Popeye. No, Not The Sailor Man, But He Is Strong

Posted by Michelle Moquin on March 13th, 2009

Lucy will be jealous. I met someone and fell in love.

I went into work early yesterday afternoon to borrow something and  that is when I first heard him.  My heart started to pound with excitement. I peaked into the adjusting room trying not to disturb any of the clients, but all I heard was voices and he was  no where to be found.  I decided to wait and be patient so I backed off and waited in anticipation.

A few seconds later he came running out of the room with a smile on his face. And that is when I met him. My heart leapt out and all I wanted to do was hug and kiss him. I kneeled down to this little guy and held his face in my hands and stared into his sweet eyes.

Scroll down to see my new love……

Keep scrolling…..

Oh, doesn’t it just bug you when someone tells you to scroll down? Believe me, he’s worth the wait. :)

And here he is!

Isn’t he just the cutest?!

Popeye is a breed probably mixed with Formosan Mountain Dog, a breed indigenous to Taiwan. As you have probably guessed, Popeye doesn’t have the use of hind legs. He was born this way. But you would never know; his moves are just too smooth :) And the joy on his face tells you that he is as happy as any 4-legged would be.  Now you can see why I fell in love. I think Lucy would fall in love with him too.

I am not done with this little guy. Stay tuned…

~~~~~~~~~
Hey Zen Lill and Doug:  I know you both would go apes over my new love. I wish you could meet him too.
Huh…a bunch of comments just came in. Too late peeps. I am out of here. I will read them later and comment tomorrow.
Happy Friday!
    the old economy is not “in ashes.” The old economy said that if you lived within your means, didn’t spend more than you earned, saved a little, got a little education and increased your value to your employer from time to time, then you would succeed. This is exactly the same as it is in the “new” economy. The problem is that everyone thinks that they somehow “deserve” what everyone else has. So with this entitlement-mentality, they either resort to crime, like many at management level have done (but certainly not all), or they overextend themselves with stupid, idiotic credit-card-debt, auto-loans, student-loans and other various forms of debt.
    Stop borrowing money and only spend what you have earned! Do this and your personal economy will not be in “crisis.” This whole “crisis” is a self-fulfilling lie, perpetrated on the majority of people who don’t understand simple math. If a person can’t run their own financial house, why should they be placed in charge of the country’s? You have elected a government that has, in less than 60 days, spent/borrowed over 1.5 TRILLION dollars!! It’s laughable that you all can point your finger at the evil corporate CEO’s for their shenanigans, but can’t see that your own recently elected government is raping & pillaging you financially every day!
  2. Health Info Says:
    THE POWER OF COMPASSION
    Can good thoughts for the well-being of others also keep you healthy? For centuries people have turned to various forms of meditation to quiet their minds, improve their concentration, decrease anxiety, soothe pain and facilitate healing. Research led by a Tibetan Buddhist teacher and an American physician adds yet another benefit to that already impressive list — their study found evidence that practicing a particular kind, called compassion meditation, may help reduce the type of inflammatory responses to stressful interpersonal situations that have been linked to the development of both mental and physical diseases. People who practiced compassion meditation regularly also had less distress and anger in response to stress.
    CHANGING THE WAY WE SEE OTHERS
    At Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, 61 healthy students were randomly assigned to one of two groups. One group participated in six weeks of twice-weekly classroom training in a non-religious version of compassion meditation while the other group (the control group) spent a similar amount of time in health discussions. Meditation teacher Geshe Lobsang Tenzin Negi, PhD, director of the Emory-Tibet Partnership and a study author, explained that lojong (as the meditation practice is called) means training or transforming the mind. Where we’re all conditioned to identify certain people as friends and others as enemies, lojong teaches us to challenge those assumptions. “It helps us see that others are no different from ourselves, that all people have the same problems and common aspirations,” he explained. “It has a cognitive component that teaches us to reshape our relationships with ourselves and others to better connect each of us to all of humanity.”
