When we poison our babies…

…we’re destroying our future.

Good morning.

Why is this Organic Food Stuffed With Toxic Solvents?

By Dr. Mercola

Last December, the U.S. National Organic Standards Board, an expert panel that advise the USDA Secretary on organic matters, narrowly approved Martek Biosciences Corporation’s petition to allow the use of their genetically modified soil fungus and algae as nutritional supplements in organic food.

The product is an omega-3/omega-6 oil (DHA/ARA) synthesized from fermented algae and soil fungus.

The oil is extracted from this biomass using hexane, a neurotoxic byproduct of gasoline refinement that is specifically banned in organics.

The Cornucopia Institute investigated Martek’s patent and safety filings at the FDA, and discovered that the product also contains synthetic chemicals, stabilizers, carriers, and some of the ingredients are also genetically modified.

(As it turns out, some of their products were developed by Monsanto before Martek bought the technical rights.)

Martek’s formulated oils are added to “organic” milk, infant formula, and a number of different foods. After a formal legal complaint, the USDA announced in 2010 that it had “inappropriately” allowed Martek oils to be included in organic foods.

But enforcement of their removal was delayed for 18 months in an apparent effort to permit corporate lobbyists to petition for review and legal inclusion in organic food. According to the Conucopia Institute:

“Although Martek told the board that they would discontinue the use of the controversial neurotoxic solvent n-hexane for DHA/ARA processing, they did not disclose what other synthetic solvents would be substituted. Federal organic standards prohibit the use of all synthetic/petrochemical solvents”.

How Did Unapproved Ingredients Make it into Baby Food?

It is distressing to see that chemical additives have skirted USDA approval and made their way into infant formulas—some of which even bear the USDA Organic Seal! This confirms that even organic certification is NOT watertight, and you, the consumer, will need to stay on your toes.

Martek’s DHA and ARA products are synthetic attempts at omega-3 fats that have been in the U.S. marketplace since 2002, and in organic products since 2006. They are chemically extracted from certain types of algae and fungi that have never before been part of the human diet, and have never been approved by the USDA. Yet they have made their way into your baby’s bottle.

In fact, it is unlikely that the production process of these agents has been examined at all—and for good reason. The Cornucopia Institute has uncovered an entire list of questions regarding the source, processing, and other ingredients used in the manufacturing of Martek’s DHA and ARA, any one of which could result in a ban from their use in certified organic products.

GMOs, Lies, and Petrochemicals

For starters, Martek’s synthetic oils are extracted using a toxic petrochemical solvent called hexane—a process that’s just about as NON-organic as you can get. Hexane extraction is widely used in the production of oils, such as fatty acids and vegetable oils, but is banned in organic produce because it’s a non-organic material.

So what’s their loophole?

Martek Biosciences was able to dodge the ban on hexane-extraction by claiming USDA does not consider omega-3 and omega-6 fats to be “agricultural ingredients.” Therefore, they argue, the ban against hexane extraction does not apply. The USDA helped them out by classifying those oils as “necessary vitamins and minerals,” which are exempt from the hexane ban. But hexane-extraction is just the tip of the iceberg. Other questionable manufacturing practices and misleading statements by Martek includei:

  • Undisclosed synthetic ingredients, prohibited for use in organics (including the sugar alcohol mannitol, modified starch, glucose syrup solids, and “other” undisclosed ingredients)
  • Microencapsulation of the powder and nanotechnology, which are prohibited under organic laws
  • Use of volatile synthetic solvents, besides hexane (such as isopropyl alcohol)
  • Recombinant DNA techniques and other forms of genetic modification of organisms; mutagenesis; use of GMO corn as a fermentation medium
  • Heavily processed ingredients that are far from “natural”

Your Body Knows These “Nutrients” are Fake

Although DHA and ARA from real foods are indeed important nutrients, the synthetic versions are not even remotely the same. They are foreign to your body, and to your infant’s body, which is why many babies are having terrible adverse reactions. Naturally derived omega-3 fats have important benefits to your baby’s eyes and brain. Martek has manipulated this fact into a clever marketing ploy that convinces mothers that this artificial concoction is as good for their babies as breast milk.

