“Just Noticing”: Observations Of A Blogger
Posted by Michelle Moquin on April 1st, 2012
Good morning!
Over the years that I have been blogging, I have written about or posted articles about the happenings in several African countries: Congo, Sudan, Chad, Libya, Egypt, etc. When we think of these countries we don’t have to think too hard about the goings on, as they are still important topics in the news. But recently I read about a country bordering the southwest side of Chad – Cameroon.
“Just noticing…”
…China just can’t leave the wildlife alone. Their recent demand for ivory ornaments is devastating the Elephant population in Cameroon.
Elephants Being Massacred in Cameroon

Invading Sudanese horsemen have slaughtered half of the elephants in one of Cameroon’s reserves.
More than 200 elephants have been slaughtered by poachers in three months. Troops arrived too late to stop the massacre, and one soldier has been killed. In the last week, twenty more elephants were killed.
In the 1980s, there were an estimated 3,000 elephants in the Bouba N’Djida park. Now there are less than 400 remaining alive. 150 soldiers have confiscated 49 tusks, representing 25 dead elephants.
“The forces arrived too late to save most of the park’s elephants, and were too few to deter the poachers,” Natasha Kofoworola Quist, director of the World Wildlife Fund’s Central Africa program told AP.
In neighboring Chad in the 1970s, there were more than 400,000 elephants and now there are less than 8,000. The elephant population in the Central African Republic has been decimated. Even Kenya has seen an 80% decline in its elephant population over the last four decades.
The geopolitical problems in the Sudan and Chad makes it easy for the insurgents to cross into Cameroon and poach wildlife to finance their battles.
Wildlife activists blame China’s growing footprint in Africa for an unprecedented surge in poaching elephants for their tusks. Most are believed to be smuggled to China and Thailand to make ivory ornaments.
Growing demand for ivory in China is “the leading driver behind the illegal trade in ivory today,” said Tom Milliken, an elephant and rhino expert for the wildlife trade monitoring network TRAFFIC. China has a legal ivory market that is supposed to be highly controlled but tons and tons of illegal ivory has made its way there in recent years, said the Zimbabwe-based Milliken, who spoke in a conference call with several World Wildlife Fund officers.
The rains begin next month and hopefully that should at least slow down this systematic slaughter.
*******
Readers: Obviously the legal ivory market in China is not highly controlled or their wouldn’t be this issue of contraband ivory. My feeling is this: If you’re going to allow legal ivory to be sold knowing that you can make a good profit, as the ivory is in high demand, are you going to be that concerned when illegal ivory is also being sold, when you can make even more of a profit? Evidently not.
Quite frankly, I don’t care if there are some parts of this world where killing an elephant for its tusks is legal. I think it should be illegal everywhere. Killing an elephant for its ivory tusks and endangering this beautiful mammal is just not right.
What is it with the Chinese and their greedy need of adding another ivory trinket to their collection, at the expense of beautiful harmless mammals? It appears that when the Chinese reach a certain level of wealth, they, like many wealthy people in many other countries, want to be able to buy things that others can’t afford.
Almost a year ago Kenyan president Mwai Kibaki set fire to more than five tons of elephant ivory to bring attention to the problem of poaching.
About 335 ivory tusks and 41,000 trinkets worth about $16,290,000 ( £10 million) were burned. It had been confiscated by officials in Singapore in 2002 and found to be from Zambia and Malawai, says the Guardian.
Africa had about 1.3 million elephants in the 1970s but now has only about 500,000. Kenya currently has about 37,000, “up from the 16,000 it had at the height of the crisis in 1989 but far below the country’s peak.”
In 1989, Kenyan officials first set fire to huge store of ivory, as a wake-up call about the crisis of the declining elephant population. Elephants numbers have increased, but activists fear another crisis as the middle class in China grows and “seeks to satisfy its appetite for ivory,” just as the growing Chinese middle class’s taste for shark’s fin soup has led to rising demand for sharks, an endangered species. A global ban on ivory was implemented in 1989 and temporarily halted the elephants’ decline, but its numbers are again in danger due to the “booming demand” for ivory in Asia and more conflicts between humans and elephants as the former encroach on the animals’ land.
It seems the greed of the middle class Chinese doesn’t stop there. Coveting the precious ivory is only one destructive pleasure – Chinese can’t seem to get enough of shark fin soup either. What other harmless species will be the next victim of such greedy appetites?

