Vantablack: The blackest material on Earth

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 25th June 2016

Bookmark and Share

Good Morning!

For you science freaks, this is cool.

From Science Alert:

vantablackss_1024

WATCH: The blackest material on Earth can make dense metal float

One of the very first things you’ll learn in science class is that if something is denser than water, it sinks. A rock or a hunk of metal is denser than water, so no surprises what happens when you chuck one of those into a pond, but styrofoam is less dense than water, so it floats. Strangely enough, crude oil is slightly less dense than salt water, so that’s why it floats on the surface of the ocean.

Now that we’ve established the rules, let’s break them, using the coolest material ever – Vantablack, the blackest material on Earth.

In the video above, scientists from Surrey Nanosystems – the British company that invented Vantablack back in 2014 - demonstrate how the material is somehow able to make an aluminium disk float in a tub of water.

As you can see in the footage, both the aluminium and the water aren’t particularly happy about the situation, because the water is doing everything it can to bulge up and over the aluminium, but the incredibly hydrophobic Vantablack coating keeps repelling it away.

When the aluminium is dunked and retrieved from the water, it’s completely dry.

So what the hell is this physics-breaking substance? It might look like it, but Vantablack isn’t a paint, pigment, or fabric – it’s a special coating made from millions of carbon nanotubes, each one measuring around 20 namometres by 14 to 50 microns (1 nanometre equals 0.001 microns).

According to Surrey Nanosystems, a surface area of just 1 cm squared would contain around 1,000 million of these nanotubes.

When it was first unveiled back in 2014 as the blackest material ever produced, it could absorb all but 0.035 percent of visible light, making it borderline invisible to our eyes. In March, the team managed to make it even more black, and claimed that no spectrometer in the world is powerful enough to measure how much light it absorbs.

The reason Vantablack can render a dense aluminium disk buoyant is because, not only is it incredibly black, it also has ultra-low surface energy. As the video above explains, the coating’s low surface energy combined with the area of the disk helps to give it positive buoyancy. So cool.

To see more of this crazy stuff in action, here’s the newest iteration of the immeasurably black Vantablack:

!!!!!

Pretty cool huh? What’s on your mind this morning?

Blog me.

Thanks for being here with me!

Erica: It is one of the reasons why I am so pro Hillary. Sympathy only gets you so far, and as we women have seen and experienced, it doesn’t take us far enough. Men will never be able to empathize with us women. Only a woman can do that. It’s time we women ban together and as you say, “…vote the male misogynistic bastards out.” I’m with ya.

George/WP: You know I don’t hate men. I hate the things they do. You’ve been here long enough – you should know that by now. For once I agree with you and plan to do that. Just watch me.

DSCC: Nicely stated. I too cannot stress enough that Hillary needs those coattails…long and flowing. It’s up to us to get off of our lazy asses and give them to her. I HOPE America gets it.

Social Butterfly: Thanks for posting, Loved it. If so many are for gun control laws, and we know the majority are, we/they need to speak out and call Congress. There is no more sitting through silence and wishing things would change. We the people have to demand change.

Wayne: Thank you for posting this. It is just so sickening to me. I signed the petition from MoveOn. I encourage everyone else to sign as well.

Helen: My pleasure. I thought of getting a Samsung but decided to go with the iphone for convenience since I have a mac. The camera on the Samsung is such a better quality than the iphone 5s. I hope you’re enjoying it.

Right on, MoveOn.

Obama On The Tonight Show

Good morning!

First of all…

Happy Belated Birthday Mr. President!

Just in case you missed it last night, here’s an interview with President Obama on the  Tonight show with Jay Leno show:

President Obama Talks NSA, Trayvon, And Hillary Lunch With Jay Leno (Full Interview)

President Obama joined Jay Leno on Tuesday night for a wide-ranging interview that touched on everything from his recent lunch with Hillary Clinton to reassurances that the NSA surveillance programs are not as overblown as they’ve been made out to be. He also opened up about the international terror alert the government issued over the weekend.

