‘Just noticing’…

…that with all that was on my mind yesterday, I realized I was not up to date on the Sudan elections.

Yesterday, I encouraged all of you to send a letter to Hillary Clinton encouraging her to continue to fight for the people of Sudan supporting the fact that the elections were not free and fair. When I went to send my letter, I realized that I missed the inportant fact the US had already rejected Bashir’s victory and was already moving forward to ensure our government holds all parties in Sudan accountable for fulfilling their obligations to the Sudanese people. I guess I was a little behind on the times, which I am sure many of you noticed. My apologies.

Here’s the latest just in case you, like me, fell behind:

Despite international demands for free and fair elections, indicted war criminal Omar al-Bashir is preparing to claim victory in what you and I both know was a rigged vote.

If Bashir’s “victory” is recognized by the international community, it will only embolden the regime in Khartoum and deal a serious blow to the peace process.

You raised your voice with 70,000 other activists, andAssistant Secretary of State P.J. Crowley has already declared that “this was not a free and fair election,” adding that, “to the extent that the Government of Sudan was looking for redemption or legitimacy in what happened here, they will get none of it.”

Rejecting the results of this fraudulent vote is an important first step, but now it’s time to hold the responsible parties accountable.

Send a message to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and ask her to stand up to the Sudanese regime and demand they meet their obligations under the Comprehensive Peace Agreement.

While much of the world is prepared to accept this sham election and just move on, we must not abandon the people of Sudan who have put themselves at great personal risk to stand up for democracy and basic freedoms.

We must continue to raise our voices for all of those who did not have a chance to speak out during this fraudulent election. For the university student who was harassed and murdered after speaking out against the government. For the election observers who were kidnapped and beaten. For the thousands of Darfuris who continue to live in squalid camps and didn’t have the opportunity to participate. For them, we must continue to insist that the international community pressure the government in Khartoum to fulfill its obligation under the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) to provide for a democratic transformation of the country.

Please, urge Secretary Clinton to support real democracy and human rights by holding the parties in Sudan accountable and ensuring that they live up to their obligations under the CPA.

These elections should have been the first chance in more than two decades for millions of Sudanese to freely choose their leaders. Instead, the Sudanese government ensured that a lack of political freedoms and a continued crisis in Darfur eliminated that opportunity.

If the government of Sudan continues to inhibit basic political rights and freedoms, the stage will be set for widespread violence during the referendum on southern succession. If civil war is to be avoided, both the governments of North and South Sudan must recommit themselves to protecting personal liberty and freedom in order for the referendum to be credible. These are not just lofty ideals – they are obligations that both parties agreed upon in the CPA. As a guarantor of the CPA, it is the responsibility of the United States to hold those who presided over fraudulent elections accountable and take all steps to further democracy in Sudan and protect the integrity of the 2011 referendum.

We must not remain silent. Send Secretary Clinton a message today and speak out for the people of Sudan.

Not judging…’Just noticing’, I am a human; I make mistakes. :)

On a more local note, just a little reminder, today is the day of camp OFA. I’m excited to learn and be a part of it. Here’s your chance to do something more too.

As we continue fighting for the President’s agenda and gear up for the elections in the fall, we need to make sure we’re all ready to organize as effectively as possible.

We’re holding Camp OFA training sessions across the country, to make sure that OFA supporters like you have the skills you’ll need to make it happen. You’ll hear from local community organizers, volunteers, and staff on the best ways to organize local events and build neighborhood teams, how to make the case for the President’s agenda for change, and what OFA is planning to do in the months ahead.

To find a camp near you click here.

Readers: Join me – let’s ensure our success in November and beyond. If you’re in my neighborhood, I’ll look forward to seeing you!

Just Noticing’: Observations Of A Blogger

Good morning.

I’m going to be brief today. So many things happening in our world that are up for discussion. From the monster smoke cloud still obstructing our flights – thanks to Ori and his gang in response to those who refuse to cooperate, to John Paulson, the mastermind designer(?) behind the nasty “Bet against the American dream’ CDO, to the tea baggers still talking the same same talk of wanting their country back.