Janaki: You don’t have time to read them all. Now you know how I feel everyday. :)
K: All good questions, and we al know the answers.
JB: Evidently not. You saw what happened in the 2010 elections. Let’s HOPE people remember that lazy day in November when the democrats decided to stay home, and the republicans took their place.
DC: I don’t know where you got your stats, because I have read several articles that don’t concur with your claim. Here’s one:
Deaths Nearly Triple Since “Stand Your Ground” Enacted
MIAMI (CBSMiami.com) – As some state lawmakers are calling for a re-thinking of Florida’s “Stand Your Ground” law, which allows people to defend themselves from danger without the need to first try to get away, an analysis of state data shows deaths due to self defense are up over 200 percent since the law took effect.
The shooting death of Trayvon Martin by an armed, self-appointed Central Florida crime watch volunteer who claimed he shot in self defense has sparked a national debate about Florida’s law, technically known as the Castle doctrine.
Until 2005, it was generally considered self defense if someone tried to get into your home or invade your property, so long as you could show deadly force was the last resort. In 2005, the “Stand your Ground” law removed the need to retreat before using force, even in public.
That’s the justification George Zimmerman used when he shot and killed Miami Gardens teen Treyvon Martin, who was returning to his father’s fiance’s house from a convenience store visit when Zimmerman spotted him and deemed him suspicious. Before the police he called arrived, he claims Martin attacked him and he shot in fear for his life.
Police accepted his story, and let him go, sparking national outrage. Zimmerman remains free.
That kind of thing is happening a lot, according to FDLE statistics obtained by CBS4′s David Sutta.
According to state crime stats, Florida averaged 12 “justifiable homicide” deaths a year from 2000-2004. After “Stand your Ground” was passed in 2005, the number of “justifiable” deaths has almost tripled to an average of 35 a year, an increase of 283% from 2005-2010.
“The Legislature needs to take a look at Stand Your Ground,” Florida Sen. Oscar Braynon, D-Miami Gardens told CBS4 news partner The Miami Herald, “This is a perfect case of where it goes awry. This could only be the beginning of more problems down the road. It has unintended consequences.”
“When the Legislature passed this in 2005, I don’t think they planned for people who would go out and become vigilantes or be like some weird Batman who would go out and kill little kids like Trayvon.”
Gov. Rick Scott, speaking with reporters following a Cabinet meeting, agreed, though without committing to supporting any particular legislation. “When you see any violence it’s always positive to … go back and look at existing law and see the impact and the consequences of it,” Scott said.
“If there’s something that we need to adjust I’m hopeful that the Legislature would be interested in taking that up.”

TG: You and me both. This recent passage of the Paul Ryan Budget in the House is not good and not something I want. The House voted 228-191 to pass the bill with 10 Republicans opposing it. Democrats unanimously opposed the measure.
I will quote Nancy Pelosi and urge my readers to follow suit with her wishes:
“For the sake of our seniors, for our families, for our children, for our workers—I urge my colleagues to vote ‘no’ on the Republican plan,” Pelosi said. House Democrats proposed their own budget, which the House shot down.
Ana: Thank you for the complimentary kind words.
Peace & Love, everyone.

Horrible, I can’t say the Chinese are any different that any other class of wealth though the sharks fin soup as status and ivory trinkets…I’m trying to think of the equivalent in US wealth, we seem to enjoy our large square footage homes, our MBZ’s and Jag’s and bling bling more than animal stuff or am I mistaken, I could be, I don’t collect anything of that nature.
ID, isn’t it interesting how what at once looks convenient and consumer user-friendly is exactly what is snagging away our personal privacy and rights? Don’t go giving away your books in favor of a kindle just yet, please…

…also, Kelly from Mar 29, thank you, and thanks for noticing my ‘growth’ – it is assumed that we all evolve and grow, and some of us do so progressively, and some of us do it it leaps and bounds, would have to say that like everything for me, I did both and the last 4 years are unlike any other 4 years stretch of time for me, in terms of being myself and in terms of growth. I do put everything under my ‘sociological’ and ‘psychological’ microscope and I hope it’s helpful though I know it doesn’t always uphold values cited here, I am a humanist and I watch and balance and scale everything bc my worldview calls for subjective and objective views, I am in total agreement that there are large groups of bad men running more than should be, I’m also aware that racism, sexism, and other -ism’s are alive and well out there and don’t like that much either, until the whole thing reaches a tipping point and changes radically, which I sense is coming rapidly – election 2012 and all the countries above going through serious changes, it’s a precipice alright…I’m waiting to see if all the white women will do what’s right for this country, hoping so…
RobertRt, thanks for the maturity nod, though yep, my immaturity can rear it’s head occasionally, what can I say, my inner 17 yr old is quite active in my committee decisions, though I have made the major shift of sending my whole committee (myself at different ages) onto their respective meditation pillows where they sit in lotus position and silently meditate while I, that’d be me now, think things through…they’re allowed small amounts of air time now and their point had better be good.

