Wonderful Women Of The World

Good morning!

For years I have written or posted articles about the Congo and the daily atrocities that happen to women there. Congo is one of the worst places for a woman to live; rape is used as a weapon of war.

Unfortunately for many people all over the world, we do not think nor consider how we are a part of this. Yet, those who need to have the latest and greatest, constantly upgrading their technology toys, greatly contributes to the heinous and unimaginable lives of the Congolese women.

One girl, Denise Siwatula, decided it was her calling to help by representing and supporting women in her country.

In a Globalized World, Every Conflict Is Ours

We live in a globalized world. Our neighbors are no longer only the people who live next door but include all of those whose lives are connected to our own. It’s almost impossible to go a day without using or eating something that doesn’t have parts or labor from a country or a person halfway across the world.

The challenge is that while the technology that connects us continues to advance, our understanding of the ethics and virtues that should guide our relationships with our global neighbors has not always kept up.

No place on earth exemplifies the failure of our ethics to keep up with our globalized relationships and technological growth than the Democratic Republic of Congo. Home of the world’s deadliest conflict since World War II, over 5 million have died over the past dozen years and tens of thousands continue to die each month, according to a 2008 survey by the International Rescue Committee.

The stark ethical reality is that you and I have helped fund the criminals and armed militias that have been doing the killing.

Present in our cell phones, laptops and everyday electronics are minerals sold by warlords who use their profits to buy tools of death and destruction. The technology that allows me to call my son and check to make sure that he is safe is made from the same stuff that has been a death sentence for the sons of other fathers in the Congo.

Conflicts and wars in far off countries can often be invisible. The ongoing deaths rarely make the front page of our newspapers or lead on the nightly news. Still, there are stories of both tragedy and triumph that need to be told.

I Am Congo is a new video series released by the Enough Project that tells the stories of five everyday people, from the Congo, working to make their country a better and safer place. In these videos we see the strength and resilience of an artist, activist, community builder, conservationist and human rights lawyer who are re-building their nation from the bottom up.

As a Christian, I was especially inspired by the story of Denise. She is a human rights lawyer who helps victims of rape seek justice and recover from their injuries and trauma. She talks about her personal faith, and time at Church, as the moments when she is renewed and finds the hope to continue fighting. In spite of all the challenges, Denise refuses to give up. “If we just sat with crossed arms what would happen then?” she says in the video.

Faith matters in the lives and work of many of those living in the Congo. In the United States, the faith community has a powerful voice to raise awareness and build political will on issues that could otherwise be marginalized.

Inspired by this project from Enough, Sojourners has created a discussion guide, Faith Leads to Hope, that accompanies the videos for people of faith to think about and engage the questions of how we can all be better global neighbors.

The stories told in I Am Congo are a testament to the hope that still grows even in areas of conflict. They are an introduction to people that many of us may never meet but we are still connected to. It is through learning of the work that we are reminded of the great promise of faith, that a light still shines in the darkness and the darkness shall not overcome it.

Permission To Abuse Women

Social Butterfly: This was on my radar to post today (Great minds think alike) and since you mentioned it the other day (Thank you), and this is a women’s blog, I found it important to repost for all the girls out there.

Pat Robertson, Televangelist, Encourages Man To Become Muslim So He Can Beat His Wife

Once again, Pat Robertson has said something ridiculously offensive and cruel.

Past targets have included gays, feminists and pagans, atheists, people with Alzheimer’s, adoptive parents, Haitians and people who don’t pray enough. This time, the televangelist focused his ire on wives who fail to properly obey their husbands.

On Monday’s broadcast of Robertson’s television show “The 700 Club,” he answered a question from a viewer named Michael about how to repair his marriage to a woman who “has no respect for me as the head of the house.”

Robertson’s response: “Well, you could become a Muslim and you could beat her.”

Bizarrely, this comment elicited laughter from Robertson’s co-host, Terry Meeuwsen.

Unfortunately, Robertson didn’t stop there.

“I don’t think we condone wife-beating these days but something has got to be done to make her.”