But there is no scientific evidence to substantiate Martek’s health claims. Martek claims that their formula is “proven in independent clinical studies to enhance mental development.” According to the Cornucopia Institute, this claim is based on one single study involving just 19 infants. Martek neglects to mention the numerous other clinical studies that fail to show any advantage in brain development.

The Perfect Formula for Diarrhea, Vomiting and Gastrointestinal Pain

The Cornucopia Institute has compiled a summaryii of hundreds of adverse reports submitted to the FDA about possible intolerance to DHA/ARA-supplemented infant formula. Of those reports, 98 are said to be “confidently linked” to intolerance to the DHA/ARA oils. Many hundreds more are highly suspect. The reported gastrointestinal symptoms include:

  • Severe gas
  • Diarrhea and vomiting
  • Gastric reflux
  • Constipation and bowel obstruction
  • Agitation, fussiness, crying, and severe distress

The adverse reaction reports filed with the FDA represent only the tip of the iceberg, as most parents are unaware that Martek’s additives may be the cause of their infants’ problems. Some parents and their babies have endured these symptoms for weeks or months before identifying the cause, believing it was simply colic or unexplained fussiness.

A few companies have made a conscious decision to not use Martek’s additives in their baby food products, in order to protect the organic integrity of their foods. Cornucopia has published a list of “USDA Organic” products containing Martek’s additivesiii. Shockingly, ALL organic infant formulas with the exception of ONE (Baby’s Only Organic) contain Martek’s DHA! Some baby foods also contain it, so it’s a good idea to get in the habit of reading ALL of your labels.

Beware of Other Known Contaminants in Infant Formula

Your child is perhaps never more vulnerable than in the first few months of life, when his or her fragile body is still rapidly developing. Pound for pound, infants experience greater exposure to chemicals than adults, and have immature and porous blood-brain barriers, which allow greater chemical exposures to reach their developing brains.

It is best to avoid infant formulas whenever possible. Breastfeeding is best. Infant formulas have been found to be contaminated with a variety of problematic chemicals, including:

  • Perchlorates (a component of rocket fuel)
  • Melamine
  • Advanced glycoprotein end products (AGEs)

Please avoid feeding your baby soy based formula due to dangerously high concentrations of manganese and estrogenic compounds, among other problems. Most infant formulas also contain far too much sugar. The most recent contaminant found in infant formula (as well as food and commercial juices) is arsenic. This is particularly worrisome for babies because they are especially vulnerable to arsenic’s toxic effects.

Is there Arsenic in Your Baby Formula?

Researchers at Dartmouth College warned that there is an “urgent need” for regulatory limits on arsenic in food products after levels in two infant formulas were found to be up to six times the U.S. federal limit for drinking water. ivThere are currently NO regulations for arsenic levels in foods or juices.

The arsenic in infant formulas is thought to come from the brown rice syrup used to sweeten some formulas. Rice is a plant that is very efficient at taking up arsenic from the soil, regardless of whether or not it’s grown organically.

You Can Avoid All of These Problems by Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding offers a list of life-long health benefits for both mom and baby, making it the best food you can give to your baby by far.

Many are aware that breast milk contains antibodies, or immune molecules, that are transferred to the baby, giving her immunities to illnesses that the mother is immune to. The converse is also true — if your newborn is exposed to a germ, she will transfer it back to the mother while nursing. The mother’s body will then make antibodies to that particular germ and transfer them back to the baby at the next feeding.

So it’s not just a matter of vitamins, minerals, proteins and fats that makes breast milk far superior to formula. In fact, breast milk also contains substances that may significantly enhance your baby’s gut and support the healthy development of her entire nervous system.

If you are unable to breastfeed, you may want to consider the option of purchasing human breast milk, which is becoming a hot commodity online. Nursing women are now earning up to $1,200 a month from selling their extra milk to other families, many of whom are pairing up online via Craigslist and other classified sites. This trend harkens back to ancient times when wet nurses (women who breastfeed babies other than their own) were used for a variety of purposes. For more about this option and some cautions, please refer to this article on the sale of breast milk.

