Good morning!

First of all, thank you for the kind wellness wishes. I am not much better than I was yesterday, which is not like me. So, once again I am going to keep it brief.

No topic today. But before I do sign off I want to take my time to address at least a few of the comments and of course most importantly…

…I want to congratulate Evelyn and Harris for their recent engagement!!

Evelyn: I couldn’t be more delighted that my blog brought two wonderful people together and now you are in love, engaged, and soon will be married. I am soooooooo excited for the both of you! :) And, Yes!!!!!!!!! we would love to come to the wedding in France. Thank you for including us in your special day. I wouldn’t miss it!

However, Harris’s offer to pay our way is very generous but not necessary; (Are you reading Harris?) I would rather we pick up our own travel expenses, but I get the feeling that this may not be a topic up for negotiation. So for now, I would not want to upset your man, so if he insists, I accept his grand generosity with warm gratitude. Thank you.

And yes, I would also love to come out early to get better acquainted with you, and of course Harris, Ruth and “the girls“.

I am sorry that Harris’s family is not so supportive, but I am HOPEful that their hearts will open up, or else they will surely miss out.

Hmm…just the thought of finally meeting all of you makes me so happy.

And speaking of “the girls” and my blog…I can’t imagine that my blog will still be around 6 years from now but you never know. I didn’t think it would be around this long. But if it is, I will look forward to their insights and commentary.

But for now, I am thrilled over this news, and just looking forward to your wedding. And if there is anything I can do to assist in any way, please let me know. And of course, my lips will be zipped to protect your privacy. Please do not e-mail me the details of your wedding. Snail mail would be best for all concerned.

Love you back…

Hi Ruth: As always, it is good to hear from you too. I bet you are just delighted over Harris and Evelyn’s good news. I am so looking forward to meeting you and getting to know you as well! Reading about “the girls” and all they are doing is too much fun. You do have your hands full, but you seem quite happy about it. Please give them all big hugs and tell them that I am looking forward to meeting them and spending time with them during the wedding celebration. I will be bringing my tallest stilettos  :) And my best to Anonz – I HOPE that he is recovering quickly.

GT: Merci.

Now…what else is going on out there?

Larry: Thanks for clarifying. A tall blond I am certainly not. Zen Lill is obviously your pick and a good one it is. :) Hi ZL!

Jata: I have blogged about this exact same thing before.  Here’s a little excerpt from my write, “Aids, Rape For The Cure”, as I don’t think I can say it any better:

Oh please…just where did men get this idea? Answer: From their traditional healers – my guess is they were all men. No woman would ever succumb to such a myth. And what about the child? Now you’ve just infected a young girl (and yes, babies too!) with a disease in order to purge it from yourself? Gee thanks. How sick is that? And sorry….if one believes in this ridiculous act and then goes out and commits this heinous crime, and one isn’t cured of HIV or AIDS, doesn’t it prove that this myth holds no validity? Oh no….they just continue raping virgins.

Larry: I felt bad when I read your story. But it is probably for the best, as hard as it is. I usually read about men who tell their wives that they are gay, and not much news the other way around, but it does happen evidently. I HOPE that you find someone. Perhaps on my blog…you never know. :) Thanks for the kind compliments, and no you did not offend; not at all.

Okay that’s it for me today. It’s your turn to “flap your lips”…Blog me.

Lastly, greed over a great story is surfacing from my “loyal”(?) readers. With all this back and forth about who owns what, that appears on my blog, let me reiterate that all material posted on my blog becomes the sole property of my blog. If you want to reserve any proprietary rights don’t post it to my blog. I will prominently display this caveat on my blog from now on to remind those who may have forgotten this notice.

Hello…

I stayed in bed late. Not feeling well, so I am keeping it brief, and going back to bed.

A collection of photos of the people of Omo Valley, Southern Ethiopia, was sent to me quite some time ago, and I’ve been wanting to post the photos. They are now some of favorites for so many reasons.

Today seems like a good day to post one, so here it is.

This photo was taken by Hans Sylvester, and it is simply stunning. Enjoy! More photos and background on these incredibly beautiful and creative people later.

Readers: This is it for me today. But I’ll be back tomorrow and respond.  Blog me with whatever is on your mind.

Happy Chanukah!

Thanks for the reminder Anonymous

Peace & Love: You know what to do with it…

xoxo

TSA’s Abuse Of Power

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 30th November 2010

Good morning!