How to Love Unloved Veggies
Brussels sprouts, cauliflower and asparagus are the three vegetables I get the most complaints about. Here’s an easy recipe for each to learn to love them…
ROASTED BRUSSELS SPROUTS
Brussels sprouts are incredible when roasted—they become crisp outside and tender inside, with a mild, somewhat nutty flavor.
I have converted countless brussels sprouts naysayers with this simple dish. If you want to spice it up a bit, sprinkle a teaspoon of smoked paprika on the oiled sprouts before cooking.
1 pound brussels sprouts, halved
1 Tablespoon olive oil
¼ teaspoon salt
Preheat the oven to 375°F. Place the brussels sprouts on a baking sheet, and toss them with the oil and salt.
Roast until golden brown and crisp on the outside (but still soft and tender inside), which should take about one hour. Serves four.
Recipe from So Easy: Luscious, Healthy Recipes for Every Meal of the Week (Wiley).
SKILLET MAC & CHEESE & CAULIFLOWER
Combining cauliflower and cheese sauce is a great way to convince cauliflower haters to change their tune—the flavors work wonderfully together.
2 cups 1-inch-wide cauliflower florets
1 ¼ cups whole-wheat bread crumbs
3 Tablespoons Parmesan cheese
2 Tablespoons olive oil
3 cups cold low-fat (1%) milk
3 Tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 ¼ cups shredded extra-sharp cheddar cheese (5 ounces)
¼ cup shredded Gruyère (1 ounce)
2 teaspoons mustard powder
¾ teaspoon paprika
½ teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper
6 ounces (1 ½ cups) whole-grain elbow macaroni, cooked for three minutes less than the package directs (about three cups cooked)
Nonstick cooking spray
Preheat the oven to 375°F. Steam the cauliflower over boiling water in a covered steamer basket until just tender, about five minutes, then finely chop.
In a small bowl, combine bread crumbs, Parmesan and oil. In a large saucepan, whisk together the milk and flour until the flour is dissolved.
Bring the mixture to a gentle boil over medium heat while whisking constantly. Then reduce the heat to medium-low, and simmer until the mixture thickens slightly, two to three minutes.
in the cheddar, Gruyère, mustard powder, paprika, salt, black pepper and cayenne pepper. Whisk until the cheeses are melted and the mixture is smooth, about one to two minutes.
Add the macaroni and cauliflower, and stir.
Spray an ovenproof, high-sided 10-inch skillet with cooking spray.
Pour the mixture into this skillet, then sprinkle with the bread crumb mixture. Place the skillet on a baking sheet, and bake until the cheese is bubbly, about 35 to 40 minutes. Serves six.
Recipe from Comfort Food Fix: Feel-Good Favorites Made Healthy (Wiley).
ASPARAGUS WITH MIMOSA TOPPING
The topping makes the asparagus extra delicious.
2 slices whole-wheat bread, crusts removed
Cooking spray
1 hard-boiled egg
3 Tablespoons chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley
¼ cup freshly grated Parmesan
¼ teaspoon salt
Pinch of freshly ground black pepper
2 bunches asparagus (about 2 ½ pounds), woody bottoms removed
1 Tablespoon water
Pulse the bread in a food processor until it becomes fine crumbs. Coat a medium nonstick skillet with cooking spray, and heat the pan over medium-high heat. Lower the heat to medium, add the crumbs and toast, tossing often, until golden brown, five to six minutes. Remove from heat and cool.
Peel, then grate the egg, using the medium holes of a box grater or a medium rasp grater. Combine the egg, bread crumbs, parsley, Parmesan, salt, and pepper in a medium bowl.
Place the asparagus in a large microwave-safe bowl with the water. Cover tightly, and microwave on high for three minutes. Drain well.
Put the asparagus on a platter, and sprinkle on the topping. Serves eight. Recipe from The Food You Crave (Taunton).

