sharks are a threat to society! Therefore, the shark is hunted to keep them from eating anyone. Oh that is just silly.  It has even be said that some fishermen kill them because the sharks destroy their fishing nets.  And sadly, some  kill them for the sport, the thrill of knowing that they can kill one of them.  So basically killing for the sake of killing!  That is just so barbaric.  Not only are sharks a slow breeding species to begin with, but I think the rate that they are killing them for their coveted body parts,  tells me that our species is not in danger of them taking over the planet. And even if we could stop the killing of sharks, do people really think they could be a threat to our society? – A ridiculous thought in my mind, but what do I know?

Do I have any readers out there who actually feel this way…that they could actually ‘take over’? I’d be interested to hear from one of you.

Earthlings Mildred and Julie:  I have read that the Great Whites  are now a protected species in Australia, South Africa and California where most of the sharks reside. However aside from these areas millions are still being killed every year and it wouldn’t surprise me if  they are killed illegally even in the protected areas. Millions too many in my mind. What can be done to help? Can you tell us more about these Great Whites since you got to experience the lives of them first hand? How does our ecosystem depend on their livelihood?  And what exactly will happen to our ecosystem if they are not protected? Please tell us what you know – thanks.

Readers: Any of you a lover of sharks? If you have anything to add here, I’d sure appreciate your comments too.

Anonz:  It was very tongue and cheek…Just havin’ a little fun.

ZL: Girlfriend, you are taking me way to seriously, but I guess I can go that route…..Okay…to answer your queries…Offending anyone? You know my answer to that one…’If you don’t like what you read…” I don’t think I need to go any further on that one. Quit and have me and my readers miss out on the love fest?! I think not! If you think what you two say to each other is ‘irrelevant’ to my readers and that they are ‘not even present’ – you need to wake up…if you don’t mind me saying…in a good way. :)  C’mon Lill…if others were talking like this on my blog would YOU pay no attention? Haha! Again, I think not….you and I would be blabbing about it like we do everything else! Enough said….

Peace out.

‘Embarrassment’ does not equal ‘Empowerment’

Posted by michellemoquin on 9th August 2008

Hello Maddie:  I am assuming that you are talking about the girls in training. What do you suggest the American women do?  I’ll tell you what I suggest. Tell the girls to get over it….in an empathetic way of course. If you remember you too were once an American woman so far behind the rest of the worlds girls.

Embarrassment is a form of self pity. If one is going to wallow in it one will not learn the lessons from the mistakes that one has made that brought on the embarrassment in the first place.  I speak this way because I recognize this behavior in myself.

Feeling sorry for ones self is one of the biggest mistakes American women make over and over again. It not only is not empowering but it has no benefits what-so-ever. I would say to these women to look at what circumstance brought on the embarrassment, and look at it from a mature, unemotional perspective. One can not use the excuses….’Oh I was too young to know’,  or ‘I was never taught or informed.’ At some point, one has to wake up and see the accountability in the actions and take responsibility.  When the ‘poor me, I didn’t know any better’ victim attitude is buried, strength rises. And that strength is powerful.  They only need be embarrassed if they don’t learn from their mistakes and rise above. Use the embarrassments to grow and to be able to teach other women.

Am I off base?…maybe you weren’t seeking this advice and I am just projecting and sharing my views from a recent incident in my own life. I am not immune from such lessons. I have been embarrassed and ashamed over actions that I did when I was very ‘young and dumb’.  It wasn’t until recently that I was privy to my own mistakes and how they have shaped my life.  Yes, I was embarrassed, yes, I was ashamed, and yes I was wallowing.  But all it left me feeling was helpless and out of control. Now, what good does that do me? Nothing, I was not empowered at all.

What did I do? I had to consciously control my emotions and get present so that I could examine my actions. No crying…no ‘buts’. It was not easy. I was major PMS but again…excuses aside. If I had continued wallowing I would not have learned what I am passing along today. No one is perfect. Shit happens. Life hands us lessons, sometimes embarrassing ones, and it is up to us to learn from them and more importantly pass them on. If one can learn and be able to share by teaching with an empathetic ear, then wouldn’t you say the embarrassment was worth it? It’s not about making embarrassing mistakes it is about what you do afterwards. Put it behind you and stop being ashamed. Use your embarrassing moments to your benefit not to your detriment. By the way, this is me passing this on.

Am I making myself clear here? I’m not sure if I have articulated my thoughts well this morning, or if you even wanted to hear all of this…..too late, it is out there now.