He also called the woman a “rebellious child” who doesn’t want to “submit to any authority.” However, since the Scripture doesn’t allow for divorce, Robertson urged the husband to “move to Saudi Arabia,” where, ostensibly, beating the woman would be permissible.

According to Right Wing Watch, the very same clip was edited when posted on the Christian Broadcast Network’s website in order to remove the offensive rhetoric.

And if you’re tempted to write off Robertson as just a fringe character, know this: He spent last weekend hanging out with Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, NBC News reported.

9/11 Revisited

In light of the 11 year anniversary of 9/11 yesterday. Perhaps you have already read. If not, this is worthy of a read:

The Deafness Before the Storm

IT was perhaps the most famous presidential briefing in history.

On Aug. 6, 2001, President George W. Bush received a classified review of the threats posed by Osama bin Laden and his terrorist network, Al Qaeda. That morning’s “presidential daily brief” — the top-secret document prepared by America’s intelligence agencies — featured the now-infamous heading: “Bin Laden Determined to Strike in U.S.” A few weeks later, on 9/11, Al Qaeda accomplished that goal.

On April 10, 2004, the Bush White House declassified that daily brief — and only that daily brief — in response to pressure from the 9/11 Commission, which was investigating the events leading to the attack. Administration officials dismissed the document’s significance, saying that, despite the jaw-dropping headline, it was only an assessment of Al Qaeda’s history, not a warning of the impending attack. While some critics considered that claim absurd, a close reading of the brief showed that the argument had some validity.

That is, unless it was read in conjunction with the daily briefs preceding Aug. 6, the ones the Bush administration would not release. While those documents are still not public, I have read excerpts from many of them, along with other recently declassified records, and come to an inescapable conclusion: the administration’s reaction to what Mr. Bush was told in the weeks before that infamous briefing reflected significantly more negligence than has been disclosed. In other words, the Aug. 6 document, for all of the controversy it provoked, is not nearly as shocking as the briefs that came before it.

The direct warnings to Mr. Bush about the possibility of a Qaeda attack began in the spring of 2001. By May 1, the Central Intelligence Agency told the White House of a report that “a group presently in the United States” was planning a terrorist operation. Weeks later, on June 22, the daily brief reported that Qaeda strikes could be “imminent,” although intelligence suggested the time frame was flexible.

But some in the administration considered the warning to be just bluster. An intelligence official and a member of the Bush administration both told me in interviews that the neoconservative leaders who had recently assumed power at the Pentagon were warning the White House that the C.I.A. had been fooled; according to this theory, Bin Laden was merely pretending to be planning an attack to distract the administration from Saddam Hussein, whom the neoconservatives saw as a greater threat. Intelligence officials, these sources said, protested that the idea of Bin Laden, an Islamic fundamentalist, conspiring with Mr. Hussein, an Iraqi secularist, was ridiculous, but the neoconservatives’ suspicions were nevertheless carrying the day.

In response, the C.I.A. prepared an analysis that all but pleaded with the White House to accept that the danger from Bin Laden was real.

“The U.S. is not the target of a disinformation campaign by Usama Bin Laden,” the daily brief of June 29 read, using the government’s transliteration of Bin Laden’s first name. Going on for more than a page, the document recited much of the evidence, including an interview that month with a Middle Eastern journalist in which Bin Laden aides warned of a coming attack, as well as competitive pressures that the terrorist leader was feeling, given the number of Islamists being recruited for the separatist Russian region of Chechnya.

And the C.I.A. repeated the warnings in the briefs that followed. Operatives connected to Bin Laden, one reported on June 29, expected the planned near-term attacks to have “dramatic consequences,” including major casualties. On July 1, the brief stated that the operation had been delayed, but “will occur soon.” Some of the briefs again reminded Mr. Bush that the attack timing was flexible, and that, despite any perceived delay, the planned assault was on track.

