Cruelty is Cruelty
Posted by Michelle Moquin on February 13th, 2012
Good morning!
In 2008, I, along with others, fought really hard to pass Prop 2. California voters overwhelmingly passed it with the intention of outlawing egg factory cages. We were determined to make California be a cage-free state. I was so delighted that the hens would soon be able to freely spread their wings, instead of living in cruel cramped quarters. My thought is this for the hens and all animals: The least we can do is provide those who give us their lives or give us food to nourish ourselves, a healthy, comfortable, stress-free environment. Is that too much to ask? Evidently, yes.
Today the egg industry wants to prevent what we have fought so hard for. This is what I just received in the mail:
A bill was just introduced in Congress that would keep laying hens locked in egg factory cages so cramped that they could not even spread their wings. This is a dirrect assault upon California law. The egg factories opposing Prop 2, having lost at the ballot box, are now trying a different tactic. They have introduced a Rotten Egg Bill – also know as the Egg Products Inspection Act Amendments of 2012 ( H.R. 3798). Substituting one cruel metal cage for another, the industry’s openly stated intention is to:
- Nullify Proposition 2 and all other existing state laws that ban or restrict battery cages.
- Deny state legislatures the ability to ever enact laws to outlaw cages or otherwise regulate egg factory conditions.
- Deprive voters of the right and ability to ever pass ballot measures banning egg factory cages.
The outrageous measure is of course being sponsored by the same egg factory group that opposed California’s Prop 2 – The United Egg Producers (UEP). And using HSUS and other tagalongs for political cover, UEP claims that its legislation would eventually result in “progress” for laying hens. Yeah right. We can’t fall for their BS. The reality is this: The egg industry merely agreed to slowly - at the glacial pace of 18 years – continue the meager changes in battery cage conditions that are already occurring due to state laws and public pressure.
The reality is this for the hens: The Rotten Egg Bill (H.R. 3798) would keep hens forever suffering in their cramped metal cages, and basically we would be able to do nothing about it – our voting rights would be taken away! How crazy is that? Prop 2 was win for the hens… an important step.
We need to save Proposition 2. Tell Congress NOT to nullify California’s state laws and voting rights! – Stop the Rotten Egg Bill.
Readers: I realize that many people don’t think about much abut the eggs they buy when they shop. But I like so many other do. For me, I have a very difficult time when it comes to the livelihood and well-being of animals…even hens, as you see here, when they are abused. I have the ability to feel such compassion that it is literally painful for me.
And it doesn’t go away when the video ends. I imagine myself in a cage with no where to move and the horrible feelings of going crazy from the confinement. I know it’s crazy – can you imagine how the hens feel? I would not want to endure this, and I’m sure the hens, nor any other animal or being does either.
It does not matter whether they were born in a cage or not, their nature is to be free doing the things that come naturally…things that they cannot do while confined to a cage. The pain, suffering and abuse is unnecessary. But of course, as in many things, the greed to be as profitable as possible is the motivating factor, and the animals are the ones who suffer because of this.
I take pride that I can put myself in the shoes of others…even animals, yet at the same time, it can be very overwhelming and stressful because the abuse is so prevalent on our planet…in our faces daily in one way or another. Thankfully as I have gotten older, I do not let it get the best of me, and my passion to protect remains steady.
All I ask is that if you eat lots of eggs, look at what you are buying. Are you supporting the horrific factory farming? I know they are more expensive but can you eat less and buy from the smaller farms that support “cage-free” environments? I am not saying that “cage-free” factories are innocent, but it is a step in the right direction.
As always, I post these things hoping that one of them hits a nerve and becomes a passion for you as well. We can’t all take on all the suffering of those in this world. But we can find something, whatever it be…the environment, a child, an animal, or cause, that pulls on us to do more. I can only tell you how wonderful it feels when you know you are making a difference. Thanks.