Contraception = Abortion

Posted by michellemoquin on 21st July 2008

Can we just please fast forward to 2009? This whole rights over our bodies issue just continues and doesn’t seem to be getting any better. In fact I feel like we are going backwards. Now the Bushmin are trying to redefine abortion in the name of contraception.  Believe it or not they are trying to say that the definition of abortion  includes some contraception methods such as birth control pills and intrauterine devices! They have got to be kidding? I am livid over this.

Are we now changing the definition of conception and taking it even further than before? Conception occurs when the egg and the sperm unite in the Fallopian tubes. It then takes another 3-4 days before the fertilized egg implants into uterus. The birth control methods that they are  trying to link to abortion, interrupt this path – the sperm never reaches the egg! No conception occurs.

How are women supposed to protect themselves from getting pregnant when they are labeling some of the simplest and most effective birth control methods as abortions.  As I write this I am almost in tears I am so pissed off.  What are women going to do if this plan goes through? Let me tell you, if this plan goes through, we can all say goodbye to all of the funding dedicated to hospitals and states where medical providers are obligated to offer legal abortions  and contraception to women.  They are trying to back door us women…leave us no choice but to have children that we do not want if we can not be supplied with good contraception that we can count on.  It is another push closer towards overturning Roe v Wade.

Women rely on good birth control.  It is especially crucial for women who are against having abortions in the first place. They would now be even more susceptible to getting pregnant and actually go through with the pregnancy just because of their morals. We can say hello to more unwanted pregnancies. And those that are not opposed to abortions…well, they are going to abort anyway, so you can count on the abortion numbers going up too. Abortion will become a form of birth control!

God I wish men could get pregnant! How can men possibly relate? They can’t or they wouldn’t be putting us through this…or would they? In what area can we even make a comparison? Hey you men out there who can’t get it up anymore: How would you like it if you didn’t have access to Viagra or some penis enhancer?  How about if we said, ‘Sorry, you little penis men..or sorry you premature ejaculator, or sorry you limp dick…you’re just gonna have to figure out another way to get it up and keep it up!’  You know that would never happen. No not to men. They would never in a million years give in to that. Not to mention that whatever it is they’re taking is for their enhanced sexual pleasure. Not to say that women aren’t happy about a hard dick. But gee…last time I checked taking birth control didn’t enhance my sex life…It doesn’t provide women with instant lubrication or an instant orgasm. Birth control is not a desire, No, it is a necessity in life; one that can not be taken away.  I may not get pleasure from it but what it does provide, more than just the obvious, is it provides me with ‘peace of mind.’ Birth control allows women to feel safe, and free; to be able to enjoy sex without the worry.  Oh yeah, but I forgot, silly me…many men aren’t concerned about women enjoying sex…many just don’t care if a woman gets off or not. Oh no, so long as he gets his. Because ya know what, if they did care about women’s necessities, women’s happiness, women’s rights,  this issue would never have come up and we wouldn’t be having this discussion.

And, I have to add…years ago women had to fight to get tampon advertisements on TV.  In case you are in the dark about this, (I am speaking to the men) we don’t choose to get our periods – it is a natural monthly occurrence.  Yet it was a fight to be heard, let alone be seen….and god forbid on TV.  Men didn’t want to hear about periods; they didn’t think it was something a child should see on television. Oh…But when men can’t get it up and a solution to their problem was discovered, of course it had to be advertised – EVERYWHERE.  You can’t watch  television for 5 minutes without seeing some Viagra or other male enhancer splashed across the television screen.

Don’t let birth control be denied to women. I am not only speaking to the women out there but I am speaking to the men out there too – don’t you dare sit back and do nothing. Hillary is fighting hard against these proposed changes.

“We will not put up with this radical, ideological agenda to turn the clock back on women’s rights. Women would watch their contraceptive coverage disappear overnight.”

-Senator Hillary Clinton

Readers: Please do something about it. Join her in the fight by at least going to her website and signing the petition…Thank you. Thanks Doug for the heads upon this.

Hello Madaline:  I will get back to you in regards to all of your concerns tomorrow. I understand that you and the girls are sick of Earth. I am feeling that a bit myself these days. Hang in there.

Hi Sheikh:  Thank you for enlightening us about Pickens. I am so disappointed this morning to read what you had to say about him and Anonz, that I am speechless.