I bring up the latter only because I finally got to the heart of what it means when they say they want their country back thanks to watching Bill Maher’s roundtable from last Friday.

Quote: “We want our country back!”

Coded language for: (Let’s not say they’re racist) Let’s say: “They’re nostalgic for an era when blacks were invisible.” (Thanks Bill)

Translation: I have no problem saying it: “They’re racist.”

On another note and honoring today’s topic, I’ll steal an observation from Bill that I liked:

‘Just noticing’…

  • Being well educated is very different from being well informed.

Click here is you want to watch the roundtable segment.

Readers: Any observations you want to add? Or as usual feel free to jump into any topic at hand or something entirely different. The forum is now open :P

Mike: Good point. And ‘Just noticing’ the line in your article: “The law should control the judge, and not the other way around.” Uh huh and that is how the Supreme Court has been run all of these years? I don’t think so from what we have been told. Time to weed out the bought and paid for old, and bring in the new; fresh blood is needed.

Lastly, greed over a great story is surfacing from my ‘loyal’(?) readers. ‘Just Noticing’: Observations Of A Blogger

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 11th April 2010

Today’s write of ‘just noticing’ is going to be very personal.

It didn’t dawn on me till a little over a week ago that I was not being friendly with life. And ‘just noticing’ that over the past few weeks, and more likely the past few months, I have been treating my life, not as a friend, but as a fiend, an enemy.

Spiritually I have sunken to depths that I didn’t think I would ever allow myself to reach, but then I have been living through ego and letting my ego be the boss of my life. And it’s not surprising when how the ego is in control, I feel totally out of control. The ego is not me…not my true self therefore, the feelings of being out of control of my life, support the fact that I am not in control – the ego is.

This isn’t the first time my ego has been in control – to some greater or lesser degree it always has. Most unenlightened humans live through the form of ego and not self. And I realized that it takes a continual awareness of the presence of ego…a conscious effort to be present, when the ego at every opportunity, strives to shun the present moment, and live and feed on the drama from the identifiable past and the anticipated future, in order to quiet and diminish the ego. The self can then shine. This is called ‘enlightenment’.

Although I am aware of this, I somehow forgot over the past year or so. I hate to admit that my ego has been in control, not always but certainly a lot…but hey, it is what it is. And admitting it, and recognizing when it is, gives it less power so that I can create the space to understand just where I have been operating from, and free myself from its hold.

Let me start from the beginning. It all started a little over a year ago when I allowed the ego to make the present moment not important. All I thought about was the future, any moment but the NOW. I made the present moment ‘a means to an end’, and all I wanted to do was fast forward out of the NOW and into the future. It doesn’t matter the reason. All that mattered was that I didn’t want to be where I was and getting to the future was my goal.

At the time, my life felt okay, knowing that what I wanted seemed so close. I was willing to live and be in my life knowing that the future I desired was near. But as I got closer to the future, and my life remained the same, the NOW that felt okay, no longer felt okay. The ego is addicted to drama and unhappiness. And negative thoughts fed and perpetuated the unhappiness inside of me. My ego gained strength, and living off of my negative thoughts, gained momentum as a powerful voice in my head, running my thoughts.

Then I began to see my life as an ‘obstacle’. My life was a problem that was in the way of my future. And I began to notice that everywhere I turned, my ego presented me with more problems, more obstacles. I became impatient and frustrated because my life felt out of control. Problem after problem kept arising, and the more upset I became, the more my ego lashed out, loving every dramatic moment and wanting more.

My ego, desperate to thrive by living off of my negative thoughts, peaked a few months ago. It was then that I made my life, my enemy. I found myself literally unable to bear my life, not to mention accepting myself. I was not only ‘just noticing’ but I was also ‘judging’. I was living in the past and blaming all that I could on anybody and anything that prevented me from getting what I wanted, including myself and any important decisions that I had made in my past that led me to where I am at today. It has not been a joyful experience but one that I evidently brought upon myself through thought.