    To perform lojong meditation, students first learned how to do “meditative concentration” on their breathing, which helps stabilize the mind and refines their attention. Next they practiced mindfulness and meditation, to train them to increase their non-judgmental awareness of thoughts and bodily sensations and were instructed to focus on the universal desire of all people to be happy and avoid suffering. Finally, the students sent out their desire for happiness in a circle that expanded outward… first on themselves… then on loved ones… then to strangers… and finally, to those whom they disliked. They were instructed to concentrate on generating compassion for all people. These students were also given a CD to use to help them practice compassion meditation at home daily, keeping online records of when they meditated and for how long.
    A control group spent classroom time in group discussion about issues related to the physical and mental health of college students. Topics included stress management, substance abuse, sexual behavior and health, and depression and anxiety. This group also participated in role-playing exercises and mock debates on the topics they studied. As a way to maintain an equal time requirement with the meditation group for at-home participation, students in the control group were asked to write weekly opinion papers, two to three pages in length, on self-improvement topics. Study participants were recruited from their Emory University health education class and randomly assigned to either the meditation or the control (health discussion) group.
    A SURPRISING OUTCOME
    At the end of the study, students in both groups were asked to participate in a “stressful task” based on a widely used laboratory psychosocial stress test. Researchers measured their biological responses, including blood levels of the stress hormones cortisol and  interleukin 6 (IL-6), which is a marker of inflammation. The researchers anticipated a difference between the meditators and the control group, but that actually turned out to be insignificant, said Charles Raison, MD, assistant professor in Emory’s department of psychiatry and behavioral sciences and senior author of the study. What was significant, however, was a reduction in inflammatory markers that correlated with how frequently subjects meditated. The more often subjects practiced compassion meditation, the lower the levels of inflammation in their blood after the stress test.
    WHY THE RESULTS MATTER
    We know that inflammation puts wear and tear on the body and that has a cumulative negative effect on health. Dr. Raison called it “promising” to see that engaging in a discipline that helps retrain the mind to be more compassionate not only makes people kinder, but also healthier. His co-author Dr. Negi agrees, noting that by teaching a broader acceptance of others, this type of compassion meditation can be “an instrument of health that might be of benefit to people in all walks of life.”
    It would be great if everyone could use “common sense” and only “spend what they have earned”; however, for many this just isn’t possible.
    Many of our citizens today don’t earn enough to access housing, child care, healthy food and medical care. This isn’t a problem for just our “poor”, numerous “middle class” individuals are now being crushed by the high costs of “basics”.
    Imagine your family earns $50K/year. The “affordable” apartment you rent costs $15,000/year (two-bedroom – you have two kids and cannot rent a “smaller” unit). The cheapest child care center for your children runs you about $26,000/yr. No kidding! This is the “most affordable” center in the area. This leaves you about $9K for all other expenses. You haven’t paid taxes, medical costs, food, utilities, auto expenses, and on and on… Before you question whether this young family should have “had children if they couldn’t afford them”, what if I tell you that prior to a “job loss” this family made nearly six figures. That spouse had to “settle” for a retail position that pays significantly less. Now, they are struggling to get by on $50K.
    This is happening all across our country. We can change details, but many cannot make it on their current wage…and they have been unable to access higher paying positions.
    Please – before you preach “personal responsibility” – learn about the challenges that today’s citizens (and families) are facing!
    Folks should live within their means and many have. Those that have not will suffer.
    But this GOVT financial crisis we now have began with REagan’s policies of deregulation of banks, Wall St and so much more. SO that made it possible for fat cat bankers and Wall St to do as they pleased, and they did. Bush kept the ‘party ‘going- adding huge tax cuts to huge CO’s even big oil ! REagan passed the biggest tax cut in our lfietime to the top 2-3 % GET THIS- he lowered the top tax rate FROM 80 % DOWN TO 30 %. There’s your
