This ‘n That Chitchat

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 8th April 2009

Good morning!

Oh…waking up to so many comments is delightful and stressful all at the same time. So many topics. Now I know why blogs are usually so narrowly focused on one subject matter. But it was my choice to start a blog that talked about any and everything. It certainly helps me to be a more-rounded person, and I certainly don’t get bored.  And obviously you don’t either.

Robert: Good to hear from you again. Thanks for informing us of this ‘Right To Work’ law appeal. Any more news to report about the hearing?

Zen Lill: Sorry we haven’t connected – Let’s try again today. How is the little kitty?

Tom: Well it looks like you got some girls excited.  Many have said enough but you know me…I must give my two too.  Why you think you can compare apples to oranges is totally illogical. When people of this country elect people into office who care less about the people or this country, and their only concern is to keep the country white and their pockets full, we are going to get what we deserve.  We are going to be fleeced. But hey, the majority voted them in. Remember don’t hate the players hate the game? The people of this country chose the game by voting those into office who made up the rules to the game.

I don’t see the polar bears having any say in this. What game are they playing and did they choose to play? No.  And any man saying that it is going to happen anyway to justify his actions to hunt and kill is a lowlife excuse and is a man, in my mind, with no compassion or respect for the animal. Compassion and respect do not equate to killing innocents. Obviously he has no respect for their lives or even cares because Warner stated that he doesn’t do it for the kill. Some men do it for the kill which to me is wrong….but to not do it for the kill and to kill anyways saying that they’re going to be killed regardless,  says to me that their lives don’t matter one iota to this man. It is really sickening. The fact that you are comparing Warner’s actions to Anonz, says only one thing: The girls are correct – you are just one jealous man.

Anna: Congratulations to Guam’s first major movie – Good luck at the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival!

Anonymous 25: I think it is our job to inform, and continue to do so. If we just hang back and leave it up to the media, we all know what ramifications will occur.

However, anyone who says that Obama is the worst president is a racist. After all that our president has done in his short time in office, it would be difficult to say otherwise unless you were a racist.  What can you do? Nothing if he is a racist, except maybe point out that he is. If he is truly just uninformed, keep hitting him with the facts that he can’t dispute. If he is intelligent enough he’ll see your viewpoint or at least research what you have to say if he truly cares….and is not just hiding his true racist feelings. At some point you’ll know if you don’t already.

Oh…I’d love to say more but as usual my time is up. I’ll reserve the rest of my thoughts for another day.

Gratefully your blog host,

michelle

The New Extreme Hunting: Bagging A Polar Bear

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 7th April 2009

Yes I am on a roll….here’s another little didley that I discovered while perusing the internet. With all that we know about global warming and its effects on Polar Bears…with all that we know about Polar Bears and their importance in this world, we have lowlife degenerate scum hunting for the thrill of the kill.

Polar Bears are not only starving and drowning because of the perils of climate change but now they have to deal with humans hunting them for sport. The latest challenge for fans of extreme hunting? They call it ‘bagging a Polar Bear’. And for $35 grand, you too can bag one for the coveted Polar Bear hide. How sickening is that?

Boyd Warner doesn’t think so.  He treasures the memories of killing his first Polar Bear:

It was 2003. For days he had stalked his prey on the frozen wastelands north of Pond Inlet, one of Canada’s most isolated Inuit communities deep inside the Arctic Circle. His dog team picked up the scent of an eight-foot adult male and they hurtled over the ice: the hunt was on.

“It was one of those beautiful Arctic days,” recalled Mr Warner. “We’d had about 14 hours of sunlight and were completely surrounded by nature. The moment of death comes quickly for the bear. You might track one for days through the ice but a single shot to the heart kills it instantly.”

Mr Warner is the man who helps others create treasurable memories too.

