Light Your Fire

Marcus:  Thanks so much for your comment and support. I feel the same way. And yes we do have a handful of work to do. But first, women need to come together like the men…and we need to stick together, like the men. But I have faith that we will wake up and realize the power that we do have and seize it. I’ll quote one of my fave quotes from the Dalai Lama, that I have posted here before:

”The future well being of our planet rests in the empowered hands and compassionate hearts of its women!”

Zen Lill: I wish I could say that I read her blog all of the time, but I go there as much as I can and take a peek. Danielle is so inspiring; she is just a chic that rocks. How cool that you got in on her Birthday Firestarter Special. I wish I had jumped in on that. I just discovered it the other day…thinking about doing it myself. Let me know how it goes – there has been nothing but rave reviews.

Readers:  I decided to write about Danielle LaPorte today because she is one girl who takes life by the balls, ignites the fire, and blazes trails. If you need a firestarter to jump start your business, I suggest you check out her new digital book, and let Danielle help you light your fire and start blazin’ some trails. Even though I have not ordered her book, yet, :) I highly recommend it.

Talk about a girl who has got it going – this girl does. Danielle is amazing. I am so inspired by her that I can sometimes get lost on her website as I click through and through learning so much about her, what she does, what she’s done for others.

Here’s a little something to whet your appetite:

So…are you curious yet? If so, read on….

THE FIRE STARTER SESSIONS is: an e-book meets video transmission of acumen and love. You: are likely sitting on an empire of content, product, services, and prosperity that needs a spark — or blow torch — to take it to the next level. You: want to rock your revenue streams and do meaningful things in the world. You: want to do it as soon as possible.

Sincerity. Intelligence. Generosity.

In the last year alone, I’ve worked with 462+ entrepreneurs (my 1-on-1 Fire Starter consults are $500 and booked six weeks in advance.) For CEOs, coaches, artists, retailers, bestselling authors — from site design to big dreams — my strategies combine passion with pragmatism to get to fulfillment and cash. Someone once called me The High Priestess of Practicality. Yes! Divine inspiration works best with common sense.

Seriously useful.

Each chapter is it’s own “Fire Starter Session” of multimedia components. It’s great to work on these with a group – and there’s a guide for that in the book.

There are 19 actual Sessions, about 13 videos + 22 worksheets!

Some of the Sessions are:
: True Strengths + The Metrics of Ease
: Branding: Clarifying the Diamond of You
: Products + Services: Making Stuff That Feels Good to Make
: Money: More is More, Enough is Plenty
: Web Design + Traffic: Your Virtual Real-Estate
: Stamina + Losses
: Time + Fear Management
: Visioning: Authentic Dreaming
: Collaboration: Supporting Characters

Lived experience.

There have been many times in the highs and lows of my entrepreneurial journey that I just wanted someone who’d been around the block to tell me what the hell to do. I knew full well that the final call was mine to make. But when you’re trying to make art and payroll, it’s such a relief to get your advice straight up, with a side of empathy.

And that’s how you’ll get it in THE FIRE STARTER SESSIONS: results-driven inspiration.

You’ll get my deep and detailed knowledge from helping hundreds of entrepreneurs lift their companies to new levels, and the flops and victories of my own businesses: strategizing dozens of successful publicity campaignsdriving traffic to multiple websites, striking deals with publishersraising capital, selling white papers to the Pentagon, building teams, creating viable intellectual property - succeeding, failing, and succeeding again. And I’ve done as much time in ashrams and self-help workshops, as I have in boardrooms and start-ups, so my worldview is…shall we say, progressively pragmatic.

In addition to getting my kinda smarts, I’m including interviews with some A-league marketing strategists, pro-bloggers, branding strategists, and creativity coaches. Help-full.

Light a fire under your aspirations.

Worksheets that help you draw conclusions, quick videos with motivational punch, connections to current thinkers, how-to’s, and frank wisdom – THE FIRE STARTER SESSIONS is packed with inspiration that you will put to use. In short: this works.

Follow your instincts. You know…be even more amazing then you already are. Anything is possible.