Another Murder by Police. They kill Black Men at an alarming rate.
Dear MoveOn member,
On November 19, 2011, my father, 68-year-old Kenneth Chamberlain Sr., was shot and killed in his home in White Plains, New York.
My father was a 20-year veteran of the Westchester County Department of Corrections and proudly served the United States of America as a Marine. He stood about 5 feet, 9 inches tall, and he suffered from a heart condition.
The events that led to his killing began around 5 a.m., when his medical alert device was accidentally set off, sending a call to the City of White Plains Department of Public Safety. Everything that happened after that was recorded by an audio device installed in my father’s home as part of his medical alert system.
When the police arrived at my father’s home, he and the staff for his medical alert service told them that there was no medical emergency and asked them to leave. And yet they insisted that my father let them into his home, banging loudly on my father’s door for over an hour. On the recording, the police can be heard calling my father a “nigger.”
Ultimately they broke through his apartment door and first shot him with a Taser. He was wearing nothing but boxer shorts when the police began their assault against him. Shortly after that, he was shot with two 40-caliber rounds and killed.
My family is asking the Westchester County District Attorney to bring a criminal indictment, and we call on the United States Department of Justice or the New York State Attorney General to prosecute this as a hate crime.
The petition says:
This petition is regarding the upcoming grand jury hearing in the case of Kenneth Chamberlain Sr., an unarmed elderly black citizen who was shot to death by the White Plains Police Department.
This case not only brings into question the policies and practices of this department; but it is an open question whether it was inevitable, particularly in light of the audio tapes and video tapes witnessed by Mr. Chamberlain’s family members and attorneys where racial slurs and expletives were used before ultimately shooting him twice in the chest and killing him.
It is imperative that those tapes be made available to the grand jury, and that all other evidence be presented as well. I am concerned that secrecy so far—for example, the names of officers involved have not been released—bodes badly for transparency in this case as it moves forward. Nor am I aware of any public statements about the case from elected officials calling for openness.
Members of Mr. Chamberlain’s family and community—and a much wider circle of people who need to know there is fairness in the criminal justice system—seek reassurance that, no matter what the verdict, the process has been open, honest, and just.
We, the undersigned, implore Westchester County District Attorney Janet DiFiore to no longer allow police misconduct, brutality, or criminality to happen in this community and ask that these officers be indicted and charged with murder and civil rights violations.
Thanks!
–Kenneth Chamberlain Jr.

I read this in the HP about the Zimmerman issue: “The news coverage of Martin’s case has been criticized by conservative pundits, including Ann Coulter and Laura Ingraham who attacked the media for unjustly trying Zimmerman in the court of public opinion and rushing to judgement.”
==========================
As usual the bigots are attempting to define the issues making themselves the victim. Here the issue IS about TRYING Zimmerman. If he was arrested as any black man would have been under the same circumstances we would have an opportunity to TRY him.
So the point is really he HASN’T been TRIED at all not justly or unjustly. He is free after killing a child. That much is an indisputable fact.

Robert, RT I”m writing this on my cell. You touched a nerve. I read that article it was about Fox anchor. What a JOKE! Fox News does this EVERY DAY to Obama! Total Hypocrites!
April 2nd, 2012 at 5:14 am
Robert, Rt you are so right if not for the black community out cry and the subsequent media involvement, the Fla DA and Police Cammand NEVER would have done any investigation at all..
This would have been just another murdered black child.
April 2nd, 2012 at 5:15 am
Michelle did you see the recent article about the sons of Romney killing elephants?
April 2nd, 2012 at 5:35 am
The thing about Zimmerman not being arrested in a circumstance that would cause the arrest of a black person that has turned it into such a big story is that it is something different to everyone.
To some it is about racial profiling. To some it is police sweeping it under the rug. To some it is about the Stand Your Ground law. To some it is about concealed carry. And the list goes on. Some see it merely as a crime.
Those on the right who hold different views don’t have just one view either. Take what Scarborough said just the other day. He claimed it was NOT about Stand Your Ground. Many say the opposite.
What first made this a national case was that the police were not adequately investigating and were openly defending Zimmerman.
The injustice of that drew everyone in. However, it is far more complex than the fact that the police would lie to protect a possible murderer.
Part of the continued attention is countering the kneejerk claims of people who defended Zimmerman. For example, the faIse photos of Martin became an entire subset of stories.
The police station video became a big story because it countered all of the claims of Zimmerman being severeIy beaten.
Another aspect of the continued coverage is due to the genuine puzzlement that Zimmerman still remains uncharged in a situation where most people would have been charged.
The slow trickling of information is another aspect that keeps this going. It took weeks to get the 911 calls and even longer to get the police station video.
Any information coming from the Sanford police department is suspect and difficult to get, such as police reports, which trickle out after they have touched them up.
Much of the information that has become public knowledge was due to independent investigation. The police failed or rather refused to investigate. They did not want to find out anything that cause them to have to charge Zimmerman.
Hence, most of the information that has come forward was done my independent sources and therefore put out as soon as it was available. All of this plays into the 24 hour news cycle.
So, what we have is an emotional case that means something different to everyone, and a situation (brought on mostly by the police) where information is discovered in a way that perpetuates the story.
April 2nd, 2012 at 5:38 am
“Innocent until PROVEN guilty” is a fundamental American right. The evidence and accounts of at least one eyewitness led the police to release Zimmerman.
If it turns out that he was not exercising his legal right to self defence, then by all means, prosecute him. But wait for all the facts and truth to come out before you race to judgement.
April 2nd, 2012 at 5:41 am
The sad commentary is,that there are people who prey on others, and are given a pass because of one lame reason ,or another. Self defense is a right like any other right.
And if a criminal “preys” on a person,it’s his problem if a “victim” is armed. For the people who would have another rely on the police with a 911 call,is asking for the victim to “dial a prayer”
April 2nd, 2012 at 5:42 am
archie bunker, a famous republican, said, that when riding on a plane…the stewardess should just pass out guns to all passengers at the beginning of the flight…and collect them at the end. that was in the 1970s…i think republicans of today would think that that is a good idea.
April 2nd, 2012 at 5:43 am
MB, “Innocent until proven guilty” is the presumption DURING a trial. George Zimmerman has not been arrested or charged.
Right now there is no pending investigation against him, just a rexamination of his statements and the actions of the police department.
Now the media has raised certain issues regarding this incident and supporters of Mr. Zimmerman are advocating his cause in the press I believe to plant the seed of “reasonable doubt” in a potential jury pool.
Now if you notice, the conservatives are floating memes in the media in order to defend their position and to slow down the constant drip of information that is eroding the credibility of Mr.Zimmerman’s orignal story.
One can question whether Trayvon Martin’s race was a major factor in this incident; the reason why Mr.Zimmerman followed him and why the police and district attorney were so cavalier in the investigation in the death of Trayvon Martin. That inquiry is legitimate.
I will quote a famous conservative regarding this case: “Extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice, moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue”-Barry Goldwater.