I have been hearing a new word in the American vernacular lately and it bothers me and I find it a cruel place since Michelle‘s Post is about cruelty. The word is “Man Cave.”
This word implies that Men need a place to escape from their Women — A place where they can play with their toys such as pool tables, 100-inch flat screen TV’s, and violent video games in privacy. No disturbances from their Women or Children — A Cave makes me think of a dark cool place where a Man and his “Buddies” can get away and guzzle beer and hang out undisturbed.
It would be OK if there was such a thing as a “Woman Cave” where Women can get away from their Men and hang out with their Female friends and not be bothered to make snacks and sandwiches for their Men in their Man Caves.
What is happening to our society. I grew up with a “Family Room” in which I could hang out and watch TV, play games and share quality time with my siblings and friends.
It seems like we are building castles around us which keep out any intruders — including the people we are supposed to love and share life with.
I personally shared my friends with my Wife. Our friends had to be sociable to both of us or they were not our friends. We would go out to eat or have dinner at our place which I helped prepare with my Wife. We would associate with single friends or married ones — it did not matter. We had our own friends which we did things with, but we did not hide in a “Cave” to get away from each other. If we needed a little space from one another we went out with our personal friends and talked about it later when we returned, or not.
Mostly, we enjoyed doing things together — even shopping (some times). It seems like men nowadays want to be left alone to get drunk and watch sports on their 400-channel big screen HD TVs and scarf down buffalo wings and snacks while drinking lots of beer in their Man Caves — Probably made popular by all the electronic/computer/video game “Man Toys” on the market and lots of advertising.

Hi Mischa, well I would just go vegan if I thought it would help though people who are cruel to animals tend to be cruel across the board, I’ll sign the petition and hope for the best. I always buy my eggs at the farmers market, from a farm where they treat animals well, I can only take their word on that.
Howie, I agree, the man cave is another wall in the room, and the subliminal messages that women are getting all the time via music and tv is astounding in implanting thoughts on what’s acceptable behavior from our men (anything they want apparently should work for us, that and they want all our love, loyalty, allegiance, etc…hmm, ohhhkaayyy…and you mr man bring to the party what exactly?).
The man cave I thought via that book, men are from mars and women are from venus, was ‘symbolic’ in nature, but now in true American style, you’ve got the brick and mortar ‘man cave’. I looked at a house for sale recently that had a ‘media’ room, clearly it was a ‘men only’ media room, the couple selling…well, they’re doing well financially but they’re divorcing, too bad, he has to move now so no time for that man cave.
People go into disconnect mode at the first signs of ‘your not perfect’ and I think most people who are not in marriages anymore just aren’t that into giving too much any more. That’s just an observation not a commentary on myself though I’ve had my moments of feeling that way.
I attended a lecture on human sexuality last week, the speaker asked how many people were in a marriage, 4 out of 40, how many were in a one-on-one relationship, another 4 out of 40. that’s 32 people just going it alone, maybe having dates/sex activity here and there, or just engaging already committed people for a little side action bc hey don’t want the responsibility of a relationship, seems a lot of 20 something women see relationships with men as just work they don’t want to do, so they follow that path.
I understand, most US men are spoiled attention whores and require a lot of women (and they can be pouty in their demands and if you won’t participate, they find someone else to fill your shoes, no big loss there though and there’ll always be women who want a relationship that bad that they’ll go along for awhile…), to meet that bad behavior, women have also become similar and there’s either a lot of expectations on both parties parts or none at all. It’s kind of interesting and weird to watch/observe and participate in…
That’s it, that’s just a quick nutshell covering of a very complex issue and it is not being made any better by disappearing into caves.

This weekend, we saw Palin-palooza in Washington, D.C. when Sarah Palin spoke at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) and #Linsanity across the nation when Jeremy Lin, on the grandest basketball stage, scored 38 points against the Los Angeles nation and got the sports world in a buzz.