So…Readers, what do you think? Pretty incredible eh? I say go for it and light that fire. I’m sure it’s well worth the $150 price tag. And hey, if you buy her book 5 bucks will go to The Acumen Fund or Women for Women International

Disclaimer: No, I am not getting a kickback from writing about Danielle and her awesome, inspiring, seriously useful book. It is such a pleasure for me to feature her today. Like I said, this girl rocks, and I want her to be on my team. Huh…guess I just convinced myself to buy the book. :) How about you?

Peace out….enjoy this beeeautiful day!!

xoxo

Let’s Ban The Bag

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 9th June 2010

Bookmark and Share

I was just saying to Doug a few weeks ago that I think grocery stores should no longer have bags (plastic or paper) available at the counter when the cashier rings up your purchases. If someone forgets to bring a bag when they go shopping, there will be containers of used bags available for free, or they can buy a reusable eco friendly bag (some are so cool) that the store sells, so that they will have something to pack their goods in. I say bag the bag. We’re using too many trees and our world is littered with plastic bags.

Here’s The 10 Second Plastic Bag Lesson: I found this printed on the side of the box of the only plastic bags I use: BioBag, the certified biodegradable compostable plastic bag.

  • Regular Polyethylene-based plastic bags can take over 100 years to degrade and are not compostable.
  • Less than 2% of all plastic bags ever get recycled.
  • Plastic bags litter our streets, backwoods and waterways.
  • Studies indicate that 100,000 marine animals and 2 million birds die every year from ingesting and being caught up in plastic debris. (And we thought the BP spill was bad enough. Why isn’t this on the news everyday?!)
  • Some manufacturers are blending additives to polyethylene to produce ‘degradable’ bags. Unfortunately this process fragments the bags into pieces of plastic debris that do not meet the ASTM D6400 standard for compostable plastic.

Now here are some facts about BioBag:

BioBag is proud to be the best selling brand of 100% biodegradable and certified compostable bags made from the material, Mater-Bi. We are also proud to be the first “bag from corn” to achieve national distribution of retail products through natural food stores across the country.

Recently, the city of San Francisco selected BioBag to promote their residential food waste collection program. The city is sending 100,000 rolls of BioBags to residents within the county to help educate consumers on the importance of diverting food and other biodegradable waste from entering landfills. San Francisco residents can now purchase additional supplies at over 100 outlets in the bay area. BioBag is proud to be a partner in this important effort.

We have listed below facts and data regarding BioBag products:

  • BioBag products are certified by the Biodegradable Products Institute to meet the ASTM D6400 specification. The BPI logo is shown at the bottom of this page. Always look for the logo to assure the products you buy are truly biodegradable and compostable.
  • BioBag products meet the California law, SB 1749 and 1979, for biodegradable and compostable product claims.
  • BioBags are certified GMO Free. Furthermore, we only source corn from countries that do not allow GMO testing.
  • No polyethylene is used in the production of BioBags.
  • BioBags are DEN certified for restricted use of metals in our soy-based inks and dyes.
  • There are no chemical additives to enhance decomposition. The bags biodegrade naturally when expose to the earth’s elements and micro-organisms in the soil.
  • BioBags “breathe”, which allows heat and moisture to escape or evaporate. This feature reduces bacterial build-up of collected waste, thus reducing odor.
  • BioBags will decompose in a controlled composting environment in 10-45 days, leaving no harmful residues behind.
  • BioBags will decompose in a natural setting at an extended rate comparable to other naturally biodegradable materials, such as paper, leaves and food waste.
  • BioBags will biodegrade in both fresh and salt water. Australian studies suggest decomposition occurs between 8-14 months. We do not support placing any material in our oceans, lakes or waterways.

Landfill Placement of BioBags:

BioBags are designed to be composted and returned naturally back to the earth. If BioBags are placed in an “open” or “turned” landfill they will decompose at a rate similar to other biodegradable materials in the same setting. If BioBags are placed in an anaerobic (air-locked) landfill and deprived of oxygen and the existence of the micro-organisms that “eat” naturally biodegradable materials, their ability to decompose will be severely restricted. This is true of all biodegradable materials placed in this setting, including paper, yard waste and food waste.