Okay so I got this e-mail last week during the busiest week for air travel. I didn’t post it but I’m posting it now because it is still relevant. TSA. If you ask me, and I know no one is asking but I’m going to tell you anyway, TSA stand for “Tits, Sex and Ass”, and that is exactly what TSA gets when they scan people in this pornographic way, not to mention the amounts of radiation exposure. Ready to do something?

Michelle -
It’s the busiest week for air travel – and the biggest week yet for TSA to abuse our rights. More than 25,000 people have already signed our petition to Congress to investigate the TSA.

Here’s how else the TSA has abused its power since then:

  • Made a breast cancer survivor flight attendant remove her prosthetic breast1
  • Dislodged a urostomy bag of a bladder cancer survivor, spilling urine all over himself2
  • TSA screeners themselves have come out against the aggressive patdowns3

This is insane – and it’s all just security theater to protect the TSA’s corrupt, ineffective porno scanners.
We need to stop TSA’s porno scanners and groping – sign the petition to Congress to investigate the TSA. Click here to add your name.

Thanks for standing up for dignity in our airports.

P.S. Are you flying this week? Know someone else who is? Download our “Know Your Rights at TSA” flier and make sure you and your fellow passengers know the risks and rights while dealing with TSA.

Porno Scanners, Groping and Prosecution
Tell Congress to Investigate
TSA’s Abuse of Power

Click here to sign the petition

Dear Michelle,
John Tyner had two options when he got to the airport:

  1. Go through TSA’s expensive new “porno scanners” unprotected, which the Airline Pilots Association tells pilots to refuse.1
  2. Get an aggressive groping by a TSA agent that one woman described as being “sexually assaulted by a government official.”2

Tyner chose the latter option. But when he objected to the TSA’s plan to fondle his genitals, the agents refused to let him board his flight. Tyner recorded the incident in a now-famous video in which he told the TSA to “don’t touch my junk.”3

Okay, Let’s take a video break here. The Tyner video just didn’t hold my interest, but seriousness aside, I just couldn’t resist posting the “TSA hustle” video by Michael Adams – too funny – ya gotta watch it.

Now the TSA says they are “investigating” Tyner, threatening him with prosecution and $11,000 in civil penalties.4 It should be obvious why the TSA is investigating Tyner: to intimidate the rest of us.

Investigate the TSA, not Tyner. Sign our petition demanding Congress investigate the TSA’s porno scanners, aggressive groping, and abuses of power. Click here to add your name:

These new aggressive “pat downs” started on November 1, to punish people like Tyner who refuse to go through the scanners. Neither the scanners nor the aggressive pat-downs make us any safer.

Experts call it “security theater,” to insure the market for this new, expensive boondoggle doesn’t dry up when the public refuses to participate

The House of Representatives voted against funding the scanners because they are incredibly invasive and don’t keep us safe.5 So the Department of Homeland Security flipped them the middle finger and used $25 million in stimulus funds to buy machines anyway – creating just one job in the process.6

Now the TSA is further abusing its power, threatening a citizen’s most basic rights to intimidate the rest of us.

Say no to TSA’s intimidation, and demand Congress investigate TSA’s new porno scanners and aggressive groping. Click here to sign the petition.

There should be no question: the only thing the TSA’s new “groping” policy is meant to impact is people’s willingness to go through these machines, which render images of people’s naked bodies so graphic one mother called it “child pornography.”7

And the TSA’s decision to prosecute Tyner is nothing but an attempt to intimidate the public from following his lead and resisting this outrageous invasion of their personal freedoms. They want us to give up our rights for their latest abuses of power.

This has nothing to do with keeping us “safe.” It’s the product of outrageous government corruption and an invasion of our most basic ideas of privacy.

Time to shut down TSA’s abuse of power. Sign our petition to Congress demanding an investigation of TSA’s porno scanners and groping policies.

Thanks for taking action on this important issue.

Readers: Did any of you experience someone touching your junk? Ick – Sick. Details, details, blog the details please. This has just got to stop.

Zen Lill, Honey, Delores Ellen: Hmm…I have to smile…I thought the article was very cute, a bit tongue in cheeky, not to be taken at “face value” – Ha! Pun intended. :) I liked it. We are obviously on opposite ends, though because I hear you loud and clear that you girls didn’t like it.

On another note, I rather liked that a guy wrote it. So many men trash their women once their looks start to fade, hinting at women to do this and that to look better. (That’s a nod to you Leo) And women fear that their man might go for a younger woman if they don’t keep themselves up; looking good.