I have to say that when I first saw Pickens my first thought was, ‘Hmmm…white man from Texas in the oil business’…I immediately judged and did not trust his intentions.  But after reading what he had to say I thought his plan sounded good. It probably is. My mistake was not listening to my gut first impression and diving deeper into his past.  Is it once again, that things aren’t what they seem or am I just not doing enough homework? I hope that you my readers were more thorough than I was.

Anonz: I am hoping that what the girls say is not true; I would like to hear your side of the story. I had faith in you and I had your back covered in hopes that you were a changed man ready to do great things with your bills.  Please tell me that I made the right decision.

Signing off…

What is a Politician doing in the Doctor’s office?

Posted by michellemoquin on 1st July 2008

The woman’s right to choose is back on my agenda today. Are you familiar with  the abortion law in South Dakota? Thanks to the signature of Gov. Mike Rounds, the bill would make it a crime for doctors to perform an abortion unless the procedure was necessary to save the woman’s life. It would make no exception for cases of rape or incest. Hmm..let’s see, could it be as Adam pointed out a few days ago that this is because ‘women are inherently a distraction or impediment to the accomplishments of man…’ Oh so of course it is her fault for getting raped, therefore…sorry, you have to have the child. This makes me ill.  I see many women saying, ‘Fuck that.’ and crossing over the state line. What if crossing the line wasn’t a solution?

When The Governor signed this bill in 2006, he expected the law would be tied up in court for years and the law would therefore not take effect unless South Dakota state got the case to the US Supreme Court and won. This is promising because the Legislature expects the law to give the Supreme Court an opportunity to overturn Roe, making an abortion ban constitutional.  It would take 5 justices to overturn Roe. Remember Madaline’s STR? (Scalia, Thomas and Roberts – the trio of crooks she mentioned in a few blogs back) Scalia and Thomas have clearly indicated that they would vote to overturn Roe, and abortion opponents have high hopes that fellow conservatives Roberts and Alito will join them.

I agree with Madaline.  The Supreme Court should be represented by at least 5 women. Where were the voices of the American women when all of these men got appointed? Including myself? – I am to blame too. I have to be honest, and this is no excuse, but my head was in the sand when it came to this and other important issues that could now have a lasting effect on the livelihood of myself and women in this country.

So what’s next? Now, they are inching their way even further to make an abortion ban constitutional and one way they are going about it is by preying on those getting the abortions by STRessing them out through an emotional guilt trip in the process. How are they doing this? Now the ‘Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals has lifted a preliminary injunction against a South Dakota law that requires doctors to tell women seeking abortions that the procedure ends a human life, deciding that the law is likely constitutional.’  What if a doctor doesn’t believe that an abortion ends a human life?  To me this is all about legislating a religious belief, not about legislating a fact.  Who decides when life begins and when it becomes a human?  For everyone it is different. This isn’t about providing factual information to the patient; it’s about pushing ideologies.  This places politicians between women and their doctors. For it to be a law that doctors must tell their patients this, that they must read ideological language to women seeking abortions is completely mindless not to mention totally bias. This violates the doctors free speech rights by enforcing them to say something that they may not believe.  And just as bad, they intend to put a guilt trip on the woman for doing it by preying on her vulnerable emotions.  This is what the Doctors are now required to say to these women:

‘The abortion will terminate the life of a whole, separate, unique, living human being.’  And…they must also say that they have a right to continue a pregnancy and that abortion may cause women psychological harm, including thoughts of suicide.’  Can you believe this? Who says this is a whole, separate, unique, living human being?  Fine if you believe that but don’t put an emotional guilt trip on someone who doesn’t, and don’t make it a law for a doctor to have to tell what he may not believe.   And why not present the other side? What about women who have a child and have thoughts of suicide? Those women exist too.  Oh yeah, to STR there is no other side. The court has given South Dakota doctors 21 days to start complying with the law.

I know many of us live in California and we could never imagine something like this happening in our own liberal state, but we must look at what is happening in our own country and not get complacent in our own little worlds. Our rights are being taken away, chipped away on a daily basis. It is not enough to tell our daughters; we must show action too and be exemplary in our behavior.

For me, my strongest passion has always been to protect the animals and the environment, for they are the voiceless.  But I have come to realize that unless I as a woman am considered an equal to a man, my voice as a woman will mean nothing….My presence a mere distraction and my actions something to tolerate.  I can’t let that happen.

Readers: In regards to women becoming equal to man, Adam and Madaline gave some good suggestions yesterday – How will you speak up now?

If you want to take action I am listing a few websites below that I know about.  If you have any others that you want to share please post them – thanks.