Earlier this week, the 45-year-old Canadian, whose company Adventure Northwest is based in Yellowknife, sent this season’s first group of hunters north to Pond Inlet, where they will track and kill up to six bears. “This is probably the toughest hunt you can ever do,” he said. “The weather conditions are appalling and it takes a huge amount of patience. You’re living in the Arctic where it can drop to -50C at night and everything is done with sled dogs. It’s incredibly gruelling.” His clientele is Mexicans, Americans and Europeans who say that they ‘respect the animal enormously.’

Wha’at?! So if they are killing those that they ‘respect’, how do they treat those they don’t ‘respect’?

“I don’t enjoy killing animals but I enjoy the hunt,” said Mr Warner. “People find that difficult to understand but for me there is no paradox.”

Yeah, I have a hard time understanding your BS. If you don’t enjoy killing then why do it? This is his answer:

“Those 20 bears are going to get killed one way or another because the Inuits depend on them for food during the winter,” Mr Warner insisted. “So it shouldn’t really matter whether it is the indigenous population that is shooting them or outsiders.”

Oh, so easy for him to justify his actions…but sorry, it does matter

I know that the Polar Bears have been a source of food for the Inuits but knowing that up to two-thirds of all polar bears could be lost by 2050, this brings the sustainability of hunting into question.  We need to protect these bears.

As far as Warner, Oh, how I would love for Zmiv to take him on. You know…put him out on the ice and hunt him down. Only make it a long, slow and painful kill.  I can’t help feeling that way…but hey, I ‘respect’ Mr. Warner.

Hey ZL: I will e-mail you the recipe – it is delicious!

Hafa Adai Peter and Anna:  My pleasure. Hope that you are doing well.

Peace out…

Pythons Smuggled Into Guam

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 6th April 2009

Good morning all!  I hope that the weekend went well!

This article this morning is for you. Hafa Adai Peter, Alison, Anna, and all of you Guamanians out there. You have been posting some pretty interesting articles about Guam, so I thought that I would throw one in.  Maybe you have heard (?), or maybe not.

Pythons Smuggled Into Guam

Tuesday, 24 March 2009 16:07 PDF PrintE-mail

Guam-The fight against brown tree snakes seems to be an endless battle, and the US Department of Fish and Wildlife, and the local Department of Agriculture have their hands full trying just about everything to control and eradicate the pesky reptiles, but another problem could surface involving another type of reptile, and if the officials don’t get a handle on it quickly… Guam could have a new snake species to deal with..

We did ask if the Department of Agriculture would be sending the snakes off island, however the Chief of Aquatics and Wildlife, Tino Aguon did not know yet how the matter would be handled. He also did not want to comment further on the investigation.

What I don’t get, is these snakes are from Africa and have no business being on Guam. Why would any body smuggle them in? I’m obviously being facetious here. I know exactly why people smuggle in exotics…all for the cold hard green, with no repect to the one that is brought to an unfamiliar place to live in an environment that he may or may not take well to.  In this case, the Ball Python.

I used to travel to Indonesia where there used to be many species of exotic birds and animals. Unfortunately many have been captured and sold to anyone willing to pay the price. And sadly, it has lead to the extinction of many.  I just wish people would respect the lifestyle and habitat of these amazing creatures and let them live their lives as they were meant to live.  But if people aren’t going to have the attitude ‘live and let live’ in regards to humans, do you think they would feel any different towards those not human?