It was a very dark place for me to be, and the worst part of it was that I felt very alone, with all of my negative thoughts. My thoughts created my emotions that ran the gamut of fear and anxiety, to regret, and ended deep in anger. And anger is where I have been biding my time until my desired future was attained. And through this, as I attacked my enemy, my life, my life retaliated as any enemy would. It was as if my life was saying, “You want war? You’ve got it.”

It wasn’t until I had a quiet moment and with the help of my two most inspiring books (Creative Visualization and A New Earth), was I able to see that I was living in a very destructive manner and that my ego had moved in permanently and taken over.

One morning I picked up the book ‘A New Earth’ and just opened it. No surprise, the page that I opened to was the exact page that I needed to read – the chapter: The Ego and The Present Moment. (page 200) It wasn’t until I read that chapter that I realized that I was not going with the flow of life…that I was struggling and fighting it…that I was resisting what is and making my life an enemy. I was blaming the past and living in the future. The present moment, the NOW, had no purpose.

Funny how I have read this book two times before and as I began to read it again, I felt like I was reading it for the first time. Now I know why Oprah read this book seven times. It takes quite a few times for information to really sink in and stick. So I began to read it over again…

I then chose to look at life differently, get okay with the present moment and be friendly with life. It was when I consciously decided to make my life my friend, by accepting the present moment, that things began to change, and my negative thoughts and emotions no longer lived with me permanently waiting in a dormant state for the perfect moment or the right trigger to show face. I have consciously had to make this decision daily, of making life my friend, in order to not regress and be prisoner to my ego again.

So I ask the questions daily: What is my relationship with life, with the present moment? Am I making life my friend? And every day, I will continue to ask those questions until making life my friend becomes my natural state. I am not there yet. And the only way to make life my friend is to leave the past and future alone and live in the present moment, the NOW, for it is all that I have. The past is done and the future has not arrived yet.

That is not to say that one cannot have future goals, desires, needs. On the contrary, one can still set goals creating what one wants in life and yet, be here, in the NOW, letting go of attachments and desires. How one does that is by simply letting go and going with the flow of life.

Here is a little story from the book Creative Visualization that I think explains it metaphorically perfect:

Let us imagine that life is a river. Most people are clinging to the bank, afraid to let go and risk being carried along by the current of the river. At a certain point each person must be willing to simply let go, and trust the river to carry him or her along safely. At this point he learns to ‘go with the flow’, and it feels wonderful.

Once he has gotten used to being in the flow of the river, he can begin to look ahead and guide his own course onward, deciding where the course looks best, steering his way around boulders and snags, and choosing which of the many channels and branches of the river he prefers to follow, all the while still ‘going with the flow’.

I love this analogy. It shows how one can truly enjoy the here and NOW, flowing with life and with what is, while still consciously guiding one’s life toward their goals, and by taking responsibility for creating their own lives.

This is also not to say that by accepting what is one can use going with the flow as an excuse to be complacent. The Serenity Prayer expresses this perfectly:

God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference.

Why am I telling you this? Well, partially because making my personal state of being public makes it feel like I’m not so alone in this. I know there are readers out there who can relate to some degree or another. I know I am not alone when it comes to the ego. Perhaps me speaking about my challenges here will speak to you somewhere in your subconscious and you will have an ‘aha’ moment that inspires you to learn more. Whether I hear about it from you or not is not important. However my ego would love to make it important, of course :). I also bring it up because I feel that my state of being is a reflection of the world, and the world is also a reflection of my state of being. Ergo, It is my responsibility to be friendly with life, and have that reflect out into the world.

So, if any of what I have written resonates with you at all, or if you just don’t get it, and you’re wanting to know more, I do suggest picking up these two books:

Creative Visualization by Shakti Gawain. I first read this 25 years ago and it is still a favorite, and a very easy read. Besides being a fantastic book on creating what you want through visualization, if you are into meditating, there are some very good meditations throughout the book.