Is the U.S. Becoming a “Dumping Ground” for Substandard Products?

Food in the European Union (EU) seems to be getting saferv, while American food may be becoming more dangerous. The EU has been progressively tightening their standards, while the U.S. has been loosening theirs. Consider herbicides, for example.

Glyphosate is the most widely used herbicide in the U.S. and is the primary ingredient in Monsanto’s broad-spectrum herbicide Roundup, which is causing incredible damage to our environment. As a result of Monsanto’s lobbying, a U.S. regulation passed in 2011 increased the tolerance for residues of the herbicide glyphosate on corn. The tolerance is even higher than the one allowed by international standards. The Codex Alimentarius Commissionvi has established a maximum residue level for glyphosate on corn at 5 parts per million, but the U.S. regulation now allows 13 parts per million.vii

The EU herbicide/pesticide legislation is probably the strictest in the world, a testament to their commitment to consumer protection. Besides limiting these chemicals, they ban genetically engineered foods and the hormone rBGH, whereas the U.S. continues to allow them. Many more such examples can be found.

As the European Union and other nations have begun to tighten their environmental standards, manufacturers have begun to use America as a dumping ground for consumer goods that fail to meet other nations’ standards for toxic chemical content. Manufacturers ship wood, toys, electronics, pesticides and cosmetics to the U.S. containing substances that are banned or restricted elsewhere, because they raise the risk of cancer or cause reproductive or neurological damage.

Think about all of the dangerous and poor quality products we’re importing from China that make the news now on a regular basis. Unlike the European Union, which uses a “precautionary principle” that prescribes protective steps whenever there is scientific evidence of risks to public health or the environment, the U.S. EPA relies on voluntary steps from the industries themselves. This model of consumer protection has unfortunately been swallowed up by corporate corruption. If the government is unable to provide the oversight needed to ensure public safety, then it’s up to YOU, the consumer, to protect yourself.

What You Can Do

The Cornucopia Institute has posted an Action Alert in the form of a proxy letter you can sign and mail off today. They will hand-carry your letters to the USDA spring meeting to protect organic products from synthetic additives. You can print out this proxy letter here.

Signed proxy letters should be mailed to:

The Cornucopia Institute
PO Box 126
Cornucopia, Wisconsin 54827

Also consider including a donation check with your letter, to support the invaluable work the Cornucopia Institute performs to protect your and your family’s right to clean, wholesome, truly organic food. As of right now, there does not appear to be any additional benefit to contacting your congressman, but if the need arises, Cornucopia will notify all their members and subscribers with the information.

I can’t encourage you enough to participate in this process. It’s important to recognize that you CAN make a difference! Always remember that collectively, we have the most effective power in the marketplace that can exceed the power of these multibillion dollar, multinational corporations. We can vote with our pocket books. But we also need to make our voices heard; we have to let these agencies know that we are watching, we’re paying attention, and we’re not going to allow this immoral, if not downright illegal, industrial favoritism to continue.

Until American consumers are willing to vote LOUDLY and CLEARLY with their checkbooks by refusing to purchase cheap products created under poor standards of safety, we will continue to be suckers for substandard and even dangerous products that can compromise our health, along with the health of future generations.

So think carefully before you purchase your products! The real cost of “cheap products” comes in the price you pay for your long-term health.

How Your Name Can Hurt You

Think about your full name for a moment. Say it out loud. Is it hard to pronounce—especially for other people?

If it is, you might want to consider either giving yourself a nickname or making sure that everyone knows exactly how to pronounce your first and last name—especially in the workplace or any other place where you want to “get ahead.”

According to new studies from New York University in New York City and University of Melbourne in Australia, which were published this past November in Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, how easy your name is to say can make a big difference in your work life—even determining whether or not you get promoted!