Oh….I get the feeling my topics this week are going to be about the little creatures in this world that I love.  I think I’m on a roll….but we’ll see.

~~~~~~~
Hi AMORA: Sorry, I didn’t see your comment a few days ago in regards to Sweteno. I read the entire article and the comments and it felt so long ago….it was only last February – oh how times changes so drastically theses days. Reading made me miss Azza and her crew even more. Those felt like the good ‘ol days. Hmm…I too look forward to exploring this expanding Universe. Maybe we will do it together :)
Hi Zen Lill:  I got your VM. We were in thhe middle of preping dinner etc. I made a wonderful lemon ice cream from our Meyer lemon tree. Yum. Anyway, I am working a full 9-5 day today so I won’t be able to catch up today. Maybe tomorrow.
Happy Monday everyone! I hope the beginning of the week leads to something fab.
Make A Commitment To Be The Joy In Someone’s Life
Posted by Michelle Moquin on 4th April 2009
I have made a tiny bit of progress. ‘Pup progress’ that is. After three weeks of working at a new job, I discovered while putting the recycling out, that a sweet little dog lives in the back yard of the building behind the building where I work in. The caretakers (not exactly the words I would use in this situation) live in this building and own a salon on the ground floor street level, and are our landlords to the building I work in.
The dog, a little blondie, reminds me so much of my mom’s past dog Zoe, only this dog, which I later found out is named Mia, has no life in her. She is only 4 but she looks so much older and the lack of happiness in her face and stride breaks my heart.
When I first discovered her Monday, I was shocked. I had gone out in the back before but had never seen her. When she saw me, she cowered from me. I knelt down and tried with my sweetest voice to call her over, but she just started shaking and moved away from me. At that point I backed off and decided to do a bit of investigating.
I spoke with a coworker and she informed me that she thought that they did not treat the dog very well. She has heard the young daughter of the landlord yell at her in a screeching voice to be quiet.  Hmm…’fruit doesn’t fall to far from the tree’, came to mind. This is not a natural behavior but a learned one. Well…to me it was obvious that Mia was not being treated the best, but I didn’t want to start judging before I found out more.
The next day I ran into the landlord and I knew that I had to inquire very carefully as to not put him on the defense. My goal was to get more information not accuse. He informed me that they got her at a shelter two years ago and that she is now four. Her name, as I mentioned, is Mia. He said that she was skittish and that in the beginning she cried a lot and they needed to ‘shush her’ because of the businesses in the area that required a quiet atmosphere for their clientele. My first thought was, ‘There is a reason your dog is crying. Instead of ‘shushing her’, find out what it is that is bothering her.’ I of course already knew what was bothering her. She wanted love and attention. I know when a dog is happy. I can see it in Lucy’s face when she is happy and how  sad she is when I leave the house. Mia was not a happy dog, and it wasn’t just because her caretakers left to go to work. I could see from her face that she was not getting love and that she was wanting companionship badly….but of course I did not say this.
What I did do was ask him if he didn’t mind if I brought her some treats and played with her.  He was okay with this and went on to say that his child plays with her and that Mia was lucky to have them.  Hmm…not the kind of statement that would come from a dog lover who loves his dog. I don’t say that Lucy is lucky to have me. No, I would say that I am very lucky to have her in my life.
But, I let it go. My goal was to get the okay to hang with her and he granted me it. That’s all I cared about at that point. I made a commitment to myself that day, that if nothing else, I would be the joy in Mia’s life.
For the next few days, I would visit Mia every day before and after work. I brought her liver treats and placed them a few feet in front of me and walked away. She went to them and nibbled them up.  I knelt down and cupped a few in my hand. Surprisingly she walked over, sniffed my hand and ate them. She was reluctant but did so anyways with great caution.  Then after she had a few she started to shake and cower away. Even when she ate the treats there was not even a glimpse of excitement in her face. Although there was available water for her, her mouth seemed dry and her sad eyes seemed permanently stained with dark tear marks. It made me sad but I didn’t want her to feel my sadness, so I just kept saying her name in a sweet voice and calling her a good girl.
Wednesday, after I gave here a few treats, she once again started shaking and walked away toward the back entrance to the house. I guess that was a good sign as maybe she was scared and found comfort inside the house. I looked around for a bed. Was there one out here in the yard? I backed off to give her space and then she turned and walked toward this wooden shack where she disappeared inside of it. Oh…her bed must be back there. I turned the corner slowly, holding my energy in so that I did not alarm her, and I found her in her crate sitting on a few blankets. Dirty as there were, at least she had something to keep her warm. I put a few more treats in front of her, said goodbye and left.