Yet, the White House failed to take significant action. Officials at the Counterterrorism Center of the C.I.A. grew apoplectic. On July 9, at a meeting of the counterterrorism group, one official suggested that the staff put in for a transfer so that somebody else would be responsible when the attack took place, two people who were there told me in interviews. The suggestion was batted down, they said, because there would be no time to train anyone else.

That same day in Chechnya, according to intelligence I reviewed, Ibn Al-Khattab, an extremist who was known for his brutality and his links to Al Qaeda, told his followers that there would soon be very big news. Within 48 hours, an intelligence official told me, that information was conveyed to the White House, providing more data supporting the C.I.A.’s warnings. Still, the alarm bells didn’t sound.

On July 24, Mr. Bush was notified that the attack was still being readied, but that it had been postponed, perhaps by a few months. But the president did not feel the briefings on potential attacks were sufficient, one intelligence official told me, and instead asked for a broader analysis on Al Qaeda, its aspirations and its history. In response, the C.I.A. set to work on the Aug. 6 brief.

In the aftermath of 9/11, Bush officials attempted to deflect criticism that they had ignored C.I.A. warnings by saying they had not been told when and where the attack would occur. That is true, as far as it goes, but it misses the point. Throughout that summer, there were events that might have exposed the plans, had the government been on high alert. Indeed, even as the Aug. 6 brief was being prepared, Mohamed al-Kahtani, a Saudi believed to have been assigned a role in the 9/11 attacks, was stopped at an airport in Orlando, Fla., by a suspicious customs agent and sent back overseas on Aug. 4. Two weeks later, another co-conspirator, Zacarias Moussaoui, was arrested on immigration charges in Minnesota after arousing suspicions at a flight school. But the dots were not connected, and Washington did not react.

Could the 9/11 attack have been stopped, had the Bush team reacted with urgency to the warnings contained in all of those daily briefs? We can’t ever know. And that may be the most agonizing reality of all.

Harold: Your comment piqued my interest so I looked it up. it is amazing to me that people in office can say something like this and not much is done about it, yet. The fact that governors control the voting process has been a concern of mine, especially since the last November mid term elections when we lost much of our control. Those who control governorship control the voting process. And if they aren’t successful through stealing the votes, claiming voter fraud,(as if it exists) then as Mike, TM, noted they will contest the votes via BAPF STARK.

Pregnancy From Rape Similar To ‘Having A Baby Out Of Wedlock’

Good morning!

I know I keep bringing up this subject. But what can I say, it is a constant reminder that we are close to losing our rights unless we women take strong action and support each other.

Another GOP candidate, Tom Smith, downplays the seriousness of rape. When I read comments such as the one below, it just really irks me. I am so tired of men trying to control women’s bodies, and then make light of rape, acting as if it is no big deal, no major violation, that we can wish away the pregnancy..and if not, just deal with it and have the baby.

I mean really there is no difference…pregnancy from rape is similar to having a baby out of wedlock, right? It’s so easy for a man to say such crap off the top of his head because he doesn’t have to worry about being raped, nor ever worry about ever getting pregnant and having to decide what to do, or worry about somebody telling him what to do, controlling his choices. And please don’t write me and say, “Men get raped too”. You know my views on that.

If men are not trying to control what we do with our bodies, the choices that we want to make, then they are trying to take control of our bodies, by sexually assaulting and raping us.

Enough already.

Tom Smith, GOP Senate Candidate: Pregnancy From Rape Similar To ‘Having A Baby Out Of Wedlock‘

Trying to distance himself from the “legitimate rape” comment that Rep. Todd Akin (R-Mo.) made last week, Pennsylvania Senate candidate Tom Smith (R) stirred up further controversy by comparing a pregnancy caused by rape to “having a baby out of wedlock.”

Smith said Monday at the Pennsylvania Press Club that although he condemns Akin’s comment, he agrees with Akin that abortion should be banned without any exceptions, including for rape and incest victims. Pressed by a reporter on how he would handle a daughter or granddaughter becoming pregnant as a result of rape, Smith said he had already “lived something similar to that” in his family.