    ‘ redistribution of wealth ! Then W decided to give them ANOTHER HUGE CUT – this while fighting 2 wars ! No one with 1/2 a BRAIN DOES THAT. Now the GOP is ‘ worried ‘ about spending ! Big Phonies. Obama has been forced to spend this money to try and save us from a depression. the GOP made. .lets give him that chance.
  6. Greg Says:
    Worried About the Economy? Buy Guns…
    Are you concerned about your financial future? Or maybe you’re worried that the world just isn’t safe anymore…
    If so, you’re not the only one. In fact, people across the country are feeding their fears by purchasing firearms…
    Take Florida, for example. Floridians are applying for concealed weapons permits in record numbers — and the state government is buckling under the weight of a massive backlog of concealed weapons permits, according to the St. Petersburg Times. The state has even been forced to hire more than 60 temporary workers to deal with the flood of applications.
  7. Anonymous Says:
    Our Big Problem is – Bush & Co left us with no money and a gigantic crisis-so we are forced to consider that which we should never HAVE TO consider. In other words-
    Its a dire emergency folks. S0…Thank Reagan – Bush- Cheney &- Greenspan for their
    ‘legacy ‘ of crap that they dumped on Obama – and all of us !!
    Lelan, I saw your article. I had difficulty hooking up with Michelle’s blog too.
    Michelle I just wanted your readers to know that we practice green energy on Guam too. Here’s a featured story about one such occasion.
    Hagen family leverages net metering, spends less than $50 on power bill
    Since there isn’t one perfect answer to wean us off of our dependency on oil, I thought we’d use the example of one family on Guam that decided to crunch the numbers on investing in “net metering.” And in the end, not only is their meter running backwards, they’re spending less than a $50 a day, air con and all, on their entire power consumption.
    Bill Hagen and his family operate “Pacific Solar & Photo-Voltaics,” who’s company mission is to teach islanders that using renewable energy is an investment in our environment and our wallets. So they decided to put their money where their mouth is by investing in “net metering,” which called for installing these solar panels on the roof, which produces DC electricity, which leads to an inverter box that communicates with GPA. And because not a day goes by that the sun doesn’t shine on Guam, all that excess power the panels generate, literally turns the meter backwards.
    “The return is you get a 30% tax credit on your investment, so whatever you’ve spent, 30% comes back as a tax credit. Long term this system pays for itself. It’s not a short term investment, it’s not something you see a cash return on in the next two or three years. It will certainly pay better than your 401K right now,” he said.
    And no, GPA won’t give you cash back on the excess power you generate, but they will give you kilowatt credits to run more power, when you need it most. And talk about environmental benefits – in just 3 weeks time, the Hagen’s saved Guam from emitting 1,100 pounds of carbon dioxide, in addition to teaching the family a valuable lesson.
    “Since this system went in place, my Son and his children have been looking at the meter, looking at the power meter running back and forth trying to determine ‘how can we save more?’, ‘what should we turn off next?’, ‘What can we not run in order to make a difference between GPA and what we produce?’ It’s a consciousness thing,” he said.
    In the end Hagen says in order to think green, investing in net metering was the right thing to do for Guam, and his company looks forward to helping others do much of the same.
    Misch, I love and want the sweet doggie, Popeye : ) think I missed something though – can he walk or no? No matter really, I’d carry him around if need be…
    On iPhone but anon 3 you are correct. With escalating prices without salaries to go with it most Americans were left no choice but to borrow on credit. The other anon, u are also correct in that people did buy I to the American dream and often just wanted what they perceived everyone else having. Best not to compare yourself to others bc it’s all about perception and sucessful isn’t just defined by your cSh flow. Enough for now, too tough to type on the go…
  15. Sherry Says:
    In his budget, the President has proposed cutting billions of dollars in unfair subsidies and tax loopholes for oil and gas companies, to help pay for critical priorities like clean energy and green jobs.
    After all, they don’t exactly need the help: ExxonMobil made a record profit of $45.2 billion last year.
    But Big Oil is already fighting back. Like other corporate special interests, they’re lobbying heavily to gut Obama’s budget. The American Petroleum Institute has announced plans to fly top executives into Washington to help save their tax breaks.
    And they’ve got a lot of friends on Capitol Hill, thanks to millions in campaign contributions over the years. So we’ve got to be louder than Big Oil, and remind our elected representatives that they work for us, not ExxonMobil