As a consumer, you should be quite suspicious of any manufacturer making claims that their products will biodegrade quickly in an air-locked landfill.

Then the other day Doug e-mailed me to tell me that there’s a new law that Arnold Schwarzenegger is planning on signing that will ban plastic bags from being given away in grocery stores. Recycled paper bags will still be available but they will have to pay $.05 each – Hey I like that. It’s a good start and a long time coming if you ask me.

Here’s an article I found:

Remember how ten or twenty years ago, a trip to the grocery store always concluded with the same question: “Paper or plastic?” That question has largely been answered, as grocers now default to plastic about 80 percent of the time. Those plastic bags are cheap, convenient — and an environmental menace. At best, they mar the landscape, lending an aimless, trashy vibe to urban streets. Far more disturbingly, they clog our landfills, use up nonrenewable resources such as petroleum, and kill wildlife both on land and in water, according to the Earth Resource Foundation.

Some communities and even entire countries are attempting to kick the plastic bag habit by taxing them, encouraging citizens to switch to reusable shopping bags. The state of California may be next, according to the L.A. Times. Bill AB 1998 would take things a bit farther than a simple tax, however — it would enforce an outright ban. Customers who forget to bring reusable bags to the store would have the option to pay a minimum of 5 cents apiece for recycled paper bags.

The bill passed in the California State Assembly last Wednesday. If the Senate votes similarly, the new law would go into effect in 2012. Californians’ reactions are, perhaps predictably, mixed. Republican governor Arnold Schwarzenegger called it “a great victory for our environment” and promised to sign it into law when it crosses his desk. Some of his Republican colleagues, however, worry that the new law creates undue financial burden during an already rough economy. “This is not the time to be putting a financial burden on families,” Assemblyman Ted Gaines, R-Granite Bay, told the L.A. Times.

Store-goers’ reactions vary as much as the politicians’ do. “It’s a hassle. I don’t want to carry my own bag all the time with me. I go into the store randomly, and I don’t like to pay extra for a bag,” said Sacramento shopper Brett Akacin when asked his opinion on the bill. But another Sacramento resident, Ashley Smith, expressed more openness to the idea because, as she put it, “It’s good to do things that are good for the environment.

Readers: When I read the first paragraph stating that 80% of the people who go grocery shopping opt for the plastic bag, my mouth dropped. But then I realized that most people unfortunately are still shopping at Safeway, Vons or whatever else is comparable in their town. And Plastic is the bag. Part of the reason I don’t shop those stores is mostly because they don’t carry the food I like, but I am appalled when I see plastic bag after plastic bag filled with food, being carried out. Don’t people realize or care about the amount of plastic that is being used?

I shop at Trader Joes, Whole Foods or Berkeley Bowl, and most people who shop there rarely take a paper bag; they are bringing their own reusable.  In fact I don’t even know if you can still get plastic at those stores. But I have to say, I am lucky that I live the Bay Area so I have access to grocery stores that care and make an effort to educate their patrons. I refuse to shop in stores that aren’t doing something sustainable. And even the ones I mentioned above, I feel can do more.

Still, I shop where I shop, and pay a little bit more. But I know it’s better for all. I don’t care how broke I am, I will skimp where I need to in other areas of my life, but I am not going to skimp when it comes to my health or the animals and the environment. And like the saying goes, “You can pay for it now or you can pay for it later at the doctor’s office.” I opt for now, knowing I am not only treating myself well, but my choices are better for the animals and the environment. I got a little off subject but I just had to throw that in.

So…back to banning the bag…

And then to read that some people think it is a hassle“I don’t want to carry my bag all of the time.” Oh boo hoo -please, spare me the drama and laziness. Keep the bags in your trunk and carry one in when you go shopping. How difficult is that? Isn’t saving our environment worth a little hassle? Once you forget it a few times and you have to run back to your car, believe me you’ll learn quick enough. Just make it a habit like bringing your purse or your wallet. Easy and hassle-free.

