A Good Day For Dolphins

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 5th September 2009

Good Morning! I hope everyone is enjoying the 3-day holiday!

More than a few days ago I wrote about the documentary ‘The Cove’.  Well…just a few days ago the dophin slaughter was suspended. This is good news. Not to say they won’t start up again, but at least this is a start. See…we canhave an affect onthe world. All it takes is a little dedication from a few people. Think what we can do in collective numbers. Inspiring yes?

Dolphin Slaughter in Taiji’s ‘Cove’ Suspended

Written by Bryan Nelson

Published on September 1st, 2009

Source: EcoWorldly

Ric O’Barry reports that the horrific annual dolphin slaughter in Taiji has been suspended due to publicity from the film, The Cove.

September 1st usually marks the first day of the year for the brutal killings, but for the first time the Japanese media has arrived in Taiji en masse, causing the local fishermen to pause while the world takes notice.

O’Barry has been trying to raise awareness in Japan about the secretive dolphin slaughter that takes place in the small fishing town of Taiji for years, but the Japanese media has refused to cover it. Until now.

“Today is September 1st, the first day of the dolphin slaughter season in Japan. But when I arrived today by bus from Kansai Airport with media representatives from all over the world, the notorious Cove from the movie was empty. There were no dolphin killers in sight. So today is a good day for dolphins!”, wrote O’Barry today in a report for the activist social network, TakePart.

He also said that when the Japanese police arrived, they merely shook his hand and told him they there were not there to support the “dolphin killing fishermen”, then left.

Despite all of his trials in the town, O’Barry believes strongly that Taiji can change its shameful image. He hopes to show the media around the town tomorrow, to encourage a more positive view of its people and potential. O’Barry sees an opportunity to turn the disgraced town into a place where dolphins are cherished rather than slaughtered. In time, he thinks Taiji could become a model for dolphin activism and education, raising awareness about dolphins much in the same way that Nantucket, once the center of the whaling industry in the U.S., has changed its image by stopping the killing and marketing to whale-watchers instead.

Even though the media is finally taking notice, keeping the movement alive over time will still take a great commitment from those who care about dolphins.. You can help by donating to the Save the Dolphins Coalition, which you can do at savejapandolphins.org.

Comments on anything? Blog me.  Even If I am not checking in….love knowing that you are!

Peace out….

Documentary: The Cove

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 31st August 2009

I hope that everyone had a great weekend!

While getting my mani-pedi on Saturday, the brief comment that the TAO left a few days before about our seas being polluted down to 3600 feet, was something that kept entering my thoughts. What have the mammals done to deserve this?

Then while perusing People Magazine, (the only time I get to read these kinds of mags is when I am being pampered :), I came across a tiny blurb about dolphins, and the 60′s TV series “Flipper”. As a kid, I loved watching Flipper, and even went to a few shows where dolphins ‘performed’.

As I became more of an animal/mammal lover, and more aware, I no longer supported those type of environments that held animals captive. Whenever I read that the circus is coming to town (Barnum and Bailey especially) I send letters to them, telling them exactly how I feel about their ‘treatment’ to the animals. I have read many horror stories of the inhumane ways animals and mammals are treated while in captivity, and it is unacceptable. To me, animals are best left free in their natural environment and habitat.

In fact, I even volunteered for 6 months at the Marine Mammal Center and helped care for sick sea lions that were affected by humans and our carelessness, so that they could return to their natural habitat. It is amazing what a little plastic from a 6-pack can do to our sea life. It was hard work, but knowing that my care helped the mammals to heal and enabled them to be released back out into the sea was worth the cold mornings. And if you have been reading my blog, you know I hate the cold :)

So…this tiny blurb in People Magazine, spoke of a man, activist Richard O’Barry, who has spent his last 40 years of life, advocating for dolphins, recently released his documentary about the plight of dolphins, by the predatory hands of the Japanese. I was not aware of the plight of dolphins in Japan until I read about O’Barry, the dolphin ‘abolitionist’,  and his lifelong commitment to these beautiful, smiling creatures.

Winner of the Audience Award for Best Documentary at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival, here’s a clip of The Cove:

Marine Mammal Specialist, Earth Island Institute

Richard O’Barry has worked both sides of the dolphin street, the first 10 years with the dolphin captivity industry, the past 38 against it.