A New Earth by Eckhart Tolle. I first started reading this about 2 years ago and it continues to inspire me. I’ve blogged about Tolle’s teachings several times here, but I have barely scratched the surface. These books are my modern bibles that give me a quick jolt into the present moment should I feel myself drifting to the past or future in a destructive way. Hence, I bring them with me everywhere..

It has been painful being a person who tends to rethink my past over and over, and push for the future, thanks to my drama seeking ego. So for me to stay present is a challenge, but I am committed to it.  And I am grateful for the lessons along the way. Remember, being patient is key, especially in regards to yourself. So be patient with yourself. Self growth is a conscious effort that is continual throughout life.

Peace out.

‘Just noticing’…

  • …that there is so much upset over Obama’s decision to consider offshore drilling.

I woke up around 3:00 am this morning with lots on my mind. And one thing that kept coming up was Obama’s decision to do what he said he wouldn’t do during his campaigning: Offshore drilling. When I was first informed of this the other day, I asked, “Hmm…is that a bad thing?” From the answer I received it was evident that it was upsetting to the person who informed me.

And as I began to listen to others, I discovered that many more were upset over his decision too. One person even said Obama’s palm was being greased. I found it interesting that people reacted in the same same knee-jerk jump-to-conclusion reactions that they would with any past president that switched his views on a particular issue. That people assumed that he was like other politicians who say one thing during their campaigning, and then do the opposite once they get elected.

But I thought differently. I was not so quick to judge. Obama is not like any past president or typical of any politician. And I have no doubt that he is doing what he feels is best for our country and the American people.

Announcing his reversal, Obama said: “This is not a decision that I’ve made lightly.” (In regards to offshore drilling)

So I began to ask myself questions, as I believe the quality of my life is directed by the quality of the questions that I ask. And I ask lots of questions :)

  • Why would Obama switch positions on such a delicate issue?”
  • Could he perhaps be privy to information that we have yet to discover?
  • If Obama is now taking a different stance than he did while he was campaigning, could there be a very good and valid reason for this decision?
  • Does Obama seem like the type of man who would accept graft?
  • Is Obama an indecisive man…wishy washy so to speak?

As I lay awake this early morning, I thought about Obama. I thought about the type of person that Obama is…his values, his integrity, his caring for the well-being of all Americans; his country. I don’t think his hand is out to be greased, his actions different from his words, nor do I think he is wishy washy.

I trust Obama. I trust him more than I have trusted any past president. I trust he is sincere – So many politicians are liars and hypocrites. Obama isn’t. I trust that he truly is a president of the people…

Based on his past actions, and we all know that actions speak louder than words, I trust he will do the right thing and make the right decisions.  I trust that if he was once against offshore drilling and now he has changed his view on the issue, that there must be good reason.

Not judging, ‘Just noticing‘…

Readers: Thoughts? Comments? You know what to do – blog me.

And in the spirit of Easter, I will echo Obama’s words: “While we worship in different ways,” the president said, “we also remember the shared spirit of humanity that inhabits us all — Jews and Christians, Muslims and Hindus, believers and nonbelievers alike.”

“As Easter begins and Passover comes to a close,” he said, “let us remain ever mindful of the unity of purpose, the common bond, the love of you and of me, for which they sacrificed all they had; and for which so many others have sacrificed so much.”

Happy Easter!

Lastly, greed over a great story is surfacing from my ‘loyal’(?) readers. With all this back and forth about who owns what, that appears on my blog, let me reiterate that all material posted on my blog becomes the sole property of my blog. If you want to reserve any proprietary rights don’t post it to my blog. I will prominently display this caveat on my blog from now on to remind those who may have forgotten this notice.

‘Just Noticing’: Observations Of A Blogger

  • Just noticing…that it seems that some of my readers are afraid to post to my blog.

What’s up with that? I will remind them once again that it is easy. They can post anything under an alias or without any name in the name block, and remain completely anonymous.