What’dya say…Let’s bag the bag and ban it! You know I’m all for it…country wide. And if you live in California, ‘Arnie’ doesn’t need any urging to sign this ban. As stated in the article above, he’s in favor of it and promises to sign it. I think victory is in the bag. Pun intended. :)

Oh, my disclaimer: No, I am not getting any free Biobags (I wish!), nor any perks from any of the stores mentioned above. However, I do believe in these products, and I do love shopping at those grocery stores, so it is my pleasure to toot a bit about them.

*********

Zen Lill: My pleasure. I know you’re with me on this one.

Hey Norma and Harry: Thanks for voting!

Peacin’ out sans plastic…

The Ocean Is Not A Grocery Store

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 3rd June 2010

Bookmark and Share

Good morning!

Doug sent this to me the other day and I wanted to post it today. (Thanks Doug!) This is a video from a Ted conference. Brian Skerry, the guest speaker, who has a love for the underworld and all of its beautiful life,  is an amazing photographer who gives us a peek at the ocean’s glory and horror.  If you are a lover of the ocean and all its beauty, like I am, and how can you not, I think you’ll enjoy and appreciate Skerry’s perspective.

I titled my write this morning, from a quote that stuck with me that Skerry said in his talk. “The ocean is not a grocery store”. I never thought of it that way, and yet we treat it that way. This is how we treat the life that sustains us…by taking and taking and taking as if there will always be more to take…an endless supply, as if ‘someone’ is going to continue to stock the sea for us. But there isn’t and there won’t be unless it’s us – unless we give back to the ocean by not taking.

The ocean, and all that lives there, doesn’t have time to replenish itself and thrive because of the impact we make by our take. And just what are we giving back?

Readers: It’s our time to give back.  Thoughts? Blog me.

Zen Lill: I’ll have to check that website out. Thanks for the gratitude. :) I miss writing those to my friends and family. I so enjoyed it when I did. I was hoping that it would get paid forward in some way and I think it did. Speaking of gratitude, I see many of your admirers showed you some gratitude. :)

Una: Thanks. I’ll keep that in mind. :)

Mike: That is a great question. I’m sure MSNBC is but you know FOX isn’t addressing that question. And I find that our society moves so quickly that people only take notice of what is currently being repeatedly said. To blame Obama for this is just ridiculous. Opinions can be so short-sighted and lazy. ‘Selective’ memory comes to mind too.

Beatrice: My Intro for the day was all about ZL. And while I don’t doubt you are a hot chick, I posted her photo because Zen Lill is a regular visitor to my blog and I thought Zen Lill’s admirers would like a peek at her prettiness.

Anon: Believe me, I know. But to answer you, ‘No you are not being shelved for ZL.’ She is just a good pal – Plus ZL’s has voiced she’s not into women. Besides that, I don’t believe either of us are each other’s type. Hmm…do I have a type? Not sure if I do – I appreciate all women in their glory – Anyway…So if I am yours, make yourself known.  :)

Homer: Good point. Typical stance for hypocrites isn’t it?

Frances and Connie: I can not imagine what it must be like to live there. Katrina was more than enough, and now this. I feel for you and everyone there.  Perhaps this hard lesson will lead us to a cleaner source of energy sooner.

Gary: Do you see me smiling as I read your write? I am. Thank you for your kind words – such a delightful read.

Sylvia: Thanks for posting that very informative article. I hope the best for your brother.

Lastly, greed over a great story is surfacing from my ‘loyal’(?) readers. The Big Day: Your Wedding

Good morning! How is everyone? I can tell you I am beat, and in need of drink and food….specifically a cup of coffee, and honestly pancakes are ringing my bell this morning.

Doug and I went to the San Francisco Symphony Black and White Ball last night with friends and it was a blast. Probably the most fun that I’ve had at this ball in years, if not the most.

We started off meeting our friends at RN74, one of Michael Mina’s restaurants, for drinks and apps beforehand, and then headed to the ball.

If any of my local readers went, I hope that you got to experience Kool and The Gang, because they rocked with the best dance music all night – Okay, the band playing earlier in the evening covering Michael Jackson was awesome to dance to too, but I have to say Kool was just the best to boogie, and a fantastic was to end the evening. I was totally in my element and loving it.

Readers: If you had the pleasure of attending this party of the year, did you have fun? Blog me. I’d love to hear how your evening went.