It is rumored that a champion fighting in secret for Obama in Africa and the Middle East has convinced the President to fund the forces resisting Assad in Syria.
This in my humble opinion is long over due. But it seems it took the arrival of this bigger than life soldier of fortune to the battlefields of Syria to bring about a serious coalition of US, Arab, and Western allies to make it happen.
You know him as Anonz, the bad guys call him names that would make a pirate blush.

I have a question regarding these type of US “pledges” which many Presidential administrations have made. What is the source of the money?
Is there an unallocated pot of money the exec branch can use? Or, does the pledge really mean Administration is pledging to go to Congress and actually get the $?

Mike fuck Anonz. He is just another serial killer practicing his trade where he can get a medal for it.
I witnessed his brand of fighting in Libya. He gunned down more than 30 men with a grease gun. Then he turned to the women and asked if they were satisfied that their tormentors were dead.
The women let out with one of those shrill yells that is particular to women in the Middle East when they are supportive of something. It was horrifying hearing one sex cheering the murder of another.
Anonz is an opportunist taking advantage of some mistreatments of women by a few men to kill muslim men with impunity.
China will be his waterloo. And non too soon for me.

It’s actually China supporting the opposition with funds funneled through the US Treasury.
So if they kill him, the US taxpayer will have paid for it.

We need to take care of our own people Syria has nothing to contribute to our needs and wants.
April 2nd, 2012 at 6:58 am
I wish the US and the world could do more to help the brave Syrian people being butchered by their dictator for demanding freedom and human rights.
We should always support those who rise up and are willing to sacrifice everything for freedom.
If we don’t stand for human rights, what the heck do we stand for?

Need another reason to hate Goldman Sachs?
============================
NEW YORK, April 1 (Reuters) – A private equity fund run by Goldman Sachs Group Inc, under fire over its business ethics, has agreed to sell back its stake in a media company that critics say facilitates sex trafficking.
GS Capital Partners III on Friday signed a deal to sell its 16 percent stake in Village Voice Media, which owns the website Backpage.com, back to management, a Goldman spokeswoman said Sunday.
The divestiture is the latest development in a growing controversy over online adult advertising that has pitted celebrities, law enforcement officials, members of Congress and a New York Times columnist against Village Voice Media, a private media company that has the largest share of revenue in the United States from online advertising of adult services.

People, understand this:Zimmerman IS a sociopath.Violence is like sociopaths’ drug-their high. When feelings of inadequacy build for a sociopath, they need to gain control by way of violence.
Then, they are calm again for a little while. Soon, they hunt again. When sociopaths get away with crimes, they only feel more enboldened and will seek that high again!
Now, when he gets that itch again, beating another woman or the lone White kid walking on the street will suffice to meet his needs.
Only Zimmerman knows the true number of violent crimes he committed. Joran Van der Sloot was another sociopath. There are women aquaintences still missing of Joran’s.