EASIER TO SAY, EASIER TO PROMOTE
In one of the studies, when 35 Australian adults, ages 18 to 52, were asked to rate how much they liked easy-to-pronounce (or so-called fluent) surnames, such as Stevenson and Dunlop, and difficult-to-pronounce (disfluent) surnames, such as Leszczynska, Nafpliotis and MacEochagan, researchers found that the more disfluent the names were, the less favorably the participants felt about the surname—and the person attached to it.

And when the researchers looked at promotion practices within 10 different US law firms, they found that employees with fluent last names had been 7% to 8% more likely to be promoted to partner within 15 years of graduating from law school.

    HOW WE PROCESS NAMES
Are we really so shallow? Actually, no, we’re not, said Adam Alter, PhD, assistant professor of marketing at NYU and one of the study’s lead researchers.

It has more to do with the way our brains work, he said. “When we can process a piece of information more simply, when it’s easier to comprehend, we like it more because we don’t have to work so hard.

If we are anxious about pronouncing a name and getting it right, then we may favor the person with a more fluent name because it’s less mentally taxing and less likely to provoke social awkwardness,” said Dr. Alter. “There’s no fear of embarrassing ourselves or insulting anyone.”

You might suspect that a little bit of anti-foreign bias is at the root of this or that the length of the name is the real problem, Alter said. “Those factors can make a difference, but even when we controlled for the origin of the name and the length of the name, ease of pronunciation still influenced people.”

Look at President Barack Obama: His name sounded different to American ears at first, but it is essentially a very easy name to pronounce, so it did not hold him back.

Also, once a name that is initially disfluent (such as, say, that of former presidential candidate Michael Dukakis) becomes well-known enough that our brains can more easily process it, the negative stigma is decreased.

    GIVE YOURSELF A LEG UP
So how might this knowledge help us? Well, there are two things to keep in mind, said Dr. Alter—how you’re perceiving the names of others and how others are perceiving your name. Here’s what he suggests…

    1. Step up your awareness. Even when not ethnically charged, names can be an unconscious source of a subtle bias. If you are in a position to hire, promote or manage, ask yourself whether you would be making the same choices if Ms. Tverdokhleb were named Ms. Todd.
    2. Reduce your colleagues’ anxiety. Some of the research looked only at last names, but in their other studies, the researchers found that the same theory holds true for first names.

So if you have a disfluent first or last name and you like it, you certainly shouldn’t feel the need change it legally—after all, your name is your identity and it often provides meaningful hints about who you are culturally or spiritually.

But what you can do is create a nickname for your résumé that can be used in the workplace. Your family and friends can refer to you by your real name, but ask your colleagues and bosses to call you an alternative name that’s easy to pronounce.

For example, if your first name is Demosthenes, you might encourage people to call you Demos. Or if your full name is Katherine Leszczynska, ask to be called simply Katherine L. If you are offended by the idea of using a nickname, cheerfully (and slowly) tell people the correct pronunciation until they get it.

“It’s a difficult, sensitive issue,” said Dr. Alter, “but the ultimate goal is to make people comfortable around you to make sure that you are given your best shot at success.”

    Hafa adai;

It’s in the wind that the government has put Guam’s government officials and employees that may come into information concerning contact with any aliens as a result of their work with the US military on notice that any leak will be death with severely.

Bill 447 is an attempt to put the fear of God and jail time into those or any other of Guam’s government officials or employees who would leak any information to the press.

The latest bit of info leak that is supposed to have angered the military is the leak that a Princess searched for or shadowed by or ????????? by aliens lives on the island of Guam.

Of course this could be a diversion to keep us from watching too closely the affairs being conducted in and around the Marianna Trench.

Do any of you remember the article by Howie on Nichola Tesla. It’s time we revisited it.

How many americans have heard of Nichola Tesla, the greatest genius who lived 50 to 60 years ago??

He came up with the inventions way ahead of his time, such as clean energy and wireless electric power..yes, wireless power free to all. He took the idea to JP Morgan, the evil chairman of Chase Bank, who was financing Tesla .