I walked down the walkway and through the window, I saw the landlord watching TV. I waved at him and thanked him thinking, ‘Here you are inside watching TV and how wonderful it would be if you had Mia next to you, loving her, petting her, and giving her the attention that she is craving.’ Again, I said to myself,’ I will be the light in her life that she looks forward to seeing.’
On Thursday, I brought her a bone stuffed with treats. I was excited to give it to her but she just looked at it and walked around the corner to her bed. I followed her and put the bone down in front of her, said a few sweet words to her and left. I needed to get to work.  I cried for a few minutes that day.  I so wanted to hug her and give her love but I knew that I needed to be patient.
During a break, I went outside and I saw her peeking over the child’s gate that held her in. Her nose was black with dirt and it made me smile a bit. I wondered if she had buried the bone I gave her. She still had that lonely look on her face and I thought how sad it was that she was behind there when just down the walkway was Peet’s coffee where so many dogs hung out being loved by caretakers and passersby.
Then yesterday, I noticed that when I went into the back yard, she was tied up. I was not surprised because the building was getting painted and there were painters working back there earlier. At least the landlord cared enough to tie her up so that she couldn’t get out. I was grateful for that. I walked toward her where she was laying in the sun, her leash stretched to the limit. She lifted her head, but she did not get up, which was a good sign.
I sat next to Mia and fed her some more treats. She slowly ate them and when she was done, I slowly cupped my hand under her small head petting her and holding it, sending her love. She allowed me to continue loving her as I spoke to her in a soft sweet voice.  Still her eyes showed no signs of life. I went to reach for her belly to give it a rub, but she pulled her legs in tight. Okay..okay, I won’t go there. I went back to pet her face and slowly her legs relaxed back into a natural position. For ten more minutes I caressed her face and while we both sat silently staring at each other, I visualized love coming from my heart and showering her with it. When I got up to leave, she lifted her head and stared at me as I walked away. She was still expressionless.
I look forward to the day when I walk back to her and see a change in her face…even the slightest bit of joy or recognition will make my day.
On another note, before work yesterday,  I spoke with the same coworker and she said that I inspired her to do a little investigative work herself. She loves dogs and would love to have one of her own, but she rents and no pets are allowed. However, she lives next to a man who has a dog. Unfortunately she hears him constantly yelling every expletive at his dog. She has never seen the dog but knows that he lives in the backyard most of the time, as she has never seen her neighbor take him for a walk.  She decided that she will join me in my little crusade, by talking to him and seeing if she can play with the dog and take him for walks. I was so delighted and grateful to hear this.
Readers:  Will you join me and make the time to be a loving companion to someone who needs a friend?
Have a great weekend!
Gratefully your blog host,
michelle
Popeye. No, Not The Sailor Man, But He Is Strong
Posted by Michelle Moquin on 13th March 2009
Lucy will be jealous. I met someone and fell in love.
I went into work early yesterday afternoon to borrow something and  that is when I first heard him.  My heart started to pound with excitement. I peaked into the adjusting room trying not to disturb any of the clients, but all I heard was voices and he was  no where to be found.  I decided to wait and be patient so I backed off and waited in anticipation.
A few seconds later he came running out of the room with a smile on his face. And that is when I met him. My heart leapt out and all I wanted to do was hug and kiss him. I kneeled down to this little guy and held his face in my hands and stared into his sweet eyes.
Scroll down to see my new love……
Keep scrolling…..
Oh, doesn’t it just bug you when someone tells you to scroll down? Believe me, he’s worth the wait. :)
And here he is!
Isn’t he just the cutest?!
Popeye is a breed probably mixed with Formosan Mountain Dog, a breed indigenous to Taiwan. As you have probably guessed, Popeye doesn’t have the use of hind legs. He was born this way. But you would never know; his moves are just too smooth :) And the joy on his face tells you that he is as happy as any 4-legged would be.  Now you can see why I fell in love. I think Lucy would fall in love with him too.
I am not done with this little guy. Stay tuned…
Hey Zen Lill and Doug:  I know you both would go apes over my new love. I wish you could meet him too.
Huh…a bunch of comments just came in. Too late peeps. I am out of here. I will read them later and comment tomorrow.
Happy Friday!
Gratefully your blog host,