Though Palin showed this weekend that she could generate the enthusiasm the other presidential candidates could not and proved again that nobody captures the heart of Republicans more than she does, there was chatter among some in the GOP establishment — even those who saw the speech and the crowd reaction with their own eyes — that Palin did not do any better or any worse than the other candidates.
This is demonstrably false.
Such silly-talk would be the equivalent of sportswriters writing that Lin performed poorly last week in New York and the Knicks won despite his poor performance.
The difference between sports and politics is that nobody in sports can write such nonsense because everyone watches the same game. And if someone did write such nonsense, they would be resoundingly mocked and run out of the profession — that is in and of itself enough of a deterrent to keep sportswriters honest
Furthermore, sportswriters can hate or love teams or players but they still have to objectively write about what happened on the field of play. Again, because everyone is watching the same game.
But in politics, the chattering class and many of those who write about it have the gall to try to convince people that “x” happened when “y” occurred.
In a more interconnected world — made more possible by the proliferation of social media — this will be harder to do.
I wish politics had a deterrent or check similar to that in sports, in which writers and commentators would not dare to pen something that went against what everyone saw.
In any event, one thing was clear this weekend: PaLINation (yes, I did that) was out in full force, and anyone who tells you otherwise is not being honest.

Pinching Back On Salt Restrictions
It’s a mantra that we’ve heard for years—cut back on salt! But a new study dashes that advice, demonstrating that it’s not just too much salt that’s bad for our hearts but apparently also too little.
Not all of this surprised me, because many practitioners of natural medicine have long held the view that advice on salt intake should be individualized—and not simply be “less is best” for everyone. So I called the study’s lead author, Martin J. O’Donnell, MB, PhD, an associate clinical professor of medicine at McMaster University in Canada, to learn more about the research.
SHAKING UP CONVENTIONAL WISDOM
Dr. O’Donnell told me that his study—published in November 2011 in Journal of the American Medical Association—is the first large study to report potential heart health risks for both low and high salt intake in a single study.
Dr. O’Donnell and his colleagues examined data from nearly 29,000 men and women (all age 55 or over) from 40 countries who either had heart disease or were at increased risk for it because of prior history and co-morbidity factors such as diabetes.
They looked at how much sodium was excreted in their morning fasting urine (so it wasn’t self-reported salt intake) at the start of the study.
The participants were not aware that their salt consumption was being measured, nor were they asked to raise or lower their intake—they just ate the amount that they normally ate.
What the researchers found was that, over four years, those who consumed higher-than-average amounts of salt and those who consumed lower-than-average amounts of salt experienced more heart problems (including deaths) than those with an average intake.
WHAT’S “AVERAGE”?
It’s worth noting that the “average” salt consumption among participants in this study—estimated between 4,000 mg and 6,000 mg per day—is much higher than the recommended upper limits of 1,500 mg per day (the advice of the American Heart Association) or 2,300 mg per day (the recommended dietary guideline from the US Department of Agriculture).
And yet in this study it was the people who consumed this much salt who had the least number of heart problems.
The study showed that those with the highest and lowest amounts of sodium excretion had the highest risk.
For example, those who consumed more than 8,000 mg daily were at a 50%-to-70% higher risk of suffering a cardiovascular event over the four-year period, compared with the “average” salt group.
And, not quite as alarming but still of concern, among those whose daily salt intake was between 2,000 mg and 3,000 mg, the likelihood of dying from a cardiac event related to congestive heart failure rose by 20%, compared with the “average” salt group.
Now, it’s important to note that patients who ate the least amount of salt might have been doing so because they were at very high risk for disease and their doctors had insisted that they cut back severely on salt.
In other words, their risk uptick might not be due to their salt intake (or their salt intake alone), but also due to poor health. “We did some analysis to address this issue, but we can’t exclude this possibility—larger clinical trials will be the only way to truly answer this question,” said Dr. O’Donnell.