He was thrown out of the office and Morgan comment was..’the only electric power available to all will be with a counter’..
and here we are 60 years later with Morgan and the bankers and the $200 trillions oil industry on charge..

What will take to make Tesla free wireless electric energy available to all?? don’t expect any help from the goverment or BP !!

  5. Ellen Says:

I read this in HP this morning:Moving swiftly, the Secret Service forced out three agents Wednesday in a prostitution scandal that has embarrassed President Barack Obama. A senior congressman welcomed the move to hold people responsible for the tawdry episode but warned “it’s not over.”

The agency announced three agents are leaving the service even as separate U.S. government investigations were under way.

The Secret Service did not identify the agents being forced out of the government or eight more it said remain on administrative leave. In a statement, it said one supervisor was allowed to retire and another will be fired for cause. A third employee, who was not a supervisor, has resigned.
    ===============
It looks like they are cleaning house. But if what Anonz and Michelle said is true. The attacks on Obama will not stop here.

    Ellen

  6. Dennis Says:

That may be your take Ellen. But I see it as an indication of Obama sleaze. For as far as I can remember SS agents were considered to be of high moral character and beyond reproach.

It was considered and honor to serve the country in the manner. That was the perception until this President. What corrupted them?

  7. Alycedale Says:

As usual racists like you come forward with two types of lies. The obviously racist one. And the big white lie we hear so often.

You, know the one about how it was always so much better in the past. That bullshit we know is a LIE for the proven fact that anything run exclusively by white boys has been and is either crooked, racist, bigoted, biased, misogynistic, unimaginative, ineffective and or just plain bad for whomever it is or was designed to benefit.

Hence, the Secret Service was always the way it is today only worse because they didn’t have the press of the rest of the world to worry about and the white boy press was certainly not going to spill the beans. That’s why politicians could do any despicable thing to women OTWs or children and never have to worry about it making the white boy press.

That hardly means it didn’t happen. So that bullshit about how much better it was in the past is just that white boy bullshit.

    I saw this:
    1) Supervisors email racist remarks, 2008
    2) President Obama’s schedule is found in a gutter in Asia, 2011
    3) Now this

    Such disregard and disrespect.

But what can you expect for penis envy white boys attempting to embarrass the black President.

    Alycedale

  8. GG Says:

I’m glad to hear that after slamming all that vodka that drugs weren’t involved. That would have made this a bad situation. They should all just be forgiven. I’m sure they weren’t specifically told not to party or act like dogs in heat before the president got there.

Firing these poor misunderstood hard working people is pretty harsh given the current unemployment situation. I mean come on now, one little mistake and your career just gets flushed down the toilet. Where is the justice!?

That’s as bad as getting in trouble for lying to congress under oath. Everyone knows that’s only allowed if you’re a member of congress or otherwise a high ranking government official…..

  9. JE Says:

Great. Romney, the paragon of family-friendly virtue, refers to a man degrading a woman and paying her for sex as “play time.” One more example of the contempt in which Romney holds women, and why he is not fit to govern.

  10. NA Says:

the image of the late Peter Sellers comes to mind.. this administration reminds me of his movies..

  11. Barbara Says:

I agree with you Alycedale. My husband is always telling us how well “they” ran the country when it was white men only.

The truth is they were as horrible as the Nazis. Only they got away with what they did to the OTWs. Like putting those poor black boys in a syphilis program to benefit white men who got it.

How does not getting caught for deliberately giving a disease like that to people and following their pain and suffering for decades without telling them what they were suffering from make the times better then?

We whites in America have no conscious aches for what our ancestors have done to the OTW because we control what history will say about our past conduct.

Personally, I’m tired of my male relatives telling me how much better it was when they ran things. I’m voting for the black man come November. This is not one of those dumb white women so often referred to on this blog.

    Barbara

As long as we live in the same Capitalist society that would peddle flesh to build its empire after exterminating many of its Original inhabitants and who has the mindset that might equals right, how does one make the logical and reasonable shift to a social conscious movement that extols the virtue of brotherly love and respect for each others right to life?