So onto today’s write….

It is that time of year when couples plan their big day. Planning weddings can be a stressful time even if one hires a Wedding Planner. The scammers know how important all of the little details, making up the perfect wedding day, can be.

And the last thing you want to happen with your hard earned money is to be conned. But the scammers are out there and they don’t care that it is your wedding, your special day that you’ve been planning for months.

They prey on the ‘in love and happy’ hoping to make a killing. Even if you’re not the bride or groom to be, the scammers target people who are involved in weddings such as photographers and wedding planners too. So be on the look out. Here’s an article from scambusters warning you of their tricks:

WEDDING SCAMS

Make Sure A Wedding Scam Doesn’t Ruin The Big Day
<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>~<>

Spring is the most popular time for weddings — so it’s also the peak period for wedding scams.

You might have read recently of a wedding scam in Boston, when thousands of brides-to-be and bridal service exhibitors were conned into paying for tickets and booths at a non-existent Home and Bride Show.

And, as the Boston non-event demonstrated, they’re targeted not just at the bride and groom but also at photographers, wedding planners and others involved in what is supposed to be a wonderful day.

So this week we highlight four key areas where everyone involved in weddings needs to be on the alert.

1. Phony Events

We’re thinking of two wedding scams here:

* Exhibitions and shows like the one in Boston, which were promoted through a website and probably cost victims in excess of $100,000.

Action: Always check the credentials/references of anyone who claims to be organizing an event. If they don’t have a track record, be wary — at the very least avoid paying in advance.

* Bogus weddings — a Nigerian advance payment trick, in which a photographer or wedding planner is “booked,” receives a check that turns out to be worthless, and is asked to wire cash payments to another “service provider,” who is actually the scammer.

Action: Just don’t ever agree to do this, however plausible it sounds. Tell whoever contacts you that it’s simply not your policy. Anyway, never wire cash to someone you don’t know or
are not 110% sure of.

Check out our earlier issue on Nigerian advance fee scams.

2. Service Providers Who Let You Down

Yes, they do that — bridal gown makers and suppliers, bakers, caterers, entertainers, wedding planners and even venues can let you down, either by unintentionally failing to deliver or through an out-and-out wedding scam in which they never intended to play their part.

In particular, the recession has driven many of these types out of business — and the less reputable ones head for the hills with their customers’ cash.

Action: A reputable wedding planner (get references) can take a lot of the risk out of organizing the big day, including conducting all the necessary checks, though they probably won’t be involved in buying the wedding dress (see also below).

Also consider taking out insurance for things that might go wrong.

If you’re doing it yourself, try to spread the hard work of checking everything out, including eyeballing venues and going to see entertainers in action.

3. The Dress Label Wedding Scam

You wouldn’t credit it but a number of wedding gown suppliers have been in hot water with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) for mislabeling dresses or even switching labels.

They might do this to disguise the origin of the dress, the fabric content or the cleaning instructions. You could pay a fortune for a “silk” dress that’s actually cheap fabric worth only a fraction of the cost.

It’s not illegal for a bridal salon to insert its own label in a gown but the FTC does have stringent rules about what retailers and manufacturers can and can’t do.

http://clicks.aweber.com/y/ct/ l=8JUKO&m=1b73Y9toi0tWfo&b=mOiQuaLdG9Pudnm0Ph9zOA

Action: It’s mainly down to reputation here. You’re unlikely to have the time to check out the accuracy of the label, but you can perhaps ask the vendor if the labeling complies with
FTC regulations, to let them know you know.

If you’re having the dress altered, again check out the reputation of the service. If you’re in any doubt, get a written contract from them stating what will be done, how much it is expected to cost and when it will be completed.

4. The Overseas Wedding Scam

Happily, getting married abroad does not generally lead to a scam but it sometimes still can be a fraught and troublesome business.

The main risks to watch out for:

* Weddings not officially recorded. There was a widely-reported incident in the Dominican Republic in which hundreds of couples paid for weddings that were never recorded.

* Weddings conducted by people not qualified to officiate.

* Extra charges and overpricing for services.

* A marriage license that is not recognized in your home country.