The mystery is—how could consuming a low amount of salt increase cardiovascular risk? There may be several potential reasons for this, Dr. O’Donnell said, but the most prominent hypothesis is that lower salt intake activates the body’s renin-angiotensin system, which results in narrowed blood vessels, which of course makes it harder for blood to flow to and from the heart.
WHAT’S THE SALT SOLUTION?
This study—and others that have recently shown that similarly negative health effects may be associated with a low-salt diet—caught the attention of the government.
Congress has already put on hold its plans to legislate lower sodium levels for school lunches, requesting more information from the US Department of Agriculture before putting it to vote. Dr. O’Donnell said that there is “an urgent need to establish a safe range for sodium intake.”
In terms of how much salt you should eat, talk to your doctor about your particular risk factors—and remember that the jury is still out.

Annnnybody that wants the GOP to run the country needs to seriously think about what they want.
They can’t even be fair and honest in running a primary. And this is what they are doing to each other.
Just imagine what they have in store for Pres Obama, a man that they are in unision to hate.
February 13th, 2012 at 2:46 pm
The republicans claim that the reason they are so angry with President Obama is because he is using government to tell people what to do.
They claim over and over that they believe that government should stay out of people’s lives.
YET,
They want government to regulate who can get married. They want government to approve only opposite gender marriages.
They are very okay with government regulating what a woman can do with her uterus.
And the republicans are all for government stepping in and regulating what the official language should be.
Yeah, right if it is something they want government to force the people to do. Hey, that’s all right.

When you’re a religion operating a business, then you must abide by rules that govern that business.
Congress can make laws governing businesses, e.g., if you’re a church you cannot take over a private hospital and then fire all the Jews, women and gays because the god you worship tells you that they’re ‘icky’. You must abide by labor law, environmental law, and criminal law.
Yet somehow when it comes to women’s health issues there’s always an exception that must be carved out. My sister had to lie in a hallway bleeding copiously after an emergency c-section because the hospital she was at refused to tie her tubes.
They took four hours to transfer her to another hospital in the next county because evidently her life was worthless to some bishop, and the doctors in that bishop’s employ could not exercise their duty and had to violate their oaths because some guy in a dress in Rome speaks for an unheard and unseen supernatural diety.
Someday we’ll evolve beyond the need to worship gods and goddesses and will have the good sense to realize that women can be trusted to determine the course of their own lives.
Until then, we have jackasses like Paul Ryan to serve as toadies to the religious hierarchy of his church and wag his finger at women and their concerns.
February 13th, 2012 at 2:54 pm
Well then I think it is time for Catholics to only operate Churches and not businesses and only hire those few catholics that don’t use birth control.
This is nothing but more nonsense being spewed by the Republicans. Where in the bible does it say you can’t use birth control???
This is just a spin from the anti abortist believe that life begins in the eggs. Stupidity I tell you talk about the government getting involved in people bedrooms.
Extremism run rampant in the Republican Party these days. The republicans sound more like the Taliban every day.
February 13th, 2012 at 2:55 pm
So the bottom line is not whether or not Catholic institutions are exempt from paying for contraception, it is keeping women employees Catholic or not, from getting and using contraception at all. Way to go MEN of the cloth
February 13th, 2012 at 3:03 pm
I don’t ever remember the Catholic church complaining about health insurance plans covering the cost of Viagra.
Viagra and that class of drugs is being paid for by practically every single plan.
I don’t see why the Catholic church should get to complain about contraception for women, when they clearly pay for men whether they are married or single to get viagra.
If the church is willing to sponsor a single man getting help to fornicate without the benefit of marriage, then why are we accepting their pious bullshit about helping women to sin?
If someone could link me to an article that shows the bishops criticizing the supplying of Viagra and such, I would really like to read it. It would certainly be refreshing.

Newt is a joke. A parody. Not really Newt singing
To think that I was concerned about the sanity some of our Australian politicians.