This man, in my opinion, is saying accept yourself, and advising you to do something that is obviously not in his best interest. After all he is a surgeon. Okay so he’s telling you, you don’t need a facelift; he believes getting a dog is a better alternative. Whether he’s right or not, that’s up to you. And this has nothing to do with me being for or against facelifts; in fact I’m not against facelifts. Hey, do whatever makes you feel good.

That being said, I guess I stand alone on this one, and I don’t mind admitting it. I actually got a kick out of the comparison because it was so unexpected. To me, anyone that advocates saving a dog is okay in my book, even if he does compare it to something as crazy as facelifts.

What’s not to like? Perhaps I am just blinded by my love for animals. :)

Jackie: I agree with you. And all is noted. And like I’ve said before, “Common sense is not all that common.”

TP: I HOPE your princess is reading, and your fantasy becomes a reality soon.

I’m up and out of here early. So nice to see a few of you here lately. Keep coming – blog me.

Paris Rising…

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 14th November 2010

Bookmark and Share

Good morning!

I am getting the itch to travel; it has been awhile. Growing up in a very creative environment, I am also a lover of art in many mediums. While perusing the net, I came across this article on the FIAC art fair in Paris. Ah..the perfect combination: a beautiful city…fantastic art (not to mention fashion) …and no doubt love is a part of it too. :)

PARIS RISING: FIAC is more than an art fair – It’s An X-Ray Of Paris’ Vibrant Art Scene.

The Euro is spiking again, and so is Paris’ reputation as a crucial destination for both casual art pilgrims and serious collectors. Its pedigree as the cradle of Modern art is forever assured, but in recent years the buzz of contemporary art has been elsewhere–Berlin, London, Shanghai. However, there was evidence at last month’s 2010 FIAC (Foire Internationale d’Art Contemporain) that galleries world-wide should ink the 5-day fête in their schedules. Sales were reported to be brisk at both of its venues, the pavilion in the Cour Carrée (a marvel of ad hoc architecture in the bosom of the Louvre) and the Grand Palais, an exquisite Beaux-Arts superdome built in 1900. While the Grand Palais housed the more established galleries, the young and the brave were found at the Cour Carrée. In addition, there were outdoor pieces installed along the main path of the Jardin des Tuileries. 85,000 visitors swarmed through the fair–21,000 of them art-world professionals–an 8% increase over 2009. Taking advantage of all this traffic were nearby fringe fairs like Show Off, Art Elysees, Cutlog, Slick and, at the newly designed docks adjacent to the Quai d’Austerlitz, the Chic art fair. Anybody who says there’s not much new to see in Paris hasn’t been there lately.

The consensus was that the works on display at FIAC had risen in quality and that this was the best Paris art fair in years. Collectors took the cue. David Zwirner Gallery sold all of the Adel Abdessemed pieces it brought from New York, to French, Belgian, Swiss and American buyers. Daniel Templon Gallery, based in the resurgent Marais art district, said it had their best sales at the fair in 20 years. Such was the chorus of cash registers that word soon spread of FIAC’s perfect counterpoint to London’s giant Frieze Art Fair, the week before, and October Channel-hopping will likely be de rigueur next year.

I can personally vouch for the frenzy. Trying to get into the Grand Palais one day, armed with a press pass that allowed me to squeeze past a long unruly line of jostling attendees held back by guards, some guy swatted my back in protest. Once inside, the aisles and stands were packed with art-lovers, but the vast glass-and-steel canopy of the Palais, bathing everything in Parisian light, muted the usual claustrophobia of such events. One became a contented flâneur, in the best Paris-strolling tradition.

As for trends to be seen, the conclusion of many was that art was returning to the more classical (and sellable) mediums of painting and sculpture and away from more tenuous forms. But let some of the gallerists tell you themselves about this year’s FIAC. Below are videos of eight who spoke to us on the last day of the fair–about FIAC itself, some impressions of what was being shown, Paris as a revived locus of new art, and the artists they brought with them.

**********

I guess reading about this is as close as I’m going to get this year.

Ruth: Lucky you to be living in Paris, surrounded by all the things that I love.Did you attend?

Ayesha Is Only One Of Many

Good morning!

I wrote about Ayesha (Aisha)  about a month ago when her mutilated face graced the cover of Time Magazine. Now one month later Ayesha is on her way to recovery, at least physically.

‘Bibi’ Ayesha, Mutilated Afghan Woman, Receives ‘Enduring Heart Award’

After having her nose and ears cut off by her husband as a punishment handed down by Taliban elders, “Bibi” Ayesha was left for dead. The courageous young woman found her way to an American military hospital where she was treated for her wounds.

In August, Ayesha traveled to California to begin an intensive eight-month facial reconstruction.