That being said, I will try to accommodate for a period.  So you know who you are, here is your article that you e’d me.:  ”The Truth…” This is where I start all my talks. I like to know that  you can hold your own in the crucible of the world opinion.

Truth Has Fallen and Taken Liberty With It

By PAUL CRAIG ROBERTS

There was a time when the pen was mightier than the sword. That was a time when people believed in truth and regarded truth as an independent power and not as an auxiliary for government, class, race, ideological, personal, or financial interest.

Today Americans are ruled by propaganda. Americans have little regard for truth, little access to it, and little ability to recognize it.

Truth is an unwelcome entity. It is disturbing. It is off limits. Those who speak it run the risk of being branded “anti-American,” “anti-semite” or “conspiracy theorist.”

Truth is an inconvenience for government and for the interest groups whose campaign contributions control government.

Truth is an inconvenience for prosecutors who want convictions, not the discovery of innocence or guilt.

Truth is inconvenient for ideologues.

Today many whose goal once was the discovery of truth are now paid handsomely to hide it. “Free market economists” are paid to sell offshoring to the American people. High-productivity, high value-added American jobs are denigrated as dirty, old industrial jobs. Relicts from long ago, we are best shed of them. Their place has been taken by “the New Economy,” a mythical economy that allegedly consists of high-tech white collar jobs in which Americans innovate and finance activities that occur offshore. All Americans need in order to participate in this “new economy” are finance degrees from Ivy League universities, and then they will work on Wall Street at million dollar jobs.

Economists who were once respectable took money to contribute to this myth of “the New Economy.”

And not only economists sell their souls for filthy lucre. Recently we have had reports of medical doctors who, for money, have published in peer-reviewed journals concocted “studies” that hype this or that new medicine produced by pharmaceutical companies that paid for the “studies.”

The Council of Europe is investigating the drug companies’ role in hyping a false swine flu pandemic in order to gain billions of dollars in sales of the vaccine.

The media helped the US military hype its recent Marja offensive in Afghanistan, describing Marja as a city of 80,000 under Taliban control. It turns out that Marja is not urban but a collection of village farms.

And there is the global warming scandal, in which  NGOs. the UN, and the nuclear industry colluded in concocting  a doomsday scenario in order to create profit in pollution.

Wherever one looks, truth has fallen to money.

Wherever money is insufficient to bury the truth, ignorance, propaganda, and short memories finish the job.

I remember when, following CIA director William Colby’s testimony before the Church Committee in the mid-1970s, presidents Gerald Ford and Ronald Reagan issued executive orders preventing the CIA and U.S. black-op groups from assassinating foreign leaders.  In 2010 the US Congress was told by Dennis Blair, head of national intelligence, that the US now assassinates its own citizens in addition to foreign leaders.

When Blair told the House Intelligence Committee that US citizens no longer needed to be arrested, charged, tried, and convicted of a capital crime, just murdered on suspicion  alone of being a “threat,” he wasn’t impeached. No investigation pursued. Nothing happened. There was no Church Committee. In the mid-1970s the CIA got into trouble for plots to kill Castro. Today it is American citizens who are on the hit list. Whatever objections there might be don’t carry any weight. No one in government is in any trouble over the assassination of U.S. citizens by the U.S. government.

As an economist, I am astonished that the American economics profession has no awareness whatsoever that the U.S. economy has been destroyed by the offshoring of U.S. GDP to overseas countries. U.S. corporations, in pursuit of absolute advantage or lowest labor costs and maximum CEO “performance bonuses,” have moved the production of goods and services marketed to Americans to China, India, and elsewhere abroad. When I read economists describe offshoring as free trade based on comparative advantage, I realize that there is no intelligence or integrity in the American economics profession.

Intelligence and integrity have been purchased by money. The transnational or global U.S. corporations pay multi-million dollar compensation packages to top managers, who achieve these “performance awards” by replacing U.S. labor with foreign labor. While Washington worries about “the Muslim threat,” Wall Street, U.S. corporations and “free market” shills destroy the U.S. economy and the prospects of tens of millions of Americans.