Obama admitted he was disappointed that Russia offered asylum to Edward Snowden, but said he still intends to attend the G20 summit in Russia when that comes up. He declined to opine much on Snowden, but insisted that the NSA programs are not that threatening and domestic communications are not being collected en masse.

Obama also reflected on his remarks about Trayvon Martin and the racial dialogue he thinks the country needs to have.

Watch the full interview below, via NBC:

Readers: Wha’at’s up? Why did everyone write yesterday on the blog from the day before, after I posted yesterday’s blog? Confused? Get with it. I can see this morning you all did. :) Happy Hump day! Blog me.

Quu: I HOPE you’re having some fun too.

Edwin: I love men. My love doesn’t see colors. Whatever color they are means nothing to me. My love shines when the man I am with, no matter what color he is, treats me like a lady, and reveres me. And not just me, but women in general. Show me a man like that and in my mind he is a real man, and not just some boy trying to stick his dick in something warm and wet to get off.

Peace out.

“Carlos Danger” Is Sexting Again

Good morning!

Okay, I am Big “L”, little “a”…” this morning. I wanted to post something uplifting and cheerful for a Saturday but all my reading leads me to something not so pleasant. What’s a girl to do?

LeTa0: Nice to see you so active on my blog. And thanks for supporting my blog by sharing with the Huff Post readers that I don’t censor here. Although sometimes reading an uncensored blog where my readers spew hatred for people because of the color of their skin, can get to me. And then I remember, ah yes, it is just the tiny dicked white boys speaking out. No need to pay attention or respond to the white discharge. :)

Although I would love to hear what a newbie like you would say to them. Me? I’ve given my two plenty of times. I’m not in the mood this morning.  The blog is open to you and to anyone else who has words to share on whatever.

Blog this BABE.

Oh…before I head out to enjoy this beautiful day, I guess I need to post something for today. How silly of me; I almost forgot.

So…speaking of little dicks and white discharge, here’s something I found. It isn’t exactly the kind of “pleasing to the senses” that I was searching for this morning but it definitely speaks to them, and made me crack-up….so what the hell, it is weekend – Perfect for a little Saturday satire.

This is super hilarious – one of the best I’ve seen. Enjoy!

John Oliver Destroys Anthony Weiner In Hilarious Daily Show Video

Weiner, john oliver, daily show

John Oliver continues to impress as John Stewart’s temporary replacement on The Daily Show as seen in this new hilarious video from last night in which Oliver tackles the latest Anthony Weiner sex scandal.

Anthony Weiner, AKA Carlos Danger has has now had his political aspirations soiled twice after sending naked pictures of himself to other women.

As John Oliver notes, when Weiner got busted the first time, he showed some sort of regret for his actions. In this case, however, Weiner seems more interested in letting everyone know he predicted that this would happen than anything else.

Oliver’s analysis on the Weiner scandal continues in this second video.

As The Daily Show is famous for, Oliver picks plenty of fun at Weiner’s expense, but also gives some great food for thought regarding Weiner’s continued run for mayor. Weiner promised after the first scandal that events like these would never happen again. Earlier this year, Weiner publically claimed he was a changed man. He lied, and John Oliver is not ready to let Weiner get away with the act again.

John Oliver has done an amazing job filling John Stewart’s role as head of The Daily Show. Has he impressed you as much as he’s impressed us?

My answer is “Yes.”

Peace & Love and Laughter…we could certainly use more in this world.

San Diego UFO Photographed Over Historical Edgemoor Barn

Santeeufo

What exactly did Ellen Henry photograph in the sky above Santee, Calif., on May 7?

“It was clear and certainly not a bug,” Henry told local ABC TV affiliate News 10.