  16. Zen Lill Says:

Mischa, good article, more new moms should be made to read labels, some are so trusting that they assume that a manufacturer wouldn’t harm their little ones, not true, companies want to turn profits not make you or your baby healthy, if YOU want that, then you can breast feed as long as possible or make your own baby food, it’s really not hard, and you’ll know what your child is getting.

Alycedale, yep…this shit has been going on with every pres, why’d they get caught this time, bc they didn’t use caution and they didn’t care about embarrassing this one. Seemed like it was purposefully set up to me, or that SS man who wouldn’t pay the $40 extra fee for having someone in his room was just a high caliber moron. Apparently, there was an argument about this charge and all the other SS men did themselves in by backing this dude, all of them could use a firing. If you want a prostitute, then do what it takes to do that covertly, and you know they’ve done manuevers like this with white pressies they just didn’t allow themselves to lose cover, this time possibly they were moles of GOP or were bought and paid for to make obvious errors of judgement.

Ma Qin, Uwella, Reba, Caroline +_4 cuzs, (hope I didn’t forget anyone else) – thank you.

…and Helen, no thank you, I like sweet grapes : ) AND men who say what they mean and mean what they say. (think: Anonz). Now if he slipped and said something hurtful or stupid (though he’d never go off the edge like that man Glen did, and why not – bc he has mastery over himself and his emotions/thoughts and speech, he doesn’t go off half cocked and require scoldings to man up) and therefore, an apology would be accepted. Learn the difference.

  17. Zen Lill Says:

oh, I should’ve added – ‘the benefit of the doubt would be extended and an apology would be accepted’

In Glen’s case I’ll say I accept the apology although the same thing drifts through my mind regularly when men like him want to apologize for shitty remarks, that thought is ‘yeah, it’s cool, at least now I know who I’m dealing with’ bc you see the original choice of words are left in the atmosphere and the psychic exchange of his true feelings came through and is not immediately negated by an ‘I’m sorry.’

  20. Human Events Says:

John Hayward has a great story this morning on the latest Obama green energy fiasco. This time, it’s the high-end, green car manufacturer Fisker Automotive. A portion from John’s story:

“Fisker got $529 million of your money from the Obama Administration, producing 500 manufacturing jobs. Unfortunately, those manufacturing jobs were in Finland, not America. Fisker’s executives were quite proud of their wise decision to keep those jobs overseas.”

As John notes, Obama apologists wailed that there is an American plant in Delaware, but can you guess how many people that plant employs now? Read John’s story to find out.

Audrey Hudson has been all over the Keystone pipeline saga. Yesterday, the House passed the highway funding bill, which included language to approve the Keystone. No doubt that pesky Senate will certainly put the kibosh on that bill for the sake of scoring political points with the radical environmentalists.

And finally, our legal affairs correspondent Ann Coulter’s weekly column looks at the advent of gun control laws and how they were originally promulgated by Democrats to keep guns out of the hands of blacks. This allowed, as Coulter says, the Democratic policy of slavery to proceed with fewer bumps…

    Have a great Thursday.

How we treat the people we are allowed to mistreat says more about this country’s people than all the rhetoric of the patriotic and the pious, and the sermons of the religious.

  22. Leon Says:

The next time you think “this type of conspiracy couldn’t exist.” Consider this:

Whites can keep anything secret because that race is full of racist narcissistic sociopathic ignorance. It is easy to get them to keep a secret.

One only has to appeal to one or more of those traits and they and you will be able to easily get the person to carry a secret to his grave.

That does not apply to secrets that have monetary value. Government secrets between nations can be bought.

Ergo most top level secrets held by America were in the hands of the Russians for years. Tens of thousands of spies on all levels were murdered because of the white boys penchant for greed over patriotism.

  23. Vivian Says:

So now the republicans want to gut college assistance. They don’t want to invest in people who want to learn a skill to get a good job or to continue the country’s technological leadership.

    Who are these idiots?

Thank you Michelle for getting up every day a making this place. I am a 83 year old black woman. My 53 year old daughter bought me a computer and taught me how to use it so I could read your blog myself.