Working back in the 1960s for Miami Seaquarium, O’Barry captured and trained dolphins, including the five dolphins who played the role of Flipper in the popular American TV-series of the same name. When Kathy, the dolphin who played Flipper most of the time, died in his arms, O?Barry realized that capturing dolphins and training them to perform silly tricks is simply wrong.

From that moment on, O’Barry knew what he must do with his life. On the first Earth Day, 1970, he founded the Dolphin Project, dedicated to freeing captive dolphins who were viable candidates and educating people throughout the world to the plight of dolphins in captivity. He launched a searing campaign against the multi-billion dollar dolphin captivity industry, telling the public what was really going on at dolphin shows and urging people not to buy tickets to see dolphins play the fool.

O’Barry has rescued and released more than 25 captive dolphins in Haiti, Colombia, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Brazil, the Bahamas Islands and the United States. His more than 45 years of experience with dolphins and his firsthand knowledge about the methods used to capture and train them has taken him all over the world to participate in lectures and conferences about the controversial dolphin captivity issue. As he knew it would, this created a lot of hostility toward him by those who stood to profit from the continued exploitation of dolphins.

“They’re in this for money. Take it away, and they’ll quit doing this,” O’Barry says and adds: “Dolphins are free-ranging, intelligent, and complex wild animals, and they belong in the oceans, not playing the clown in our human schemes.”

To recognize his contribution, in 1991 O’Barry received the ‘Environmental Achievement Award’ presented by the United States Committee for the United Nations Environmental Program (US/UNEP).

His book ‘Behind the Dolphin Smile’ was published in 1989, a second book, ‘To Free A Dolphin’ was published in September 2000. Both of them are about his work and dedication.

O’Barry is a Fellow National in The Explorers Club, a multidisciplinary society that links together scientists and explorers from all over the world. Each member is an accomplished individual with at least one fascinating story to tell.

In January, 2007, O’Barry became the Marine Mammal Specialist for Earth Island Institute and Director of Save Japan Dolphins coalition: www.SaveJapanDolphins.org

Readers:  Have any of you seen this movie? The clip has certainly aroused my curiosity,  and I intend to see the documentary. Perhaps, you too are a lover of mammals and your support of them is the answer to the question that you asked yourself yesterday, and hopefully today…and tomorrow….and… :) “What can I do to make the world a better place?”

I know I ask a lot from my readers and I don’t expect for everyone to advocate everything that needs support on this planet. But what I do expect, is that you find one thing and dedicate time in your life to helping that one thing, or one area, that makes your heart sing. I know that when I give my time and effort, it makes me feel like I am contributing to the planet and our environment in a good way,  instead of just taking and adding to the many environmental problems…..giving, gives my life more meaning and purpose.

Al:  I am a bit confused, as maybe you were about my post yesterday. Not sure if you were referring to my age and your pair of drawers :) I was not the writer of the article that I posted under the heading, “The Dream Lives On: Keeping The Kennedy Fire Alive”. It was just something that I found on the Huff.  I liked it and it inspired me, so I posted it.

Enjoy the beginning of your week…

Political Animal

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 7th July 2009

So, it’s been awhile since I’ve written about my four-legged pals. They are always on my mind and since a few things came across my plate this morning, I thought it was a good day to give them some blog time.

This is a California thing, so to all of you outside of California, bear with me. I have something for you to do too. :)

As much as I like to be active in world issues, California is my stomping ground and many times our actions here have a huge ripple affect across the nation. If we can prevent something or ban something from happening here, other states tend to see just what Californians are ‘fussing’ about. And most of the time we aren’t fussin’; were dealing with some serious issues. And in my mind, if it has anything to do with animals, it is a serious issue and one that is close to my heart.

Today, it’s about taking some political action for the animals.

Here’s what the Humane Society has to say:

Young animals sold on street corners, parking lots, and along roadsides are kept in terrible conditions. These dogs, cats, and other animals often lack food or water. They are kept in overcrowded, dirty cages in extreme temperatures. Commonly purchased on impulse, they are too often in poor health and die of illness days after being purchased. It is impossible for officials to ensure the welfare of animals as well as the safety of consumers if such random sales practices are allowed.