    Write your representatives and tell them to get behind President Obama.
  16. Cynthia Says:
    Thanks Zen Lill for getting Madaline to save that crazy gallant. Anonz should have his legs broken so that he will be forced to return home. If he is there to avenge Nia, then he should not be getting involved in shit that does not involve that goal.
    Those people knew the risk. Why does he feel that he should risk his life for their stupidity? Saving everybody that puts themselves in harms way is very bad policy. Let people evaluate the risk and if they miscalculate, C’est La vie.
    Anonz on the other hand is needed back here. He may pick Zen Lill or he may wish to look to the blog or else where for some other interest. I have been in love with him for as along as I can remember reading this blog.
    I don’t know if he is real. I do know that I would do anything or go anywhere to meet him. Except Darfur that is.
    Shari, I’m with you. Growing up on Guam before my military tour, I have witness this kind of violence upon the youths of Guam. Several teenagers of my time were told to join the military and get out of Guam after their mistreatment by GPD officers and DYA personnel. Even Judges at the time forced some of Guam’s youths to get out of Guam by joining the military or face confinement for minor offenses such as curfew. Those of us that decided early on in life that living abroad is better than life on Guam became successful with our carreers to which we were hired for our ability not like the personnel of Government of Guam which depends solely on the “Pare” system. I am Glad that Alicia is doing her best to finally bring justice to offendors of our laws. We need someone like her to become the Governor and clean up Guam.
    Zen Lill
    I tried to post my comment to listening to Peter Shiff’s comment. It didn’t seem to take so I am re posting it here
    This guy is not telling us what caused the collapse. He is telling us what happened. He says it is reckless consumption and borrowing. That is what Anonz says guys like him who looted the system want you to believe.
    This crisis was caused by a crime. Rather a lot of crimes. Shiff is giving you a slick republican restatement of “give more to the rich and wait for the trickle down effect.” He is attempting to short sell the US dollar by trying to get the rest of the world to stop trading in the US dollar.
    Look at his logic. He is telling you that the government can’t create jobs. If that was true there would be no big businesses or small businesses. No business can exist without credit. So is it with the individual. We all use credit to purchase those items that we need to pay over time for to own now. Who do you know who pays cash for his car, education, home, etc?
    The Soviet Union didn’t collapse because of its inability to support its empire. If that were, true it wouldn’t still be the world power it is. Talk is cheap. Ask him if any nation besides the US would confront the Soviet Union militarily?
    Obama or anyone in his administration will not contact this hack because they know the difference between a person describing a car wreck and one who can understand the other nuances involved in the wreck. Such as the driver, car, road, weather, etc etc.
    He is a one trick pony. He blames the home purchaser as the culprit. The crooks and cause of this financial crises weren’t the people who were tricked into buying “more house than they could afford.” The cause was the manipulation of the value of those homes, the stocks we invested in and goods we bought.
    To try to reduce all the crooked schemes and manipulations into a few people buying homes and waiting for their value to inflate is idiotic. No wonder no one in Obama’s administration is calling him. If the Presidents who used a similar stimulus plan to get this country out of similar plights during and before world war II had listened to this nut’s advice we would still be in a depression.
    Someone needs to tell the repugs that a stimulus means SPENDING government money so that people will have an activity that they can get paid doing. That may not be the definition of a job to Shiff but to those who are getting paid for laboring on the activity, it will be.
    Those people will use that money to buy things. If those things are produced by companies, businesses will grow to meet the demand. Jobs will be created by those business. But they will arrive as a direct effort of the federal government. What idiot can’t figure that out?
    Sure he knows that. But he is wagering a short bet against the US dollar. So like those hedge fund crooks and people like Cramer who made big money short selling stocks, he is trying to drive down the value of the US dollar so that he can make a killing.