This week, ABC News reports she was honored by the Grossman Burn Foundation with an “Enduring Heart Award.” California first lady Maria Shriver spoke at the award ceremony.

The Grossman Burn Foundation is the organization providing Ayesha’s reconstructive surgeries.

Ayesha attended the event wearing the prosthetic nose that has been made for her by California doctors.

Readers: This is definitely heading toward a happy ending, or should I say beginning (?) for Ayesha, and I am so happy for her. How could you not be? – her story was devastating. And as I’ve said before, devastating doesn’t even come close to describing this atrocity. Devastation to women happens daily; I’ve written about them here, and readers from all over the world have chimed in with their personal stories. Ayesha is only one of many.

So yes, Ayesha was a lucky one, if you can call having your ears and nose chopped off by your Husband and in-laws, and left for dead, lucky. I still can’t help but think of the many other women who suffer daily from abuse, mutilation, and slavery, not just in Afghanistan, but in Iran, Sudan, Congo, India…What about them?

What I would like to come out of this horrific story is more than just a nose job and an “Enduring Heart Award”. Don’t get me wrong, I am grateful for the California doctor who is graciously providing Ayesha’s reconstructive surgeries. And no doubt Ayesha deserves a reward for “enduring” such an experience, not to mention “enduring” the life she lead, before her husband pulled out a knife, first slicing off her ears, then her nose.

I don’t mean to keep driving the mutilation point home, but something has to happen to prevent this from ever happening again. As the article in my past blog write stated: This didn’t happen 10 years ago, when the Taliban ruled Afghanistan. It happened last year.

Last year. Are things getting worse for women or are we just able to access the atrocities easier because of the internet?

I try to remain HOPEful that things are getting better for women. But then I look at the huge numbers of girls who have contacted me wanting to be a girlz. It seems many are saying “Get me the fuck off of this planet. Anything is better than the life I have now. I am willing to risk dying in space for a cause, than dying at the hands of evil men.”

Do you blame them?

Comments? Thoughts? Blog this BABE. Speaking of girls…

Chin: You should be back? How about telling my readers what it was like for you out there?

Oh…and on a totally different subject….Hooray for the miners in Chile who are finally out and on their way home to their families!

Zen Lill: I don’t buy the alien bit. Aliens are such a small part of my blog. Unless one reads every day, you could miss them even being here. Wish they had a bigger presence here like they use to. Of course many peeps do read every day, but my blog is so much more than a hangout for the aliens. (Nothing against my friends the TAO – they know how I feel about them.:) Although I shouldn’t say my friends “never” talk about my blog…I do have conversations, but it is mostly me who broaches the subject. It is what it is, and I accept it. (most of the time) :P

On another note…what is going on in the zen life of Zen Lill? The universe is speaking that’s for sure. Now you just need to figure out what she’s saying. Sounds like you are in your own little random world looking for order. Good luck!  Such a bummer. I HOPE Your wallet is returned. The postal person will deliver it if the person who found it drops your wallet into a mailbox. Of course then you have to HOPE that the postal person is a decent person and delivers it to you.

Larry: That would be a kind person, and an easy thing to do, but there are many people who aren’t kind. And with identity theft raging, a wallet falling into the hands of the wrong person, would be seen as a gift from the Gods.

When I was living in LA, I mistakenly left my wallet on the hood of my car and drove away. It went flying into the street. I noticed it, so I pulled over. So did someone else. They pulled their car over at the same time as I did. I thought, “How nice; they’re going to rescue my wallet from the middle of the road and give it back to me.” Nope. They got out of their car as I was stepping out of mine, ran over to my wallet, and ran back to their car and drove away! I was shocked.

H: Cute.  :)

Anon: My pleasure. Well…give it up – what did you say to your wife in response?

Hi Helena: How are you? I just wanted to point out that you have been a loyal reader for a pretty long time now – how long has it been? I just wanted to say thanks.

And I liked the article you posted. Good observation about white women but I would like to think (and HOPE) it is changing. We are no longer in an era where women are predominantly stay-at-home housewives and mothers. And it seems that more and more younger women are either getting married later or opting out of marriage altogether.

Emily: Cute :) Nice to see you here again.

Peace out…

Lastly, greed over a great story is surfacing from my “loyal”(?) readers. With all this back and forth about who owns what, that appears on my blog, let me reiterate that all material posted on my blog becomes the sole property of my blog. If you want to reserve any proprietary rights don’t post it to my blog. I will prominently display this caveat on my blog from now on to remind those who may have forgotten this notice.

Gratefully your blog host,

michelle