Fortunately, legislation (A.B. 1122) would prohibit the sale of puppies, kittens, and other animals on street corners and in parking lots. This bill has passed the Assembly and is now pending in a Senate committee.

So…what can you do? Simple. Take action. As usual, all it takes is one minute out of you day….one short phone call. Remember to leave your name and address so it is clear you are a constituent. You can say:

“Hello, my name is [your name] and I am calling from [your town]. As a constituent, I urge [your Senator] to support A.B. 1122 to prevent the sale of young animals on street corners. Good breeders keep puppies and kittens in their home, and allow potential buyers to see the animals in that safe environment. Please support this humane legislation. Thank you.”

So who is your State Senator for your district? – If you don’t know by now, let me inform you. Someone on Craig’s List posted this ad. Isn’t that fab? Someone actually took out an ad asking for Californians to participate and write letters to their Senators, and they’ve listed the Senators below – Easy. I love it.

Those of us fighting for the animals in Sacramento have done our part getting this bill this far. Now we need you to call, e-mail or fax a letter to legislators on the Senate Public Safety Committee. We are very close to passage of this bill.

Think of the consequnces in the reduction of animals sold here in California and the relief this would give Shelters and rescue organizations. Do this now or it will slip through your fingers. Telephone and fax numbers and e-mail addresses are below. Send this on to everyone you know who will respond. We need a blizzard of support on this one.

(If you recognize one of the names below as your State Senator, your response to that legislator is 10 times as important. They get very nervous about opposing a bill their constituents support. The web addresses will give you their websites and the communities they represent. We especially need Inglewood, East LA. Sacramento, Northern SF and Marin people to respond). Just write or call them and tell them you support this bill passing. Takes about a minute…

TAKE ACTION TODAY
These State Senators are on the committee that will consider A.B. 1122 TODAY – Tuesday, July 7. Please contact your State Senator below, today, and urge support for this humane legislation. Thank you!

And for those of you who don’t live in California wishing that today you could do something for the animals. Okay, here it is. This next task in not just a California thing. And again, this is real simple and only takes a minute.

Once again, the Animal Rescue Site needs more people to visit their site. The more people that do, the easier it is for them to meet their quota which gives them free food donated every day to abused and neglected animals. Go to their site and click on the purple box ‘fund food for animals for free’. It won’t cost you a thing but I bet you’ll feel great afterwards knowing that you did a kind deed for the day. Okay? Click here for the website. Thank you!

Sandra: I have a strong gut feeling. Have faith. :)

Zen Lill:  I love fireworks – seems you had a grand share of them this weekend. Happy to hear that you were havin’ fun in the sun! So you’re a no tan line kind of girl huh? Not me, I love being two-toned. :)

Melanie: Thank you for posting about the treaty between the US and Russia in regards to our nuclear arms. This is so important, and worthy of a blog post. I am inspired. Thank you.

Anonymous:  Thanks for the link. I have not been able to read it in its entirety but so far it is interesting.

Cindy:  Healthcare reform has been on my mind for weeks. It is certainly blog worthy – many of you have given your two, and most of what you’ve said, I have felt the same way. I just haven’t taken the time to figure out what more I want to say about it that hasn’t already been said. I just haven’t been inspired to write about it and in fact I have pretty much ignored the subject. Maybe now since I’ve admitted that something will start the spark.

And speaking of health….

….Doug: Thanks for the post. Good info. The link doesn’t work, but your post is verified at Snopes.

Stay healthy peeps.

This Is No ‘Dog Eat Dog World’ God Dog It :)

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 1st May 2009

I just had to post this video. Ha! –  I feel like I say the same thing every time I post a video. But hey, what more can I say? This is one animal rescue like no other.  Dogs to me are the very epitome of ‘love’. They “Live it and give it” daily. Hmm…do you think that it is just a coincidence that ‘God’ spelled backwards is ‘Dog’?

Readers: Have anything or naything to say? Blog me. By the way, ‘naything’ is my new made up word. One uses it when they don’t have anything to say but they say it anyway because they just want to say something….even though it’s really nothing…you know ‘naything’. Got it?