Action: Again, a qualified, reputable wedding planner in your chosen venue will help. Otherwise, consider a pre-visit to the location.

In your home country check with the embassy, consulate or tourist information bureau of the country in which you’re planning to wed, about who can perform weddings and what the licensing system is.

Then check with the authorities in the community where you’re marrying, that the individual is registered and qualified. Also check with them afterwards that the marriage has been recorded.

For US citizens, the Department of State has a useful guide on marrying abroad. Check with them, or the equivalent in your home country, about recognition of marriage abroad.

Some general information on marriage in a limited number of countries can also be obtained from Overseas Citizens Services, Room 4811, Department of State, Washington, DC 20520.

American embassies and consulates abroad frequently have information too about marriage in the country in which they are located.

In addition, even if you’re getting married in your home country but perhaps plan on a non-religious or non-traditional marriage, it’s as well to check with your state Attorney General’s office on who is permitted to officiate.

For many people, getting married is one of the most memorable days of their lives. Just make sure it’s memorable for the right reason and not for a wedding scam.

TinkoMatic: Your Source For Deals And Job Hunting

David Tobiano is ‘The Man’ when it came to getting my blog up and running. (I couldn’t have done it without him and ‘My Man’.) More importantly, David also happens to be the genius behind the birthing of his brain baby TinkoMatic, a very user friendly tool to help you find just about any classified item you desire, including a job. And hey, with the job market so challenging, we could all use as much help as we can get. And with the economy the way it is, aren’t we always searching for a better deal? In either case, TinkoMatic is the website to use.

So…what makes TinkoMatic so special? Well, I have only used it a few times so far but I love the way I can view all that is available, all at once in one location - it is genius. And evidently I am not the only one who thinks so. Mashable, The Social Media Guide, listed TinkoMatic in their Spark of Genius series, which highlights a unique feature of startups. But…I’m getting ahead of myself, and you’re probably thinking, ‘What is Michelle talking about?”

Instead of me explaining the simplicity of this super startup, here’s a recent article from Tech Crunch:

TinkOmatic Makes Deal and Job Hunting More Organized (500 Invites)

In this economy, everyone is looking for a good deal. Startup TinkOmatic (currently in private beta) allows deal-hunting consumers to search and track classifieds or auction sites for multiple items at once, all in one location. Tracking classifieds on Craigslist or deals on Ebay can be overwhelming and tedious to consumers and TinkOmatic is hoping to provide an easier way to view these listings (The first 500 readers to enter the code “techcrunch” will get access to the beta).

The search aggregator application allows users to find items on Oodle, Kijiji, Ebay and Craigslist (Which opens in a new window). TinkOmatic also allows users to add RSS feeds from Trulia, Google Base and others to track items, jobs, apartments and cars. The results from each site are displayed in separate panes, a.ka. TinkBoxes, within the page. The user can access the site-specific searches (on Ebay or Craigslist) by clicking on the corresponding TinkBox. Searches can be limited by both location (TinkOmatic offers over 20 geographic locations) and by type of item. All searches can be saved and refreshed whenever the user accesses TinkOmatic. The site also enables people to create advanced search filters within their RSS readers and TinkOmatic searches featured on the site.

One economy-relevant feature is the ability to hunt for jobs, track listings and have the job searches updated each time a user logs in to the site. And of course, it’s a useful tool to organize updated multiple classified and auction searches in one area. In theory, it’s sort of similar toTrackle, NotifyMe and Yotify, except devoted to a concentrated area.

Here’s a instructional video about the site:

Readers: What do you think? Pretty cool eh? I think searching multiple services at once and having the ability to refine and save searches not only makes a lot of sense but can save you oodles of time. And we all could use more time in our lives. So if you’re a big eBay or Craigslist user, I suggest you give TinkoMatic a try, and bookmark it! I think you’ll love it, and find it so useful for all of your searches.

And my disclaimer: “No I am not getting a kickback from David. I just think his idea is brilliant and I wanted to share it with you.” :)

Thoughts? blog me.

I just want to add that I appreciate you all cutting it up right (Love that), in regards to the spacing of your articles.  So yes Sui,  you did cut it up right – Thanks. :)