Her 23 year old daughter told her about your wonderful topics. I get up each day wanting to read what is here next. I like your helping all peoples find common cause to let each person find a piece of dignity and a equal share of there country’s dreams.

When I was a mother trying to feed her children in Nashville, I had to do whatever I could to keep them with food and clothes.

White men abused be and my kind any time and any way they wanted. I was a Patrol Mother and we were at the mercy of merciless white men.

Police, lawyers, judges, just any white man who took the time to abuse us could because we needed the jobs and we could not testify against a white man in a court of law.

I feared for my children when they marched for the little dignity and the better piece of the American dream of equal treatment I see today.

I cried when Obama became President. I’m ill now so I don’t expect to see him get reelected. I pray to God every night before I go to bed and as soon as I wake that President Obama makes it out alive.

God knows so many black men before him paid with their lives so he could get the chance to be President. I see the hatred that it happened every day here in the faces, words and actions of whites here in Tennessee.

If I see God when I pass, my only question will be Why?

Why Lord did you have to test us so by putting human animals in charge of us? Mostly I have seen only death, and suffering caused by the whites I have come in contact with during my 83 years in the State of Tennessee.

I have spent most of my life feeling like I live in a cage which if I leave the animals out side will attack or kill me and mine.

Here I can say what I can not anywhere else. Thank you for making me like a Rosa Parks, even if I had to do it behind your place.

Want a Second Dog? How to Make Sure the Two Pooches Get Along

If one dog is good, two must be better. To some dog lovers that seems like it should be true, but the reality is, bringing a second dog into a home can create problems. What to do…

    YOUR CURRENT DOG
Two questions to answer about your current dog before adding a second dog—does my dog generally play well with other dogs?…does my dog react well when another dog enters the house?

If the answer to either question is no, think twice about bringing a second dog into your home. If your heart is set on a second dog, you may need to hire a professional trainer.

    YOUR SECOND DOG
It’s best to select a second dog that will be no more than 35 pounds heavier or lighter than your current dog when both are fully grown. If the size differential is greater, the larger dog might chase down and harm the smaller dog—even if the dogs generally get along well.

Seeing a small animal dash by can trigger a larger dog’s natural hunting instinct, a phenomenon called “predatory drift.”

Age differences between the dogs is not necessarily a problem, although some older dogs are unhappy about sharing a home with an energetic younger dog that always wants to play.

It also can be a mistake to bring two puppies into the home at the same time.

When dogs grow up together, they often bond very closely with each other, to the exclusion of close relationships with the humans.

    BRINGING THE DOGS TOGETHER
The dogs’ first meeting should be outdoors in a fenced-in area that is not your own yard, and you should have help from another person.

If the meeting is on your property, your first dog might aggressively defend its territory against the newcomer.

Exercise both dogs separately prior to this meeting to burn off energy.

Position one dog (it doesn’t matter which one) on its leash at one side of this fenced-in area while the second dog enters from the other side, also on a leash.

Slowly walk the dogs toward each other. If both dogs appear happy, continue walking until you are about six feet apart, then drop both leashes (but don’t take the leashes off—you might need to grab them if a fight develops).

Call off the meeting immediately if either dog becomes aggressive (growling or snarling)…very tense (rigid body, fixed stare)…or very fearful (such as hiding behind your legs).

If the initial meeting fails, take the dogs on a long walk, where they walk the same route at the same time but with their leashes held by different handlers.

The handlers should be in the middle and the dogs on the outside. Repeat the introduction described above immediately after the walk.

If the dogs still don’t get along, you might need to hire a dog trainer.

If the dogs get along, let them interact until their excitement dies down, then take them home. Keep them on leashes inside for a few minutes until you’re sure that the change of venue has not upset either dog.

For the first month, separate the dogs in different rooms or crates when you’re not home.

Also take precautions to avoid fights at feeding time—a common conflict in two-dog homes. Place the dogs’ bowls in separate rooms or on opposite sides of the room while you remain in the middle.