Cyndi: Oh, who knows.

Anonymous:  Hello. I believe that you gave your opinion the other day, yes? I am just as opinionated as the next person and many do not agree with me. I am perfectly fine with this. It’s what makes life and people interesting.  Look, the bottom line with me is, I trust our president. I am on his side too. I may not want Bush and Cheney to walk away with just a slap on the wrist from all of this but I am not the one running this country…and I have to admit, I can be a bit knee-jerky at times. I guess that’s why I’m not the president. :)

Anonymous:  Interesing idea, but is it possible?

Anna:  Ah yes, the commen thread amongst my readers…the difficulties of just being able to voice your words. It is really just pure luck whether one gets in or not. But I do appreciate all of you for trying.

It is Friday and I am so delighted!

Pup Progress Prevails

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 9th April 2009

Well I had another small breakthrough with my new little friend Mia. I visit her everyday and several days ago, I went to visit her before work for a few minutes. I didn’t see her, so I quietly went and peeked into the large wooden crate where her crate is kept, to see if she was in there.  She was standing there as cute as ever, but she was shaking in fear. A painter was still working on the building, and knowing how she reacts toward strangers (I was a stranger to her a few days ago), it didn’t surprise me that she was hiding and afraid to come out.

I gave her a big smile and whispered her name, but she continued to just look at me and shake. I only had time to give her a little treat which she would not take from me, so I set it down in front of her and left. At work, again I cried for a few minutes.  I know, I know….I am just such a baby when it comes to animals. It just killed me knowing that she is so lonely and scared and that I could not be there to comfort her; work was calling.

But after work, when I went to visit her again, the painter was gone and I found her just hanging out in the yard.  Mia looked up at me but there was no change in her face….not even a slight recognition of me. I put my purse down, grabbed a few treats from the small container that I brought and went over to sit down next to her.

When I sat down, I knew I had made progress. Mia only took two steps but her steps were towards me; a first since I met her. I broke the treats into pieces and fed her a few, which she accepted from my hand this time.  Then I began to pet her head telling her that she was such a good girl. And when I stopped, she surprised me by nudging my hand to pet her again. I was elated that she was responding to me. I kept testing her by petting her and then stopping to see if she would nudge my hand again. And each time she did. I got a kick out of it. Yes peeps, it is the small simple things in life that bring me so much joy.

Then Mia walked away toward the table where I left the treats, and stared at the small container. I started to laugh knowing that she was telling me she wanted more. I got up, grabbed the treats and sat back down. She followed me and sat next to me. The more treats I fed her, the more excited that she got.  Although her eyes remained unemotional, she started to eat the treats with a hunger that I had not experienced from her before.

I think she was beginning to trust me.  I wanted her to know that she had to do nothing to be gifted with treats and love….that all she needed to do was just be her naturally wonderful sweet self. I just wanted to give Mia love with no expectation from her….to share moments of joy with her, to make up for the fear and loneliness that I know she experiences at times in her life.

She allowed me to rub her head in between both of my hands and kiss the top of her head. She answered my affections with wet kisses back on my nose. Oh….this was getting too good. She was giving me some lovin’s back and all I wanted to do was reach out and hug her. But I held back. I didn’t want to scare her or overwhelm her by my excitement so I kept my cool and continued our little love fest.

And then a few minutes later she did what any dog would do when they feel safe and loved. She laid by my side, rolled on her back, spread her little legs, and pawed at me to rub her tummy. Oh…little Mia had my heart from the moment that I saw her, but now she made my heart sing. I may be bringing a little joy into her life but she is bringing so much joy into my life knowing that my love is having an affect on her.

After a good tummy rub, I had to leave. I got up to go and Mia immediately got up too. As I walked away blowing her kisses goodbye, her tail which I’ve only seen curled under, started to uncurl and wag….just a tiny bit. And although her eyes were still the same sad expression, the little wag of her tail gave me hope.

However, that was a few days ago. I have to report that now when I enter Mia’s backyard, she jumps for joy and her tail wags excitedly. I have been gifting her with treats and love daily and I am hopeful that soon I will be able to introduce her to Lucy so that they can have some play time.