Henry is a member of the Santee Historical Society (SHS) located in San Diego County and, according to the SanteePatch, was taking pictures of a historical building, the Edgemoor Barn.

santeeufobarn

“I was at the Edgemoor property, in the middle of the day, to take pics of the barn to update the SHS barn logo. I was constantly looking up and around the area, including the sky’s background, so I can get it just right, and not at anytime did I see anything in the sky or heard a sound of an aircraft,” she said.

It wasn’t until after she took the picture that Henry realized her camera had captured something else that she hadn’t previously seen.

“I noticed a ‘speck’ on my LCD screen after I took the shot to check for clarity, and only realized it wasn’t a speck when I downloaded it on my computer.”

santeeufofar

The Edgemoor Barn — now a museum — just celebrated its 100th birthday. It was once part of a hospital facility and has developed a reputation for paranormal activity, including alleged ghost sightings.

“The barn sits under several flight paths,” said Janet Kwak in her on-air 10News report. “We called Gillespie Field and MCAS Miramar (Marine Corps Air Station), but neither could offer an explanation.”

“There is no way this was a commercial aircraft,” Henry said. “I would have heard it, especially as low as it seemed to be. Someone did mention perhaps it was a drone. However, I have not seen any drones that were round or oval, and lacking wings, rudders or propellers — even the drone that looks like a fly has wings.”

Another unusual thing happened: Henry reports that right after she snapped the UFO, her camera mysteriously stopped working.

Check out this collection of UFO videos from around the world:

*******

Zen Lill sent in several absolutely gorgeous pics. But being the business woman that I am. I will not use all my blog enticements at once. I have chosen 6 for now. The captions I added because I felt they help them mesh with today’s article. Enjoy!

Is ZL checking out that UFO they saw in San Diego or is  she just signaling the GirlZ?

What are you looking at ZL? Was there a landing we don’t know about?

What ever it was this girl is excited about it. Hello Viv? Yes, ZL, that would be the way I’d greet my favorite alien.

That was fun boys. But a girl can’t be naked all the time.  And a sun hat is for keeping the sun from baking a girl, isn’t it.

I do hope you like my fashion choice. I think the hat, shoes and dress makes for an excellent outing ensemble.

Well, all good things must come to an end. I do hope you like mine.

Readers: I know you’ve got plenty to say. Blog me. I HOPE everyone is enjoying their weekend!

Mike,TM: Thanks for posting the update.

Sandra: Although this is not a funny situation, your comment made me chuckle.

Peace & Love.

Just Noticing: Observations of a Blogger

Good morning!

“Just noticing…”

  • …Putting an eel up your butt isn’t a good idea.

Eel Removed From Man After Getting Stuck, Chewing Through Colon

Do not try this at home. Do not try this anywhere. Just do not try it.

A man in China’s southeastern Guangdong province admitted himself to a local hospital after he reportedly got a live eel stuck inside him. According to British tabloid The Sun, the man inserted the 20-inch-long Asian swamp eel into his anus after seeing it done in a porn movie, and he had to endure all-night surgery to have it extracted.

According to a HuffPost translation of a blogger’s post on Chinese message board forum Mop.com, the eel reportedly chewed through the man’s colon, perforating his large intestine, and became stuck in his body cavity. A graphic X-ray image (seen below) shows how far inside the eel was when the man came in for treatment.

Medical team members reportedly said the eel, which was “simply trying to find its way out,” was alive when removed but died shortly thereafter. According to The Sun, the man is still recovering at the hospital and might face animal cruelty charges.

The Asian swamp eel — also known as the rice eel or rice paddy eel — is a snake-shaped fish that is commonly sold live at food markets in East Asian countries.

Although this type of eel is known as an invasive species in parts of the United States, this isn’t the first time that it’s made its way into (ahem) foreign habitats.

In 2012, a New Zealand man had to have an eel removed from his posterior. In 2010, a Chinese man died after his friends allegedly inserted an eel into his rectum as a joke.

An X-ray image shows how far inside the man’s body the eel was able to get.