Once again the Yanks have gone more than one better. Gingrinch, Paul, Santorum, I really think Obama should be doing something about the state of the mental health system in the good old US.
It’s downright dangerous to have people like this roaming the streets.

How to Handle Suicidal Facebook Updates
“It’s hard to get out of bed in the morning.” If you were to read a Facebook status update from a friend that made that statement, how would you react?
With no context clues like tone of voice or body language to accompany those words, this posting could mean, I love my cozy warm comforter…or it could mean I’m so depressed that life is not worth living anymore.
Or what if your friend posted, “Another bad headache today—this really is the last straw”…or “I hate my job, but that won’t matter much longer”—how seriously should you read into it?
It’s a question that a growing number of people have to ask themselves as more and more people join social networks.
The good news is that Facebook and the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (a.k.a. Lifeline), a national network of crisis centers funded by the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), are providing a helping hand that’s free to Facebook users in the US and Canada.
To find out more about the service, I called Lidia Bernik, MHS, associate project director of Lifeline.
REPORTING SOMEONE ANONYMOUSLY
Combining the power of social networking with crisis support counseling, Facebook has made it possible for users to now anonymously report any comments posted by friends who might be suicidal.
Bernik told me that if you report a friend’s comment, after reviewing your submission, Facebook will send a private e-mail to your friend’s personal account (not a Facebook message), encouraging him or her to either call a counselor from a Lifeline crisis center (800-273-8255) or click on a link to begin an instant chat with one.
Both the hotline and the chat feature are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
To report your concern about a friend’s comment, you would take these steps…
On your newsfeed, to the right of a friend’s status update, click on the arrow.
Click on “report story or spam.”
Click on “file a report.”
Check the box that says “violence or harmful behavior” and then choose “suicidal content.”
Then a specially trained member of the Facebook safety team (a real person, not a robot) would review the message and decide whether or not the status update does, in fact, seem suicidal.
And don’t think your suspicions are so out of line—suicide is, in fact, the tenth-leading cause of death of all Americans, with more than 36,000 of us taking our lives each year.
But still, how do you know when to report a comment? How can you tell whether someone is simply joking…or just venting after a stressful week…or truly crying out for help?
Bernik, who worked with Facebook to develop the service, suggests asking yourself which one of the following categories best describes your friend’s posting…
A clear statement of intent or action. “I’m about to jump off a bridge”…“I just took out my gun and I’m going to use it”…“I just took an entire bottle of pills.”
Strong hints. “You won’t have to deal with me much longer”…“No one will miss me if I’m gone”…“If something happens to me, I just want you to know…”
With either type of comment, Bernik suggests reporting it on Facebook so that an offer of help will be sent to your friend.
She also suggests reaching out to your friend directly right away, either by phone, chat or e-mail, to encourage him or her to call the Lifeline and to let your friend know that he or she is not alone.
Bernik doesn’t suggest calling 911 unless you know exactly where your friend is and that he is in immediate danger.
It’s a tougher call when your friend’s statements are more vague…
Ongoing depressive thoughts. “I disappoint everyone”…“I’m worthless”…“Things will never get better”…“Nothing matters anymore.”
Many angry rants. “I hate just about everyone”…“Nobody appreciates me”…“If one more person asks me for something, I’m going to explode!”
If you see one of these types of comments, call the friend on the phone so you can get a sense of how serious these feelings are, suggests Bernik.
And don’t beat around the bush, she adds—go ahead and say that the posting has you worried about whether your friend might do something self-destructive.
If it sounds like your friend is potentially suicidal, then report these types of comments on Facebook and also tell him or her directly to contact Lifeline.
If the idea of “reporting” someone makes you uncomfortable, just keep Bernik’s words in mind: “This is not a case of ‘telling on’ someone.
It is a new way of reaching out. If someone takes offense, just keep in mind that it’s better to save a life than to worry about risking a friendship.”