    Just like the hedge fund crooks who didn’t care about the banks and the employees of those banks they drove out of business to make that money, this crook doesn’t care about the disaster he is driving the American people towards with his scare tactics about the value of the US dollar.
    Anonz explained the phenomena of the US dollar when he explained that the world needs the dollar because it is the means of exchange for energy worldwide. He also said correctly that the Chinese and others would only get back pennies on the dollar if they allowed the US dollar to collapse. It would not be in the world’s interest to allow the dollar to fail.
    The dollar is like AIG it is too big to allow to fail. Other world currencies are traded against the value of the dollar. It is that big and important. So his premise is either too naive or just calculated enough to help him make a killing short selling the dollar.
    No one but a republican administration interested in continuing the status quo. Less, taxes, more deregulation etc, etc would call on this clown. If he was Steele and said government doesn’t create jobs, you would be lampooning him by now.
    But this is a white man in a business suit. He must know what he is talking about. Rather that tell the world 4 years ago that the value of homes would drop. He should have said that they would drop because their value was being manipulated by crooks. Then he may have been taken seriously. Of course he knew the value would come down as soon as the jig was up.
    But what he continues to do is to perpetuate the scam by blaming the victims for the debacle. I robbed you, but it is your fault because you trusted me, government shouldn’t intervene is republican logic.
    Re listen to him Zen Lill. You will hear the same spill the republican house and senate is trying to sell. Same shit different bullshitter.
    What does “your comment is waiting moderation” mean?” That is what it says after my comment on your comment section.
    Hi Robert, I have to moderate my comments bc i get 1-2000 comments of an unsavory variety everyday after posting worldwide stats on abuse of women several months ago, it was the only way to correct the situation, I apologize.
    I suppose I should have given my paragraph of disclaimers in before posting that video…he’s a stockbroker so yes, he a has a vested interest in driving things in a certain direction, a bad asumption on my part to think that it’d be taken with a grain of salt and automatically considered and not just taken as an ‘I agree with everything he’s saying’ – my bad there.
    I do agree with various descriptive points he makes and whether we like it or not, we may be replacing US bucks with Euros on the currency market, even if it is just the black market. But, you know what, Robert, I’m going to go relisten as you requested bc if you feel strongly enough about Shiff to post a long comment, then I will do it and get back to you later…maybe not today…been so busy not sure how I managed to land here a few times but doing that working thing all weekend also – so give me a few to state my case clearly, OK? I will approve your comment and let’s see what my shy e-mailer’s have to say also. thanks for giving me your two.
    You are so right. With all the crazies in this world one can’t be too careful. And don’t worry we won’t be using Euro anytime too soon. The rest of the world was watching while the Europeans were fighting over how to fix their problems per country not as a collective. Who would trust the euro if one or more of the countries were vying to help their own citizens before they thought of europe as a whole.
    The US has the luxury of using the power of the federal to force their selfish Senators into behaving for the good of the country as opposed to the selfish needs of each state. Hence the dollar will always be able to recover faster than the euro.
    Europe is following Obama’s lead not the other way around. And do you know of a european country that is taking Shiff’s advice. I can answer that. NONE! What does that say about his confidence in the euro? The guy is a snake oil salesman.
    I must address George, comment 18 today. I wish I knew where your ancestors came from. I would love to belittle you and yours as you think you have the right to do to others.
    Does it make you feel better calling people of other races negative names. You must feel very little of yourself because this makes you feel bigger and better than the trash that you really are, whatever race you are.
    No wonder you couldn’t ‘get in’ to the Blog, You couldn’t use a keyboard.
    I despise semi-Humans like you who think they are better than anyone else.
    Howie, how nice to have you back. I don’t know who is worse George or that crazy woman who likes to walk behind her man.
    I would love to walk behind you, but somehow like Zen Lill said earlier, I think you would enjoy the exercise more if you walked behind me.