Americans, or most of them, have proved to be putty in the hands of the police state.

Americans have bought into the government’s claim that security requires the suspension of civil liberties and accountable government. Astonishingly, Americans, or most of them, believe that civil liberties, such as habeas corpus and due process, protect “terrorists,” and not themselves. Many also believe that the Constitution is a tired old document that prevents government from exercising the kind of police state powers necessary to keep Americans safe and free.

Most Americans are unlikely to hear from anyone who would tell them any different.

I was associate editor and columnist for the Wall Street Journal. I was Business Week’s first outside columnist, a position I held for 15 years. I was columnist for a decade for Scripps Howard News Service, carried in 300 newspapers. I was a columnist for the Washington Times and for newspapers in France and Italy and for a magazine in Germany. I was a contributor to the New York Times and a regular feature in the Los Angeles Times. Today I cannot publish in, or appear on, the American “mainstream media.”

For the last six years I have been banned from the “mainstream media.” My last column in the New York Times appeared in January, 2004, coauthored with Democratic U.S. Senator Charles Schumer representing New York. We addressed the offshoring of U.S. jobs. Our op-ed article produced a conference at the Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C. and live coverage by C-Span. A debate was launched. No such thing could happen today.

For years I was a mainstay at the Washington Times, producing credibility for the Moony newspaper as a Business Week columnist, former Wall Street Journal editor, and former Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Treasury. But when I began criticizing Bush’s wars of aggression, the order came down to Mary Lou Forbes to cancel my column.

The American corporate media does not serve the truth.  It serves the government and the interest groups that empower the government.

America’s fate was sealed when the public and the anti-war movement bought the government’s 9/11 conspiracy theory. The government’s account of 9/11 is contradicted by much evidence. Nevertheless, this defining event of our time, which has launched the US on interminable wars of aggression and a domestic police state, is a taboo topic for investigation in the media. It is pointless to complain of war and a police state when one accepts the premise upon which they are based.

These trillion dollar wars have created financing problems for Washington’s deficits and threaten the U.S. dollar’s role as world reserve currency. The wars and the pressure that the budget deficits put on the dollar’s value have put Social Security and Medicare on the chopping block. Former Goldman Sachs chairman and U.S. Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson is after these protections for the elderly. Fed chairman Bernanke is also after them. The Republicans are after them as well. These protections are called “entitlements” as if they are some sort of welfare that people have not paid for in payroll taxes all their working lives.

With over 21 per cent unemployment as measured by the methodology of 1980, with American jobs, GDP, and technology having been given to China and India, with war being Washington’s greatest commitment, with the dollar over-burdened with debt, with civil liberty sacrificed to the “war on terror,” the liberty and prosperity of the American people have been thrown into the trash bin of history.

The militarism of the U.S. and Israeli states, and Wall Street and corporate greed, will now run their course. As the pen is censored and its might extinguished, I am signing off.

Paul Craig Roberts was an editor of the Wall Street Journal and an Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Treasury.  His latest book, HOW THE ECONOMY WAS LOST, has just been published by CounterPunch/AK Press. He can be reached at: PaulCraigRoberts@yahoo.com

Readers: Only one ‘just noticing’ today, but nonetheless this article is filled with interesting observations. Any comments or any to add? Blog me.

Po: I missed your comment yesterday. Thank you, but I do not know how much I am helping; I hope more than I think. Our country can be just as corrupt, only our politicians and those in power do it covertly. Our lives, unlike yours, are not threatened at the polls. No, we peacefully punch our vote, elections are surreptitiously stolen, and our lives are threatened through legislation. Thankfully our past elections were not the status quo, and things are looking up for the American people.

And hopefully your election in the coming weeks will not be either. I hear Anonz is there – I believe he has a personal interest in smashing the status quo. I have a feeling he will know best what to do. I wish only a better future for you, and the rest of the people of Darfur. Be safe.

Mike: The tea baggers. But I know you knew that. :)