“She chose life, and I commend her for that,” he said. “She knew my views. But, fortunately for me, I didn’t have to … she chose the way I thought. Don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t rape.”

When a reporter asked Smith to clarify what kind of situation was similar to becoming pregnant from rape, the candidate responded, “Having a baby out of wedlock.”

He added, “Put yourself in a father’s position. Yes, it is similar.”

Smith’s comment comes at an inconvenient time for Republicans, who have been scrambling to distract voters from the firestorm of controversy over Akin’s comment last week. Addressing the subject of an abortion exception for rape victims, Akin said that victims of “legitimate rape” rarely become pregnant because “the female body has ways to shut that whole thing down.”

Smith, who is challenging incumbent Sen. Bob Casey (D-Pa.) in the November election, told reporters that he does not agree with Akin’s remark at all. “He should have never said anything like that,” Smith said.

UPDATE: 8:45 p.m. –

Megan Piwowar, a spokeswoman for Smith, clarified on Monday evening that the candidate’s comments were misunderstood and that the “out of wedlock” pregnancy in his family was not his daughter’s.

“Tom Smith is committed to protecting the sanctity of life and believes it begins at conception,” she said in a statement. “While his answers to some of the questions he faced at the Pennsylvania Press club may have been less than artful, at no time did he draw the comparison that some have inferred. When questioned if he was drawing that comparison, Tom’s answer was clear, ‘no, no, no.’ Tom was speaking to the difficult decision faced by his family, not the nature of his daughters conception.”

Readers: I know that I keep saying this but I just can’t help it. I especially say this to women who can’t seem to get it, “The choices you make over your body are your choices. Vote to have a choice. Do what you want to do with your body and let me do what I want to do with mine. You don’t believe in abortion? Fine. Have all the babies you want. But allow me to make my own choices over my own body. The men aren’t going to change. Be smart, take control – Support women in their right to choose. If we don’t do it now we may never have another opportunity.”

This election year, no doubt, is the most important election, in my opinion, to date. Not only for women but for this country and the world. If you think anything different, you are in for a rude awakening.

Last week, Paul Ryan gave an interview in which, defending his position that there should be no excuses for abortion, he referred to rape as a “method of conception.”

Wow, right? Talk about a benign euphemism. Rape –RAPE! – is now a “method of conception.” You know, like love-making, just without the love.

There could be no greater testament to the utter abdication of responsibility by what passes for a “news” media in America in 2012 than that, despite the grotesquerie of this cavalierly callous comment, chances are better than good that this is the first you’re hearing of it.

Here, watch it – and try to figure out why this has gotten NO MAINSTREAM MEDIA play (not even here at the Huffington Post) despite it being, to my mind, a far more offensive remark than Todd Akin’s imbecilic blurt of last weekend. What, are we tired of stupid remarks about rape now, so Ryan gets a free pass?

Given the demands for Akin’s resignation from a mere Senate race when his musings on “legitimate rape” were publicized, what do you imagine the reaction would be if people were as familiar with VP wannabe Ryan’s stunning statement? Might there be a cacophony of outrage? Might there be calls for his resignation from the ticket? Might there be a focus on how fundamentally oblivious these people who would make our laws are to not just women’s but humans’ rights and dignity? Sure, there might, but then of course people would have to have heard about it.

According to the man who would be the proverbial heartbeat away from the White House, and who in any event would — given Romney’s utter hollowness — have an inordinate influence on the judicial appointments that will determine how much freedom our children get to live under, RAPE = “METHOD OF CONCEPTION.” And yet, unless you’re a frequenter of one of a dozen or so lefty blogs — or my friend on Facebook — you probably knew nothing about it.

I truly despair for the country my 14-year-old daughter is inheriting. That a remark this intensely revealing of the danger posed by this ticket can go basically unreported is as nauseating to me as the quote itself.

Readers: Ryan is a sick man. Girls…girls girls…this is your time to switch party lines, and vote in support of women – the Romney/Ryan ticket cares less about women, more than you want to know or discover. Come on over before it is too late.
